pril offers the Houston area some of the most refreshing weather of the year—cool mornings and sunny afternoons, followed by brisk evenings. As we witness the greening of the trees, shrubs and turf, it reminds us to reflect on the undeniable beauty of nature. April 22, 2013 marks the 43rd anniversary of Earth Day. Learn about Earth Day and find a multitude of resources at www.earthday.org. Our garden expert, Mercer Arboretum’s Darrin Duling, spotlights the distinctive springtime splendor and year-round delights of Redbuds. Discover their unique blooming habit and fabulous foliage in Darrin’s monthly column, “The Hort Whisperer.” April has us relishing the weather and the joys of spending time outdoors, but for some Houstonians, outdoor living is a way of life virtually year round. In our April home feature, Heights couple Holly and Josh requested a home with a large screened-in porch for their new home, a two-story Modern Bungalow. Holly and Josh had the privilege of taking this design journey with their friends and neighbors, Mike McIntyre and Bob Robinowitz of McIntyre+

Robinowitz Architects. The firm also oversaw the construction of the new home for a family of five. Speaking of Modern design, April brings Houstonians the ultimate opportunity to learn about or enhance their appreciation for Mid Century Modern design. We are excited to feature an informative article by Brian Hoffner, director of Houston Modern Market Week, which benefits Houston Mod. We’ve also included the full schedule of events happening April 5-22. With Mid Century design getting more and more well-deserved attention, it’s easy to see the sublime simplicity of the Mid Century Modern aesthetic. And the current permutations of the style are a testament to how ideas hatched some 50 years ago work beautifully today.

HOME & GARDEN TOURS The East Montrose Home Tour and Art Walk takes place on April 13 from 10 to 4. Situated in the shadow of downtown Houston, and bordered by Montrose Boulevard, West Gray, Genesee, and Fairview, East Montrose was platted in the early 1900s. Many original homes and cottages, some dating to the 1890s, and modern glass and steel residences built in the last decade, combine in the eclectic mix of traditional and contemporary style, which is the hallmark of East Montrose. A diverse mix of old and new homes are showcased on the tour, with tastings from five area restaurants. Information: eastmontrose.org.
The East Montrose Home Tour and Art Walk on April 13 features seven homes and seven art spaces, plus gourmet bites.
Admission is $12 in advance or $15 at the door. Proceeds benefit the ASID Foundation, which supports interior design research, education and scholarships. Information: www.asidtgcc.org. The Houston Pond Society and the Lone Star Koi Club present the 2013 Water Garden and Pond Tour, May 4-5, with 20 locations across the Houston area. Enjoy beautiful settings and fascinating fish, as well as conversing with club members about their backyards. Advanced tickets can be purchased at Nelson Water Gardens, starting April 13, or at any of the ponds on the tour. Information: www.lonestarkoi.com.

They loved the layout of the room but not the colors—too much white and brass for their liking. “I felt overwhelmed by our first meeting.” Denise said. “You had such vision not only for the bath but the entire house and our visit encompassed so much more than just choosing paint colors—thank goodness!” she laughed. The hardest suggestion for her to visualize was painting the vanities a darker brown from the Benjamin Moore “White” Interior Room gloss enamel that they had always been. I explained that one of the things she hated about her bath was all the white surfaces and the vanities would look more like freestanding cabinets if they were painted. To save money, the couple opted to leave the chrome/brass two-tone faucets rather than replace them with brushed nickel faucets. She admits she was uneasy until she saw the finished product. “I spend a lot of time in this room getting ready, and now it is a warm

Whitebuds are a most elegant spring flowering tree.
“Rising Sun” redbud has golden leaves that emerge pinkish-orange. “Merlot” features dramatic, near-black leaves.
Y O U R G U I D E T O H O R T I C U LT U R E I N H O U S T O N Dear Plantophiles,
Flowering trees reign supreme in many spring planting schemes and none are better suited for our Gulf Coast gardens than redbuds. This group of approximately 10 species, in the genus Cercis, occurs throughout warm temperate regions in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and North America. They are large shrubs and small trees ranging from 1025’ tall, and make perfect border plants or accent trees for tucking into small spaces. They decorate our early spring landscape for nearly a month with tiny flowers produced in masses along bare branches before their leaves emerge. All save for one rare Chinese species, Cercis racemosa (flowers in hanging clusters—if you find one, please do let me know), exhibit cauliflory; popping their flowers directly from stems, branches and even trunks. Redbud flowers are not actually red but a rich orchid (as per my childhood box of Crayolas). Cultivated varieties vary from a darker, red-violet shade, to clear pink. White-flowered forms are also available—called “whitebuds”, and they are exquisite in bloom—makes the ubiquitous Bradford pear look like a hippo in a hula skirt.
BY DARRIN DULING
Plant breeders have worked extensively to go beyond attraction based on flowers: the handsome, heart-shaped foliage appears in a variety of colors: gold and apricot; “Rising Sun”, burgundy; “Forest Pansy” & “Merlot”, and white variegation; “Ace of Hearts”. There are also spectacular weeping varieties; “Lavender Twist” & “Ruby Falls”. These and other cultivars tend to fly off of nursery pads as soon as they are set out! Redbuds grow well in full sun to light shade, and tend to be rather tough and forgiving of anything but soggy soil. We are fortunate to have three species (some botanists classify them only as varieties) native to Texas: Cercis canadensis, from our eastern region, C. texensis from the western limestone ridges and C. mexicana from extreme southwestern Texas. The European native redbud, Cercis siliquastrum, is commonly known as “Judas Tree”; legend has it that this is the tree that Judas Isquariot used to hang himself. Please don’t let this name deter you, as redbuds are completely reliable and will never betray you, beautifying your garden for many years. Keep on growing!

He holds a Master of Science Degree in Plant Taxonomy from the University of Reading in England, as well as the Royal Horticultural Society Certificate of Training and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew Diploma of Horticulture. Modern Legacy Preserving Houston’s Mid Century Modern Homes By Brian Hoffner • Photography by Brian Hoffner and Ben Hill If you explore old neighborhoods around Houston, you will come across pockets of post-war, modernist homes built in the mid-20th century. Many of these little gems have been lovingly cared for by owners who understand and appreciate their architecture. However, many of them have seen decades of deterioration or insensitive remodeling. There is a trend, encouraged by local non-profit group Houston Mod, to buy these Mid Century homes and restore them. Brought back to the way the original architects intended them to be enjoyed by the American family. Those architects understood that good architecture and design make living more meaningful and enjoyable. Houston has one home by the architect most Americans

can name, Frank Lloyd Wright. He believed the mission of architecture is to help people understand how to make life more beautiful and the world a better one for living in. Wright said, “Whenever architecture was great it was modern, and whenever architecture was modern human value was preserved.” Houston has a rich history of notable and important Mid Century Modern architects that we can be proud of: Howard Barnstone, Preston Bolton, Bruce Goff, Hugo Neuhaus, Harwood Taylor, Lars Bang, Karl Kamrath, Philip Johnson, William Floyd, and William Jenkins, to name a few. The modernist work that these architects have left us is a legacy to the city of Houston. These

homes are treasured as part of our heritage and many Houstonians appreciate their potential. They are acquiring them at great prices, understanding that they provide a good investment, a particular desired aesthetic, and quality way of living. “People are flocking to these Mid Century homes and there are great deals to be had,” says Robert Searcy, a realtor who specializes in Mid Century homes. The key is to avoid insensitive remodeling, as it will kill the golden goose. If they restore them responsibly, respecting the architecture, they will find themselves living in art space that will always grow in value. This affects the neighborhood systemically as others follow suit and the area enjoys architectural revitalization that becomes an asset to the entire city.” Mid Century finds will typically require effort and budget to return them to the minimally modern aesthetics that was the intent of their original design. Many of them need to have faux facades, bad flooring and moldings removed in order to return them to the beautiful, clean and minimalist lines that lay beneath.

Interested Houstonians can learn much about Mid Century Modern architecture at this year’s Houston Modern Market Week. There are architectural lectures, two of them by Houston’s very own architectural historian Stephen Fox. Mr. Fox is a very important asset to the city of Houston and the author of many books including the Houston Architectural Guide which is in its third printing and will be available during Modern Market Week, signed by Stephen Fox, who says “Houston has a rich and exceptionally varied array of Mid Century residential architecture. There is not only something for everyone—Usonian, Miesian, Regionalist, Contemporary, even Googie—but the houses are amazing in their tectonic rigor and spatial amplitude.” The festival this year, includes five films of post-war modern architecture that made Palm Springs, California, the mecca of modernism that it is today. Three of the five films will include a talk with author and historian Alan Hess. To top off the week, guided modern architecture tours will be included, but seats are very limited for the popular tours. The interior design of these homes is as important as the look of the interior. Houston Modern Market Week is also a gathering of the best antique dealers and modernist designers to help you make the right selections for your home.
ing in a Mid Century Modern. You can sense this just by visiting one of them. It awakens an appreciation to architecture and design that has been set aside by decades of cookie cutter design where quality is measured by square footage. Frank Lloyd Wright also said “quality and quantity are not on speaking terms, never can be.” Thankfully, we are beginning to see a return to energy conservation, living in a way that is increasingly green, and more intelligently scaled to family. The smaller Mid Century home is the logical and affordable choice for many families throughout the United States. The communities are typically closer to town and offer a shorter commute to work and to cultural centers. Yet, Houston Mod, a 501c non-profit whose mission is to preserve our modern architecture, says that our heritage of architecture is at a critical juncture. Beautiful and important architecture is falling victim to the bulldozers of development at irreparable cost of heritage and history. Post-war architecture is now a halfcentury old. At this critical age it can be recognized and preserved as a national heritage or just as easily perceived as an old house sitting on a desirable lot and bulldozed down and replaced by a stucco clad condominium project. Organizations like Houston Mod and events like Houston Modern Market Week are bringing education and recognition of good design, art and architecture. As Houston moves forward in the 21st century we must preserve our rich architectural heritage lest we lose our integral identity.

Modern Bungalow A new home suits a young family in the Historic Heights BY SANDRA COOK • PHOTOGRAPHY BY BEN HILL
Holly and Josh, a young Heights couple, had had many conversations about home design with their neighbor, Bob Robinowitz, who co-owns the architecture firm McIntyre+Robinowitz with partner Mike McIntyre. When Holly and Josh found an appealing lot in the Heights, they immediately consulted their friends at McIntyre+Robinowitz, to design the ideal home for their family.

With the architects onboard, the next step was to find a builder. Holly began having discussions with her father, an engineer, about the design of the home and the faith that she had in the architects. Her dad was intrigued and had lots of questions for the architects, so Bob Robinowitz and Mike McIntyre invited Holly’s dad to come in for a meeting to discuss various mechanical aspects of the project. When he proposed the idea of McIntyre+Robinowitz serving as the builder, all parties unanimously agreed. Mike McIntyre had recently built his own house and the firm had been looking for an opportunity to take on the general contractor role. McIntyre points out a key decision on the construction was to go with a completely sealed home, which includes spray foam insulation throughout. “At 3,600 square feet, the two-story house needs just a 4.5-ton air conditioning unit,” says McIntyre. “We also built the home up off the ground at a similar height as a typical Heights pier-and-beam house, but it sits on a slab with 18-inch pony wall with built-in access to wiring and plumbing for access as needed.” Holly’s background in art and printmaking fueled her collaboration with the architects, whom she already knew quite well. Right away, Holly insisted on having a big screen porch, lots of natural light and open spaces for family togetherness, especially in the kitchen, dining, living areas. She asked that the bedrooms not dominate the home’s square footage. “I didn’t want big bedrooms where everyone went off to be all the time,” she says. “I wanted big family spaces, where we could all spend lots of our time.” Josh, a school administrator and counselor, was quite confident and supportive of Holly’s design instincts, especially after witnessing the design conversations with their architect friends Bob and Mike on
“They don’t just see outdoors through the windows, but they can be outdoors on the screen porch daily.” —Bob Robinowitz
The large screened porch was situated to capture the cooling southeast breeze and features a gas grill and fireplace as focal points. Holly, Josh and their boys utilize the porch daily throughout the year and regularly dine al fresco for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The hanging sculpture is by Houston artist Lee Littlefield. The fireplace is by Isokern and surrounded by Featherlite concrete block.

several occasions. Josh simply asked for a double showerhead in the master bath and his own man cave. “First on the wishlist was the screen porch,” says Holly. “In our old house we had this one back room where we were all the time. I just wanted a nice big space for the family to spend time and feel connected.” “Holly told us she didn’t want the house to be a big box at the front of the lot,” says Bob Robinowitz. “The lot is located in a historic district, so it was a given that we needed to adhere to historic guidelines. Essentially, Holly described the idea of the house as a Modern Bungalow—they wanted something compatible with the neighborhood, but also pushing toward a more modern vocabulary.” Holly’s visual sense clicked immediately with McIntyre and Robinowitz, and the trio maintained a good groove throughout the design process. They found it easy to exchange ideas. Bob Robinowitz describes the design process as “highly collaborative.” From time to time the group would meet to show Josh the progress on the plans. Each time he looked at the plans, he confirmed that all of the couples’ priorities were still included. And each time Josh reports he said, “looks good to me.” “He honored the fact that I loved the art and design part of it,” says Holly. “He had complete trust in us.” “He was very supportive every time we consulted him,” says Robinowitz about Josh.

“We looked at what she didn’t want: a two-story box with detached garage and maybe a rear porch and L-shaded yard in back,” says Robinowitz. “Then we looked
Turquoise is one of Holly’s favorite colors, so she chose a soft aqua blue for the kitchen cabinets and a bolder version for the barstools from Bend Seating. Bob Robinowitz designed the island to mimic an old Hermann Miller piece with painted drawers on front and natural wood on side. Grey Ceasarstone tops the counters, while the floors are 150-year-old oak reclaimed from old barns. The light fixture over the dinging table was created by the homeowner and her father.

at houses with a more slender presence on the street and instead of a rear yard, we postioned the yard more on the side and the front. This makes for a great spatial plan and is a little more of a pubic experience with the neighborhood.” Robinowitz also notes that the longer, east-west axis orientation of the lot is ideal for passive solar design, which allows for sun control and minimizing afternoon heat gain. The orientation on the lot also allows for making the most of the prevailing breeze from the southeast. With the screen porch designed as an integral room, rather than an afterthought, the home offers a dual indoor-outdoor living experience. “They don’t just see outdoors through the windows, but they can be outdoors on the screen porch daily. “We use the porch everyday,” says Holly. “The kids usually go out to the porch right after breakfast.” The generous porch, equipped with a fireplace, grill, ample seating and play space serves many purposes for the family. GROWING FAMILY
Holly and Josh had one child at the beginning of the planning phase, but after the plans were underway, they learned that their adoption went through for their second child and around the same time they were pregnant with their third child. So they started the process with one child but moved into the new home with three boys. “We always knew we wanted at least three kids,” says Josh. “But it happened pretty quickly.” “At that point, the biggest driver of our construction schedule was Holly’s baby,” says Mike McIntyre. “So we organized choices early to stay ahead of Holly and the baby. We gave her a list of things that that had to be selected before she neared her due date—and she did a great job. She was able to make quick and wonderful decisions.” Holly appreciated Mike’s recent experience with building his own home, and explains that hepled her step back and think about which decisions would matter in five years. This kept her from getting bogged down in the details and LEFT: Robinowitz envisioned and installed the semiopen ceiling in the powder room to allow natural light from above yet provide the necessary privacy. The sink/vanity was a collaborative effort between Holly, her father and the architects. RIGHT: The wall colors in the master bedroom are Sherwin Williams “Rainwater” and “Urbane Bronze.” Holly found the antique sofa at a Heights antiques store and had it recovered in her favorite hue.

to see what was really worth the time to ponder and what could be handled quickly. “When aesthetic things came up, Holly would say let’s go for what looks good, because behavior can adapt,” says Robinowitz. “She would always be supportive of the route that led to good design, and we appreciated that.” “We’d ask her opinion and if she had a strong opinion she gave it to us, and if not, she’d say ‘I’ll let you guys decide,’” added McIntyre. And from time to time, Josh would say “looks good to me.” THOUGHTFUL DESIGN
“The aesthetic of our work is about refinement of thought, so there’s a tightness to what we do that elevates the quality and I think people sense that when they walk in,” says Robinowitz. “Yes, they do,” Holly agrees. “We are very conscious of what’s appropriate for Houston,” says McIntyre. “Sometimes you see houses going up that don’t seem like they should be in this climate. You wonder if they even thought about things like rainfall, drainage and sun exposure.” The front of Holly and Josh’s house is a bit more traditional, but the back of house evolves into a more modern feel. “The higher windows towards the back introduce modern vocabulary into the architecture,” says Robinowitz. Holly says they wanted something a different from the majority of new construction in the Heights. “I really appreciate the combined aesthetic and how it really reflects us, not solely the architects. “

Provide design that best suits the clients’ needs by creating a space that is well-developed in style, quality, color, texture, personality, and function. How do your clients' tastes or personalities influence design projects? Each client brings their own flavor to the design process: styles or colors they are drawn to, needs they have for each space to make it the most successful for them What's the first thing you ask a client when starting a project? What is the most important thing you wish to accomplish? What initially drew you to interior design? My father owned successful furniture stores here in Houston and was also president of the Furniture Association, so I grew up in the industry, sharing my father’s passion for quality design. How can a potential client know if a particular designer is a good fit for their project? A client will know they’ve found the right designer for them when they feel truly “heard”. A good designer listens to what the client wants and applies her talent, knowledge & experience toward making a space tailor-made for the client.

What's the first thing you ask a client when starting a project? Please tell me what I need to know to best help you with your project. What initially drew you to interior design? To guide the client as they move through the process of change, taking the client and expanding their understanding of space, dimension and function in ways that they hadn’t considered before. 2. How do your clients' tastes or personalities influence design projects? Each project should highlight the individual’s needs, wants and desires as we aesthetically and functionally increase the usability and sensitivity of the space. 3. What's the first thing you ask a client when starting a project? My favorite thing is to ask the client what they don’t like or want to embrace during this process of change. 4. What initially drew you to interior design? Color—its potential, impact and ability to transform both a space and a person’s point of view. 5. How can a potential client know if a particular designer is a good fit for their project? I think that it’s like a shoe—if it fits, so does the foot. There is a comfort and an ease in the exchange, process, and relationship as it unfolds. If it doesn’t work, you will know very quickly.

How can a potential client know if a particular designer is a good fit for their project? The most important factor is that the client feel comfortable with the initial conversations. A photographic portfolio review is good too, but I for instance, do very targeted styling to each individual client, so photography alone will not demonstrate the originality of the client’s project, nor the camaraderie required of a true partnership between client and designer.

713.385.5585 • www.csdinteriors.com What is your design philosophy? Every client is unique, and every project should reflect that. Follow the basic design principles of scale, balance, proportion and color harmony and the end result will be rewarding. How do your clients' tastes or personalities influence design projects? I listen carefully to what they like or don't like, how they want the room to function. I'm there to pull it all together to look the best it can. It’s not about what I like. What's the first thing you ask a client when starting a project? Depending on the room/rooms and budget, I give my clients binders of photos collected from magazines and ask them to bookmark colors, fabrics, furniture, lighting, etc. of what they like. What initially drew you to interior design? As a young girl I loved rearranging my bedroom. I sold computers in my twenties and traveled the world in my thirties with an airline. It wasn't until my forties that I pursued a degree in Interior Design and formed my company. How can a potential client know if a particular designer is a good fit for their project? Usually clients are referrals from other satisfied clients. However, a client will be working closely with their designer, so it's important to like his or her personality. You will know if the designer is a “good fit” after the first meeting.
Carol Scott, ASID Student Member International Student chamber of Commerce 2900 S. Gessner Rd. • Houston, TX 77063 832.439.3482 • www.carolstudiointeriors.com What is your design philosophy? I love creating a room that reflects the style, beauty and uniqueness that’s been on the client’s dream list. How do your clients' tastes or personalities influence design projects? I like clients who don’t mind stepping outside the box. When a client has the ability to mix different trends, colors and textures to create a room that reflects their exact personality and taste. What's the first thing you ask a client when starting a project? What are the day to day functions of the room? Will any existing furnishings be reused? Do they have a design concept in mind? What is the budget? What initially drew you to interior design? I updated my own bland apartment and the property management liked it so well, they upgraded the other units with my ideas. That’s when I began to consider a career in design. How can a potential client know if a particular designer is a good fit for their project? I feel that a client and the designer should have a comfortable relationship. The client will feel this from the first meeting. If the designer’s work impresses the client, everything else falls in place. 55

What is your design philosophy? Most people have a strong concept of what they want at the beginning of a project. I maintain project focus so that their vision is realized.
What is your design philosophy? Our goal has always been to help the client “own” their home or office. We want the interior to reflect their personality, lifestyle, taste and preferences, not ours.
How do your clients' tastes or personalities influence design projects? I am happiest when I can contribute to the project, and make their concept better than even they considered possible. The collaborative process is my specialty. I like to see the joy on someone's face when I bring them the perfect solution they couldn't articulate.
How do your clients’ tastes or personalities influence design projects? Our motto “It's all about the client”. We always begin by listening to the clients wants, needs and desires. How they live or work is the foundation of the design.
What's the first thing you ask a client when starting a project? What experiences have they had with other professionals and was that a good experience? If they haven't worked with a designer or an architect, or a builder, then I can set the standard of what they can expect. What initially drew you to interior design? A friend who saw all I had done for her over the years, and encouraged me to seek this career path. How can a potential client know if a particular designer is a good fit for their project? Ask questions! Can they relate comfortably at the first or second meeting? Do they agree with each other about concepts and style? Talk to their other clients? Do you agree with their process, their level of expertise for your project, and understand their fees? Do you have a gut feeling that makes you hesitate?
What's the first thing you ask a client when starting a project? What do you want to do, what do you want to envison for this project? What initially drew you to interior design? I always had the eye and natural gift for design. As a child my Aunts asked me questions like, “What color should I upholster those chairs?” and “Where should I place that piece of furniture”. I guess you might say it’s in my blood. How can a potential client know if a particular designer is a good fit for their project? Do you mesh with that person? I find many times the initial consultation will be the ‘tell’ for both client and designer as to whether they will work well together.
Keron Weathered, Out of the Box Design, LLC 713-269-5475 • www.KeronOutOfTheBox.com keronoutofthebox@comcast.net
What is your design philosophy? My philosophy is successfully completing a design project that will thrill my clients. I know I can find beautiful and interesting pieces, but I make sure I understand the style and colors the client envisions. How do your clients' tastes or personalities influence design projects? I listen and brainstorm with clients, often by looking through photos from magazines for styles, colors and pieces they like. I also find out what does not interest them. Some clients want to be more hands-on and others just let me work on the project myself. What's the first thing you ask a client when starting a project? I like to know the timeline and particular budget for the project. I work with all budgets and if the client has a vision beyond what they can afford, I work in phases. Honesty and communication are key. What initially drew you to interior design? I was an art major but got married before I finished college. During all the previous jobs, I was always doing creative things for the owners. Finally, I decided to go to interior design school and become an interior designer.
56
How can a potential client know if a particular designer is a good fit for their project? View photos of the designer's work and read comments from previous clients. Interview the designer to learn how they work and to discuss budgets and deadlines. You need to feel comfortable that your project will be as important to her as it is to you. house& home | A p r i l 2 0 1 3 | h o u s e a n d h o m e o n l i n e . com

Bath Makeovers
Photo courtesy of Ann Sacks Tile & Stone.
SIMPLE PROJECTS CAN MAKE A HUGE IMPROVEMENT No matter how large or small your bathroom is, there’s probably room for improvement. All-out bathroom renovations can be costly. Consumer Reports recently found that a mid-range remodel averages $16,552. But improving the look and function of your bath doesn’t always require a full-scale renovation. Smaller projects can yield a dramatic update for a reasonable price. IMPROVING YOUR REFLECTION

and cost-effective solution. Once a professional measures your mirror, a frame is then custommade to fit the space, which is later professionally installed over your existing mirror. SEE THE LIGHT
Proper lighting that provides the ideal illumination and styling makes the whole room— and those in it—look better. Lighting can actually change the mood of the bathroom and it can also help to ensure you have a good start and end to your day. Be sure to install ample lighting in key areas such as in the shower and near the primary mirror. “Bathroom lighting can be a very important part of a remodeling or building project,” says Ann Morgan of The Lighting Gallery. “Light fixtures can coordinate with the plumbing, cabinet hardware and the granite and tile surfaces in a bathroom. More importantly, the correct bathroom lighting is essential for illumination and practicability, as well as beauty.”

BEYOND THE CURTAIN
Clumsy curtains and awkward frosted doors can lend a cluttered look to a bathroom. Sturdy, clear glass shower enclosures offer a modern look and a larger sense of space. “A glass shower enclosure can be installed in any shower,” says Joe Mujadzic of Century Glass and Interiors. “There are really no limitations as long as it is measured, fabricated and installed by a professional glass door installer.” Mujadzic says from the time of the consultation and final measurement for the new glass enclosure, the process takes about 7 to 10 days for completion. He also says the cost savings depends on the condition of the existing shower. “If your tile is in great condition and if you do not have any issues with it, your savings can be substantial,” says Mujadzic. “New shower glass enclosures do not require that changes be made to the shower pan, tile or design to accommodate a new glass shower.” SAVE WATER IN STYLE
Toilets are the main water wasters in the home. According to the EPA, toilets account for nearly 30 percent of indoor water consumption. Replacing older, ineffective toilets with new high-efficiency toilets can LEFT: Photo courtesy of Century Glass & Interiors.

dramatically reduce water use. Also, adding an eco-friendly toilet can help to update the style of the bath by providing a more contemporary feel to the room. Many of the latest, water-efficient toilets available take up less space than older toilets, so you can gain several inches of floor space in addition to saving water. A new showerhead can yield lower bills, too, for both water and the energy used to heat it. By replacing an existing showerhead with a powerful low-flow model, homeowners can enjoy their showers while saving water and money. According to the National Kitchen and Bath Association, aerators are considered the single most important water conservation device your faucet or shower head can have. They make efficient use of the water that flows through them, usually by mixing air into the water stream. They can save as much as 50 percent of your water usage and reduce the amount of energy used to heat the water, by as much as 50 percent as well. If an aerator is already installed on the end of your faucet, you should be able to read its rated flow imprinted on the side. The rating should be no more than 2.5 g.p.m. (gallons per minute). If your aerator is rated at more than 2.5 g.p.m., it should be replaced. Faucet aerators generally cost less than $10.
Tub-to-shower conversion overlays, such as Bath Fitter and ReBath, can transform your old bathtub into a spacious shower that is age-in-place friendly.

STEALTH TOILET
The patented hydraulic and watersaving technology behind Niagara Conservation’s Stealth toilet involves a remarkable combination of air and water working in unison, which helps to deliver a cleaner and more reliable flush. Because Stealth technology maintains pressure in the toilet’s trapway instead of the tank, it produces a surprisingly quiet flush without residual noise. In addition, the Stealth features a sleek, stylish design and is easy to install. The system is also capable of functioning efficiently at varying water pressure levels and has no expensive parts to replace, providing further savings to the homeowner. Multi-light fixtures are ideal for bathrooms. Photos courtesy of The Lighting Gallery.

CHOOSING A BATHROOM VANITY TOP By the National Kitchen & Bath Association If you’re looking for a bathroom countertop—usually called a vanity top—look for something that will stand up to water, soap, toothpaste, cosmetics, and alcohol- and acetone-based liquids. Replacing a vanity top is a feasible do-it-yourself project since you don't have to replace the whole vanity cabinet if you don't want to. Most bathroom vanity tops are surfaced with one of the following five materials: • Granite and marble • Laminate • Solid surface material • Tile • Wood GRANITE AND MARBLE
Though marble and granite are unrivaled for their beauty, at $125 to $250 per running, or linear, foot (as measured from one end of the counter to the other), these classic materials warrant careful thought. Also, while marble stains easily, granite shrugs off most stains, except grease, especially if the granite is unsealed. If a solid sheet of stone for your countertop is beyond your budget, granite or marble tiles may be substituted at a lower cost. The Manhattan line of vanity cabinets from Xylem comes with an array of countertops including stone, glass and china.

Cultured marble is less expensive and is made from real chips of natural marble embedded in plastic. It's available in sheet form and in standard counter dimensions of 19 and 22 inches deep. Cultured marble comes with or without a wash basin molded into it, for $50 to $80 per running foot, installed. Although easy to clean, cultured marble must be well cared for. Once scratched, it cannot be resurfaced. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for what type of finish to apply to cultured marble to best protect it. LAMINATE
This marble-topped vanity and stone sink allow the festive small glass tile backsplash to stand out. Photo courtesy of New Ravenna Mosaics.
At an installed price of $24 to $50 per running foot, laminate offers good value and performance. As a result, it’s the most widely used countertop material in bathrooms, just as it is in kitchens. Various manufacturers market laminates under different brand names, but they're all based on the same principle—a stack of thin plastic layers bonded together under heat and pressure. Laminate countertops clean easily and are resistant to water and stain. However, laminates can burn, wear thin, and dull over time. Hard blows can chip or dent the plastic, and there's no remedy short of replacement. Available in many colors and patterns, laminate finishes range in texture from high-gloss smoothness to a mottled, leather-like look. Dealers usually have a few standard patterns in stock; you can view color chips in the store to order others. Do-it-yourselfers can buy prefabricated laminate vanity tops or have them made to order with a hole for the sink cut where needed. Installing the finished countertop is a fairly easy matter. You can apply pieces of laminate material to an installed particleboard countertop, but a professional will do the job best.

SOLID SURFACE
WOOD
Solid surface countertops offer many of the advantages of stone with few of the drawbacks. Cast from an acrylic resin that sometimes include crushed stone—particularly quartz—solid-surface material demands little maintenance and is extremely durable. Intense heat and heavy falling objects (which shouldn't pose much of a threat in bathrooms) can cause damage, but scratches, abrasions, and even minor burns (if you leave a curling iron on the vanity top, for example) can be repaired with fine-grade sandpaper. The methods and tools needed for working with this material are similar to those required for woodworking. However, some manufacturers require that a trained pro fessional install their materials. Solid surface material is available in white, beige, pastels, and imitation stone, usually in ready-formed vanity tops with integrated sinks. Prices range from about $100 to $250 per running foot installed.
As a countertop surface, wood is attractive, versatile, and easy to CENTURY GLASS & MIRROR CO., install. It is, however, especially vul281.499. 9570 nerable to water damage, and its porosity makes it difficult to keep CRESTWOOD CONSTRUCTION, 832.388.5371 clean. MARATHON SPA & BATH, Maple butcher block is a popu281.342.8775 lar countertop material in the the kitchen, and it sometimes appears MIRROR MAKEOVER, in bathrooms as well. Available in 281.305.3444 24-, 30-, and 36-inch widths, butcher block is thicker than vanity tops, so to install it you may need to modify plumbing connections. Costs for wood countertops run $25 to $40 per linear foot, installed. To find a local bathroom remodeling professional who can help you purchase or install a bathroom vanity top, search for fabricators and installers in your local area at NKBA.org/ProSearch.
TILE
As it does for floors and walls, ceramic tile makes an attractive, durable finish for countertops. It's available in many colors, designs, and textures. Grout lines that trap dirt and encourage mildew are a major drawback, although new grouts and sealers help alleviate these problems to some degree. Costs range from $10 to $40 per running foot installed. Getting professional results with tile is a challenge for do-it-yourselfers. A slightly irregular look can be appropriate for rustic, unglazed quarry tile, but most other tile varieties demand greater precision. Using pregrouted tile sheets, or sheets of mosaic tile on a mesh backing, makes it easier to space tiles evenly.

pet of the month ¡HOLA AMIGOS! I’m a 10-month-old Chihuahua mix with the good fortune to have the old-school name of Betty. I love all the famous Bettys: Betty Grable, Betty Page, Betty White. Those gals had style, panache and bravado. Remind you of a certain breed of lovable, yet assertive pooch? Well this Betty is down on her luck, lookin’ for love in all the wrong faces. Don’t get me wrong, I love other dogs, but I’d really like to cuddle up with you and watch black-and-white films on AMC. Could you help a dame out? ID# 213193
