mitha Verma wants to help make your furniture look old again. But she understands that most DIY aficionados don’t want to spend the weekend sanding and priming. They want a new look and they want it now. Knowing that, she worked with chemists to come up with her own brand of chalk-style furniture paint, a creamy paint that applies easily and dries quickly to a velvety, smooth matte finish. The antiquing finishes are either gray or brown, giving each piece a new old look. But to stay with a beachy look, Verma suggests that all the finishes in the house should be light: the floors, the backsplash and the walls, as well as the furnishings. “The kitchen is always the center of the house and the light, fresh colors make the room welcoming,” she says. If stone or tile is chosen, she suggests light, neutral colors to keep to the relaxed look of the room. In terms of decorating, she recommends casual seating rather than formal arrangements. “Use ottomans, poufs and throws in the room to keep a comfortable, escapethe-city feeling,” she says. Chairs and couches should be covered with the wide selection of durable outdoor upholstery. “I prefer the fabrics made for outdoor furniture for indoor furniture because it wears better and can handle stains and wet bathing suits without any damage to the fabric. For lighting in the living room, dining room, entryway or other areas, Verma likes the beaded chandeliers that are affordable while also making a statement. So, although a room’s hard surfaces are painted in basic, subdued and muted tones, she brings the necessary color into a room through art, rugs and other furnishings. One of the popular techniques Verma teaches in her workshops is a layered chippy (or crackle) paint look that gives furniture or furnishings an aged and casual flair. Verma, an interior designer and antiques dealer, says not all pieces of furniture are candidates for updating. Fine antiques should not be painted, but items that are in poor condition or vintage pieces that have no real value can be enhanced, up-cycled and made to look old again, but this time with style. Verma offers hands-on classes each month: a beginners class as well as one that teaches advanced techniques, such as distressing, two-color layering and intricate detailing. “It is not difficult to do but the change to each piece gives it a whole new life,” she says.

I
n his poem, Mending Wall, Robert Frost debates the concept of whether “good fences make good neighbours.” As the spaces between homes get ever more narrow, a good fence often does help, but what about those intruders who climb under, over or through those fences? From mosquitoes and flies to wildlife and feral cats, sometimes we need a little help protecting our homes and gardens from invasive species.
RACCOONS, POSSUMS, SNAKES AND RODENTS Raccoons are attracted to the food in our garbage cans, as well as pet food, bird seed, goldfish ponds and even chicken coops for those in more rural areas. For those of us lucky enough to have fruit trees, dropped or ripened fruit can also be a draw. Opossums are also in search of some of these same foods and though they’re primarily nocturnal, will sometimes come out during the day if food is scarce or it’s cold. Both of these animals have been known to come in through pet doors or make their way into attics, bringing along fleas and possibly diseases in the process. into our yards and homes. Venomous snakes such as copperheads, cottonmouths, rattlesnakes and coral snakes are a danger to family and pets. Rats and mice have been known to spread more than 35 diseases, transmitted through live or dead rodents, or by contact with feces, urine, saliva or their bite. The good news is that there are folks who not only aren’t afraid of these creatures, they’ve also developed humane ways to remove and relocate them, far away from your home. In fact, companies like Animal Control Wildlife Inc. have even been called on to remove coyotes, alligators, wild hogs, gophers, skunks, bats, bees and squirrels. And we thought we had problems!
FLIES AND MOSQUITOES Along with the warmer weather come the mosquitoes, and Harris County Public Health offers great tips for protecting us from mosquito-borne diseases. When outdoors, use an EPA-registered insect repellent to help prevent bites: Look for products that have either DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus/PMD, or 2-undecanone. Other tips include wearing socks and long sleeves and
pants, or placing mosquito netting over infant cribs and strollers. Keep storm drains clear of lawn clippings and limbs, overturn any standing water from flowerpots or bird baths, and install or repair screens on windows and doors. House flies are just as much of a nuisance, and can spread as many as 200 known pathogens and parasites to humans. They touch down on trash cans, dead animals and manure, then transport disease agents into our home. These are more difficult to combat, which is where a good screen system can become your best friend. FERAL CATS Everybody knows that colonies of stray cats can grow exponentially if left unchecked, giving birth to as many as three litters of kittens each year. oad-tripping is one of the great American pastimes. Whether you’re looking forward to a few extra days off during the Easter, Memorial Day or Independence Day weekends, or you’ve got some vacation time built up and you’re itching to spend those days, we’ve mapped out some fabulous driving vacations not too far from Houston.
SAND BETWEEN YOUR TOES There’s nothing like a trip to the beach and thankfully we’ve got miles of them along the Texas Gulf Coast. From sunrises and sunsets over the water, to looking for seashells or touring historic buildings, we’re recommending Galveston for a day or weekend trip and Rockport if you’ve got the time. In Galveston, history buffs will want to check out the 1877 Tall Ship Elissa at the Texas Seaport Museum, the historic homes tour in May, and the Galveston Railroad Museum. Music lovers can enjoy regular jazz events at the Tremont and Hotel Galvez and, beginning in June, live music and fireworks at Moody Gardens and concerts at Ashton Villa. Connoisseurs of the finer things should consider the Galveston Island Wine Festival and the recurring ArtWalk. While in Rockport, be sure to visit the Texas Maritime Museum, don a hard hat at the Fulton Mansion, and visit the Fulton Schoolhouse Museum and Rialto Theatre. Nature-lovers will enjoy the flora and fauna at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge; and can’t miss celebrations include the “Taste” of Rockport-Fulton, the kite festival, and the Rockport Wine Festival. POINT YOUR WAGONS WEST Head west on Highway 290 or Interstate 10 and discover a part of Texas that seems far removed from Houston’s concrete jungle: gentle rolling hills, green pastureland that goes on for miles, and small towns that still have one foot planted firmly in the past. Underneath that sleepy facade you’ll find robust cultural communities with fine art, live music and celebrations of everything from bluebonnets to cotton. Explore the rich history of Texas in Chappell Hill, Brenham, Washington and Burton. Washington on the Brazos State Historical Park, the Antique Rose Emporium and the Burton Farmers Gin should all be on everybody’s bucket list. Historic downtown Brenham has become a hot spot for live music and eclectic dining, plus original murals and an antique carousel, but don’t overlook a tour of the Blue Bell Creameries. Chappell Hill has a lavender farm and its own Main Street shops, and grave sites from the Crockett and Travis families can be found in its historic Masonic cemetery. Continue your historical tour in the towns of Fayetteville, Gonzales and Bastrop. Fayetteville celebrates its popular ArtWalk and Chamber Music Festival in May, and bicyclists from all over converge in June for the Summertime Classic. Gonzales — home of the Come and Take It Paddling Trail — has livestock shows and rodeos in the coming months, plus tours of historic homes, the county jail and Pioneer Village. There’s something for everybody in Bastrop: walking and driving tours of historic homes, a luxe spa day at the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort and Spa, communing with nature in the state park, or enjoying the Sherwood Forest Faire in nearby McDade. Adrenaline junkies will want to Zip Lost Pines or hit up the Cotton Bowl Speedway in nearby Paige. If you’ve got an extra day, we recommend driving a bit further to explore the towns of Wimberley, Fredericksburg, Stonewall and Kerrville. Fredericksburg is celebrating wildflowers and antique tractors this season and nearby Fort McKavett has its Heritage Days in May. Stonewall puts its focus on lavender and the mighty peach, while Kerrville is known for its folk and arts festivals. Try to visit Wimberley in May to tour the beautiful gardens, then visit some of the local wineries or take time for a swim at Blue Hole.

HEAD FOR THE BORDER While we all anxiously await the bullet train between Houston and Big D, the highways are still the best way to get to north Texas. Some of us have folks in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and others are attracted to the varied landscape and myriad cultural opportunities further from home. McKinney’s a great starting point with its historic downtown district. The Collin County History Museum is featuring a “McKinney, Then and Now” exhibit and this month also brings Arts in Bloom, a celebration of art and wine. If you find yourself in town come July, don’t miss the Red, White and BOOM! event with a parade, car show, concert and fireworks.

For a look at history, explore the historical sites around Denton or find yourself in Lewisville for the 75th Anniversary Commemoration of D-Day in June. Architecture buffs should check out the Turtle Creek home tour this month in Dallas or the Gingerbread Trail in Waxahachie come June. We loved the treasures from Paul Michael Company when it popped up at Round Top last month. Dig deeper at their brick-and-mortar location in Canton and try to get there during May’s balloon festival. Continue that shopping spree at Antique Alley Texas, so big that it spans two counties. Celebrations for wine, art and music abound in this region. There’s the Granbury Wine Walk in April, a butterfly festival in Plano in May, tours of the gardens in Celina come June, and a peach festival in Weatherford this summer. hen Mark and Amanda Basford were planning their home in the Magnolia area, just outside The Woodlands, Mark wanted a place that reminded him of his childhood visits to see family. After all, the couple had six acres available for their plans, so nearly anything was possible. After a few consultations they decided to give studioMET Architects the goahead to build their dream home in the woods. The architect-led design-build firm normally works in Inner Loop neighborhoods so, for them, getting to work on a property like the Basford’s was a thrill. “We do work typically in urban settings. You have a house to the left, right and behind you. If you get a corner lot, that’s exciting, but a rural setting gave us an opportunity to play with the siting of the home and how it interacts with nature,” says Shawn Gottschalk, principal and partner at studioMET. 48 house& home | April 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

The result was The Porch House — a sophisticated invention of modern living with simple geometric forms and strong horizontal lines that embraces the natural surroundings. It poses a juxtaposition of defining a protected, enclosed space while also balancing the untouched surrounds of that same building. First came the challenge of finding just where to situate a path to the house that would cut down the fewest number of trees possible, a decision that led to a meandering circular driveway through the heavily wooded site, and where the house slowly expresses itself as visitors get closer. Upon arrival, the house resembles a C-shape, with the driveway leading to a porte-cochère. The entrance in the middle of the C leads to the grand foyer. Rooms finished with natural sealed concrete fill the home. To the left is a four automobile carport, the kitchen, caterer's kitchen and expansive pantry. The kitchen countertops from Illusion Stone run 12 feet wide with an eight-foot-tall book matched porcelain backsplash, and the appliances were sourced from K&N Sales. To the right is a full lounge, bar, wine room and the master suite. The space lends itself to hosting parties and events, which the 50 house& home | April 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
Basfords are known to do. Other elements found throughout the home include tile from La Nova Tile, light fixtures from Light, and plumbing fixtures and hardware from Ferguson. Designed for relaxed everyday living and outdoor entertaining, the house’s semi-circular shape places a focus on the internal courtyard. The covered patios are a modern interpretation of the Texas wraparound porch, perfect for southern outdoor living. The arrangement of the living spaces around the large, open courtyard helps bring the natural world into the heart of the domestic realm while still feeling protected from the natural surroundings. “There’s a strong connection between inside and outside. It blurs the lines between the two. There are brick walls on the inside and continuing to the outside. It’s manmade and created, and nature is the backdrop. Whether you're in the master bedroom, or in the pool or in the living room, you’re looking at nature beyond you,” Gottschalk says. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide a constant view of the wooded areas surrounding the home as well as the interior courtyard, the true star of the property. It features a pool from Cascade Pools and a large floating deck that helps extend the living space into the nat-

ural habitat. The courtyard boasts both a formal patio and a more casual day-to-day patio with an outdoor fireplace from Perfection Supply, as well as a hot tub and an outdoor kitchen. The second floor provides space for family and additional bedrooms, creating a perfect spot for their son to call his own in the 7,600-square-foot home. StudioMET Architects also made sure to position the house within walking distance of a workshop where Mark spends a good portion of his free time. “The homeowner has a shop out there working with wood and metal,” says Gottschalk. “The wife is a doctor, and he is in IT and, for the most part, he's behind a desk 8-5 and he needed some creative outreach so he does woodwork.” For Gottschalk, the opportunity to work on a project like this not only gave him the chance to escape the urban and embrace the openness of the rural, it gave him the ability to turn his client's dreams into a reality. “We’re designing a house for people and not just for ourselves,” he says. “It’s special listening to Mark's upbringing and his childhood experience, and then we’re taking those memories from his grandmother’s house and aunt’s house to create a place to raise his son in.”

T
he focus this year for the Rice Design Alliance 2019 Houston Architecture Tour is on the theme “Adapt” — how architects and homeowners have modified their living spaces to adapt to changing climate conditions, growing families or the specificities of a neighborhood. Unlike other architecture tours, this tour — scheduled for April 27 and 28 — is organized around a theme instead of showcasing one neighborhood or recent construction, says Raj Mankad, RDA’s editor. “Much in contrast with current trends in building unnecessarily large and inefficient homes, the six homes featured this year all reuse existing space and respond to social, economic and environmental changes,” says Mankad. “By adapting their space through renovations, additions, retrofits or elevation, these homes maintain Houston’s residential fabric while avoiding becoming obsolete in an increasingly evolving housing landscape.” For example, the Mediterranean style house at 1903 56 house& home | April 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
Bellmeade, first designed in 1926 by Charles W. Oliver for advertising executive Pierre L. Michael and sensibly rehabilitated in 1987 by William F. Stern, underwent a second major renovation recently by homeowners Andrew and Gretchen McFarland. Working with architect Eric Hughes of HR Design Dept, the couple increased the footprint of their 3,300-square-foot home by constructing a 1,400-square-foot addition plus a 600-square foot garage. “They were able to adapt their older home for their family but still keep the landscape and scale of the house and preserve the outdoor space,” says Hughes. What they built was a two-story addition — a master suite and a family room upstairs — over a glass-enclosed sitting area that enhanced the pool and courtyard. Andrew McFarland is an architect and his wife Gretchen is an interior designer, so the trio collaborated on the architectural changes to make the addition look seamless to the original stucco house. And, to make it work, there had to be some sacrifices.
The teal paint is dark and dramatic, though side windows, a glass door and pop-outs help make the intimate bedroom feel airy and bright.
Room sizes were scaled down to match the existing house in the limited area for the addition; challenges also included working around the air conditioning and heating system. But, Hughes says, the final product turned out to be spectacular. Starting with the compact courtyard and the new pool and spa, Hughes says they adapted them to seamlessly become part of the landscape behind a wall as well as the entry into the house and a glass enclosed room. This new room, a more formal sitting area, has bifold doors on both sides, allowing the area that connects the house and the addition to be a flexible indoor-outdoor space for the family. The upstairs of the addition is a large family room for relaxing and television watching and nestled behind it is a private office. The remainder of the upstairs is the master suite: a series of rooms that loops around the addition. First visitors enter a private sitting room that leads to a very, very small bedroom — only large enough for a bed and a credenza. The path then leads to a large closet, then the bathroom and another closet, before exiting adjacent to the upstairs office.

Because of the desire to keep the new construction in line with the existing house, the ceiling upstairs gave the architects a chance to be creative. They vaulted the ceiling for more volume and installed skylights to bring natural light into the room, which was painted a dark teal. In addition, the floor beneath the bedside credenza, which overlooks the courtyard with large windows, also has a glass floor that floods the room with sunshine and again marries the inside and outside of the structure. The laminated glass is thick enough that it can be stood upon, although most of it is under furniture. “The owners opted for a Jeffersonian style bedroom — pared down to the essential needs only for sleeping and some storage. It is compact and cozy, but there is ample space for the closets and bathroom,” Hughes says. “The teal is a dark and dramatic color but, because of the cascading sources of light — the side windows, glass floor and pop-outs — it feels bright. And on a sunny day the reflections off the pool through that glass floor under the credenza cast a hue around the room and give it a good feel.” Additional natural light comes through the clerestory windows

and the subdued oak wood floors help to create a soft look to the rooms. The house is still Mediterranean and covered in white stucco with the clay tile roof, but the floor plan now has been adapted from an early 20th century home to one that meets the needs of a busy 21st century family.

he six proper ties featured on this year’s Rice Design Alliance 2019 Houston Architecture Tour all have one foot in the past, but are now real-
izing new purpose under the umbrella theme of “Adapt.” Renew. One homeowner purchased his childhood home on Calico Lane and called on former elementar y school classmates, architect Bob Robinowitz and contractor Tom Forney, to edit the midcentur y ranch-style home. Without adding additional space, the architects from McIntyre + Robinowitz united the living, dining and family rooms, conver ted the garage into a librar y, and tore out flat ceilings to add volume. New window and door openings, plus salvaged wood floors and a rustic timber framing, all work together to make an updated home that is light and bright. Power. Way ahead of its time, Virginia Point was Houston’s first LEED Platinum house. Designed by

Plans to remodel a flood-damaged ranch-style home in Meyerland morphed into the need for new construction, a decision aided in par t by the Memorial Day flood in 2015, the Tax Day flood in 2016 and Tropical Storm Har vey in 2017. WRAPPED IN HISTORY The Flowers Continue to Bloom at this 1892 Grand Victorian in Bastrop By Natalie de la Garza
C
hristine Cartwright admits to being less than thrilled when her husband, Lieutenant Colonel Donald Cartwright, a recently retired Weapon Systems Officer with the United States Air Force, told her he wanted to restore an old home. “I swore he had never had Hammer 101 before,” laughs Cartwright. “But he drove me nuts for three years [about it].” The couple looked at dozens of homes but it wasn’t until they visited a Methodist minister in Bastrop, less than an hour southeast of their hometown of Austin, that they found the perfect house sitting right across the street – the H.P. Luckett House. The 14-room, Queen Anne-style two-story is named for its first owner, Dr. Humphrey Powell Luckett, who purchased the property in 1892. The lot, once the span of an entire city block, previously housed Bastrop Academy and, later, Bastrop Military Institute, which prepared young men, including Sam Houston, Jr., for service during the Civil War. leading the Institute to relocate to Austin and the City of Bastrop to take control of the land, using its buildings as schools until the establishment of a public school system. No longer in need of it, the City of Bastrop sold the lot to Luckett, an expert on yellow fever who was named Bastrop’s city health officer in 1897. Luckett razed the existing structures and hired architect Louis G. Mauer to design a $14,000 eye-catcher, with bay windows, fish-scale shingles, and two big, wraparound verandas. Though subsequent owners Alex and Lucille Waugh turned the one-family dwelling into a three, converting the upstairs into two apartments while residing downstairs, Mauer’s exterior went virtually unchanged, catching the eye of the Cartwrights who, in 1983, became only the home’s third owners. Cartwright says the first thing her husband did was remove the screen from the screened-in upstairs porch — “He said, ‘That screen does not belong there,’” recalls Cartwright — and return

the then-white house back to its original green hue. Inside, the Cartwrights chose to gut the beadboard kitchen, which Cartwright says was so old it was beginning to turn. They started over, installing a period-appropriate tin ceiling. “We had to rip that out or put something over it, so we put the tin over it,” says Cartwright. “It’s the same pattern that they used back then.” The kitchen cabinets are made from wood salvaged from several different places, including the lower front porch and a nearby home damaged in a fire. And speaking of wood, Cartwright says her husband copied one of the three ornate carvings found in the hallway and placed it above the kitchen sink. Fretwork can also be found on the two downstairs entry doors. Cartwright says when the couple chose to stain and varnish one of the doors, it took three weeks and dental picks to get the paint out of the deep grooves. Cartwright describes the décor as “purely Victorian,” adding that two downstairs living areas still have the original wallpaper and one room has the original carpet. “I can’t say that it looks gorgeous,” admits Cartwright, “but my husband would have a fit if he found out I changed the wallpaper or the carpet.”

The draperies, however, were all sewn by Cartwright, and another 250 yards of fabric wallpaper the hallways. “We took many a trip to Houston to buy fabric,” says Cartwright. Today, Cartwright’s primary residence is an upstairs suite. During World War II, when the upstairs was divided into two apartments, Cartwright’s sitting room would have been a tenant’s living room, her bedroom their bedroom, and her master bath their kitchen. “At one time, there were three kitchens in this house,” notes Cartwright, adding that other than a moved door, no major architectural changes have been made. “There’s just so many things that were done, but nothing destroyed.” Despite the majesty of the grand Victorian, Cartwright’s favorite piece is an upstairs cabinet, made with French doors of stained and etched glass that she bought for her husband. “We didn’t go in for a nice ring or earrings,” says Cartwright. “We always gave each other antiques for gifts.” Looking back on living for almost 36 years in a house on the National Register of Historic Places, For years the Cartwrights celebrated special occasions with gifts of antiques instead of jewelry. 68 house& home | April 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

Little Alsace Texas of
The S teinbach Haus is Castroville’s Visitor Center. Built in Walbach, Alsace, France between 1618 and 1648, the house was a gift from the citizens of Alsace to Castroville because of the Alsatian roots of the original immigrants that settled here in 1844. The fachwerk framing was shipped to Castroville and Alsatian volunteers came and rebuilt it, and then donated most of the period piece furnishings. A
pril showers might bring May flowers, but Florescence is bringing the blooms early. Flowers, art and creativity will abound at the 13th biennial Florescence at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. One of the largest competitive national flower shows sanctioned by The Garden Club of America, the event brings together some of the most brilliant and innovative minds from the botanical world for two days of horticultural excellence — all set amidst the backdrop of gorgeous art. This year's theme is “Time.” Jointly presented by River Oaks Garden Club, The Garden Club of Houston and MFAH, the show presents talented designers, gardeners and artists as they interpret the theme in the areas of floral design, botanical arts, horticultural specimens, horticultural design, photography and needle arts. 76 house& home | April 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
Florescence - “Time” opens up a plethora of presentation ideas according to event chairs Meg Tapp (The Garden Club of Houston) and Carmen Knapp (River Oaks Garden Club). “[The theme] needs to be something that is a little vague so that it can be interpreted through the art of the flowers. You have creative license,” they add. The idea is to allow spectators to see the arrangements born from artists’ minds as they use the theme as a catalyst to ignite their inspiration. One might find photos of flowers in picture frames for a play on “time frame.” In the next room, designers could be making Kentucky Derby hats for “race against time.” There may be pressed plant materials for “once upon a time,” or the floral arrangements could be a reimagining of a current exhibit in the museum.
After all, flowers equal power right now, and they will transform the MFAH into something most people haven't seen before. The show will consume 15 of the museum’s exhibit rooms, and it couldn’t possibly smell any better than to be surrounded by all those blooms in the Houston springtime. For extra measure, the event will welcome British floral guru Joseph Massie, one of Europe’s top botanical artists, as a guest speaker for a demonstration as well as a lecture and luncheon. “He won the RHS Chelsea Flower Show five times in a row and is the youngest person to do that,” the chairs gush. “He’s commissioned work with Universal Studios, Boston MFA, the Queen’s Jubilee for her 80th birthday, and the wedding for Kate and William. He’s up and coming and well known.”
