s the season shifts from spring to summer, the planning of outdoor celebrations revs into high gear. Be it Mother’s Day (don’t forget!), Memorial Day, graduations, or Father’s Day, backyards and balconies across the area are being readied for festivities. We hope the ideas, advice and images in our Outdoor Living issue help you get started or finish up current projects. From durable outdoor furniture and garden accents to gas grills and pristine pools, this issue is intended to stir your spirit for the summer season. A pre-summer ritual for pool owners in this area is the annual late-spring cleaning of the pool to prepare for swim season. As the owner of a 1980s pool (and its original equipment), I am familiar with the routine of cleaning up the pool and its hard-working parts. Well, to be honest, my husband is even more familiar with the process. So it seems this spring’s pollen siege, and perhaps the past winter’s hard freezes, caused this year’s pool clean up to perplex us both for weeks. Our previously proven formula of vacuuming, adding chemicals, brushing all surfaces, adding more chemicals and running the filter non-stop just wasn’t working. Meanwhile the water in the pool proceeded to go from slightly greenish to seriously murky. We began referring to it as “the pond.” Dreading that we were in for major pool equipment repairs, we finally opened up the filter

unit. Ah hah! Multiple parts had cracks and holes and would need replacing. After installing about $80 in parts and leaving the filter off or a full week, one vacuum job and a standard chemical dose transformed the scary sight into a sparkling oasis in just 24 hours. The moral of the story is to stay on top of pool maintenance and to check equipment before reaching for chemicals. Pool owners: see our pool prep article for more tips. Now if you want to see some examples of beautiful backyard ponds that are intended to be havens for water plants and colorful fish, check out the Lone Star Koi Club and Houston Pond Society’s annual Water Garden and Pond Tour, June 4-5. Lone Star Koi Club and Houston Pond Society present the annual Water Garden and Pond Tour, June 4-5. This year’s tour features more than 20 private water gardens and koi ponds. The popular self-guided tour ranges from serene backyard garden ponds, to patio-sized "disappearing" fountains, to huge multi-pond landscapes, complete with tumbling waterfalls, lush landscaping, dancing dragonflies, blooming water lilies, graceful fantail goldfish and show quality koi. Many of these ponds and gardens were designed and built by the homeowners themselves, who will be on hand to answer questions about ponds and water gardens. Classes Gardeners looking for knowledge and ideas will always find an impressive variety of classes at The Arbor Gate. On May 5, Judy Barrett leads What Makes Heirloom Plants So Great. Learn about the characteristics of heirloom plants and how their toughness, ease of propagation, and diversity make them ideal to grow in any garden. She demonstrates that heirloom plants, with their personal and cultural connections, can become as valuable and treasured as a great-grandmother's cut-glass bowl or a quilt that has been passed down for generations. Judy will be available for a book signing after the lecture. Information: 281.351.8851 or www.arborgate.com. Houston Arboretum & Nature Center offers two dates for its Build Your Own Rain Barrel workshops, May 1 and 8. Cost is $75 for members/$95 for non-members. Cost of workshop includes materials to make one rain barrel. All tools will be supplied. Additional barrels and conversion kits will be available for sale at the end of class for $55. The Arboretum features Summer Survival Tips for the Garden & The Gardener on May 17. Learn how to grow, harvest and enjoy herbs without losing your cool. With over 30 years experience growing and using herbs, instructor Susan Wood shares practical and inventive ways to beat the heat while working in the garden. Find out what to do now to protect your herb garden during our most difficult growing season. Offsite, the Arboretum has organized a Wildflowers & Texas History Tour on May 14 throughout the Post Oak Savannah eco-region of Texas. Clean & Modern Updating their awkward, dated bathroom results in shower of compliments BY JOETTA MOULDEN • PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANET LENZEN
After working with Shelterstyle.com on their living room renovation, Lynn and Paul called for help in updating their upstairs hall bath. The room was very dramatic when it was remodeled 25 years ago by a previous owner but never really functioned for their lifestyle. “After I saw the creative way you tackled our living room, (“Sociable Space,” Houston House & Home, May 2008) I knew you would be able to come up with colors and a tile plan for our bathroom, which we felt needed help,” Lynn explains. As the couple renovated their home through the years, their interiors had gradually evolved into a clean, more contemporary style, and they wanted a more user-friendly hall bathroom with a shower (not just a bathtub) for family and friends. The couple called on me for color and tile advice and Tom Wilson, AIA for the bathroom’s architectural consultation. “The entire time our daughter lived at home she had to use the master bath to shower before school,” Lynn said, which was not convenient, especially when she had a bedroom-sized bath of her own to use. Later, when the room became a guest bedroom, where were guests going to shower — the master bath? Not hardly.
AFTER: A spacious shower with pebble tile floor, marble surround and luxurious fixtures added functionality and good looks to the bath.

BEFORE: The bath had no shower and was not user-friendly for family and guests. The wood chest stuck out into the room and looked visually heavy.
Lynn already knew that she wanted to gut the bath and start over with a large shower and new vanity, so I listened carefully to Lynn’s needs and her plan. I proposed she paint the walls Benjamin Moore’s Edgecomb Gray HC-173 to smoothly blend with the other colors in her home, and to match the ceilings throughout the house (Pratt & Lambert Accolade Super One Coat White). The trim was matched to the existing off-white trim in the room. We met one other time at La Nova Tile to select the rectangular shower, wall and floor tiles and agreed on a white pebble shower floor tile (from DalTile). TIP: When using pebble tile, wet it first to get the true color of the tile. We found the white marble shower door surround and step at Olympus Tile & Marble. Since all of the traditional shutters in the house are from The Shade Shop, Lynn chose to keep them for consistency, and chose John Blair at Clearwater Builders to spearhead her bath renovation. “John was willing to schedule and work with the subs that I had used for years. Those subs are extremely good at what they do and know I demand perfection. It is not easy to find a contractor to work with someone else’s subs—with a smile on his face. John is a delight to work with,” she explained. Lynn used master plumber Byron Gutierrez, master electrician JR Snell at Systems Unlimited, Westheimer Plumbing for bath fixtures and Lone
AFTER: The floating bamboo vanity and vessel sink added needed storage and visual warmth to the room. BEFORE: The pedestal sink allowed no storage and there was little storage for a hair dryer and toiletries except in the nearby closet.
TRADE SECRETS • Paint consistently gives the most bang for your buck. • Get creative. Turning a bathtub opening into a spacious shower can really expand space and make a bathroom function better. • Clear Lucite furniture and lighting can add function and bounce light around without taking up visual space. • Sometimes the most effective strategy is not to add square footage to your house, but to first rethink the space under roof that is already paid for.

Star Glass for the frameless shower surround. Lynn had selected tile and marble and was working with Evans Cabinet & Door on the floating vanity, but she wasn’t 100 percent sure all of the elements she’d selected really worked together. “I’m not good at blending colors and materials and you are. I had learned from working with you on the renovation of our living room that your input was invaluable and resulted in a better outcome. So having your help with paint and tile decisions was fantastic and I could not have achieved the look I wanted without your help,” she added. Lynn explained that selecting complementary tiles and wall colors was difficult,
but that the most difficult thing to visualize was the positioning of the vessel sink, wall-mounted faucet and floating vanity in the room. “The mirror, light fixtures and faucet had to be exactly correct so they would be comfortable to use with the sink”, she said. Ultimately, the wall was sheetrocked twice before it was straight enough, which required re-sheetrocking an adjacent wall. “The finished bath exceeded my expectations by a mile,” Lynn explained. “Everyone thinks it is the most beautiful bathroom they have ever seen. It’s clean and contemporary and comfortable to use. My daughter wishes we’d remodeled it while she was still living at home!”

AFTER: A frameless shower with bench and shampoo niche added function and opened up the bathroom. Since storage was no longer an issue, a clear Lucite parsons table from Crate & Barrel visually opened up the space in front of the windows. The Lucite lamp is from Design Within Reach, towels are from Restoration Hardware, shutters are from The Shade Shop. BEFORE: The bulky chest provided storage but it was not convenient to the sink area and therefore was not functional.

“With today’s economy, a lot of people are going for remodeling vs. buying a new home,” says Jamie Allum Pruett, Galveston Sales Manager for Traditional Designs Ltd. “It’s an easy upgrade to replace countertops – or even just doing the kitchen island.” “Many families are finding that it is better to stay in the homes that they already own and invest in the kitchens and master bathrooms than to buy a new home that costs more money and is not necessarily a larger or better home than the one they are in currently,” says Micqui McGowen, a Certified Master Kitchen and Bath Designer with Kitchen & Bath Concepts. “By investing in their existing home they are raising the value 22

of their current home and improving their lifestyle with less of a disruption and for a smaller investment than moving laterally and still having to redo the major spaces like the kitchen and master bathroom.” GOING FOR GRANITE
“Granite is still a very popular choice,” says Pruett. “It’s very cost-effective and offers multiple finishing techniques, such as honing or a leather-like texture.” “We love mixing granite and manufactured stone in our projects,” says McGowen. “Manufactured stone is more durable than marble or granite,

For those pondering their budget, Richard Kalmick, owner of USA Kitchen and Bath Company, explains what he calls the “good, better, best” range of options. “We can come up with a plan to fit anybody’s budget,” he says. “It’s important to be honest about your budget upfront, that way we can do what you want in the price range you’re comfortable with.”

project SINKING UP
In addition to gaining gorgeous countertops, Pruett mentions that upgrading these counter surfaces gives homeowners the opportunity to install an undermount sink. “Then you can just sweep all the mess into the sink—it’s a big motivator,” says Pruett. “We fabricate the stone on site,” says Pruett. Her family’s Traditional Designs is a Heights-based company with a full showroom adjacent to their slab yard. “Customers can help determine the layout of their selected stone with our shop foreman to achieve the look they want.” The company also has a showroom and sales office in Galveston, which opened after Hurricane Ike. Once selected and ordered, granite countertops can be fabricated and installed within about 7 to 10 business days. “We seal all of our granite and marble and back it with a 20-year warranty,” says Pruett. “If you’re ever worried about the seal, try the water drop test: sprinkle a few drops of water onto you countertop. If it beads up the seal is fine, but if it absorbs, then it should be resealed.”
LEFT: A more modern example of the bright, white kitchen with more subtle detailing on the cabinets and countertop edges. Soft, neutral colored walls add just enough contrast. Photo courtesy of Kitchen & Bath Concepts.

project CLOSING IN ON CABINETS
If you are considering new cabinets, Pruett offers up that the doors are about 80 percent of the cost, so it makes sense to replace the whole unit vs. just the doors. “We prefer to do a turnkey job, so there are no surprises in the end.” Kalmick favors cabinets by Cardell and Brandom, both manufactured in Texas with U.S. materials. Over the decades, Kalmick has developed a knack for designing very functional kitchens. “I work hard to accommodate the homeowners needs,” says Kalmick. “For the design process, I open every single drawer and cabinet in their existing kitchen to see what they need and how they use the kitchen.” Kalmick also advises homeowners check references of potential contractor and services professionals to determine their level of commitment to service before hiring. “High-gloss lacquered cabinets are becoming very popular again,” says McGowen. “This is a beautiful finish, but not the best finish for a family with young children because all fingerprints show up on them. Stained cabinetry is usually the most forgiving and is a wonderful option for young families. If you have a manufactured cabinet with a baked on finish, a painted cabinet is also a very good option because of the durability of the finish. If a small nick occurs because a tricycle runs into a door, you can touch it up fairly easily.” LEFT: In this kitchen, Tebas Black countertops by Silestone are another example of creating visual interest with contrast. This modern take pairs white cabinets with a coordinating foot rail near the floor. This creates a bold, graphic impact. Photo courtesy of Silestone.

Pool Season Prep
GET YOUR POOL READY FOR THE SUMMER SPLASHDOWN Photo courtesy of Robert Huff Landscape Illumination.
When you have a glistening oasis in your back yard, it’s real-life bliss. But when that treasure gets out of hand it can be a beastly 20,000-gallon burden. Fret not, or should we say, sweat not! Keeping your pool clean and clear is all a matter of simple maintenance and balance. It’s not complicated — it just needs to be done regularly. Be sure to use enough sanitizer, sufficient water movement, the proper pH, and regular brushing and vacuuming. Here is a checklist to help get your pool clean and clear for the summer: 1. Inspect filter and pump for damaged/worn parts 2. Change or clean filter media if needed 3. Purchase new parts for filter and chemicals for the season 4. Leaf bag debris from bottom of pool
38
house& home | M a y 2 0 1 1 | h o u s e a n d h o m e o n l i n e . com
5. Shock pool, scrub sides and bottom 6. Filter continuously for a few days, backwashing as needed to keep filter media clean. Scrub daily if algae was present. 7. Shut pump off to allow dead algae to settle overnight. Vacuum the next day and begin filtering again. Vacuum to waste to avoid reintroducing algae into the pool. (If you are opening a pool that is really green or yellow, repeat steps 5-7 until water clears.) 8. Adjust chlorine levels to maintain 1.0ppm and pH to 7.2-7.6. Add clarifier. Keep filtering another 24 hrs. Add algecide and monitor pool every few days for chlorine use, pH and clarity. Add chlorine at night. Adjust filtering times to keep pool clear. You may only need to filter 8-10 hours a day for the rest of the summer.

KEEP IT CLEAN
Follow these steps to keep pool sanitary and working safely and properly. Consider hiring a professional pool company, at least once annually to double check your work and spot problems or maintenance items you may have missed. If you have a cartridge filter replace cartridge element every 2 years. Sand filters should have their sand changed every 5 years. Once system is started, adjust valves and return fittings for proper flow. Check for leaks around pump and filter; repair as needed. Note start-up pressure on filter gauge. When psi is 10 lbs above this number, backwash the filter. Empty pump basket also at this time, or earlier if you notice a drop in filter pressure. LEFT: Photo courtesy of Reflection Pools

EQUIPMENT INSPECTION, SAFETY INSPECTION
Spring opening time is ideal for annual preventative maintenance steps such as cleaning, lubricating, inspecting and replacing components in all of your system equipment. Consult your owner's manual and give everything a good inspection. Look for and correct hazardous electrical conditions, such as broken conduit or connectors, lack of proper grounding or bonding, wires exposed to weather, etc. Inspect pool for tripping and slipping hazards. Check again for pressure leaks which may result in pipes or equipment blowing apart. Note water level and watch the pool for leakage during the following few days. 3.
CLEAN POOL
Skim pool, vacuum pool, brush pool. Leaf rake (bag) types skim nets are best, also useful for scooping large amounts of leaves/debris from pool floor. If pool is especially silty or has lots of algae, Vacuum Pool to Waste. This means to bypass the filter, and vacuum dirt from floors/walls out the backwash line. This prevents constant clogging/cleaning of filter. To do this, you may need to fill pool to the very top, so you can waste 1-3". Place the multiport filter valve on drain to waste position (usually 2pm, if viewed as a clock face) If you have a push-pull filter valve, or a cartridge type filter there is no easy way to vacuum to waste, except for cutting the pipe coming out of the pump and then reconnecting afterwards. Brush the pool thoroughly. Photo courtesy of Adams Tile & Landscaping

Rock-Crete Foam Insulators
BARNDOMINIUMS, METAL BUILDINGS, SHOPS: ARE THEY ENERGY EFFICIENT? NO! But they can be, says Greg Pruitt of Rock-Crete Foam Insulators.
TRUE CUSTOMER TESTIMONIALS Metal buildings are some of the hottest buildings you can try to air condition. Where a wood structure may have temperatures up to 140 degrees, a metal building builds up much more heat. The fiberglass insulation holds back the heat for a short while, but then it comes blazing through, requiring excessively large air conditioners with excessively large electric bills to compensate! There is a better way – when you use our foam you can even reduce the amount of tonnage needed to heat and cool by a large percentage. Hi, I am Greg Pruitt, and although there are many “Johnny come latelys” out there, we have been here for years installing foam insulation and informing our customers about its benefits. We have worked with builders, homeowners, cities and air conditioner contractors. We work with both new and existing structures and can show you how to save thousands and thousands of dollars in the coming years. When Urda and Minnie Lincecum of Normangee decided to build again, they chose to recreate their former home as a metal building. I recently had the pleasure of seeing the completed house. As you drive up, the home is very pleasing to the eye, and when you walk in, you believe you are in a custom-built home that would have cost thousands more. The last thing they wanted was a hot house and high electricity bills. They had heard many differing stories about foam insulation.
After talking with other insulators, they were convinced that Rock-Crete Foam Insulators, Inc. knew what they were talking about. They talked with owner Greg Pruitt and were impressed with his knowledge not just with foam insulation, but of air conditioning as well. Previously, the Lincecum’s electric bill for thier 2,700 sq. ft. home was over $300/mo. Now it is approximately $100/mo. “We are so pleased with our barn/home/garage. We could not be happier. Our bills are ridiculously low, and we’re more comfortable than we have been in any other home. Greg’s knowledge of foam and his knowledge of air conditioning have really paid off. We could not be more pleased. The job was done on time, and we are very proud of the smoothness of the application.”

BACKYARD SEASON
VACATION AT HOME WITH A LITTLE OUTDOOR OPULENCE
An undeniable trend for Houston homes is the move to lush and plush outdoor living. The range is wide—from high-dollar outdoor kitchens (also called summer kitchens) to do-it-yourself accent lighting along a path. But the move by homeowners to expand their living area out into the outdoors is underway. ENHANCING THE EXTERIOR
Wayne Ball, president of Lone Star Building & Construction Services, Inc., says, “Summer kitchens are more than kitchens— they’re entertainment areas. Twenty years ago, we were just

putting in brick barbeque pits. Now it’s the whole entertainment ambiance. Things like formal fireplaces, fire pits, gas grills, ice makers and wine coolers, refrigerators and flatscreen TVs.” His clients tend to build summer kitchens not only because of the value they might add to the property, but also because of a strong personal preference for outdoor living. The cost of construction varies, but he stresses, “A true summer kitchen is not inexpensive.” Ball regularly sees homeowners who spend from $40,000 to $50,000 putting one in. Because of the large financial outlay, he encourages people to tell their contractor upfront what their budget is so that the contractor can lead them in the right direction. And what are people cooking on in their outdoor kitchens? Mike Logan, owner of Texas Pit Crafters, a company that designs and manufactures grills and burners, says, “People are

putting all the capabilities and luxuries into their outdoor kitchens.” These cooking options include burners, grills, smokers, charcoal pits, griddles and deep fryers. Recently, he has also built pizza ovens for outdoor kitchens. “The kids love it and the real masonry ones are wood burning, so they can double as a fireplace,” he points out. The material of choice at Texas Pit Crafters is high-grade stainless steel. “If you want long life and low maintenance, stainless is the way to go,” he says. “But not all stainless is created equal.” To test for high quality, Logan suggests two methods: 1. Ask the manufacturer about the warranty. If it is a limited warranty, then that raises a red flag. 2. Apply the magnet test. If the magnet sticks, then it’s not high quality. One interesting observation that Logan shares has to do with who is cooking outdoors. “It is truly an egalitarian venture these days,” he says. “Couples are cooking together outdoors who wouldn’t necessarily share the indoor kitchen.” ILLUMINATING ADVICE

“Landscape lighting is for beauty, elegance and security,” says John Dailey, owner of Robert Huff Landscape Illumination. “It increases the use of your yard at night and brings out the depth and width of the

property. It also enhances the curb appeal in the front at night.” Basically, there are two types of landscape lighting: low-voltage and high-voltage. “Low-voltage lighting is most often used in lower areas, for small trees, along paths and in ponds,” explains Martin Ayanegui, designer and director at HomeOfficeHouston.com. “Low-voltage lighting creates really nice effects and can be done either by do-it-yourselfers or professionals. It is fairly easy to hide the wires and is safe for kids.” High-voltage lighting requires a professional because you need a permit to install it and it must pass an inspection. Each project, property and homeowner is unique, so it is impossible to quantify the cost of landscape lighting. DIY-ers can most likely install a fairly simple layout for as low as $500. On the high-end—well, the sky is the limit.
Sizing up Outdoor Furniture Attention must be paid to seating and lounging comfort. To that end, Design Within Reach offers its Scoop collection featuring a unique herringbone pattern in minimalist shapes. Especially eye-catching is the Scoop Chaise for $1,550 with an ergonomic fit ready-made for relaxing around the pool. Trex Outdoor Furniture makes several styles—tables, chairs, lounges, rockers and swings—made of 90 percent post-consumer bottle waste, an exceptionally durable plastic. This lumber contains UV-inhibited pigment systems that reduces fading, perfect for our harsh summer heat. Currently available online.

OUTDOOR DÉCOR DECORATIVE TOUCHES TURN UP YOUR OUTDOOR AMBIANCE
Plants and pavers are certainly major elements of your landscape, but the appeal of your outdoor atmosphere can get a beautiful boost from a few eye-catching garden accents. A sculpture, an arbor, or just the right table and chairs can really create that charm that many homeowners desire. The Houston area offers many unique garden wonderlands that provide plenty of ideas and unusual products. Twelve years ago, special requests from her husband Frank’s landscaping clients prompted Suzan Galvan to establish her now sprawling shop that features antique and reproduction garden accents. “Our customers have molded what we offer,” says Suzan Galvan, owner of In the Garden. “They’ve shown us that they want unique, high-quality items, not run-of-the-mill, disposable garden décor. We look for quality pieces that can be enjoyed for a long time.” Galvan says her clientele ranges from homeowners, to interior designers and landscapers. Galvan is a big fan of hand-crafted bistro sets from France, and she proudly points out vintage versions and modern incarnations, made by the same French company more than 50 years apart. “You can see the craftsmanship is still there. “We saw a radical change after 9/11,” says Galvan. We saw homeowners focusing more on life at home, seeking to create a peaceful retreat at home, rather than travel the world.”

BY SANDRA COOK
“When customers find us for the first time, you can tell it’s much more than they were expecting,” says Galvan. “They pause at the gate – it’s a lot to take in – before they delve into this wondrous experience that ignites their projects and ideas.” “People come to see us for the things the just can’t find anywhere else,” says Billy Frazier, owner of Frazier’s Ornamental & Architectural Concrete. Frazier’s is a destination for homeowners looking for large items, such as fountains, statuary and garden accents, or anyone searching for ideas and inspiration. Frazier’s barn is surrounded by acres of ornamental and architectural concrete, pottery, bronzes, carved granite. Frazier’s is a good source for estate-size statement pieces, such as classical statues. You can also find Asian accents, such as lanterns and pagodas, as well as touches of whimsy in the form of gargoyles, lions, even a large Nessie, the Loch Ness monster. “With the ongoing drought conditions, having birdbaths and fountains is very important,” says Frazier. “We offer all shapes and sizes. If you’re looking for green options for your garden, Frazier’s offers wine barrel planters, rain barrels and composters. You’ll also find trellises and arbors to support vines for shading your home and outdoor living spaces.

You can spend money on new patio furniture and endless hours getting your garden in shape, but all that hard work is tarnished if your patio isn’t up to par. If you don’t own a power washer, you can easily rent one or hire a service. Clean your existing patio furniture. Use a mild dishwashing available at Island Furniture. soap and a soft brush to spruce up your outdoor furniture. Clean your grill, inside and out. On cookout day, you’re not going to want to spend time scrubbing and scraping, so do that early. For best results, use a wire brush after every use and you’ll only need a quick touchup the next time you fire up the grill. Pick-up stray sticks and leaves, and trim back shrubs or bushes that look scraggly. Not only is an unkempt yard unsightly for guests, sticks can be a tripping hazard. Add fresh mulch to flower beds and other landscaped areas. This will give your patio and/or deck a beautiful, cleaned-up appearance while protecting young shoots as they sprout up.

“HI, MY NAME IS BELLA. I’m a little shy because the Houston SPCA rescued me from a pretty “ruff” situation, but I have to say, I’m totally excited about finding a new, loving home for good! I may look like just a pup, but I’m full grown. I’m a 3-year-old Chihuahua/ Short Coat mix, so I’m the perfect size to sit in your lap, or go for a walk, or just about anywhere. I might be a little timid at first, but once we get to know each other, you’ll see I can be the sweetest little girl in the world! Won’t you please come by the Houston SPCA shelter and say hello?
