EDITOR’S NOTE

Give it five minutes... and the weather will likely change. There's a lot of truth in that old adage. Yesterday, it was a sunny breezy day. This morning, it's rather chilly and windy. During the night it rained cats and dogs. But for a couple weeks in April (we're always a month ahead when putting out this magazine), we got stuck in a rut – with what seemed like a daily downpour of rain. Remember? Can't curse it, 'cause we always want and need it! But, admittedly, I was feeling a little waterlogged, as I'm sure many others were, too. So, this past weekend, I rejoiced at having a sunny day to work in my small island garden. I picked up five large Orange Drop Irises at Tom's Thumb Nursery in Galveston – the island city and its surrounding sister communities we're featuring this month in a special attached supplement that begins on page 35. I immediately planted the irises in front of a quaint picket fence and then weeded and replanted what I had for a more pleasing effect. My efforts paid off when visitors noticed. Gardens and yards certainly do convey a first impression. If you're also in the mood to do some gardening, you may want to read what Shirley Barr has to say about attracting birds and butterflies – on page 76. She relays some great suggestions from those experts at Cornelius Nursery at Voss, where HOUSTON

Local landscaper David Morella shared on his page how to keep monarch catapillars happy enough so they don't devour your entire garden. “You must provide a lot of milkweed,” he says about the host plant for the Monarch butterfly. AFTER: With the bar gone, the larger dining now has room for a bigger table and six chairs. A single chair replaces the sofa. When entertaining, the black-and-white chairs can be pulled up to the table to serve as host and hostess chairs. Terry created the “Statue of Liberty” art on the coffee table out of a rock and a metal “calf weaner.” BEFORE: The wet bar forced an odd furniture placement and made the traffic flow difficult.

22 house& home | May 2015 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

Kay and Terry Doyle first contacted me to look at their behemoth, load-bearing wet bar, unfortunately located in the center of their living and dining rooms. “The bar had us stumped — literally— for 16 years,” Terry says. “We talked to various carpenters, homebuilders, even a structural engineer, and it was always the same… ‘Removing it will require expensive steel structural supports to hold up the attic and roof.’ We needed someone with a can-do attitude who also understood our budget.” The couple desperately needed new flooring, lighting and additional seating, but could not move forward until they knew what configuration the bar would take. In addition, they were forced to position their furniture in what seemed like the only way possible.

“Instead of being an open, inviting space, it was a roomful of furniture corrals,” Kay explains. GETTING TO WORK Terry e-mailed photos of the eyesore, and after studying them, I immediately knew I needed to call in my design associate, Amy Abbott, for her architectural expertise. Before we arrived, Terry was skeptical. “We were actually going to pay someone to tell us how to rearrange our furniture? If I really thought about it, it sounded crazy. Boy, was I wrong,” he says. The first visit was a real brainstorming session, with four of us kicking around ideas and measuring the furniture to see what would work. “You even found a place for my grandmother’s round ’50s coffee table we had stored for years under our bed,” Terry says. “And by moving Kay’s highboy from the bedroom into the foyer, you made room for a TV armoire in our bedroom.” TIME TO REARRANGE When arranging furniture, I like to have seating greet you like a curved clamshell, welcoming you to come in and sit a spell. The Doyles’ two sofas set up roadblocks to navigate around. To evenly distribute the weight and open up the space, we relocated the armoire to the opposite wall of the living room and placed the sofa against the other wall, where it would take up less space. Instead of using the striped sofa, we suggested a single chair. We also said that two small-scale chairs would serve them better in front of the TV. We told them about Southwest Surplus, a hotel furniture liquidator. They loved that cost-saving source and ended up buying their black chair frames there and a new sofa from Star Furniture, following Amy’s exacting size parameters. I also encouraged them to go ahead and hang the funky crystal chandelier they already had purchased at Sherry’s Antiques and to paint the fireplace brick and living room Behr “Parisian Taupe,” a deeper color that would make their art collection stand out. The fireplace divided the room in half, and painting the brick would make the room feel larger and less chopped up. I suggested they call Forsyth Floor Co. to install their new flooring, Quick-Step Laminate Perspective 950 Uniclic in “Jatoba.”

BEFORE

AFTER: Creating a piano nook freed up space for the new painted music cabinet, larger dining table and chairs. New laminate floors, additional seating, paint colors and lighting transform the space. BEFORE: Bar, unpainted brick fireplace, dated lighting, piano and low-hung ceiling fan dated the living room, adding high “grandma factor.”

TRADE SECRETS To eliminate costly mistakes, hire a professional to resolve all structural changes. Perfectly good hotel-salvaged chairs can be stripped and reupholstered for pennies on the dollar. With professional space planning, you can be confident that the furniture and rugs you buy will fit and look great. Sometimes the most ef fective strategy is not to buy more furniture and accessories for your home, but to rethink the pieces that already are paid for.

24 house& home | May 2015 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

TENDING BAR Amy got right to work on the wet bar. “The columns on the front were load-bearing, so they couldn’t be removed. Located along the ‘spine’ of the house, the columns were responsible for carrying a goodly portion of the weight of the roof-peak support beams,” she notes. “Kay was thinking in terms of installing built-in bookshelves there, but when the question of what to do with the piano came up, I knew I had the answer: a dedicated piano nook,” Amy says. “After getting to know Kay and Terry, the nook idea blended beautifully with their personalities and taste for ‘one-of-a-kind’ elements.” Fortunately, the piano was just the right width. By removing the serving bar between the columns and also reducing the depth of the space, we created extra room for a nice buffet and a wider walkway behind the wall.” “Why didn’t we do this sooner?” Kay wonders. “We had a written to-do list from you with paint colors and other tasks, and Amy provided us not only with working construction drawings for removing the bar, but Auto Cad furniture floor plans with very specific size limitations on furniture we wanted to buy — so we knew everything would fit before we went shopping,” she explains,” including the 10-by-14-foot rug from Texas Oriental Rugs. “Amy’s lighting plan was excellent in highlighting our growing collection of outsider art. I had no idea that scaling down that bar would be such a catalyst for the complete transformation of this room. It’s really incredible. “After all our uncertainty about painting the fireplace, it has turned out to be a great choice,” Kay says with a smile. “Terry added an industrial dragline chain inside the gas fireplace, which becomes ‘art’ in itself. The room has become much more of a reflection of who we are as a family. We didn’t want the space to look like a home decorating catalog nor too ‘matchy-matchy.’ We wanted a space that is comfortably sophisticated, yet not too serious. We like my grandmother’s mismatched reupholstered wing chair with our black-and-white chairs and the small steel table made from a cream separator we found at Installations. “In the past, when friends came over, the first thing they saw was the wet bar,” she adds. “ Now when people enter the front door, their first response is ‘Wow! Where did the bar go?’” Joetta Moulden offers home makeovers using your own home furnishings. You may be so dog tired at the end of the day, you may not even notice or care what type of sheets are on your bed. But your purchase choices could affect both your health and pocketbook. Then again . . . . . . . Maybe you buy the highest thread count there is to ensure a lovely, luxurious and pampered sleep. But is the money-is-no-object attitude justified? Thread count is basically a way of measuring the softness and overall quality of the sheet and its expected lifespan. A count, which can range from 180 to 1,000, refers to the number of vertical and horizontal threads per square inch of the material’s weave. Most in the industry say to buy sheets with a thread count of at least 250. However, most agree that sheets with a count of more than 400 offers negligible benefits -- considering the high dollar prices associated with the higher thread counts.

Of all the weaves, the glossy and shiny sateen sheet is the least durable, because it is comprised of all vertical threads. Since there is no cross weave, they tend to break down more quickly. Another weave type is percale, which receives high marks from Consumer Reports for those having a 280 thread count or more. The organization cited little shrinkage even after five washes, and the percales easily fit mattresses up to 17 inches deep. Egyptian, prima, combed and 100 percent cotton sheets all rate high among consumers who desire a softer feel. The cotton varieties – with prima and Egyptian being the most luxurious – are less likely to pill than the cotton-polyester blends. Pilling occurs when a surface defect on the sheet results in the formation of small balls of fiber. Another benefit of cotton over the blends is that the material can breathe, which prevents the sleeper from getting hot and perspiring. On the other hand, the cotton blends cost less, are durable and stain resistant, and they are wrinkle free. When buying “pure finish” or 100 percent organic, consumers receive the satisfaction of knowing no chemicals are in the fabric. The Company Store’s Shelby Blue.

That is especially good news for people with allergies or who only buy eco-friendly products. Additional natural eco-friendly fabrics include those made from silk, hemp, bamboo and linen. According to the luxury bedding company Peacock Alley, some facial creams and lotions can cause discolorations. And expect all natural fibers to shrink. Egyptian sheets can shrink up to three percent. It is unlikely to be greater than that if users avoid washing their sheets in hot water and drying in high heat. As an aside, their matelassé coverlets should be washed in cold water and tumbled dry on low. They do shrink, however, three to five inches in both length and width. If having them dry cleaned, ask for a cold water block process. “When you spend spend six to eight hours every night sleeping, shouldn’t your bedding purchases make you feel as good as that shirt or blouse you’ve been wearing during the other hours of the day?” asks Stephen Cardino, home fashion director for Macy’s. COASTAL CHARM Beachtown partners with the Annual Galveston Historical Foundation Home Tour to display new construction that honors historic style while taking it into the future.

Just outside the Porch Cafe in Beachtown.

The Manager and Chef of the Porch Cafe in Beachtown.

Calm, quiet mornings in Beachtown, on the far eastern shore of Galveston Island, evoke the simple life. As sunlit hours slowly slip by, homeowners and visitors alike delight in the ritual of Sunday brunch at the Porch Cafe. Porch Cafe is known for its coastal new American cuisine, combining fresh, local, and seasonal tastes for a one-of-a-kind flavor experience. Freshly caught Gulf seafood is always at hand, while oak barrel-aged coffee beans from Java Pura Coffee Roasters create the perfect cup of coffee to accompany brunch. The Wagyu beef from Kings High Ranch is unique to the Porch Cafe, combining its incredible tenderness and rich flavor with with high Omega-3 and Omega-6 levels. Served as a juicy handcrafted patty, a delicious all-beef hotdog, or as crispy beef bacon, the mouthwatering flavors are tantalizing. The flavors of Porch Cafe are only enhanced by the coastal setting. The wide west porch captures the fresh sea breeze, while the elegant airy interior feel invites guests to relax and enjoy. On May 2, the Porch Cafe celebrates the Galveston Historical Foundation's Annual Tour of Homes with an Opening Day Celebration & Brunch. The partnership between the Galveston Historical Foundation and Beachtown continues Galveston’s legacy of being a treasure trove of historic architecture, while providing new homes in a historic style, made with materials and techniques for today’s construction. 36 house& home | May 2015 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

Friends connect on the generous west porch of the Porch Cafe.

Below: Homes in the East Village of Beachtown.

The construction of Beachtown homes focuses on long term durability. The homes are built to “Fortified for Safer Living Standards, a program that goes above and beyond to ensure the safety and longevity of buildings. Each home is crafted to exacting standards, using strong, tested components like windstorm rated Anderson Windows and Doors. Beyond this attention to detail in the strength of construction, the quality of the construction is of primary importance. Weather-resistant materials respond to the oceanfront climate, while careful architectural detailing evokes the image of historic Galveston's architectural past. It is a place designed to endure, thanks to the vision of Duany-Plater Zyberk, leaders in New Urbanisim and planning, and the creators of Rosemary Beach and Seaside Florida. The commitment to the creation of a beloved place goes far beyond architectural or construction quality. It is that commitment that sets Beachtown apart from any other community on the Texas Coast. On May 2 & 3, and 9 & 10, guests are invited to tour Beachtown homes in various stages of construction -- in partnership with the Galveston Historical Foundation Annual Tour of homes. This tour shows the unique differences in construction and implementation of a Beachtown home. Guests will also have an opportunity to bid on a one week stay in a Beachtown home, a $10,000 value benefiting Galveston Historical Foundation. It only takes one walk through the community to see the difference that commitment to excellence makes in this gift to the Texas Coast. 37

This Home Began Life as a “Villa” Before Being Transformed into a More Southern Style The large majestic Galveston home, situated amongst a dense grove of 80 old oaks trees, has certainly seen major changes in its 159-year history. The house, formally called the “1856/1889 John H. Hutchings home” in the island’s Kempner Park, was built as a two-story brick Italianate villa. Following two major renovations, it is now a three-story, sprawling home and opens to the public this month during the Galveston Historic Foundation’s 41st Historic Homes Tour. Located on almost three acres at 2816 Avenue O, the house was built for newlywed couple John and Minnie Hutchings. He was a banker who commissioned the original house as a Greek Revival/Italianate villa in 1856, reminiscent of the romantic Looking West toward the home from the Southeast.

renaissance Italian villas, according to etchings at the Rosenberg Library. It originally had a double gallery porch that spanned the front of the house and a tiny enclosed widow’s walk. But following

the hurricane of 1885, Hutchings hired famed Galveston architect Nicholas Clayton to “modernize” the structure and it was redesigned in a Romanesque fashion, with arched windows and a skin of stucco all over. Clayton also added to the floor plan an expansive third story and a porte-cochère on the side of the house. Additionally, the main entry to the front porch changed, reconfigured as a onestory, Southern style veranda. Today it is a comfortable home to Fred and Pat Burns, who have owned it since 1996. They have put their personal touch on much of the house, but its bones are reminiscent of 19th century Galveston. “Yes, it is a huge house, but it is really no different from other homes we’ve owned. It is very livable,” Burns says. “It has a different feel perhaps because of the high ceilings, but the space is comfortable.” The front terrace features cement columns and gas lamps. 44 house& home | May 2015 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

Architectural characteristics – such as the gold-leaf decorative design on the hallway arches and along the ceilings and fine details sculpted into the seven fireplace mantels – create an elegant yet nonfussy look. The main staircase, carved in Switzerland and installed in 1885, includes a “mythicallooking beast” crawling down the bannister, says Burns. Guests enter the house either from the side covered entrance or front piazza porch, which is covered in beautiful old terra cotta and white tiles dating back a hundred years. Large gas fixtures mounted adjacent to the front doors gives the home a southern touch. The view from the porch is a maze of gnarly oaks and huge palm trees, but it is serene despite it facing a busy Avenue O. Once inside the hall entrance, two things stand out: the incredible light that pours in from the many large windows and the details ingrained in the interior’s woodwork in every room. The study features an original fireplace surround. 46 house& home | May 2015 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

Two floor-to-ceiling matching mirrors from 1885 dominate the walls of the front parlor. Comfortable couches and chairs decorate the room, along with a large fireplace, which is original to the house. Beyond the parlor is the second grand hallway, which leads into a packed library that beckons book lovers to browse or read. The original kitchen and butler’s pantry – bright twin rooms in a black and white motif – are conveniently located next to an intimate breakfast room and the large, maroon-colored dining room, with a table to easily seat at least 12. A lovely leaded glass door opens from the dining room to the garden outside. Above the table is a massive Baccarat crystal tiered chandelier, one of the few fixtures the Burns did not have to replace. “It probably doesn’t shine as brightly as new ones, but it’s original,” says Burns. Hanging on the walls on the main A “mythical beast” crawls down the bannister of the home’s staircase, hand-carved in Switzerland in 1885. 48 house& home | May 2015 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

floor are historical photos of the house and its owners: the Hutchings (1856-1917), Honorary Consul to Japan J.H. Langhen (1926-1947); first owners’ grandson Sealy Hutchings Jr. (1947-1985), who bequeathed it to the University of Texas Medical Branch. The Burns bought it from UTMB. The property and house were declared Texas Historical landmarks in 1962. The second floor of the house is where the family lives: bedrooms, closets, bathrooms and an office. It is rather traditional in style. But things get very interesting on the third floor, which was added by Clayton in 1885. “Every house had to have a ballroom,” adds Pat Burns, who selected all of the furnishings for the house. She worked with the late Dave Barker, a Galveston architect, and Houston contractor Lenny Durante, to update the house to its current condition. At the top of the third floor staircase, a huge skylight illuminates the dark paneled area during the day. A massive hallway and four rooms on this top floor – a sitting room, a wet bar, a media room and an exercise room -- are connected with pocket doors that open up to make this house’s ballroom. The sitting room, which has a pool table, is encircled by a high shelf with a model Santa Fe train running around it. And, tucked away at the top of the stairs in the orchestra pit. “What’s interesting is because of where the pit is, when the musicians play you can hear the music throughout the house,” Burns explains. “It really has a wonderful sound.” The Hutchings house, along with eight others, is open May 2-3, 9-10 for the home tour.

The dark gray room off the library is a perfect place to cozy up with a book or enjoy intimate conversation. With the double crown molding, it conveys a more traditional vibe here than other rooms in the house. The furniture, in aubergine gray slipcovers, underscores the family's casual style.

SIMPLE ELEGANCE, INSIDE & OUT, DEFINES THIS HOME BY SUSAN FOX • PHOTOGRAPHY BY ZAC SEEWALD

It’s not just another pretty ‘face” in Houston’s tony Tanglewood neighborhood, this house. This European country-style home, owned by Brig and Marcia Smart, is a very thoughtful collaboration by both architect and builder. The house design embraces a good size lot of 18,000 square feet and purposefully avoids pretense. “The exterior mapping of this house reflects what is going on inside. I like that,” says architect Kelly Cusimano, principal of Cusimano Architect. It does not get caught up in “more is better” architectural embellishments that sometimes end up forsaking a home’s truest intent. 54 house& home | May 2015 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

Tarek Midani of Midani Homes built this home as a luxury “spec” and he, too, wanted to ensure its uncompromised integrity. “It is a well done house, simple yet elegant and full of light,” says interior designer Ginger Barber, summing up what both Midani and Cusimano had intended the house to convey. “It’s a house that could easily go traditional or more contemporary,” she says. She notes architectural style and detailing can sometimes drive interior decorating decisions to go only one way or another. But, this house was easy to decorate around, and one that that offered some options.

The Great Room, located in the center of the house, connects to the TV room and kitchen. Interior designer Ginger Barber says they painted the existing chandelier to lighten up the look. A second-story mezzanine wraps around the space.

55

The foyer is a beautiful space, says Interior designer Ginger Barber. The family placed a grand piano there, located near the entrance to a wine cellar.

“My clients love a more cottage look,” she says. “So we opted to go with a lighter, softer palette of whites, grays and pale-pale blues,” Barber says. Inviting light and outside views inside was a purposeful intent by Midani and Cusimano. When it came to designing the house, preserving the yard space and ensuring every room had a view of the backyard was paramount, according to Cusimano. The back of the house is U-shaped to ensure room views, in addition to expanding the livability of the outdoor area. On one side of the leg of the “U,” is a covered al fresco living room with fireplace and seating. On the opposite side is an outdoor kitchen. This design helps guests enjoy the yard

more by encouraging movement – as opposed to having everyone congregate only in one area. “You can cook and serve on one side of the yard, and lounge on the other,” explains Cusimano. The Smarts bought the home as it neared completion. As they told Cusimano, whom they already knew, “Why spend a year to design and build another house when this one fits the bill?” One of the more magnificent interior spaces is the Great Room. “It’s a pretty dynamic space,” says Cusimano. “It is double-story in height and located in the center of the house, also offering contact with the TV area, kitchen and other rooms. “A second-floor mezzanine wraps all the way around the Great Room,” he adds. “It is a very soft and pleasing room, thanks to its clean lines and minimal ornamentation.” Reclaimed rustic beams and the seven-inch wide engineered character-grade French Oak floors work together to warm it up.

What is your design philosophy? Never be too fussy. And never be afraid to make decisions in the moment. Some of the greatest successes are when I made a decision with a client in the spur of the moment.

Garden Accents, Inc.

How do your clients’ tastes or personalities influence design projects? They are my number 1 concern. They know what it takes to live in their home every day. I will definitely speak up if I think they are making the wrong decision. But otherwise, it’s always a collaborative process and that is such a great thing.

Visit our factory showroom at FM 2920 & Treichel Rd. where you’ll find waterfalls, fountains, water walls, garden ponds, benches & statuary. For your convenience, deliveries & set ups are available.

What’s the first thing you ask a client when starting a project? Whether it’s a young family or business professional, I always ask what is a typical day in this room like. That usually gives me the clues I need. Immediately my client tells me everything they dislike about their current space. Then I ask what the perfect day in this room would be. Aspiration turns into inspiration on how I can give them a comfortable space that works for their lifestyle.

What initially drew you to interior design? I think my parents knew first. When I was 8 I kept shoving the furniture in my room from wall-to-wall and demanding that they repaint. How can a potential client know if a particular designer is a good fit for their project? It’s all about the relationship that you establish with your client. If there’s an immediate rapport the first time I talk to someone, I know that everything else will work out. And they will have the room of their dreams.

The house was designed with the backyard and outdoor living in mind. Reclaimed beams and brick add both interest and warmth to this area.

The Great Room’s painted brick fireplace complements the look of the house’s exterior. According to Cusimano, the painted brick on the exterior also conveys a desired warmth. And a cut-stone parapet wall along the roof ’s edge offers a pleasing aesthetic as well as smart weather proofing. He and Midani chose to dress up the home’s backside with a simulated cedar wood siding by James Hardie – a selection from the company’s Artisan product line, and added a cantilevered bay window jutting out over the outdoor living room. Hardie’s thick high-grade Artisan product conveys a robust feeling and offers a deeper, shadowy line for effect, according to Cusimano. While the Smarts and their three children live comfortably in this five bedroom, six bath house, Cusimano and Midani are currently planning their next collaboration.

The Mystique of a Bellaire Cottage REFLECTS THE PERSONALITY OF THE LAWYER WHO LIVES THERE BY MARSHA CANRIGHT

The classic Bellaire bungalows of the 1940s and 50s have all but vanished from its tree-lined streets. Built on deep lots, the once familiar structures were replaced years ago with larger, opulent houses. Still a few of these gems survive. Situated on a corner lot, one such house has a neutral brick and shingle exterior, but inside, it’s the epitome of subtlety and style. "It’s like a Faberge box. Beautiful. Simple. A jewel of a house,” says Houston designer Kelly Gale Amen who worked hand-in-hand with the homeowner to create her ideal living space. Amen opened his design business, Houston KGA, in 1974, after graduating from the University of Oklahoma and working at 66 house& home | May 2015 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

Foley’s. He began building furniture in 1990, and now has his own lines of pillows, benches, and most recently, fabrics. “People do not realize how much their environment controls their mental and emotional well being," Amen says. However, this homeowner – attorney Jayme Partridge – is aware. “She’s about simplicity, beauty, minimalism, and quality, and that’s what the interior embodies,” says Amen. With 1,850 square feet of living space, the designer knew that every inch of the interior should be functional, and outdoor spaces were important to extend the reach of the house. In the back garden, an enormous Ash tree spreads its leafy arms

ABOVE: The centerpiece of the dining room is a seven-foot hardwood dining table, designed by Amen; the base was upholstered in velvet and resin-covered. The base top is a mosaic of stained glass. A wall installation of mother-of-pearl tile adds an elegant sheen to the room. The oak floors are original to the house. BELOW: The kitchen (below left) is a sleek galley designed by contractor Kalen Gralka, with wood cabinets and Viking appliances. The floors are durable cork and bamboo. The living roomwalls (lower right) are a clean, neutral white with minimalist furnishings slip covered in white linen.

to create a serene respite from the busy outside world, and adjacent to the living room, a second hidden garden is awash in morning sunlight with an arbor of greenery and one of Amen’s shapely triple benches. “To have the best environment, you must know how you want to use your energy and time. You have to be clear and clever about how you use the space you have. Then you can accomplish magic,” he says. If you’re trying to fill a 25,000 square foot house with high quality furnishings, it can be tough on the budget. However, that’s not true for a smaller home. “In a manageable space you can have beautiful things, and you can surround yourself with what you love, which is what this client wanted to do,” he adds. The designer was engaged to make the most of the home's good bones— large and airy principal rooms with lots of natural light. Here’s what he did: In the entry, an enormous mirror to the right surprises you. “You open the door, and when you turn, you are looking at yourself,” he says. The walls are a clean, neutral white with minimalist furnishings slip covered in white linen. The dining room features a wall installation of mother-of-pearl tile, adding an elegant sheen to the room. The centerpiece is a 68 house& home | May 2015 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

seven-foot hardwood dining table, designed by Amen. The base of which was upholstered in velvet and resin-covered. The base top is a mosaic of stained glass. The table is angled to fit eight diners. The chairs are various shapes and sizes and can be pulled into the living room to make more seats when entertaining a large group. The center of the house is a lounge area with gardens on both sides, anchored by a large sectional sofa with an ottoman working as a cocktail table. This room is equipped with a large screen television with surround sound. The master bedroom is simple with a low Italian platform bed made of mahogany. Bedding is a combination of custom pillows from KGA and selections from Plush on Westheimer, along with the owner’s personal collections. “It’s layers and layers of cotton, linen and silk,” he says. The walls are painted in a neutral white with a pearl glaze that makes it glow softly. Amen worked to incorporate Partridge’s personal pieces. “It was like a pyramid, making this into a sculpture of things from her past, present and future,” he says. “It’s important to work with the clients’ collections and mostloved pieces because that gives a true layer of creative energy,” says Amen.

“When you walk into the home, your turn to see yourself in a huge mirror,” says designer Kelly Amen.

Interior designer Kelly Amen.

The guest bedroom has a higher bed with a linen headboard. The bedding, floors, and artwork evoke the same spirit as the rest of the house. “Simple, simple, simple,” Amen says. There is no heavy drapery, only simple white shades and shears. The third bedroom was turned into a closet for the homeowner’s collection of shoes. He designed built-in cabinets using the craft of Houston artist Omar Angel Perez. The cabinet with the baskets was from a local antique shop and works to keep things in order. The kitchen has been reconstructed and realigned as a sleek galley by contractor Kalen Gralka, with the Axys Design Group. It features wood cabinets and Viking appliances. To ground the space, Gralka chose durable cork and bamboo flooring for the kitchen and refurbished the original oak floors in other parts of the house, which suits the simple aesthetic. Helping to create this interior was a pure pleasure, and the process held few, if any obstacles. “For me, design never ends. A good design plan leaves room for the constant joy of experimentation,” he said. The best part? “When the client loves the house,” says Amen.

ated with a degree in Apparel Design and Textile Science, it was her husband’s job transfer to Malaysia that really put her on today’s path. She is the principal of Mela & Roam, a company specializing in old handmade textiles.

Where are you originally from? If not here, what brought you to Houston? I’m originally from Louisiana and moved to Houston when my husband and I married in 2005. He works in oil and gas, so Houston has been home for 10 years now.

Courtney Barton Tossed over a chair, blanketing a bed, or spread across a table, the one-of-akind kanthas add a pop of color, texture, and global interest to your space. We handpick each throw directly from the women stitching them, so our assortment is always highly edited and well curated.

72 house& home | May 2015 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

How did Mela & Roam begin, and tell explain the origin of the name? In 2009, my husband and I moved to Malaysia for his job. I spent my time soaking up the culture and met many artists and wonderful people during my travels around Southeast Asia. I often asked locals for recommendations and that would snowball –before long I would be taken to a cousin's neighbor's friend's aunt's house to see their basement, a stockpile of antique textiles. I became fascinated with the people and their passion for their craft, and also the product itself. This is where the name “Mela” comes from –it's a Hindi word that means a fair where different communities would gather to sell and trade their village’s wares. “Roam” because I don't have a brick and mortar storefront, but rather I sell through local design markets, traveling trunk shows, online, or by appointment. Being from Louisiana, I also love that in Cajun French “Mais La,” which sounds the same as “Mela” means, “Well, would you look at that!” In May of 2011, after settling back in Houston, I bought space at a local antique show on a whim and had my overseas contacts rush products to me. The dohars were purchased in multiples and customers began reordering immediately. Dohars are hand-loomed from 100 percent cotton, light as a feather, and serve as the ultimate blanket for hot & humid temperatures. In other words, they’re perfectly suited for Southern homes. I've never received more than two dohars in the same print and about 90 percent of my stock is one-of-a-kind, so when customers fall in love with one particular piece they know it's likely they'll never see it again. What is your background? After graduating from LSU in Apparel Design & Textile Science with a minor in Business, I moved to New York and had the honor of working as an embroidery designer for Chado Ralph Rucci. While I've always had an inherent love for the handmade, working under couturier Ralph Rucci took my passion to another level. Do you have an office and staff? If so, where? I balance the business with staying home with our two young children, so I office out of my house near downtown Houston. It’s nice to have clients drop in, and I help them design bedrooms, spruce up a sofa, or just grab a few gifts, and they can also see how I utilize the dohars, pillows, throws and furniture in my own day-to-day living spaces. I am fortunate enough to have an incredibly talented part-time employee who is invaluable at shows and behind-the-scene operations.

A whimsical assemblage of textiles are right at home in this little boy's room: block printed “Palm” pillow, vintage kantha-turned-pillow with fabric tassels, hand-stitched striped bedcover, and an old Japanese carp flag dangling from the ceiling.

(Photo courtesy of Urban Grace Interiors) Mela & Roam's textiles were used throughout Coastal Living's 2012 Ultimate Designer Beach House in Rosemary Beach, Florida.

(Photo courtesy of Urban Grace Interiors) Dohars are generously sized and easy to launder, making them the perfect lightweight blanket to complement your comfiest chairs.

Mela & Roam is well known for subdued Indian block prints. Pillows and blankets in soft, natural tones effortlessly blend into any décor.

Where can prospective customers buy your creations? I have a Web site that I strive to keep frequently updated since much of what I offer is one-of-a-kind or custom. Locally, I participate in shows such as The Vintique Flea and DASH (Design Antiques Show Houston), take appointments at my house, and host an annual trunk show in December that’s become one of my favorite events of the year! Also, my furniture can be purchased through One Kings Lane.

been draped across my desk chair. Clients often inquired about it, so I spent nearly a year amassing a collection of vintage pieces in nearperfect condition. These incredible blankets are flying out the door, and I love that they are given another life with clients here in Texas – and one even making its way to Greece! The majority of my textiles are made on hand-looms and printed or embroidered utilizing centuries-old techniques. Often the largersized dohars will have seams so that no fabric is wasted and every scrap used. I adore that quality and find it makes the pieces even more special. Creative resourcefulness is something I treasure most about the artisans I work with.

Tell me about what you sell, and perhaps the inspiration behind the lines? In today's big-box world, it is crucial to preserve generational traditions that carry a history, quality, and sentiment that defies generic mass-produced goods. I love the element of surprise in giving ethnic global finds a modern aesthetic, and my customers do too. Textiles and textile-products will always be the core of my business, but I'm not afraid to bring in other pieces as well. Whether that’s home décor, jewelry, art, or random one-off curios, I believe my clients are as excited and inspired by well-designed, ever-changing offerings as I am. What are your personal favorites? On one of my trips to India, I bought a gorgeous old phulkari, an embroidered silk and cotton ceremonial wedding shawl that has since 74 house& home | May 2015 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

Who are some of your customers and how do they use your product line? My customers have varying styles, but all share a love for quality and heirloom-worthy pieces with a storied past. My favorite client is someone who can take the most over-the-top ethnic textile, say a fully embroidered dowry bag or neon phulkari, and effortlessly mix it into a traditional setting. Surprisingly, the majority of my clients have traditional taste. These indigenous pieces elevate a room and keep it from feeling “expected.” A bit of quirkiness and something unpredicted is a must for every room.

Getting Personal Do you travel much? If so where? What is your favorite place — for inspiration and pleasure? I recently had a new baby, so I took this past year off from traveling and instead relied on the loyal relationships I made with the artisans and friends in Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, India, Thailand and Cambodia. I'm not partial to Southeast Asia, but it's what I love and know well, so the majority of my pieces will always be come from that part of the world. I will start planning my next trip soon and can't wait to bring my husband and our two boys along. For me, inspiration comes in the form of people and color. And you don’t have to travel far for that. The South is full of colorful characters, my Grandfather Ory being one of the finest, so my love for all things unique and bright is certainly connected to my upbringing. Do you have family here? Do you have pets? What do you like to do in your spare time? My family is in Louisiana, so I spend much time up and down I10. I enjoy domestic hobbies; I love to cook, tend to our unruly garden, splash in muddy puddles with my boys, and invite friends over for good food and great laughs. For Mela & Roam information: www.melaandroam.com Mela & Roam's pillows and dohar blankets are block printed using traditional methods that date back centuries. Each piece is woven and printed entirely by hand.

GARDENING

BY SHIRLEY BARR

Texas “Natives”

Attract Birds and Butterflies to your Garden If you long for the repeat call of a cheerful robin, the jewellike flutter of hummers and the graceful sweep of Monarchs in your garden, select your plants carefully say the experts at Cornelius Nursery. “Birds and butterflies aren’t that different from people,” says Carole Dreyer, manager of Cornelius Voss. “They require food, water and shelter . . . a place to raise their family!” A backyard habitat for birds and butterflies should include:

WATER ELEMENTS like a birdbath, pond or

A curious cardinal

Buddleia, Tutti Fruiti, Greenleaf

fountain – no deep water, please. Keep the water source clean with frequent cleaning or circulation. Placement is important, too . . . a birdbath very near the house can be too close to your pets. Nice to add: small rocks or bricks for birds to stand in and around the water; flat, large rocks are perfect resting places for your busy butterflies to warm up their wings for flight.

SHELTER – Plants that offer shelter from the elements and a safe place to build a nest include azaleas, dogwoods, hollies, junipers and wax myrtles. Tree and shrub nesters include robins, jays, cardinals and mockingbirds. Bird houses should be selected for the birds you want to attract. Houses with a hole opening 1.5 inches or smaller will keep larger birds (such as aggressive blue jays) out and provide a safe home for bluebirds, wrens, finches and other small birds.

FOOD– Many of our native Texas trees and plants attract fruit, insect and nectar eaters. Berry producing plants like wax myrtle, nandina, pyracantha, yaupon and holly attract fruit eating birds. Nectar eaters (i.e. hummingbirds and butterflies) seek out annuals, such as firebush, impatiens, lantana, pentas, petunias, salvia and zinnias. Perennials that attract nectar eaters include coreopsis, daylily and shrubs like Carolina jasmine, esperanza, honeysuckle and wisteria. Try to plant for continuous blooms, as butterflies need nectar throughout the adult phase of their life span.

Firebush with butterfly

“Adult butterflies are attracted to red, yellow, orange, pink and purple blossoms that are flat-topped or clustered and have short flower tubes,” adds Dreyer.

HI, I’M EVA! I’m a two-year-old Boxer/hound mix and am told I’m a sweet and playful pooch. I love to be around people. My previous owners were always amazed at how great around kids I am. I may be just a little shy when first meeting someone, but I warm up very quickly, especially if you give me treats or something to play with. Speaking of playing, my favorite toys are ropes or stuffed animal toys. I like to chew so will need some tough chew toys in my new home. I am house trained and know commands like “sit” and “lay down.” I participate in Doggy Play Groups at the Houston SPCA and am told I do wonderfully with the other dogs! Sadly, I have been in and out of the Houston SPCA through no fault of my own, I just haven’t found a forever family with the time to devote to me. Won’t you find it in your heart to love me? (And give me treats?!) 2 Years Old Boxer/Hound Female ID: 215173
