ummer brings bold colors and celebrations of life. Think beach towels and snow cones, strawberries and watermelons, pool parties and cookouts. Our color issue marks the beginning of summer, when life takes on that school’s-out zeal. Many of us enjoy lighter schedules (and lighter clothing) to take advantage of the summertime groove. Summer’s festive vibe encourages us to shrug off a few worries and simply enjoy the moment. Our featured home this issue is local designer Blake Woods’ vibrant home in Garden Oaks. Blake’s intense appreciation for color inspires every room and artful detail with disarming grace. His example may convert you from a neutral Nancy to a bold Beatrice. Find more color inspiration in our color trends story. In spite of the notorious heat and its constant companions, humidity and mosquitoes, we find ourselves drawn outdoors, especially in the evenings. After being isolated in airconditioned boxes, the setting sun, the Gulf breeze, the songs of the cicadas beckon us to reconnect with nature. Even in these tech-crazy times, the hope of spotting a falling star or simply listening to the croaking frogs draws us out to the back yard. The outdoors is often Dad’s domain, which brings up Father’s

Jack And Jill Rewrite

LEAVES THE PAST BEHIND, EMERGING AS A SERENE, SPAINSPIRED SETTING By JOETTA MOULDEN Photography by JANET LENZEN

After

Removing the wallpaper and painting the walls a soft spa blue did wonders for this dated bath. New cabinetry, hardware, mirror and lighting, as well as a new quartz countertop, sink and faucet updated the room. Framed antique engravings add interest and a focal point.

Before Dated wallpaper, lighting and cabinet style, lack of drawer storage and a faux marble integrated sink/vanity were spoiling this “Jack” bathroom, which also serves as a guest bath.

After 14

Before

My good friend Lynn’s circa 1970 condo had Jack and Jill bathrooms that were quite dated. As you can imagine, I see a lot of these baths (both in condos and homes). The trademarks of this era’s bathrooms are busy wallpaper, man-made marblelook integrated vanity sinks, step-back vanities and out-of-style sheet mirrors, Hollywood makeup lighting and wallpaper. So I was more than happy to help Lynn create up-to-date rooms that reflect her personality and flow smoothly with the style of her other living spaces. Since Lynn wanted more current, fresh and crisp look, we began by asking contractor Rene Rodriguez to remove the dated wallpaper. She already knew she wanted soft spa-blue walls, and from the samples she had gathered, we chose Martha Stewart’s Cake Plate Blue and creamy white trim in White Picket Fence by Valspar from Lowe’s. For a younger look that will improve resale value, do the

tip> work for future buyers by removing busy wallpaper.

A good friend had recommended Dupont TM Zodiaq quartz countertops from Lowe’s, so we selected the color Storm Grey. The dark grey looks wonderful and adds contrast between Lynn’s existing ceramic tile floor, white cabinets, new blue walls, brushed nickel hardware, mirrors from Restoration Hardware and light fixtures from The Great Indoors. To update your bath, consider a bath bar light instead of your

tip> old Hollywood makeup light, and an adjustable wall-hung mirror instead of wall-mounted sheet mirrors with plastic rosettes.

Great looking new brushed nickel pulls from Restoration Hardware are like jewelry for the restyled vanities, and match the style and finish of the towel bars, mirrors and toilet paper holders. The American Standard under-mount white porcelain sinks and Kohler brushed nickel faucets came from Home Depot. Be consistent with the finish of all doorknobs, faucet sets,

tip> hardware, mirrors and light fixtures (these are from The Great Indoors).

“I knew I wanted quality fixtures and a high-end countertops,” Lynn explained, “so most of the budget was spent on those items.” Even though there was no set budget, I tried to keep costs down by suggesting Lynn shop at Lowe’s, Home Depot and The Great Indoors (owned by Sears) for most of the brand name items, sticking with a brushed nickel finish for continuity. Lynn’s splurge was buying brushed nickel pulls, towel bars, toilet paper holders and mirrors from Restoration Hardware, which she loved. Remodels are all about balancing the splurges and bar-

tip> gains—like buying doorknobs and lighting from a chain and splurging on pulls, for example. Buying items from one style “collection” at a store is the best way to insure continuity.

Since the kitty litter pan was on the floor in the kneehole space in the “Jack” bath (also the powder room for guests) I suggested that Rene cut an opening in the side of the under sink cabinet for the cats to use the litter pan in a more private, out-of-sight location. “That idea was brilliant! Your suggestion to add two additional shelves to the closet opposite the tub made it possible to store the cleaning products that I kept underneath the sink, making room for the litter pan. I am thrilled with the result,” she added.

New open shelving above the toilet provides a place for collections and pretty objects. A new, brushed nickel towel ring coordinates with the new lighting, hardware, faucet set and shower curtain rod. Framed artwork from the same book of engravings adds continuity.

Before

The bathtub bridges the two bathrooms and behind the doors to each respective bath is a shallow closet that wasted vertical storage space. A kitty litter pan under the makeup bench was unsightly in the “Jack” bath, which also serves as a powder room.

trade secrets • Old bath cabinets can be rebuilt kitchen counter-height on the same footprint with new drawers, paint and hardware. This, plus new countertops and fixtures, updates outdated vanities. • Get Creative. An unattractive kitty litter pan can be hidden inside an under-sink cabinet if a cat-sized opening is cut in the side of the cabinet. • Sometimes the most effective strategy is not to gut your bathroom, but to first rethink the elements that are already paid for and to make them work.

More storage was added to the small baths by creating working drawers in the new job-built vanities. The problem with dated stepback vanities is a lack of storage. (There are always dummy drawers in front of the sinks, but in this case there were no drawers where Lynn needed them.) Another way storage was added was with open

tip> shelving over the blank toilet wall in the “Jill” After

bath, where pretty collections and toiletries can now be displayed.

Lynn inherited a book from her grandfather that had vintage black and white, hand-colored engravings of amphibians and creepy-crawly things that we carefully selected and I recommended she have Hobby Lobby frame the engravings in stock size black frames with acid-free, off-white mat board to preserve the art work. For continuity, the framed art continues into the master bedroom as well. Take your trim paint sample with you to the

tip> framer to select a creamy white mat that flows with rest of the rooms.

Before

There were no drawers to hold makeup and toiletries, the vanity was out of date and crowded, and the busy wallpaper and mirror needed to be updated.

After Adding two working storage drawers provided space for toiletries and makeup, while the new vanity cabinet freed up space on the new gray quartz counter for simple accessories.

“Most of my friends and family said, “It’s about time!” Lynn explained. She had not realized just how dated the baths looked until she saw my “before” photos. “The comments have been very complimentary and all say the bathrooms have a calming effect, like a spa, which is exactly what I wanted.” Joetta Moulden offers home makeovers using your own home furnishings to create the home you’ve always dreamed of. Grilling a feast that's well done doesn't have to be a rare occasion. A great grill, a few tools and some know-how can make your outdoor feasts phenomenal.

Smokin' Cookouts E X P E R T T I P S A N D T R A D E S E C R E T S T O H E L P Y O U A C H I E V E G R I L L I N G G R E AT N E S S By LEIGH BELL Dad. Outdoors. Food. Fire. Grilling recalls the beginning of civilization. It’s innate in men (and women, too). It’s all about chasing down the perfectly grilled meal – the grill of the chase. Today’s technology provides assistance from gadgets to gear to innovation. Still, in essence, grilling man (or woman) vs. nature. HOT STUFF

“The single most important thing is a good digital thermometer,” says Konrad Haskins, grand champion pitmaster out of Austin and founder of The BBQ Institute, which holds classes throughout Texas and the nation. “If you don’t know how to cook the meat, if you don’t have a target temperature, all the seasonings and all the marinades in the world are wasted.” Duane Myers, general manager of C&D Hardware and experienced griller, agrees, but he’s “old-school” using a basic thermometer. Techies may opt for thermometers with a portable receiver that sounds when the meat reaches temperature, allowing the griller to mingle in the kitchen or elsewhere up to, on average, 100 feet from the grill itself. “It’s like going to a restaurant and being paged for your table,” Myers says. Remote-transmitter thermometers range in price of about $40 to $80 or more for those with dual thermometers.

BETTER BARBECUE CHOOSE YOUR WEAPON

Charcoal and gas grills continue to offer time-saving conveniences for outdoor chefs. This Weber Performer Grill ignites charcoal at the touch of a button, no lighter fluid required. Photo courtesy of Sur la Table.

Grab a spatula in one hand, tongs in the other. Buy good ones once, and never worry about it again. Go with stainless steel and go heavy duty. Haskins suggests shopping at a restaurant supply house. “Those are usually cheaper and much better quality than fancy ones you buy in a retail store,” he says. But sometimes a spatula just doesn’t cut it. We’ve heard the rumor that meat shouldn’t be pierced while grilling. It’s just that: a rumor. The Backyard Warrior’s Fork It Over ($13) lightly grabs the meat by its edge, flips it over and easily comes out. Silicon is the innovation of the moment with baking, but it rocks barbecue, too. Try a silicon basting brush to load up the meat with your marinade. Grill Friends makes an angled silicone brush for about $10. It’s heat resistant up to 500 degrees and dishwasher safe. Check out their silicone forks, too. Dads, show your softer side and master the grilling of fruits and veggies. The calorie-conscious and vegetarians in your life will be thankful, but you’ll also impress the carnivores. For containment on the grate, get a good grill wok for about $30. This keeps the veggies from falling and right over the heat, giving them a great smoky flavor – try rosemary onions or ginger carrots. The wok also works well for shrimp, scallops and stir-fries without a lot of oil. “If you’re not cooking vegetables and fruit on the grill, you’re missing out on a whole lot of fun,” Haskins says. He has a little secret up his sleeve called 3BC: butter, brown sugar, bourbon and cinnamon. It turns any grilled fruit into gourmet but works especially well with freshly grilled peaches or pineapples. Voila! Dessert. If you’re worried about a sticky grill, use a pan. Recipes, technique, rubs, marinades, spices. These accessories are overwhelming. If you’re into cookbooks, check out How to Grill by Steven

BETTER BARBECUE Raichlen or support local author Robb Walsh and buy his book Legends of Texas Barbecue Cookbook: Recipes and Recollections from the Pit Bosses on Amazon. If you prefer recipes on your handheld, visit Haskins online recipe fave: www.virtualweberbullet.com. Not as sexy, but also essential, are necessities to keep your grill and nearby surfaces tidy. The Grill Daddy cleaning device reduces that annoying “scrape, scrape, scrape.” About $20, Grill Daddy’s handle holds water that streams out while its stainless-steel brushes clean grime off a heated grill. “It’s almost like steam-cleaning for your grill,” Myers says. BIG GRILLS DON ’ T CRY

If you’re gonna grill, we mean really grill, get ready to invest in a grill. And we mean a grill. At Texas Pit Crafters in Pinehurst, where grills come with a lifetime warranty, owner Mike Logan says he rarely ever sells people their first grill. Most already dropped a few hundred on a grill that fell apart in a year or two. But it’s not cheap. The base model is $1,400 and goes up from there. “You can buy a grill for about $400, and you’ll buy a couple of those grills,” Logan says. “Our grills will still be chugging at the end of the day, so in the long run, you’re not saving that much.” Duane Myers, general manager at C&D Hardware, is in love. He’s won over by the Traeger grill, in which electricity heats wood pellets rather to perform like a normal outdoor grill. On the market only a couple of years, the Traeger cooks with very hot smoke – not flame – so it’s hard to burn anything. Reputation saved. Handy grill woks allow you to grill shrimp, sliced vegetables, mushrooms and other tasty morsels without anything dropping through the grill grate. Photo courtesy of Sur la Table.

Ready or Not, It’s Coming! 2 0 1 0 H U R R I C A N E S E A S O N S TA RT S J U N E 1 – A R E Y O U P R E PA R E D ? Hurricane Season is approaching, and while we scurry to assemble our preparedness supplies, many of us may forget to check one very important item off our checklists: flood insurance.

during a 30-year period of time – the duration of many home mortgages – a home in a 100-year floodplain has a minimum of a 26 percent chance of flooding, and a home in the 500-year floodplain has a minimum of a 6 percent chance of flooding. The closer your home is to a bayou or a stream, the greater your chances of flooding. BEYOND THE BAYOUS

All homeowners need to protect their real estate investments with flood insurance no matter where they live – even if they are outside a mapped floodplain. Flood Insurance Rate Maps, also called “floodplain maps,” are good indicators of certain flooding risks, but they do not show all flooding risks for our area. For example, about 70 percent of the 2,300 homes that flooded in west Harris County in April 2009 were not in a mapped floodplain. Nearly 65 percent of the area that flooded during Tropical Storm Allison in 2001 was not in mapped floodplain. Floodplain maps, which are produced by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help determine flood insurance rates, show flooding risks from bayous and streams topping their banks during certain theoretical floods, namely the 100-year and 500-year floods, and from coastal flooding. A 100-year flood has a minimum of a 1 percent chance of occurring every year, and a 500-year flood has a minimum of a .2 percent chance of occurring every year. To put that into perspective,

28

There are flooding risks that are not indicated on floodplain maps. The maps do not show flooding risks from street flooding caused by roadside ditches and storm sewers exceeding their capacity, or from “sheet flow,” which is water traveling over our flat terrain to reach the bayous. Unfortunately, half or more of the flooding that occurs in Harris County falls into these categories. The maps also do not show flooding risks from extreme flooding events, such as Allison. While the Harris County Flood Control District works year-round to widen bayous and excavate stormwater detention basins to reduce flooding risks, homeowners are advised to do their part and protect their property with flood insurance, as flooding is the No. 1 natural threat to this area. While flood insurance won’t keep your home from flooding, it can help you recover from costly damages. To get more information on flooding and flood insurance, visit the National Flood Insurance Program on-line at www.floodsmart.gov or the Harris County Flood Control District at www.hcfcd.org.

INSPIRED BY

COLOR A local designer’s home celebrates his love of color, art and nature, with accents from both his travels and his Texas roots. BY SANDRA COOK PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIRO DVORSCAK

35

Houston native Blake Woods, ASID, a principle at Manchee Woods Design and co-owner of Modern Worth boutique, was drawn to the 1947 Garden Oaks home he purchased from the original owner in 1997. The 1100-square foot home was essentially in its original condition at the time, although gold shag carpet was a glaring 1970s memento. “I walked in and I just immediately had a good feeling about the house. I felt fortunate that it was in the original condition, so I didn’t have to correct any bad renovations,” says homeowner Blake Woods. A friend dubbed the house Cricketwood years ago “and it just stuck,” says Blake. Inspired by summers spent in and around Cape Cod, the home exudes an undeniably coastal chorus that serenades guests with vibrant colors, striking and substantial furnishings a delightfully eclectic assortment of artwork. ALIVE WITH COLOR

The living room walls are painted Sherwin Williams’ Onionskin. “It’s an interesting color in that it has moods,” says Blake. “I love this color.” Blake explains the wall color shifts with the changing natural light throughout day, ranging from pale green to neutral to yellow. Morning, noon and night the golden-grassy wall color is at once vibrant and soothing. The walls lend Zen-like harmony the home feature Blake’s numerous artful collections. Dramatic paintings, poignant photographs and whimsical collage creations are all part of Blake’s rotating collections of entertainment for the eye. Many of the pieces are by friends who are artists and photographers, or are momentos from his travels. “I love color. I could never live in an all-white house,” says Blake, who clearly has an eye for the beautiful and unusual. “Having an art background, I’ve always been a collector. I’ve devised a storage system in my garage so I can rotate things in and out.” Blake also collects lamps of various vintages, shapes and sizes. He especially loves ’50s style lamps. “People always ask me, ‘How many lamps can you put in one room?’” laughs Blake. “But I use them like candlesticks.”

R I G H T : The living room and dining room walls are painted Sherwin Williams’ Onionskin, a color that ranges from yellow to green as natural light changes throughout the day. The plush Lee Jofa sofa in Bean green contrasts nicely with the Zographos cocktail table. Blake placed the Hollywood-inspired bar service atop the desk to encourage dinner party guests to congregate outside of the small kitchen. P R E V I O U S PA G E : The once-drab back yard now features several vignettes with colorful and interesting objects that draw the eye from inside to extend sense of space. The large ceramic tables (in orange and aqua) are available at Modern Worth.

37

GATHERING SPACE

Having worked in top commercial design firms for more than 20 years, Blake is drawn to the clean lines made famous by Bauhaus and Mies van der Rohe, however he also treasures the homey shapes and textures of his Texas upbringing. “I call it Crunchy Contemporary,” says Blake. In the dining room, his circa 1900 Texas pine table, with its atypical round top, is surrounded by elegant hand-carved Ward Bennet Chairs. Above, a simple, yet elegant, light fixture illuminates the rustic table. The generous, distressed-finished buffet, a reproduction piece by Wooten antiques (an Austin wholesaler), provides handy storage for Blake’s assortment of dishes, glassware and service pieces used for dinner parties and get-togethers, which often spill out onto the deck and serene back yard. The small, but cleverly designed kitchen still boasts all of its original cabinets, although the harvest gold appliances have moved on. Blake’s goal was to have all the cabinets look like furniture, so the existing cabinets were sophisticated with trims and

moldings and then dressed up by decorative painter Kevin Davis. A large storage piece was built by a furniture maker with glass inserts from Joel Berman Studios and fitted with turquoise tile for a vintage look. The chandelier now hanging in the kitchen had belonged to Blake’s mother and hung at his childhood home. It had been brass, but Blake updated it by painting it dark red and adding glass-beaded shades. MULTITASKING IN TECHNICOLOR

Blake’s den/study also functions as a guest room. In this room, a pair of existing closets provided the perfect spot to build in a desk and bookshelves. The deep blue wall color is Valspar’s Navy 6. “This is the darkest color I’ve ever used and I freaked out for about a week,” admits Blake. “It’s in the bedroom, too, and I wouldn’t even put the rooms back together until I got used to it.” The coffee table is actually an old cotton bale cart with chunky refurbished wheels (reproductions available at Restoration Hardware). The sturdy table can easily be rolled away to accom-

modate guests on the camel-colored sofa bed. A vintage rattan chair was an estate sale find and resembles Heywood-Wakefield’s rattan pieces from the ’50s. Blake recovered the cushions with fabric by Ashley Hicks for David Hicks (the ottoman is in the master bedroom). More of Blake’s art collection adorns the walls with bold graphics, while black and white toile drapes and bamboo shades give a nod nature. Multiple punches of orange strike lively notes throughout the room.

tom linen shades. The bedroom also hosts his collection of old clocks. Blake’s fondness for clocks is tied to a memory of his father buying little Big Ben clocks, and dubbed them “opportunity clocks,” instead of alarm clocks, to encourage the teenagers to get out of bed in the morning. These days, Blake wakes up to views of his peaceful backyard paradise.

GOING COASTAL

The walls of the master bedroom are the same deep navy blue as the den, which gives the sense that the two rooms are part of the same suite. Double-decker ’50s side tables flank the bed, which is dressed in an assortment of blues and neutrals. Blake designed a pair of lamps, which help evoke a beachy, Cape Cod look that he loves. The lamps are comprised of blue and white koi vases from a vendor at his Modern Worth boutique, topped with cus-

B E L O W : The dining room exhibits Blake’s mix of contemporary style and Texas traditions. The antique pine table and the rustic painted sideboard are paired with the modern light fixture and high-style Ward Bennet Chairs. Blake installed French doors, which help connect the interior and exterior spaces. O P P O S I T E : Blake dressed up all the original kitchen cabinets by adding crown molding and trim in a diamond pattern. Decorative painter Kevin Davis used Sherwin Williams’ Glider Green and Pratt & Lambert’s Clay to help achieve Blake’s vision of making the cabinets look like furniture pieces.

39

L E F T : The deep blue walls of the study/guest room allow more of Blake’s collections to shine, while the neutral tones of the rug and Kravet sofa keep the room grounded. The large yellow and green painting is by Dallas artist and interior designer Russ Peters, an old friend of Blake’s from design school at University of North Texas. The framed black and white prints are actually old quirky Christmas cards from friend Julie Klump, an architect who also pursues photography. The two of blue and white paintings are by artist Larry Graber.

42

O P P O S I T E : The living room is filled with unique lamps and artwork, including black and white photography by Shelia Cloudt of girl + CAMERA, a collage called Purple Cow by Hickson Wright, and Bill Fink’s quirky sculptures made from found objects (sold at Modern Worth). The large painting above the sofa is by Nicholas Bakaysa. The desk was Blake’s childhood desk, now painted blue with re-plated hardware.

A B O V E : The walls of small rooms can seem to recede when painted a deep hue. Blake chose Valspar’s Navy 6 for his bedroom and the study/guest room, providing a vivid backdrop for his art collection. He also painted all of the interior doors a muted teal and fitted them with new hardware. Layers of blues and neutrals in the bedroom suggest seaside serenity.

43

R I G H T : Donghia’s Milo chair is dressed in a brown-and-white seersucker called Gatsby. The chair provides a slim, yet comfortable, spot to relax, as demonstrated by the charming Cheeto. Another ’50s-inspired lamp sits atop glass nesting tables, also by Donghia.

A B O V E : Blake's knack for display is evident throughout the house. He often uses glass and metal objects to reflect and disperse light in small spaces and admits he is drawn to the color blue. He likes to rotate his displays and has developed a storage system to keep items organized.

2010 COLOR DÉCOR TRENDS INFLUENCED BY LIFE'S RICHNESS Without a doubt, self-expression reflects mood. Last year’s economic challenges have channeled design trends into a more meditative mode. Notice holistic, spiritual and simplistic elements that represent the richness of life that abounds in nature, relationships and spirituality.

50

“This year's color trends are rooted in that richness,” says Dutch Boy Color Marketing and Design Manager Donna Schroeder. "Colors that provide hope and affirmation that the greater economic market will continue to improve are at the forefront of decor for 2010," Schroeder says." People are much more introspective about color this year and will be painting in a way that not only is aesthetically pleasing, but also 'saturates the senses' and is reflective of a society eager to reconnect with education, nature, spirituality and world culture."

COLORING YOUR WORLD According to Schroeder, Dutch Boy's 2010 design trends have been categorized into four different "personalities." These "personality" palettes are composed of colors that embody a homeowner's personal style and taste. Each of the trend personalities, along with images of the paint colors, can be found at www.DutchBoy.com. PURIST

This trend reflects the elements of nature: colors of branches, grasses and dark earth underneath the feet. The purist palette is a soothing relief, a retreat from the hectic. It's terra firma brought indoors. Purists are concerned about their impact on the world and care deeply about finding balance. Purist colors are natural shades of herbal teas, the stones in the river as the water rushes over them, and the yellow-green of buds as they push up through the springtime earth. Colors in the Purist palette include: Urban Nature, Naturalist Stone, Lemon Balm, Gingered Root, Catalyst Steel, Natural Canvas, Repurposed and Budding Fern.

Soothing colors, such as Dutch Boy's Urban Nature from its Purist palette, provide a calming tone for busy rooms like this farmhouse kitchen. Photo courtesy of Pittsburgh Paints.

COLORING YOUR WORLD SEEKER

Seeker goes beyond the ordinary to showcase shades brought forth by history and architecture. Rich, complex hues give this color personality rooms that have a carefully curated, beautifully symbolic touch. What matters to a Seeker is creating meaning, spirituality and beauty in life. Colorful objects made of precise details, hexagonal tiles to stylize, and architectural furniture are quintessential to the Seeker. Colors in the Seeker palette include: Antique Rosewood, Medieval Cloverleaf, Olde Stone, Soul-Quenching, Alabaster Frame, Kimono Red, Crossing Midnight and Cathedral Gray. MUSE

Muse is a palette that's all about feeling and experiencing. These are colors that swaddle and soothe the soul. It's a color style that reflects the need for sanctuary. Attention to design detail and just the right sensory colors bring Muse to life. This palette is infused with, and inspires, rich details, fine fabrics and soft twilight shades of blush pinks, rosy peach and lilac.

Intense hues, such as Nightingale's Song from Dutch Boy's Muse palette lends an exotic vibe to this outdoor room. Photo courtesy of Krylon.

COLORING YOUR WORLD Colors in the Muse palette include: Quiet Drizzle, Aroma Garden, Melodious Peach, Silken Raspberry, Blossomed Lilac, Composed Bloom, Nightingale's Song and Meadow Pear. STORYTELLER

The Storyteller collection shows off color that reflects a life well lived through traveling and varied interests. Furniture and colors from afar add a vibrant touch to the home and bring life to tales from foreign lands. Everything a Storyteller sees in her travels inspires her home design and color choices. The Storyteller is an experiential explorer. Colors in the Storyteller palette include: Grecian Sea, Edge of Time, Narrative Cream, Clementine Tart, Journey's End, Treaded Grapes, Wide Open Sky and Spanish Door. Though these four trend personalities will certainly be prolific this year, many people will combine the four palettes and blend them all into distinctive personalities. COLORING YOUR WORLD Boy has collected a "Blend" palette. What colors are in this palette? All of them. Blend is exciting, eclectic and adventurous. Blend is, appropriately, a blending combination of two or more of the previous four trends. A person with a Blend personality has a home that is a reflection of the owner's many moods and styles. An airy, light-filled room might be held to earth by chunky furniture or given flight with watercolor prints. Blend personalities could have a Muse kitchen, Storyteller family room, and a combined Purist and Seeker dining room. Coexistence is at the heart of the Blend personality. Courtesy of ARAcontent

Quiet Drizzle on the walls and Blossomed Lilac on the ceiling from Dutch Boy's Muse palette add to this bath's relaxing atmosphere. Photo courtesy of Benjamin Moore.

HELLO DAHHHLING, PLEASED TO MEET YOU. MY NAME IS RUBY. And yes, I am a precious gem. At 5 years old, I discovered I had a knack for the finer things in life, so I set out on my own to follow my dreams of becoming Cynthia Rowley’s design assistant.
