ur cover feature developed after Architect Charles Todd Helton contacted me about a remarkable home he had designed for a couple on a very desirable block near Memorial Park and Bayou Bend. Little did he know that I had already toured this home during the 2011 Modern Home Tour. The architecture made quite an impression on me, even after viewing several other homes on the tour that day. In addition to the architecture tour, the home was also featured on 2011’s ASID Kitchen & Bath Tour for the extraordinary kitchen, master bath and multiple guest baths. I was delighted to hear from owners Greg Leblanc and Mike Cox, as well as the architect, that a major inspiration for the look of the home was the dramatic glass and stone house featured at the end of the 1959 Alfred Hitchcock thriller, North by Northwest. There are several blogs on houses from the movies – I encourage you to search online to see images and read about this fascinating and fictitious structure known as the Vandamm House. If Jerry B. The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston opens its exhibition Duncan Phyfe: Master Cabinetmaker in New York on June 24. The exhibit is the first retrospective on Phyfe in 90 years and spotlights this artistic and influential master craftsman for the current generation. The full span of his long and distinguished career will be featured, including examples of his best-known furniture from the period 1805–20, which was influenced heavily by early English Regency design; his more opulent, monumental and archaeologically correct Grecian style of the late 1810s and 1820s, sometimes referred to as American Empire; and his sleek, minimalist late work of the 1830s and 1840s, known as the Grecian Plain style, based largely on French Restauration furniture design. Co-organized by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the exhibition brings together nearly 100 works from private and public collections throughout the United States. Highlights of the exhibition include some never-beforeseen documented masterpieces and furniture that has descended directly in the Phyfe family, as well as the master cabinetmaker’s own chest of woodworking tools. Category 1 hurricane has sustained winds over 74 mph, while a tropical storm may only have sustained winds up to 73 mph, they can have sporadic wind gusts that are much stronger. Upgrading to high wind-resistant windows is a smart move and can protect your home from such weather extremes, as well as improve your home’s energy efficiency. Look for windows made with energy-efficient, impact-resistant glass. The best choices are those with performance ratings that meet or exceed local code requirements. If installing new windows isn’t an option, there are window-shielding products that can provide a temporary, but tough barrier for windows. The severe storms of recent decades have resulted in innovations for window protection, such as incredibly strong, yet flexible window mesh, known as hurricane fabric. “Our hurricane fabric products are designed to prevent catastrophic failure of your home during a hurricane,” says Richard Paulson of A Touch of Class, an Authorized Dealer/Installer of AstroGuard and AstroFlex. “In a hurricane, your home acts like an airplane wing, the wind hits your home and goes up over it thus creating low pressure or lift above it. If a window or door is compromised, the high pressure rushes in and can take your roof with it, causing catastrophic failure.” Hurricane fabric is a proven alternative to boarding up windows can be very cost effective at approximately $8 to $10 per square foot installed, according to Paulson. He says that after initial installation, hurricane fabric can be re-deployed by anyone who can use a screwdriver. “Both AstroFlex and AstroGuard block 97 percent of wind and rain and are rated to withstand a category 5 hurricane. These products come with storage bags or can be folded and stored on a shelf. They are lightweight and weigh only 11 ounces per square yard.” It’s worth noting that AstroGuard is approved by the Texas and Florida Department of Insurance. Some insurance companies offer a discount for having it. 20

Since they were selling their home, the couple wanted to get my staging ideas. They wanted to keep their basic kitchen/breakfast room layout to keep the budget in check, but they were ready to replace windows, as well as update appliances, flooring, hardware, walls and countertops. They wanted to keep the existing backsplash tile, cabinets, replace the floor tile and paint the walls. We selected finishes that would blend with their pale grey and terra cotta color scheme and make little changes—to not only bring the room into this decade, but also add to the kitchen’s comfort and livability. We must have done something right because the home sold in two days. (Did you know that a staged home sells on average 50 percent faster and sells for 7-10 percent over list price?)

AFTER: Selecting a large format matte tile that complemented the nearby existing tile backsplash and laying it on the diagonal, was crucial to the design. New Ikea chairs work with the existing table. The new window fitted with a woven wood shade, new granite countertop, simplified artwork and the de-cluttered bar counter helped, too. BEFORE: The old breakfast room was cluttered, lacked color, sported an old window and lacked an updated window treatment. The tile floor was tired and its tiny pattern meant cleaning lots of crevices.

TIP: What is the first thing you change when you buy a home? The wallpaper! So go ahead and do the work for the buyer—remove that paper and paint the walls. “We just had to get over our sentimental attachment to our dated wallpaper,” Tory explained. “It was really hard to say goodbye to it, since we had searched and searched for a paper we liked. Painting the kitchen the same color as the living room and den (C2 Paints “Polenta”) made the rooms flow nicely, while the red dining room and entry (C2 Paints “Turkish Market”) now compliment the nearby yellow walls. “We love how the colors flow between the rooms and have not missed the wallpaper one bit,” she exclaimed. “I especially love your suggestion of painting the back wall of our breakfast room’s glass-fronted cabinet in the same C2 Paints “Turkish Market” as the dining room,” she added. I also suggested installing hooks by the new half-glass back door and hiding the water heater to the left of the washer with a ventilated screen. I suggested they move the vintage starburst clock to the opposite wall and change out one of the breakfast room pictures they cut from an old grocer’s catalog. “The new one (mangoes) is a much better choice and it is something I would never have thought of,” she said. Tory knows the benefits of de-cluttering and staging. “I am a firm believer in the power of your environment,” she explained. “It affects your efficiency and your outlook. Collaboration between architect and clients results in a Modern home inspired by the finale of Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest
G
reg LeBlanc and Mike Cox had lived in their older home near Memorial Park for several years when they decided they
wanted start from scratch on the same lot. The lot, you see, wasn’t just your average Houston neighborhood parcel. Their lot is a marvelously sloped triangle that backs up to the Hogg Bird Sanctuary and Bayou Bend near Memorial Park. The pair knew they wanted to find creative architect who was open to a collaborative design process. After asking around for recommendations, they contacted Charles Todd Helton, AIA. Greg and Mike found an instant connection with the young architect. “From the first meeting at the old house, I loved the energy these guys brought to the process,” says Charles Todd Helton. “Charles came over and we thought it might be a 30-minute meeting, but it ended up being about three hours,” says Greg LeBlanc. “We talked about modern architecture, Frank Lloyd Wright’s design principles, Fallingwater and how

The LeBlanc-Cox home, completed in 2010, was inspired by the home featured at the end of the 1959 Alfred Hitchcock thriller, North by Northwest. Expanses of windows take advantage of views of the adjacent Hogg Bird Sanctuary and Bayou Bend. The home features four bedrooms in the main house (with an upstairs and downstairs master) as well as a separate casita with similar design to the main home at the rear of the property. 33
Architect Charles Todd Helton collaborated with Greg LeBlanc and Mike Cox to design a Modern home that recalled Frank Lloyd Wright’s work. Helton achieved this by incorporating walls of stacked stone and generous windows contrasted by horizontal forms, such as balconies and overhangs.
much we loved that sense of contemporary but not cold, that lodge—but not overly lodge—feel.” “We told him we really liked the house at the end of the movie North by Northwest,” says Mike Cox. Hollywood legend has it Frank Lloyd Wright was approached to design the dramatic house used in the final scenes of the 1959 Alfred Hitchcock thriller, but architect and the movie production company never reached an agreement. Instead, Hitchcock had set designers create a house that looked like Wright might have designed it. DESIGN ORIGIN “I have to say given the lush, natural surroundings and the remarkable topography, this lot is the most interesting site I’ve ever designed for,” says Helton. With Frank Lloyd Wright and the iconic North by
Northwest house as starting points, Mike and Greg told Helton they wanted exposed beams and warm colors to help avoid a “please don’t touch” or museum feel in their home. The pair also discussed with Helton how to incorporate free-flowing spaces that would work well for large gatherings.

To accommodate festive occasions, the social areas of Greg and Mike’s home feature generously sized rooms with plenty of wide-open flow from one space to another. 35
ABOVE & RIGHT: When Greg and Mike first saw the aqua glow of the Thinkglass countertop, they knew they wanted to install it on their bar. The aqua-upholstered banquette provides a dining nook with fifties flair. The spot is a hit with visiting nieces and nephews, as well as casual dinner gatherings. The see-through fireplace turns up the ambiance in both the kitchen and entry.
Greg had collected stacks of photos from magazines and design books, which he and Mike sorted through and culled to help define the design notes they gave to Helton. “That was huge,” says Helton, who was thrilled to receive such an abundance of input from his clients. Mike and Greg were impressed with Helton’s openminded approach and flexible, client-focused attitude. “Other architects seemed to force their methodology on you, but Charles’s approach was more clientservice oriented,” says Mike. Mike’s business travels kept him out of the country quite frequently, but he left Greg and Helton with three major requests: that the garage not be frontand-center, that there be a hot tub on the upstairs balcony, and that the master bath be equipped with a steam room. The rest he left up to his partner and the architect. The design collaboration resulted in a spacious home with four bathrooms and four and a half baths, including the casita near the pool. The two-story home features high ceilings and large windows fac-

ing to the south, where the property backs up to the Hogg Bird Sanctuary and Bayou Bend. The spathemed master bath includes the requisite steam room and enough space to bring in a massage table. LAYERS OF DESIGN After construction was well underway, the homeowners decided they needed some assistance pulling together all the materials and finishes they had selected. “We had made all of our decisions based on what we liked and what we wanted in the house, but we just didn’t know how to fit it all together,” says Greg. Greg and Mike hired Jane Page Design Group to help get their interiors to the finish line, and according to the homeowners, Laura Litton of Jane Page Design Group stepped into the well-advanced project with ease. “I would never do another house without a designer,” says Mike. “And in hindsight, we would have hired and interior designer sooner.” Paul Ryan of Texas Pools was tapped to design and build the tiered poolscape for the sloped lot,

complete with elevated hot tub, three waterfalls, and accent lighting. Tim Turner of Windswept Landscape Studios created the lush, yet unfussy, landscape on the dramatically shaped lot. Turner’s well-composed plantings and pathways complement the style of the home with a layered and verdant environment. ARCHITECT-CLIENT BOND “We worked successfully with Charles, because he was willing to listen to us and heard our ideas, but at the same time we were eager to get his own thoughts from an architect’s perspective,” says Greg. “The entire process evolves continuously while planning and discussing design principles and philosophies while the architect focuses his attention and incorporates the client's ideas and expectations into the design.”

Wide plank French oak brings warmth to floors of the upstairs master bedroom and landing. The master bedroom also includes a full balcony, complete with Mike’s requested hot tub. The luxe floor-to-ceiling window coverings are from G&S Draperies. 41
Greg went all out searching for interesting and unusual bathroom tile. After amassing a multitude of samples, Greg and Mike hired Jane Page Design Group to help them unify the look of each room. Bubble-themed tiles from Artistic Tile in New York lend a playful style to a guest bath. Concave bamboo wall tiles were found at Ann Sacks and a coordinating bamboo etched glass shower enclosure is from Dauphin Sales. The powder room features red glass tiles from Ann Sacks and an LED back-lit mirror from Dauphin Sales.

For the spa-inspired master bath, wrap-around vanities, designed with a continuous stone countertop, create a natural flow. A steam room connects the bath to nature by opening onto a balcony. Wavy Ambra tile was installed in and around the two showers, including the steam shower. Various gray tones of flooring, countertops, and walls are offset by the warm glow from mother-of-pearl shell mirror frames.

Views of the back of the home from the pool are the most reminiscent of Wright’s Fallingwater and the North by Northwest home. From here, the sweeping height of the roofline and the waterfalls’ downward motion comprise a delightful yin and yang, while the horizontal lines of the balconies, railings and roof overhang provide a soothing balance. 45

project Cunningham recommends grills that have solid cast stainless steel burners, use 304 series stainless steel components that carry a lifetime warranty from a company that has been in business at least 20+ years. Some projects can be completed in just 2-3 days, while more elaborate ones can take weeks, although that’s rare,” says Cunningham. “You can even purchase some outdoor kitchen packages in a box with a 7-foot outdoor kitchen cabinet, refrigerator, stainless steel grill and stainless steel door all for just $2999 and be cooking on it tonight!” Logan says Texas Pit Crafters’ custom projects generally take 7-10 days to finalize the plan and project scope. “Once construction starts it will take 3-14 days depending on the complexity,” says Logan. “This does not include manufacturing lead time for grills and storage which can be 4-8 weeks depending on the time of year.” Pricing stars around $3,000 to $4,000 and when a multitude of features and fixtures are incorporated into the outdoor kitchen, the price tag can be ten times that. “An outdoor kitchen can range from a simple grilling island for $4,000 to a full outdoor kitchen with all the bells and whistles for $50,000+,” says Logan.
