I’m talking about my return to the magazine. I worked here some 10 years ago under the leadership of the late great Linda Barth, whose enthusiasm for interior design showed through in every issue. Then came the talented Sandra Cook who recently left to travel and explore new professional territory. I’m thrilled to follow their leads, especially during a time of such renewal for our wonderful city. Home sales are high, job creations appear strong, and the arts & entertainment scene is vibrant . . . what an exciting time to be living and working here. Here at the magazine, we also are embracing a brand new day by welcoming in two new department features. Our first addition to note is TASTEMAKER, designed to spotlight area artisans, craftsmen and style makers. The purpose is to introduce those people who truly standout in their fields. This month, powder rooms make some powerfully big design statements, thanks to Leslie Sinclair, owner of Segreto Finishes. She began her business, which now employs 35 people, in the hallways of her own home. You surely don’t want to flip past her work! We’ve also created EDITOR’S PICKS – a page or more filled with selected cool finds from online and local vendors. Items that say “take me home.” This month, we’ve devoted our new Editor’s Picks to suggesting possible fun gift ideas for dads. Father’s Day is June 16. You might want to check out our Calendar for a few special events scheduled for that day. Enjoy! Of course, we will continue to share Mercer Arboretum’s Darrin Duling’s informative gardening advice and knowledge, in addition to the inspirational Before & After work of Joetta Moulden. This month’s feature is an exciting one for us to publish. In case you missed it, we’re giving you a glimpse inside the ASID show house in Sugar Land. The architectural and design details are striking. I would enjoy hearing from you. Tell me about your own homes and if you have a tip to share with others, please send it my way. My email is sfox@houseandhomeonline.com. My best, Susan Fox

TASTEMAKER
LESLIE SINCLAIR
If artist and businesswoman extraordinaire Leslie Sinclair actually had one of those “old-fashioned” Rolodexes sitting on her desk, it would contain a virtual who’s who of Houston clients—from designers, homeowners, builders and architects. The owner of Segreto Finishes, unintentionally began her business in the hallways of her own Memorial home. Soon her past time attracted mass attention and blossomed into a business that now employs approximately 35 people. The work of Segreto Finishes, a decorative painting and fine finishes company, is often highlighted in Sinclairs’ blog: www. segretosecrets.squarespace.com.
Terracotta hues and a rich, golden metallic stenciled in a baroque Damask pattern transform this powder room into one of glamour. The ceilings are encrusted with gold leaf and aged with an umber glaze. We added gold highlights to the finished cabinet to impart a bit of elegance. (photo by Wade Blissard)

Powder Room Dreams an interview with Leslie
You can really have fun with smaller spaces, since the size generally keeps expenses down. Using painting techniques is easier to replace than wallpaper, plus there are no odd seams to deal with in those out-of-theway spaces usually found in half baths. Think of the of the powder room as being the jewel box of the home.
What are the decorative trends for powder baths? There’s a trend leaning toward cleaner and crisper looks. We’re doing a lot of stenciling for wallpaper effects. Graphic stencils are becoming very popular as well as the quiet sophistication of plaster, which can read Old World or contemporary.
How dramatic can you go in a small full or half bath? Very Dramatic . . . go all out. Murals can enlarge a space, and patterns on the walls or on the cabinets can make a big impact. I typically make the decision of what finish—whether it’s plaster, murals or stenciling—

would make the most impact by looking at what is going in the room. If the sink, mirror and floors are very dramatic, it’s usually better to go with a simple finish. If there isn’t a “special element” in the room, then the walls need to evoke a stronger statement. If you were to suggest doing one thing to a small bath or powder room, what would it be? Focus on your cabinets. Put your money into making them feel like fine pieces of furniture. And put on a quality furniture finish. You do not want to overpower the other elements—such as the sink or mirror—in the room. What is the most elaborate powder room you’ve ever done? We did a mural inspired by a 16th century Fresco painted at Torre di Bellosguardo, a former hunting lodge outside of Florence.
The silvery blue plastered walls are layered with wax to give this bathroom porcelain depth. This treatment provides a beautiful backdrop, highlighting the restored antique French stone remnant on the vanity and the mother of pearl wall covering accents (Stark) on the ceiling and the back of the cabinets. Betty Richter Arnold, designer. (photo by Wade Blissard)
Reminiscent of centuries-old walls in aged European manors, this stencil, applied over a textured Sheetrock mud, suggests a worn look by allowing unevenness in its application. Cindy Witmer, designer, and Architectural Consultant Sarah West. (photo by Wade Blissard)
What has been the simplest? Those with a pretty glazed cabinet or a plastered wall. In one bath, we plastered the walls and finished the cabinetry to look like old stone highlighting the beautiful old basin and mirror.
Getting Personal What do you collect, or what can you not get enough of? I love looking at homes, and good food and wine . . . love shopping with my girls—and Pinterest. What or who inspires you? I am inspired by so many things: Fabrics and surfaces that designers bring in, special pieces in rooms . . . and nature—especially the way the day’s light plays off of simple finds like leaves, grasses, flowers. What's your favorite go-to place(s) for decorative items? Joyce Horn Antiques, Boxwood, junk shops, IKEA, and, of course, my own store, Segreto Boutique.
What decorating books do you like? Celery Kimble’s books, “The Houses of Veranda,” and all sorts of books on Europe. You’ve written a book, “Segreto: Secrets to Finishing Beautiful Interiors,” which has been released to rave reviews . . . . where is it being sold? On Amazon, my own Web site (www.segretofinishes.com) and at Briargrove Pharmacy & Gifts, Berings Hardware, Brazos Bookstore, River Oaks Bookstore, and others listed on my site. —SF 18

This vanity’s mural was inspired by a Fresco painted in the year 1500 in France. (photo by David Schilling)
When a bath has asymmetrical angles and vaulted ceilings, it is best to choose a finish that will wrap the walls and ceilings. This bath has a textured plaster that enhances the architecture without a focus on its angles. The vanity’s furniture-quality finish applied gives the space charm and character, complementary to the mirror and sconces. (photo by Wade Blissard)
Sinclair likes the pretty glazed cabinet in this half bath. She says it was not a complicated project but one that conveyed elegance. Eleanor Cummings, designer (photo by Wade Blissard)

KITCHEN REDO
Repositioned island creates improved form and function BY JOETTA MOULDEN • PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANET LENZEN
22
Ellen and her husband, Terry Phillips, called me at the suggestion of a friend and neighbor who is a custom homebuilder. She said her friend shared my “style” with her and “after checking out your Web site, I got a good feel for what to expect. The old kitchen was just too white and when the appliances began to die, I knew this was my chance to redo the kitchen!” she explained.

BEFORE creativeblinds.com AFTER: Since the wood floors extended underneath the island, it was a no-brainer to rebuild the island on one level, parallel to the sink, with pull-out drawers for recycling, pots and pans and other necessary kitchen items. The old cooktop did not fit its space. A stainless Frigidaire Professional Series side-by-side, full-size freezer and refrigerator replaced the 28-year-old white Sub Zero unit. BEFORE: The odd-shaped island with its black granite tiles looked dated and did not function as well as it could have for today’s lifestyles. The old white Sub Zero was on its last legs. The old cooktop moved around in a too-large of an opening.

BEFORE
AFTER: The deeper sink sports a new bridge faucet and separate sprayer. A new subway tile backsplash adds texture and functional style to the new granite countertop. Xena the cat, enjoys her spot underneath the new island. BEFORE: The once shallow sink and single lever faucet was replaced with a new bridge faucet.
24
Ellen really appreciated the way I walked through, measured the kitchen and quickly came up with a workable plan. “It took Terry a while to embrace your ideas but he ‘got them’ in no time. He got his nearby butler’s pantry wine chillers (not shown), so he was happy. I liked your practical and functional plan right way and the overall concept. It was just what I wanted.” The contractor, Calloway Custom Builders, lives behind the couple and knows the house well. Wood floors run underneath the rebuilt island, which prompted the decision to rebuild the old odd-shaped island acceptable to Terry, as he had been worried about stripping in wood flooring that possibly would not match the existing stain. In addition to recycling drawers placed onto the front side of the island, the contractor added drawers for dishtowels, cookbooks and a mixer in the side cubbies of the island, located on the part that faces the dishwasher. The new backsplash subway tile is St. Gaudens Balboa Bronze Collection BSK—8-inch by 2-inch tile in “Desert,” from Marble & Tile Collection. It is laid like bricks and offers a contrasting texture to the smooth granite. The brown 50/50 Dropped Divider SilGranit sink is by Blanco and is 9 inches deep and the Glacier Bay Lyndhurst bridge faucet with separate sprayer in brushed nickel came from Home Depot. SilGranit is made of 80 percent rock-hard granite, and features six fashionable colors and 21 shapes that complement any decor. SilGranit is the most cleanable sink available on the market today that resists scratches, stains and chips. Plus, it heats up to 536° F. It is also resistant to acids and alkalis, easy to maintain, colored all the way through and guaranteed with a limited lifetime warranty.

TRADE SECRETS • A DECORATOR CAN HELP YOU STRETCH YOUR KITCHEN BUDGET, no matter how small it is. • HIRE A DECORATOR to look objectively at your spaces and make suggestions that will help you remodel or redecorate on your budget. • SOMETIMES THE MOST EFFECTIVE STRATEGY is to first rethink what you already own.
“I just love the new island and the new, 9-inch deep double sink. The granite countertop is beautiful, and the space is fantastic.” Ellen points out she additionally bought the artwork from artists at The Bayou City Arts Festival. “Everyone who comes to the house can’t help but ooh and aah about our kitchen,” Ellen said.” I can’t help but agree with them!”
AFTER: While the built-ins did not change much, the island surely did! The granite came from Colors of the Rainbow and the new stainless dishwasher is by Bosch. The new gas range is by Sears Kenmore Elite and the sleek oven vent hood is by Zephyr. BEFORE: The multi-level, angled island just did not work for the owners and was a waste of good workspace.

RECLAIMING SPACE Ideas for turning wasted space into functional areas
BY ELLE CAVATORE
How many of us can lay claim to wasted space in our homes? There are ways we can reconfigure those under-utilized spaces, whether it’s in an attic, the foyer, in a hallway or under the stairs.
LEFT: Homeowners installed a custom shower after removing a fiberglass tub. They took what was once “dead space” to the right of the shower and built open shelving. ABOVE: The shower wall also offered shelving opportunities.

PHOTO GALLERIES Hallways, generally considered just a passageway from one room to another, beg for attention. A mini art or picture gallery—utilizing family photos that may have been collecting dust in an attic—can fill these corridors with visual interest. Interior Designer Oni Roberts of Oni Designs recommends using black and white photos for a more contemporary feel. “All frames should be the same color, all matted and symmetrical. You don’t want it to look cluttered.” Complete the look with good lighting. After all, you want to be able to see the pictures on the wall. For more traditional looks, Interior Designer Pamela Hope of Pamela Hope Designs says that you can mix and match frames, as well as black

and white, and color photos. “The key to this style is how the frames are arranged. Lay them out on the floor and put them together like a puzzle. Small and large frames can be stacked to achieve this. I like to think of my arrangement as a grid so that despite the different shapes and sizes, the overall collection forms nice lines on the outside edges. ” OFFICE SPACE Unless there is a revolving door of visitors coming to stay, why not turn the spare bedroom into a study or office? Hope suggests adding several bookcases to achieve this look. “Have bookshelves made to line at least one wall or buy inexpensive bookcases and put them side by side. If you like one bookcase, you won’t believe how good two or three look together. It gives a custom look for a lot less.” Don’t want to give up the spare bedroom? Then, have the best of both worlds by making it into an office as well. Roberts shares a tip on creating such a dual-purpose space: “Get an armoire that you can close up. Instead of a full size bed, get a day bed and make it look like a reading room. Just be sure the clutter is filed away so no one trips.” OPENING CLOSETS It is easy to hang on to the notion of what a closet typically offers, but what if it can be more than just a place to store clothes? A good carpenter can add a floating desk, remove the bars and add shelving to create the perfect work niche. Don Yokovich, president of the Closet Factory, explains that many older homes have reach-in closets. In order to maximize space he suggests removing the return walls. “Hire a trim carpenter or contractor to take out the return walls and open them up to reach into the corner areas. It’s not a real complicated process.” Walk-in closets also may make practical supply rooms. He suggests adding shelving, drawers that house papers and a wireless printer. “It is possible to combine organization and aesthetics while also making it functional and reachable.”
THIS PAGE: Attics offer more than storage space for holiday decorations. Interior Designer Laura Michaelides helped a Heights couple transform their attic space, with its slanted roof angles and small doorways, into a playroom for their little son. (photos by Miro Dvorscak)

LANDING LIBRARIES The upstairs landing can be much more than just a resting place. One useful and picturesque option is to turn the area into a mini library. In order to make the space more functional, Hope suggests adding a place to sit. “If space permits, you can anchor the area by adding an interesting chair and a small rug.”

KITCHEN STORAGE Kitchen kickboards may offer surprising storage options. The area under the cabinets generally has only an aesthetic purpose but it can be utilized to add more space. Kickboards (also known as toe boards) can be made into “kickboard cupboards.” John Johnston, owner of Designer Kitchens (and on the board of directors of the Kitchen and Bath Association) explains that this area varies in size. “In traditionally designed homes, the width of the toe-boards is about 4 inches or 5 inches tall, but modern designed homes can have up to 10-inch toe boards. Depending on the width of this area, you can have a toe board cupboard installed to hold pot and pan lids, Tupperware containers, rolled goods like aluminum foil and even stepstools LEFT: Interior Designer Oni if the space is large enough.” Those Roberts created niches in the extra inches of space can sometimes go fireplace wall, enabling her far for a person with limited space. client to display favorite colReclaiming wasted space can be a lections. worthwhile investment—of time and thought—that pays big in reaping total RIGHT: Build shelving for cookbooks underneath the enjoyment of your home. kitchen island.

TREND ALERT:
Outdoor Living Heats Up WITH ALL TYPES OF AMENITIES The heart of the home has gone alfresco. Everyone still gathers in the kitchen – but, yes, these days it’s outside, with complete living and dining spaces. Outdoor living spaces rank high on the must-have list for homes. A survey, in fact, conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of PLANET, the national trade association of landscape industry professionals, shows locals spending more than ever before on outdoor kitchens and living areas that include such desired amenities as landscaping, irrigation and lighting. Area designers and vendors, also excited about the growing outdoor trend, share a few cool new ideas to get the most from patios, balconies, decks and backyards. 34

DESIGNER TIPS Interior Designer Julia Blailock likes big downy cushions accenting furniture selections upholstered in cottons, linens or outdoor fabrics. Such a setting says, “Come sit down and relax.” “Indoor/outdoor rugs help define the outdoor space, in addition to bringing that indoor homey feeling outside. “When it comes to decorating, it’s all about layering,” she adds. “If you’re using a certain color palette inside, bring it on outside.” Blailock suggests hanging outdoor chandeliers and lights in loggias and porches. It underscores the coziness of the space and keeps it visually interesting. Interior Designer Kelly Amen (a participating designer for the ASID showhouse also featured in this issue) points to “comfort” as being the number one essential element for outdoor living. Because space is sometimes limited, it is advisable to consider “multi-tasking seating – and selecting tables that accommodate dining and can function as an occasional or cocktail table.” Smaller details count, he says. “It’s the personal pieces or collections that belong to the resident that make the space feel peaceful and familiar.” When designing the space, he suggests the seating area should face the kitchen so the chef/cook can interact with guests.

Mike Logan, owner of Texas Pit Crafters, says the must-haves among his clientele are “more high BTU burners for skillets and pots, in addition to stainless steel kitchen islands and wood-fired pizza ovens. He calls the pizza ovens the “ultimate cooking asset.” They range in price from $7,500 to $25,000. Logan says that Houston residents are fortunate in that they can utilize their outdoor kitchen investments just about yearround. “My clients are putting in sophisticated audio/visual systems with two to three TVs, premium speakers, and a control unit for the equipment – separate from what’s in the main house,” says Wayne Franks, owner of Outdoor Homescapes. Franks says clients also ask for exterior fan and light controls with dimmers, in addition to USB ports to accommodate “smart” computer and phone devices. A hot item for winter months: ceiling heaters. When roofing the outdoor living space, Franks says clients like to match the main house. And they tend to like having a raised bar at the kitchen, where guests can sit and watch the cooks.

One key item has been missing in outdoor living rooms: A TV that can withstand the elements. New technology is changing that. Fully sealed Ciil TVs from Peerless-AV are the first flatscreen panels to have no seams and no external electrical components. The TVs can withstand weather as cold as minus-40 degrees, in addition to ice and snow. The weather can soar up to 140 degrees without effect. Additionally, new wireless delivery makes it possible to beam movies and other content to outdoor TVs without cabling.
LIGHT IT UP Lighting guru Sarah Gandy, co-owner of Gandy2 Lighting Design, suggests, “using more small fixtures versus one large bright one that can create glare. Sprinkling small amounts of lighting throughout the landscape also looks better visually.” Gandy steers clients away from bright overhead lighting, as it can be uncomfortable and unflattering when sitting underneath. “Look at other opportunities, such as up-lighting in landscapes, wall sconces, accent lighting on architectural elements and pathways. Cost-effective LED lights spotlight more landscapes these days than other types, says Gandy. Even existing fixtures can be re-lamped to reap the benefits of lower wattage use. John Dailey, owner at Robert Huff Landscape Illuminations, says outdoor lighting offers practical benefits. “Good lighting on steps, walkways and driveways help prevent accidents. He also advises that a little light goes a long way, so avoid “over lighting.” And aim lights so they do not shine into a neighbor’s windows.

Navy blue is frequently seen matched with a crisp white frame – whether wicker, high-gloss aluminum, painted wood or faux wood.” Collections are designed for function, including storage ottomans and wedges, sofa tables and a serving station. A number of lines are using reclaimed teak in addition to South American hardwoods. Whether for relaxing alone or entertaining friends, take pleasure in the outdoors.

Selling a home often involves buying one too, so it is important to understand that timing the sale and the purchase of a new home is critical. Have a plan in place for your new home purchase and, if needed, temporary housing until a new home can be purchased. This market is very competitive and many homes go under contract within the first 24 to 48 hours so the exit strategy is just as important as the marketing strategy. What do you do that other agents may not to ensure a seller gets top dollar? I provide all of my listings with an in-home consultation, professional photos, a customized marketing plan, and a 24 hr. 1-800 information line -complete with virtual tour. I post the listing on multiple Web sites that allow buyers viewing access from the source they like to use for home searches. Where are the hottest markets in the Houston area? Houston's real estate market is experiencing a lot of activity in all areas. However a few of the hottest neighborhoods/areas are Houston Heights, Inner Loop 610, Near Inner Loop, Midtown, Energy Corridor and the Medical Center.
Which area of Houston is your specialty? Houston’s close-in neighborhoods including The Heights, River Oaks, West University, Bellaire, and Memorial. What advice can you share on how to sell homes quickly? I work extensively with my clients to make sure their home is ready for showings and provide an in-depth market analysis to ensure that the house is priced appropriately. Taking time before you put your home on the market can make a big difference to your bottom line. What’s one thing you would tell homeowners who are ready to put their home on the market? Call me! What do you do that other agents may not to ensure a seller gets top dollar? I provide an extensive marketing campaign for all my listings that is in writing. Additionally, I manage the process from beginning to closing to ensure that we get the most money we can for a property AND we get to closing. In the current market, a buyer can offer you a high sales price, but it means nothing if they can’t get to the closing table. I work very closely with my clients, the other agent, the title company and all other parties to the transaction to ensure we are hitting the milestones we should to get the property closed. Where are the hottest markets in the Houston area? All of the close-in neighborhoods in Houston have always been desirable neighborhoods, but we are seeing them take off like we haven’t in the past. The low inventory levels are causing prices to continue to rise. Buyers should be prepared for multiple offers in many instances.

VILLA FONTANA COUPLE TURNS
TO
ASID MEMBERS
TO CREATE THEIR DREAM HOME
By Susan Fox
W
hen 19 interior designers come together to collaborate with building craftsmen and specialized artisans to create one luxurious Tuscan villa, every detail is magnified in
distinction. This year’s American Society of Interior Designers (ASID)-Texas Gulf Coast Chapter’s show house, dubbed by organizers as “Villa Fontana,” certainly proves grand in size at 6,682-square-feet as well as impressive in its architecture and design. The sprawling stucco and stone home, adorned with a character52

istic red adobe roof, certainly gives way to a Mediterranean style but with New-World influences. “Our goal is always to provide the ultimate in design and convenience for our home buyers, but the extraordinary quality associated with ASID-Texas Gulf Coast Chapter set the bar even higher,” says D.C. Peterson, custom builder with Teramor Homes. Peterson and his Teramor colleague, Ken Alexander, chose craftsman from the Fort Bend County area, particularly since Villa Fontana is located in Sugar Land’s Riverstone community.

Tiffany Winkler didn’t want elaborate iron swirls so Rodney took pencil to pad during a flight to London and came up with a simple yet elegant design. (photo by Bruce Glass)
The show house was the first to have owners involved at the start. The couple, Rodney and Tiffany Winker, purchased the lakefront property in the gated enclave of Ivy Bend in November of 2011. For almost a year, the newlyweds worked with Patrick Berrios of Berrios Design to put their vision of an Italian farmhouse on paper. Interior Designer Kelly Gale Amen says he and his colleagues certainly wanted to spotlight their strengths and various talents in the Winkler’s home for public viewing, but they each also “wanted to tap into the couple’s memories of travels throughout Europe and Africa.”
“The designers really came up with valuable solutions,” says Rodney Winkler. “For instance, I wanted built-ins along one wall in my study, but we have three high windows, so how do you do that?” Designer Teena Caldwell, owner of the boutique furniture store at Twenty-Two Fifty Interiors, devised a shelving and design that Winkler calls “just perfect.” The Winklers say the designers and other professionals involved helped their dream home come true. Into the Foyer and Great Room Designer Jason Broughton wanted to create a space that “greeted guests with open arms. He arranged for displays in the foyer and upstairs landing to show family photos, artwork and select furnishings. He selected a neutral color palette to create a connecting cohesiveness but enlivened it all with touches of color. Designer Sharon Staley wanted the great room to host family gatherings and to reflect the rustic ambiance found in elegant Italian country homes. She chose a tailored sectional sofa by Kravet, selecting a coral color found in other parts of the home for the fabric. A table bench provides extra seating, if needed, and a large traditional rug anchored the space.
LEFT: A cathedral ceiling soars 27 feet in the great room/family room and features a large hand-carved trestle beam built on site. The Castle Combe smoked, oiled and pegged wood floors are so spectacular that Designer Sharon Staley kept the furnishings minimal and hung soft draperies. (photo by Miro Dvorscak) ABOVE: Jason Broughton designed a beautiful staircase that begins in the foyer of the Winkler home. The risers are stone and the steps are wood, framed by a handsome iron railing. He used a neutral color on the walls to achieve a seamless transition from one space to another. The Kitchen Designer Donna Vining envisioned giving the Winklers a “cook’s dream.” Custom cabinetry and opulent granite countertops complement the room’s stunning two-story stone chimney and reclaimed wood floors. The space flows seamlessly into the homes’ great room. “When I told Rodney I wanted a two-story kitchen, he thought I was crazy,” says Tiffany Winkler. “But I like the openness of it. And since everyone gathers there, the architect ended up designing the entire house around the kitchen.”

The Family Lounge Designer Blake Woods chose a lively color and pattern palette for what he dubbed the family lounge. ‘It was important to pick washable, family-friendly and preshrunk fabrics,” he says. (photo by Michael Hunter)
58
Designer Blake Woods says when asked to select a room to design, he opted for the “game room,” located off the great room. He suggested turning the space into one where the couple could cozy up for TV viewing and also enjoy more intimate conversations with guests. “The home owners’ love of Tuscany set the tone for the color palette. We decided rich earthy colors with accents of red and orange. The wall color I chose is Sherwin Williams, Tavern Taupe (SW7058). I chose a dark patterned carpet to complement the dark, hand-scraped wood floors. “

713.668.9689 | www.sharonstaleyinteriors.com How do your clients' tastes or personalities influence design projects? Each client brings their own flavor to the design process: styles or colors they are drawn to, needs they have for each space to make it the most successful for them. What's the first thing you ask a client when starting a project? What is the most important thing you wish to accomplish? What initially drew you to interior design? My father owned successful furniture stores here in Houston and was also president of the Furniture Association, so I grew up in the industry, sharing my father’s passion for quality design. How can a potential client know if a particular designer is a good fit for their project? A client will know they’ve found the right designer for them when they feel truly “heard”. A good designer listens to what the client wants and applies her talent, knowledge & experience toward making a space tailor-made for the client.

Diana S. Walker Interior Design 713.520.1775 dwalkerdesign@sbcglobal.net dianaswalkerinteriordesign.net What is your design philosophy? Most people have a strong concept of what they want at the beginning of a project. I maintain project focus so that their vision is realized. How do your clients' tastes or personalities influence design projects? I am happiest when I can contribute to the project, and make their concept better than even they considered possible. The collaborative process is my specialty. I like to see the joy on someone's face when I bring them the perfect solution they couldn't articulate. What's the first thing you ask a client when starting a project? What experiences have they had with other professionals and was that a good experience? If they haven't worked with a designer or an architect, or a builder, then I can set the standard of what they can expect. What initially drew you to interior design? A friend who saw all I had done for her over the years, and encouraged me to seek this career path. How can a potential client know if a particular designer is a good fit for their project? Ask questions! Can they relate comfortably at the first or second meeting? Do they agree with each other about concepts and style? Talk to their other clients? Do you agree with their process, their level of expertise for your project, and understand their fees? Do you have a gut feeling that makes you hesitate?

The Guest Rooms Designer Lynne Jones says she wanted to go with “an African vibe” for one of the three guest rooms. That was the thought process behind all art, which included having the artist paint directly on the walls in the vanity area, in addition to an exciting backdrop attached just behind the headboard. “It’s all mostly non color, but the room offers a lot of texture, which I think is key!” Designer Deborah Rivera says for the in-law/guest suite, she selected four different patterned fabrics that work together. I love it when there is visual impact in a room. In order to achieve this, I used a few oversized items such as the upholstered headboard; the gilded mirror placed on top of a modern yet rustic desk, and by stacking the antiqued prints vertically. All this adds scale to the room.” Designer Laurie Coton did the third guest room. Her main goal centered around the room ultimately transitioning into a space suited to a growing child. She chose timeless wood pieces and a painted headboard to set the stage. Additional ASID designers and their spaces: Angela Lee, nursery; Teena Caldwell, study; Keron Weathered, exercise room; Kelly Gale Amen, loggia and outdoor spaces; Donna Jarnigan, breakfast room and power bath; Lone Star College team: Kelly Barry with Julie Kuney, Lily Powell and Jessica Viera, mail center and utility; Sydney Elise Greenwalt, garages. ABOVE: Because the homeowners enjoyed a recent trip to Africa -- and wanted their home to reflect some memories of their experiences there -- Interior Designer Lynne T. Jones hired local artist Stacy Hosrich to create a magnificent painting. Lynne placed the large piece of canvas art behind the headboard for grand effects. The night table is comprised of old stacked luggage. ABOVE LEFT: In this sophisticated vignette, Designer Deborah Rivera melds together a variety of textures, and marries rustic with traditional elegance. LEFT: Rivera’s glamorous downstairs bedroom is very textural, beginning with the studded nightstand complemented by the architectural prints and wood-based lamp. The sumptuous bedding is by Lili Alessandra. The duvet cover is actually made from wood pulp fibers, making it feel like silk. THE HORT WHISPERER
Sphaeralcea incana
Pavonia lasiopetala
Hibiscus chenesis
Hibiscus syriacus
MALLOW MADNESS BY DARRIN DULING
With summer upon us, our gardens and natural areas are popping with cheerful flowers known as the Malvaceae, plants in the hibiscus family. Mention “hibiscus” and most of us immediately think of the tropical rainbow-hued flowers gracing nearly every poolside and patio: the Chinese hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis). It also conjures up more temperate garden favorites, such as rose-of-Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus) and rose-mallow (Hibiscus moscheutos). All of the aforementioned are being constantly reinvented by hybridizers every year in order to bring in something “new” to our gardens . . . . They are all lovely, and I could wax poetic about them, but my goal here is to lead you into more adventurous territory. Let’s look at a trio of up-and-comers in our nursery trade that are actually adapted to very harsh, hot and dry conditions, while still looking as fresh as a new dollar bill (more on that later). Additionally, these are all very useful, small-space shrubs, maturing to about 3-foot tall by 3-foot wide, which happen to be native to Texas. First on my list is the apricot mallow (Sphaeralcea incana) with delightful, gray felt-like foliage resembling little oak leaves. In midspring it covers itself with perky bright-orange flowers and continues this display sporadically through November. Give it full sun and well-drained soil -- and water sparingly once established.
Next, Texas rock rose, Pavonia lasiopetala, produces an abundance of charming 1-inch rich pink flowers from late spring right up to frost. Butterflies love it. Cut it back if it gets too leggy, and it will quickly surge back and flower even stronger. Lastly, Hibiscus martianus, the heartleaf rosemallow, sports attractive downy foliage that is the backdrop for shocking red, 3-inch to 4inch wide flowers from spring through autumn. It grows and flowers in sun or light shade but, like its cousins, will lose its compact shape and eventually die if it is kept too moist. We will no doubt be revisiting the hibiscus family in the future, as there are over 5,000 species worldwide, ranging from creeping herbaceous perennials to colossal tropical trees topping out beyond 200-feet tall. In addition to immense ornamental value, this family is the source of cotton, balsa, okra, cocoa and cola nuts. Imagine life without chocolate and cola drinks—or the dollar bills to buy them with, as our national currency is predominantly made of cotton fiber, not paper.
Keep on Growing!

I've got all kinds of fun ideas for us! All that's missing is you. HSPCA is open seven days a week, so stop in and meet me. I'll be waiting. – by Robert Coplin
BEAUTIFUL POOLS at affordable
Editor's Note: Robert is HH&H's own dog whisperer. Thanks to his ability to give the SPCA pets a personality, the organization reports most of the featured dogs and cats get placed. And that's really great news. Thank you everyone!
