his month we’re focusing on what to do and where to go for those important occasions when your own home just isn’t big enough. Our feature on venue spaces, both in town and out of town, is a great starting point for planning your next event to remember. Another way to get more space is to take it outside and our showcase on outdoor living covers the latest in kitchens and grills, decks, patios and shade covering. Hibachi grills are hot right now, and so are fire features, gaucho grills and wood-fired pizza ovens. Summer is here and we’ve found some fabulous red, white and blue finds for entertaining and decorating; pair that with our ohso-fab recipe and dining options and you’ve got everything you need to take the party from Father’s Day to the Fourth of July. We’re putting the spotlight on an Oak Forest remodel that’s a lighting designer’s dream and an exotic update by Four Square Design Studio that perfectly merges the magic of Indonesia with a soft modernism. Our intrepid designer in the field is back from Milan where she

trong colors, a playfulness with texture and scale, and the courage to experiment with new techniques will result in a style that’s uniquely yours. Whether you’re a DIY goddess or simply curious about stencils and creative paint techniques, there are plenty of methods for transforming a humdrum space into something vibrant, joyful and extraordinary.

STENCILS The 12-foot walls in Jill Peveto’s small butler’s pantry were blank and boring and called out for “something” to add interest. Peveto and her husband Robert, who own a 19th century 18 house& home | June 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

house in Galveston, decided to paint the walls a deep khaki color – Gobi Desert by Behr – with a simple stencil overlay in creamy Cottage White. The room came to life. “I was surprised by how much it transformed the space,” Peveto says. “The pattern gives it a subtle Victorian feel without overwhelming it. Now, it’s the room visitors most admire.” The use of stencils and decorative painting is practically part of human DNA. It dates back 65,000 years to Neanderthal art in Spanish caves. There you can see outlines of repeating handprints alongside primitive etchings of animals and scenes from daily life.

Today, patterns and paint can be used to enliven walls and floors or to add pizzazz to fabrics, lampshades and serving trays — even upholstery. Massachusetts-based artist and author Kristin Nicholas has just released her latest book, Crafting a Patterned Home: Painting, Printing, and Stitching Projects to Enliven Every Room, a project-heavy guide that creatively explores how to mix and layer patterns and colors together. “Pattern is inspiring and intoxicating. It’s warm and welcoming. It’s cheerful and full of joy,” writes Nichols. The author, who lives on a working sheep farm and who has transformed her 1751 cape style farmhouse into an explosion of color, encourages experimenting with homemade patterns for a more interesting, lively look. She’s big on using embroidery, knitting, crochet, ceramics, painting and stamping to add personalized touches to a home. “Handmade patterns have a quality to them that cannot be obtained by a machine. Although repetitious, making patterns by hand is challenging and creative,” she writes. While it’s true that we don’t all have the patience and inclination to hand-stamp an entire room, bright and bold wallpapers can also do the trick. Nicholas has designed a trio of Garden of Family Farm Life mural panels for Casart Coverings, with whimsical birds and flowers against colorful backdrops like Maize, Pumpkin Sunset and Clear Blue Sky. Visiting a local upholstery shop such as Hien Lam Upholstery or Sunny Road Interiors is a safe way to experiment with pattern and color. Practice placing florals from the Jaima Brown Home collection against stripes or geometric prints and see how it changes the mood and feel. The consultants on staff can also show you their look books to help jumpstart your inspirational journey.

TROMPE L’OEIL AND FAUX FINISHES

In central Texas, the Painted Churches illustrate how Czech and German immigrant artisans used colorful patterns and clever trompe l’oeil to decorate their simple sanctuaries and to serve as a reminder of home. The Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Shiner features a magnificent mural of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane. Houston designers who specialize in paint selections and decorative applications say that even clients with minimalist and modern décor like a bit of color and pattern. “This year at Round Top I saw a huge number of painted French antiques. Very expensive, but still in demand as accent pieces,” says Julie Downey of Downey Design LLC. “The right piece or the right paint acts as a focal point; it can make a space feel beautiful and finished.” One of her new projects is a pure white polyaspartic UV light-resistant floor with a faux finish that looks like marble. 20 house& home | June 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

Faux is the term used to describe a finish that looks like another material, such as wood, but can provide greater resiliency than the actual materials. “This faux marble floor is regal but easy to clean and it won’t chip, crack or turn yellow in the sun. It’s part of a neutral backdrop which allows the artwork to be the focus,” says Downey. Creating a one-of-a-kind look is satisfying but it should be done carefully because it’s easy to overdo. Too much is too much, she warns. “It’s important to know what you want from a room. You have to get down to the bones of what you are trying to achieve in a particular space and not get distracted,” she adds. Downey was designing a hotel for a client who purchased a large, elaborate fountain in her world travels and wanted it placed in the center of the lobby. “It was a beautiful artifact but it didn’t fit the space and it could have been a disaster,” she says. Avoiding catastrophes and homeowner disappointment is part of the designer’s forte. “Sometimes a client sees a color in someone else’s home and they just have to have it,” says Patty Hoffman with Patty Hoffman Wall Designs. “Color is subjective and reflective. It depends on your lighting and the amount of sunlight and exposure. You have to live with samples in different lighting situations to know what you’re getting. It may not look like the color you were expecting when it’s on your walls,” she says. When Hoffman, who has done all types of decorative painting over the past 25 years, picks a base coat for clients or suggests a faux finish, she draws from their personal style — colors they favor and artworks they love. “I visit their home and I take in everything I see and then I make suggestions. My goal is to make it look like their stuff grew there.” A Houston-area triathlete wanted trompe l‘oeil — a flat painting that looks three-dimensional — in his laundry room as a tribute to his favorite sport. Hoffman painted his athletic equipment on a clothesline, along with shorts, shirt, goggles and shoes. “It looked so real that one of the contractors had to touch it to be sure,” she says. After Hurricane Harvey flooded his office, one local physician had new cabinets made with insets painted to look like zebrawood. The rest was a soft, metallic gray. “It turned out to be spectacular,” Hoffman says. If you love decorative painting but don’t have the budget for it, it’s still possible for DIY aficionados to incorporate paint and patterns into their home. “Find something at a resale shop and get a kit for crackling or faux finish,” Downey suggests.“Don’t be afraid to experiment.”

SALONE DEL MOBILE.MILANO 2018 The Evolution of the Bathroom Into a Sanctuary for Relaxation and Wellness By anne Breux

ll eyes were on Milan during the annual Salone Internazionale del Mobile in April when more than 430,000 attendees converged to see the latest in international design. A greater number of Houstonians made it out to the showcase because it is more than just a market; it is a place for ideas. With the goal of making creativity and innovation compatible with nature, energy consumption and the use of sustainable recyclable and non-polluting materials and techniques, the Salone del Mobile.Milano introduced its “Living Nature” exhibition in the Piazza del Duomo in front of Palazzo Reale. Divided into the four seasons, the 500 square meter exhibit showcased familiar design objects in untraditional natural set-

tings. It was beautiful to walk through this technological feat that generated clean energy through photovoltaic panels, then transferred different temperatures to each area. “Winter” was set to zero degrees centigrade to preserve the natural snow inside. Concurrent events included the International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition, Eurocucina FTK – Technology for the Kitchen 2018 and the International Bathroom Exhibition 2018. Bathroom design has evolved from a strictly functional space into a sanctuary for relaxation and wellness. Almost 250 exhibitors were on hand to showcase high-performance products that conserved energy with an emphasis on water efficiency.

Gessi’s Italian-made products and accessories demand that the bathroom should become an extension of the living area; a private spa that serves as a place of relaxation and wellness. Features include Roman tub mixers, body sprays and waterfalls and come in a variety of finishes including copper, mirror steel and Ceramilux. The recent partnering of industry leaders Boffi and Fantini means that contemporary designer Michael Anastassiades has put his mark on the group’s Aboutwater collection. Sophisticated designs by Italian architect Piero Lissoni for Boffi and David Rockwell for Gessi’s Inciso Collection are setting new standards in excellence. A new technology developed by Wall&decò has resulted in a laminated wallpaper that can be used inside the shower stall or on any wet surrounding wall. Thousands of patterns can be scaled and printed, jeopardizing tile’s dominance in the arena. The Wet System™ line adheres to cement, plasterboard, concrete, glass and ceramic tiles and is resistant against detergents. The collaboration between the Italian-based Kartell, the world leader in plastic furniture, and the Switzerland-based Laufen, the world's leading manufacturer of bathroom fixtures, has led to innovative developments in their renowned Spring in the “Living Nature” exhibit. Method To make the chimichurri dressing, combine all ingredients except oils in a blender. Puree until smooth and slowly add in oil while the blender is running on medium low speed. Remove from the blender and chill for 30 minutes before serving. For the steak, heat the grill to high heat. Brush the steaks with oil and season with 44 Farms Salt & Pepper Blend on both sides. Grill for three minutes on each side for medium rare, four minutes per side for medium or five minutes on each side for medium well. Remove from the grill and rest for five minutes. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Toss corn kernels with one teaspoon of oil and season with half teaspoon of kosher salt. Roast in oven for three minutes and then set aside to cool. In a large bowl, toss together the lettuces, corn, tomatoes, sweet peppers and dressing. Divide the salad between four bowls. Top each salad with avocado, feta and croutons. Thinly slice the steak against the grain and place it on top of the salads. Yield: Four servings

GO BIG AND STAY HOME Double Your Living Space by Transforming the Back Yard With Decks, Patios and Outdoor Kitchens By BarBara Canetti

W

e spend so much time cooped up in cars commuting and logging hours at school or the office that cabin fever can soon set in. There’s something special about getting back to nature, hearing the birds sing and smelling fresh flowers while entertaining guests or just relaxing with the family. For those who have embarked on a back yard redo by adding decks, patios and outdoor kitchens, the rewards can be tremendous.

OUTDOOR KITCHENS When entertaining at home guests tend to congregate in the kitchen. So why not make use of Houston’s moderate climate (well, most of the year) and take the crowd outside and into an outdoor kitchen? 38 house& home | June 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

Creating a stylish and functional outdoor living space makes entertaining more casual while letting nature handle the decorating with plants, rocks and trees. In the evenings a lovely sunset as the background for a dinner party makes for a memorable occasion. Outdoor living spaces – particularly kitchens – have been growing in popularity. Gone are the days when a barbecue grill and picnic table served as the outdoor kitchen. Now, gas or wood-burning grills, sinks, refrigerators and ice makers, side burners and lots of counter space are all included in newly built or rearranged yards. Comfortable all-weather furniture is a must with some high-end furnishings rivaling those found indoors. “Remember, an outdoor kitchen is a project you only want to do once at this house, so do it right the first time so you do not have to do it over,” says Brent Gary of Cunningham Gas Products. “You want to try and make sure that when you build an outdoor kitchen that it is in an area where the weather does not dictate when you can use it.” Gary suggests making sure there is some shade or roof covering the kitchen — even a patio umbrella can make it more pleasant in the summer. Position gas grills so they are not facing prevailing winds, which can cause the control panel to overheat and possibly melt some of the wiring. He also cautions that not all stainless steel is high quality stainless. “In our high

humidity climate, some grades of stainless steel will rust out. That is why it is called ‘stainless’ steel and not ‘stain proof.’” He says homeowners can never have too much counter space or too many electrical outlets. Soft lighting adds to the ambience and he suggests installing rope lighting in the raised backsplash and under the countertop or bar extension for a very nice look at night. “Some people incorporate glass blocks on the island and then install some backlighting inside the island to illuminate the glass blocks.” Designers of outdoor spaces also are moving towards materials with a more rustic look. “Using repurposed barn wood makes a great looking outdoor kitchen island, [plus there is] the benefit of using recycled materials,” says Gary. Most outdoor kitchens are usually built as a straight island, an L-shaped island or as a U-shaped island. “In all my years of working with outdoor kitchen clients I have never had a client tell me that they wished they had built a smaller island. I’ve had plenty tell me they wished they had built a larger island,” Gary says. Mike Logan of Texas Pit Crafters says homeowners need as little as 48 inches to create an outdoor kitchen space, although bigger is better. He says that even having a ten-foot space is enough to accommodate both a grill (for direct cooking over coals or gas burners) and a smoker (for indirect cooking with heat and smoke). “We are seeing an increasing interest in South American grilling. This is done directly over the wood coals and often with a grill surface that holds the food being raised or lowered. We call these gaucho grills,” says Logan. “Also, more folks are installing wood-fired pizza ovens.” “Lots of folks like being outdoors and cooking out is part of their lifestyle,” says Logan. “Our outdoor kitchens are becoming more elaborate every year. Ice makers, dishwashers and deep fryers are all being included as standard items.”

DECKS, PATIOS AND PERGOLAS Brian McQuin, owner of Texas Decks, says he has noticed his clients’ first priority for their decks is quality of workmanship and materials. “My clients will scale back the size of their project in order to get the best product available for their dollar. That could be upgrading from an entry level composite deck to a slightly smaller higher end, more beautiful composite decking product or a slightly smaller outdoor kitchen with higher end equipment,” McQuin says. He notes there is a shift away from natural wood decks to manufactured products, even though the initial cost may be higher. 39

“That cost difference will soon be negated by the lower maintenance costs and the longevity these products offer over a natural product,” he says, pointing to Trex® composite decking or AZEK® PVC decking, which fare better than natural pine in the sun and rain. Russell Budnick with Creative Contours Landscape Co. says wood is recommended for pergolas and arbors, as well as for the cabinets in outdoor kitchens. He prefers granite and tastefully done concrete countertops. McQuin says homeowners should take the time to thoughtfully design their outdoor space and integrate it into their backyard usage, for now and in the future. “The number one requirement in a space — be it a composite deck or a complete outdoor kitchen with a shingled roof overhead — is that it flows well and blends in with the house,” he says. “Because if the space doesn’t have a good flow between the different areas: seating, cooking and traffic, then the space that was created for that client will not be used to its fullest capabilities. Nor will it be as comfortable to use.” The design should also take advantage of Houston’s climate for almost year round use, and it’s important that the kitchen or deck be built in the shaded areas of the yard. “I would say shade, shade and more shade with either a pergola or patio cover,” says McQuin, who also suggests adding ventilation with ceiling fans. “[They] at least make outdoor entertaining bearable during our summers.”

For major backyard renovations with lots of moving features and elements, it’s difficult to work with multiple contractors and get everything just right. A perfectly designed space is like a puzzle with each piece affecting the next. We checked in with Rob Douglass, managing partner and project developer at Texas Custom Patios, a company that has more than 1,500 projects under its belt. He says they’ve been doing this for so long that they write quotes instead of estimates. “That’s one of the unique things about our company. We’re hard bidding a project; that’s the guarantee of the price. Even though it’s remodeling to some degree and there are some things that you run into. That’s an advantage; we’re not nickel and diming them to death.” That deep experience also helps homeowners decide what their dream backyard should look like. Between the Houston and DallasFort Worth offices they’ve managed to compile an impressive and diverse portfolio of photographs, which helps narrow down the homeowner’s preferred style. Although some clients already know exactly what they want, which is how a man from Denmark ended up with an outdoor

living room that blends the best of the Texas Hill Country with cedar finishes and Scandinavian accents. Douglas says that he and his team of project developers act as ambassadors for their clients and stay involved with the project from inception to completion. “If I design and sell you a project I’m not handing you off to a construction manager. I’m ordering materials, checking on progress daily, I’m involved throughout the project,” says Douglass. “I’m your only contact with the company. Nothing can get lost in translation.” He says the big trend these days is fire features, such as fire pits

and fireplaces with inserts, which can provide warmth in the cooler months but are a nice aesthetic year round. The flat hibachi-style grills also are popular and are now being made to withstand the elements. “They can do burgers, they can do vegetables; they can do anything. It just changes how you might think about grilling outdoors. “The goal is to recreate their favorite room in the house. Sometimes when they buy a house they didn’t have a choice in the design, and here’s an opportunity,” says Douglass. “It’s a good feeling. At the end of the day we’re building a want instead of a need,” says Douglass. “I think people are thrilled with the spaces that they have.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE Venue Rentals in Houston and Surrounding Areas BY SUSIE TOMMANEY

L

ife’s important moments are best shared with family and friends, but as the invitation list grows it often becomes apparent that your home just won’t be large enough. From weddings, engagements and anniversary parties to sweet sixteens, bar/bat mitzvahs, quinceañeras and even holiday celebrations, choosing the right venue can make all the difference in creating a memory that will last a lifetime. The size of the space, the style of its décor and its proximity to the majority of your guests should all be considered before booking a venue. But perhaps the most important element is timing; the further out you plan, the more options become available.

48 house& home | June 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

START PLANNING NOW While many brides begin planning their weddings two years out, that’s not a timeline that works for everybody. Couples seem more comfortable with a year-long engagement, which still gives plenty of time to try for their first, second and third choice venues. Teens dreaming of their sweet sixteen and quinceañera events also are making decisions six months or a year in advance. If you just can’t get in and you’re really and truly in love with a particular venue, there are a few options. If you’re flexible about the date, let the venue know so they’ll put you on standby if any cancellations arise.

The majestic live oak tree at The Houstonian twinkles with thousands of lights, making any special occasion a magical one.

Our region has so many wonderful event spaces that you could easily fall in love with a completely different venue. Think about what was so appealing about your first choice: its geography, the magnificent ballroom, the manicured gardens or its versatility as both a ceremony and reception site. Then start your hunt for another space that has similar characteristics. You’ll be surprised at what you can find.

KNOW YOUR GUEST LIST Once you know how many family members, friends and coworkers you’re going to invite, it becomes easier to choose the right venue size. After all you wouldn’t put a small family gathering in a cavernous ballroom; nor would it be appropriate to fit a seventh-generation Texan with extended family into a small dining hall. For crowds around 2,000 you can’t go wrong with Bayou City Event Center — large enough for helicopter landings, fireworks shows and water slides — or Corinthian Houston inside the historic First National Bank building with its neoclassical columns, white marble floors and soaring ceilings. Immerse yourself in old world atmosphere with Venetianinspired murals and French elegance at Chateau Cocomar, or with Italian marble and charm at The Astorian. Other large capacity venues include the Omni Houston Hotel, Southern 50 house& home | June 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

Lace Estates, The Revaire and The Woodlands Resort. Bigger isn’t always better and a moderately sized event alleviates some of the stress in planning and is certainly easier on the pocketbook. “Event planning should always be a fun, easy and an enjoyable experience, and it is at The Bell Tower on 34th,” says Roger Igo, president of the dramatically stunning venue, where every photograph is a keeper. The mature trees and stunning grounds of The Houstonian offer a great escape near The Galleria with plenty of choices for planning a party. They have six indoor spaces for any size event but there’s something magical about attending a wedding in the meadow or hosting an intimate dinner for 24 guests under the twinkling lights of the live oak tree. “A key part of life’s biggest celebrations involves the selection of a memorable menu. Ask potential venues what food they are known to do at a very high level — that is, what their customers rave about and come back to enjoy over and over again,” says Lisa Hopkins Barry, Director of Catering and Conference Services at The Houstonian. “Make sure it’s something that’s approachable for your guests and relevant to today’s trends. That, in my opinion, is the perfect menu.” (Insider tip: Be sure to ask them about their decadent Dulcey Brownie Bite.

CEREMONY TO CELEBRATION Multipurpose spaces can offer a solution not found with other venues. The Cleveland Civic Center does just that with its 8,625-square foot ballroom, conference center and covered pavilion. The ballroom can be opened up or converted into two or four smaller spaces. “We can have four events going on at once; it’s soundproof,” says Frieda Joyce, the tourism and marketing director for the center. “We have a pavilion on the side of our facility where people will get married and then have a reception indoors. We’re about 35 miles north of Houston, so we get a lot of renters from Pearland, Pasadena and Kingwood.”

OUT OF TOWN Whether it’s a destination wedding you’re after, you’ve always dreamed of a sunset ceremony on the beach, or your kids all attended the University of Texas or Texas A&M and that’s where all their friends live, there are plenty of reasons to book your event outside the city limits. Halfway between Houston and Austin along the 290 corridor is the Burton Roadhouse. The history is evident in this charming pub known for its killer pizzas, regionally known live music and small town charm. 52 house& home | June 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

Speaking of history, Galveston has some of the most stunning venues imaginable. While the 1859 Ashton Villa is not available for public tours, the island’s first mansion can be rented and holds 200 seated or 250 standing guests. St. Joseph’s Church, built by German immigrants in 1859, also is available for private functions. The 1880 Garten Verein pavilion has been lovingly restored and offers spectacular views from every angle, while The Lasker Inn has come a long way since its start as a refuge for homeless children; its rooftop observation deck offers breathtaking views of the constellations. Galveston’s hotels solve the problem of where to stay and provide stunning rental spaces along with catering capabilities, guest rooms and so much more. From The San Luis to the historic Hotel Galvez and The Tremont House, you don’t have to be born on the island to understand the appeal. The equestrian set won’t want to miss Haras Hacienda, known for its fabled Lusitano horses. THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX Carrie Bradshaw chose the New York Public Library for her wedding in Sex and the City: The Movie, and it’s just that kind of “outside the box” thinking that guarantees an event to remember. Here in Houston the historic Julia Ideson Building, with its arched windows and distinctive Spanish architecture, has eight different rooms that can be rented to the public. Also off the beaten path is 14 Pews, the former church that now Host your event at the National Museum of Funeral History. Photo by Monica Rhodes

hosts visual arts, film and theater events. Those original pews are still there, making this the perfect setting for almost 100 guests. Museums are a great way to break the cookie cutter mold and experiment with your entertaining style. Introduce the romance of the west at The Bryan Museum with its exquisite Renaissance Revival-style building surrounded by landscaping in the heart of Galveston. Another museum that’s available, though not for the faint of heart, is the National Museum of Funeral History. It has hosted birthday parties, Halloween parties and non-traditional weddings in and around its extensive collection of historic hearses and caskets. Not all celebrations are joyous, however. In the event of a funeral, the NMFH can host your memorial service while also assisting with the writing of an obituary or eulogy.

EXOTIC ISLAND ECLECTIC Design Brings the Magic of Indonesia to a Mid-Century Modern By Natalie de la Garza

B

eautifully thatched roofs and vaulted ceilings, exotic antiques and textured surfaces: That’s what Laura Michaelides, Four Square Design Studio’s principal designer, found in the heads of her globe-trotting clients when she signed on to develop the master bedroom and bath of their 1950s Memorial-area home. It may sound incongruous, but Michaelides says experience has taught her that ethnic antiques, whether they be Southeast Asian, African or pieces of Americana, tend to look good against a modern, clean backdrop. Luckily her clients — as Michaelides says many people today are — were interested in a transitional style, a soft modernism defined by eclecticism and its attempt to blend together different traditional and contemporary elements. “I would say these clients had very eclectic tastes. They like the clean backdrop, but they definitely love antiques and they love ethnic pieces,” says Michaelides. “Often the most interesting interiors for me are those that incorporate some of each.” The merging of styles can best be seen in the bedroom where Michaelides first decided to vault the existing eight-foot ceiling. Though standard for homes built in the 1950s, when coupled with the size of the room – an enormous 26 feet by almost 19 feet – the relatively low ceiling created proportions that Michaelides says “seemed off.” So, they removed the existing ceiling to expose the full height of the shed roof above. Now starting at nine feet at its lowest point and rising up to 11 feet at its highest, the newly vaulted ceiling gives the room an airy, lofted feel in addition to hinting at the Indonesian interiors favored by her clients. Four Square Designer Sarah Hannah took the lead on a complete redesign of the room’s conventional stone fireplace. It now boasts a plaster surround with an almost adobe feel, its new chunky wooden mantel from M&M Lumber further tying it to the character of the space. Above the fireplace are sconces from Brown that have been repurposed from a

chandelier and co-designed with Merge Studios. For the closet Michaelides installed a panel on a barn door-like track. The architectural antique was made from a Latin American door sourced from Chateau Domingue. Michaelides says that when you originally entered the bedroom you walked directly into the space so, to add a bit of coziness, they created a little foyer with walnut bookshelves. At the center of the bookcase, which is filled with books and knick-knacks from her clients’ travels, is a “suggestion” — a window opening that allows you to peek into the room without seeing it completely. But it’s when you come around the bookcase that you see the star of the room: an Indonesian antique bed. The wooden four-poster with canopy, which Michaelides describes as “big and dramatic,” is the new focal point of the room. Behind the bed they decided to hang grasscloth to further the textural feeling of the Indonesian antique. “We thought that we could bring in some touches to try to give the client the feeling that they liked from those

56 house& home | June 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

[Indonesian] spaces and from their travels, and a lot of that did have to do with the relationship of the indoors to the outdoors too,” says Michaelides. Because many of the master suites her clients showed her were retreats, Michaelides made “bringing the outdoors in” a guiding principle for the project. She says that when clients ask to blur the line between indoors and outdoors, they are asking “to feel the presence of nature as much as possible when they’re inside.” To accomplish this Michaelides installed a wall of sliding glass doors on the north wall of the bedroom. Though it’s the side of the house that faces the street, her clients enjoy a deep yard surrounded by a plant-lined privacy fence, ensuring they can appreciate the view without fear of anyone looking back. In front of the glass doors is a wall of very simple, lightweight drapery from Duralee that at night can be closed to add an even cozier feel to the room. But perhaps the best example of the thin line between the interior and exterior can be found in the bathroom.

The master bath features a wall-mounted shower and Victoria + Albert tub.

Her clients were interested in a transitional style, a soft modernism defined by eclecticism and its attempt to blend together different traditional and contemporary elements.

At first sight, Michaelides says the master bath was “dated and dysfunctional.” Its transformation began when Michaelides completely opened up the same north wall as in the bedroom, so when “you’re showering, when you’re bathing, you’re looking at nature.” Inside the bathroom now sits a double vanity, wall-mounted shower and modern, white tub from Victoria + Albert set against a wall of deeply colored Moroccan encaustic tiles. But it’s outside, where Michaelides has installed a stainless steel outdoor shower with handmade showerhead from Calazzo, that the line between indoor and outdoor, already reduced to a pane of clear glass, can disappear completely on a beautiful day. Michaelides admits the outdoor shower is not something you see every day in the big city, but the complete privacy of the space allows it. “It really does feel very open to nature, but that’s what it’s all about. It’s all about trying to open the interior space to nature.” Though the process took about two years — a year of planning and a year of construction with a lot of starts and stops — Michaelides says it was worth it. “The different parts of the room together are what make it special. It’s that combination of the airiness of the space, the unusual furnishings. All these elements add to make the place feel special,” says Michaelides. “I think it really does feel special.”

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION! Lighting Designers Incorporate High-End Fixtures During Update of Oak Forest Craftsman By Marsha Canright

W

hen lighting designers Sarah and Lance Gandy purchased a three-bedroom Craftsman in 2014, it was ripe for a remodel. Located in Oak Forest, the house had good bones, a broad front porch and room to expand. With two daughters and a third child expected, the family needed more space than was offered — at least one additional bedroom and another bath. Still, they liked the location, which shaved time off their commute and they believed a few key changes could make the space work. “My husband and I like to tinker with houses; we enjoy making a good house better,” Sarah Gandy says. “We never think of where we live as a forever home; it’s more of a project.” The house at 2322 Gardenia was built in 2001 after Tropical Storm Allison flooded the previous home. The new structure had been raised about four feet on pier and beam, which has protected it against subsequent storms. Before the family moved in, the couple swapped the kitchen tile for hardwood floors that matched the rest of the down-

stairs and removed wall-to-wall carpeting upstairs. They also repainted the interior from baby blue to light, neutral colors. “We knew that we could add a master bedroom on the second floor by extending over the driveway but the planning went through many possible iterations,” she says. Over the next two years they planned and executed a master bedroom addition along with renovations to the kitchen and all three bathrooms. The end result is a “tree house” bedroom with a vaulted ceiling and windows on three sides and a reimagined master bath that is both airy and functional. “The bedroom was all new construction and the bath was a total redo with a new layout, a window, vanity, tub and shower,” says Gandy. The couple was able to economize by minimizing changes to the infrastructure. The new tub is where the old vanity was and the new vanity is where the old tub was. “The challenge of remodeling a home is to create a beautiful space with a pleasing layout in as few strokes as possible,” she says.

The Gandys, who both have architecture degrees, selected finishes and layouts that pleased them personally but always considered how those changes would appeal to a range of people for resale purposes. “Everything you move costs money — especially electrical and plumbing — so you want it to be beautiful but to keep it cost effective,” she says. The master bedroom and bath combination took about three months from start to finish; the builder was Daren Bartula with Bartula Brothers Construction and the Gandys say the process was executed carefully and quickly considering the breadth of the project. The kitchen changes were smaller in scale but the reorganized space made a huge aesthetic difference for the couple. A small, bulky island with a black granite top dominated the kitchen. By moving it to an adjacent blank wall the Gandys were able to increase counter space and to have a new island that looks like a piece of furniture. “Visually it works better. The wood top is lighter and the open storage below gives the room an airy feel,” she says.

The new “tree house” master bedroom has a vaulted ceiling and windows on three sides.

As lighting designers, they updated most of the decorative lighting fixtures in the house and on the front and back porches. “We retrofitted the exterior with all LED lighting to maximize efficiency since they tend to stay on for more hours,” she says. “Lighting in the master bedroom, bath and upstairs is all new including the recessed cans. We used adjustable LED fixtures to allow us to highlight art or other features like the tub and vanity. They also installed new pendants over the kitchen bar from Lightology. Redoing the children’s bath was a simple project — mainly new paint, vanity and tile. “We went from a single sink to a double one to maximize functionality with very little difference in price,” she says. They also added crown molding to the kitchen, bedrooms and powder bath to give each room a tailored, finished feel. There’s always something to learn when you remodel a house. For Sarah Gandy, that lesson is simple. “Stick to classic, updated looks. We work on our homes over several years, so we don’t want to remodel a bathroom that will look dated when we’re ready to move,” she says. “I like our updates to look smart and fresh, so I stay away from trendy looks. I see ideas in magazines that I love but I know they will look dated in a few years so I don’t go that route.” Now that the work is done, the Gandys have put the house on the market so they can move on to their next project. At press time an option was pending on the home; we knew it wouldn’t last long.

Shade Tolerant Plants That Add Color and Texture to Hard to Grow Areas

ardens are all about light and the less light an area receives, the larger the leaf surface needs to be to capture those precious rays of sunlight for photosynthesis. Areas receiving filtered light or short windows of direct sun have this protected exposure due to the large trees shading the area. When gardening around and under large shade trees we not only experience competition for light, but also root competition for soil space, water and nutrients. We know it is impossible to grow impatiens plants under large trees without watering every single day.

The best choice for summer color is the begonia, which often dies from overwatering. Planting begonias in prepared soil among tree roots allows both to thrive since begonias prefer to dry out between watering. There are so many choices with begonias: bedding begonias, Dragon Wing™ begonias, Rex begonias, rhizomatous and cane begonias, all of which are perennial and can return from the roots. Bedding begonias with green leaves and pink or white flowers show up best in shaded gardens, while bronze leaves with red flowers show

up much better in more sunlight. Remember, when gardening in shaded areas, always use white or variegated foliage as white reflects the sunlight and moonlight back to the eye. Bronze leaves with red flowers or plants with dark foliage have no reflective capacity and just disappear into the shade. Caladiums provide colorful foliage to complement begonias as they grow from a tuber, making them the perfect candidate to thrive among tree roots. There are two types of caladiums: fancy leaf, which are heart shaped and need less than five to six hours of shade, and strap leaf or angel wing which can take full sun. When caladiums produce spathe type flowers they need to be cut down to the ground as this takes away from leaf production, which is why you are growing them. Peacock gingers, from the Kaempferia genus, are lovingly referred to as the hosta of the south. We do not have the winter dormancy and duration of chill to successfully support the northern hosta, so why not plant these precious, patterned pretties instead? Kaempferias grow from rhizomes and go dormant during the winter, normally January or February. Since they grow in deep shade instead of direct sun it takes longer for the soil to warm up for them to sprout. The rhizomes are why they thrive among the tree roots of our garden giants, as storage tubers hold water and nutrients but still require water if low rainfall 74 house& home | June 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

occurs. If you have Kaempferias in too much sun they will curl their leaves over the top of the plant for protection until the sun retreats. Kaempferias produce lilac or purple iridescent flowers throughout the summer. Hidden gingers, from the genus Curcuma, come in two separate groups. Curcuma alismatifolia is a sun lover and flowers throughout the season growing 12 to 24 inches tall. Curcuma Scarlet Fever is a late spring bloomer with flowers appearing before the foliage; it needs part shade, will grow two to four feet in height, and resembles a dwarf banana. Another early bloomer is the curcuma Chocolate Zebra; it takes a half day of sun and blooms throughout the summer. Alpinia nutans is another popular ginger; it will grow from 12 to 30 inches and even to six feet if not frozen. It has a spicy, scented foliage when crushed. This ginger rarely blooms because the flowers are produced on stalks the second spring and can’t have been damaged by frost. Get this beauty to bloom by planting it against the house underneath the eave of the roof and on a south or western exposure. I include this one because many people grow this ginger and don’t understand why it doesn’t bloom. Plants make us happy and allow us to be creative and in the moment, so take time to visit a nursery, pick up some pretties and enjoy!
