EASY SWEET AROMA Grow a Fragrant Garden Project Started With These Plants Story and photoS by JoShua Kornegay, owner of JoShua’S native plantS & garden antiqueS

hen you’re wanting a fragrance garden the first thing that comes to mind are roses, right? Sure they’re sweet smelling but there are many other plants to consider. Here’s a few of our favorites. “Angel’s Trumpet” (Brugmansia sueveolens) are a great choice. These offer a variety of long pendulous blooms up to 14” long in pinks, salmons, orange and the classic white p[pictured here. Around dusk they’re fully open and emit a most powerful heavy sweetness that can be picked up across the entire garden (even your neighbors.) This family of plants are very easy to grow in dappled shade or mostly sun in almost any soil and bloom several cycles per year. Another ol’ fashioned favorite is “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” (Brunfelsia florabunda.) A southern classic shrub-like woody perennial for even the brownest of thumbs. Mostly a Spring bloomer, you will never forget the spectacular

show and sweet aroma. The three colors on the same plant, white, lavender and purple are stunning. (Hence the name) and can grow to an 8foot by 8 foot mound. Responds well to hard pruning if your space doesn't allow. Best for last, “Almond Verbena” (Aloysia virgata) forms a large shrub or small tree to 15 feet or so. Usually pruned hard or sculpted into a more practical size and shape and fine in ordinary soils. Practically a year-round bloomer of 3” spikes of tiny white flowers makes this a must as it also attracts butterflies , bees and hummingbirds. Try these if you’re a big fan of sweet smells. Plus, they’re much easier to keep than roses ! Remember, work less, enjoy more! Joshua’s Native Plants & Garden Antiques, Inc. can be found at 502 West 18th, 713-862-7444, joshuasnativeplants.net.

TEX MEX: TRADITIONS, INNOVATIONS AND COMFORT FOODS FROM BOTH SIDES OF THE BORDER
ith the uptick in cooking at home, these new Texas cookbooks will come in handy when you start craving new eats. From comfort food recipes to swanky chef-driven restaurant creations and downright healthy options, you may not miss going out. At least for now.
COOK LIKE A LOCAL Chris Shepherd’s Cook Like a Local debut cookbook, a true locavore love letter, is a collaboration between Shepherd, author/cook Kaitlyn Goalen and photographer Julie Soefer. The 100-plus-page book is full of recipes divided into six chapters of Houston’s ethnic cuisine staples and insights into some of the city’s top chefs. Korean braised goat and dumplings, cha ca-style snapper, green papaya salad, banh mi sandwich, Vietnamese crawfish, even Shepherd’s version of nachos grace the beautiful pages.
TEXAS SEAFOOD: A COOKBOOK AND COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE Texas Seafood showcases the expertise of longtime fishmongers and chefs PJ and “Apple” Srimart Stoops. Find familiar fish like Red Snapper along with little-known finfish and tunas, bivalves, crabs, and other “bycatch” among our regional bounty. Expect a primer on sourcing and advice on discerning quality, plus simple, delectable recipes, many infused with the flavors of Apple’s Thai heritage. Steamed curried crab, crispy white shrimp, and grilled escolar with green mango salad are a few ways to savor the best of the Gulf coast. 16 house& home | June 2020 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
Houston Cooks by Francine Spiering
If you can’t get to a Tex Mex restaurant, chef Ford Fry’s newest cookbook is a godsend. Houston-born Fry has an empire of restaurants in Atlanta and several in Houston including Superica Tex Mex in the Heights. Co-written by Jessica Dupuy, the whimsically designed cookbook includes all the usual suspects and new surprises. Expect basics like chile paste, salsas and sauces, retro standards (puffy tostado con queso, tacos, cheese enchiladas) and breakfast options, dessert recipes and fun cocktails, too. Cheers to Tex Mex at home!
HOUSTON COOKS In Figure 1 Publishing’s new cookbook written by Francine Spiering, top Houston restaurant chefs spill the beans on their popular recipes. The cookbook offers a glimpse into the Houston restaurant scene and highlights our award-winning chefs. Anticipate a wide variety of dishes like pork belly with sweet potato hash and guajillo sauce from Field & Tides, sweet corn bisque with crabmeat from Common Bond, and towering chocolate cherry pie from The Dunlavy. Every one of them mouthwatering. A portion of proceeds goes to Second Servings of Houston.

RECIPE
CHOCOLATE CHERRY PIE FROM THE DUNLAVY A gorgeous and ambitious dessert from chef Jane Wild for Mother’s Day or any day!
INGREDIENTS Pie Crust 2 cups all purpose flour (divided plus extra for dusting) 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup butter, cut into small cubes, chilled 1 large egg beaten with 1 tablesppon water for brushing 2 tablespoons turbinado sugar Chocolate Coated Cherries 1 heaping cup semi-sweet chocolate chips 3 tablespoons butter, cut into 1-inch cubes 2 tablespoons light corn syrup 1/3 cup Stout beer 3 tablespoons heavy cream 1 lb. dark sweet cherries, pitted Topping 2 cups heavy cream 2/3 cup confectioners’ sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract or vanilla paste 1 cup shaved chocolate (or cocoa powder), or to taste 1 to 2 cherries, for garnish
METHOD
Pie crust In a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine 1 cup flour, sugar, and salt. Add butter, a little at a time, mixing on low speed. Once all the butter has been added, increase speed to medium and mix until crumbly. Add the remaining 1 cup flour and mix for 2 to 3 minutes, scraping down the sides of the bowl. Add 1/4 cup ice-cold water and mix for another 2 minutes. Transfer dough to a floured work surface and shape it into a ball. Wrap it in plastic wrap and chill for 1 hour in the refrigerator.
18 house& home | June 2020 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
Preheat oven to 325°F. Working quickly, roll out dough to about 12 inches in diameter on a floured work surface, then place it in a 9-inch pie plate. Crimp the edges. Using a fork, prick the base, then chill for 20 minutes in the freezer. Place a piece of parchment paper over the base of the unbaked crust, then add pie weights, dried beans, or uncooked rice. Bake for 20 to 30 minutes, until crust is lightly golden. Remove pie weights and paper. Brush the crimped edges with egg wash and sprinkle with turbinado sugar. Bake for another 10 minutes or until crust is golden. Set aside to cool.
Chocolate-covered cherries In the top pan of a double boiler, combine chocolate chips, butter, corn syrup, and stout and set over gently simmering water for 1 to 2 minutes, until chocolate has melted. Stir in cream. Remove from heat. Add cherries and stir to coat well. Pour mixture into the baked pie crust and refrigerate for at least 4 hours and up to 24 hours, until set.
Topping Prepare the topping just before serving. In a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, whip cream, sugar, and vanilla on high speed for 2 to 3 minutes, until soft peaks form. Top pie with cream and garnish with shaved chocolate (or dust with cocoa powder). Finish with a cherry or two on top. Pour what’s left of the stout into a pint glass and enjoy. Local Designer adds Color and Style to Hyde Park Townhome
SPLASH OF PERSONALITY
by robin barr SuSSman photography by Julie Soefer
L
ike so many multi-level townhomes being built all over Houston, the interior of the Hyde Park home that designer Pamela O’Brien recently transformed had the ubiquitous white, gray and black palette. Her client’s goal was to create a warm setting for entertaining extended family and friends, while incorporating bright colors for a feel-good vibe. The four-level townhome, built in 2017 by Carnegie Custom Homes, is a majestic space with soaring ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows and an open kitchen, but it needed a designer’s touch. “Our client had very little furniture, so we learned more about her and incorporated design elements on trend from High Point Market that fit her personality and style,” said Pamela O’Brien of Pamela Hope Designs in Houston.

The living area has neutral tones in the kitchen with splashes of teal and red in the furnishings, sofa and throw pillows. The teal painted coffered ceiling ties the space together. 21

ACCENT PAINT
STYLISH ACCESSORIES
The young professional liked handmade things and she collected mugs, tea towels and linens. “Boho-chic is a good way to describe her style and color is a part of her life,” said O’Brien. She used saturated colors throughout the home starting with deep teal paint on the generous built-in bookshelves and the detailed dropped coffer in the living room area. The teal bookshelves sport beautiful books beloved by the client, “which is kind of like adding a rainbow here and there,” added O’Brien.
A trendy carved wood chest in neutral tones was added to a side wall accented with a bold Yellow Hat Black Wiggle Ribbon piece by artist Rebecca Raney that actually is a handdyed Crepe de Chine silk scarf. “It’s a little on the Bohemian side, which balances the acrylic painting on the other wall.” The bar nook in the kitchen area with glass cabinets for wines was accessorized making it fresh and updated. O’Brien added two strikingly curvy vases made of satin brass and gold. “We are starting to see more round shapes like this. They punctuate the small space like a piece of jewelry.” A stunning Moravian star light fixture was already in the half bath on the second floor, so O’Brien installed impressionistic rainbow hued wallpaper—bold and colorful like a field of yellow and orange wildflowers. Instant happiness! “Now, when you walk through this stylish townhome it is hard not to smile. It was lovely, stately and serious. Now it is chic and whimsical,” O’Brien said. Most importantly, her client agrees.
KEY FURNITURE PIECES Starting with the first-floor entryway, which leads to the stairwell of the main house, O’Brien went from a neutral palette to bursts of color throughout the home. “We mimicked neutral colors in the chic chevron tile while adding bright accents. We chose a quiet tone for the custom bench but went bold with big purple pillows and a soft entry rug with splashes of purple and pink,” said O’Brien. White walls came alive with a collection of black and white photographs from the owner’s travels. “In the black, white and grey kitchen, we added bright pink bar stools that are a lot of fun.” The teal dropped coffer ceiling in the living room was balanced with an equal amount of color on the large sectional sofa. The midcentury modern coffee table is a standalone piece you notice when you walk into the house. “The way it is pieced together with stone wrapped in brass adds an edgy handmade style to the large room,” O’Brien said. 22 house& home | June 2020 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
SPRING TRENDS FROM HIGH POINT MARKET Designer Pamela O’ Brien (pamelahopedesigns.com) shares details on her use of trends for the townhome. For information about High Point Market, visit highpointmarket.org. Note that the spring market is currently postponed.
Color trends: Blue and green – we used both and settled on a lot of teal. Accessory trends: Overlay/inlay – the carved chest, the intricate pattern of the coffee table with the brass rimmed stone top, the scroll overlay on the drum table near a swivel chair. Pattern trends: Geometrics – the chevron flooring in the entry and diamond stair runner, the squared off design of the entry bench, the pink fabric bar stools, the design of the dining chair backs (in carving, overlays and inlays and patterns for fabrics and wallpaper.) Accents: Hints of gold/satin brass accents – in lighting, accessories and lamps, even a touch in the embroidery in our sheer draperies in the living room. Curved shapes – the circle in the carved chest detail and hardware, the coffee table, the round swivel chair and overlaid drum table. Brown furniture makes an appearance – we refinished a family piece to serve as a sofa table and selected a warm, light walnut for the dining chairs. Sculptural table bases – the dining table, the coffee table, and the side tables have something interesting happening at the base, even if it’s just a shelf. Mash-ups of interesting materials – lacquered wood and metal side table, metal and stone coffee table, framed scarf as art, glass and metal vases and urns, candle holders made of metal tubes. Touch of Mid Century and Post Modern – color, asymmetry, mixed materials, a bit of glam in the dining chair backs, coffee table design, the gold over silver patterning in the drum table and mod/funky light fixtures throughout. [Left] The entry hallway leads to a stairwell. [Right] The kitchen features brass accents and a festive fabric on the barstools.

ARTSY RANCH Lovely to See You Again By SuSie Tommaney | PhoToS By Gary Zvonkovic
T
here’s no denying this Texas family had wanderlust in its heart — they had traveled to exotic locales like India and Africa and Indonesia — though their roots were firmly planted in the sprawling countryside not too far from Houston. But when they called on Adams Architects, Inc. to update the family ranch headquarters, while also creating a space for the vast collection of art they had collected along the way, something magical happened. “The original house did not acknowledge its place,” says Joseph H. Adams, principal/partner along with Gail Hood Adams, noting that the home didn’t embrace its magnificent surroundings with century-old live oaks, horses and cattle. Borrowing a page from his childhood in Muleshoe where the children clamored to sleep on the back porch, the Adamses designed a sophisticated 100-foot veranda along the home’s north side. Instantly the family home became one with its surroundings. “It is our motive, it is our constant goal, to acquaint these
26 house& home | June 2020 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
owners [who are] sometimes very distant from their beautiful property. To ingrain the architecture with the property,” says Joseph. “This is the bedroom wing of the house. You can walk out anytime night or day, your guests can walk out; [it’s] a community convivial space. They have a spring-fed lake in the distance, the horses are grazing in the foreground, cattle in the distance, on the cool side of the house.” As for the home itself, Joseph says they added considerably to the structure and totally remodeled the domestic part. “It was a complete, almost from scratch, renovation.” In creating a space for the family’s art collection, the Adamses designed a separate museum that is positioned in concert with the existing home in a sort of lock and key configuration. “We are very sensitive to the spirit of the place, [it has] eveything to do with the sun, the breezes, particularly when we’re dealing with an art museum with museum quality light. “Texas has a an abundance of natural light; we have to tame it. [We call on] indirect, what we call benign light,
Joseph Houston Adams says they treated the red and copper la cornue exhibition kitchen as an art installation. For the custom copper stair railing, Gail Hood Adams says they provided the fabricators with full-sized templates.
which Texas has in abundance. To give our client the quality gallery feel and professional museum-quality spaces takes it above and beyond a room to stick collectibles in,” says Joseph. The couple studied under Louis I. Kahn (the acclaimed architect who infused light as a theme for Fort Worth’s Kimbell Art Museum) while at University of Pennsylvania. Joseph tells us that Kahn did his own thing during the era of Modernism. “He was more about the quality of the light. The quality of the spirit of the place. He is kind of our artistic forefather. “If it’s going to be integral with this house it has to be close but not too close. Separate but not too separate. And in use. The owner takes a cup of coffee from his breakfast table and walks through India and walks through Africa and it’s a building that is part of the musing day-to-day life of this residential structure. It’s a museum/residence/collected memories. We didn’t want it to be sterile and ‘look but don’t touch.’” Stone quarried from Mexico and cut to a “T” by master craftsmen was used to form the elliptical arches, a motif that is carried through in the backlit limestone arches of the wine room as well as the custom copper stair railing near the la cor28 house& home | June 2020 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
nue exhibition kitchen in the galleries. “We worked that out bit by bit, rod by rod, and gave them full-sized templates,” says Gail, adding that they worked directly with the metal fabricators. Those elliptical arches also hold a secret: “[They] are doing work, subdividing the galleries, they are enfilade, in file, as you walk through them. Those arches are hollow, bringing up air conditioning from down below,” says Joseph. “They are reexhaling air out of those spaces.” As architects and planners for this project, the Adamses thought they were finished once Kenneth Wuensche & Company had finished construction and James Williams had selected the interiors. But no, there was still one more task. For a long time the collection had been in storage, not easily accessible to the very family that had fallen in love with those objects long ago. The homeowners basically said, “You’re the architect, you know the space, who better to install the art?” “We had one exciting day when we were unpacking boxes,” says Gail. In the end, the couple arranged the artworks primarily by region, though visitors will discover a hollowed out canoe from a tribe in Africa over the doorway. “That’s actually
[LEFT] The stag heads that flank the French buffet are actually wood carvings from Germany. [RIGHT] The exhibition kitchen contains a large rotisserie in the wall, perfect for entertaining in the art galleries. [BELOW] The triangular windows of the gallery spaces face due north

The high triangular window is behind you, filling the room with blue light. The south is shaded by an oak tree.” So in designing the Museum Residence, not only did the Adamses reconnect the family with the flora and fauna of their expansive estate, they reunited them with the curated memories of their travels. This is the third project from the Adamses’ oeuvre that Houston House & Home Magazine has covered from their 40 year career as architects. While Adams Architects, Inc. is looking back and reflecting on four decades of work, one common principle stands out: their gift for identifying genius loci, a location’s distinctive atmosphere. “Every place has an essence,” says Joseph. “And if you live in that place, communing with that place, and you miss the essence, shame on me the architect and shame on you, the homeowner.”
