The Round Top Antiques Fair is just around the corner: Oct. 2-5. And we don’t want to miss it. As you’ll see in the Special Section within, the fair really spans six small towns; all located about a 90-minute drive from Houston. Friends who have a weekend home in one of the nearby towns, say some of the tents go up a week in advance, and they swear by the old adage: The early bird gets the worm! I went up there a few years back and found a wonderful French sofa for $60 in the town of Warrenton. I remember rounding the corner and walking into a temporary stall. A rather large frame of a man lounging on a petite looking but obviously sturdy frame caught my eye. I liked the Frenchdesigned legs, the gorgeous aging patina of the frame . . . but, quite frankly, not much else. The man sat upright, and the negotiations for the sofa began at $100. Of course, I didn’t come prepared like those in the know do. I had to return the next day with a rental UHaul. Most who make the trek up to the Round Top area always go in a large truck or pull a U-Haul. My $60 ultimately turned into a oneof-a-kind $700 investment. I had my upholsterer reinforce the springs and ready it for a long down cushion; all of which was upholstered in a light green patterned linen.

If you’re planning to spend a few days, which you well can do, think about booking one of the bed and breakfasts there. There’s the Vintage Round Top and Rachel Ashwell’s Prairie, to name two. We’re featuring the homeowners of another B&B – Blackbird Farm -- in their own kitchen on page 38. Their rental cabins are sweet! Country antiques can call any venue “home.” Check out the fabulous seaside condo in Galveston by Avondale Design Studio on page 48. I assure you, you’ll be inspired. Happy shopping, y’all. Susan

Cason Graye Homes Goes the Extra Mile for Customers
W
hen Bryan Phillips speaks of his custom home building business, you often hear him say: Everything is open for discussion. This philosophy underscores and drives each project, which focuses on client-centric excellence that begins at the very first conversation and continues well after the homeowner’s move-in date. Phillips maintains the high quality of his homes by limiting the number of custom home starts each year. “We average starting about 10 to 15 custom homes each year. That number lets me manage the growth of the company easily and keep pricing reasonable,” he says. “Also, I have a qualified team of construction managers and that workload gives them about three to five custom projects to manage each year. My team and I then can give our customers the highest level of attention.” The Cason Graye team distinguishes itself through education and professionalism. Phillips earned the Graduate Master Builder certification through the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), a designation received by veterans of the homebuilding industry who have taken advanced courses offered through NAHB. “For me personally, it meant I learned from the experts rather than through trial and error,” says Phillips. Other members of the team also continually work toward professional achievement designations. “Ensuring each and every home utilizes as many energy efficient products as possible is important to my company as well as to me personally,” says Phillips. “My wife and I are building a home in Bellaire right now and, while she’s excited about new flooring and countertops and cabinets, the features I’m most looking forward to enjoying in my new home are the insulation, the windows, HVAC efficiency and home automation,” he says with a laugh. In meeting with clients, I provide the facts to help them make the best decisions. For instance, when you are focused on energy efficiency, you reap 10 house& home | August 2013 | www.house and home online. com
BY DEBI BRYANT
several benefits. First of all, it will reduce the overall operating expense of the house, and everything—the walls, the floors, all the infrastructure of the home— will last longer with high-grade foam insulation, an excellent window package, in addition to air-conditioners with high SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating) numbers.” Cason Graye welcomes the ideas and desires of its clients, including the use of innovative materials. “We want to go the extra mile for our clients. If we don’t have it, we’ll go out and find it,” says Phillips. This attitude shows up repeatedly in all phases of the relationship. While not a design-build firm, Cason Graye helps its clients and prospects throughout the design process. For instance, if you don’t have an architect, he works with several firms that he can highly recommend. Cason Graye provides a dedicated person to handle service calls once the homeowners have moved in -- to take care of all the little stuff that gets discovered once they’ve actually lived there. It includes access to the Cason Graye representative who takes meetings with vendors and subcontractors in lieu of the homeowners. Phillips got into the housing business while still at the University of Houston. “I took a job with a large production builder during my final year of college, even though I knew nothing about building homes. That first week, I fell in love with the business. I told myself that I will do this forever. My dad had been in business for himself, so I knew I eventually wanted to own my own company. So, we saved our money for a few years and in 2004 made the leap to start Cason Graye,” Phillips says. “When it was time for us to start a family, my wife had come up with the name “Cason Graye” as a boy’s name. Three daughters later, it was still unused. So when we first started out with the business, she suggested we use it as the company name.” And that’s when Cason Graye Homes became a new addition to the Phillips family.
Recipe for Excellence While Cason Graye, first and foremost, dedicates itself to fulfilling client requests, whenever they look for advice in choosing their kitchen appliances, Phillips jumps at the opportunity to recommend Thermador. “Thermador has great price points, saving anywhere from 20 to 25 percent over other luxury brands. Plus they make phenomenal looking products that consistently earn top rankings,” he says. The cover kitchen features a complete Thermador appliance package; the refrigerator is paneled to create a seamless look, and the range is a featured focal point. Thermador actually receives the Phillips family’s highest endorsement: Its appliances will be going into their new Bellaire home.
THIS PAGE FROM TOP: Reclaimed wood floors and a beamed ceiling add warmth and structural interest to the family room. A curvilinear wall opens into the formal dining room with its Venetian plaster finish. Letting in Houston’s natural light, a picture window looks out over a 700-square-feet outdoor living room. In redoing the kitchen, Cason Graye opened up a wall to make the kitchen curve around a corner and consequently almost doubled its size. Custom tile work for the backsplash adds personality to the space. This Cason Graye custom home won several awards (including Best of Show and People’ Choice) in the 2012 Bellaire New Home Showcase. With five bedrooms and 5-1/2 baths, it offers over 5,900 square feet of living space. The front door opens onto a tower foyer showcasing an elegant spiral staircase.

TASTEMAKER
JILL BROWN
This pair of lamps is a one-of-a-kind, custom-made example of what Brown creates, utilizing early 1900 plaster. The shades are Belgium linen.
Filling the Rafters at Brown an interview with Jill Where do you find these coveted lighting fixtures? I mostly shop in France, Italy, Belgium and sometimes Holland. I rent a car and just go. I know a little French and can get by. I lived in Belgium when my late husband, Foster, worked for a company there. It was then that I started to send various kinds of items back to the states to designers. Luckily I could drive a stick shift and so I would get up at 3 in the morning and just take off. It was then I developed a passion for lights.
16 house& home | August 2013 | www.house and home online. com
Lighting connoisseur Jill Brown owns the little shop on the corner of Ferndale and Alabama in Houston’s Upper Kirby District. It’s simply called “Brown.” As you walk up the few steps to the shop -which looks a bit like a citified country store with a broad porch and large lanterns flanking the double doors -- and enter, you’ll see large evidence of Jill’s indisputable skill at finding the best of the best in lighting. Lamps, chandeliers, sconces, lanterns . . . you name it, she’s got it.
How were you able to transfer your passion to Houston? Foster’s company had its U.S. headquarters in Houston, so when we moved back, I became one of Skelton St John’s dealers. What do you look for when buying lights? I stay away from what’s trendy. Instead I instinctively look for and buy examples of the best of the period. I especially like Italian Moderne and and Louis XIV and XV styles. I prefer to buy timeless classics that can be passed on. Approximately 70 percent of our inventory is one-of-a-kind. I bring my picks back home and have them rewired and reconditioned if needed.
17
ABOVE: Hand-made, based on an antique. LEFT: Re-issue of an old Paris Flea market find. RIGHT: Hand-made American lantern, 18th century-inspired. BELOW: Re-issues, based on antique originals.
When did you open your own shop? The shop opened in ’06. When did you catch the bug for collecting? It started when I was a junior in high school when I started going to country auctions in Ohio with my mother. I was mostly interested in pressed, depression and Viking glass. Later, I worked for a department stores – in Ohio, Texas and Massachusetts – in the gourmet cooking section where they gave me full reign to buy what I found appealing. I don’t care for trinkets. I have an affinity for things with a purpose. Advice to novice collectors? Buy with your heart and buy original -the real stuff.

Getting Personal What do you read? Shelter magazines and political blogs. What style do you gravitate toward? American shaker, Pennsylvania Dutch. What can you not live without? My sons, Sam and John. Other than European shopping excursions, where do you travel? I go back to Ohio frequently to see family. I also love northern Michigan; I have fond memories of spending time there as a child. Other than light fixtures, what do you like to collect? I love didactic things . . . school items. Old school charts. Old easels. Abacuses. Pigeon diplomas – given out when raising homing pigeons was a sport. I like agricultural things. -- SF

PROFESSIONAL TRUST Why Budget for Outside Help? BY JOETTA MOULDEN • PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANET LENZEN
When Denise Strittmatter called me to select colors and paint the entire interior of their home, I did not know that her husband Mike had already checked me out on the Internet and looked at my “before/after” pix. He advised budgeting my services into their overall plan to ensure quality. Since they asked me and wondered what they should put in their niche, one of the first things I recommended was filling in the dustcatching niche above the dining room with Sheetrock and painting the stair railing and spindles. option. I also suggested painting the stair hand rails “Protegé Bronze” gloss enamel, which not only satisfied her dislike of the stain color but it coordinated with the existing floor and nearby dining room, too. The trim was repainted the existing trim color, Benjamin Moore “White” interior room gloss enamel. TIP: Paint is inexpensive and consistently gives you the most “bang for your buck.” The dining room walls above the chair rail were painted Sherwin Williams “Kilim Beige” and below the chair rail were painted Sherwin Williams “Latte” to coordinate with the master bath colors (See "Palette Perfection,” my April 2013 Before/After column.) Having just gone through a recent transformation in their bath, the couple did not hesitate to paint their dining room. Denise not only likes the continuity but the paint warms up the space and adds interest. “Unlike Mike, I felt overwhelmed by our first meeting.” Denise says. “You had such vision not only for the bath but the entire house and your visit encompassed so much more than just

choosing paint colors -- thank goodness!” she adds with a laugh. Denise was ecstatic that the changes would be dramatic and done within their budget. She loved receiving my emailed photos because they helped her envision the space. “At first I could not wrap my arms around all your suggestions,” she explains. “Over time, I came to understand that you really were right about everything!” One of her favorite changes was painting the stair railings and spindles. “While I didn’t have a problem painting the spindles black, I just could not visualize painting the hand railings,” Denise says. “Mike was the “steady one” who encouraged me to do everything on your list. The change actually made them “pop” and the stairs now look like a custom feature. It was much less expensive than adding wrought iron spindles, which would have busted our budget!” Another change she really liked involved the rug --and did not cost a cent. “Removing the too-small rug was genius,” says Denise. Using a tape measure, I showed Denise that because of the shape of the room, a larger rug would have curled up the back wall. TIP: To avoid being an uneven trip hazard, a dining room rug should be large enough for the table to fit on top of the rug with additional space behind the chairs. My feeling is with food and drink in a dining room, why have a rug at all -- (especially if there is a rug anchoring the nearby living room.) And would the couple recommend hiring help? “Trust the professionals! You always take the homeowners’ individual tastes in mind and base your recommendations on that, not just your own preferences. Everyone should budget for your services,” she concludes.

Laying Down the Facts On Rugs:
STYLES & TRENDS BY MARSHA CANRIGHT
This is a hand-crafted “Rock Garden” patterned wool and viscose rug by Martha Stewart. The room is by Interior Designer Pamela Hope. (Photo courtesy of Pamela Hope Designs) 28 house& home | August 2013 | www.house and home online. com
Once upon a time a floor was just a floor but no more. Now ground-up design is a common practice and options for the ‘fifth wall’ have never been so plentiful. As the trend continues for hard surface flooring throughout Houston homes, area rugs are popping up underfoot in the city’s traditional, contemporary and more eclectic arrangements. This new generation of area rugs comes in brilliant and neutral colors, new material combinations like sisal and wool, woven vinyl, and manmade materials featuring a playful take on a classical motif. “A wonderful rug can change the character of a room,” says Valerie Roberts with Dazzling Décor, a division of Roberts Carpet and Fine Floors in Houston. “For homes with a hard surface flooring throughout, an accent rug is the natural design step. It can define the space, provide warmth for a broad expanse of wood or stone flooring, and stamp an imprint of your own inner designer,” she says. The newest trends include “antiqued” or washed Orientals in surprising colors, and at the spectrum’s other end, area rugs in shades of gray,” says Houston designer Pamela O’Brien.
29
ABOVE: Interior Designer Pamela Hope chose this hand-crafted, plush-pile Indian wool rug by Surya for a client’s home. (Photo courtesy of Pamela Hope Designs) LEFT: Environmentally friendly sisal and jute rugs are relatively inexpensive and are at home with both informal and formal décor.
She prefers the new patchwork rugs made from older, worn kilims that are cut to salvage the best pieces and stitched together in interesting designs. Sometimes the rugs are dyed in vibrant colors like turquoise. O’Brien has purchased several for clients and one for her Houston home. “These kilim rugs are a piece of history with a fresh new look which works well in contemporary and transitional designs,” she says. Donna Jarnigan of Houston-based LacyBoone Design sees area rugs as a way to tie together the clean, paired down look that her clients want. “For me, a home is much more interesting when it looks like it has been gathered over a period of years, which also applies to rugs,” says Jarnigan. “It’s true that some clients are strictly traditional and others only contemporary but the majority like to mix periods and styles for a collected look, like pairing a traditional piece of furniture with a contemporary piece of art,” explains Jarnigan. Sometimes people are so in love with their floors, they don’t want to see them covered. “A couple I work with have gorgeous marble floors and the husband did not want to cover them in any way, not even the stairs,” says Raquel Henderson of Rubin’s Custom Rugs in Houston. When his wife slipped on the stairs, he changed his mind and the couple ordered a custom runner. “We made a stair runner out of a tone on tone piece of carpet removing some of the elements and inserting a perfect navy that we used as a three-inch border. It brought the area together in a beautiful way which complemented the marble,” Henderson says. “Now they say the once-dull stairway is a work of art.” Customized rugs make truly unique designs possible. Another customer, a pilot, brought an element joy to the family area by ordering a two-color bordered rug with a plane carved in the field, says Henderson.
Designers agree that rug selection is a reflection of individual preferences. Here are a few trends to watch: • Colors: Soft and vibrant blues and grays. Also spice orange and yellow for accents. • New designs use classic motifs such as swirls, damask, Greek Keys or quatrefoils, enlarged and set as a border or in the rug’s field. • Flat weaves add pops of color and are extremely durable for entries and kitchens while soft textures are still most popular in the bedroom. • Rugs made of bamboo silk or viscose. Blends of fabrics of fering the plush feel of wool with a sheen. • High-end woven vinyl floor mats in rich colors by Chilewich.

Oriental, Persian, Kilim and Tribal are investments that pay of f with long life and sustained beauty. • Larger rugs, appropriate size for the dining table and chairs or for a conversational area.
What is your design philosophy? To guide the client as they move through the process of change, taking the client and expanding their understanding of space, dimension and function in ways that they hadn’t considered before. How do your clients' tastes or personalities influence design projects? Each project should highlight the individual’s needs, wants and desires as we aesthetically and functionally increase the usability and sensitivity of the space. What's the first thing you ask a client when starting a project? My favorite thing is to ask the client what they don’t like or want to embrace during this process of change. What initially drew you to interior design? Color—its potential, impact and ability to transform both a space and a person’s point of view.

How can a potential client know if a particular designer is a good fit for their project? I think that it’s like a shoe—if it fits, so does the foot. There is a comfort and an ease in the exchange, process, and relationship as it unfolds. If it doesn’t work, you will know very quickly.

The best time to buy a refrigerator is between now and October when distributors make way for newer models. With all the options out there, we’ve narrowed down a few top trends and popular models. Among the newest features found on today’s refrigerators are technological upgrades, according to Celia Vrnak, integrated marketing director of Factory Builder Stores. People are looking for models -- such as Samsung, Electrolux and LG -- that have an LCD screen with productivity-focused applications or “apps.” “The LCD screen is like a digital version of the refrigerator message board. You can pull up a calendar, display pictures, leave notes and with the WiFi connection, you can even check the weather or stream music.” Digital temperature settings and new electronic controls are also available in many of the high-end brands. “There are more options on the dispenser where you can preset and control settings,” says Danielle Raper, showroom consultant for Ferguson

Kitchen and Bath. For example, you can preset the dispenser to pour half a cup of water rather than a full cup.” Vrnak notes that GE has a hot water dispenser with four temperature settings from 90 to 185 degrees. Jenn-Air’s new integrated built-in collection has four-bin temperature settings – for deli, produce, meat and a quick chill-for precise control. Refrigerators are also becoming increasingly customized and many people are using refrigerator and freezer drawers that allow you to integrate them into existing cabinetry. The SubZero B1-36UG over-and-under with glass door offers large refrigerated storage, plus a convenient rollout freezer drawer. According to Jackie Hager, showroom operations manager of Morrison Supply, refrigerator drawers can go in an island. “You could have a beverage center under the counter refrigerator for wet bars and game rooms.” “Many people like to put produce in there or items for the kids; items they don’t want in the main refrigerator,” says Raper. Column refrigerators are also gaining traction. For ultimate flexibility and customization in kitchens, Thermador offers the Freedom Collection fresh food and freezer columns, in addition to wine columns. The columns can be placed in areas where the home cooks need them the most. For example, the fresh food column might be placed in a whole different location than the freezer. Thermador offers 24-inch and 30-inch fresh food columns; 18-inch, 24-inch and 30-inch freezer columns, and 18-inch and 24inch wine columns. In terms of looks, Hager says Morrison Supply’s best selling high-end refrigerators are either stainless steel or cabinet front and panel-ready, which creates a seamless appearance. Whirlpool offers a white or black glass finish. Lower- to middle-end refrigerators favor French door refrigerators with doors opening from the center and featuring a bottom freezer drawer. SubZero’s French door refrigeration is popular because of its look and the functional benefits. SubZero has a new built-in French door refrigerator that has two 18-inch doors so you can open just one door or both. Therefore, it’s great for narrower spaces. Country Cooking IN JERRY AND JOAN’S GALLEYSTYLE BARN KITCHEN B Y S U S A N F O X About a mile or so down an old Texas farm road in Ellinger, just around the corner from the famous Czech bakery called Hruska’s -- well known for their kolaches and breads – and just beyond a swinging iron gate of roosting blackbirds, is a horse barn that Joan and Jerry Herring call home. The Herrings own Blackbird Farm, a bed and breakfast located only minutes from the small town of Round Top – home to one of the country’s most acclaimed antique fairs. Houstonians make the trek to browse and buy every spring and fall (October 2-5). Whether the nearby countryside is dotted with dealer tents or nothing but tall grasses and a rolling landscape offering some of the most beautiful sunsets ever, the Herrings likely can be found in their tree-house-like kitchen. They got so comfortable living in a smaller space that the couple decided to stay put. “Because of the size of our home, we are in a sense always in the kitchen,” says Joan Herring. “Our specialties are omelets and frittatas made with farm-fresh eggs, cooked to order. We even have a little bell to ring as we announce ‘order up,’” she adds with a laugh. “We also make fresh salsa with the tomatoes, onions and jalapenos from our garden. We chop up all the ingredients, add fresh lime juice and sea salt. It tastes so good when it’s fresh,” says Joan Herring. Seaside Country
“The drapery fabrics reflect the colors of the sea in rich teal for the public spaces as well as a soft aqua for the master bedroom.” —Ben Johnston
Design Team Dives into a Very Custom condo Project in Galveston BY SUSAN FOX PHOTOGRAPHY BY BEN HILL
H
oustonian Jean Hancock Chernosky decided a while back to trade the country scene for a spectacular high-rise Gulf view. But after she sold the family ranch in a town just outside of San Antonio, she suddenly realized she wasn’t quite ready to say goodbye to the Texas Hill Country. With her ranch décor and country memories all packed up and piled high in three different Houston storage units, she had a thought. A very good idea, in fact. Why not transfer all the character and charm that her former home-away-from-home offered to her new coastal get-away? Could it be done? Apart from the obvious venue differences, her past treasures and furnishings did lean more toward the traditional, and her new 1,400-square-foot Diamond Beach condo in Galveston is contemporary. Enter the interior design team that makes dreams and high ideals happen: Ben Johnston and Kathryn Berardo with Avondale Design Studio, LLC. Not only did they exceed her expectations in the end by giving her a charming seaside country condo, they went into the job with a strategy. After visiting the two-bedroom and two-bath condo in Galveston, “we began the process of going through all her storage units. That meant we needed to unpack, photograph, measure and catalogue everything,” explains Johnston.
48 house& home | August 2013 | www.house and home online. com
The 1,400-square-foot condo features an open-room concept. The Avondale Design Studio team’s first take was to consider their client’s lifestyle needs. Their directive was to take furniture from a former ranch home and transition it to a beach community.

“We also evaluated what items would need repairs or could be ‘re-imagined’ in a fresh way. Once we finished that process, we then packed it all up again until we wanted to pull out what was needed.” “After completing a comprehensive space plan with Jean’s treasures in mind, we collaborated with numerous craftsmen to pick up select pieces. We had them make repairs, clean and refinish, repaint or reupholster whatever was necessary,” says Johnston. For example, a dressing bench and vanity were reupholstered in gorgeous fresh fabrics and reworked to feature mother-of-pearl trim – as a nod to the ocean. Mexican carved dining chairs gleamed with a bright, festive teal paint that again suits the beach scene. Johnston and Berardo chose a color palette of cream, gold and teal colors, accented with a warm orange and soft corals. They used more than 30 different types of fabrics and trims to create a richly layered oasis. “Drapery Ikat fabrics were used as a bridge to unite the sea views with the design plan,” says Johnston. “The drapery fabrics reflect the colors of the sea in rich teal for the public spaces as well as a soft aqua for the master bedroom.” The antique wool rugs Johnston and Berardo selected helped anchor the more traditional look desired by their client. They tied in the coastal look by looking for certain colors woven into the rug designs.
The homeowner’s baskets, spanning years of collecting, decorate the rich cabinetry in the kitchen and dining areas. Johnston and Berardo selected a teal color to unit the homeowner’s more traditional furnishings to her new beach venue.
“The logistical concerns at first had us nervous. But it ended up being one of our favorite projects in that we were entrusted with updating beloved family treasures and finding them a place in this beautiful and contrasting locale.” —Kathryn Berardo

Where new furnishings were needed, the design team shopped all over Houston. At La Maison, they found an inviting chair and ottoman featuring a straw base by Robert Allen. They also toured the various town markets associated with the Round Top Antiques Fair. And they found furniture artisans to design and make a few special custom pieces, such as the living room sleeper sofa and coffee table. Berardo says the project took about six months to complete. “Besides it being a rather daunting project, the logistical concerns at first had us nervous. But it ended up being one of our favorite projects in that we were entrusted with updating beloved family treasures and finding them a place in this beautiful and contrasting locale, she adds.
An antique Victorian daybed (above) gets dressed for the beach in this teal and green fabric. Leather belts used to raise the curtains lend a country feel to the room. The design team used a variety of fabrics and trims (left)to create a very layered look. 54 house& home | August 2013 | www.house and home online. com

Planter boxes were strategically placed on the balcony to hide any visible cars that might otherwise be seen. Pops of orange and turquoise used in the fabric and rug, along with the woven Brown Jordan patio pieces, bring life to a balcony that once was sterile and univiting. 300 ACRES OF ANTIQUES: A Round Top to Warrenton Weekend
F
or those who love quality antiques and high-end arts and crafts, the annual Round TopWarrenton “weekend” is likened to being almost a religious experience for interior designers, the most ardent collector and even first-time day-trippers. The gates to antique heaven open on Saturday, Sept. 21, through Sunday, Oct. 6, for their 46th season. Housed in barns, tents, open fields, town squares, and even a dance hall, more than 2,000 vendors from across the state and nation will offer their wares in six tiny towns and along the country roads that connect them, especially Hwy 237. Many of the field markets will be open for weeks, although venues like the Big Red Barn, the Original Round Top Antiques, and Marberger Farms will only open for the long weekend, Oct. 2-5, as is the custom. Along with what’s old and beautiful, there are new venues, beefed-up amenities, and most important: An overwhelming selection of high caliber furniture, art, jewelry, glassware, fixtures, stained glass, footstools, clocks, and the unexpected find that has made aficionados return year after year
for this Texas shopping tradition. Lone Star Gallery owners, Sterling and Kaci VanCoutren, are preparing for their second season at Warrenton. They purchased the properties for “the family business” from Sterling’s uncle, so their ownership is new but not their association with the event. “We are trying to balance the interests of women and men,” says VanCoutren. “We’ve got some great dealers and a superb selection of furniture, estate jewelry, Tiffany lamps, and certified Civil War artifacts.” In addition to the buildings cooled for antiques and tents for vintage items, the family is offering an air-conditioned area with beer and wine. “Women with reluctant husbands will have a nice place to park them, and hopefully, the men will also enjoy some of the offerings,” he says. VanCoutren says owners and vendors make a creative commitment to offer the best of the best for this gathering. GETTING TO ROUND TOP AND WHERE TO STAY

Round Top, the hub of the antique weekend, is located in Central Texas midway between Houston and Austin. Vendors are located in and round that city, Warrenton, Bertram, Shelby, Carmine and Fayetteville. Assistance with loading, hauling, shipping and storing treasures is readily available. A few venues charge an entry/parking fee. To get there from Houston, there are two main options: take I-10 to Hwy 36 to Bellville and turn onto Hwy 159 to Fayetteville connecting to Highway 237 for Warrenton, Round Top and Carmine. Or you can take 290 to Brenham, continue to Burton where you join Hwy 237. For those who wish to stay overnight, RV and limited rooms are available. Round top Chamber of Commerce has an online list of accommodations at www.roundtop.org/wsx_chamber_gro up_listing.php?group_id=lodging. Some visitors prefer to wander but for those with a destination in mind, here’s a sampler of 40 plus venues. A frequently updated listing of all spaces is available at www.antiqueweekend.com/calendar.htm.

From River Oaks to Round Top to Burton
DIXIE KENNEDY STARTED OUT LIFE IN THE CITY. THEN SHE DISCOVERED FARM AND RANCH REAL ESTATE. B Y J E A N N O R M A N • P H O T O G R A P H Y B Y R A Y M O N D A L D E R E T E The rolling hills punctuated with live oaks, post oaks and pin oaks in the pastoral landscape around Burton make the perfect backdrop for a simple Texas farmhouse. So when Dixie Kennedy set out seven years ago to design a farmhouse for her newly acquired farm in Washington County, she knew she didn’t want something fancy. If she’d wanted a more formal setting, she could hop in her SUV and drive to her house in River Oaks, an hour and 15 minutes away.
“I drew the farmhouse plan on a piece of paper,” she says. “It’s mainly one big room because people congregate around the kitchen. I just wanted a big open space so people could all be together in one room.” On one side of the great room, she drew a simple bathroom and two smallish bedrooms with ample windows to catch the pretty views. Having sold rural real estate for some 20 years in the Round Top/Burton/Brenham area (and beyond), she knew the value of Texas porches and how very pleasant they can be when there’s acreage surABOVE: The twig furniture on Dixie Kennedy’s front porch

Above the windows is a metal horse from the American Folk Art Museum in New York City. The wicker chair is from the Round Top Antiques Fair. Kennedy made the shell box from shells collected at Martha’s Vineyard.

rounding them for privacy. She drew a large front porch 12 feet deep for the front of her house and a 12-foot screened porch for the back of the house. Kennedy specified 10-foot ceilings to make the relatively small house feel larger. For walls, she wanted painted shiplap boards for a rustic look. And her front doors are classic Texana: two big, wide screen doors reminiscent of those at a sweet country store or dance hall. 70 house& home | August 2013 | www.house and home online. com

Knowing exactly what she wanted, she turned her drawing for the farmhouse over to a local general contractor, and her farmhouse became reality. But it wasn’t quite all that easy: “I had to clear the entire property of underbrush before I could build,” she says. In addition to the farmhouse, she built a small pond at the front of her property, stocked it with bass and catfish and lined it with clusters of Louisiana irises, ready to burst forth in bloom any day.

EYE FOR DESIGN AND REAL ESTATE
ABOVE: In the guest bedroom, the bed frame was once strung with rope
Kennedy is neither architect nor designer, but she does possess a keen eye for design. Reared in West University, she graduated from Bellaire High School and then moved to New York City, where she studied marketing and merchandising at Parsons School of Design. After a three-year stint working retail in New York, she returned to Texas in the 1980s. Living in Houston, she began selling real estate in the Washington and Fayette counties, beautiful rolling farmland sometimes referred to by Easterners as “the Connecticut of Houston.” Many country-loving Houstonians keep second homes there, as the area is a convenient, short drive on Highway 290. The area became popular with Houstonians in the 1950s and ’60s, especially when Miss Ima Hogg and her good friend, Faith Bybee, began buying historic Texas farmhouses from the 1840s-60s and restoring them. Kennedy started Kennedy Country Properties in Brenham and commuted between Houston and Brenham. She enjoys a faithful following of Houstonians who trust her to find the right country place for them. “I’ve developed a lot of lifelong friendships with people I have sold property to and for,” she says.
to hold the mattress. Now a wood panel supports the mattress which had to be custom made to fit the small bed.
FURNISHING THE FARMHOUSE
“I wanted a relaxed and comfortable country look,” Kennedy says. Nothing is fussy or over-designed. Sometimes a country look can devolve into clutter. “The knickknack look,” she calls it. There are no collections of geese in bonnets at her farmhouse; her furnishings and accessories are purposefully edited. Furnishing her farmhouse was easy as peach pie at the Burton Café. Most of Kennedy’s furnishings are antiques she has purchased over the years at the Round Top Antiques Fair and at antiques shops in the area. 72 house& home | August 2013 | www.house and home online. com
LOVING THE COUNTRY LIFE
Enthusiasm for country living comes easy to Kennedy. “I’ve always had a love of the outdoors and gardening,” she says. “I like the peacefulness and the wide open spaces of the country. I guess it’s the free spirit in me that loves it.” An avid perennial gardener, she has landscaped the grounds around her house with perennial flowers from the Antique Rose Emporium in nearby Independence. “People come from all over the world to go there,” she marvels. “My sisters and I go there every spring and take photos.” When she’s at the farm, does she ever get lonely? Doesn’t she miss the city, social events and sushi? “You can’t be lonely here,” she says, smiling. “There are so many activities —the Round Top Antiques Fair, the year-round concerts at the International Festival-Institute at Round Top, the Cotton Gin Festival in Burton in the fall.” For the last three years, Kennedy has chaired a barn dance fund-raiser, hosting 600 people at LaBahia Hall to help maintain the Burton Cotton Gin Museum, which receives supporting funds from the Smithsonian Institution. “It’s important that people know you don’t have to be a cowgirl or cowboy to come to the country,” she says. “There are a lot of diversified activities here.” With the party-friendly farmhouse she has built, she has plenty of friends and family who love to come over and sit on the porch or have dinner. At a recent gathering at her farmhouse, a friend from Houston teased, “Dixie, you’ve just built the world’s best bachelor pad.”

year-old and I love being outside, running and playing. Some of my fellow Hound Cross friends told me that I’m a pretty fly jumper and catcher. I really dig playing fetch, chasing birds and taking in all the excitement of the outdoors. It’s like doggy Playstation! I would make a great wingman for active dudes who like to hit the trail at Memorial Park (you could be the Starscky to my Hitch) or an awesome co-runner for gals who like to run around Rice U. Point is, I really need an active parent. If you’re single, I’m a total babe magnet, dude. And ladies, I’m a guy’s guy, so the fellas like to come up and give me low-fives. I’m sure we’d be a bigger happy family in no time. And trust me, I can keep up with it all. I only ask that you put the Hitch in your giddyup, stop by the HSPCA and introduce yourself. I can go home with you today! – by Robert Coplin ID# 214964 HOUSTON SPCA 900 Portway Drive, Houston 77024, 713.869.SPCA (7722) Open daily, www.houstonspca.org

I’M NOT GINGER! BY DARRIN DULING
Please don’t get the wrong impression from the title – it is not a quote from Tina Louise of “Gilligan’s Island” fame. It announces a follow-up from last month’s article on gingers. Wrong impressions are rife in horticulture, particularly with identification based on common names. In this case, there are many plants referred to as “gingers” that are not: So-called “blue ginger”, Dichorisandra thyrsiflora, in the Spiderwort Family, Commeliniaceae, is related to the omnipresent wandering jew (Tradescantia zebrina) that our grandmothers always grew. Blue ginger produces large clusters of cobalt-blue flowers atop leafy canes from late spring to frost. It can reach 8 feet tall in light shade and evenly moist soil in summer. It prefers drier conditions in winter. “Wild gingers” (Hexastylis and Asarum spp.) from North America and Asia are actually cousins to Dutchman’s pipe vines (Aristolochia spp.). Curious jug-like flowers appearing in spring are hidden beneath evergreen rosettes of handsomely patterned foliage. Plant multiple specimens to make a charming groundcover in shaded, moist, acidic soil. The greatest ginger identity confusion involves plants in family Costaceae; formerly identified by botanical taxonomists (aka “stamencounters,” and I include myself in this group) as gingers, recent research spins them into their own family. Costaceae holds over 100 species that, like true gingers, are all herbaceous, form sturdy tuberous roots, and produce lush, “tropical-looking” foliage. Brightly colored bracts and orchid-
like flowers, beloved by hummingbirds, continuously pop throughout the warm months. Although frost takes them to the ground, they return with a vengeance in spring. Trouble-free and fun to grow, costus relish light shade and evenly moist soil that is not too wet in winter. Ignore their identity crisis and evoke your own island paradise with these voluptuous stars: Chaemaecostus subsessilis: bold fuzzy leaves hug the ground, providing the backdrop for sunny yellow flowers. Lends dramatic flourish, especially in a shady spot. Cheilocostus speciosus – Crepe Ginger: large white flowers with rich yellow throats pop out from wine-red “cones.” Can grow to over 7 feet tall, forms big clumps. Spectacular. Costus barbatus – Red Tower Costus: Fiery red bracts and golden yellow flowers look like they are carved from wax. 6 to 8 feet tall, full sun if not allowed to dry out. Monocostus uniflorus – Yellow Spiral Costus: sunshine-yellow flowers on spiral stems 2 feet tall. Siphonochilus kirkii – Nigerian Rose Costus: oversized candy-pink flowers on a 2-foot leafy plant.
Keep on Growing!
