TILE & PLASTER
here’s something about Antique Weeks that has us dreaming about the road less traveled. Once Harris County is in our rear view mirror, we discover that the vast expanses of concrete have given way to pastured farmlands, panoramic landscapes, and quaint vestiges of a simpler time. In shopping for antique, vintage and upcycled goods, everybody has a different idea of what defines “treasure.” This month we take a closer look at architectural salvage, whimsical touches, and heirloom textiles that range from hand-knotted kilim rugs to luxe European bedding. Our list of the best shopping spots also includes new resources for shipping that furniture home. There’s no denying the appeal of country life. Did you know there are eight wineries in our region alone? Be sure to set aside time between shopping to sip and savor along the Texas Bluebonnet Wine Trail, then head over to the Antique Rose Emporium for a few stunners that will soon transform your garden with fragrant blooms. And no back yard is complete without some hardscaping: Read about the abundance of options for outdoor kitchens in Product and then turn the page to Project as we look at patios, decks and shade covers. One of our features this month showcases ranch living, where Jeffrey Dungan Architects utilized thoughtful architecture to bring harmony to a Hill Country Retreat.
Closer to home is The Bellemore, a new River Oaks estate that fuses traditional French design aesthetics with soft tones of pre-Modernism. Not only was Al Ross Luxury Homes able to preserve a 100-year-old oak tree, but the builder also installed more than 180 magnolia trees on the property. We also wrap up our coverage of the ASID TXGC River Oaks Show House, with more innovative decor from some of Houston’s hottest interior designers. Don’t miss the upcoming HDC Showroom Sample Sale and the Fall Katy Home & Garden Show, then mark your calendars for September’s MA+DS Houston Home Tour and Weird Homes Tour Houston. Last but not least, when it comes to making a pitch or proposal, thanking a client for their business, or ensuring your message gets read, there’s nothing that compares with print. Turn to Editor’s Picks for our curated look at designer stationery, couture cards and more. From our home to yours, Susie Tommaney CORRECTION: In our July story about the East Coast inspired remodel in Southside Place, we described Franco Albarran, AIA as a contractor and builder; we should have described him as an architect and builder. ALL HANDS ON DECK Transform Life at Home by Extending Comfort to the Great Outdoors
I
n Houston, “heat” is our middle name. Despite the mercury, we've found ways to provide shade in our daily lives. There's no tiptoeing around the resolution: We can outsmart Mother Nature to make Houston more habitable. Decks, patios and outdoor shade covers are — no pun intended — the hot trends right now. And, to ease the transition, we questioned the experts. When it comes to selecting composite or wood for a deck, there are merits for both options. Though Brian McQuin, owner of Texas Decks & Patio Covers, says he’s seeing a preference with customers for strong woods. In those instances McQuin recommends treated pine or IPE that, with regular maintenance, will stand the test of time and stay gorgeous for years. “From the very start, [wood is] just working its way toward replacement,” McQuin mentions. “A good patio is worth the money, and it deserves the money, time and attention it requires.” So regular upkeep is a necessary buy-in with this choice. 20 house& home | August 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
For those who select composite, McQuin prefers to use Trex®, Fiberon and TimberTech, materials that are made from reclaimed plastic, high density polyethylene or wood and that otherwise would be sent to the landfill. As their aesthetics continue to improve, Texas Decks & Patio Covers has noticed an increase in popularity for these types of materials. Mike Logan from Texas Pit Crafters agrees that hardscaping and backyard built-ins are a worthwhile investment, and he suggest doing it all at once. “People are doing bigger projects rather than dragging it out over phases. People want more extensions to the back of the house rather than just a shade cover. It’s bringing the living space outside.” Bigger. Better. More shade. Yep, sounds like Texas. Mike Flynn from Texas Best Installations also chimes in on the matter. “It’s about expanding your living space outdoors. Having a patio or hard surface — a patio made of concrete or tile or a deck with wood or a Trex® [high-performance composite deck

boards] — that’s where you begin. And then, you cover it with a pergola. It’s designed for shade or a full fledged patio. The name of the game is budget but, also, how do you intend to use the space? If you want it to be an outdoor living area and extension of your home with tables, chairs, sofa, televisions… you can be that elaborate, or you can just put a shade cover over your grill or seating area,” he says. The most difficult part about creating a backyard environment comes from the multitude of choices. We’ve seen screen rooms, sunrooms and pool enclosures, which all work for keeping out the mosquitoes and flies. For shade, options include patio covers, pergolas and Sunbrella® awnings. Our recommendation is to browse around the galleries of local contractors and builders to get some ideas for what you want, then fine tune that list through the bidding and quotation process. If you’re going to make an investment like this, it might as well count, and all agree that it’s worth the dollars. Spending a good amount of time, money, and attention toward creating something worth the effort is going to pay off in the long run.

OPEN AIR DINING Move the Party Outdoors With Functional Backyard Kitchens
W
ouldn’t it be easier to hose down your kitchen after preparing a meal? No muss, no fuss and easy cleanup. With an outdoor kitchen, that can be possible. As more and more homeowners are wanting to enhance their outdoor experiences at home, al fresco cooking and dining have evolved from a grill and picnic table to elaborate spaces with gas-, electric- and wood-burning stoves, sinks, refrigerators, ice makers and every appliance and convenience typically found inside the home. Because of the mild climate during the fall and winter in the Houston area, outdoor kitchens can be used all year and not just for the backyard summer barbeque, says David Herbert, owner of Archadeck Outdoor Living’s southwest Houston location. “It is year round in this area,” says Herbert. “And people want everything in their kitchen — it is an extension of their house.” Since most entertaining seems to take place in the kitchen, moving the group outside — under a pergola or covered deck — seems like a great way to partner with Mother Nature for a party. Before embarking on what could be an expensive investment, Mike Flynn, owner of Texas Best Installations, urges homeowners to consult with professionals: engineers, architects and outdoor kitchen installation companies. Be sure the foundation will support the stove, refrigerator, grill, ice maker, cabinets and counters. 26 house& home | August 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
“You have to have a foundation that will support the additional weight. Wood decks or pavers probably would not be advisable. Concrete foundations are recommended,” he says. Flynn says he has noticed over the past 23 years that requests for outdoor kitchens are becoming more elaborate and larger. “Clients are asking for all the accoutrements of their indoor kitchen — side burners, warmers, good lighting and counter space. They are really just kitchens but outdoors,” he says. By weatherproofing the work station, homeowners have very little maintenance to deal with. Even the furniture selected should be rainproof and durable. Stone countertops are usually recommended because they are easy to care for and not prone to problems with heat or cold temperatures. And, since it is outdoors, perhaps a nearby herb garden will be useful: pick fresh basil, oregano or dill, or grow tomatoes, onions and peppers to enhance the meal. Herbert says recently he has noticed clients selecting newer and trendier finishes: a leather-look on the granite or choosing Quartzite rather than granite. “It is mostly the finishes that we see change,” he says. “The kitchens are still brick, stone or stucco,” but some of the styles vary. In designing the outdoor kitchen, counters can be straight, Lshaped, curved or in a corner, depending on the location in the

No matter where it is placed, be sure there are no low hanging limbs or wires overhead. The kitchen can be boxed in with half walls or higher privacy fences, depending on personal preference. Herbert says clients want refrigerators or beverage coolers, side burners (for sauces), grills, sinks, stoves and one of the real modernizations: a wood- or gas-burning pizza oven. “It is a luxury item and to have one is almost a novelty,” says Herbert. “You wouldn’t use it every day, but it is great to heat things up and make pizza, too.”

For a state as large as Texas, it should be no surprise to learn there are several regional wine trails. We’re partial to the Texas Bluebonnet Wine Trail; not only is it close to Houston but it organizes five seasonal events each year. Photo by Blake Mistich

he Texas Bluebonnet Wine Trail is a collection of wineries that offer award-winning Texas wines, spectacular country views and much more. With its close proximity to Houston and Austin, you can make a day trip or take a break while antique shopping for winery tours, tastings, grape stomping, wine pairing dinners and concerts. Member wineries along the trail work together to present five seasonal events per year, including the upcoming Wine and Sausage Trail (October) and Holiday Wine Trail (December), so mark your calendars!
BERNHARDT WINERY Eight miles from historic Montgomery, this small mom and pop boutique winery produces classic varietals including wines made with grapes unique to Texas like black Spanish (Crimson red blend) and blanc du bois (Blanc du Bois Estate white). ANTIQUE WEEKS: A Field Guide Architectural Salvage, Textile Goods and Whimsy By Marsha Canright nine, throw in something masculine, like a beat-up musician’s road case or an old leather chair. Keep a harmonious blend of old and new. When you’re on the hunt, keep your eyes open for these Junk Gypsy favorites: concert posters, nostalgic roadside signs, and vintage serapes.
Discover unique finds from across the globe at Old World Antieks in La Grange. From European antiquities to architecural elements and fine furnishings, it’s a must stop for any savvy shopper. Photo courtesy of Old World Antieks
I
t’s almost pickin’ time in the country, when mainstay brick-and-mortar (or shiplap and tin roof) dealers are joined by pop-up tents and seasonal merchants in an exciting time of year known as Antique Weeks. Some vendors are open year-round, while others will welcome shoppers mid- to late-September or early October. Check vendor websites for exact dates then head out to explore a wonderful world of whimsical objects, architectural salvage and sumptuous textiles in this buffet of “junque.” The quest may involve long days of haggling and wandering through fields, but those who accept the challenge will not be disappointed. Be sure to pick up next month’s magazine when we look at nautical artifacts, jewelry, vintage clothing and antique signs. WHIMSICAL TOUCHES If you gravitate towards playful, one-of-a-kind accessories, remember the mantra of Amie and Jolie Sikes: “Your home should speak to everything you love, whether it's in style or not.” The Sikes sisters are the brains behind two local legends: Junk Gypsy, their flagship store, and Wander Inn, a boutique lodge. Each of these outposts offers a goldmine of whimsical design inspiration — they are full of texture; clean and modern with winks at the old west and an artful smattering of Americana. With hundreds of pop-ups to see during Antique Weeks, it can be tempting to look first and buy later. But, when you are viscerally drawn to a horse head vase or a crochet wall hanging, best to go for it — even if you don’t know exactly how or where it will work in your home. These fall-in-love objects are the seed from which a well-curated room is born, according to Amie and Jolie. Their philosophy: Start with one thing you really love, like an old sign, and build the room around that element. Remember to mix and match styles and eras along the way. If the room feels too femi38 house& home | August 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
ARCHITECTURAL SALVAGE Antique Weeks are a catch-all, a landing spot for architectural elements rescued from the wrecking ball. In one booth, there’s a display of old-growth flooring, pulled from a 19th century cottage; at the next, a stack of stained glass windows. There are stair parts and doors of all sizes, cast iron emblems and industrial light fixtures aching to go home with a passionate DIY’er. But, if you’re looking for already functional pieces crafted from reclaimed materials, Paul Michael’s Market Hill in Round Top is a necessary stop. His shop is full of live edge benches, antler chandeliers, and reclaimed doors turned room dividers and dining tables. For stunning 19th century doors, pillars and gates, find yourself at McLaren’s Antiques & Interiors for objects ranging from French châteaux to Indian palaces. HEIRLOOM TEXTILES Round Top regular Rachel Ashwell coined the term “shabby chic” to describe her perfectly disheveled, multi-textural style, which relies on luxuriously faded, supple linens. If you like this look, there are textiles galore to be found while antiquing from luxe linen tablecloths and flowery vintage hankies to hand-knotted kilim rugs and antique lace by the yard. A bit of advice: savvy shoppers won’t be deterred by damaged pieces, which can be repurposed as hand towels or to patch an aging quilt. Textile lovers shouldn’t miss Leftovers Antiques Home Mercantile and Pandora de Balthazar Fine Linens for lounge-worthy linens; for elegant Turkish carpets, try pop-ups for Nomadic Trading Co. and Rugvana. AIR-CONDITIONED BLISS If you need a break from the heat, there are several oases to earmark as you make your way down the antiques trail. With 12,000 square feet of space, Round Top Vintage Market boasts blissfully cool climes and even cooler treasures from more than 50 vendors: antiques, art, vintage fashion and more. There’s also Cole’s Antique Show, a massive 63,000 square-foot Warrenton venue with more than 200 vendors. Purists will be happy to know that authenticity reigns at Cole’s — you won’t find any new merch or reproductions. And for R&R, head over to The Arbors with happy hour and bites from 3-6 p.m. daily (September 25-October 5) and an on-site cafe that’s air conditionined.

YIN AND YANG Unwind and Rejuvenate With ASID TXGC River Oaks Show House By SuSie Tommaney PhoToS By michael hunTer PhoTograPhy

inding the perfect balance between his and hers, Bowman Design Studio transformed this master bathroom into a relaxing space that blends natural accents with a monochromatic palette. Brooke Bowman, principal designer and owner, hit paydirt with the perfectly sized rug from Post Modern Traditions & Pride of Persia, then added in accessories and furniture from Mecox Gardens and Creative Style Furniture, as well as florals from Pikes Peak. Not shown, but the closet’s Bonnington flush mount lamp from Aerin echoes the faceted Bonnington chandelier that anchors this space. LEFT: Sherry Millien of Terravista Interior Design Group paired paintings from Marilyn Biles’ “Celebrating Life Cycles” series with a comfy bench from Creative Style Furniture for this second floor transition space. OPPOSITE: We’ve vowed to never purchase quadrilateral mirrors ever again after viewing this crush-worthy mirror selected by Teena Caldwell of TwentyTwo Fifty Interiors. But the showstopper in this master vestibule has to be the illuminated onyx table, with agate lamp accents and tiered shades. Gold and natural stone accents and a lucite bench complete the look.

Custom artwork from Janet Gust’s WOW Furniture Line set the tone for this second floor bedroom, but the pièce de résistance is the Weitzner upholstery on the ottoman and chairs. Tiffany Montgomery of Torregrossa Interiors then balanced the space with Queen of Spain wallcovering from Schumacher and a white camelback sofa. BELOW LEFT: Teena Caldwell of Twenty-Two Fifty Interiors paired a 17th century French bed and art panel from Joyce Horn Antiques with modern lacquer night tables; the walls and ceiling have a diamond plaster finish. BELOW RIGHT: Cheryl Baker of CDB Interiors selected Kate Spade “Bella Books” wallpaper for this ladies’ retreat/study space; the area rug is from Madison Lilly.

ABOVE: Sherrell Neal of Sherrell Design Studio conceived this bedroom that’s light and bright, blending French contemporar y patterns and textiles with African ar t and vintage accessories. BELOW LEFT: Neal carried that Southern charm through to the second floor landing, continuing with the palette of neutrals and pale blues. BELOW: Saima Seyar of Elima Designs paired state of the ar t technology with a monochromatic palette and natural accents to create this third floor fitness studio. Not shown, but an of fthe-beaten-path yoga room makes creative use of an awkward space.

ABOVE: Yesely Love and the team at Canaima Design created this media room that blends aesthetics with practicality. The acoustic wall shields sound from a nearby third floor bedroom, while velvet shades lend an old Hollywood feel. Sofas and ottoman from Roche Bobois, abstract wall painting by Ezequiel Zena, and cozy Parisian rug all combine to create an eclectic space for entertaining. BELOW: Tasked with infusing a windowless laundry room with color and light, Lilly Powell of Kirby and Z Interior Design introduced artwork by Edger Molina, fine linens from Tribute Goods and an elegant rug from Madison Lily. Glass and crystal accents complete the look. RIGHT: Located just off the play room, this hangout area can double as a guest bedroom with its dark green walls and mustard ombre draperies, designed by Jennifer Barron of Jennifer Barron Interiors. The big surprise here is how Barron framed vintage wallpaper to create a unique piece of art. A hip, midcentury feel is achieved through the gold sunburst mirrors and Sommerard triple-arm chandelier by Aerin.

eep in the Texas Hill Country, within the luxurious Cordillera Ranch community in Boerne, Texas, Don and Kris Rymer’s home coils upon itself like a snake. But instead of the percussive tail of a rattler, its tip is a central courtyard. The house almost seems to arrange itself around it, says Jeffrey Dungan, the home’s architect. Wrapped around the courtyard are two casitas, a great room, and a stone wall with a Roman arch and a contemporary outdoor fireplace carved into it. Beauty and serenity are in abundance here: Texas limestone, a clay tile roof tailor-made for the arid climate, an infinity pool, and a stunning view of the Twin Sisters

The interior courtyard can be accessed through the zaguán, a feature that dates back to sixteenth century Latin America. It is often found in Mexican and American Southwest architecture.
Mountains, whose cyan majesty could replace the purple mountains in “America the Beautiful.” But it’s the interior courtyard that is the crown jewel of the Rymer residence. Dungan points to its three-dimensionality with views in several directions. The great room, a living room of massive proportions, sits at the rear of the courtyard and has transparent glass on both sides. So when you're in the great room, you’re outside as well, and vice versa. “It’s an amazing space. It’s a very unique space. There’s not that many homes that you’ll see that will have it,” says Dungan. “I am very thankful that the Rymers went along with me on creating these outdoor spaces. It is a very different kind of home.” Dungan met the Rymers in Florida years ago to help them conceptualize a beachside home. Eventually, the Rymers decided against building that Floridian retreat, but their collaboration with the award-winning architect was just beginning. When they called him about a piece of property they’d purchased in the Texas Hill Country, he gladly accepted the challenge. This was another chance to work

with the couple and it would also be his first time designing a house in the great state of Texas. “By practicing architecture in different environments and different regions, I learn things that I then get to apply to other houses and other regions that may be far away,” says Dungan. For example, the entryway to the private central courtyard, a zaguán, has its roots in sixteenth century Latin American architecture. Styles, building traditions, and construction practices vary a great deal within and across countries, says Duncan. So he knew that his approach to the home had to be unique to the Lone Star State. And while he was inspired by a number of cultures and locations, he made sure to give the home that Texas flair, including using Texas marble from the Rymer family business, Materials Marketing™. It was a no-brainer to go local. Texans have more state pride than anyone Dungan has ever encountered. “Any Texan will tell you; it’s not a state, it’s a republic,” he says with a laugh. “I’ve never met a group of people that were prouder of where they were from than Texans.”

Even as the hot Texas sun beats down, the central courtyard offers pockets of cooling shade. The three-pointed arch of the doorway perfectly frames the mountains in the distance.
“We’re looking at nature and how we best fit into it.” — Jeffrey Dungan Contrary to popular opinion, interior design is considered well before a home is finished. Too many architects disregard interior design in their drawings, leaving the designers to unravel the tangled web they’ve unwittingly woven. Dungan favors a more thoughtful approach to interior design and decoration. He calls it “interior architecture.” He works with designers and decorators in the early stages of his process. Together, he and the designers are able to create a building surround that is both gorgeous and pragmatic. The Rymers have a living room so grand that it warrants the name great room: 16-foot ceilings, marble fireplace, French doors with accompanying transom windows, and marvelous chandeliers from Restoration Hardware’s Camino Vintage Filament collection. But the real show-stopper in the great room is the natural light streaming through the transom windows.
60 house& home | August 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
Natural light is essential to making emotionally impactful spaces, says Dungan. But it can also carry with it heat. This is especially problematic in an area so close to the droughtprone San Antonio region. “The roof overhangs, the materials I use, and the courtyard and its effects are all tools that help keep the sun at bay.” Dungan’s design is driven by the natural environment of the land he’s building upon, its topography, its view, the way the sun bounces on and off its shapes and contours. “When I’m looking at topography, I’m trying to find the spot on the land that seems to be best accepting of an intervention by man,” says Dungan. “We’re looking at nature and how we best fit into it.” “The house needs to be of the hill, not on the hill,” says Dungan, referencing Frank Lloyd Wright’s famous quote. “Hill and house should live together, each the happier for the other.”

othing says “I’ve made it” quite like living in style, which is exactly the intent of every nuance and amenity of The Bellemore at 3443 Inwood, built in the style of the French Design Era (1935-1949). Brimming with elegant, polished details and an aptitude for life’s finer indulgences, the newly built property, built by Al Ross Luxury Homes, is shaping up to be one of the hottest houses on the market. Plus, it easily embodies that triple threat that is so highly valued in the real estate world: location, location, location. “It’s a very unique property for Houston. It’s one of the first spec houses built that is in the $10 million price range. I’m not aware of any other spec house in River Oaks for that price,” says Hedley Karpas. He, along with Nadia Ross, serve as listing agents for the home with Martha Turner Sotheby’s International Realty. The house falls in the prime section of River Oaks. It’s got the tony address, proximity to the country club and easy access to all the restaurants, shops and everyday travels one may need. That’s just the location, though. Once a potential buyer steps onto the property, it’s a whole new game. The 11,500

This light-filled home has soaring ceilings and elegant European features and finishes. In the background is a gas-log fireplace while, in the foreground, the entryway floor is framed with metal inlays and rich marble accents in the corners.
square-foot home, complete with gated security, is situated on a half acre lot that brings luxury to a whole new level. Kapras mentions that the builder brought in more than 180 magnolia trees to surround the entire back yard in order to provide the ultimate in privacy. In addition, more than 2,000 plants were installed on the property. A walkthrough of the house showcases the amenities in this stately manor. Pull into the garage and discover the ceiling height is tall enough to install car lifts. The four car garage can instantly be transformed into an eight car garage with this feature. The epoxy coated floor and insulated garage doors provide the perfect finish. Elegance engulfs the space upon entering the three-story house. Italian porcelain floors with metal and wood inlays, Venetian plaster walls, one-of-a-kind chandeliers and Italian porcelain counters run the course of the sparkling interior.

Two staircases, along with the service of an elevator, make navigating the six bedroom and nine bathroom abode a breeze. The home is perfect for entertaining: The kitchen hosts three ovens and top-of-the-line Miele appliances fill the cooking area. There is an oversized island with rare Italian marble and, conveniently located next to the kitchen, are a home office and butler’s pantry. The kitchen opens onto the two story downstairs family room and its floor-to-ceiling walls of glass that overlook the tree-lined back yard. There visitors will find a hot tub and a swimming pool with Italian glass mosaic accents; the pool is heated while its fountains serve to cool the water during summer months. The outdoor living space is accompanied by a gazebo, a fireplace and full summer kitchen. The builder also took special care to preserve a 100-year-old oak tree.

This luxury six bedroom smart home on Inwood utilizes Control4 home automation, Lutron LED lighting controls, and an extensive speaker system. A fireplace with marble surround anchors this private den in the master suite.
The opulence continues inside. Downstairs flooring is Italian porcelain, while the remainder of the house features white oak floors that have been specially stained. Karpas mentions specific highlights are a dog grooming salon and a walk-in chilled wine room with enough storage for approximately 1,200 bottles. Each wine shelf has LED lighting recessing behind the shelving. The coup de grâce comes in the master suite. The ceiling in the master closet is silver leafed, the closet displays glass front cabinets with recessed LED lighting, and two islands feature phone charging and USB ports. The steam shower in the master bathroom is finished with Italian glass mosaic and two water closets, each with a bidet. The third floor comes decked out with everything a home-

owner might desire: a safe room, a movie theater, an exercise room, and a spa that includes a massage room, dry sauna, steam sauna and shower. Every detail received painstaking attention, and there was no stone left unturned when finishing the home. “As far as quality of construction, everything is top-of-the-line. If it’s not done to the builder’s expectations, he’ll rip it out and start over again,” says Karpas. “He stands by his products. Many of the clients give him the keys to the houses and let him come and go.” That sounds like a stamp of approval in our book. The home is currently on the market, but we don’t expect it to last long. Karpas says a property across the street went on the market for $22 million and had a pending bid within 24 hours.

TIME-TESTED SURVIVORS Roses Create That Romantic Interpretation Often Found Missing In Landscapes
R
oses get a bad rap, and no one knows better than Mike Shoup, the founder of the Antique Rose Emporium in Brenham. But times, they have a-changed. From spraying to pruning, the rules that once made roses seem “fussy” are gone, with Shoup saying that homeowners now have access to “a selection of roses that really are the ultimate garden plants offering color, fragrance and ease of care throughout the gardening season.” “The reality is that the success of a Houstonian with roses often depends on the types of roses that they choose,” says Shoup. One of his best sellers is Belinda’s Dream, a crowd-pleaser for its perfect pink flowers held on a nice drop stem, and the pale apricot variation of Belinda’s Blush. “It’s a great cut flower,” says Shoup. “It’s very fragrant and it’s an easy performer.” Among the China roses, which originated in Chinese coastal communities with high humidity and heat similar to Houston and Gulf Coast locales, Shoup says you can’t go wrong with the butterfly rose, mutabilis, whose blooms appear like multi-colored “butterflies dancing on the foliage”; the dark red Cramoisi Supérieur and its pure white version, Ducher; or the “time-tested survivor” Old 76 house& home | August 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
Blush. Clusters of the semi-double, lilac pink blooms can be found in cemeteries all over the South. “If dead people can grow them, anybody can,” jokes Shoup. And the sweetheart rose, a polyantha named Cecile Brunner, is a perfectly formed little bud, ideal for a boutonniere and with a wonderful fragrance. Shoup believes fragrance is important, and he notes that breeders are now moving toward fragrant, easy-care roses. In fact, the Antique Rose Emporium has developed two such award-winning roses, Thomas Affleck and Pioneer Spirit, through its own breeding program. After carefully selecting your roses, Shoup says “it’s the life of the soil that determines the success of your plants.” Shoup recommends a compost of about two to three inches on top with about six to seven inches integrated into the soil so it’s throughout the entire root base of the plant. Layer a mulch on top, like pine or hardwood bark, and get out of the way so millions of microbes can get to work. “If you do a good job of providing organic living soil then the microbes will take care of your plants,” says Shoup.
Lastly, if you’re looking to add a little drama, Shoup says “the ooh and aah of a garden is really from a few selections of good climbing roses.” “A good, well-placed climber sometimes is the most evocative and most beautiful thing you can do,” says Shoup. “They create that romantic interpretation that is often missing in a good landscape.” With fall around the corner, the best time for Houstonians to plant, Shoup hopes homeowners will “just give it a try.” “The garden is a lot bigger than the individual plants residing in it,” says Shoup, noting its potential for individual artistry and creativity. “Expression is so important to people,” adds Shoup, and in a garden, “the expression is infinite.”

PET OF THE MONTH
MY NAME IS LAVENDER!
S
ometimes people can be so cruel. Lavender was dropped off in front of the Houston SPCA’s rehoming center in a cardboard box with three tiny kittens. We immediately brought them in to be checked by our veterinarians. They all spent some time in a foster home, and are now ready for a new chance in life. Lavender’s foster parent has learned that this cute kitty really enjoys passing the time sunbathing on the patio and chasing her cat toys.
