editor’s note We live in a hightech world with new
and improved gadgets, cell phones and computers coming out every month. The same is true of home automation. Having a “smart home” is becoming more important to homeowners, and it is a reflection of how we live our daily lives. On Page 30, discover the latest and greatest in home automation technology. An important part of home automation is security. When an alarm is activated, a central station operator can inform the police, and the homeowner can be notified through cell phone or e-mail messages. Security gates add another level of security, and outdoor lighting systems also help keep intruders away. Home automation systems also can control lighting, audio systems, thermostat, pool and spa functions as well as irrigation systems. The sky is the limit and your home can be as hightech or low-tech as you like. Then on Page 27, find out how modern textiles can completely update the look of your home. Many textiles on the market today reference 1950s and 1960s retro looks, while others super-size a classic pattern to create a fresh, bold look. If modern is not usually your design style, re-invent a traditional room with pops of modern fabric to create interest. Mixing styles will help you create a unique look that is all your own. You’ll notice this issue includes the Dallas Home & Garden Market show guide. Saturday, Sept. 11 to Sunday, Sept. 13, don’t miss this special event at Dallas Market Hall, showcasing home and garden exhibitors and a special Remodeler’s Surplus Sale. Habitat for Humanity of South Collin County, area home builders and remodelers have cleaned out their storerooms and brought the goodies for this “cash and carry” event, where shoppers will find doors, windows, tile, light fixtures, plumbing fixtures, cabinets, flooring and more. Also be sure to stop by House & Home’s booth #538. We hope to see you there! AMANDA FLATTEN Editor

and surrounding such a site often proves unbearable. All this is before the vectors — rats, raccoons, roaches and the like — enter the scene. CHAPTER 3: A HAPPIER PLACE
However, our discards occasionally meet with a different fate. Some facilities provide an area separate from the tipping floor for common recyclables, an area for brush and yard waste (used for composting), an area for building materials or furniture or appliances, etc. When the essential function of a transfer station becomes waste diversion and retrieval rather than waste compaction and disposal, our rubbish has stumbled into a materials recovery facility (MRF). Here, recyclable metals, compostable organics, intact construction supplies and reusable items ranging from paint to microwaves to bed frames to bicycles are separated from the refuse. Some MRFs even reach out to artists who can find aesthetic value in the unlikeliest junk. What’s more, the economics of recovery rival the environmental benefit: a recent study found that the Greater Austin area buries in landfills about $40 million annually in easily recoverable materials.
The Tale of the Trail of Trash Use it, toss it, bag it, carry it to the curb and forget about it — this is the way most of us think about trash. Out of sight, out of mind. Get the garbage as far away as possible. Even the most adventurous children hold their noses and make excuses to avoid carrying those nasty trash bags to the curb (“But, Mom, I did it last week!”). Of course, nobody wants to live next to their refuse … nor should they, given the potential problems associated with exposure to harmful bacteria, heavy metals and chemical contamination. So, as we push discards out of our homes and into the waste stream, precisely what journey does garbage take from the curb to its final resting place? The only slightly dramatized tale that follows is more grubby than epic, more nauseating than whimsical, but a tale that nevertheless must be told: the tale of the trail of our trash. CHAPTER 1: TRUCKIN’ THROUGH THE ’HOOD
Most homeowners have seen garbage trucks methodically making their way through the neighborhood, often with very sweaty men jumping on and off to hoist bulging bags or mechanical arms lifting overflowing bins into a chasm at the rear of the truck. Thus, the journey of trash begins with the solid waste collection vehicle — or in Britain, the quaint-sounding dustbin lorry — a rolling ferry transporting garbage away from the quiet solace of the shire to a land of, well, more garbage. Once secured by the collection vehicle, trash usually meets the wrath of a compactor to make room for its malodorous brethren. After collecting and compacting about six tons, the truck departs. CHAPTER 2: A STOP ON THE WAY
While many trucks simply make their way to a landfill, others stop at a trash transfer station. Transfer stations are a kind of trash purgatory, a transitional space between initial collection and final disposition. These garbage depots consist of a simple slab of concrete — a tipping floor with or without walls or covering — designed to allow large trucks to dump their load into a large pile, where it is once again compacted and then packed into larger trucks destined for the landfill. As you can imagine, the stench inside 8
CHAPTER 4: AN UNPLEASANT GRAVE
Unfortunately, materials recovery facilities are a rare breed in Texas, which means that the journey taken by the vast majority of our trash still ends with land disposal. Trucks arrive from transfer stations or neighborhoods at the landfill gate, where they are weighed, sometimes inspected by a spotter perched above the scales (checking for illegal items like freon-filled refrigerators) and then waved on to the working face. There, trash meets with more trash meets with menacing compactors — behemoth vehicles often equipped with massive spiked metal wheels and a dozer blade — load after load, hour after hour until, finally, the waste is covered with 6 inches of dirt at the end of the day. This process of burying and covering garbage to prevent contact with moisture is fittingly known as dry entombment. Within this trash mountain our refuse finds its final resting place. Or does it? EPILOGUE: THE TRAIL OF TRASH … CONTINUED
A number of studies show that even modern landfills with liners eventually leak, allowing household chemicals and heavy metals to leach into soil and nearby water sources. Garbage dumps are the largest source of humancaused methane emissions, a greenhouse gas 23 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Researchers have found high levels of mercury in some landfill gas intended for venting. The journey of our trash may not end with its entombment; it can come back to haunt us. ALTERNATIVE ENDING: NO TRAIL AT ALL
In many ways, the tale of trash is choose-your-own-adventure rather than scripted drama. Opportunities to divert our detritus from the trash trail exist at every turn in the story: we can purchase recycled and recyclable goods, repair and reuse old items, donate to Goodwill or use Freecycle.org for unwanted things. Food and yard waste can go to a compost operation like Texas Pure in Plano. Best Buy recycles old TVs and computers. Even styrofoam has a more suitable resting place than the landfill: a local company called Metro Foam recycles it and most packaging stores are happy to take the peanuts. This is the happier ending of the tale of the trail of trash … the ending that leaves no trail at all. Jeffrey Jacoby is program director for Texas Campaign for the Environment, a grassroots nonprofit working locally and statewide to press for sustainable waste and recycling policies. clean contrasts can do two things to an environment: They can fire it up with assertive colors and edgy patterns, or cool it down with restraint and use of negative space. Often they use symbols, both evident and shadowy, from contemporary culture. Color is extremely important as it creates an emotional response especially when combined with daring abstractions and spidery graphics. “Modern is present day, but timeless,” says Kimberle Frost, creative director for the fabrics firm Designtex. “It has the pulse of the market.” Modern textiles on the market today may reference retro looks from the 1950s and 1960s in styles ranging from mid-century to op

art, pop art and psychedelic. Or they can be as fresh and new as some of today’s prints and weaves that take their inspiration from computer circuit boards, pixels and digitized images. Christy Sullivan, owner of Christy’s Draperies, says customers today are keeping furnishings and textiles simple. “[For window treatments] more people are decorating with panels instead of all the elaborate top treatments,” she says. “The modern textiles today have clean lines, squares and circles. The younger generation finds this appealing as they view these styles as retro, but it never fails that colors and trends always come back around.” TODAY ’ S TRENDS
According to Sullivan, customers have become bolder with their color and fabric selections over the past few years. Before, it seemed everyone was a little afraid of color and wanted to play it safe with neutrals, she says. “Now, I think people are seeing the possibilities that fabric can bring to the room,” she says. “Drapes are an easy and affordable way to add quick color, and in many cases, drapes can be the focal point. It’s a like a piece of art that adds balance to the room.” Modern fabrics from Christy’s Draperies include bold colors and graphic elements. the colors of modern “Any color can be beautiful in modern design, providing it is crisp, clear and saturated,” says Dorothy Cosonas with KnollTextiles. “Color trumps all. I’ve known from early on that even the best design colored poorly will never sell.” That being said, designers have noticed some currently popular colors. According to Mary Ann Young, owner of Curtain Couture, traditional style is predominant in Dallas. Traditional color combinations such as golds, reds, browns and greens are evident throughout the market today, but there’s also a great deal of the combination of blue and brown with touches of coral or lime green within the market, too, she says. “The neutral color palettes in Dallas remain fairly warm in tone leaning toward gold rather than gray, but I’m starting to have clients work into neutral palettes that include gray, taupe, white and creams combined in a sophisticated layer of color depths and tones,” she states. These, she adds, are neutral palettes spiced up with a punch of strong color with an accessory or art. Young says that gray, purple and orange are new trendy colors appearing everywhere, being shown in many different and varying hues. “They’re being layered in varying degrees on their own and being combined,” she says. “The other under current I’m seeing is the return of stronger blues from royal to navy and a bit of light fleshy peach as a neutral,” she says. Young also adds that strong, dark yellows are appearing as well, usually combined with black and white. She says Dallas homeowners have always had impeccable taste when it comes to interiors, but not enough courage to break out of the norm. Kimberle Frost with Designtex agrees that pure gray is gaining strength in the market. “It is especially nice when combined with a bright unexpected color, like yellow,” she says.

Sullivan says floral-printed fabrics are slowly becoming popular again and that some colors and trends never go out of style. “Reds and any form of rust or burgundy are always good,” she states. “Also gold styles pass the test of time.” Sullivan adds that silks and chenilles are popular today. As for design style, Sullivan says traditional is most popular, but homeowners aren’t afraid to mix what they like. “We see contemporary mixed in with traditional, and we often convince our clients to try riskier things they wouldn’t think is their style,” she states. “In the end, if the customer likes the look and it fits the room, they don’t care what style it is. It’s all about what looks good.”

If you want to venture out of the traditional mode and try something with a more modern look, Mary Ann Young, owner of Curtain Couture, says homeowners need to find the courage first to simplify, edit and remove overly traditional accessories, leaving only a few favorite pieces in the room. She suggests infusing a few clean-lined furniture pieces, such as a coffee table or accent lamp, and replacing traditional heavy lamps with sleek and simple ones and other accessories. “The addition of contemporary or abstract art can quickly lighten a traditional look, creating interesting composition,” she says. “Keeping upholstered pieces, which are textural, solid or even striped, as opposed to floral, damask or paisley, will help to create a more contemporary feel.” Perhaps Dorothy Cosonas, creative director for KnollTextiles, explains modern textiles best: “Modernism is not limited to any specific application. Modernism as a point of view really addresses the functional need of the moment — devoid of unnecessary ornament, but beautiful in the expression. Modernism as a style is almost irrelevant. The end result that is correct for a use is what really counts. Simple beauty always works for me.”

Options abound for homeowners when selecting a security system for their home. Ray Cherry, vice president of sales at Dallas Security Systems says the company offers two great options. Through cellular communications, alarms can be reported to the central station, using the company’s Digital Monitoring Products (DMP) XT series panels. This option is handy in case of a phone line failure. When an intruder activates the alarm system, signals are sent from the control panel to the company’s central station. Central station operators use this information to call the police. “The alarm panel sends the homeowner messages every time an event occurs,” Cherry says. “These can be alarms or each time the alarm system is turned on/off. The system also has the ability to be programmed into normal operating hours, only sending messages if the system isn’t turned on or turned off at the programmed time in the morning.” A second choice is via network/Internet communications. Using this option, the alarm panel can send the homeowner e-mail messages. Messages are sent each time something happens to the alarm panel. The system also allows homeowners to monitor who visits the home. 30
The OmniTouch 10p Touchscreen is a portable 10.4 inch IP-based touch screen that has an Ethernet port and built-in WLAN. It is primarily used as an interface for either Omni family or Lumina family home control systems. However, it can be set up as a standalone remote for your home theater. Having your property properly illuminated is an important part of home security. John Watson Landscape Illumination offers dramatic lighting systems to help keep intruders away and create ambiance outside the home.
Cherry says security gates are desirable and very sophisticated these days. “Some gates swing or slide open,” he says. “Most homeowners will have an entry telephone system installed. A camera is built into this and the homeowner is alerted each time a visitor pushes a button. The homeowner can both talk to and buzz in the visitor.” Having an outdoor lighting system is another important security measure for homeowners to consider. Lighting creates ambiance for the home, while keeping intruders away. John Pritchett, Draftsman for John Watson Landscape Illumination, emphasizes the importance of outdoor lighting. “Aesthetic lighting accents the trees from underneath, producing a reflection of lighting downward. Security lighting is mounted above the ground, shining down, creating shadow,” he says. “When assembled, our lighting creates a moonlight affect.” According to Pritchett, security lighting can go on and off with the use of a timer or switch. Shannon Watson, president and owner of John Watson Landscape Illumination, says the company offers two popular lighting options. “Mercury vapor gas discharge lighting lasts 24,000 hours, the equivalent to being burned all night, every day for four years,” he says. “Light-emitting diode lights burn 50,000 hours, equal to 10.5 years all night, every night. These lights use 85 percent less electricity per watt.”

doors can be controlled remotely when armed at night or they can be set up to close automatically 30 minutes after the homeowner leaves for work. If the garage door is left open, the home automation system can close it. This option decreases a thief’s access into the house. Homeowners can also set the home’s temperature for everyday comfort. By setting the thermostat to the desired level, the temperature will remain at that setting at times the homeowner isn’t home or vacationing. Some homeowners prefer to control the home’s functions with a touch screen, eliminating wall plates throughout the home, giving the user complete control with the press of a button. COUNTING THE COSTS
Homeowners have many choices for ultimate comfort in home automation. Francis says a beginning automation system could start at about $5,000 and easily go up to six figures. “It all depends on variables such as square footage of the home, lights that will be controlled, number of touch screens and key pads used, number of control locations in the home, number of thermostats, pool or spa control, any cameras or gate control, number of rooms with music access, and finally, if the home is being constructed or is already existing,” he says.

GETTING CREATIVE AT HOME
In addition to having a safe and secure home on the outside, automated lighting and entertainment systems inside the home are just as popular, according to Jay Francis, president of McKinney Smart Homes, which offers the Omni line of systems from Home Automation Inc., as well as other top-of-the-line home control systems, lighting control products and home audio products. Francis adds that home automation is about comfort, convenience, security and energy savings. “Home automation is the control and remote access of your home’s systems such as lighting, appliances, entertainment, heating and air conditioning, pool and spa, as well as an irrigation system,” he says. Instead of walking into a dark house, homeowners can elect to have their interior and exterior lights come on by accessing the remote garage door opener. An armed system can check if the garage door is left open on accident. Garage
