The kitchen of a 1987 home in West University Place has been redesigned to accommodate the needs of the homeowners who are avid cooks. Houston designer Audrey Drought-Mitchell, ASID, added more work space to make the kitchen function more efficiently and employed natural woods in simple lines to create a warm, hospitable space evocative of their Louisiana heritage. 1515 Vassar Street PEGGY HULL, ASID Creative Touch Interiors 713.529.7681 www.mycreativetouch.com From the minute they stepped through the front door, Peggy Hull and her husband John Glover saw the potential of this 1935 home in the heart of the Museum District. Good bones. great natural light and wonderful architectural moldings made for a great start for a remodel. The focus immediately went to an existing small kitchen with a narrow useless back hallway space. A breakfast nook was created with the addition of a bay window which now provides a view of a lush English garden. Natural light was also added with an additional window at the sink. The designer/homeowner created a multifunctional kitchen with gourmet appliances, breakfast nook, utility closet and beverage bar all within the original footprint of the space. Custom block panel cabinets with glass fronts painted in a putty color provide a great neutral with the soft palette of handmade Italian subway tile backsplash. “Sparkle” comes from the use of stainless steel appliances, an industrial island and halogen lighting. The result is a charming updated vintage style that is in keeping with the original architecture of this charming home. Functional and pretty baths are created within small spaces with the use of inset medicine cabinets, marble and hand-painted wall coverings. The biggest change comes in the master bedroom where the newly vaulted ceiling with octagonal window allows views of the sky.

Peggy Hull, ASID, owner of Creative Touch Interiors and current president of the Texas Gulf Coast Chapter of ASID, has more than 20 years experience in interior design in Houston—from custom home building and remodeling to inhome consultation and furnishings.

2623 Robinhood AUDREY DROUGHT-MITCHELL, ASID Audrey Drought Design Inc. 713.266.3333 www.audreydroughtdesign.com Nestled amid the beautiful oak trees of West University Place, this home was originally constructed in 1987. The current owners purchased it in the summer of 2003 after moving to Houston with their two children. They were particularly interested in the comfortable environment provided by the covered back porch and intimate backyard along with the open floor plan of the house that would accommodate their young family’s needs. Rather than go through the challenge and timeconsuming effort associated with a new construction project, the owners chose to embark on a complete transformation and renovation of the existing home’s interiors. A major appeal of the residence was that it provided an excellent foundation and an opportunity to create a custom feel that would reflect the owners’ style. Renovation began with the kitchen because the homeowners are avid cooks and required a more functional workplace. They set out to design a space that reflects their Louisiana heritage and now serves as the primary gathering place for friends and family. Along with the kitchen, the master bath was completely redesigned as well as the remaining baths undergoing updates. The owners also completed an outdoor living area under the covered porch that remains one of their favorite spaces in the home. Finally, once most of the home had been updated, the owners completed several other initiatives including a new exercise room and custom closets.

As a registered and licensed designer for more than 11 years and business owner for more than nine, Audrey Drought-Mitchell’s main focus has been to demonstrate the highest level of professionalism through excellent business practices while maintaining open communication with both her employees and clients.

15

106 Marrakech Court ROBERT REID, ASID, AND DARIN BROOKS, RID brooks • reid studio 713.426.5236 www.brooks-reid.com Affectionately referred to during construction as “Suburban River Oaks,” this “new-old House” in Bellaire is styled after a classic home typically found in the affluent neighborhood of River Oaks, but designed to be appropriate for the family-oriented neighborhood of Bellaire. All the interior and exterior detailing reflects the age of proud craftsmanship. Brick detailing, interior moldings and millwork, high ceilings and other finish details establish this home as an example of exceptionally designed residential architecture amid a plethora of stucco neo-Mediterranean boxes. The homeowners are a young couple with two school-age children. He is an art dealer; she is an active mom who grew up in a family of homebuilders and has had her own success building the occasional house for her family and as special projects for sale. The house was intentionally designed as a “family-centric” house meant for entertaining—one where the kids would feel comfortable having friends over and where the grownups could entertain and feel equally at ease. The kitchen and family room were designed with classic details including custom-built cabinets, a true beadboard ceiling, Calacatta marble countertops with a custom butcher-block island and French doors to the rear brick terrace—with all views backing onto the nature reserve behind.

16

The main-floor powder room was inspired by a Parisian apartment—with paneled walls and ceilings lacquered black and a black and white stone floor. With an incredible collection of art to display, the designers also ensured that rooms were laid out to permit viewing of artwork from multiple perspectives.

Robert Reid, ASID IDC, and Darin Brooks, RID, formed brooks • reid studio in 2002, after relocating from New York City. Intent on providing a fresh, new design perspective to Houston, they have won many design awards for their diverse projects. Recently completed and in-the-works projects include numerous private residences, the Poggenpohl Kitchen Design Studio, the new Chocolate Bar in Rice Village and the public interiors and many residences in the 2727 Kirby residential tower.

4504 Braeburn Drive LAURA UMANSKY, ALLIED ASID Laura U Studio 713.522.0855 www.laurau.com The Challenge: to create a “vacation home” as an addition to the clients’ primary residence. This young couple with four children wished to create an entertainment space, not only for the kids, but for friends as well. The Solution: Entertaining is important to the family, and they requested a boutique hotel feel for this addition. The design team has sprinkled fun and unexpected accents throughout the home. The pool bath features a unique bubble mirror and warm and inviting colors (on the tour, note the blue glass “pebble” accent in the shower – not seen in these photos). The guest quarters have a hotel-suite layout and flow from bedroom to kitchenette to closet area. The kitchenette has two-toned wood stains to enhance the look of the upper and lower cabinetry and the faux-bois furniture adds to the natural feel of the guest room. With Arabescato marble, a frameless glass enclosure for the steam shower, and gorgeous solid granite vessel sinks we created a serene guest bath. A gorgeous mica wall covering makes the theatre room power bath the jewel of the home. An etched glass lavatory is lighted from below, and Murano glass sconces are the perfect complement to the shimmering walls. The family uses the outdoor kitchen nearly every weekend. A simple, efficient layout using Viking appliances offers everything they need for successful outdoor entertaining.

With a bachelor’s degree in studio art from the University of Texas and a master’s degree in architecture from the Gerald D. Hines college of Architecture, Laura Umansky brings classic architectural training and international design experience as well as a passion for absolute quality and individual expression to the design market. She also brings something else, her own retail boutique, the Laura U Collection, to Houston.

17

3637 Del Monte Drive SHARON STALEY, FASID Sharon Staley Interiors 713.668.9689 www.sharonstaleyinteriors.com Nestled within prestigious River Oaks, this rambling abode conveys classic soft sophistication throughout its space. Delicate glass forms and paint illusions enhance the special areas of the space. Elegant yet simple wood floors cover the formal areas of the residence. Fabulous stains and woodwork are seen throughout the home with many built-ins original to the residence. There is wonderful play of color that invokes serenity in many areas of the residence with little twists of bold rich colors in others. This remodeled residence now gives the client a refined yet livable sanctuary that is structured for the many phases of life.

Sharon Staley brings more than 40 years experience in the industry to her full-service design firm where she handles a wide range of residential, hospitality, commercial and new home construction projects. She grew up in the business— her father was a president of the Furniture Association and owned his own furniture stores in Houston, and she carries that same passion for exquisite furnishings today. She is an ASID Fellow, former president of ASID TGCC and has won numerous ASID design awards.

18

323 Terrace Drive JANE PAGE CRUMP, ASID Jane Page Design Group 713.803.4999 Janepagedesigngroup.com In this relaxing oasis away from the hectic pace of the city, “garden rooms” were planned throughout the back yard. There are four areas with tables and chairs for dining, areas with benches that overlook the fountain, and the pavilion that houses a conversation area centered on the fireplace and a cooking area with bar, gas grill, refrigerator and pizza oven. All spaces are lit at night and have surround sound. In the pavilion the TVs, lights and sound are controlled on a Crestron System. The placement of one of the TVs is perfect for karaoke. The pavilion’s beams were painted, scraped and waxed to contrast with the tongue and groove ceiling. Outdoor furniture adds to the comfort of the space. Aluminum frames of the white-cushioned furniture have a fauxwood finish to achieve the richness of wood without the maintenance. Blue Bahia granite was selected for the pavilion countertop to coordinate the blue-glass mosaic tile. Texas white limestone faces the fireplace and bar front. The cabinet frames in the pavilion are all faced with tumbled travertine highlighted by accents of Rossa Uerona marble. A “rug” inset of tile is seen in the conversation area. The field is travertine while the border combines tumbled Rossa Uerona and travertine mosaics. Custom cuts from the blue Bahia granite are seen in the corners of the stone “rug”. For additional seating, benches were designed to flank the fire-place. The pool was designed with water features, planters and colored lights. In the one gathering area, a round table is flanked on two sides by custom iron benches. The design for the benches was inspired by an antique chair. Jane-Page Crump, past president of the ASID Texas Gulf Coast Chapter and the Texas Association for Interior Design, is president and lead designer of Jane Page Design Group. For more than 25 years, her award-winning, full-service interior design firm has been one of the most respected design firms in the industry. To serve effectively an impressive client list, which includes many Fortune 500 executives, celebrities, and political notables, the firm follows a team approach – it works closely with the finest contractors and architects to ensure that their clients’ visions are met.
