What Kind of Floor Do Houston’s Flooring Experts Choose for Their Own Home? The Memorial-area home of Sam and Valerie Roberts, owners of Roberts Carpet & Fine Floors, served them well for 15 years while they were raising their three children there. When the kids grew up and moved to Austin, Sam and Valerie decided to remodel their house to make it more functional for the way they live today. Their nest is far from empty—they’re entertaining more than ever these days, and the kids are often home from Austin with friends in tow. Sam and Valerie actually needed to add onto the house to create more room and make it more hospitable for guests. And, of course, they had to add new flooring. Their company is Houston’s leading carpet and flooring specialty retail business. So, what did the flooring experts choose for their own home? Please see Page 14. Photography by Miro Dvorscak.

The Roberts Remodel By LINDA BARTH • Photography by MIRO DVORSCAK
She wanted to build new. He wanted to stay put. The solution? Sam and Valerie Roberts of Roberts Carpet & Fine Floors enlarged and remodeled their house to get the home both really wanted. And what did Houston’s flooring experts choose for their own home?
The newly redone game room with media area is furnished in sunny colors, including a sorbet-yellow leather sofa from Roberts Carpet’s Rug Gallery. “I wanted yellow in the room to give it a feeling of joy and sunshine,” Valerie says. The floor is engineered Santos Mahogany in a 3/4-inch thickness to raise the floor in the room to the same level as the den. Planks at the edge of the floor are laid in soldier rows for visual interest. The colorful Peshawar rug radiates soft, warm red and gold tones which enhance the wood floor. Also called Chobi, these rugs’ designs are inspired by nature, helping to bring the feeling of the outside indoors.
Fifteen years ago Sam and Valerie Roberts and their three young children moved into a gracious two-story home set amid the towering pines of Houston’s Memorial area. It suited the busy family’s needs perfectly, but now all three children are grown and living in Austin, and Sam and Valerie are empty nesters. “This was the time in our lives when the kids are gone to make the house fit the next phase in our lives,” explains Valerie. Their nest isn’t really empty at all. The kids return home from Austin frequently, Valerie’s two sisters from out of state love to visit, and the Roberts are always entertaining guests. Yet the house wasn’t functioning as well as Valerie wanted. “We wanted more closet space,” she says. “You know how remodels start— they just grow. One thing leads to another.” “Valerie wanted to build a house,” says Sam. He didn’t. Both of them really like the neighborhood. And so, more than a year ago, they decided to undertake a major remodel of the house. “We identified the things the house didn’t have that we wanted and added them,” Sam says. 14
WHAT THEY DID To achieve more closet space, the room that was Sam’s study at the front entry of the house was divided into two spaces—a small library off the entry and a large closet now entered from the master bedroom. That solved the closet dilemma so Sam and Valerie could each have their own closet. Sam needed a study, so a new one was added onto the back of the house. It’s a soaring space with vaulted ceiling, chandelier, and plenty of paned French windows and doors with a fabulous view of the pool and flower garden. The sunroom/exercise room off the downstairs den was once an outside patio, and its floor was recessed. To join it visually to the den, the sunroom’s floor was raised by covering it with 3/4-inch thick engineered Santos Mahogany. The top wear layer is nearly 1/4-inch thick and then mounted to a plywood core. “This floor is more indentation resistant, more dimensionally stable and scratch resistant than a solid, sand-and-finish floor,” says Sam. “It really is superior to a solid floor in virtually every way.”
house& home | S e p t e m b e r 2 0 0 9 | h o u s e a n d h o m e o n l i n e . com
The kitchen’s new floor is Mohawk porcelain tile installed in a custom modular design with four sizes of tile set in a stain-free, maintenance-free grout that resists mold and mildew. The porcelain tile was chosen for its durability; the glass accent tiles bring jewel-like sparkle to the floor. The classic, earthy tones in the breakfast room rug complement the light maple cabinets.
In the new bathroom adjacent to the teal-carpeted bedroom, the shower walls are Costa Esmeralda granite slabs installed by Roberts Carpet’s in-house fabricators. The shower floor is covered in Jurassic green stone tiles custom cut into 3-inch squares. The floral rug and painted console are from Roberts Carpet Rug Gallery.
Now the space is a game room with pool table, a wet bar on one end and a cozy media area/home theater at the other end. The media area countertops and the wet bar are covered in Imperial Gold granite, installed by Roberts Carpet’s in-house granite fabricators. With its 73-inch TV and surround-sound, the area has become a favorite of Sam’s, as well as for entertaining guests. The kitchen remained intact but was given a new floor to freshen its look. Sam and Valerie chose Mohawk porcelain tile installed in a custom modular design with four sizes of tile and decorative tile and glass liners spaced every 30 inches. UPSTAIRS DETAILS The Roberts wanted separate baths for each of the four bedrooms upstairs. Previously, the two bedrooms on each side of the house shared Hollywoodstyle baths. This configuration worked fine when the children were sharing bathrooms, but with adult visitors, separate baths would offer more privacy. Where to find the space? A large, open-air veranda that spanned the back of the house upstairs was
For his sunny new study added onto the house, Sam chose a floor of Imperial Gold granite and Santos Mahogany. “I like wood and stone together,” he says. “I like granite because it’s so durable.” The desk is from a new line of furniture available through Roberts Carpet Rug Galleries. The guitars are Sam’s; he plays them daily.
enclosed. Each end of the veranda yielded enough space for the added baths that could be accessed through the bedrooms. The central area of the enclosed veranda is now an exercise room and adjacent to it is a freshly decorated TV room. Flooring in one of the newly redone bedrooms is notable for its color and pattern. The carpet is a rich teal Stainmaster by Karastan with a cut and loop weave in a charming ribbon pattern. The carpet has a Stainmaster Ultralife warranty, featuring a 15-year no-questions-asked stain and soil warranty plus a 15-year performance warranty only available at Roberts Carpet & Fine Floors. REMODEL INSPIRES NEW FURNITURE LINE During the renovation process, Valerie visited the High Point Market in North Carolina. She selects and buys all the area rugs for Roberts Carpet and often advises customers on which rugs complement their furniture. While in High Point, Valerie decided to add a small line of furniture and accessories to Roberts Carpet’s Rug Gallery locations in Clear Lake and The Woodlands. “The whole idea is to show a vignette where you pull the colors together,” she says. “We are not a design company or studio,” says Valerie. “But I decid15
ed to add a small line of furniture and accessories to create a visual for our customers while also providing a source for interesting and unusual items.”
Upstairs, what was once a sitting room is now a TV room with easy access to the exercise room. “When you’re sitting around watching TV for awhile, what should you do? Get up and exercise,” says Valerie. “The seafoam green colors in the Peshawar rug are a perfect transition to the woven wool carpet in the exercise room. I love the soothing color combinations as well as the unique textural look in this creative product by Nourison,” she says. “A bonus is the carpet comes in a 13-foot, 9-inch width allowing installation without seams or waste.
Carpet in this newly redone guest room is a Stainmaster by Karastan with a cut and loop weave in a ribbon pattern. The carpet has a Stainmaster Ultralife warranty featuring a 15-year no-questions-asked stain and soil warranty, plus a 15-year performance warranty available only at Roberts Carpet & Fine Floors. Granite for the fireplace surround was installed by Roberts Carpet fabricators. 16
THE IKE INTERRUPTION About a month or so into the Roberts’ home remodel, Hurricane Ike blew through Houston. The crew remodeling the house boarded it up before the storm, so it did not sustain damage, however work screeched to a halt because the house was without electricity for almost three weeks. Adding to the chaos, Ike ripped much of the roof off Roberts Carpet’s Clear Lake building, and they had to divert much of their attention to remodeling their store. Now, a year later, the Clear Lake store has been renovated, and the Roberts’ remodel is complete. Sam loves his new office with its granite and mahogany floor and great views of the garden. The media area has proven to be a great place to entertain friends and family. Valerie finally has the closet space she wanted and bedrooms and bathrooms upstairs to house her many guests graciously. “Remodeling causes a little bit of upheaval,” she admits, “but I think it’s well worth it.” BELOW: A vanity from Roberts Carpet’s Rug Gallery contains plenty of drawers for accessories.
This month’s In the Spotlight is sponsored by Roberts Carpet & Fine Floors with eight locations in the greater Houston area. Call 713.926.7200 or visit www.robertscarpet.com.

CHARLIER & ASSOCIATES
By David Crossley
Houston 3.0
Walkable Urbanism is on the way Houston is going through some radical changes right now. By far the biggest is a focused return to its roots, to an old concept called Walkable Urbanism.
DOWNTOWN HOUSTON © VANHART, FOTOLIA.COM
Sixty five is a lot of origins and destinations for a young transit system. Very quickly, the Houston light rail ridership per day could be as great as any other light rail system in the US and almost certainly will be number two.1 Essentially, we will have gone from the bottom to the top in 10 years.
David Crossley is president of Houston Tomorrow, an institute for research, education, and discussion, whose mission is to improve the quality of life in the Houston region. Houston Tomorrow’s online newsmagazine is published daily at houstontomorrow.org.
In about four years, we’re going to have light rail transit service in 65 of our neighborhoods. Nearly 200,000 riders will be moving in and out of those neighborhoods by train every day. That’s going to be different.
An urban network of dispersed centers of various sizes and cultures will evolve. There will be constant civic pressure to expand the transit network to other centers, always going to centers, where the people are. In fact, that pressure is palpable everywhere in the region today. No other U.S. city is so committed to an urban light rail strategy. And, perhaps ironically, no other U.S. region is so well constructed for such a strategy. David Crossley

Boston’s Green Line is tops and will stay there, with over 220,000 riders right now. However, this line has been in operation since 1897 and is integrated with a heavy rail system.

Houston 3.0: Walkable Urbanism is on the Way That’s because the neighborhoods, which emanated out from the transit stations, were originally designed to be walkable. After all, everybody back then was a pedestrian, and amenities and services had to be close by. Many of those neighborhoods still have centers, “urban” places where people come together, often on foot or bicycle, and then fan back out to the centers surrounding sub-urban residential areas. By 1940, all the streetcar lines were gone. Houston 2.0 began in the post-World War II era of the Interstate Highway System that created a robust sub-urban economy on a vast geographic scale. That era was based on driving cars and trucks using the cheap energy we found and sold to the world. METRO SOLUTIONS PHASE II LIGHT RAIL EXPANSION MAP
We may be surprised, as we ride the trains around the city, to find that we already have some interesting neighborhoods many of us didn’t know about. We will certainly “find” a burst of hot new restaurants; some of them will indeed be new, but many have been there all along. We’ll see the emergence of places that are both origins and destinations, real neighborhoods of various sizes providing amenities and services to people who choose to live, work, learn, and play in a growing walkable urban network. I call this Houston 3.0.
Houston 1.0 and 2.0 We’ve had two big phases. Houston 1.0 was the growth from the Allen Brothers’ vision of a great city that led to efficient walkable urbanism with transit as the basis for development and regional mobility. For nearly 100 years, Downtown, the Heights, Montrose, Bellaire, and other areas, grew around Houston’s enormous streetcar system. Houston was transit-oriented and walkable for many decades. Even today, it retains its original “bones,” the street grid that one Boulder planner called the best in North America, after Portland. The people who live in those neighborhoods today drive significantly less than people who live in other areas of the region, even though the transit is long gone. 20
MAJOR ACTIVITY CENTERS WILL BE CONNECTED, CREATING WALKABLE URBANISM
“Sprawl” and “Suburban” are not the same Sprawl is disconnected, single-purpose residential developments that require inhabitants to drive everywhere for everything. It can happen anywhere and a lot of it did in the Houston region. Sub-urban, though, means something different. Montrose, the Heights, Bellaire, and the others are sub-urbs of the Central Business District, and each of those neighborhoods has centers that have residential sub-urbs.

Houston 3.0: Walkable Urbanism is on the Way In The Woodlands there is an urban area and a sub-urban area. First Colony is becoming a sub-urb of the increasingly urban and walkable City of Sugar Land. Slowly, those places look less like sprawl. In the nation, the market is rapidly moving away from sprawl, because it really doesn’t fit into the traditional continuum of natural, rural, sub-urban, and urban forms, especially given all the change drivers, such as climate change, increasing fuel and transportation costs, and rapidly changing national demographics. Everywhere in the country, and here in Houston, the big thing is Town Centers, Livable Centers. These are examples of Walkable Urbanism. The City of Waller, with 2,000 people, is designing a town center at its old town center.
in the heart of the region, in the middle of the large urban street grid and block pattern left over from Houston 1.0. Because the little 7.5-mile rail line connected the largest activity intensity center in the region -- downtown -- with the closest other large activity center -the Medical Center -- it reached its 2040 goal of 40,000 boardings a day in 2007, 33 years early. The coming phase of light rail service will reach out through the old urban streetcar grid and beyond, entering the post-1940s era’s first big Houston edge city, the Uptown/Galleria. Along the way it will go through Greenway Plaza, thus linking the top four activity centers in the region. When the new service begins, 20 percent of all the jobs in the region will be in a high-capacity transit network.
We are on the cusp of Houston 3.0. Really, we’re already in it.
Main Street — The Kickoff The City of Houston began to capitalize on its basic historic urban structure by putting the tracks for the Main Street light rail line back
There are imaginative discussions and plans for hundreds of miles of new high-capacity transit. That kind of talk is possible because the region, during 2.0, threw out a huge network of roads to establish seven great “cities”; dozens of smaller, growing cities; nearly

Houston 3.0: Walkable Urbanism is on the Way 150 towns; at least 70 master-planned communities; and thousands of neighborhoods. It may be that the creation of so many high-intensity activity centers in the Houston region leaves us positioned as perhaps the most polycentric region in the United States -- at a time when world planners are focused on this abstract vision as the basis of sustainability:
Regions with multiple centers, organized into collaborative economic clusters that form sustainable networks of access, mobility, and green infrastructure What opportunities are there, in connecting our centers, to create a new transit-based urban world within the existing sub-urban one in a way that provides many more choices and job opportunities for people?
The size of our regional population means we’ve reached a point that all big, growing regions in all the world reach, when the market moves to more self-sufficient centers of many sizes, and connects them with high-capacity transit. The second transit era has begun. That era could be the beginning of a move toward a higher quality of life, as we unravel some of the bottlenecks, take some stress out of our networks, recover greenspace, and let the market begin to fill in some blanks and offer enough of a range of lifestyle choices to lower the level of frustration that now pervades civic life. Beyond the Houston region, in the vast Texas Triangle of Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth, San Antonio, and Austin, we can see the outlines of a rail web of small centers connected to bigger centers and then cities connected to other cities by high-speed rail. Houston 3.0 is on a journey toward sustainable prosperity.

City of Kemah with Arbor Antiques Present
ANTIQUES BY THE BAY –a walk through time at the water’s edge
November 5 through November 8, 2009 • Between Highway 146 and Galveston Bay in the heart of Kemah, Texas Premiere Night on Wednesday, November 4, 2009 6-10pm • Show Hours Daily 10 to 6
This fall the City of Kemah, Texas, is launching its very first antiques fair. Scheduled for the first weekend of November, Antiques By the Bay will be a four day event bringing antiques merchants and antiques lovers together in the quaint Galveston Bay village of Kemah. To help build what the city hopes will become a week long event, Kemah has enlisted the services of veteran Round Top Show promoter Curtis Ann Davis, president of Arbor Antiques Services. Davis has a 12-acre show in Round Top and brings lots of experience to the helm of this project. Davis says she is excited about helping Kemah build its event, and her first order of business is to fill the tents with fabulous antiques and art. “Texas is a great place for antiquing, and it is important to have the quality and variety of antiques that both designers and collectors appreciate and have come to expect. It is my goal to build on that standard of excellence at this show. We have already had lots of good response from antique dealers from Texas and surrounding states interested in doing the
show. And many of my Round Top east coast dealers have already committed as well. However, we want to fill to capacity and need more dealers.” “Kemah already has so much to offer,” Davis adds. “It is home to the third largest recreational fleet in the U.S., it has a Boardwalk and Amusement Area with regularly scheduled events and music, it has great restaurants and B&Bs; adding this annual antique event will put icing on the cake.” Nestled on the bay between Houston and Galveston, Kemah has all the charm one would hope to find in a sleepy coastal village with close proximity to a thriving major city and a historical coastal island. Antiques dealers interested in show space can contact Arbor Antiques at its home base in Alvin, Texas, by calling toll free 281.388.1075 or 888.233.5414, by visiting the show Web site at www.antiquesbythebaykemah.com or by e-mailing curtisann@arborantiques.com. That’s Soooo Houston
That quintessential Houston look? What is it?
...
By GABRIELLE COSGRIFF
© NATALIA LISOVSKAYA - FOTOLIA.COM
We know it when we see it – “Oh, yes, that’s soooo Houston!” But how to define it in terms of how we live, what we cherish about our particular – some would say peculiar – residential style is not so easy to pin down. But hey, this is Houston, so in keeping with that can-do, leap-into-the-unknown spirit, we decided to give it a shot. Freelance journalist
Greeti ngs:
y to It’s oka n! Housto
Gabrielle Cosgriff asked several perceptive, engaged Houstonians to share their thoughts on what it is about this urban, homey, car-choked, leafy, contrary kaleidoscope of a city that makes it home.

Dave Thompson of ttweak, co-author of HIWI (Houston. It’s Worth It): Everybody talks about Houston’s diversity, its lack of zoning, but I prefer to call it permissiveness – the idea that it’s okay to do what you want regardless of your neighbors. You don’t have that keeping-up-withthe-Joneses so much here. If I want to put pink flamingoes on my lawn or cover my house with beer cans that’s okay. My accountant painted her house bright orange with a purple trim and that was fine with her homeowners’ association. It’s the aggregation of these things that make it so Houston. Take that stretch of Buffalo Speedway between Bissonnet and Holcombe: You’ve got all kinds of architecture there – ranch-style houses, cottages, Tudor, faux chateaux, that crazy “Darth Vader” house with the big black triangle. Will I see a Colonial? Yes! A bungalow? Yes! A contemporary? Yes! It’s bizarre. I love it. It’s just an extraordinary freedom of expression.
Carrie Shoemake, Houston architect: It’s hard to talk about Houston architecturally. It was formed with a wildcatter, I-can-do-this mentality, so there’s a broad mix of vernaculars. The things that move the senses here are the green – that soothing aspect of shade trees and green hues and how that affects our buildings and the quality of the light – and the sky, the fragrances, the seasonal aspect, like in the spring, the first sight of those beautiful tulip magnolia trees. Our humidity also affects the light and the sky, especially our sunsets – such a theater of colors, light and refraction. Because we’re in air-conditioning so much, we need to be able to access the outside – screened porches and ways to balance the light. We can have it come into a room from more than one direction to reduce the glare – a result of the moisture in our air. We can place windows so the light moves seasonally around the room. It reminds us that we’re part of the solar system, it’s free and we can all experience it. And in Houston, it helps make up for our lack of seasons.

That’s Soooo Houston A John Staub-designed Tudor manor house
Scott Ballard, Houston residential architect: The best of Houston architecture goes back to John Staub, mostly his pre-World War II houses. Drive up and down North and South Boulevards, through River Oaks – they’re beautifully composed, striking, an East Coast vocabulary but with glorious views of Houston’s oaks. Now you see a lot of Staub wannabees, big West U and River Oaks McMansions, lots of pillars. Houston’s such an entrepreneurial place, some people have made a lot of money and they try to duplicate that look. But for people with less money, who want to do something different, their own taste and their own art can complement anything a designer can do. In Houston, if you have a good idea, people are willing to let you do it, to sit back and see what happens. It has allowed me to do some off-the wall things, to be an artist as well as an architect.
MIRO DVORSCAK NORM ARNOLD
Rick Lowe, founder of Houston’s Project Row Houses: I just came back from a trip, and was reminded how great it is to get back to Houston. My Third Ward neighbors still sit out on the porch and you get that friendly wave and that nod. Houston’s a big city but it’s gifted with these small-town touches. Conversely, it always puzzles me how we develop neighborhoods, nice houses, trees, and then – boom! out of nowhere here’s this big, threestory townhouse that’s just plugged itself in there. We have this extreme juxtaposition that always makes me cringe. And there’s a great folk art atmosphere here – not just publicly, but in how people live. People make things all the time. I know a guy who covers tables with matchsticks. It’s just something he does. Another guy had a room full of masks that he would make for fun and give away. It’s a renegade, kind of outsider, attitude, but it’s not strange. In fact in Houston it’s a compliment. 28
Elouise (Ouisie) Jones, owner of Ouisie’s Table: I’ve lived in all kinds of houses and loved them all because you can express yourself, it’s a creative outlet. My husband Harry and I chose every plant in our garden – I told him we had to call it a garden because we’d spent far too much money on it to keep calling it a yard. We have a plethora of bamboo because I think it’s so gorgeous that a grass can grow to 65 feet tall. In early summer, the shoots come up like asparagus.

My grandmother was very conscious of that creativity, not anything pretentious, just graceful and livable. She passed that down to my mother and to us. I still have the big conch shells she used as doorstops, before air-conditioning, to catch the breezes. I love them. But I also adore air-conditioning. It’s my favorite invention, and I love ceiling fans in the house, on the porch. I like the activity they create. But air-conditioning has a lot to do with why many of us live in boxes. You need vistas and views to enjoy interiors. I believe in bringing the outside in – people did that naturally before air-conditioning. Now, we build for air-conditioning first, then it goes out and we don’t know how to act.

That’s Soooo Houston Carlos Jimenez, architect: Houston is either maligned or celebrated for its lack of zoning. This driven city has become a vast yet often wasteful and unmitigated field where everything grows or sprouts. The city’s elusive context and frontier spirit do not automatically mean an indifference to place. In fact, Houston becomes ever more interesting once we understand the singularity of its physical determinants – its agile infrastructure or abundant treescape. Thus a marvelous live oak, a particular view, a distinct quality of light, a porous wall, or a shaded garden acquires greater significance as it profits the project’s life. In this regard a work such as Discovery Green, our downtown park, is exemplary in its many contributions to the city’s betterment. It encapsulates the enlightened merger of business and public space. It is an enterprise that transcends many times over the myopic rules of profit for profit’s sake.
Discovery Green park is playful Candice Schiller, design director, Schiller Del Grande Restaurant Group: The nature of the city sets the tone for its architecture, and that’s what we’ve tried to express in our new place – Houston’s great fashion and art and design and its rich, environment. Plus, we are all products of our past, and RDG + Bar Annie is the evolution of Café Annie. We have floral, happy fabrics downstairs, then gold and red, for a rich saloon aspect, in the bar, and the grill room is done in brown leathers and fabrics, all epitomizing different facets of the city. You can see the outside, views of our great architecture, from just about anywhere inside. There’s a welcoming, communal green granite table in the bar, and we have a lovely encaustic tile floor with an old Cuban design, a little reference to Houston’s past, like you’d find in 1920s and ’30s houses. Medically and in business and energy Houston is second to none, but in that sense of freedom and openness we’re still like the old west. Chances are always good that innovation will be well received.
The new Bar Annie references Houston’s past and present

That’s Soooo Houston Richard Holley, interior designer: There is a tradition here of individuals and families who have made it big and give back big. So many of our arts institutions have been founded by, funded by and supported by Houstonians. We’re blessed with people who aren’t afraid to step up to the plate, if not with money, then with time and talent. It’s enormously democratic – anybody can participate. This exuberance, this vibrancy, that Houstonians bring to the arts reflects itself in our homes. Houston used to have a really conservative mindset. Georgian furniture was a religion. Then people came along like [designer] Herbert Wells, who was so unafraid of color and mixing things up, and the Menils, who showed people there was a different, more relaxed way to live. Now, people are less afraid of contemporary or abstract art, of photography as art. Our institutions, large and small, our galleries, have opened our eyes. Local talent flourishes.
Suzanne Theis, Discovery Green program director, longtime Orange Show Art Car Parade executive director: To me, it’s the mix of people that makes for those great Houston moments: I always think of the Art Car Ball – rich people, poor people, artists, bankers –all kinds celebrating together, people become performers, with their costumes and instruments. That’s what’s lovable about our city, unlike other cities, where it can take generations to become established. Here, you have a good idea, energy, chutzpah, you can make it. I remember an Eye-Opener tour when I took a bunch of folks, some from River Oaks, to the Third Ward to see the Flower Man’s place. Then I’d see these River Oaks gardens begin to reflect that – putting different flowers together, a riot of color. The downside of a city that constantly reinvents itself is the loss of so many historical landmarks. But the upside is that it’s consistently fresh, always moving forward. I’m a preservationist, but I’ve come to appreciate that forwardthinking energy, that always looking to tomorrow that makes Houston Houston.

Interior design by Richard Holley
Interior design by David Stone David Stone, longtime Houston interior designer: Houston is so cosmopolitan, with so many different influences. The way people live -- you get off an elevator in a condo and all of a sudden you think you’re in Venice or Florence, not vulgar, but with great style. Or you could just as easily walk into a contemporary home and it has three pieces of furniture. It’s my job to do what’s appropriate for Houston: for example, I’m not going to upholster a lot of furniture in mohair plush. Houstonians tend to be more eclectic, and to take themselves less seriously. Many of them have interesting homes, whereas if they lived in New York or on the West Coast they might not be so individualistic. Someone with a very formal living room might still have a throw tossed casually on a couch. That Houston air-conditioning can get a bit chilly.

That’s Soooo Houston Teresa O’Connor, installation artist, owner Hello-Lucky boutique: Houston has many affordable artists’ spaces and that just breeds the artistic spirit that pumps through this city. We’re fearless, unapologetic. We mix ideas, colors, fabrics and ethnicities. This was a table leg, now it’s a shelf bracket. But we’re also nostalgic. Even if we don’t know an object’s history we respect the fact that it has a history. to It’s okay The cultural part of the city is not obvious – like, say, New Elm in Dallas. My friend Dean Haddock designed a T-shirt that says “It’s okay to ‘heart’ Houston.” I like that understatement. (So do New Yorkers. He moved there and is always being asked where he got his shirt.) It’s like people who tell me they love seeing that little piñata place right next to the Glass Wall restaurant. That’s why people fight when developers come in and want to homogenize everything.
uston heart Ho Teresa wears a T-shirt designed by her friend, Dean Haddock. Proceeds from shirt sales benefit Houston’s Spacetaker Artist Resource Center, which helped Haddock reestablish his career after he fled Hurricane Katrina.
Lisa Gray, Houston Chronicle columnist: Houston robs you of your longterm memory. “What used to be there?” you ask all the time. What was there before that new skyscraper? Before that block of townhouses? Driving down a street you used to know, you can't find your old landmarks – the fourplex where your friend used to live, the bungalow where you played poker, the building where that great Jewish bakery was. The first time you miss something, you wonder: “Am I remembering that right?” But over time, the old place fades from your memory; there's nothing to remind you of the friend, of the poker games, of those macaroons. The effect is like having Alzheimer's, only in reverse: You live in the present. Your past disappears.

Houston gardens are becoming wilder, more colorful and informal Suzanne Longley, landscaping business owner, former Houston Ballet prima ballerina. Houston used to be mostly green, with not much color, but that’s changed in the past 30 years. Our gardens have become a lot more sophisticated. You don’t have so many of those little “moustache” landscapes – those symmetrical plantings on either side of the front door. We’re getting into native plants and a wilder landscape, more informal. And of course, our trees – we have an amazing variety of colors, shapes and blooms, not just live oaks and pines. Two things I’ve been noticing: Right now, with our water situation, and with global warming looming, I see a big push to native plants. We need to use these plants. We have all these marvelous colors and shapes to pick from. And Houstonians are embracing water features, which go well in almost any garden – not anything ornate, necessarily, maybe a small urn or trickling fountain. And one thing we Houstonians do well to remember: it’s about 10 degrees cooler in the shade of a tree.

They will persistently scour every inch of the show to find things at the best price from knowledgeable dealers who come from all over the country. Here’s a peek at some of the dealers coming to this fall’s show Tuesday, Sept. 29 through Saturday, Oct. 3. Marburger Farm dealer Murielle Aberger of The French Influence Antiques will bring bleached wood furniture and a 19th-century Louis XV armoire from Paris. She will also offer paintings, prints and 1,000 of the old French paperback books that she binds into bundles tied with twine. David Fishbein and his wife Gloria Lopez of City Different Antiques in Santa Fe, N.M., and Studio City, Calif., will bring early photography, trade signs, folk art and textiles. Mother-daughter team Peggy McFarland and Michelle Flowers of Ogden, Utah, will offer
everything from antique fish decoys to crystal chandeliers to vintage tutus. Pat and Karen Kenny of South Porch Antiques in Parma, N.Y., and their ten-year-old daughter, Bonnie, will bring Pat’s unusual collection of architectural fragments from buildings and carnivals. He also deals American furniture ranging from country chic to more industrial urban styles. Margaret Bostick of The Silk Purse Antiques in Atlanta reports from a train in France at midnight, “It’s very hot in the south of France, but I have worked every day to find the most unusual items.” So far, that includes 18th- and 19th-century Italian chandeliers, big silver mirrors and “very organic 19th-century pottery from Belgium.” Why settle for bland? Join nearly 400 vendors at Marburger Farm to stand up for antiques--the beautiful, the rare, the worn, the cherished. Stand up for personality and patina and the quirky. Stand up for the memory of that day, of who was with you, of the barbecue in the air and the hay underneath.

The Cobbler Gets New Shoes
After A new cabinet-depth refrigerator is housed in a tall cabinet. Pine wraps the furdowns to add height. New mosaic backsplash tile, Giallo Antico granite and an LCD TV installed by Overstreet Audio/Video really changed this kitchen. Wood Electric brought the electrical up to code.

This month, “Do It Yourself Decorating” is a bit different because it features my own kitchen, recently remodeled on a budget. Like a lot of folks during January and February, my husband and I stayed home after work and did not eat out or spend unnecessarily. While at home, we looked around and it became obvious that our circa 1950 kitchen we remodeled in l980 when we bought our house was very tired. We had mismatched appliances, laminate countertops and inadequate storage--resulting in cluttered countertops. Why the kitchen became intolerable in 2009 with the economy in the dumpster is another issue. Creating beautiful

Black 24-inch ovens, electric coil cooktop, sheetrock furdowns, a too-large, blocky island, dated hardware and laminate countertops needed an update. The 50/50 divided sink was not user- friendly for soaking skillets and the faucet was boring..

Painting the broom closet and desk area the same color (Pratt & Lambert “Foam”) makes the kitchen feel larger. A restyled cane seat chair (put out by a neighbor for heavy trash pickup) adds charm to the newly uncluttered desk space. LEFT: Adding more storage to a 1950s kitchen is key. Rev-a-Shelf’s double lazy Susan in a cabinet corner, along with pull-out pantry and pull-out trash can made our kitchen more functional.

ISLAND? Our ranch house, built in l950, had original dark pecky cypress cabinets which we “pickled” ourselves with white stain in l980 (along with the parquet wood floors.) Because it was too costly to stain all the floors in the house a darker color for contrast or to replace the cabinets, I made the decision to rebuild the too-large island and open it up with columns from www.tablelegs. com. Miracle-worker Sammie Cockrell of Faux FX stained the island and barstools French green (C2 Paints “Immersion”), topped

diy decorating with a sheer green-black glaze) to create the contrast-y look I was after. She also expertly blended the kitchen’s new wood with the old wood. When it is too costly to create contrast by replacing cabi> nets or floors, then rebuilding, staining / painting your island a pretty color is a budget-friendly solution.
tip
My dear talented friend, Kathryn Precourt, (www.kathrynprecourthome.com), came to Houston and stayed with me in January. We bought “Vinna” pulls from IKEA and shopped for LG appliances at Best Buy. She acted as my sounding board via emailed photos and helped me take Swale’s recommendations and translate them into good-looking, effective budget solutions, including introducing me to www.rev-a-shelf.com. Since that introduction, we have added all kinds of Rev-A-Shelf storage systems to the insides of our existing cabinets: a pull-out pantry, a pair of double lazy Susans in the once dead corners of the lower cabinets, a pull-out trash can under the sink, a utensil drawer insert, a hanging wine glass storage rack in an upper cabinet and vertical racks to store baking pans in the cabinet over the ovens. Needless to say, in a small, l950s kitchen, adding storage is key. Splurging on cabinet storage and retrofitting existing cabi-

and refrigerator were not large enough, and those had to be altered. Then, I figured, if we were altering the openings, we should add a working drawer in the dummy panel under the ovens. The island had always been too large, so it was scaled down with open legs from www.tablelegs.com at one end. And since the new tall refrigerator cabinet threw off the vertical balance, white pine was applied to the left and right furdowns, which visually balanced the entire room. Then we were told the wiring, plumbing and gas had to be brought up to code—a surprising expense we had not anticipated. TIP: Kitchens are like dominoes—you fix one thing and
tip> that makes the next item look “tired”. Pretty soon, you knock ‘em all down.
It is good to have a reserve of 25 to 50 percent over your budget for “oops” factors (“oops”, the wiring needs to be redone; “oops” that gas line needs to be moved; “oops” the new sink requires moving plumbing drain lines.) It’s the “oops” that can kill your budget. Because the new island was smaller, Forsyth Floor Company installed new parquet in the “holes” and the floors were hand- finished and stained by McAllen Scott. Since I do this for a living, I acted as general contractor in between client appointments and we lived with the construction chaos daily. At night, my husband and I painted the insides of every single drawer and cabinet with bright white enamel and cleaned and resized the clear plastic shelf liners.
The makeover started out simply enough with new hardware, appliances, countertops and backsplashes. Then we realized the openings for the ovens

trade secrets
It’s wise to add at least 25 percent padding to your
tip> budget for “oops” factors -- to handle unexpected wiring, water leaks, and other remodeling surprises.
• Think “green”. Rethinking your cabinets and giving unneeded items to charity keeps them out of the landfill and repurposes them. • Take snapshots of your kitchen as you go. That is how I knew the island and barstool tops had to be stained green—there was little contrast between the floor and the cabinets.
LIVING WITH CHAOS When we began this project, we had the same fears that my clients have about costs, what to expect and how long it would take. My advice is to prepare for major disruption for 2 to 4 months. At one point we had the old refrigerator in the entry hall and then we had to move it to the front porch for a week. Our kitten would bolt out the door in the sleepy early morning hours, and we would chase her all over the front yard in our jammies. We had card tables set up everywhere with our kitchen contents on top, and for weeks couldn’t find a thing. Like many clients, we were washing dishes in the bathtub. By far the hardest part of the process was weeding out > the plethora of items in our cabinets.
tip
There were so many unused items (Do you really need a butter- curling tool?) Local charities received an SUV carload of “extras” and a church took our old cooktop and wall oven, which made me happy because they were repurposed. As a result of having just gone through this empathy-building experience, never again will I react the same way when a client says, “all I want are new countertops, backsplash and appliances.” There is so much more involved. But in the end it is worth it, and you will be very happy you updated your kitchen.
• Appliances are a huge expense. If possible, take them out of your budget and save your precious cash for labor and materials. Buy appliances on sale (12 to 18 months / no interest same as cash) or from a scratch and dent outlet. • Sometimes the most effective strategy is to not add on to your kitchen but first rethink the footprint under roof that is already paid for.

The glory of the home’s entry is its ball-and-dowel wood fretwork over the transom and hall. Pam was able to save the original floors caked with mud from Ike by following Bill’s advice. Instead of washing the mud out with water, she let it dry a month, then swept it away. In the living room doorway: Emma Houston.

fter 40 years of living in Houston, Pam Houston was ready for a change. She had lost her husband, Houston PR man and design writer Sam Houston, to cancer; friends had moved; children had started their own lives around the country.
THAT LONG NIGHT LAST
SEPTEMBER, THE ROAD TO RECOVERY, AND WHY SHE STILL LOVES HER
ISLAND HOME.
“I was ready to get out of the city—there was really nothing keeping me there anymore, but I didn’t know where I wanted to go,” says Pam. “On a lark I decided to come down to Galveston with a friend to see a house that she was looking at buying. After lunch I thought ‘Well…living here could be fun’.” Pam looked at one house—an 1898 two-story in the East End Historical District and her decision was made. She would make a new home for herself in Galveston. 67
“It was the first and only house I looked at,” says Pam. “I saw it at 3 on a Saturday afternoon and by Monday they’d accepted my offer.” Within weeks the sale went through, but it’s with a certain amount of amazement that Pam remembers signing the papers to purchase the house. “Do you know when I closed on this house? September 13, 2007.” Exactly one year before the worst hurricane in over a century would strike the Texas coast. After she closed on the house, Pam enlisted the help of friend and noted Houston interior designer Herbert Wells to guide her in her choices of paint and fabric. “Wainscoting Gray” went on living and dining room walls, wood trim was painted “Marshmallow” and for the front door, Wells specified a sassy coral-red “Geranium.” For the large antique sofa in the living room, Wells blessed Pam’s choice of a bright floral print fabric by Brunschwig & Fils. Once the cosmetic redo was complete, Pam settled comfortably into the house and grew to love Island life. THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM
Fast forward 364 days to Friday, September 12, 2008. Weighing the mixed messages from the media and local officials with her own suspicion that Category 2 Ike will continue to head east, Pam turned to an old friend, Bill Beveridge, who had helped her board up her house. “I said ‘If you’ll stay with me, I’ll stay’. He said ‘I stay for them all.’” On Friday morning the eye of the storm was still 18 hours out; the skies were blue and there was no significant wind, but when Bill took his dog for a walk that afternoon he saw that water was rising into the street near Pam’s house. He decided they should both seek higher ground several blocks away at a weekend house that he managed.
“I don’t think anyone closed an eye that night…” “At 7 o’clock Friday night we lost power,” recalls Pam. “From then on it was totally dark. I don’t think anyone closed an eye that night. You would hear terrible crashes and not know where they were coming from. After the eye went over (at approximately 2 a.m. Saturday) that was the scariest part. The wind was so terrible it sounded like someone was screaming for four hours.” Pam’s thoughts stayed with her new home. “From the house we were in we could occasionally see the black flood waters come up over the fence outside. Then they’d subside a little. Then they’d come back higher. I knew there had to be water in my house,” says Pam. NO TIME TO MOPE
Pam’s collection of mercury glass rests on an 18th-century lowboy that belonged to Pam’s maternal great-grandfather.
68
By daybreak, with the worst of the storm passed, Pam tried to make it the four blocks to her home, but the flood waters still covered the road. “It took me two trips before I could get all the way to my house. And once I got here I didn’t have the nerve to go in.” Pam asked Bill to make the trip with her so that she wouldn’t have to face the scene alone. By the end of the storm, two feet of gray, muddy saltwater had flooded the inside of her house (though the total surge for the neighborhood was approximately 6 feet, Pam’s house, like most on the Island, is raised up several feet). In addition to an extensive layer of mud, the waters had flipped her

The dining room chairs upholstered in fabric chosen by Houston designer Herbert Wells were soaked with muddy saltwater from Ike. Every day Pam hauled them out into the sun, then moved them inside at night. The upholstery survived well. The 19th-century corner cupboard was Pam’s maternal grandmother’s. Above the bookcase, at right, is “Night Heron” by Galveston artist Rene Wiley. Yellow vases on the chest, at left, are from Cool Stuff, a Houston shop whose owners fled Hurricane Katrina. 69
large, long antique couch with the Brunschwig & Fils fabric she so loved and rammed it into the wall. Her refrigerator had also been turned on its back and wedged in a corner. “It was a disaster,” says Pam. “But you take it in for a moment and after that it’s straight to work. There was really no time to mope.” Bill agrees, “I never had Ike-itis like some people did, where you’re distraught and traumatized. I just got to work.” Galveston had no electric power or fresh water after the storm. Bill set up a grill on the street and cooked breakfast and dinner for about 50 people a day—to whomever showed up—for about a month. The food came from freezers in the weekend houses he manages; the homeowners asked him to use the food. “We were eating better than the mayor and others,” Bill recalls with a smile. “We even had a few restaurant owners there.” Later, the Galveston Daily News honored Bill with the Unsung Hero Award 2009 “for unselfish efforts in making Galveston county a better place to live.” THE ROAD HOME
Though the decision to stay is a controversial one, neither Pam nor Bill have any regrets, and in fact found many things to be grateful for following the storm. While many homeowners were denied access to the Island for two and a half weeks, Pam was able to get straight to work, saving nearly all of her family’s antiques (in the end only the antique sofa was lost), and preventing mold from infesting her house. Even upholstered furniture was salvaged beautifully. “My dining chairs, my loveseat— every morning I would haul them out into the sun. Every evening I would haul them back inside before the 6 p. m. curfew,” says Pam. “I did that every day for a month and now you can’t tell that anything happened to them.” Bill’s quick thinking lead to several more success stories around the house. “The first thing I wanted to do was clean the mud off the floors,” says Pam, “But Bill said ‘No, let them dry first’.” According to Bill, who had experience with a low-lying lake house 70
house& home | S e p t e m b e r 2 0 0 9 | h o u s e a n d h o m e o n l i n e . com
growing up, cleaning the fresh, sticky mud off the floors at that point would have required large amounts of water—essentially re-soaking the hardwoods and causing them to cup. Once the mud was dry a month later it could be easily swept up with a damp cloth. “The floor never buckled,” says Pam. “There’s still some mud between the boards if you look closely, but I kind of like that. I’m careful not to vacuum it up—it gives it character.” Antiques filled with linens and books presented an additional dilemma—when the fibrous contents flooded they caused the drawers to swell shut, a potentially fatal problem for both the antiques and contents. Bill helped Pam carefully remove the backs of the furniture, allowing the contents to be removed and the antiques to air out. In the months that followed, recovery continued including an extensive kitchen remodel which Bill helped her with (the pressed wood cabinets and appliances did not fare well in the flood), replanting of most of the salt-soaked landscape, and an entire redo of the lower lying guest house. Pam made an offer to Bill, whose rental house had been damaged in the storm—if he wanted to renovate the guest house he was welcome to live in it. And so the friendship continued as both Pam and Bill each helped the other recover from the storm.
ABOVE: The storm-tossed kitchen had to be totally redone, including new appliances. Pam chose simple replacement materials. Bill installed cabinets from Home Depot and laid the black-and-white tile. Pink flamingo lights, along with a growing collection of flamingo glasses and drink stirrers, remind visitors they’re on the Island. OPPOSITE PAGE: A glorious stained window in a niche off the kitchen survived Ike’s winds.

In Bill’s cozy living room, a framed flag above the console is the one his father, a Major in the U.S. Marines, captured with the men under his command at Guadalcanal in World War II. On the table sits Bill’s award for heroism, a glass trophy the Galveston Daily News gave him inscribed “Unsung Hero Award 2009.” He manned a grill on the street for about one month after Ike, feeding Galvestonians who had no food, electricity or potable running water.
A BRIGHT FUTURE
These days a “Historical Galveston Rebirth” banner hangs outside Pam’s quaint front door and a bronze plaque commemorating the waterline from Ike hangs a few feet below an older plaque commemorating the house as a 1900 Storm Survivor. “These Galveston houses have been through a lot,” says Bill, “and they can handle a lot.” Though Pam’s spirit marches ever forward, she’s found unique and even charming ways to commemorate the events of the last year throughout the house. An avid art collector, many of Pam’s latest pieces reflect the storm and recovery. A painting by local artist Rene Wiley commemorates the last day that the damaged Murdoch’s Bathhouse was standing over the Gulf. A wrinkled, flood-ravaged black and white coffee table book titled The Galveston that Was now hangs poignantly in a silver shadow box frame in her kitchen, col72
lages of objects found post-Ike by Martha Terrill hang in the entry, and a large color-infused painting over the fireplace was a recent find at the local storm damaged shop Antiques Warehouse. In looking towards the future Bill says, “I think the Island will be better than it was before. People are doing things to their houses and their yards that they wouldn’t have before. Businesses are retooling and coming back stronger.” Pam agrees: “I’ve loved living here. I love this house, the back porch and the garden. I love the whole lifestyle on the Island. There’s no traffic, I can go to the beach, there are so many fun, nice people here, and there’s so much to do.” Pam may be the ultimate Island convert, having only found a reason to cross back over the causeway five times since moving here. “I moved here on a whim in September 2007, and I’ve never looked back.”

6 Cool Season Annuals 2. Violas Violas make mounds of foliage and flowers about 6 inches tall. Leaves and flowers are smaller than those of pansies, but the flowers look like pansy flowers. Violas are a little more cold hardy than pansies and do very well in containers where cold winds can often whip around the pots. Prepare beds for violas just as you would for pansies, and plant them in full sun.
3. Dianthus
Iceland poppies
Dianthus, or pinks, have flowers about the size of a nickel, and the edges of the petals look as if they have been cut with pinking shears. Dianthus has attractive, narrow foliage that makes a mound about 4 inches to 6 inches tall. Flower stems rise above the foliage to a height of about 6 inches to 8 inches. Flowers come in crimson, bright red, pink, coral and white and have the wonderful scent of cloves. Dianthus may bloom lightly during fall and winter, but they bloom full strength in spring.
Relatively mild winters in Houston make it possible for
4. Snapdragons
gardeners to enjoy a second growing season with an altogether
These upright plants produce spikes of flowers in red, orange, yellow, white, purple and pink, and the flowers have a mild and delightful fragrance. They are excellent for cutting. As with dianthus, snapdragons may bloom a little bit during the fall and winter, but they release the full force of their floral fortitude in spring. There’s nothing prettier than a garden planted with the blooming spikes of snapdragons. Snapdragons come in different sizes. The ‘Liberty’ series reaches a height of about 18 inches or so and does not need staking. The ‘Rocket’ series reaches a height of 3 feet but may need to be staked. Because of their height, snapdragons should be placed in the middle to the back of the border.
different palette of plant material. It’s nice to change from the hot weather plants to the cool season plants. Now’s the time to plan for winter annuals in your garden. They should be planted in late October and early November. Here are some common as well as lesser-known winter annuals.
1. Pansies Pansies are our most popular cool season annuals. With their showy flowers in a wide array of colors, they lend a colorful and cheerful look to the winter landscape. Plant them in well-drained soil enriched with organic matter in full sun. After preparing the bed but before planting, scatter a granular fertilizer such as ColorStar over the bed and then plant the pansies in the bed. The analysis of ColorStar is 19-13-6, which refers to the percentage of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, respectively, in the fertilizer. Nitrogen will boost leaf growth, and phosphorus will boost flowering. Potassium strengthens cell walls and makes the plants better able to withstand cold temperatures. After planting, mulch the beds with an organic mulch. Pansies come with “faces” (blotches) or as solid colors. Larger-flowering pansies such as ‘Majestic Giants’ may produce larger flowers, but the smaller-flowering pansies such as the ‘Crown’ series produce a greater abundance of flowers. A single color makes a bed stand out more than a bed with many different colors. A bed with 80 percent of one color with a 20 percent border of a different color makes a strong statement, too. Mixed colors are fun, though, and add a whimsical touch to the landscape. Consider any of the following mixtures of three different solid colors: 1) blue, purple and white; 2) azure blue, orange and pale yellow; 3) dark blue, white and pale yellow.

5. Flowering Cabbage and Kale Not all winter color comes from flowers. Flowering cabbage and kale produce large heads of colorful and leafy foliage. Colors include white, pink and purplish-red. Cabbage, as a rule, has smoother margins; kale, on the other hand, often has fringe-like leaf margins and is very decorative. One variety of kale, ‘Red Bor,’ has especially curly foliage in a dark purple color. ‘Red Bor’ looks great in containers or beds in combination with coordinating colors of pansies or violas.
6. Iceland Poppies Surprisingly, Iceland poppies don’t even come from Iceland. Papaver nudicaule is native to subarctic Asia but has been crossed with other species of poppies to create what we call Iceland poppies. These poppies send up 2-foot slender stems topped with 2-inch to 4-inch flowers in a range of bright and bold colors that include orange, red, yellow, apricot, pink, salmon, cream and white. Iceland poppies can be planted in fall in 4-inch pots or larger in full sun, but they won’t start blooming until spring. ‘Champagne Bubbles’ is a popular cultivar of Iceland poppies that reaches a mature height of 16 inches. Let your fall garden become inspiring with a beautiful combination of cool season flowers.
