Avid antiques enthusiasts are gearing up for their season as well. September and October are peak months for antiques festivals and fairs in Houston and across our region. We’ve added a full page of scoop on antiques events to help serious collectors and greenhorns ready their game plans.

Many of these antique shows are still going strong after attracting countless buyers and dealers for decades. The Houston Antiques Dealers Association’s Fall Antiques Show & Sale is in its 46th year, while the legendary Original Round Top Antiques Fair celebrates 44 years this fall.

Speaking of local antiques institutions, the Antique Pavilion, at 2311 Westheimer Rd., marks its 20th anniversary this year. For those who can’t make it to one of the major antiques events this fall, a tour of the Antique Pavilion’s 60 dealers can be your own personal antiques festival on any day you choose.

We know you’ll get inspired with our two antiques-focused feature stories this month. Writer/photographer Mary Chavoustie’s has been combing the Round Top area since the spring for great stories to share with Houston House & Home’s antiques aficionados.

Hunting Season Antlers and animal hides aren’t just for the gun-toting guys in camouflage – the fall is full of antiques events from here to the hill country.

HADA Fall Antiques Show & Sale Sept. 16-18 The Houston Antiques Dealers Association presents the spectacular Fall Antiques Show & Sale at the George R. Brown Convention Center in downtown Houston. HADA is America’s oldest association of antiques dealers, established in 1964. The show is an all air-conditioned opportunity to shop one of the most respected antique shows in the country and a Houston tradition that gives back to the community. Peruse approximately 150 national and international exhibitor’s booths with merchandise from around the world to discover extraordinary treasures from museum-worthy furniture to scintillating objects of arts. The Original Round Top Antiques Fair Sept. 28 - Oct. 1 This phenomenal event, now in its 44th year, has grown into an all-out antiques extravaganza, spawning more than 50 satellite shows in and around Round Top, Texas in Fayette County. The official Round Top venues include the Big Red Barn & Tent, Continental Tent and Carmine Dance Hall. The iconic Big Red Barn & Tent features early Americana items, Texas primitives, and Continental furniture and accessories. The Continental Tent, which debuted in the Fall of 2008, offers high quality items from England, France, Italy, Spain, and other European countries. In nearby town of Carmine, the Carmine Dance Hall is a quieter venue, but has been a treasured part of the antiques fair since it began. For shoppers’ convenience, porters are on hand to carry items to vehicles, shippers are on site for large items, buildings are air conditioned and there is on-site free parking.

Marburger Farm Antique Show Sept. 27- Oct. 1 For 15 years, the Marbuger Farm Antique Show has been a part of the extended Round Top experience. This fall’s edition hosts close to 400 exhibitors from 38 states and nations. The show opens Tuesday for a special early buying day from 10 am until 2 pm. Regular admission begins at 2 pm and continues until 5 pm that day. Shopping continues Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 9 to 5 and on Saturday 9 to 4 pm. Now in its 23rd year, The Round Top Folk Art Fair gathers artisans from across Texas and and the U.S. who present an interesting a mix of objects from fashions to Folk Art. Expect to see quilts, pillows, fashions, art in many forms from formal to folk art. Located in the Round Top Arts Center at the edge of Round Top. Small Town Treasures

By Mary Chavoustie Highway 290 to Austin is a busy thoroughfare the first two weekends of April and October as antique lovers reconnect with their favorite dealers.

Smart shoppers know the back roads and which small towns offer great finds every week of the year.

For over 50 years, Frazier’s in Hempstead has satisfied yearnings for everything concrete. Elegant fountains to whimsical pigs are spread across eight acres, making it hard to choose a favorite.

Burton is famous for it’s annual Cotton Gin Festival but owner/designer Heidi Matthies-Jaster has her own following with The Nesting Company.

Customers can select the perfect nature-themed gift to go with one of Matthies-Jaster’s fresh floral arrangements.

The magnificent Festival Concert Hall at the Round Top Festival Institute is acclaimed as one of the world’s leading performance and learning centers for music. The 200+ acre venue is equally a delight for plant lovers with its ten gardens, exhibiting a collection of botanical specimens from around the world.

Round Top’s Henkel Square is experiencing a rebirth, thanks to Austinbased MLD Holdings. Enhancements to existing buildings, dating from the 1830s to 1900, will bring a welcoming village atmosphere to the town. Copper Shade Tree will share the new address with the works of over 90 Texas artisans, as will artist Beth Anderson, famous for her signature Painted Churches. Across the street, Bybee Square remains home to great pizza, cool music and one-of-a-kind shops. For example, at The Gallery at Round Top, you’ll find a wide variety of artworks. At Comforts, check out the selection of decorative doorknockers and colorfully patterned lamps, just to name a few.

“Kitchy and vibrant” best describes Carmine’s Texas Trash and Treasures.

Richard and Linda Hamilton repurpose 50- to 100-year-old roofing tin from old tobacco barns to create treasures that brighten the home and garden. Next door, artist Diane Tovey uses old-world techniques at her custom stained glass and mosaic art studio, The Glass Anvil.

AFTER: Tearing out the ceiling light box and installing recessed can lights, new tile backsplash, dark quartz countertops, new shelf design over the window and new painted Shaker door fronts really updated this kitchen. Recovering the chair seats and creating a workspace freshened up the breakfast room area.

Their friends Luanne and Charlie Burton, whose dining room was featured in Houston House & Home, January 2006, “Room Management”, referred them. When they additionally saw Paula Murphy’s kitchen in the May 2006, issue, "Clean Sweep", they called.

Although the kitchen had adequate space potential, the layout was not efficient and the cabinet above the peninsula made the kitchen feel dark and cramped. The ’80s-style golden oak cabinets, wallpaper, dated ovens and florescent ceiling light box had to go. “Once our sons married and the grandkids arrived, it was time to remodel and create more space in the room for ‘extra helpers,’” Bob said.

I recommended cutting back the peninsula eight inches, removing the upper cabinet and replacing the wall ovens with a sleek new Bosch dualfuel, stainless range underneath the existing vent hood. Moving the fridge to the right created room for a larger coffee bar, and a microwave cubby was

AFTER: Removing the upper “brow” cabinet and cutting back the peninsula, building in the fridge, re-grouting the floor, adding custom floating shelves to the blank wall for storage and matching the woven wood window treatment transformed the room.

Eddie Stone, owner of Sugar Land Paint & Décor, matched their second subway tile color choice, DalTile “Urban Putty”, in Pratt & Lambert Accolade latex velvet for the walls and custom matched the living room blinds for the cabinets and trim in Pratt & Lambert RedSeal alkyd satin enamel paint.

They searched tirelessly for the perfect drawer pulls, finding them at 24

The couple explained that even though they did not gain that much floor space, the kitchen is now much more efficient. “You made sure that we did not lose storage space when the upper cabinet over the peninsula was removed,” Debby explained. “By adding floating open shelving in the breakfast room which functions for storing pitchers, appetizer dishes and cheese trays, installing inset drawers in the peninsula’s dead space by the wall and opening the furdown over the refrigerator, we actually gained useful space,” Debby explained.

The couple chose contractor Mel Soto to do their remodeling. In addition to the items already mentioned, he replaced both sinks with new Blanco 18-guage stainless models and Hans Grohe faucets, relocated the existing dishwasher to the left of the sink and installed the DalTile “Biscuit” subway backsplash tile. Mel replaced the old floor grout with sanded Custom Building Products "Quartz" No. 101, a lighter color, which lightened and unified the kitchen.

The hardest thing for them to visualize was how sinking their existing refrigerator into the wall three inches in a wall pocket would further “open up” the kitchen, “Your idea turned out great and provided the illusion of a counter-depth refrigerator,” Debby said. “Mel was able to reroute the plumbing for the icemaker in the side cabinet so we could push it back. It has really changed the kitchen!”

Instead of building fixed shelves in the lower cabinets, they had Mel install Elfa pull-out drawers, which increased the functionality of the entire kitchen. They love how it turned out. “We are very patient and we’re careful to make choices that will last. We don’t redecorate often so we spent years collecting photos. As we set up the kitchen, we discovered to our delight that almost all of our dishes and glass accent pieces (some are wedding gifts over 40 years old) work as if we had specifically purchased them for the new kitchen,” Debby explained. “In reality, they were hidden inside dark cabinets for years, just waiting for this kitchen!”

In a guestroom, start with a basic, soft wall color to serve as a backdrop, then have some fun. I love playing with color, such as a peacock blue or 44

orange. For linens, of course cotton is very durable and washable, but use silks in accent pieces for a more luxurious touch.”

Additional accessories to complete your guestroom include a nice mirror, placed on a wall or dresser, so guests can easily get dressed when they may not have access to the bathroom.

Make room for your guest’s things. Make sure there is a practical place for luggage, such as atop an ottoman or even a luggage rack. Be sure to provide hanging space. If you guestroom closet is jammed with your own stuff, mount wall hooks or install an over-the-door rack with multiple hooks for guests to hang their clothes.

Give your guests easy access to an electrical outlet. These days, most everyone travels with a phone, computer or other device that requires charging. If all of the outlets are obscured behind furniture, plug in an extension cord or power strip to offer guests a handy power source. If you have room, place a small desk as a bedside table. Many desks can be purchased with a built-in power stip.

Rob Rosenbaum and Linda O’Neal have busy schedules, spending their daylight hours helping others. Rob, a Houston-area chiropractor and Linda, a Registered Nurse First Assistant, were finding their days allowed little time to relax, particularly with each other. A peaceful weekend country home, set atop 20 rolling acres just outside Burton, was the ideal prescription.

“When we built the house, we knew we’d enjoy it but we had no idea we’d be coming here almost every weekend,” says Linda. “We hate to leave on Sunday nights, lingering as long as we can before we head back to the city.”

Rob and Linda describe their country home as “French Country Shabby Chic” but once inside, you find there’s nothing too shabby about their choices. Their inviting home is infused with the colors of nature.

Unobstructed blue skies and rolling grasslands, viewed through floor-toceiling windows, become a gallery all their own. Doors, purposely different at every threshold—indoors and out—add even more color, with their hand-painted flowers, leaded glass and years of weathered paint.

“The white house on the hill,” as the building contractors called it, is certainly not plain.

Initially, the couple fell in love with a 1900s home in Somerville, but Rob and Linda desired more space and significant upgrades.

Rob and Linda found Round Top Home Builder Barney Reynolds, who encouraged them to let him draw a new home — one that would satisfy their wish list as well as retain the original vintage appeal. The larger, energy efficient and built-to-code result was exactly what the couple had wanted, complete with barn wood floors in every room.

HARNESSING HISTORY

“We bought the wood from a dealer at the Warrenton show, Bill and Jean Livezey from Two Rivers Trading in Iowa,” explained Rob. “They set up each year at Bar W. Field. They bring in samples of 50

lumber for you to pick from, you tell them how much square footage you’re looking for and Bill personally hauls it back to you on a big flatbed truck.”

Throughout the house, chandeliers of all shapes and sizes, new and reproduced, spill down from the ceilings. Each is handpicked from dealers and storekeepers across the state; the dining room lighting a choice from Houston’s Tara Shaw Maison.

Equally important to the design was the choice to not use window coverings. Insulated windows with standard low-e coating provide thermal efficiency and yield Rob and Linda a sunrise view from their antique iron bed.

On the bed, luxury down pillows from Pandora de Balthazar rest atop Simply Shabby Chic sheets. The delicate lace-topped linens

contrast nicely with the weathered wood that tops two night tables. A 4x7-foot stained glass church window serves as the door to the master bedroom, gliding along an antique barn rail to open and close.

“Visiting guests always remark about the door, particularly if they visit in the evening. It’s beautiful with the glow of the bedroom chandelier or the bedside lamp shining through the colored glass. The door is like a piece of art in itself,” says Rob. The master bath, with two Turkish marble bowls set inside an antiqued furniture base, are works of art, as well. “The base was originally a dining room buffet, much like your grandma would have had, with dark, dark wood. I showed a friend, Jennifer Williams, a picture of one of the antique doors and she was able to replicate the same great style,” explained Linda.

The guest bedroom door traces back to the late 1700s and French occupied Egypt; another purchase from the Warrenton show. Its worn and crackled teal blue paint stands as a testament to time; the hardwood beneath it of equal character. The door’s wavy glass is indistinguishable as new, a compliment to the craftsmen at Bobbitt Glass.

SPIRITUAL INFLUENCES

A mix of Rob and Linda’s faith and worldly travels are also evident throughout their design. Linda’s recent trip to Israel led her to many sacred places, yet none can compare with the reverent simplicity of the pieces acquired by chance back in the states.

“A friend of mine in St. Louis called and asked if I would be interested in some items from an 1886 church (St. Joseph Lithuanian Catholic Church) that was being renovated,” said Rob. “The property had been sold by the diocese to a non-denominational church that planned to make changes, with no use for the century-old wooden altars.”

Rob and Linda repurposed the handmade elements as signature pieces in their home, creating an antique buffet from the distressed main altar and a soon-to-be bookcase from a second altarpiece they acquired. The items converted easily for the couple’s home use, thanks to Linda’s talents as a decorator.

Rob and Linda agree life is good at “the white house on the hill.”

What better place to regenerate the body and the soul. Too bad it’s just for weekends.

The London native fell in love with the Round Top property, formerly known as the Outpost at Cedar Creek Inn, during her yearly treks to the area’s antique festival.

“I had an agenda when I was there,” she explained. “I had to fill a 50-foot container. We worked long hours and it was hard and it was hot, so to be able to now come back to The Prairie, what was once the Outpost, makes the whole experience more sacred. Part of it was the flea market itself but the other was the structure and the location of where it is.”

Today, The Prairie by Rachel Ashwell is a peaceful blend of four guest cottages and a new Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic Couture shop, where visitors have the opportunity to purchase bedding and furniture from the couture line that reflect “beauty, comfort and function” – the foundation of Ashwell’s design philosophy.

from artist/owner Lenore Prudhomme, a business transaction born of friendship and respect.

“Most B&Bs are charming, but many compromise on comfort and sophistication. I was drawn to the Outpost by Lenore’s sophistication in the world.

She’s an amazing painter, she’s intelligent and she makes great breakfast conversations about art, about family and about creativity.”

Ashwell’s first order of business, after the sentimental property became her own, was to bring out buckets of white paint. Poetic alliteration played into the next step, as she coined names for the unique guesthouses.

The Meadow Manor has an eat-in kitchen and an inviting front porch, perfect for a girlfriends weekend. Pink-and-white-striped Farrow & Ball wallpaper grace one of the two large bedrooms, the other a vintage pink floral.

Queen size beds make for a heavenly night’s rest after a long day, searching for vintage treasures.

The Cornflower Cottage offers a stylish flair with its use of vibrant geometric tiles. The ceiling of the spacious bath is lined with multicolored reclaimed bead board complete with Ashwell’s touch of sparkle – a vintage chandelier.

Built in the late 1800s, the two-story Liliput Lodge serves as the main building with its screened-in porch and comfortable rockers. The Liliput can be rented separately, the upstairs or the downstairs, with each floor giving access to a private bathroom; rented together, it’s perfect for two couples or a large family.

The kitchen, with its teal-colored distressed cabinetry, zinc workspace and butler’s sink, is the style Rachel Ashwell followers have grown to love over the past 22 years.

The tin-roofed Rangers Lounge is the place for a Texas-style breakfast, with Danny Riebeling often serving as chef. Returning guests remember Riebeling’s spicy migas and sausage muffins as favorites from the Outpost.

Selections at the Shop will match those featured in other Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic Couture stores throughout the world, the difference being how each is accented.

“At the end of the day, the overstuffed linen sofa in the Ranger Lounge sells as well in London as it does in California as it does in New York,” Ashwell explains. “But the Ranger Lounge has an extra – an antler chandelier topped with lavender pleated lampshades.”

The Prairie also contains several elk and deer heads, traditional Texas mainstays that came with the sale of the property. Instead of removing the taxidermy, Ashwell adjusted her signature feminine style.

“I thought ‘let’s embrace these animals.’ They’ve already had their sacrifices, but they’re still amazingly beautiful and handsome. That’s why I gave some of them crowns and some floral hats.”
