BEFORE & AFTER

BEFORE: A low roofline, clutter and narrow columns adversely affected Melanie’s studio/pool house. The owner thought she wanted a “beach-y” look since the building was beside the pool. AFTER: Raising the roofline, paint and adding substantial columns and matching furniture made Melanie’s studio/ pool house sing.

Melanie Haynes contacted me because she did not like her recording studio room. She says her call to me came after reading inspirational before and after stories of client homes in Houston House & Home, in addition to spotting a feature of my own laundry room in a past issue of Country Home.

AFTER: Melanie’s husband, David, painted the walls and cabinets Repose Gray, ensuring they matched the appliances. Additional cabinets and trim were done in Dovetail, another Sherwin-Williams’ hue. “Blue Pearl” granite counters and backsplash from IGM finished the room. BEFORE: Clutter, harvest gold appliances, unpainted cabinets without hardware and a lack of a proper island limited the kitchen’s potential.

BEFORE

“We liked your style and ideas right away and understood where you were going with your thoughts. “I’ve been an actress and voice-over talent for many years. What is now my audio studio was on the property when we purchased our home 20 years ago. “It was a rather rough pool house built by the previous owner and used by my husband David as a workshop for his ‘honey do’ projects. They essentially used it for extra storage and antiques and ‘fixer uppers’. “David graciously offered the space to me after I began to outgrow my first little studio in a small bedroom inside the house,” she explains. Before she met with me, Melanie thought she wanted a ‘beach-y’ look since it was beside the pool. But she wasn’t sure how to decorate the space and was at a loss on how to pull it all together since living in the “black hole” of her other studio space inside the house.

TIP: Always consider flow when decorating a room, whether with color or style, or both.

Melanie felt like she wanted to make the studio renovation the best it could be–a pleasing, relaxing space off the pool, yet still professional. She already had a wrap-around desk that she needed to use in the large space as well as some large antique pieces she had not been able to use inside the house. 20 house& home | September 2014 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

There were several suggestions I made during that meeting that would have never occurred to Melanie. The first idea was to use a vinyl woodlooking floor. She then bought the Armstrong commerBEFORE cial grade called Natural Creations Arbor Art Collection -- in Weathered Oak Golden Brown vinyl plank from Excel Carpets, installed by her neighbor Russell Litton.) The second suggestion was to keep things professional looking rather than beach-y and feminine. My third suggestion: pull paint colors from the large prominent desk sitting on one side of the room and paint the kitchen cabinets to match. David did a great job of painting, by the way. (The cabinets and trim are Dovetail latex satin enamel, and the walls are flat Repose Gray, both by Sherwin-Williams.)

AFTER: De-cluttering, paint, accessories, and cutting down the odd cabinet created a star-quality bathroom. BEFORE: Clutter and an odd white cabinet spoiled the bath. STUDIO AFTER: By rearranging space and appliances, we made room for Melanie’s new audio booth and new window overlooking the pool.

TRADE SECRETS • DO GATHER PHOTOS FROM MAGAZINES AND BOOKS of remodeling projects you find appealing. They are a handy shor t cut to show your design professional the exact look you want. • HIRE A DECORATOR to look objectively at your spaces and make suggestions that will help you redecorate on your budget. • SOMETIMES THE MOST EFFECTIVE STRATEGY is to first rethink what’s already paid for.

TIP: The most boring kitchens are all white because there is no contrast between the walls, cabinets, backsplash, counters and flooring. The IGM “Blue Pearl” granite was fabricated by Fon with Tailor Made. Perhaps one of the biggest changes came to the outside of the pool house—my suggestion to raise the roofline and add round columns—Melanie’s favorite changes. Why? “They give the studio a current, sophisticated look. She would definitely recommend seeking professional help, especially when it comes to color options and materials. The talented and educated eyes of a decorator can cut through the clutter and emotional attachment to pieces and bring everything together in a unified, updated and sophisticated way. My ‘window to the world outside’ makes it a pleasure to spend so much time in my audio booth,” Melanie concludes.

BY MARSHA CANRIGHT

TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT

Nine Steps to a Dreamy Bedroom and a Good Night’s Sleep

Interior Designer Julie Dodson created in a Houston showhouse a luxurious bedroom that beckons a good night’s sleep.

Creating a dream bedroom that assures a good night’s sleep

begins with a premium mattress, peaceful colors, luxurious linens and a cool, dark setting to soothe the senses. Deep, restful sleep is the foundation of good health and the lack of zzzs can have a negative impact on your energy, your work performance, and even your heart health. “Your bedroom should be a dream oasis,” says Barbara Sonnheim of K&D Home and Design Studio. “It’s the place for relaxation, intimacy, and rejuvenation. Your bedroom is where you unwind and leave day-to-day troubles at the door,” she adds. Making conscious choices about what is calming to you can reap real benefits. 1. Begin with the bed. For your primary sleeping area, select

a bed that reflects your personality and taste. If you sleep with a partner, a bigger bed is better, as you are less likely to be disturbed by the other person’s sleep movements. Cynthia Lipsey of Home and Sea in Galveston prefers a canopy bed that makes you “feel like a princess” and Mary Monn, co-owner of Antiques on Memorial, favors the romantic look of a carved antique bed, which nowadays can be fitted to a larger size bed frame. Sonnheim’s pick is a no fuss contemporary platform bed. “If you’re a nighttime reader, you may want to select a bed with an adjustable or padded headrest so you can sit comfortably in bed,” she explains.

24 house& home | September 2014 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

2. Choose the right mattress. What goes on top the bed is probably the most critical selection and key to snug sleeping. Experts say a firm mattress is usually best for the back. Still, the overriding priority is personal comfort. “You spend a third of your life in bed so put some thought into the mattress you choose,” says Deborah Bautista owner of Tista’s Fine Furniture. Bautista is partial to a new line of mattresses, King Koil’s Duck Dynasty line, which she calls “truly luxurious.” Her store also carries a variety of stationary, memory foam and adjustable mattresses. 3. Select beautiful linens. Never has there been so much

choice in fine and affordable textiles. Rule of thumb when buying cotton sheets, be sure to get a thread count of at least 200; although, a higher threat count than this may or may not improve the feel of the fabric to you. New fibers are making inroads. “Bamboo is an amazing fiber that is organically grown and is often combined with cotton. It’s naturally soft, light and strong, and is more sustainable than most other fibers since the bamboo plant grows so quickly. It doesn’t need pesticides and herbicides to grow successfully so it’s a nicer fabric to have next to the skin,” says Nancy Charbonneau at Woodlands Fabrics and Interiors. She also likes Modal, a fabric made from beech trees. “It’s smooth and soft and washes fabulously.

25

Moll carries antique linens, which are usually all cotton or linen. Sheets, coverlets and pillowcases come from France and Brussels; the quilts are all hand sewn in America. 4. Plump up your pillows: Having the right kind of pillow for how you sleep may help you banish morning aches and pains. “For me, it’s the pillows that make a bed luxurious. Whether its Euros, bolsters, king or standards, even accent pillows – they are the finishing touch for a beautiful bed,” Lipsey says. “Pillows are pretty, but they're practical too." 5. Pick a peaceful pallet. Whether you’re using paint, paper or texture on your bedroom walls, choose peaceful colors. Everyone tends to see color differently, however cool blues and greens and light neutrals – tan, gray and cream, usually make the best bedroom choices. Sherwin Williams color expert Jackie Jordan recommends Sea Salt, Ponder, Sleepy Blue, Dovetail and Silver Strand as the most soothing colors to consider for your bedroom.

7. Keep out the clutter. Keep accessories and knick knacks

to a bare minimum, says Ann Schamberger a designer with Houston’s Dwell in Style. “If the space is too visually distracting, the eye and mind will not have a place to rest.” Another tip: make sure there is no clutter and no work items – only simple, beautiful accessories and textiles. Your bedroom should be a place where you are completely at peace.

8. Sooth your senses. Aromatherapy, which is the bal-

ance and harmony of body and mind, is a small but significant boost for a restful bedroom. “Rubbing a light essential lavender oil on your light bulbs, lighting a candle or spraying your pillowcases with a light misting of the oil is a fabulous way to calm the senses,” Sonnheim says. Lipsey suggests candles, fragrant scents and room sprays in the aromas of the sea, and lavender and lemon fragrances for a perfect nights sleep. “Don’t forget to set your iPad to the beautiful and relaxing sounds of nature, especially the sea. You'll be asleep in no time,” she says.

6. Soft lighting and blackout shades. A cool dark,

place is the best environment for sleeping. Sonnheim says there should be no television light and no clock lights shining red or blue. “You need privacy in your bedroom, and these days there are great window treatments that also offer energy savings. You can block out the light and block out the Texas heat,” she says. Charbonneau says soft lighting will do until you’re ready to sleep. “I love to use lamp touch dimmers that let you dim or turn your bedside lamp off with a touch of a disc next to you. It’s the best $15 you will ever spend and it is available at all home improvement stores,” she says. “Blackout shades and draperies are a must in my world. You can use motorized drapery rods and shades in a bedroom set to a timer to open when you want to awaken.”

26 house& home | September 2014 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

9. Unwind, unplug. Remember to unwind and unplug in

your bedroom. Turn off your smart phone, TV, and laptop. All these devices keep you awake, and won't allow you to rest easy. They will be there when you wake up in the morning! Try a sound machine that brings the “sounds” of a delicate rain or the rolling surf, available at Target, Walmart, online from $10 and up. Consider a sleep monitor like FitBit One, Jawbone Up or Sleep Android that can easily map your sleep cycles and educate you on your best sleep time. Available at Best Buy, Kohl’s, $80 and up. Eye masks made of gel-filled plastic or herb-filled silk or utilitarian cotton can cool and sooth your eyes while keeping ambient light at bay, available at Nordstrom’s, Target, and online at Amazon and Urban Outfitters.

Sassy Green (SW 6416) and Functional Gray (SW 7024)

Enhancing Your Home With

Color

BY MORGAN SELF • PHOTOS COURTESY OF SHERWIN WILLIAMS

Details matter when it comes to making a great first impression with your home, and the rights color in the perfect place can make an incredible impact. Through the tips below, you can enhance architectural features, or even create them if your home is lacking in details.

EVALUATING YOUR HOME Color can set a mood, showcase your personality and attract attention, but the first step is to think about the details in your home that captured your interest originally. Whether it is an attractive ceiling feature, an impressive fireplace or striking surface materials, color can add emphasis to each.

MAKE A STATEMENT Feverish Pink (SW 6859) and Granite Pearl (SW 6250).

Art niches are fun places to play with color. Introducing a bright hue, like Dynamo (SW 6841) or Humorous Green (SW 6918), in these spaces make art-

work pop. If you don’t want to go bright, try a monochromatic, neutral color scheme with interchangeable, colorful accents, or use a color that’s deeper in value than the rest of the wall. For homes with few architectural details, use a bright color to make a bold statement in unexpected spaces, such as the laundry room or your furniture. A plain bookcase, for example, is easy to makeover with a vibrantly colored backing, giving it new life through bold hues like Nifty Turquoise (SW 6941) and Coral Reef (SW 6606).

FEELING BLUE In the kitchen or bath, try pulling colors froms your countertops. To find coordinating colors that will enhance the space’s best features, an easy tip is to lay a fan deck on the quartz or granite and look for small flecks of color to jump out. You might see blue, which is another huge trend both in Detroit interiors and on the runway. Rich, saturated blues like Seaworthy (SW 7620) add drama and glamour to a space, while creating contrast with lighter cabinetry. Bright, vibrant shades, like Flyway (SW 6794) and Frank Blue (SW 6967), will liven up your space, while still paying homage to quartz or granite.

CLASSIC APPEAL

Tricorn Black (SW 6258) 30 house& home | September 2014 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

Black is being used in unique ways, such as on pop-up ceiling treatments and doors. A darker ceiling actually draws the eye up and makes the space feel taller in a large enough space. Interior doors painted black with white trim also add significant visual interest, as the contrast between the two colors create a classic, timeless impression.

GRAY IS THE NEW BEIGE If your fireplace is the star of your room, pull a neutral color from the stone for your walls instead of bolder shades that will detract from it as a focal point. But instead of beige, try Agreeable Gray (SW 7029) or Repose Gray (SW 7015). Gray has become a huge trend, as people are beginning to see that it too can bring warmth to a space in a more contemporary, updated way. Houston Couple Heads to the Lower Gulf Coast To Find a Pretty Retreat on a Barrier Reef By Marsha Canright

B

uilt at the water’s edge on Mustang Island, the three-story Cinnamon Shore beach house has sweeping water views of the Gulf from every room. Some vistas span the Bay of Corpus Christi.

It’s a large, light-filled space designed to comfortably sleep 16 people and to serve as a low-maintenance, multi-generational retreat. The cream-colored structure ringed in windows is a collaboration between designer Susan Castor, Houston architect Melton Henry, and builder Jerry Buckley, who pooled their professional resources to create a special beachside retreat. It was a team approach from day one – to build an environmentally friendly home in a community called Cinnamon Shores, located on a barrier island stretching from Corpus to Port Aransas. “The three of us were committed to proving that if we did a thoughtful and thorough job upfront, it could result in a beautiful home that is easy to maintain, efficient and comfortable,” Castor says. A Bellaire couple purchased the house in 2012 for $2 million.

The 4,000 square foot house features two living areas, two master suites, a kitchen or kitchenette on every floor, a wraparound porch, and an elevator for easy access to each level. “It’s the kind of place that when you walk in the door, you haven’t got a care in the world,” Buckley says. A neutral color pallet uses muted colors and textures in soft whites, grays, and beige. The white oak stairs with stainless steel railings wind up the home’s central core as if it were a ship, adds Henry. A cupola with 12 windows caps the top of the stairs. The natural light enters at the top and filters downward throughout the house. The lofty third floor opens to a master suite with panoramic views of the gulf, the beach and the sky. A wide walk through between the stairs and the elevator includes two custom-built trundle beds tucked in the wall. There’s a separate bath adjacent to the stairs for those bed-

ding in the trundles, and balconies for relaxing. The second floor has the main living and dining areas, the full kitchen, a coffee bar, and an entry to the second master suite above the two-car garage. “The kitchen is my favorite room; it's simple but functional, and sleek and contained,” says Buckley. It has two dishwashers, a huge pantry, an alcove for a computer, a microwave drawer, and hidden appliances. Kitchen counters are made of recycled glass or granite, and the cabinets are painted with Benjamin Moore’s White Dove. A protected outside living area opens from the north side of the dining room and wraps around the structure. For Castor, it’s the master suite that holds her attention. “It has the most beautiful view of the sunset,” she says. The ground floor has a living area with a kitchenette.

Next to it is a bunkroom with two sets of built-in bunk beds and a full bath. A second bedroom has a queen bed and shares a bathroom with a third bedroom with twin beds. A mudroom sits behind the foyer and can be accessed by a side door next to the outside shower, making an easy access to return from the beach and shower before going inside. The laundry room is hidden behind a barn door finished the same as the walls. Easy-to-clean porcelain beige tile covers the ground floor. The upper floors are engineered white oak with an oil stain infused into the wood for very low maintenance. In addition to the views, Castor says she likes the interior natural lighting and the use of cypress on the walls. The home site is near the boardwalk, which crosses the dunes, following the zig-zag of the coast line.

Going Coastal A Family Lives Life to the Fullest in Rockport

My family’s flight from the hill country to the coast began 12 years ago when we purchased a second home in Rockport. After focusing on a grueling work schedule in Austin that spanned 20 years, we decided it was time to enjoy some downtime. We chose a wonderful waterfront home just minutes away from downtown Rockport. The little town’s charm immediately captured our hearts. We enjoy the daily fresh seafood restaurants, coastal activities and the historical downtown area sprinkled with quaint storefronts and artist galleries. It quickly became our “get away” place for long weekends. My husband and daughter fished and explored the coastal waters, and on some days we would just relax on the Rockport Beach and float in the saltwater pool. It became a regular part of our lives. We anticipated Fridays with gusto – just so we could hit the open road and escape to what we began calling “Our Happy Place.” The little town of Rockport has given us so much in terms of being able to live life to the fullest. Each

month Rockport hosts such fun activities as Market Days at the Maritime Museum grounds and an abundance of festivals. Over the years, we have attended every festival that Rockport offers. From the Wine Festival, Oysterfest, Art Festivals, Hummingbird Festival and more… there is never a dull moment here in this coastal town. In 2014, we were given the opportunity to move to Rockport permanently and work at the coastal community; The Reserve at St Charles Bay. We jumped at the chance and took up permanent residence at “Our Happy Place.” Each day I arrive at work and watch the beautiful coastal birds feeding in the wetlands and boats jetting by in search of fresh trouts and reds. It does not get much better than that. Never a day goes by that I regret living in paradise. We spend our nights waterside with a glass of wine and watch the dolphins swimming into the canals. Life is sweet here on the lower Gulf Coast. By Amy Garcia At The Reserve at St. Charles Bay www.stcharlesbay.com

The House is in the Details Couple Builds for Function and Authenticity By Susan Fox

Allegro Builders constructed this 5,700-square-foot home in Norhill, which includes an 800-plus square-foot apartment. The architect was Greg Swedberg, principal of 2Scale Architects. Art Glass by Wells designed the stained glass.

n “aha moment surfaced for architect Greg Swedberg when homeowners Cindy and Jim Winton stood on the Norhill Heights lot in 2009, where their soon-to-be house would be built. Just as soon as Cindy Winton said she wanted their house to look like one of the stately 100-year-old-plus neighborhood homes, Swedberg, principal of 2Scale Architects, knew exactly what to design for them. The Heights houses of that era, beginning in or around 1905 and flourishing until 1930, were part of the Arts and Crafts Movement.

A

The simplicity of design succeeded the more opulent and boxy designs favored during the Victorian times. During the Arts and Crafts Movement, home designs focused on craftsmanship, open floor plans and function. The hallmarks of an Arts and Crafts home included using quarter sawn oak on the floors and for cabinetry, and copper rather than other materials like iron and silver, which was expensive back then. Built-in cabinets, beamed ceilings, stained glass, dark wood moldings, exposed roof rafters, broad porches and exteriors of wood, stone or stucco also defined the design period.

So, with this in mind, Swedberg, concentrated on helping them create a home that reflects the many marks of excellence. How it Began Cindy Winton says before building in Norhill, the couple could not have identified any architectural aspect of any one of their previous homes, much less one of an Arts and Crafts era. “We’re lawyers, not architects,” she says. But all that changed fairly quickly. Once they decided on a lot and understood the sensitivities of building in a more historic area, they became quick studies. They began touring homes in southern California, as well as pursuing additional information from other sources. When she talks about their home now, she is quick to point out the key elements they incorporated into their own home. The front porch columns, she says, are more narrow at the top and wider at the bottom. They chose quarter-sawn oak for the floors and utilized stain glass as important appointments. Swedberg also notes that they opted to use copper for gutters and downspouts. The couple considered everything, from doorknobs to the library’s tiled fireplace surround to the crown molding. The homeowners were attentive to such details as the Arts and Crafts-style porch columns. The narrow to wide shape of them are indicative of the era. The bold red color on the wood indicates Cindy Winton’s love of rich hues. 54 house& home | September 2014 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

In the kitchen, the couple chose granite and Carrara marble. She says the latter was a desired material in the early 1900s. They used James Hardie cement siding on the home’s exterior for two important reasons: One, it does not require the type of upkeep wood does. And secondly, the planks come in the three-inch width they desired. About the House Cindy Winton says her mother-in-law was at a place in her life where she needed to move in with the couple. Because their previous patio home off Waugh did not offer adequate space, the Wintons began their search. “We used to ride our bikes through the Heights, and the neighborhood just felt right for us,” she says, noting they initially found a lot for sale by Allegro Builders. It was here they met Swedberg who was employed by the builder at that time. Above: The Wintons chose tile from Architectural Design Resource. They customized the design, inspired by Jim Winton’s former Navy Jack emblem, and framed it with a nautical rope designed tile. Left: Beyond the butler’s pantry is a “dirty kitchen,” which is often used during entertainment for easy cleanups. 56 house& home | September 2014 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

They ended up finding a different lot, but continued to work with Allegro, the company that built the home. The house is 5,726 square feet. On the first floor, there is a formal dining and living area, library, family room, a butler’s pantry with “dirty” kitchen, powder room and the kitchen and breakfast areas. Three bedrooms and three baths are located on the second floor, in addition to Jim Winton’s 93-year-old mother’s 835square-foot apartment. She enters the apartment just as if it were another bedroom door. An elevator, located at the back of the house, goes up to her apartment. Cindy Winton says they never dreamed they would pick an Arts and Craft home. They had not particularly favored the architectural style until now. It’s home until they can sail the seas. Above & Left: Quarter-sawn oak is used in the kitchen along with black granite and Carrara marble. 58 house& home | September 2014 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

While most Arts and Crafts homes in the early part of the 20th Century would have had dark wainscotting and moldings, the Wintons depart from tradition in the bathroom, opting for a lighter and brighter space. The stained glass refects their passion for sailing.

The Next Best Thing It looks like wood. It offers the warmth of wood. But it isn’t. Some might insist it’s better. James Hardie fiber cement siding is a product that does not rot, warp or swell. In this par t of the countr y, where heat and humidity often do a number on wood, builders often opt for this product, which is available in more than 25 color choices. Its color per formance lasts 15 years on the pre-finished prod-

ucts. The company repor ts pastels and beiges as being the most desired hues, with blues, browns and even some greens gaining in popularity. Additionally, the product comes in a variety of textures that include smooth, cedar, rough sawn, shingle and colonial lap. James Hardie recently began offering cement board in trim, fascia boards and for corners. According to John Dybsky, marketing director for the company, it costs less than brick and cedar. The rich colors and intricate patterns of Nicaraguan artisan tiles add a spicy flourish to the Mediterranean-style home of Houston builder Jennifer Hamelet. The tiles decorate the risers on her grand staircase, serve as the kitchen backsplash in hues of gold, brown and blue, and create a mosaic on the exterior garden wall. There’s also an inlaid tile “rug” in her design studio, in the foyer, the butler’s pantry, and tiles also serve as a border to the pool’s waterline. Hamelet first saw the cement tiles six years ago while scanning for quality building materials online. “For me, there were so many interesting patterns and colors. I could design my own pieces on their Web site and order the tiles I needed,” she says. “The tiles are beautiful, strong, stain resistant, and it’s possible to create one-of-a-kind designs for many applications," adds Hamelet.

Hamelet designed the 60x90 saltwater pool and All Clear Pools maintains it. The finish is Caribbean blue. The antique brick is from South Texas Brick.

Over time, she developed a rapport with tile aficionado Marcos Cajina and his wife, Melanie Stephens, who started the tile company in 2001. It is based in Los Angeles. Drawn by the beauty and durability of the 150year-old cement tile floors in the Granada Cultural Center in Nicaragua, Cajina decided to revive the art of making cement tiles. He built a single tile press in the basement of his Echo Park home, and 13 years later he has a full-scale production facility in his native Nicaragua. “We draw ideas from Spain, France, Morocco, Nicaragua and our own imaginations,” Cajina says. For Hamelet, who owns Houston’s Mirador Builders, the look and quality of the tiles struck the right design chord. It was love at first sight. Complementing the tile design are randomwidth, character-grade oak floors that have an ebony stain with satin polyurethane.

The kitchen color is from Pittsburgh Paints. The cabinets are the same color as the exterior windows and French doors. Light fixture is from Janet Wiebe Antiques.

She is a builder but her degree from the University of Texas is in design, and she takes pleasure in creative pursuits. “When I design a tile floor treatment, I use a border pattern and a field pattern,” she explains. For her own home, Hamelet used two rows of the border back to back, and had new reversed corner templates created just for her. “My house is on a busy corner and when I have parties, guests valet park and come to the front foyer. My close friends pull into the motor court, so I needed two entries. I decided to make them mirror images, exactly the same size, same door, and with matching tile treatments,” she says. One drawback is that the tiles cost about $10 per foot to install plus another $8 to polish and seal. “It can be difficult to find a craftsmen that knows what he is doing,” she says. EDITOR’S PICKS

We’ve pulled a few keepers off our bookshelf that we thought worthy of sharing.

STYLE & SIMPLICITY

An A to Z Guide to Living a More Beautiful Life By Ted Kennedy Watson • Sterling Publishing, 2011 The author sees beauty in all that is mundane, necessary and even edible – whether it be clear glassware, kitchen towels, or apples and lemons. The common denominator in these objects and many more – from dominoes to pushpins and ribbons – is the good feelings and homey aesthetics they offer. His words are inspiring; with hopes they change how you might view the everyday. He also shares what he calls “Ted’s tips,” such as: Use a cotton or linen napkin at each meal to elevate the experience. When entertaining, buy a little, make a little and assemble a little. Your guests don’t necessarily have a better time if you do it all. Watson also sprinkles a few quotes and recipes throughout the 160 pages.

SEGRETO:

Secrets to Finishing Beautiful Interiors By Leslie Sinclair Segreto Publishing, 2011 Houston’s own faux finishing extraordinaire Leslie Sinclair has compiled 300 pages of some of the city’s most fabulous homes, along with a coveted list of contacts that include interior designers, architects, builders, trades and shop owners. She first gives a fine finishes introduction that addresses some of the types: stencils, plaster, murals and paint techniques. Because a picture is worth a thousand words, she allows readers a peek into some of the most exclusive and beautiful homes while also addressing the design concept of each. SPRUCE:

A Step by Step Guide to Upholstery and Design BETTER HOMES & GARDENS

Trade Secrets: Insider Advice on Creating Your Own Personal Style Meredith Publishing, 2004 This 216-page hardback seems to stand the test of time. It is 14 years old, and it’s still one that we like to pick up and peruse. (Plus, it is a deal at $5 on Amazon!) Is it because all the homes are the personal ones of interior designers, shopkeeps and stylists? They most instinctively know how to build a solid decorating foundation for a home. Our own Joetta Moulden, who does our monthly Before and After column, is featured. You will find her in her own remodeled 1950s-ranch style Houston home. Each featured person offers decorating tips and interior design ideas. One says because nice rugs can be pricey, buy smaller ones to place atop a sea-grass rug for effect. Another advocates bringing in natural objects – rocks, shells and horns – to bring a touch of the outdoors inside. 72 house& home | September 2014 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

By Amanda Brown Storey Publishing, 2013 The Founder of Design Sponge calls Amanda Brown an inspiring artisan, the go-to upholsterer. The author talks about how to mix and match fabrics and color, in addition on how to make selections for specific pieces. From there, she leads the reader through a step-by-step guide for various chair styles. She talks tools and shows off inspiring completed chairs and ottomans. She makes it all look and seem so simple. It makes us want to tackle that old piece we have stored away! 140 pages. ON THE BOOKSHELF AT OOLALA (oolalagifts.com) at 833 Studewood:

GARDENING

BY JOE BLANTON

The Benefits of Residential Rainwater Harvesting

A custom-made rain barrel by Gulf Coast Renewable Resources.

From Buildipedia, a complete resource for DIY recycling projects.

Collecting rainwater has numerous economic and environmental benefits, and it can improve landscape health. After reading this article, you may be left wondering why you don’t have your own rain barrel. Consider our lawns. They require about an inch of water per week. In Houston we receive about 48 inches of rain annually, but not in weekly batches. Instead, we get heavy rains one day where water flows off roofs and into storm drains, followed by weeks of rainless days when we spend money irrigating yards from the tap. So why not intercept and save some of this free water for later use? Besides being economically sound, rainwater promotes healthier growth. Chloramine, the most common disinfectant added to tap water by municipal water suppliers, keeps our water safe to drink. Its job is to kill microorganisms, and it does so whether in our city’s water supply or in your landscape soil. Scientific studies have shown that plants watered with collected rainwater grow faster and more robust than plants irrigated with municipal tap water. Harm

the soil biota, harm the plant. Collecting rainwater has environmental implications including flood reduction. Now, one 55-gallon rain barrel in your backyard will not have a perceptible effect following the next torrential downpour. But if just 10 percent of 2 million Houstonians each had a rain barrel we could divert a million gallons of water from our streets and drainage ways -- equivalent to 550 backyard swimming pools! Keep in mind that not all rain barrels function well in our climate. Some leak during wide temperature swings while others do not exclude mosquitoes. To learn more about rainwater harvesting and to make your own 55-gallon rain barrel designed for Houston, go to www.houstonarboretum.org and register for our upcoming workshop on rainwater harvesting. Joe Blanton is the Adult Programs Director at the Houston Arboretum & Nature Centers, 4501 Woodway (www.houstonarboretum.org)
