BIG THINGS, SMALL PACKAGES Texas Artists Explore the World of Miniatures Where Bigger Isn’t Always Better By SuSie Tommaney

cale models are important tools in architecture, filmmaking, engineering, fine art and military strategy. Hobbyists enjoy a roller coaster ride of emotions — from creative serenity to frustrating anguish and eventual joy — when building miniatures for trains, gaming, dollhouses and dioramas. This month we’re taking a look at two Texas artists who have relied on their backgrounds in architecture to create miniature furniture, gardens and houses. While the rest of us were hunkering down and sheltering in place or swimming for higher ground during Tropical Storm Harvey, Katy’s Karen McLucas took advantage of the downtime to embark on an ambitious project during the storm.

18 house& home | September 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

There wasn’t an umbrella large enough to save us from Harvey’s 33 trillion gallons of rain so Lucas went the other direction: she created a tiny outdoor patio and chair set with fully functional umbrella and dedicated her YouTube video to local charities. McLucas says her father was a carpenter and she always enjoyed seeing his end result. “[As a child] I really liked making things, putting things together for my animals and hamsters.” She’s currently going to school for architecture and credits drafting for her success in the world of minis. Ara Bentley now lives in Arlington but the A&M grad has lived here and still has family in Houston. Her artistic style is to create aged, decayed and even spooky furnishings and

dwellings. She’s in the home stretch of a ten-year project that will make its debut in 2019 and features one of our favorite macabre families from television’s yesteryear. Bentley’s undergraduate degree is in environmental design, a stepping-stone toward a degree in architecture. She says she worked in the field of architecture for about four years but now teaches art to elementary-aged children and draws from that experience — breaking down the steps — to teach others who are interested in miniatures.

Because a full-scale project requires skills in a variety of disciplines, including sewing, polymers, sculpting, metalworking and faux painting, readers interested in creating a thoughtful gift for the holidays should start with a more basic starter project: something with straight lines like a book, box, crate or chessboard. Then expand on that idea to build a small scene inside a glass dome so that ceiling and walls don’t have to be tackled. “An architect’s desk or the desk of a mechanic or something you would find in a garage,” suggests Bentley. “Pencils, rulers, paper are super easy to make. It’s a process but it’s not overwhelming.” Bentley prefers to work with mat board (the same stuff used to frame pictures) and works in 1:12 scale, which means one inch equals one foot. McLucas’ medium of choice is wood and she works in half scale, called 1:24, which translates to half an inch equals one foot. Intermediate projects can include replicating a scene from a favorite movie or introducing mechanics, like a porch swing with chains. “I always find that people are scared to start these projects,” says McLucas. What worked for her was to prepare all of her materials and equipment in advance. “Put [their supplies] in a place where they can start immediately and not have to set up.”

KEEPIN’ COOL Not Just a Convenience, Air Conditioning is a Must Have for Living in Houston By BarBara CaneTTi

T

here is a reason why Houston is perhaps one of the most air-conditioned cities in the world. Just step outside and it becomes obvious. Virtually all new construction done in southeast Texas is built with air conditioning in mind because of the heat and humidity in this area. It hasn’t always been that way, but many structures originally built without cooling systems have been remodeled to add in the necessary air conditioning. “Unfortunately, during a remodel, many homeowners focus on what you can see and not on some important things that you can’t see, but the systems and functions of a home remodel are as important as the aesthetics,” says Jennifer Franz, a home comfort expert at Lennox. A remodeling job

or home addition should take into consideration factors such as energy efficiency, comfort and practical function. “It’s important to have an HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) contractor determine whether the existing HVAC system can accommodate the extra square footage,” she says, noting that with room additions that don’t have existing ductwork, homeowners could consider a ductless system, such as the mini-split systems, which are more cost efficient for rooms that aren’t used continuously or when ductwork isn’t feasible. Mini splits or ductless systems have two main components: an outdoor compressor/condenser, and an indoor air-handling unit. A conduit, which houses the power cable, refrigerant tubing, suction tubing

Taylor says units should be replaced after this amount of time if there are continuous breakdowns occurring or a major repair pending. “Replacing an older, inefficient system can almost pay for itself in saved utility costs,” he says. Taylor urges homeowners to clean or replace filters on a regular basis and suggests using an algae tablet or poured bleach solution in the primary condensate drain, if accessible, to keep it free flowing. It’s also a good idea to keep shrubs cleared away from the outside unit so it can “breathe” properly but leave the cleaning of the outdoor coils to a professional who has been trained to do this task.

and a condensate drain, links the outdoor and indoor units. They are installed in individual rooms and are good for zone cooling. Ken Taylor, owner of Air Depot, says central air conditioning is still the most common method of cooling and is usually less expensive than the mini-splits although not as cost effective to operate. But before any new installs or upgrades are ordered, Taylor says homeowners should consult with a professional to help them understand their options, to calculate whether their existing unit can handle the additional load, and to talk about existing problems within the living space. “This needs to be discussed with the installing a/c contractor — questions such as are there any current a/c or heating problems, any hot or cold spots, any zoning issues, any humidity issues, efficiency requirements and, of course, their budget requirements for the project,” he says. Taylor also notes there are new and innovative changes occurring in the industry now that could affect a homeowner’s choice. “Variable speed blowers and compressors are making new systems more efficient, quieter and more effective in controlling humidity. New refrigerants are more environmentally friendly,” he says. With proper care and upkeep, the mechanical life of an air conditioning system should be between 12 to 15 years.

RECIPE

Our recipe for grilled steak and tomato salad was inspired by Revival Market’s seasonal masterpiece. Photo by Julie Soefer

Grilled Steak and Tomato Salad with Balsamic Vinaigrette

S

imple but hearty, this company worthy recipe was inspired by the seasonally rotating salad at Heights gem Revival Market (550 Heights Boulevard, 713-880-8463, revivalmarket.com). Quick tip: Grill an extra steak and some corn over the weekend and use them for leftovers in this mouthwatering salad.

Ingredients

1 pound slender green beans, trimmed

6 cups arugula

4 cups cherry tomatoes, halved

2 cups fresh corn kernels, grilled or cooked

1 small purple onion, thinly sliced ½ cup plus 1 tablespoon olive oil

3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

Kosher salt and fresh ground pepper to taste

3 8-ounce strip loin steaks

1 cup crumbled blue cheese

Method

Cook green beans in boiling salted water until crisp-tender, about four minutes. Drain. Transfer to a bowl of ice water and cool. Drain.

Prepare grill on medium high heat to cook the steak. In a large bowl, combine green beans, arugula, tomatoes, corn kernels and onion. In a small bowl, whisk together a half cup of olive oil and vinegar.

Brush steaks with remaining olive oil; sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste. Grill to desired doneness, about four minutes per side for medium-rare. Let the steaks rest briefly and then cut steaks crosswise into strips.

Toss salad with enough vinaigrette to coat. Season to taste with salt and

pepper. Divide salad among six bowls. Top with steak strips and sprinkled cheese. Yield: Six servings

Wine Pairing

New to the United States is Très Chic Rosé (2017 France), a pretty wine that goes with just about everything. The fresh, lively and dry Grenache blend displays notes of strawberry, watermelon, honeydew and pink rose. It has enough tannic grip, acidity and vibrant fruitiness for a seamless pairing with this bold steak salad. As a matter of fact, this terrific wine will marry well with any of the salads we’ve featured this month.

Buy it: Spec’s Wine, Spirits and Finer Foods, multiple locations, specsonline.com, about $16.

FALL FESTIVALS FAMILY FRIENDLY CELEBRATIONS IN TEXAS AND BEYOND

ON THE COVER: Festivals, a lively downtown district and the oldest county fair in Texas; blaze your own art trail in Brenham. www.VisitBrenhamTexas.com

With an abundance of festivals and celebrations — from the Lone Star State to Louisiana — we've got dozens of excuses for taking a road trip this fall. Photo by Getty Images.

CORNUCOPIA OF FALL COLOR Festival Season Brings Celebrations of Heritage, Culture and Even the Great Pumpkin By Susie Tommaney

A

s the weather begins to change, it’s time to look forward to fall festivals in and around the Lone Star State. There’s plenty to see and do with community celebrations devoted to all sorts of passions, including food, culture, heritage and art.

BRENHAM In the heart of Texas bluebonnet country is the beautiful town of Brenham and, if you haven’t visited its downtown district lately, now’s your chance to see the magnificent mural by artist Anat Ronen. Everybody knows Brenham is home to Blue Bell Creameries — which we love — but there’s so much more to see and do in this region. From nearby wineries (Texas Star, Pleasant Hill, Windy, Saddlehorn) to history (Barrington Living History Farm is in nearby Washington) to eclectic eateries and natural beauty, Brenham offers all sorts of ways to reconnect with family, friends and natural beauty. Plus, the kids will want to get in on the action with the newly revamped Washington County GeoTour, with 30 new geocaches and a chance to earn that highly coveted Geocoin.

KERRVILLE We’re always looking for excuses to make a road trip and the Texas Hill Country never fails to deliver. Sports enthusiasts are converging in

Rocksprings (just west of Kerrville) over Labor Day weekend to participate in the Camp Eagle Classic Mountain Bike Festival, the largest of its kind in Texas. Even for those not racing, there’s plenty of adventure to be had with a zip line, river fun, hiking and rock climbing. Then, as September comes to a close, triathletes in the Kerrville Triathlon Festival will be swimming in the Guadalupe, biking the rolling hills and running along the Kerrville River Trail. With eight different distance events — including a kids’ run, Aquabikes and half distances — there’s something for every class of athlete. For a more laid back run/walk, don’t miss the Salvation Army 8th Annual Pumpkin Run & Harvest Festival, with a costume contest, games, music and so much more. We weren’t all born in Texas, but we got here as fast as we could. For those who can trace their ancestry back to the Celts, just follow the sounds of pipe and drum to the Kerr County Celtic Festival & Hill Country Highland Games at Stonehenge II in Ingram, just west of Kerrville. It’s a great chance to learn ancient games like braemar, open stone, heavy hammer, caber, sheaf and more. Everybody’s got a chance to venture back into the Renaissance era with Kerrville’s popular Renaissance Festival. Dress up in period garb, witness the tomato tossing and knife throwing competitions, and enjoy performances by the Cheeky Peacocks, Marty the Juggler and The Great Rhondini Escape Artist. Kid-friendly events are in abundance, too, including the eye-popping street painting at the Kerrville Chalk Festival on Peterson Plaza. It hap-

pens, rain or shine, but we’re hoping for the latter as this popular event benefits the Museum of Western Art. For old timey fun that includes bingo, amusement rides and game booths, be sure to check out the Notre Dame Catholic School Festival. Avid gardeners won’t want to miss the Fall Native Plant Sale & Festival at Kerrville’s Riverside Nature Center. With an abundant selection of native plants and trees, plus pro tips, it’s the go-to place for successful landscaping. Feeling more adventurous? Then go see the oh-so-cute animals at the Kid ‘N Ewe and Llamas Too Festival, a fiber arts showcase for spinners, weavers, knitters, crocheters and felters. Not a festival but equally as fascinating, don’t miss the Tour of Homes by Comanche Trace. It’s easy to get distracted by Comanche Trace’s pro golf facilities, private river park, fishing lake and walking/jogging trails, but do venture inside to see this year’s showcase of newly constructed homes with magnificent views. Some of the homes are for sale so, if you develop that Hill Country itch, learn more about the Kerrville region at kerrvilletexascvb.com.

LOUISIANA-BOUND Head east on I-10 and feel the road slip away as you enter a kinder, gentler state of mind in Louisiana’s St. Francisville. North of Baton Rouge and on a bluff overlooking the winding Mississippi River is this quaint small town overflowing with breathtaking scenery and southern hospitality. Explore the beauty of the great outdoors during the Feliciana Hummingbird Celebration, an annual event that promotes the unique breeding habits found in the region. Enjoy music and art in the park during the 16th Annual Yellow Leaf Arts Festival, with live music and handcrafted work by more than 50 artists and craftspeople.

36 house& home | September 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

Learn more about how St. Francisville’s magnificent gardens came about during the Southern Garden Symposium; the 30th anniversary theme is The Changing Nature of Gardening. Come for the afternoon tea and stay for the hospitality and notable speakers. Explore the tradition and history of St. Francisville even further during the month of October with one of America’s most haunted homes, The Myrtles Plantation. Visitors on the tour will discover fine antiques, architectural treasures and tales of romance and mystery. For bucking broncos and plenty of whoopin’ and hollerin’ action, there’s the biannual Angola Prison Rodeo, the longest running prison rodeo in the country. But purchase those tickets ahead of time because the “wildest show in the South” often sells out. Discover authentic German culture at Germanfest in Roberts Cove, a small community in the Acadiana region of southern Louisiana. It’s a family friendly event with children’s activities, folklore demonstrations and, for those of legal age, a large selection of German beer on tap. One of Louisiana’s largest (and oldest) agricultural festivals is the International Rice Festival in Crowley. They know how to do it up right with parades, a rice cooking contest and another contest for eating, plus a farmers banquet, classic car show and Queen’s ball. Explore the region in depth by taking a tour of the rice fields and crawfish pond at Kelly’s Landing, an agricultural museum and Cajun prairie farm; while there be sure to check out the John Deere Toy Museum.

CULTURE AND HERITAGE Heritage and cultural events around Texas include bowlfuls of gumbo at Medina Lake’s Cajun Festival and enjoying Indian summer in Helena and Sulphur Springs. Schertz, La Grange and Victoria serve as gathering

37

spots for Czech-Slovak descendants, the Scots and Celts gather for games in Salado and Ingram, and the Wendish remember their German heritage in Giddings. Old Town Coldspring even conducts a mock hanging of a rascal and hosts a shotgun wedding. Other throwbacks to the Wild West can be found in Alvarado, Beeville, Lake Whitney, Lewisville and Richmond. There’s something special about the historic town of Bastrop: It’s far enough outside Austin proper to avoid that big city traffic and, even in this day and age, has managed to hold on to the century-old character of its Main Street. We always look forward to the annual Holiday Homes Tour, the crown jewel of Bastrop’s four-day Lost Pines Christmas Weekend.

NATURE’S BOUNTY Nature’s bounty inspires even more events devoted to crops and livestock. Pecans have their day in the sun in Seguin, they go all out for hot peppers in Palestine, and heapin’ helpings of BBQ get served up in Jasper and Graford. Aromatic herbs can be found in Wimberley and mushrooms rule the roost in Madisonville. In fact, Madisonville is known as the Mushroom Capital of Texas and visitors will discover why this event is so popular with its auto showcase, a fine art contest, a gala dinner and the best in Texas wines and craft beers. Those with a sweet tooth won’t want to miss the Heritage Syrup Festival in Henderson, where ribbon cane syrup is king. It’s amazing to watch the Depot Museum’s antique mule powered equipment create oldfashioned cane syrup, plus local folk artists will be on hand to demonstrate rope and basket making, blacksmithing, quilting and other survival skills. We’ll discover harvest festivals in Liberty Hill, San Saba and Woodville.

38 house& home | September 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

The Heritage Village Museum in Woodville even has a living village with pioneer demonstrations, ethnic performances and musicians playing everything from dulcimer and bluegrass to folk and gospel. There’s also a replica of a Civil War Confederate camp and a buggy and wagon exhibit. Oktoberfest is celebrated in Addison, Celina, Emory, Fredericksburg, La Grange, McKinney and Pearland. McKinney’s Oktoberfest is a three-day affair that offers up the best in bier, authentic German fare and Bavarian craftsmanship. Kids will ask to come back for Halloween when pumpkins, ghosts and candy abound during Scare on the Square; then everybody’s invited Home for the Holidays when McKinney celebrates Christmas with a festival, tree lighting, entertainment and plenty of holiday spirit. Explore good old-fashioned fun at county fairs in Brenham, Kerrville and Seguin, and no autumn would be complete without an homage to the great pumpkin; find yours in Bertram, Kerrville and Paris.

ARTS AND CRAFTS Getting ready for the holidays has never been easier with arts and crafts produced by Texas artisans and craftspeople. Both Corsicana and Sulphur Springs display magnificent quilts, New Braunfels has its popular Christkindlmarkt, and there are arts festivals in Brenham, Denton, Edom, Fredericksburg, Ingram, Pearland, Waco, Winnsboro and Wylie. Angleton knows how to throw a shindig with its popular Market Days on the Brazoria County Fairgrounds. Sure, some go for the funnel cakes and Old Plantation soups and dips, but the big draw here are the more than 200 vendors selling everything from vintage furniture to boutique gifts, plants, jewelry and more. There’s something for just about everybody in the family when it comes to the 44th Annual Fair on the Square in Huntsville: From classic

39

cars to beer and wine tastings, plus shopping galore at more than 400 booths, this is a shopping paradise for one-of-a-kind treasures and gift items. Friendswood hasn’t hit the half a century mark, yet, but it’s well on its way with the Mary Queen 49th Annual Christmas Bazaar and Luncheon at Mary Queen Catholic Church in Friendswood. Stock up for holiday gifting with locally-crafted wood, jewelry, clothing and more. And remember that it’s still Fall Antique Weeks in Round Top, Warrenton, Carmine and surrounding areas. Refer to our all-inclusive guide in the August issue to learn more about where to shop and what to see. Dealers have been flocking to The Arbors in Round Top for more than 20 years, selling everything from custom furniture and fine art to handcrafted jewelry and more. Cole’s Antique Show in Warrenton is the largest indoor venue in the area, and this year will have more than 250 established dealers showing quality antiques, art and jewelry collections.

Curb Appeal and Private Quarters Are Both Possible When Designing From Front to Back By Sam Byrd | photoS By ayala VargaS photography

W

hen 2016 AIA Young Architect of the Year Brett Zamore was tasked with updating a single-story 1920s bungalow into a two-story modern, 4,140 square-foot home that fit the neighborhood and also offered privacy, he handled it much in the same style a barber handles a mullet. His design approach ended up becoming something both neighborhood-appropriate to the street-facing side and more relaxed in the back. 46 house& home | September 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

For the Lexington Street property, which is close to Highway 59 and in proximity to Rice University and Upper Kirby, there were a few immediate challenges. “One of the main things we had to figure out was how to control the noise of 59, connect the street to the existing language of the neighborhood, and also provide some privacy for the homeowners,” Zamore says. “It fronts the street, but it has its own life hidden within the shell of the house. It’s dedicated more to the back courtyard which became the focus of the house. It became a “U” shape and that’s [what creates] the privacy.” Another challenge is that the client is a lawyer for a development company, and he took the helm of bringing in other people to aid in the construction. “I think the key is having that really good team of people to help out and focus in on the client and make sure things are

An exterior covered patio and central courtyard are nestled within the “U” shape of the home, creating an extension of the living space.

done to his goals and fine tuning,” says Zamore. For a lot located in the cramped inner-city, space was crucial. The simplicity and clarity of its plan has little to no wasted space. The downstairs is dedicated as an open public area. Homeowners are immediately greeted by two sets of garage doors that provide ample parking for this modest-sized lot. The exterior is clad with cement board siding and aluminumframed windows. It has cedar soffits and a standing seam metal roof. The wood decks are ipe, sometimes called Brazilian walnut. From walking in the front door, the house boasts a decadent entryway, living and dining area and kitchen. Large, north-facing glass windows bedeck the entryway. From the street the passerby has a view through its front living room back into its dining and kitchen. The living room is separated from dining

and kitchen by a double-sided fireplace faced with cedar and limestone from Arizona Tile. Other amenities on the first floor include a butler’s pantry between the kitchen and den that has access to the outdoor patio and a small room behind the staircase that can either be a downstairs bedroom or an office space with access to a full bath. The kitchen’s island, wrapped in Dekton stone counters, runs the length of two sets of sliding glass doors. Poliform cabinets line the room. Stained concrete flooring provides simplicity and sleekness, and windows from RAM introduce natural lighting. The double doors also provide access to an exterior covered patio and central courtyard, all nestled within the U-shape, which almost becomes an extension of the home. “[The client] likes to have events and friends over, so this is 47

a great house for dinners and parties and events,” Zamore says. Whereas the first floor is great for entertaining, the second floor houses the private quarters. Stained white oak stairs lead up to a second story with the same wood used for the floors. Zamore details the second floor as having four bedrooms, a washer and dryer room and a large future family room with a street-facing covered balcony. The master bedroom has a large balcony to its north that faces the courtyard and windows that offer views to I-59 along its south. Three other bedrooms run along the west side of the house with a hallway facing the central courtyard. The large family room sits at the front with a large covered balcony that faces the street to its north; windows provide views back to the courtyard. The design process took roughly six months, but due to Houston’s floods in recent years, the construction lasted nearly a year. “This was during the Tax Day Flood and Memorial Day Flood. The owner was fortunate to get the foundation in but, for the framing, it was nonstop raining. It took so long but he finally got it dried in and it turned out to be a really beautiful project,” Zamore says.

The double-sided fireplace separates the dining room from living area and is faced with cedar and limestone. 48 house& home | September 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

The first floor works beautifully for entertaining, while the second story has four bedrooms, a laundry room and what will become a family room.

Zamore says that, overall, the design of the house was meant to be modern but have a vocabulary that fits the other homes in the neighborhood. It borrows from the neighborhood’s palette, yet retains the privacy the client requested. From its modest front to its secluded courtyard, it looks like mission accomplished for Zamore.

Bridgeland, a master-planned community in Cypress, features designs by several well-respected builders in the Houston real estate industry. Shown here is a model by Highland Homes that includes a master bath extension, an outdoor fireplace and an enhanced kitchen.

lose your eyes and picture a community with thousands of acres of lakes and waterways, trails and parks. Imagine never being more than a five-minute walk from green space, but still near a town center with upscale retail and dining options. It’s especially compelling for anybody living in a concrete jungle like Houston. With scary headlines like “sitting is the new smoking” and constant reminders from physicians to get up and get moving, finding

ways to fit activity into our lifestyles has risen in importance. Which means that new phrases come into play when it’s time to purchase a new home. What’s the walkability score? Is it close to parks or recreation centers? Has nature been preserved in the neighborhood? One master-planned community that seems to have health and fitness in mind is Bridgeland® in Cypress, with more than 11,000 acres and a firm relationship with the environment that builds on the agricultural legacy of Katy Prairie. “Having a connection to nature is extremely important to us at Howard Hughes as we develop our communities,” says Heath Melton, the vice president of master planned communities for the Howard Hughes Corporation, parent company of Bridgeland man-

ager The Woodlands Development Company. Melton points to studies that show an association between access to open spaces, parks and playgrounds, as well as better perceived health, reduced stress levels and lower healthcare costs. But, more than that, Melton also believes an essential ingredient in creating a community is providing place-making areas. “These are places where people get to know their neighbors, live life outside of the walls of their homes and make memories,” says Melton. “Parks, trails and green space give residents a place to recreate, come together for social gathers and, of course, enjoy the outdoors and exercise.” Along the miles of interconnected trails, residents will find wildlife observation areas, exercise stations and comprehensive educational signage. Across the acres of parks and playgrounds, they will discover a ten-acre disc golf course, butterfly garden and maze garden. And for the lakes and waterways, complimentary kayaks, Newmark Homes’ Versailles plan includes a three car tandem garage. 56 house& home | September 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

Bridgeland’s Parkland Village is based on the idea of living within a park. It includes the 25-acre Village Park with a lazy river, leisure pool, rope swing and lap pool. The neighborhoods have been named after Texas State Parks and some of the streets are named after local flora and fauna.

canoes and paddleboats are provided. If a little catch-and-release fishing in the property’s lakes — stocked with catfish, brim and spotted bass — is more their style, then fishing poles and bait are available. “We like to say that a community is more than just streets, beautiful landscaping and stunning home sites,” says Melton. “It’s about the people, place-making and making memories.” Over at the 6,000-square-foot Lakeland Activity Center residents can take advantage of tennis courts, picnic tables or the resort-style swimming complex that houses a six-lane junior Olympic-size pool, two diving platforms, a gradual-depth play pool, two 30-foot tower slides for tubing and a spray park. The activity center also staffs a full-time activities director who keeps the calendar booked with a variety of events, classes and workshops, not to mention more than 30 community groups and clubs that meet on a regular basis. with new floor plans in Parkland Village, the second of four planned communities within Bridgeland. Taylor Morrison, in an effort to meet the increasing demand for multi-generational living space, has introduced a floor plan with two first-floor master bedrooms. Melton says the second master bedroom also offers a small living and seating area that “allows the right amount of privacy when needed.” Melton says Trendmaker was one of the first builders in the market to really focus on transitional modern interiors and they took that approach to the exterior elevations on two of their model home sites. Highland Homes also introduced transitional modern interior elements as well as a painted brick elevation to their home site. And the Newmark model home boasts an interior courtyard off the entry, providing a centralized, open-air entertainment area that Melton says offers “a wonderful sense of arrival.”

Local artist and art car visionary Bonnie Blue got a little carried away with the paint while restoring her 89-year-old house, and now it's a returning favorite on the Houston Weird Homes Tour.

FUNKY BUT FUNCTIONAL Draw Inspiration, If You Dare, From Houston's Weird and Wacky Homes By BarBara Canetti Photos By thanin Viriyaki PhotograPhy

onnie Blue’s southeast Houston house is weird. She knows it, her neighbors know it and so do the droves of visitors on the annual Houston Weird Homes Tour™. Blue, a self-taught artist best known for her award-winning art cars and thousands of “Women That Rock” painted stones,

has used her house as a canvas and decorated the outside — and parts of the inside — in a delightful, colorful array of whimsical butterflies, flowers, hot air balloons and dizzying geometric shapes. The Weird Homes Tour started five years ago in Austin, says David Neff who, along with his wife Chelle, conceived the idea of a circuit of interesting houses after seeing some very strange domiciles during a walk in Austin, including a house that looked like the Alamo. “It got us wondering about these houses. We are entrepreneurial and thought this might be an interesting project,” Neff says. They arranged the first tour with several houses in Austin and then took their idea to Houston three years ago. They also organized Weird Homes Tours in New Orleans, Detroit and Portland, and are looking for additional cities. “Houston was a natural location for this tour. The beauty of

Influential designer Kelly Gale Amen went for complementary extremes when decorating the KGA Compound with eclectic and contemporary objects.

Houston is its arts – the museums, the Art Car Parade, the Orange Show and lots of other places where an awesome circle of people gather,” Neff says. They advertised locally, asking for submissions with photos from Houstonians who thought their home was weird. And the applications started coming in. A committee was formed to make the choices. Not all the houses are like Blue’s, who is a compulsively creative folk artist and will paint comical faces, flowers, pets or designs on anything that is put in front of her. Some of the homes warehouse funky or rare art, collections of oddities and busts of historical figures. Each homeowner takes advantage of every square inch of wall and floor space for their collectibles. Rooms filled with life-sized sculptures of people or pets, or a house jam-packed with painted portraits or a wall of poetry or a polka dot cow are just some of the interesting collections on the tour. There is a multi-colored house, with its companion Art Car painted in a rainbow of colors, as well as a house filled with thousands of hippopotami. One homeowner created a fence made from men’s neckties and another furnished a chicken coop. Some of the homeowners are painters, sculptors or performing artists and their houses show their inspiration of 64 house& home | September 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

the “kooky, odd and unexpected,” Neff says. “When you enter one of our homes you will feel like Alice passing through the looking glass into a new world. When you enter our homes you become enveloped in a place with different rules, different truths,” says Neff. Because the sponsoring organization is a social impact company a portion of the ticket price is donated to local non-profits, including New Hope Housing, an award-winning organization that has, since 1993, provided affordable and permanent housing to people with very limited means. Blue says she purchased her 89-year-old house 26 years ago. It was falling apart and required a complete refurbishment. She has always been an artist and spent most of her career in photo restoration, but loved doodling and painting for fun. At her home, that also is an art gallery and studio, she began painting the rickety picket fence in the front. “Instead of just white, I painted flowers on it. Then I painted the back wall with hot air balloons and other designs,” Blue says. “I didn’t plan on this — it just evolved.” In stages she continued to decorate the exterior: a painted garden along the bottom of the house, some butterflies kiss-

ing a sunflower, a piercing eye staring from the gable window and a series of colorful geometric shapes and sizes. Then she tackled the garage, painting it a bright blue (appropriate for an artist named Blue) and splashed plump clouds all over the wall along with a cheerful sun and a giant dragonfly. She calls the garage The House of Blue. Most recently she painted a matching couch and chair and put them on the front porch. “The neighbors were interested, but I think they enjoyed watching the house change,” she says. Neff tells us that the homeowners on the tour are driven by that “think different” spirit.

GARDENING

The Peruvian rock rose is a tough native shrub that laughs at the sun when it gets to be 100 degrees outside, and seems to tolerate freezes just as well.

TRIED AND TRUE These Resiliet Plants Tolerate Everything: Freezing, Flooding and Searing Heat

P

erfect storms don’t just happen at sea. Between floods, deep-freezes and hotter than usual high temperatures it’s been a challenging year for our gardens. Some plants survived, but still others have thrived. I’ve been pleasantly surprised at the resilience of a large number of perennials that have rebounded with great vigor after these extreme weather events. I will highlight here a few from our gardens that really impressed me. The plants in our 80-foot east garden in the Heights suffered temperatures in the low 20s this past winter. Even though the plants had no covering and weren’t protected from the freeze, we were able to cut the caesalpinia pulcherrima (known as “Pride of Barbados”) down to the ground in March and the plant’s famous two-toned orange bloom clusters have rebounded without any help. Thryallis plants are native to Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia and have long been categorized as tropicals. I personally feel that’s a misnomer as we’ve experienced six- to seven-foot tall rounded

72 house& home | September 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

shrubs with those happy, golden spikes all summer long and now into fall. This plant has not lost any size since last winter, just some defoliation. Another plant that rebounded well after being razed to the frozen ground last winter is the Big Hit™ Pink Hardy Hibiscus. We’re enjoying a beautiful eight-foot mound of huge, pink flowers from this disease resistant plant that’s a hybrid between American and Asian species. Even if you don’t have a green thumb, the obviously un-killable “Black and Blue” salvia should do well in just about any garden. This drought tolerant plant attracts birds, butterflies and hummingbirds, and is a heavy bloomer with cycles in early summer, mid summer and late summer. We almost gave up on our Cestrum aurantiacum (Butterscotch Cestrum). After losing every leaf last winter, it was given up for dead and was scheduled for removal. However, as the weeks went by, it surprised us all with new growth, blooms and all of the bees

73

The Butterscotch Cestrum surprised everyone, coming back from last year’s freeze. It’s been in almost constant bloom since April, which is good news for the bees and butterflies.

and butterflies that naturally follow. This one borders on the miraculous: the plant was never covered, cut back or fertilized and it has remained in almost constant bloom since April. She’s a keeper! It wasn’t necessarily a surprise that the Peruvian rock rose (pavonia peruviana) did so well. This hardy shrub has never needed any care whatsoever and loves the searing heat from July through October. It’s safe to say that it obviously can handle freezing temperatures as well. Two other survivors from Complete Restoration, last winter’s record-breaking Rewiring of Lamps and freezes include the “Mystic Chandeliers Spires” salvia, with its eightinch purple bloom spikes, and the “Cherry Chief” salvia microphylla. Both of these plants offer heavy bloom cycles and are nectar-rich. I’m still amazed at how well these plants have fared. Be sure to keep some of these winners in mind for future gardens. Remember, work less, enjoy GREAT SELECTION OF: more! Chandeliers, Vanity Lights, Table Lamps, Replacement Lamp Shades, Unique Restored Lamps and Lighting Fixtures

The Big Hit™ Pink Hardy Hibiscus has six- to eight-inch pink flowers with a dark pink throat; expect blooms in both summer and fall. Note the contrasting color from the “Black and Blue” salvia in front.

The “Pride of Barbados” (center) was cut to the ground in March and has rebounded beautifully, as has the more tropical thryallis plant with its happy, golden spikes (left).
