eptember is finally here and that oppressive summer heat has finally abated, though only somewhat, giving us all a little breathing room and offering hope that we can soon return to the great outdoors. There are plenty of reasons to get out and get going, too, with Antique Weeks in the country and unique inventories of nautical artifacts, estate jewelry, rusted signs and vintage clothing. Throughout Texas and Louisiana, festival organizers have been busy, busy, busy. From harvest fests to showcases of art and culture to celebrations of food both strange and familiar, these gatherings give us the opportunity for community, to enjoy live music, historical tours, and wholesome entertainment far removed from the blue glow of electronics. Fall also kicks off a season of tours that doesn’t slow down until after Christmas. Great design speaks to the heart and, when done best, reflects the individual style of the home’s inhabitants. Good news is that we’re not all cut from the same cloth, and there’s no better example than in this month’s issue of Houston House & Home. From the sleek architecture of contemporary construction on the MA+DS Modern Home Tour to the eclectic, colorful and whimsical spaces on the Weird Homes Tour®, it’s fun to see how others live while also reinforcing the personal decisions we’ve made in our own abode. hen it comes to the hottest new design trends, all eyes turn to this month’s Maison&Objet in Paris. But not all fabrics are created equal. Learn to look beyond those gorgeous prints to recognize which fabrics are right for your next upholstery project, then start designing. Whether you’re looking to reupholster a La-Z-Boy, custom build a new couch, or restore an heirloom, your choice of fabric can make or break that upholstered piece. Choose pure cotton for that couch or armchair and you’re asking for wrinkles, fading, and indelible stains. Choose a cotton-polyester blend and avoid all of the above. Cotton, along with polyester, linen, and wool is at its best in a fabric blend. Even so, every fabric has its own applications. Pure cotton is absorbent and breathable,

helping you keep cool and dry in a city with regular heat advisories. It also dyes extremely well and is perfect for slipcovers. Linen is a lustrous combination of strength, durability, and softness. It shrinks but doesn’t pill or fade. The affordable natural fabric works wonders for the smart, tailored furniture found in formal rooms. However, take heed, linen is not approved for a general audience. Since it stains and wrinkles easily, it belongs in adult-only spaces. Wool has a number of positive qualities. It’s wrinkle, stain, fade and — for those who like to live dangerously — flame resistant. Still, the natural fabric flowers when joined with a synthetic fiber. It becomes more durable and easier to clean, a great choice for a living room sectional.

“The design originated from a pattern in the sand on an island beach in Tanzania.” — Andrea Brand Designs, Living Ritual Collection Polyester is more than the tight, itchy pants so popular in the ‘70s. Though synthetic, it has the soft feel of natural fabric. It’s also durable, easy to clean, and doesn’t wrinkle or fade. You know the benefits of silk, the sumptuous natural fiber synonymous with elegance available in a wide variety of colors. But it’s high maintenance and doesn’t stand up well to everyday use. Velvet is luxurious and color rich like silk but more durable and can be used for sofas, chairs, and benches. That said, it’s difficult to clean and very expensive. Chenille is the opposite of silk. It’s a casual fabric suited for the furniture found in man caves, dorm rooms, informal living rooms, indoor bars (bar stools), and even children's rooms. Leather is the big kahuna of upholstery fabrics for good reason. The natural material is at home in modern and tra-

ditional decor, conservative and bold color schemes. It also prevents stains, cleans easy and, in the case of distressed leather, conceals scratches. The only trouble with leather is its hefty price tag. It’s definitely an investment. Jute is a natural fabric primarily manufactured in India and Bangladesh. It’s incredibly susceptible to wrinkling and, historically, has been used for rope and matting. And unfortunately, that’s how it feels. Still, it’s an ideal material for an ottoman, adds textural elements to accent pieces, and couples with leather, wood, and neutral decor. Nylon is a resilient synthetic fiber that plays well with other fabrics. It does fade, but is ready-made for the wear and tear of a children’s playroom and easy to clean and maintain. Olefin holds up well outdoors thanks to its extreme durability. The synthetic fiber also retains color, so it can be cleaned with strong detergents and bleach.

KITCHEN COUNTERTOPS In Addition to Price, Consider Aesthetics, Durability and the Environment

hoosing the perfect countertop is a key design decision when creating or remodeling a kitchen. There are a mind-boggling number of options to explore and they can be expensive, so proceed with a plan and a budget to save time and angst. Every countertop material has strengths and weaknesses, so your choice should depend on your particular needs. You may want to consider long-term durability, the level of maintenance required, and the environmental impact of your choice. Laminates are the most affordable choice. Made from layers of plastic usually bonded to particleboard, these products are offered in a wide range of styles and textures at prices ranging from $12 to $40 per square foot. Because the material is not porous, it does not absorb food spills or bacteria: a definite hygienic plus. Laminates are low maintenance needing only soap and water to clean. resistant to heat or scratches. Depending on usage, they may not stand up as well over time or last as long as other materials. Although not considered a green product, laminates use a small amount of resin compared to plastic-based solid surfaces. Ceramic tiles are another affordable option and relatively easy to install. Made from clay that is baked to remove moisture, the tiles are not damaged by hot pans or water and, when properly glazed, will not stain. Tiles are easy to customize and available in many colors and sizes. The downside is that the tiles may crack or chip if something heavy falls on them, although individual tiles can be replaced. Intense energy is required to mine and fire the tiles and many contain a high degree of recycled materials. Glass tiles are considered more environmentally friendly but are also more likely to scratch. The average cost for ceramic tiles is between $5 and $7 per square foot, although the cost of labor, tools and mate-

rials could be up to $40 an hour. The average countertop takes ten hours to install. Solid surface countertops are made from acrylic or polyester resins and are also an affordable choice. These counters are strong and resistant to stains and mildew but still at risk for heat scars, scratches and dents, depending on the specific product selected. Production of these countertops is energy intensive, using primarily petrochemicals, and most of these materials are not recyclable. Costs range from $48 to $69 per square foot installed. Wood countertops, including butcher block slabs, fall in a similar price range, about $40 to $65 per square foot, depending on the type of wood selected. The price of a teak countertop will be equivalent to a higher end stone; if you choose an exotic wood, the price can climb to $200 per square foot. Water and wood do not mix well but wooden countertops are heat resistant, although the wood must be sealed. Reclaimed or salvaged wood is the most sustainable choice but, to be eco-friendly, the Forest Stewardship Council also recommends using untreated hardwood. Check out its recommendations at us.fsc.org/en-us. Engineered stone, often called quartz, is made from quartz crystals held together with acrylic resin binders, which are then pressed into slabs. The result is durable, heat resistant and looks very much like stone. The cost of engineered stone is $55 to $155 a square foot. There are some occupational and environmental concerns, however. When slabs of engineered stone are cut to fit a kitchen, quantities of silica particles are released, which, if inhaled by workers, can lead to silicosis or lung cancer. Natural stone, like granite, marble and soapstone, is one of the more expensive options. Prices vary from about $60 a square foot to $200 or more, depending on which slab you select. Marble is similar to granite in durability, but commonly costs about $50 more per square foot. Soapstone is also more expensive than granite. It’s energy intensive to quarry and transport these materials long distances, which makes them a less green choice. Recycled glass, stainless steel, sealed cement, limestone, bamboo, and paper stone are aesthetic choices for a more outof-the-box kitchen design. Stainless steel, which is virtually indestructible but not immune to scratches, costs about $67 to $95 per square foot. Environmentally friendly recycled glass countertops are sturdy and available in every imaginable color, with a price tag between $50 and $100 per square foot.

Foraging at Urban Harvest Farmers Markets Houston’s Leader in the Local Food Movement Celebrates its 25th Anniversary

rban Harvest sprouted in 1994, inspired by a community garden that was built more than 30 years ago in the Fourth Ward. Since then, it has blossomed into a large organization enriching the Houston community with gardening classes, community garden programming and youth education. But most Houstonians know the non-profit for its burgeoning local farmers markets. It started out with just seven vendors, providing an outlet for backyard gardeners and the community to sell freshly harvested produce. Today, many of the original vendors — including Atkinson Farms, Animal Farm and Pat Greer’s kitchen — are still a part of this growing farmers market supporting more than 70 local producers.

Three Locations All farmers markets sell sustainable fruits and vegetables from within 180 miles of Houston, offering the freshest local meats, produce, prepared and hot food vendor fare. While produce should always be the star of a farmers market, there are many other wonderful

GREEN BEAN, FIG AND CORN HARVEST SALAD

ere’s a gorgeous and hearty vegetarian dish courtesy of Jordan Winery — perfect for just on-the-brink of fall weather. Fresh figs, sweet corn and green beans are all making appearances at the farmers market and this salad is great for lunch or a dinner sidekick.

INGREDIENTS ¼ cup aged sherry vinegar 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 1 tablespoon fresh thyme 1 shallot, finely minced freshly ground black pepper and salt to taste 1 cup Jordan Extra Virgin Olive Oil 4 ears of corn, shucked and silks removed 2 tablespoons Aleppo crushed peppers (can substitute crushed red pepper) 18 assorted fresh figs 1 cup green beans or Romano beans stringed ½ cup hazelnuts, roasted, skinned and crushed 8 cups baby arugula, stemmed and rinsed 1 cup frisée trimmed of most green 32 house& home | September 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

METHOD To make the dressing, combine sherry vinegar, mustard, thyme, shallot, salt and pepper in a blender at medium speed. While blending, slowly drizzle ¾ cup Jordan Extra Virgin Olive Oil until emulsified. Refrigerate and keep for up to one week. In a nonreactive bowl, toss ears of corn with remaining Jordan Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Aleppo pepper and salt. Grill corn on medium high heat until it begins to brown. Let the corn cool to touch, then slice kernels off the cob and set aside. Bring a pot of salted water to a boil and prepare an ice bath. While water is coming to a boil, quarter figs and set aside. Blanch beans in boiling water until slightly tender, about 3 minutes. Shock beans in ice water and drain. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Add salad dressing to taste and gently toss. Serve immediately. Pair with Jordan chardonnay. Yield: Four servings

SIGNS AND SALVAGE It’s the Season For Architectural Finds, Rusty Signs and Vintage Fashion By Barbara Canetti are popular, as are “right hand” pieces from the post-war 1940s, when people dressed up and went out frequently. Jewelry made of bone, ivory and tortoise shell are also popular vintage choices. Recent trends for antique jewelry do not include pearls (the market is flooded with fresh water pearls) or brooches (pins that tend to be too heavy for the lighter weight clothing women wear today).

nterior designers recommend blending modern with vintage to create an interesting and layered look in the home. Select antique, repurposed or salvaged objects to create a design that’s unique and eclectic. Yes, it’s time for Antique Weeks in the country, when mainstay brick-and-mortar (or shiplap and tin roof) dealers are joined by pop-up tents and seasonal merchants; check the websites in this story for exact show dates. But don’t overlook the vendors in the Houston and Galveston metropolitan areas. With curated collections of everything from estate jewelry to upcycled clothing, this is a great time to fine tune your signature style.

NAUTICAL ARTIFACTS Nautical artifacts are made to last a lifetime – and they do. Antique lights, in particular, are popular items for seaside homes as well as city houses with pools and outdoor spaces. Mike and Adrienne Culpepper, owners of Nautical Antiques & Tropical Decor in Galveston, say they scour the world annually — breaking yards in India, Turkey and Bangladesh — to salvage parts of ships and boats for their shop. The lights people buy are probably 30 to 40 years old, made of solid brass already sporting a rich patina, and can be retrofitted for their home or yard to last forever. Antique ship flags — numbers and letters — are also popular nautical finds as well as the heavy floor grates made of teak, mahogany or oak and sold by the pound. The Culpeppers mark each item as either salvaged or new made from reclaimed materials. Antique nautical maps and charts are also popular as framed artwork in homes. JEWELRY Art Deco, Victorian or Georgian style jewelry is highly sought after because of the quality of workmanship, the comfort of the fit and the magical romantic sensation that each piece possesses, says Cristina Mattern, a gemologist who works with estate and antique jewelry at Tenenbaum Jewelers. Mattern says old jewelry is usually more elaborate than pieces made today because gold was not expensive a hundred years ago. VINTAGE CLOTHING There is a limited market for antique clothing, but vintage garments are a busy business — and lots of fun, too. Sam VanBibber, who has been recycling clothes for decades, says items from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s are popular for parties or events, but clothing saved from the previous century up through the 1940s is hard to come by. VanBibber, who works at Retropolis in the Heights, and co-worker Steve Candelari (the Retro-man), say they shop at estate sales, garage sales and gather old stock from businesses that are closing. “Sometimes it is just being at the right place at the right time,” says VanBibber. She says families sometimes contact her when an elderly relative dies and she picks out interesting clothing from the deceased person’s closet. Popular items are dresses, skirts, sweaters and jackets. Boots and jewelry never lose their appeal. But, she notes, clothing from before the 1930s runs small and is extremely fragile. Inside the loop, Tina Davis of Cheeky Vintage recently launched Cheeky Vintage Upcycled, an initiative that transforms vintage silks. “We embrace going green and sustainable fashion at Cheeky and feel this is the way of the future,” says Davis. ANTIQUE SIGNS They are a sign of the times and they are valuable. Vintage soda signs — Coca-Cola and Dr Pepper in particular — are popular, as well as antique advertising panels for beer or other consumables, says Bill Saville, a longtime dealer at Thompson’s Antique Center of Texas on Hempstead. Saville says oil and gas memorabilia — Mobil Pegasus, Exxon, Chevron and Texaco — are highly sought out by individuals as well as businesses and prices vary from inexpensive to more than $5,000. Early signs made of porcelain last longer than more recent metal signs. But, if buyers can’t find the vintage signs they are looking for, Sloane Gallery has thousands of photographs of early Houston and can reproduce digital copies of buildings, signs and companies that are no longer standing. Proprietor Story Sloane makes black and white copies, as well as sepiatone prints, and is currently selling framed vintage photographs that were recently on view at George R. Brown Convention Center.

Origin Architects thoughtfully designed the home, a postHarvey rebuild, not just for its human owners but also its feline residents, with a dedicated cat room and cat shelves. Located just one block from Emancipation Park on Saint Emanuel is a C-shaped structure designed by refuGe Design Studio with an eye toward privacy. The interior space opens toward an exterior large enough for a pool, and the structure’s orientation allows for plenty of sun. Clean lines and limestone walls can be found at the studioMET Architects-designed home on University Boulevard. Floor-to-ceiling windows let in natural light, the open concept interior boasts five interconnected rooms, and a front entry courtyard that wraps around the façade creates a bounded play area for young children. On a small lot on West 21st Street with three towering trees, Charles Todd Helton Architect, Inc. designed a unique, equally tall four-story structure with a tree house feel and a terrace view of downtown Houston and the Medical Center. Read our companion story in this month’s issue. In The Galleria area tour-goers will get a little taste of Florida courtesy of Collaborative Design Group. The Ushaped Lampasas Street home features a completely screened in courtyard, a bridge connecting the two wings overlooking said courtyard, and a three-story fireplace. On West 32nd Street in Garden Oaks, the efforts of 2Scale Architects to right-size a home for their clients, while accommodating their casual lifestyle and desire for defined spaces, led to zones of activity and a stretched out design, evidenced by a cottage-like master suite pulled away from the main house, leaving a unique outdoor living area between the two spaces. Cape Cod comes to central Houston in MASA Studio Architects’ design on West Cowan. A double-volume stair foyer and window wall offer views of a centrally placed pool, and natural light fills the interconnected, open spaces downstairs. The creation of two enclosed outdoor areas and the placement of vistas throughout the home on Glen Haven Boulevard, designed by Intexure Architects, blur the line between indoor and outdoor space, as do the detached guest pavilion and outdoor deck. eird Homes Tour® has grown over the years to include explorations into the strange and wonderful dwellings of New Orleans, Detroit, Portland and Austin, but this month the spotlight is on Houston with some returning favorites and a few new surprises. Those with a green thumb, or hopes of getting there, will want to explore Selia Qynn’s amazing backyard habitat that has been certified by the National Wildlife Federation. Just as fascinating is the 1897 Victorian farmhouse owned by Jay Wehnert and Victoria Harrison; we featured their curated back yard in June but the interior is even more fascinating, with whimsical folk art at every turn. In designing this property on West 21st, Charles Todd Helton Architect, Inc. was able to preserve three existing mature trees on the lot. modern home in the Heights area might buck the trend of the neighborhood’s plentiful bungalows and vintage charm, but for the Walji-Raissian family, it was exactly what they wanted. They hired architect Charles Todd Helton to design a house on the land they owned and turn their wishes into a reality. Now that the family has realized their dream home, they’re opening the doors and sharing their 21st century abode as part of the MA+DS Modern Home Tour this month. The four story home spans 3,800 square feet and towers over nearby structures, with an additional 42 inch raised foundation to accommodate the flood plain. Three existing trees were preserved on the lot and the end result is a uniquely noticeable home, thanks to ingenuity and bold choices. 56 house& home | September 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

“On the first floor, you can build up to a certain amount of feet close to the property line. On the second and third floors, you can overhang past those lines. [However,] you don’t want to build too close to the trees either,” says Charles Todd Helton. Upon entry to the home, the foyer immediately stands out. The view straight up spans the first three floors — an idea the owners came up with as part of the design. The guest bedroom at the back of the house looks out onto the base of a large sycamore tree. Exiting the side door, a large pecan tree is visible. The second floor, designated as public spaces for entertaining guests, utilizes an open floor plan. From this level, the residents can see the front, side and rear trees through large side windows. The kitchen, decked out with appliances

from Factory Builder, is spacious yet functional. A balcony off the living room faces a tree in the back yard and reveals a small outdoor kitchen to the side. The third floor, the couple’s private retreat, accommodates the master suite along with a loft/office space, the laundry room and an extra bedroom suite. Both bedrooms contain large picture windows, allowing for nice views in all directions. The fourth floor holds a one bedroom suite designed for the couple’s son, complete with its own kitchenette. Also located on the top level is an open space that can serve as a flex space for a studio or loft. The outside terrace offers a spectacular line of sight: The southeast side prominently displays Houston’s downtown skyline while the southwest side captures a view of the Texas Medical Center. The owners’ lifestyle called for a few nuances within the design. They wanted a fairly large sized home, but the lot size could accommodate only so much — especially considering the three existing trees the family wanted to keep — but Helton rose to the challenge. All the specifications required some push and pull in the design, and Helton was pleased to find the owners were amenable to his suggestions. He employed cantilevered space, where a floor above can overhang into the floor below, to accommodate the spatial restrictions. Helton says he used this design tactic several times throughout the property.

When you’re climbing up the stairs, it directly looks out to the trees at different levels and through different windows. It’s one of the coolest parts of the house,” Helton says. There’s a white feature wall on the front of the house. The idea was we were going to [eventually] have colored lights shining on the wall,” Helton adds. Helton reports the Walji-Raissian family is happy with the modern home and is excited to welcome guests to tour their quarters this month.

n Houston we welcome the advent of fall because it brings some welcome relief from the heat. But it’s also a season filled with harvest festivals, showcases of art and culture, and celebrations of food both strange and familiar. These gatherings give us the opportunity for community, to enjoy live music, historical tours, and wholesome entertainment far away from the television and computer.

CULTURE AND HERITAGE We’ve got more than a few Oktoberfests this fall, which can only be a good thing for lovers of polka, pretzels and bier: look to Addison, Celina, Fredericksburg, Galveston, La Grange and McKinney. Not to be outdone, Roberts Cove in Louisiana celebrates Germanfest in October. Then, in the shadows of Stonehenge, the Hill Country Arts Foundation hosts the Scottish 64 house& home | September 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

Highland Games and Highland Dance Competition in Ingram. Experience Texas Czech culture at the Texas Czech Heritage & Cultural Center in La Grange, with a koláce eating contest, music in the amphitheater with a 28-piece folk ensemble from the Czech Republic, and a big H-E-B fireworks finale. This month Medina Lake hosts the No. 1 Cajun festival in Texas, so bring the family and friends. Nearby Giddings celebrates its early settlers with the 31st Wendish Fest with museum tours, folklore and more. Down Victoria way is the Czech Heritage Festival with Tarok games, accordion lessons and the famous pastry wheel. Lewisville does it up right with its Western Days Festival, bringing tamales, wild west pony rides and five stages of live entertainment. Old Town Coldspring gives tours of the historic jail and encourages folks to dress in early 1900 attire during Heritage Days.

During the month of October, head to Louisiana to check out the historic Myrtles Plantation in St. Francisville, with its popular mystery tours and Halloween Extravaganza. We’ve got more wild west fun in Beeville with food trucks and a parade during Bee County Western Week. Celebrate harvest and East Texas heritage in Woodville with period costumes and demonstrations in the “Living Village.” For cowboys, cannons and history, look no further than Texian Market Days at the George Ranch Historical Park in Richmond. Then celebrate Czech Heritage Day in Schertz with live music by SA Combo and authentic Czech foods.

ARTS AND CRAFTS Denton is celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Arts & Autos this month, with hot rods, classics and custom rides. Quilters in Sulphur Springs, Corsicana and Houston have been busy as bees getting ready for their annual quilt shows, while Ingram’s Texas Arts & Crafts Fair has been Texas’s offical state arts and crafts fair since 1972. Next month in New Iberia, Louisiana, The Shadows hosts an Arts & Crafts Fair with more than 100 vendors and guided tours of the historic building constructed between 1831 and 1834. Find more treasures and gifts at Huntsville’s Fair on the Square with live music throughout the day, plus a variety of handmade crafts and unique art in Pearland’s Arts & Crafts on the Pavilion. You’ll be amazed at what can be sculpted out of wood in Fredericksburg with its Texas Mesquite Arts Festival on downtown’s Marktplatz. From artists’ mecca to juried festival, everybody heads to Edom in October for shopping plus demonstrations of pottery and blacksmithing. Not all art is permanent, and that doesn’t stop the street artists at the popular Kerrville Chalk Festival. For art, food and fun in a historic setting, head to the island for Galveston’s ARToberFEst, with work from more than 100 artists; while art and live music go hand in hand during Brenham’s Texas Arts & Music Festival.

(ALMOST) TOO GOOD TO EAT Nothing could be sweeter than Sugar Month at The Shadows, when southern Louisiana hosts the Pete deGravelles Sugar Tour and, toward the end of the month, Farm Fest. Grapevine lives up to its name with the 33rd Annual GrapeFest®, with samples of more than 150 local wines from dozens of Texas wineries. Some like it hot, and Houston is ground zero for the 20th annual Texas Hot Sauce Festival. In October, Possum Kingdom Lake lives up to its name with its Possum Fest, where they barbecue for fun and hungry visitors benefit from the cook-off. For more grilled goodness, Jasper 65

returns with its Boots & BBQ Festival. The highpoint of Sulphur Springs Indian Summer Days has to be the John Chester Dutch Oven Cookoff, prepared over coals on an open wood fire. Did you know that Madisonville is the mushroom capital of Texas? Well folks there sure know it, and their Texas Mushroom Festival even includes a Shiitake 5K. You’ll be amazed at the different rice dishes on hand at the 82nd International Rice Festival over in Crowley, Louisiana; you’re invited this October, so you gotta go! Seguin honors all things pecan-related with its Pecan Fest Heritage Days; that includes a pub crawl and a celebration of rural heritage at the Red Barn. They say everything’s hotter in Texas, and you’ll find proof in Palestine with its Hot Pepper Festival; from spicy salsas to fiery Cajun cuisine and even a hot pepper eating contest for the truly brave. Paris, Texas might be celebrating its Festival of Pumpkins, but insiders know it’s also a great chance for corn dogs, funnel cakes and chocolate dipped cheesecake. Then wrap up the month of October in Fredericksburg with a full-course celebration of Texas food and wine.

FLORA AND FAUNA The 151st Washington County Fair starts up in just a few weeks; it’s the oldest county fair in the state and has earned those bragging rights. Did you know that Feliciana is Spanish for “The Happy Land?” Those happy folks near St. Francisville, Louisiana are celebrating all things hummingbird this month. And along the Texas Gulf Coast, lady anglers are looking forward to the 25th anniversary Redfish Rodeo. Galveston returns with its 10th annual Shrimp Festival that includes gumbo tastings and a cook-off. Wildlife Sanctuary through February. The second oldest county fair belongs to Seguin, celebrating its 136th anniversary this year and supporting the youth of Guadalupe County. Another milestone can be found in Kerrville with the 40th annual Kerr County Fair. The gardeners at Riverside Nature Center in Kerrville are sharing their wisdom and horticulture next month with their Native Plant Sale. Over Louisiana way, the Angola Prison Rodeo never fails to deliver the wildest show in the South with bareback riding, barrel racing and chariot races. For ideas and inspiration, no other gardening program brings renowned speakers to a historic plantation setting than the Southern Garden Symposium in St. Francisville, Louisiana.

The S teinbach Haus is Castrovilleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Visitor Center. Built in Walbach, Alsace, France between 1618 and 1648, the house was a gift from the citizens of Alsace to Castroville because of the Alsatian roots of the original immigrants that settled here in 1844. The fachwerk framing was shipped to Castroville and Alsatian volunteers came and rebuilt it, and then donated most of the period piece furnishings. More Than Just Mums The Fall Planting Season is the Secret to a Successful Spring

opefully we’ll get a cool front later this month when the autumnal equinox begins, even though September can still be brutally hot in Houston. When it comes to fall garden plans, it’s exciting to think about more than just chrysanthemums. There are so many more options to consider. For example, perennial grasses are a must. These rugged varieties add a clean structural element to an otherwise bland landscape. There are many forms from which to choose; from tall and graceful to fountain-like to short mounds. In fact, fall is a great time to plant almost any perennial. While the parts above ground (leaves, flowers and stems) might get singed from frost this winter, their roots will remain untouched and unaffected. They won’t be harmed and will continue to grow and take hold during the fall and all through winter. This timing allows for the plants to wake up on time and emerge much stronger in the spring. Lastly, remember to have milkweed plants available in your garden for the annual southern migration of the monarch butterfly. These determined beauties can fly hundreds of miles through North America to Mexico where they will overwinter. They rely on

nectar-rich fall flowering plants to stay alive and energized on their long journey. They also need milkweed plants (Asclepias species), preferably the native Texas varieties, on which to lay their eggs along the way. Why Native Texas Milkweed? It’s important to plant native Texas milkweed, like the butterfly milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa) or antelope-horns milkweed (Asclepias asperula), instead of the tropical milkweed (Asclepias curassavica). The latter originated in Mexico and, because it continues to flower and produce leaves throughout the fall and winter, will fool the monarchs into staying longer than they should. If these tropical plants aren’t cut back in mid-October, they can lead to an increase in infections for the monarchs.
