h, October, that month when the mornings whisper “fall” while the afternoons are still talking summer. With the milder weather sneaking in, it’s no surprise that the October calendar is jampacked with festivals and events. We’ve joined forces with several events across our area to help celebrate this exciting time of year. You’ll find us at the Houston Solar Tour, the 68th Annual Bulb & Plant Mart, the Bayou City Art Festival Downtown, 15th Annual Eastwood Historic Home Tour, and at two events down in Galveston, the island’s Downtown Lofts Tour and East End Historical District Annual Fall Garden Tour. We encourage you to get out and enjoy the fruits of our community. By attending some of these events you just might learn a few things. Perhaps you’ll be inspired to embrace solar technology, historic preservation or rekindle your love affair with your garden. You’ll find plenty of inspiration in our feature story on the home of Allison and Bryan Bishop by writer Holly Beretto. This couple is among a recent wave of young residents taking their turn at helping to preserve the historic Eastwood neighborhood. The Bishops’ 1915 Craftsman bungalow is among the many architectural gems in Eastwood, a charming neighborhood, that, like the Woodland Heights was developed by William Wilson in the early part of the 20th century. and driveways offers some stunning ideas for those standard surfaces we often take for granted. And Joetta Moulden reveals yet another exciting makeover, showing how creative thinking can convert a kitchen from drab and dated to functional and fabulous. Our Destinations section returns this month with two nearby getaways to consider. Mary Chavoustie offers up countless reasons to hit the road and relish two of our state’s top most authentic places to visit – the venerable Galveston Island and that Hill Country favorite, Fredericksburg. From technology to travel, preservation to beautification, this issue is full of great ideas to help you make the most of the first month of fall. Smart Planning Converts an Awkward Space to a Special Place BEFORE: An old storage bookcase next to wasted corner with angled ceiling and a refrigerator that stuck out into the room was not utilizing the space in the kitchen.

Karen Keith and I met at a City Art Works fundraiser at the Junior League of Houston. She and husband Eric called because they wanted to remodel their “small, dark and dated” kitchen. “At first, we thought we just wanted a budget remodel and wanted your great ideas,” Karen explained. “The further we got into the process, we decided to do a complete gut and remodel, so the scope of the project changed drastically,” she said. Even so, they were able to use many of the ideas we discussed during that first meeting. Keep an open mind. Sometimes what you think

tip> you want is not what you end up with.

Karen said it was comforting to have an experienced pro to talk to who wasn’t trying to sell them anything, but just offer advice. They particularly liked the written plan of

ideas, paint colors and suggested subcontractors they received during the meeting because they could focus on getting tasks done and making wise choices—instead of making costly mistakes. “Hiring a professional makes so much sense,” Eric explained. “It really helps during those difficult times when making a decision can seem overwhelming,” he said. “We were so lucky to have met you and, later in the project, to have had the help of Kelly Gale Amen, KGA Design Services, as well as other qualified people, to guide us through our remodeling hell,” he added with a smile. The stakes are high because a mistake can either cost a lot

tip> of money, spoil the overall outcome of a kitchen remodeling project, or both.

Clearly the biggest changes were in the layout, cabinets and surfaces. When I first saw the kitchen, the couple had already expanded the kitchen by adding on several feet by moving the sliding glass door wall toward the fence (under roof) and closing in a window located in the wall to the left of the large patio door. The most successful kitchens offer contrast between the

tip> flooring, cabinets, countertop, backsplash and wall color and while staying consistent with hardware and appliance colors.

The couple wanted neutral paint colors (we chose Benjamin Moore’s Ivory Tusk as the wall color) which ended up working with the Brazilian Delicatus Gold granite they eventually chose for the countertops and the Brookhaven natural finish maple cabinets installed by River Oaks Remodeling. Nasser Queiroga installed the granite, from Omni Surfaces Corporation. The 18” x 18” Tuscany Country Dark travertine flooring came from Stone Quarry Inc. The Vetro Cromo metallic tile backsplash (and the flooring) were installed by Westside Flooring. One of the problems I first noticed was how high the existing microwave was located, which did not meet code and was dangerous as a clear scalding hazard. I suggested they move it into a cabinet on the new left wall and drew a quick sketch with storage next to it. (They later decided to move their stainless refrigerator into the cabinet to the right of the microwave.)

tip>

To prevent scalding, install a microwave so the bottom is no higher than 54” from the floor.

If you have the time and are knowledgeable, you can act as your own general contractor like Eric did, which will save you about 25%. But with the savings comes responsibilities, like meeting and getting bids from subcontractors and scheduling the order of the trades that will perform the work. This means calling contractors early in the morning or at night after work to coordinate their arrival. When I was in Miami for my daughter’s wedding, the couple called on Amen to calm them and help them through some incredibly stressful and indecisive moments. “It is always nice to have more than one set of eyes on any project,” Eric said, “and having Kelly was wonderful.” The result? A great looking kitchen!

plenty of room for you and guests to move effortlessly from the refrigerator to stove to sink.

“Our friends and family love the kitchen,” Karen noted. “All of our dinner parties seem to start in the kitchen. When several friends come over to cook, the layout works well because we have so many areas for food prep. It truly is the heart of the home— the place to be,” Eric said.

• Hiring a professional saves very costly mistakes (which effect resale later) and insures a successful outcome of your kitchen remodeling project.

BEFORE: Old existing cabinets, countertops and wall ovens, a too-high microwave, dark flooring and odd desk (behind the dishwasher) spoiled this kitchen’s potential. AFTER: New upper maple Brookhaven cabinets are set back to the right of the sink, creating a feeling of space in the hallway to the dining room. A new Blanco Precision under mount sink from Westheimer Plumbing & Hardware and Hansgrohe faucet and contemporary pulls came from Ferguson Enterprises. A new JennAir stainless oven was installed under the counter on the way to dining room.

On the Surface Patterned concrete can dramatically enhance a large driveway. Photo by Advanced Concrete Designs.

PUNCH UP SIDEWALKS AND DRIVEWAYS TO IMPROVE THE LOOK OF YOUR PROPERTY B y D E B I B R YA N T

As humans we habituate, that is we become accustomed to things after prolonged exposure. We become indifferent to our surroundings, even places we love, such as our homes. This trait is particularly true for the inanimate objects in our landscape, such as sidewalks and driveways. We get used to the purpose they serve, overlooking the opportunity they provide to use them as design elements in the home’s exterior. MATERIAL MATTERS

Your choice of surface material is one way to add panache. “The hottest thing in sidewalks and driveways are pavers,” says Joe Rodriguez, owner of Backyards Plus Lawn Care and Landscaping. Pavers are concrete blocks made into interesting shapes and colors that create a sophisticated look. Rodriguez points out that the cost for pavers has steadily decreased during the past five years. He estimates that you can have them installed for about $10-$20 per square foot, which compares to plain concrete that runs about $4.50-$7 per square foot or decorative concrete that comes in at about $8-$12 per square foot. Pavers have an additional advantage over the long term, according to Rodriguez. Tree roots or ground shifting cause concrete to buckle and crack. “Pavers make it easy to maintain because, in these situations, all you have to do is pull up the pavers in the affected area and reset them,” he says. 18

As another material choice, Rodriguez likes flagstone, which works well in walkways and patios. “They come in a variety of natural colors, shapes and sizes,” he says. “Their cost runs about $15-$22 per square foot.” At Innovative Surfaces of Texas, partner Robert Barajas suggests dressing up your driveways and sidewalks with decorative concrete. Suitable for new or old concrete, the overlay he uses is made of Portland cement mixed with a powder epoxy and bonding agent that easily takes textures and patterns. “It’s a way to make concrete beautiful,” he says. His four-step process takes about four days to complete, depending on weather. Barajas highly recommends that the sealant, the last step in the initial installation, be re-applied every three years or so. Otherwise, the color tends to fade.

Sidewalks and driveways are often a blank canvas—but that BACKYARDS PLUS LAWN CARE AND LANDSCAPING means you can really get creative! 281.900.3899 Ricardo Escobar, president of www.backyardsplus.net Escobar Company, recently customized a client’s hardscape by ESCOBAR COMPANY pressing leaves, taken from trees 713.829.3140 on the property, into the conwww.escobarcompany.com crete while it was still wet. After G & G CONCRETE COATINGS the patterns were firmly imprint281.330.3356 ed, he removed the leaves and finished the concrete by staining INNOVATIVE SURFACES OF it to highlight the design. TEXAS He also has used a special salt 832.607.2998 www.istexas.net in the finishing layer. Initially the concrete looks like pea gravel, MONTALBANO LUMBER but the salt eventually pops, 713.228.9011 achieving a Swiss cheese effect. “It changes the man-made concrete to a softer, more natural look,” he says. Escobar has also applied his ingenuity to help clients who own older homes. The sidewalks for newer homes tend to be 4-feet wide whereas with older homes they run about 3-feet wide. By adding a border on either side of the sidewalk, using media such as pavers or flagstone, he updates the width and the look. ADD - ONS ADD STYLE

Another way to break the habit of plain concrete is to layer on additional design elements. Rodriguez likes water features on expansive hardscape areas, especially in front yards where the water movement really catches the eye. Moving water also adds an auditory element to your overall landscape scheme. If your budget allows for a real knock-out punch, consider Escobar’s water feature with a bridge. For one backyard project, he created a small stream—whose water is pushed along and circulated by a small motor—to run beside a pathway. The water crosses beneath a bridge that is lit from below. Pavers in various shades can add rich color for a durable, decorative hardscape. Photo by Windswept Landscape Studio.

Light It Up

Easy Does It

Adorning sidewalks and driveways with landscape lighting can turn your yard into a 24/7 pleasure. At night, the lights accentuate the lines created by your hardscapes, plus they make an attractive safety feature.

Don’t neglect simpler solutions for sidewalks and driveways. For instance, power washing your hardscapes adds vibrancy to the landscape design. “A high pressure washer does wonders,”

“You can get intricate with the designs, which cost more, but it doesn’t have to be expensive,” says Ricardo Escobar with Escobar Company. His suggestions: • For a less expensive idea, install accent lights made of solar panels along a walkway that leads to the front door, around the back patio, or to line the path to a pond or prayer garden. • A more expensive project is when he replaces a series of pavers with light boxes, which are the same size as the pavers. The light boxes can be arranged in a variety of patterns, such as staggered or in straight lines.

says Vincent Montalbano, salesman with Montalbano Lumber. He recommends Jomax, a bleach activator and non-sudsy soap, made to clean concrete, brick and patio pavers. Speaking from experience, Montalbano advises the DIY crowd to star t away from expansion joints until you get the hang of it since the pressure washer can damage the mor tar and joints.

Where ART thou? THE FINE ART OF FINDING ART FOR YOUR HOME

After a redecorating or remodeling project, we are often faced with daunting blank walls. After just a week or so of admiring that new wall color, we start to crave some visual interest. Paintings, prints and sculptural pieces can give new dimension to a room, but how do you know what will look good and what you’ll want to look at for years to come? It’s simple. Buy art that you love — you are buying for you, not anyone else. “If I like it, I buy it,” says Richard Fluhr, Bayou City Art Festival board member. “You can’t be afraid to buy something. Trust that you love it and go for it. Even if it’s bright purple.” Fluhr is a former instructor at the Art Institute of Houston. He says he collects work by local artists, including artists who are his former teachers from his days as an art student at University of Houston. GALLERY SHOWS

“Falfurrias,” 2000, by Otis Huband, provides a colorful welcome in this foyer.

Simple Strategies for Collecting Art • Buy what you love. You are buying for you, not anyone else. • Choose art with a story. Art found on vacation, art that represents a vacation or experience becomes entwined with special memories. The same goes for works by artists you know or have some personal connection to. • Collect art with a theme. Some collectors prefer color theme such as red or black and white, while others go for specific imagery, such as birds or flowers or bridges.

This modern painting, “Untitled,” 2004, by Ping Lau, offers a nice contrast to antique dining room furnishings, while Pam Knox’s, “Images,” 2004, adds interest to a narrow hallway. 24

FESTIVALS

Local art events offer a great way to discover the types of art that you are drawn to. Houston is blessed with more than 60 art galleries that feature many established and up-and-coming artists. This month’s Bayou City Art Festival Downtown is an excellent place to get started buying art. You can peruse the work of the hundreds of diverse artists on hand and often talk to the actual artists about their work and their techniques. “The price point at the festival is similar to a major chain store, but at the festival you’ll find original work and can have a conversation with the artist,” says Kim Stoilis, Executive Director, Bayou City Art Festival. “All artists are required to be on site for the event. It’s a great education. New buyers may not know that they can commission new work from the artists.” If you like the idea of supporting local artists, another great event to experience is the MFAH Glassell School of Art’s Annual art sale held each May. Speaking of museums, take advantage of Houston’s many museums. Stroll through the galleries to survey what speaks to you. Museums such as The Menil Collection, Contemporary Arts Museum Houston and Houston Center for Contemporary Craft are always free, while many others offer free admission at certain hours during the week.

Welcome Home By Holly Beretto • Photography by Raymond Alderate

A Young Family Adds Personal Touches to an Eastwood Craftsman “This little house is and has been what no other house can ever be to us.”Anne’s House of Dreams, L.M. Montgomery East of downtown, across the railroad tracks, past the massive Maximus Coffee Factory lie the narrow streets of Eastwood. Here, behind wrought-iron gates and high wood fences are tidy homes with wide porches and open shutters, each a cozy enclave tucked away from Houston’s hustle and bustle. One of those homes is a charming Craftsman bungalow belonging to Allison and Bryan Bishop. The beguiling little house is a dark taupe, almost sage, with happy red borders around the windows, and a bright white rocker on the porch. This is a home that says, “Come in. Stay awhile.” “Sometimes, a house just finds you,” says Bryan of their search for a home. The couple had been renting a home in the Woodland Heights, and knew they were priced out of that area. Bryan had spent a great deal of time in the Eastwood area during his radio career in the early- to mid-1990s, as friends he worked with at KRBE-FM owned a home there. One night, Allison was on the computer, looking at listings on HAR.com, and she fell instantly in love with the little Eastwood bungalow. “It was like, 10 o’clock at night,” Bryan says. “And we drove over here and I was like, wait. I used to party here.” It turned out the house was owned by Bryan’s friends Bill and Sonny (who lived nearby) and bought this house with the intent to flip it. But by the time Bryan and Allison looked at the house and expressed interest, it was under contract. “I cried for weeks over that,” says Allison. Fate was on their side, however. The previous contract fell through, and Allison and Bryan moved into the cozy cottage last November. Built in 1915, the home is a kit house, originally from Sears. The style is called Sunbeam. Back around the turn of the century, Sears, Roebuck sold houses along with clothing and other goods through its famed catalogue. The original owner was an architect and built the house from the kit. One of the few kit houses in Houston, Allison believes it’s the only Sunbeam model. “I guess you could say we live in a manufactured home!” she laughs. If that conjures up images of sterile, cookie-cutter layouts and an utter lack of charm, you best think again. The Bishop’s home is charming, cozy and overflowing with char-

acter. The formal living room has a huge fireplace flanked by built-in bookshelves, crammed with everything from literary anthologies to rock star biographies, the professional lives of their owners reflected in them. Allison loves antique books, and her father-in-law trolls garage sales and used bookshops to bring her titles to add to her collection. Some of them are proudly displayed on the right side of the fireplace. On the wall across from the entry is a distressed mirror. “We found that at Rosenkavalier,” says Bryan. “She was going to get rid of it, but we thought it would look great in the house. We picked it up for something like $25.” The walls of the living and dining room are painted yellow, inspired by the couple’s love of Nantucket. They’ve visited a few times over the years and both were struck by how airy and bright the homes were. To them, yellow seemed the perfect color to evoke their Nantucket memories, and mirror the island’s sunny charm. Around the rim of the dining room, just below the ceiling, is a wooden plate rail. Allison and Bryan filled it with plates from their travels. An intricate blue pattern is from England. Two flowered plates were Allison’s grandmother’s. The plain white one with the straw-looking pattern is from their beloved Nantucket. Sitting at the front corner of the house, the dining room boasts its original, paned windows. When the couple bought the home, all the windows had blinds. One night, sitting in the living room, sharing a bottle of wine, they decided to take down all the blinds. The result is a home that bursts with light, adding to its charms. “It was the best decision we ever made,” says Bryan. The original home ended at the back wall of the serviceable kitchen, but previous owners knocked out the wall and tacked on an addition in the 1950s. The result is a wide den that stretches along the entire width of the home. Allison and Bryan furnished it with deep and comfy Ektorp couches and

armchairs from IKEA, and Bryan’s father built custom bookshelves along the side wall, designed to hold Bryan’s CD and vinyl collection. The coffee table dates back to Allison’s college apartment, but she bought some cloth from High Fashion Home in a funky geometrical pattern and upholstered the table top, creating a brown, blue and orange splash of color amid the modern Ektorp white. At the top of the narrow wood staircase, the master bath boasts the home’s original claw food tub. Adding to the early-1900s persona of the home, the couple bought an old dresser that was converted into a vanity. In a nod to these more modern times, the sink is a wide, deep white bowl with a modern, angled faucet. Completing the old-meets-new look to the room is a round table in the corner. Bryan bought it from Nadeau for Allison as a present “so she’d have somewhere to sit and do her make up.” Next to the bathroom is Lucy’s room, painted green and furnished with the cradle where Bryan slept as a baby and a rocking chair that some of Allison’s students at Episcopal presented to her. When they gave it to her, it was somewhat shabby, but Allison stripped refinished it. More built-in bookshelves courtesy of Bryan’s dad hold photos and children’s books. “I splurged on Lucy’s bedding, though,” admits Lucy. “It’s from Doodles. I wanted her to have something new, since we knew we were blending old and new in the room.” Connecting Lucy’s room and the master bedroom is the original sleeping porch. Where it once served as a summer sleeping space for the home’s residents in Houston’s hot summers of yesteryear, today Allison and Bryan use it as a spot to sit and watch the world go by. It overlooks Rusk Street and the Bishops furnished it with a couple of chairs and a 34

table, making it the perfect spot to sip wine and laze away an evening. “We wanted the master bedroom to feel like every great high-end luxury hotel we could think of,” says Bryan. So, they furnished it with deep mahogany woods, a massive king-size bed and a globe in a stand. A door opens into a dormer closet, where they’ve put in a metal rack for storage and a desk. At just 2,000 square feet, the little cottage on Rusk might seem too small and snug, but thanks to the capable decorating by the Bishops, and the sound structure already in place, the home feels open and airy, and deceptively large. Its overall feeling is one where guests are welcomed in, and strangers become friends. “We love this neighborhood,” says Allison. “We know who our neighbors are, and the neighborhood will host wine nights and events so we get to know people. And it’s an eclectic group, lots of craftsmen, artsy types, and many second- and third-generation Eastwood residents.” The Bishops agree that this house is home, and Eastwood is where they want Lucy to grow up. “This is our home for awhile,” says Bryan. Allison smiles at him. “We’re not going anywhere.”

TOUR HISTORIC EASTWOOD The 15th Annual EASTWOOD HISTORIC HOME TOUR is set for Oct.16-17 and runs from noon to 5 p.m. each day. William Wilson, who also developed the Woodland Heights, established this historic neighborhood in 1913. Eastwood is located east of downtown, near the University of Houston. Today, the neighborhood is experiencing a renaissance, due to an influx of new residents drawn by the near-downtown location who are interested in preserving the area’s historic charm. The community of custom-built homes reflects the early 20th-century fondness for Craftsman, Arts & Crafts, Foursquare and Mission architecture. Eastwood boasts one of Houston’s largest intact collections of these architectural styles. The tour features seven remarkable homes, plus the 1920 Church of the Redeemer and the 1916 Lantrip Elementary School, HISD's oldest in-use school. Discounted tickets of are available for online purchase at www.eastwoodcivicassociation.org, and will be available during the tour for $15 at Lantrip Elementary (100 Telephone, Houston, TX, 77023).

The master bath blends the old and the new. The clawfoot tub is original to the house. The dresser, also an antique, was converted to serve as a vanity. The tiny drawers in the vanity left Allison with little space for cosmetics and lotions, so Bryan bought a new table and dressing stool from Nadeau so she’d have space to make up.

Galveston Island

BY MARY CHAVOUSTIE

Make the quick drive down 45 to revisit this renewed and resilient costal retreat Forget just talking about Galveston—pack up the family and go! A visit to Galveston Island is long overdue. Trendy decor, specialty wine and great restaurants are all part of the new Historic Downtown District. While you’re there, give a nod to the majestic 1877 Tall Ship Elissa docked at the Texas Seaport Museum. There’s no need to rush back home. Settle into the island lifestyle with an overnight stay. Choose from luxury hotels, family-priced motels, vacation rentals and historic B&Bs— you’ll find appealing accommodations for every budget. Take in an evening performance at The Grand 1894 Opera House, “The Official Opera House of Texas,” or plan a sunrise walk along any of the island’s 32 miles of beach. Galveston has become an arts and entertainment paradise with Saturday ArtWalks happening every six weeks along Historic Postoffice Street. Fall’s ARToberFest, Oct. 16-17, is hailed as Galveston’s premier art event. Look for the one-of-a-kind tree sculptures that exemplify Galveston’s inspiring resilience. Area sculpture artists transformed trees, uprooted by Hurricane Ike, into unique pieces of art. Take in the self-guided Tree Sculpture Tour that winds throughout the historic city. The Galveston Island Convention & Visitor Bureau can help you discover even more great getaway ideas. Call 866.505.4456 or access www.galvestoncvb.com to plan your next trip. LEFT: (From top )

Scenes from Dickens on The Strand, which takes place Dec. 3-4, 2010

Post Office Street in downtown Galveston is an architectural treasure and a food lovers paradise. The 1894 Opera House and the adjacent Strand District feature entertainment, shopping and turn-of-the-century architectural charm.

Photography by Lee DeForke, Jr.

Hear ye, Hear ye! Dust off your top hat and feathered bonnet—Galveston’s 36th Annual Dickens on The Strand takes place Dec. 3-4. Festivities begin with the sounds of bagpipes and merriment filling the air. Costumed street vendors, entertainers and even the Queen, join Victorian attired visitors in heralding the holidays. For festival info, go to www.galveston.com/dickensonthestrand.

the Poodle. I’ve been pretty busy the last few months raising my five kids, who were all born at that unfortunate puppy mill where we lived with 161 other dogs. Lordy, are we glad we’ve moved on from there! Now that my babies are all out on their own starting their new lives, it’s time for this 4-year-old momma to think about a new life, too. I have a microchip and I am officially retired from puppy-making now, so I’m ready. I’m good with kids and other dogs, you see, I know a lot about being sweet and nurturing and showing love, but living at that ol’ puppy mill didn’t give me a chance to become a sophisticated lady. I dream of being like that Eliza Doolittle from My Fair Lady. I think with a few lessons on things like how to walk like a proper lady and what a girl should and shouldn’t do inside the house, that I would make a fine society gal who’d be welcome at any garden party or swanky soiree in town. The HSPCA folks have taken care of me since June, so I hope you’re ready to help me become a real lady right away. Kindly request my ID# A10703317, and we’ll be on our way!
