WE ARE experts WHEN IT COMES TO

ctober is here: get ready for fall weather (who’s not ready?) and a season of exciting, home-focused events for every interest. This month’s calendar features a well-rounded sampling of tours, ranging from historic neighborhoods to modern innovations. Lovers of charming homes from past eras can tour one of Houston’s largest intact concentrations of Craftsman, Arts & Crafts, Foursquare and Mission architecture during the Eastwood Historic Home Tour. Don’t miss our feature story on the 1920s bungalow of Eastwood resident Roberto Cervantes, beautifully written and photographed by Sarah Gandy. History buffs can trace the progression of Houston’s skyline during the Greater Houston Preservation Alliance’s Walking Tour, featuring Downtown’s Evolving Skyline. For a side trip to the ’60s, our feature story on the new look of the Houston House apartment building provides a groovy perspective on downtown living. For those who prefer to ogle homes that are at the forefront of architecture, the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects showcases nine homes that represent achievements in contemporary design. The Houston Solar Tour highlights the nexus of innovative design and engineering with 17 homes and business across the greater Houston area open for tour-

Houston House & Home is proud to be a part of this tour by producing the official guide to the tour within this issue, starting on p. 19. Congrat-ulations to all the homeowners and designers on another outstanding tour! Without a doubt, there’s much to experience, admire and learn about happening all over our great city. he mantra adopted by Morning Star Builders CEO Ted Cummins is “the difference is in the details.” With one glance at the interior of this custom home in Hidden Falls, the visitor knows that Cummins takes this mantra very seriously. This Tuscan-style villa is a 2011 Southern Living Showcase home in Hidden Falls, a gated community in Cypress, Texas and boasts over 5,000 square feet of gorgeous details, including a stucco/brick exterior with custom wrought iron accents. The intricately patterned bricks are just one of many recurring motifs that flow throughout the house. Upon walking through the front door, the visitor is treated to the expansive living area featuring extensive beam work and brick accent walls in the great room and a custom-built entertainment center with a hidden TV storage. The great room segues seamlessly into the kitchen giving it a large and open feel, perfect for parties and gatherings. The kitchen, which Cummins considers “the focal point of the house,” features the Morning Star signature brick barrel-vaulted ceiling with distressed beams, knotty alder cabinets and a built-in kitchen table with a custom walnut top. The stainless steel appliances are strategically placed to optimize productivity and efficiency. It only takes one look at this

16

kitchen to realize that cooking is about to get much easier. The backyard patio includes an outdoor kitchen, fireplace and a retractable outdoor movie screen with a mounted projector creating the ultimate outside entertainment experience. This stunning home includes many other incredible details such as faux painting, honed limestone countertops in the master bedroom, beautiful hardwood and stone flooring throughout, a candle fireplace in the master bathroom, a brick accent wall with wine storage in the dining room, iPad controls for HVAC, lighting, music and security – just to name a few. You have to see this home to really appreciate the attention to detail and craftsmanship that is the hallmark of Morning Star Builders. For information on tours of this spectacular home visit Houston Southern Living Showcase on Facebook. Morning Star Builders has been a preferred builder in Hidden Falls in Cypress since 2007 and in High Meadow Ranch in Magnolia since 2002. ABOUT THE PROJECT Family and friends are important to this family who wanted a beautiful, yet relaxed home for family times and entertaining. This custom-built home welcomes visitors with a charming country French façade, complete with arches and stonework. The

ARCHITECT: WES THOMAS DESIGNS, 281.565.6060 FAUX FINISHES: MARILYN GARBER OF GARBER FINE ART through the Designer

home’s interiors have a transitional classic style.

Texture was a big factor in the design from the iron railing to warm wood tones, rustic beams and natural stone. Antique light fixtures add character. Colors are kept soft in tones of butter, grey green and soft mocha with a splash of paprika. Special paint finishes on doors, cabinets and walls add interest and depth. The expansive kitchen opens to the breakfast room and family room to provide the heart of the first floor. A master suite upstairs with vaulted ceilings and expansive views provides a quiet retreat.

ABOUT THE PROJECT The newly remodeled outdoor oasis was the first step initiating the homeowner’s desire for a residence that would integrate comfortable elegance as well as reflect their sophisticated style.

This stately River Oaks home received a kitchen facelift, a perfect example of how to enhance a space without completely changing the footprint. Proper space planning,

along with appropriately scaled furniture in an updated color palette transformed this home with casual grace. The new design impacted all downstairs areas of the home, especially the kitchen, open family room, and the gracious master suite. The new flow within the spaces visually opens the rooms to maximize all areas and create a wonderful backdrop for entertaining friends and colleagues.

ABOUT THE PROJECT Set on a lot that backs up to the Hogg Bird Sanctuary and Bayou Bend, the home boasts lots of open space with high ceilings and large windows. In the kitchen, a turquoise banquette and irregular shaped table contrast with the many horizontal layers of stone and glass tile in this contemporary, yet earthy kitchen.

For the spa-inspired master bath, wrap-around vanities, designed with a continuous stone countertop, unify the space and create a natural flow. An oversized air tub anchors a wall of windows that naturally warms the space while providing privacy with textured glass. A steam room further connects the bath to nature by opening onto a sundeck. The Ambra tile that resembles ripples of water was installed in the steam/shower, which functions as a major focal point. Various gray tones of flooring, countertops, and walls are offset by the warm glow from mother-of-pearl shell mirror frames.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER Jane-Page Crump, ASID is a past president of ASID, is the president of Jane Page Design Group, an award-wining interior design firm that specializes in new construction and remodeling.

She asked for a very streamlined look but with dark stained cabinets and light counters and backsplash. One of the desired goals was to have two places to entertain their grandchildren within the kitchen. The seating area for casual dining was relocated to the area below the two skylights, where a new decorative light fixture was placed to illuminate the table. Wendt Design Group extended the bar counter to accommodate three bar stools for the children. A small plasma TV was installed as well, and services either the bar or kitchen with a simple change in the arm direction.

9 1003 Gardenia Drive LYNNE T. JONES, ASID Lynne T. Jones Interior Design 281.437.3307 ABOUT THE PROJECT This kitchen was designed in the Arts & Crafts style with decorative backsplash tiles from that period. The space is cleanlined and efficient. One of the clients is a culinary graduate and wanted this kitchen to truly be a working kitchen for a serious cook, so two generous islands were worked into the plan. Granite was used for the countertops and the rest of the backsplash is finished with white subway tiles. Overhead lighting is provided by both recessed can lights and decorative blown glass pendants on a track. Upper windows and a nice-sized single window provide ample natural light as well. The colors and textures combine to create a welcoming center for the home.

ABOUT THE PROJECT The original kitchen in this Garden Oaks home was small and closed-off, but had plenty of storage. The design approach was

NICOLE BRUNO-MARINO Cabinet Innovations 713.461.6424

to open up the space by removing walls and keep the same amount of storage, while transforming the kitchen into a gathering place with a lounge and dining area.

The wall that backs up the bar area remained and was utilized for storage, while the other walls were removed to open up the space. The cooktop moved from the peninsula to a working island where a stainless hood was installed above. The new island provides the same amount of storage that was lost with the removal of the walls. The dinning table was relocated to the back side of the island, overlooking the pool. The former dining area became a lounge area with a dramatic light feature and an overstuffed chair.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER For more than a decade, Nicole has pulled from her extensive knowledge, creativity and organizational skills to expertly guide clients through the design, ordering and installation process.

Budget Beauty

BEFORE

BY JOETTA MOULDEN • PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANET LENZEN

A couples’ 1950s kitchen be-bops into the modern era with smart upgrades that didn’t break the bank I first met David Fontaine back in 2005 when he was single and Shelterstyle.com decorated his living and dining rooms and sunroom. Back then, David wanted to work with inherited furniture and not spend money remodeling since his duplex is in a popular teardown area (see the November, 2005 Houston House & Home makeover, “Eureka”). 52

Since then, he married Elaine, and I have helped the newlyweds with their master bedroom (see July 2011 Houston House & Home, “Warming Trend”) and now their c. 1953 galley-style teardown kitchen. “Elaine and I were distracted when we looked into our dated kitchen with its mismatched appliances and boring finishes. Next to the beautifully re-designed other rooms, the kitchen was a real eyesore,” the Italian cuisine aficionado explained.

house& home | O c t o b e r 2 0 1 1 | h o u s e a n d h o m e o n l i n e . com

The couple had plenty of ideas—in fact, too many of them—throwing them into indecision and design overload. “The more we ‘designed’, the more frustration we encountered. A few weeks into the project we decided we needed help and called you. We didn’t want to spend money on components that if not properly coordinated could result in an expensive hodge-podge,” he explained. David explained that in years past they had interviewed several kitchen-remodeling companies about modest options for improving the kitchen in their home, which is in a popular teardown area. The couple did not want to invest a king’s ransom in a masterpiece that did not make any financial sense. None ever put forth a sensible plan, David said. All wanted to spend big bucks tearing down load-bearing walls, installing granite countertops, new custom cabinets, hardwood floors and other building blocks for spectacular kitchen makeovers. “Elaine and I decided that what we needed was a way to update what was already in place and do much of the work ourselves. You were the perfect person to help us make this project a success,” David explained. We met one Saturday morning and measured, discussed ideas, materials, vendors and what to expect. A plan emerged and the concept was clearly made for the couple and this house. “As veteran do-it-yourselfers, we had an affordable road map to completion,” David said. “We were ecstatic.” They began by stripping their l950s cabinet doors to bare wood in the garage. Then David and Elaine sanded and painted the doors and surrounds with white industrial grade, self-priming Benjamin Moore Alkyd Metal & Wood Enamel in #C-163-01. The white countertop was replaced with Pionite laminate in “Greige” SC210” installed by Venetian Blind & Floor Carpet One. The backsplash was first covered in water-resistant Sheetrock, then in inexpensive 3” x 6” Bone White subway tiles (United States Ceramic Tile Company #078-36) purchased locally by a tile store going out of business (also available at Home Depot.) The floor had several layers of linoleum, covered by vinyl tiles. I recommended Forsyth Floor Company, who installed vinyl flooring to match the hardwoods in the nearby dining room. During the installation, Forsyth discovered that the floor underneath the old dishwasher was rotted through to the slab and the old dishwasher was literally chopped out. This provided a legitimate reason to replace it with a new one and to repair the subfloor. To compensate for irregularities in height, the entire kitchen floor was covered in new plywood. “The installation went perfectly and the look of the low-luster vinyl has fooled many observers into thinking they are standing on solid oak floors stained like the rest of the house,” David said. Since the gas range was only four years old and it was white, they decided to keep it, replacing the vent hood. Not only was the old vent hood ineffective, it was the wrong color. When they removed it, the couple discovered a nest of problems—the gas pipe was directly in the way of the exhaust duct. I suggested they call Kenny Jaines at Vogler Sheet Metal Co., who solved the problem by constructing a duct that attached to the new hood, bypassing the gas pipe and linking up to a new exhaust outlet on the building’s exterior--an inexpensive fix that has worked perfectly. “During our planning meeting, you warned us that we should expect to incur electrical problems. When we removed the range hood the kitchen lights went out,” David explained. Behind the hood was a tangled web of wires, no doubt the work of a previous installer who got the hood working but compromised safety through poor wiring and no grounding—a scenario repeated elsewhere in the kitchen. The old wiring was scorched or melted at key junctures. They called Dan Brown at Dempsey Electric who talked them into installing recessed lighting and dimmers, which they really like. “To save money, we purchased the lighting materials online and Dan did the installation with a discount from Dempsey Electric. “The electrical was an expensive and unexpected aspect of the kitchen remodel, but we know it was money well spent for our safety and peace of mind,” David explained.

AFTER: Pots and pans are now well-ordered, thanks to Ikea open shelving and curtain rod functioning as a pot rack behind the door. An Ikea magnetic knife holder takes advantage of vertical storage space. New brushed-nickel doorknobs and hinges go with new Ikea pulls that match those on the customized Ikea worktable. A new white vent hood and increased storage make this kitchen easy to work in. BEFORE: White walls and white laminate countertops and backsplash, brass door knobs, mismatched vent hood and lack of storage made this kitchen difficult to cook in.

TRADE SECRETS • Establish an overall plan before you start updating your kitchen. Don’t discard anything until a professional sees if it can be integrated into your plan. • Money saved on a budget plan can easily pay for design services. • Eliminate costly mistakes. Hire an objective professional to help you stay within your budget. • Sometimes the most effective strategy is to not gut your kitchen, but to rethink the cabinets and spaces that are already paid for.

An Ikea island was turned into an against-the-wall work surface by trimming the legs and adding casters from Mapp Caster & Supply. The casters allow it to move out of the way to better clean behind it. The couple tied in the birch finish to rest of the kitchen by buying birch planks from Houston Custom Woods and David’s furniture-maker cousin trimmed out the new niche above the work table, built a new windowsill over the sink as well as a birch veneer end cap for the exposed side or the existing white cabinets. They also purchased two Ikea birch veneer shelves for extra storage for pots and pans. “We love the open shelves better than a pot rack because we can keep the lids with the pots and don’t have to search for them in the back reaches of our cabinets,” David explained. Another clever idea was to use an inexpensive $30 brushed nickel Ikea curtain rod outfitted with large S-hooks to fully use the space behind the door for flatter items like skillets. “Lower on the wall we mounted small hooks for a large pizza baking stone that took up a lot of space,” he said. To finish off the kitchen and tie it into the rest of the house, they painted the walls Sherwin Williams “Straw Doll” #1361 and Benjamin Moore “Super White” enamel #310-01 on the trim. They also used some leftover fabric from the living room to make their hobbled Roman shade. “We had hoped to buy a larger refrigerator, but when you have a l950s house with l950s appliance openings, you more or less are going to end up with what works and not exactly what you would have liked. But that’s OK—thanks to you, we enjoy our charming kitchen every day for what it is,” David smiled.

URBAN GEM

Downtown’s iconic mid century highrise gets a modern-day makeover that recalls its 1960s debut BY SANDRA COOK

THE COOLEST DOWNTOWN ADDRESS FROM THE LATE 1960s has been made over for this millennium, yet retains is ’60s soul. Built in 1966 and designed by noted Washington, D.C.-area architect Charles Goodman, the 31-story building was instantly considered one of the most stylish apartment buildings the city. The mid-century modern highrise has recently undergone a ’60s-cool renovation that showcases the stylish functionality of midcentury modern architecture and interiors. More than one-third of the 396 units have been fully renovated and 90 percent are occupied. The apartment renovations are being completed at a rate of about 40 units per month, with the entire building expected to be done by June 2012. FROM THE GROUND UP In addition to the upgrades to each unit, the amenities and common areas have been revamped for the modern era. The generous ground-floor lobby is a celebration of mid-century style. Also at street level, the new Go Fresh! gourmet café now serves breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week. The building also includes multiple spaces to work and play, including a pool, gym, full-size basketball court, conference room, media room and party lounge. Four rising stars of interior design decked out units in the iconic Houston House building as a way to help Houstonians see the dynamic design potential for units in the building. We have featured each designer and their work on the following pages. To read more about the building, go to www.HoustonHouseApts.com.

SABAJAWDA

Saba Jawda mixed neutral colors, luxe furnishings and playful pieces to create an apartment that is a relaxing retreat from city life. WITH DEGREES IN ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIOR DESIGN, SABA JAWDA co-owns the design firm Jawda and Jawda with her sister Sarah. Her design of the Houston House unit incorporates a both neutral pieces with exquisite details. “My vision and goal for the Houston House unit is to inspire a world of wonder, an oasis that’s a retreat from the everyday,” says Jawda. Jawda’s design talent shines in her use of large pieces in each of the relatively small rooms. “Design, for me, is about depth and utilizing it to one's advantage,” says Jawda. “Using large-scale pieces in a small area actually creates the sense of a much larger space. The combination of larger pieces in clusters creates balance. Knowing how to organize them, along with the importance of the hues, is the key.” Jawda prefers to utilize different pieces and colors that aren’t often used together, a method of mixing and matching the unusual to create contrast. She also chose to use a neutral palette to bring the outdoors in. “The views are spectacular and I think the finished product works wonderfully with it,” she says. 58

GRAPHIC-DESIGNER-TURNED-INTERIOR-DESIGNER CHRIS NGUYEN takes inspiration for small-space living from dense metropolitan areas, such as New York City and Tokyo, where square footage is gold. “It's really fascinating to see the clever visual and practical solutions that these city dwellers come up with,” says Nguyen. “Small space living provides such a unique opportunity for ingenuity. In a metropolis like Houston where there is as much legroom as there is headroom, I had to really scrutinize and break down the concepts from people who live in small spaces out of necessity and find a way to make them appealing for those who would be choosing to do so.” Nguyen made an effort to define the space in terms other than its square feet. “Looking at the number, mental limitations form and I wanted to find ways to remove those,” says Nguyen. “I focused on embracing the space for what it was and making it more about the quality of living within a home this size rather than how much stuff will fit. I think it's easy with a large space to mistakenly fill it with things just because there's space for it, but with a small space that isn't an option.” The designer says he employed the opposite of what might seem to be logical for this space. “Instead of filling it with small things and reflective surfaces to make it look bigger, I put in regular-scale pieces to emphasize the usability of the apartment and solid color contrast to define how the separate spaces work,” explains Nguyen. “When you walk in, instead of seeing a series of compromises, you see a comfortable place to sit, eat and sleep. Going with mid-century modern and contemporary modern pieces helped a lot as they tend to be less voluminous in form, while remaining full in function.”

CHRISNGUYEN

Chris Nguyen’s design features bold color choices, such as a black wall in the living room, which visually de-clutters the space, while allowing the sofa, lamp and artwork to stand out. 62

RICHARD SANCHEZ

ACHIEVING A BALANCE OF RICH COLORS AND BOLD SHAPES WAS KEY FOR RICHARD SANCHEZ’S take on the unit he designed. “Working and living in Houston's downtown can be overwhelming at times and a level of confidence is required for this type of habitation,” says Sanchez. “This is why I chose black. Black represents power and confidence. In retrospect, green is proven to have a soothing effect—even photos of vegetation have a calming effect. By placing these two colors in the same room, this balance of bold and calm converge and work together in seamless harmony.” Sanchez took a minimalist approach to maximize comfort in the space. “By applying the less-is-more concept often applied in graphic design, I aimed at a space void of complication,” says Sanchez. The designer followed the Eastern philosophy of the more you have, the more problems you have. “I knew this notion would work well because this belief can easily—key word, easily—be applied in everyday living,” says Sanchez. “Likewise, your home is everyday living.” The designer sought to emphasize that the Houston House building sits in the middle of the thriving downtown scene. “I wanted to give the young and young at heart the sense of belonging to this scene when, in fact, they actually make the downtown scene just by living there,” says Sanchez. Taking inspiration from Eames-style furniture, such as a pair of Eames DAR Chairs, Richard Sanchez showcased mid-century modern furniture throughout the apartment.

AN INTERIOR DESIGNER FOR THE KIRKSEY ARCHITECTURE TEAM, KRISTEN JOHNSON is an expert at making the most of a neutral palette by layering subtle colors and textures. “This way, you can use accessories and artwork to punctuate the space,” says Johnson. Space planning in the small apartment was key for Johnson. “Since there wasn’t a dedicated dining room, I started with the idea of creating a dining space that was functional but still felt a part of the living area,” she says. “I also converted the second bedroom into a home office because that room was tres petite! To me, it functioned more efficiently as a workspace than a tiny room with a huge bed inside.” Johnson employs metal finishes in the same way she utilizes jewelry. “When it’s done right—silver and gold jewelry look beautiful together,” says Johnson. “A decorated room without metal accents is like putting on your favorite little black dress without a pair of earrings. It’s nice to add just a touch of sparkle with muted tones and textures. You need some subtlety and a bit of glitz to make everything look balanced.” The expansive city views were a big influence on Johnson’s design. “The city views from Houston House are incredible,” she says. “The last thing I wanted to do was block those huge windows! I added sheer linen panels at the windows to soften up the architecture and frame the views. I didn’t want fully traversing draperies—I treated them like an obi sash—just a strip of fabric on either side of the window.” 66

KRISTEN JOHNSON

Kristen Johnson chose a large sofa to anchor the living room, the Florence Knoll piece with slim metal legs almost floats on top of the carpet. Neutral tones, touches of nature and an airy glass-topped table lend serenity to the space.

ABOVE: The Eastwood home artist/designer/architect Roberto Cervantes exhibits clever creative touches at every turn. The arched built-in cabinet is original to the kitchen, which is painted a wasabi-like green. The colorful objects on the shelves complement the striped table, designed by Roberto.

OPPOSITE: The stair landing was added during renovation, replacing a small doorway that opened to steep attic stairs. A new stairway was also constructed in order to match the original oak wood floors throughout and to make the steep angle less severe. The painting is by Ryan Gieger.

Craftsman with a Twist

Houston designer creates a nature-inspired bungalow redo Story & Photography by SARAH GANDY

Back in 2006, designer Roberto Cervantes decided to buy his 1920s bungalow in Eastwood for practical purposes as much as anything. “The house had been renovated in 2005 and all the electrical and plumbing had been redone,” says Roberto, “That meant I could get an inspection on it, get a mortgage approved and move right in.” All of these were essential elements for Roberto who was looking to move not only his home, but also his business from of a rented loft space. Another key characteristic of the property: there was ample space in the backyard for Roberto to build a separate studio for his multi-faceted design business. “There was nothing wrong with the house,” says Roberto. “Most peo70

ple would say it was fine.” And yet, for the designer and artist, best known publicly for his restaurant interiors, such as Barnaby’s, T’afia, Coppa, and Brasserie 19, the home still needed some refinements. Though the ideas for the house would start flowing quickly, any renovations would have to wait. “I moved in and decided to stabilize my business in the home first,” says Roberto. “Meanwhile I designed and built the studio behind the house, paying for that as I went along. Once that building was complete I was able to move my business there and begin work on the house itself. I didn’t do any renovations until 18 months after I moved in.”

“We decided to open the kitchen to the dining room in order to make it a more livable space for today.” Ideas in Motion When the time came for the home redo, Roberto collaborated on the design with Ben Johnston (at the time the two had a design business together, but each now owns separate companies—Roberto owns Archi-Arts and Ben owns Avondale Design Studio). One of the most dramatic changes came in the kitchen area which had been chopped up with pantry spaces and doorways. “People during that time period tended to break up homes into compartments,” says Roberto. “But we decided to open the kitchen to the dining room in order to make it a more livable space for today.” To make sense of the new open floor plan, Roberto and Ben designed a Craftsman-inspired partition wall with an arched opening which helped delineate the kitchen from the dining room. “We also decided to paint the rooms different colors—green for the kitchen and orange for the dining room—in order to define the spaces separately.” Another minor floor plan change that created significant visual impact was the decision to open the attic stairs to the main living area. When Roberto bought the house a small door closed off the stunted set of stairs leading upstairs. “The stair landing didn’t exist and the stairs were extremely steep,” says Roberto. “So we got rid of the door, replaced the stair treads with oak to match the rest of the house, and made the slope of the stairs less severe. We designed a new stair landing to come out into the space, which also created a nice focal wall for art or family photos.”

RIGHT: In the dining room, a large painting by Houston artist Seth Alverson over looks the old zinc-topped dining table made by Noir. Roberto and architect Ben Johnston designed a Craftsman-inspired wall to provide a distinct boundary between the rooms, yet allow the two rooms to feel connected. The chairs are goatskinbacked Tyler Chairs by Oly, while the shell chandelier uses naturally occurring holes in the shells to string them together.

“A lot of people are into neutrals, but I wanted something richer. The colors I used are saturated, but not unnatural.” Smoother Surface Among other issues were some aesthetic choices that previous owners had made. “The walls were all textured; the ceiling had been troweled,” says Roberto. “So we smoothed out all of those surfaces and added wood trim in order to be more consistent with the time period.” Some of the more intricate trim work occurs on the living and dining room ceilings, where stained wood is applied in a Craftsman-derived pattern. “It’s the look of a coffered ceiling, only flattened,” says Roberto. “It’s an embellishment to the room that brings a deep, rich color without lots of contrast. It’s actually a modification of what would be typically seen.” When it was time to pick colors for the home, Roberto drew inspiration from the home itself and its surroundings. “A lot of people are into neutrals, but I wanted something richer. The colors I used are saturated, but not unnatural,” says Roberto. “The orange is a terra cotta color and it’s found in the tiles on the front porch. The green is a compliment to that orange. The orange you could get through rust, the green comes from a copper patina—they’re still colors found in nature.” Likewise, Roberto kept a natural, but visually stimulating palette when it came to furnishing the home. “Throughout the house I’ve used wood, metal, and hides,” says Roberto. “These are all nonsynthetic ways of showing color, pattern, texture, and patina.”

RIGHT: The generously sized chaise, covered in fabric by Kravet, sits opposite a matching sofa. The patchwork rug is handmade and available through Archi-Arts. The sconces above the fireplace are antiques from Canada, while the copper pendants are from Rejuvenation Lighting and Hardware.

74

75

BELOW: Piano is a Helpinstill Roadmaster, which was marketed in the 1970s as a portable piano that entertainers could easily take on the road. It was invented by Charles Helpinstill, who still performs in Houston under the name Ezra Charles. Roberto bought the iconic piano twelve years ago through and ad in the Greensheet.

ABOVE: Roberto chose a soft grey paint for the office to provide a visual break from the other color-saturated rooms. Custom wood tables were made by a Houston-based craftsman from Texas pecan trees. The large painting and the comic strip installation art are both by Roberto Cervantes. The handmade patchwork rug is available through Archi-Arts.

Whether it’s ceiling trim, goat hide chairs, or light fixtures, Roberto isn’t afraid to twist the inspiration from the past in order to create his own unique space. Musing on the two lighting pendants in the living room, Robert notes, “Light fixtures from (the 1920s) were pretty clunky and actually not very beautiful, so sometimes you have to take departures in your decorating. The living room fixtures are more of a ’50s style, and when they were shown in chrome in the catalog they indeed look very ’50s. But in a copper finish they take on a completely different look—and suddenly they work with this space.” Out the back door, Roberto’s new 900-square-foot studio also shows that different decades of design can live in harmony. The studio stands in contrast to the brick bungalow—it’s a modern construction with flecks of color throughout the grey façade. The two buildings, says Roberto, exemplify his philosophy: “I appreciate modern design, but I also appreciate past designs—and ultimately that’s where all modern design came from. It all draws inspiration from the past.”

OPPOSITE: A painting by artist Ryan Gieger hangs above an Italian Deco antique dresser in Roberto’s peacock-hued bedroom.
