oustonians never seem to tire of remarking about the arrival of fall weather. Crisp, sunny days spur us to get the blood flowing, which explains the abundance of fall events across the city. From markets to classes to home tours, the calendar is filled with interesting adventures for just about anyone. October is a huge month for home tours and a fun time for the staff here at Houston House & Home. Each year we work to coordinate coverage of the various home tours around town and tackle the tough task of selecting just one home for our cover story. With the Houston Solar Tour, Eastwood Historic Home Tour, Galveston East End Garden Tour and the AIA Houston Home Tour happening this month, we had many interesting homes to consider. Surveying these choices made us realize the diverse strengths of the Houston area. Among the homes we considered were homes located in historic neighborhoods, preservation triumphs, new homes built with innovative technology and outstanding achievements in design. We selected the Modern home of Gavin and Laura Jones, which is one of the eight homes on this year’s AIA Home Tour. The

October is Kitchen & Bath Month By Peggy McGowen, ASID, CMKBD, RID • Kitchen & Bath Concepts, Houston, TX

T

he weather is cooling down, and the social scene is heating up. People are thinking about the upcoming holidays, entertaining friends and family in… their kitchen. They know that good food, fun and fond memories are made in… their kitchen. They’re also thinking about (oh no)… their kitchen, and how badly in need of remodeling it is. Well, it’s probably too late to plan, design, order and construct a major kitchen remodel before the holidays this year. But don’t stress over it. Just give yourself the gift of a new kitchen for next year, and start the process after the holidays, or sooner. THE PROCESS is complicated, and enough time should be allowed to properly think about and make decisions that you’ll have to live with for a long time. The kitchen is typically the single most expensive room to remodel in the home. All the more reason it deserves thoughtful planning. While the process is complicated, the solution is simple, CONSULT A PROFESSIONAL. Don’t try to do it yourself. You’ll save time and money by consulting a professional who can help you make the best decisions and avoid costly mistakes. Kitchen Designers who are certified by the National Kitchen & Bath Association have passed stringent exams and have proven experience in kitchen and bath design and installation. The creative designers at

Kitchen & Bath Concepts consider the NKBA’s guidelines for proper walkways, clearances, appliance placement, etc., for a functional, efficient kitchen that is beautiful as well. The mingling of your own ideas and preferences with the experienced knowledge of a professional Kitchen Designer will always generate the best results. Work with a professional who “gets” you and understands what you want and need, and then, let the fun begin. CABINETRY is critical. The cabinet styling and finish usually sets the style and palette for the entire kitchen. For the first time ever, Traditional styling is not the majority preference. Most people now say they prefer Transitional, while Contemporary is a growing preference. Cabinet lines are getting cleaner and less complicated, with minimum molding detail. Savvy consumers are selecting sleek slab door styles, or simple framed doors on frameless factory-manufactured cabinetry. Wood colors are getting lighter, and Oak is making a comeback. But it’s not your Mama’s grainy Golden Oak. This Oak is often rift-cut, and being used on slab or frame door styles, often in greyed hues. Easy-care textured wood-grain laminate and melamine are available that are difficult to tell from the real thing. Engineered exotic woods offer interesting and unusual colors and textures, and there are more glossy wood and paint finishes than previously. Sometimes glossy-finished cabinets are mixed with matte finishes. It’s more about personalization than ever before.

house& home | O c t o b e r 2 0 1 2 | h o u s e a n d h o m e o n l i n e . com

Cabinetry can take up a sizeable chunk of the budget—and it’s so worth it. Custom-factorymanufactured cabinetry will have a better, longer-lasting finish than anything that gets applied at the job site. Factory finishes are applied and baked on in a controlled environment—no dust or bugs in the air there, and no paint drips either. You’ll never have to refinish or repaint, and you’ll have many more choices of wood species, finishes, colors, drawer and cabinet construction options, storage accessories, etc. to select from. You can view true samples of quality-controlled finishes in a friendly showroom, and know that what you see is what you’ll get. Shelves are adjustable, doors and drawers will close smooth and quiet, and drawers will usually have full-extension guides as standard. There are different levels of quality—you should buy the best you can afford. You’ll be glad you did. Most people’s post-kitchen remodel regret is that they should have spent a little more and got what they really wanted. Some manufacturers of fine custom cabinetry, like Wood-Mode, even offer lifetime warranties. Peggy McGowen, ASID, CMKBD, RID, is founder of Kitchen & Bath Concepts, a design-driven firm specializing in kitchens and baths of unsurpassed quality for over 25 years. ANSWERS TO COMMON QUESTIONS: • How much does a new kitchen cost? More than they say on TV remodeling shows, where most labor and materials are donated. Remodeling Magazine’s annual “Cost vs. Value Survey” says that in 2011 in the Houston area, a minor kitchen remodel cost $20,321.00. A major midrange kitchen remodel was $54,064.00, and a major upscale kitchen remodel was $106,736.00.00. • How long does it take to remodel a kitchen? Much longer than it appears to on TV, where it really takes a lot longer than it appears. (One program featured a kitchen remodel begun for a couple who just learned she was expecting—she was about to deliver when they finished.) It usually takes three or four months, depending on size and scope of the project—it can be more, or less. • Where do I begin? Consult a Kitchen Professional to avoid mistakes, save time and money. Don’t compromise on good planning and design, or on hard-to-replace permanent components like cabinets, countertops and permanent plumbing.

Homeowner Lynn Sessions is no stranger to photo shoots for my column in Houston House & Home. First referred to me by Dollie Martinez of ICM Granite, HH&H featured Lynn’s kitchen in my column in the September 2008 issue “From Flood to Fantastic”, her guest bathroom in the December 2011 issue, “European Flair”, and her master bathroom in July 2012, “Suite Success”. On these pages, we now feature her guest bedroom. Lynn was stuck. “The guest bedroom had no character, no window treatments, old carpet and had no coordination with the colors in the rest of the house,” Lynn explained. To get the Old World, Tuscan look she was after, I suggested she use a restful blue as an accent color in the guest bedroom. She was a little worried about using blue, but I assured her that if the carpet, curtains and wall color flowed with the rest of the house the restful blue would work with the golds, deep purples and burgundies used in the rest of the house. Dolly recommended the contractor Lynn used, Dick Leiker at Wood-NStone (http://www.woodandstoneremodeling.com). He did the work on all the spaces, including the guest bedroom, and installed the textured carpet and painted the walls. “When we remodeled the kitchen it caused the rest of the house to look even more dated, so it was a domino effect. The entire house needed to be freshened up and modernized”, Lynn said. TIP: You can use a different color in your home as long as the flooring, curtains and wall color flows with other rooms in the house. AFTER: (Left) Installing custom-lined curtains and having the existing chair reupholstered provided light control, privacy and fabric coordination with the new bedding. BEFORE: Without lined window treatments, sleeping in was impossible and provided zero privacy. The side table was bare and needed accessories.

& after BEFORE

BEFORE: The absence of color on the walls, old carpet, oddly hung artwork, dark bedding and lack of accessories were spoiling this guest bedroom’s looks. AFTER: (Left) Painting the walls in SherwinWilliams “Croissant” and installing Shaw “Unique Beauty” carpet in “Silk” added great color and texture to the room. Pottery Barn Blythe Paisley Organic (mixed with custom) bedding added restful blues to the color scheme. An antique wood carving from Balinskas Imports and a framed wine label brought back from Paris add interest.

Lynn found some Pottery Barn bedding she loved and we used that as the jumping off point for all the colors in the room. Bringing along the shams and paint colors (Sherwin-Williams “Croissant” for walls and “Dover” for trim) Lynn met me at Interior Fabrics and we selected a darker neutral faux silk for the curtains that coordinated with the bedding, and a light blue textured upholstery fabric for reupholstering her existing chair and for the matching throw pillow on the bed. Her Old World design style dictated the oil-rubbed bronze color for the curtain hardware and brass lamp, which was painted with Modern Masters Metallic Paint Collection in ME525 “English Brown”. Since Interior Fabrics has the least expensive drapery hardware in town, we selected a Mahogany wood finish with simple ball finials and my drapery installer hung them for her.

AFTER: (Above) A vertical ladderback chair brought in from another room and the addition of a large-scaled trunk and basket from Target filled with guest towels and toiletries helped balance the large armoire. Michael’s framed the artwork from the owner’s travels to Greece and Bermuda, which added personality to the room, as did tabletop accessories brought in from the living room bookcases.

BEFORE: (Right) Minimal artwork, improperly sized accessories and spacing of furniture made the armoire feel boxy.

TIP: When hanging curtains, place the hemmed curtains on the rod and hold the rods high on the wall, mark the desired height of the rod with a pencil (I like the hems to “break” on the floor 1/2-inch), remove the panels and then install.

just ‘change the finishes’. I needed someone like you to make me think about and accomplish all the details to make a complete room, with sources on where to buy things and the precise size and color of matting for artwork. In this room we were able to use some wall decorations I had bought for other rooms and had never used and prints I had picked up on my travels to Greece and Bermuda”, she explained. “I just love the room and how unique it is,” Lynn explains. “ It looks wonderful and is so relaxing. I’ve had guests that say they want to take the bed home with them!”

Lynn loved my emailed homework assignments because they allowed her to work at her own pace with precise instructions of what needed to be done. She could also email me with questions she had along the way to clarify things. “I would not know what sources to use, like your drapery and upholstery workrooms — or where to get art framed (you even reminded me on the mat color and to use coupons at Michael’s) or purchased, like the imported Indonesian carved piece over the bed from Balinskas Imports,” she explained. “I have recommended your sources to many people. I really enjoyed working with you because with you, no question is a stupid question! You listened to all my ideas and told me if they were good, bad, or too expensive. You put my vision on paper and made it a reality. I could not have done this without you,” Lynn added. She recommends having a professional help, particularly if you are busy or don’t have much time due to job demands. “Even simple changes can make a world of difference in the feel of a room and can make it very stylish,” she explained. “I was a little surprised at how much work you said it would take to Joetta Moulden offers home makeovers using your own home furnishings to create the home you’ve always dreamed of. The Dream from the Sidewalk A tale of love, urban density and the nuances of a neighborhood BY SANDRA COOK PHOTOS BY YOONCHUL YOU, STUDIOMET ARCHITECTS

As renters, it’s often easier to live inside the city, close to professional pursuits and cultural pastimes. As a result, renters often fall in love with their neighborhood, only to have to leave it behind when they are ready to buy a home. Gavin and Laura Jones met while they were both renting in Midtown. It’s difficult to tell which came first, their love for each other or their love of their historic neighborhood. The couple frequently explored the oak-lined blocks on the western edge of Midtown as they walked their Yorkshire Terrier along the shaded streetscape. The magnificent oaks date back to the early 20th-century, when the area was first developed as one of Houston’s first residential neighborhoods. While the area is home to several large, mid-rise apartment properties built in recent decades, the serene ambiance beneath the tree branches and the humble scale of the old city blocks provides an instant connection to the century past. As Gavin and Laura took their neighborhood walks, they often admired a vacant lot next to a single family home and dreamed of one day building a house on the lot. “We love this neighborhood,” says Laura. “When we saw it was for sale we jumped on it right away. I don’t think anyone else had a chance to bid on it.” Laura and Gavin Jones selected StudioMET architects to design their home in historic Midtown. The couple, who met while living in apartments in the area, fell in love with the oak-lined streetscape. Design discussions among the homeowners and architects resulted in the eye-catching variety of colors and textures on the front exterior, including Hardie panels—in both white and purple—and corrugated metal.

MODERN SENSIBILITY

Gavin and Laura developed a mutual passion for modern architecture over the years. Gavin, who grew up in Australia, became fascinated with modern design from an early age. Together, Gavin and Laura frequently attended home tours, such as the AIA Houston Home Tour. They studied the spaces that appealed to them and noted architects’ work that spoke to their sensibilities. After they had procured the parcel of land they had pondered for years, they began their search for an architecture firm to design their first house. “We looked at the AIA award winners from the past 10 years, looked at their style and interviewed several firms,” says Gavin. “We wanted to be sure we liked the architects’ personality, because we knew we would be spending a lot of time with them,” says Laura. The couple selected Studio MET Architects, an award-winning design/build firm. “We tell clients it’s about the personal connection,” says Shawn Gottschalk, AIA. “It’s a very personal process to design a home for someone. That’s very exciting to us. It’s very different from a commercial job that doesn’t have that personal connection.” The firm oversaw both the design and the build-out. “We want to see our profession get back to the idea of the ‘Master Builder,’” says Gottschalk. Studio Met Architects met with Gavin and Laura about 12 times over three months to discuss and develop the design. Like many home design projects, the conversation started with a scrapbook of desired elements that were must haves. Laura and Gavin sought a modern home with a pleasing simplicity and built with durable, low-maintenance materials. “We wanted a house that was filled with light,” says Laura. “And we wanted a nice interaction with the garden space as well as a strong presence from the street,” says Gavin. “Australia is a very young country, without a lot of architectural history, so Modern architecture has been widely embraced there for many, many years,” says Gavin. “The design of our house was not intended to shock or make big statement, but Modern architecture is still a bit unusual here, especially in the southern United States.” URBAN SCENE

“The context is unique with almost all of the surrounding properties being multi-story apartment complexes,” says Stephen Andrews. Those properties proved to be a driving force behind the entire design, specifically the layout, form and window placement. “It is important to have mixed density within the urban context and a single family residence adds to the overall composition of the urban fabric — it creates vitality and visual interest,” says Shawn Gottschalk. “It was very important for the home to respond to the streetscape and the pedestrian. We wanted to create a home that contributed to the overall idea of the community.” StudioMET steered the design and build-out of the home, with the pool always a part of the overall vision. After their home was completed, Laura and Gavin employed Downunda Aquatic Environments to design and construct the pool to complement the look of the house.

This was essential given that Laura and Gavin are active participants in that street scene and not just for doggie outings. “We are big walkers. We love to walk to the shops and restaurants in this area.” When asked about the purple accent on the front exterior, Gavin laughs, saying “the purple is about faith in my wife and faith in my builder.” As the idea to include a colorful contrast on the front of the home developed, Laura pushed for purple. “Gavin had suggested red, but I thought it was too manly,” says Laura. “I explained that our home should look like a couple’s house.” To achieve the deeply-hued purple, the firm encouraged the Joneses to use painted Hardie panels, set off with metal trim. “We are always experimenting and developing unique details that utilize everyday, cost-effective materials in a creative way,” says Gottschalk. “In doing this we are able to transform the material into something that is fresh and new. For this project we utilized a fiber cement board and a custom galvanized reveal to create different compositions and texture.” Another reason the front of the home draws the eye is the unusual lot is not quite a rectangular. The property features one long side that kicks out at an angle, making the front of the lot wider than the back, so the sight lines provide the effect of a perspective drawing. This allowed for the deck on top of garage, which connects to the guest suite, to be especially generous, stretching wide to address the oak-lined street below. “Stephen did a great job on the deck, integrating with the trees,” says Gavin of Andrews’ design. “It feels like a tree house up there,” says Gottschalk. The effect also imparts a welcoming openness to the front entry.

The galley kitchen allows guests to perch at the bar and observe their hosts in action. The glasstiled backsplash and Silestone countertops help highlight the functional beauty of the space. Appliances include a Sharp sliding drawer microwave, two wood-paneled Thermador dishwashers and a 36-inch Professional Series Thermador range. Light fixtures were sourced from Lighting Unlimited.

31

ABOVE: The deck, finished with Ipe wood from Brazil, was placed atop the garage and offers a bird’s eye view of the street below. RIGHT: The pleasing pool view can be enjoyed from the entire first floor and much of the second. In the living area, the pair of white leather custom sofas from Cantoni feature stitching that matches the wall color, Sherwin Williams Gray Flannel. The glass-and-steel LC10 coffee table is Le Corbusier’s 1928 design. The painting is a by a Brazillian artist.

PRODUCTIVE PARTNERSHIP

“We collaborate very closely with our clients as well as within the office,” says Andrews. “We are unique in that we are a small boutique firm, but we have three licensed architects that work closely together on each project. Most small firms have one or maybe two architects, and even large firms might only have one architect assigned to each project as the project manager with other support staff around him/her.” “We spend a lot of time on the schematic design listening to our clients, establishing what their priorities are, and what they value,” says Gottschalk. “Our work is not about a specific style. We strongly believe in an architecture of authenticity. Simply said, we approach each project with a unique perspective that is directed by the program, budget, and site. Our work is about our clients and it reflects who they are and how they want to live.” Gavin reports that the initial design plan was very close to the finished project and very little changed during the construction phase. He also pleased that Studio MET ran the build-out.

32

“There was a comfort level knowing that same people were responsible for building our house,” says Gavin. “We feel very blessed to be able to go through this process – every day we are thankful. And we felt comfortable here as soon as we moved in, because we were very familiar with the spaces after both design and construction phases.” The success of the daylighting is a delight for Laura. “I love that no lamps need to be on during day. Laura, who did the landscaping for their home also relishes their personal green space. “It’s our first back yard,” she smiles. “Residential design is a very intimate process,” says Gottschalk. “It is very important to find the right firm to collaborate with. At the end of the day, this is what contributes to the overall success of a project. There has to be a good dynamic among everyone. For us, our work is not just about another business transaction. We are very passionate about what we do and take the time to get to know our clients and the way they live their lives, or the way they want to live their lives. To be honest, we typically become very good friends with our clients and this often leads to repeat projects with them.”

This month’s cooler weather beckons green thumbs (and green thumb wannabes) back to the garden. With the summer heat’s retreat, we find ourselves lingering alongside our beds and containers pondering ways to spruce them up for the milder temperatures. Garden experts and nursery staff are quick to point out that fall is the time to plant many varieties of plants—from grass to trees to shrubs to perennials—so they can become well-established before summer weather rolls around. GRASS ROOTS EFFORT

Fall is the time to replace dead St. Augustine with new sod—otherwise you can expect weeds to move into those holes in your lawn. Planting new sod in October gives the grass a full six months to build a strong root system before summer returns. New sod has very little to no roots, so it is very important to lay new sod directly onto exposed soil. Be sure to strip away dead grass and weeds. A sod cutter, whether manual or gas-powered, is a handy tool for removing dead grass and weeds, because it leaves a level surface of exposed soil. After laying the new sod, watering is crucial. New sod must be watered daily for 30 days to ensure the roots will develop.

project The fall is also a key time to fertilize your lawn, also known as winterizing. Applying an organic, slow release fertilizer helps grass prepare for its dormant phase during the winter months and will fortify it for its spring startup. COLOR BOOST

Your garden may be lacking color after summer’s end. Plant longlasting cool-weather annuals, such as pansies, dianthus, snapdragons and alyssum for a floral flourish here and there. Foliage can bring color, too. Ornamental kale and cabbage, dusty miller, can add shades of purple, white, and silver green to beds and containers. LEFT: Snapdragons provide pretty blooms from fall to spring with little upkeep.

project COOL SEASON HERBS

If you’re not ready to commit to planting vegetable crops, herbs are an easier edible plants effort for those who have less time and less experience. It’s important to note that there are cool season and warm season herbs. Popular cool season herbs for our area include dill, fennel, parsley, cilantro, rosemary, nasturtium and thyme. To many gardeners’ dismay, cilantro dies out it late spring and will not survive in the summer. Rosemary, however, is a resilient, low-water-use herb that thrives year-round in our climate. Simply purchase four-inch pots of herbs from a local nursery and replant in quality soil either in raised beds or containers. Water frequently and snip often to add flavor to dishes and drinks and maintain a healthy growth habit. LEFT: Rosemary and dill are fragrant, flavorful, easy-to-grow herbs for our area.

project PLANT YOUR VEGGIES

While temperatures may dip below 32 degrees over the winter months, vegetable gardens produce yearround in our climate. Although having frost cloth on hand to protect plants from a sustained hard freeze is key. Many of the best tasting and most nutritious vegetables are cool season crops. Some relatively easy (and therefore popular) vegetables to grow in the Houston area include carrots, collards, lettuce, onions, pumpkin, radish and turnips. CITRUS SEASON

There are a number of cold hardy Satsumas, Mandarins, oranges, kumquats, lemons and grapefruit that can be grown in Houston. Depending on varieties planted, you can harvest citrus from October through February. Check out Urban Harvest’s January fruit tree sale offers a wide variety of citrus suitable for growing in Houston.

LEFT: Onions are easy to grow, but require ample watering for bulb formation.

project MULCH IS A MUST

You may have mulched last spring or summer, but that protective layer has long since withered away. A fresh layer of mulch safeguards roots and helps retain moisture while discouraging weeds. Apply a 3-inch layer of mulch — use pine straw, bark mulch, compost or leaves — to beds, large pots and trees. LOCAL EXPERTISE

To learn more about effective gardening strategies for our area, consider joining Urban Harvest, a local community gardening and orchard program. Urban Harvest publishes a quarterly newsletter that includes a month-by-month planting calendar. Urban Harvest’s former executive director Bob Randall has written what most consider the definitive book on fruit and vegetable gardening for our area, Year Round Vegetables, Fruits, and Flowers for Metro Houston. In addition, Urban Harvest volunteers maintain a seed library that stocks seeds known to have great flavor and good performance in our area. Information: www.urbanharvest.org or 713.880.5540.

Meyer Lemon is well-suited for the Houston climate and can produce a bounty of fruit once established.
