Temperatures drop to “pleasant,” and cool decorating-remodelingbuilding ideas typically greet – and inspire – us when “neighbors” around town open their doors for public home tours. We’ve got the Bellaire New Home Showcase on our calendars for two weekends: October 19 & 20, and October 26 & 27. The Eastwood Civic Association hosts its neighborhood tour on October 19 & 20. The AIA (American Institute of Architects) Home Tour is October 26 & 27. And, finally, take note of the Solar Tour, which includes a few homes, on October 19. Our August cover gave you a sneak peak into the kitchen of one of Bellaire’s tour houses, built by Cason Graye Homes. And in this issue, we’re taking you on a tour of a new construction that marries The Houston Heights’ 1930s craftsman style with a homeowner’s penchant for contemporary design. It will be on the AIA tour, but you can see much of it here on page 46. Robert Lyke , owner of the AIA tour house, shared a fun idea that he’s incorporated into all of his baths. It’s a $100 sliding door stor-

October is Kitchen & Bath Month By Peggy McGowen, ASID, CMKBD, RID • Kitchen & Bath Concepts
O
ctober is an awesome month in Houston. The weather cools down, and the social scene heats up. Thoughts turn to the upcoming holi days, and entertaining friends and family in… the kitchen. Everyone knows that good food, fun and fond memories are made in… the kitchen. Some are probably thinking about… their own kitchen, and how badly it needs to be remodeled. It’s probably too late to plan, design, order and complete a major kitchen remodel before the holidays this year. But don’t stress over it. Just give yourself the gift of a new kitchen for next year, and start the design process now. THE PROCESS IS COMPLICATED. Enough time should be allowed to think about and make decisions that you will live with for a long time. The kitchen is typically the single most expensive room to remodel in a home. All the more reason it deserves thoughtful planning. While the process is complicated, the solution is simple:
CONSULT A PROFESSIONAL. Don’t try to do it yourself. Save time and money by consulting a professional who can help you make the best decisions and avoid costly mistakes. Some kitchen professionals are certified by the National Kitchen & Bath Association, have passed stringent exams and have proven experience in kitchen and bath design and installation. The creative designers at Kitchen & Bath Concepts are mindful of proper walkways, clearances, appliance placement, etc., for a kitchen that is functional and efficient, and beautiful as well. Construction professionals may be certified by the National Home Builders Association, and earn accreditation as 10 house& home | October 2013 | www.houseandhomeonline. com
Certified Master Builder or Certified Graduate Remodeler. LBJ Construction exemplifies professionalism in construction. The mingling of your own ideas and preferences with the experienced knowledge of professionals will always generate the best results. Work with a professional who “gets” you and understands what you want and need, and then, let the fun begin. CABINETRY IS CRITICAL. The cabinet styling and finish usually sets the style and palette for the entire kitchen and adjacent spaces. For the first time ever, Traditional styling is not the majority preference. Most people now say they prefer Transitional, and Contemporary is a growing preference. Cabinet lines are getting cleaner and less complicated, with minimum molding detail. Savvy consumers are selecting sleek slab door styles, or simple framed doors on frameless factory-manufactured cabinetry. Wood colors are getting lighter, and Oak is making a comeback. But it’s not your Mama’s grainy Golden Oak on a raised panel door. This Oak is often rift-cut or rustic textured, and being used on slab or frame door styles, often in greyed hues. Engineered exotic woods offer interesting and unusual colors and textures, and there are more glossy wood and paint finishes than previously. Sometimes glossy-finished cabinets are mixed with matte finishes. It’s more about personalization than ever before. Cabinetry can take up a sizeable chunk of the budget – and it’s so worth it. Custom cabinets that are factory-manufactured, like Brookhaven by WoodMode, will have better, longer-lasting finishes than anything applied at the job site or shop. Factory finishes are applied and baked on in a controlled
ANSWERS TO COMMON QUESTIONS: How much does a new kitchen cost? More than they say on Reality TV, (where most labor and materials are donated.) According to the Remodeling Magazine 2013 Cost vs. Value Report (www.costvsvalue.com), in the Houston area, a major midrange kitchen remodel was $50,376.00, and a major upscale kitchen remodel was $102,420.00.00. How long does it take to remodel a kitchen? Much Longer than it appears on Reality TV. A typical kitchen remodel takes at least two to four months, depending on size and scope of the project – it can be less, or more. How do I begin? Consult a Kitchen Professional. Avoid mistakes – Save time and money. Don’t compromise on good planning and design, or on quality components that are permanent and hard-to-replace, like cabinets, countertops, and plumbing.
Contemporary Wood-Mode kitchen features high-gloss finish on rift-cut oak. Glass tiles and custom glass door inserts.
environment – no dust or bugs in the air there, and no paint drips either. You’ll never have to refinish or repaint, and you’ll have many more choices of wood species, finishes, colors, drawer and cabinet construction options, storage accessories, etc. to select from. You’ll see true samples of quality-controlled finishes in a friendly showroom, and know that what you see is what you’ll get. Shelves are adjustable, doors and drawers will close smooth and quiet, and drawers should have full-extension guides as standard. There are different levels of quality – you should buy the best you can afford. You’ll be glad you did. Most people’s post-kitchen remodel regret is that they should have spent a little more to get what they really wanted. Some manufacturers of fine custom cabinetry, like Wood-Mode, even offer lifetime warranties.

TASTEMAKER
The green and yellow hutch that sits in the couple’s Heights kitchen was built from reclaimed pieces found in New Orleans.
Merri Pruitt and Jimmy Littleton moved to Houston in September 2005, after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans. Their New Orleans home and studio, a 1905 raised cottage, endured 6 feet of floodwater and, as a result, became uninhabitable. They eventually moved in with Merri’s brother who lived in Kemah. He not only offered them a safe haven but his garage as well, which is where their decorative arts business began again. The couple now lives in a Heights bungalow that has a separate art studio where they work.
Painted Furniture & Floors An interview with Merri and Jimmy
How and where did your business originally begin? I started my decorative painting business in the late ‘70s in New Orleans, where I was doing a lot of decorative painting in various buildings on St Charles Avenue (such as the Columns Hotel), in addition to the French Quarter and Garden District. I had received accolades on many projects, including the restoration of the Japanese Room at Antoine’s Restaurant in the early 80s. But that all came after my first job, which was stenciling the walls of an antique shop on Magazine St. I met Jimmy, a neighbor and artist, who had recently left his graphic arts job at the Times Picayune newspaper, in the mid ‘80s . . . and instantly hired him. Thus the collaboration in life and work began. 16 house& home | October 2013 | www.houseandhomeonline. com
Do you work with the public, and what services do you provide? We work with clients – both individuals and decorators – to create one-of-a-kind painted accent pieces. Usually the customer has a piece they want lighted up, or an older or inherited piece that needs a fresh look. Trending now is the reclaimed look of vintage pieces painted and given a totally new look and life with layers of chippy paint. We also work with a furniture maker to fill a particular spot, such as mirrors, consoles, bath vanities, floor cloths and screens. Do you sell directly to the public? We have repainted antiques and vintage pieces, mirrors and artwork, as well as accessories and lamps in our space at Village Antiques (1200 Blalock Rd).

What kind of work do you favor? We like painting the furniture, because of the amount of detail involved. As for painted floors, the customer is usually in a hurry to get the project done, and we are working within someone else’s time constraints. What type of furniture works best – for specialty painting? Wood is best, but has to be free of any wax. How elaborate can you get? Both can be as detailed as the customer's budget allows -- just look at the intricate floors in the Russian palaces! What is the process and trends? The painted floors have to be top coated with a clear coat every 5 years or so. And with the furniture, the distressed pieces seem to get better with age. A popular finish is the French Greige, also known as "the Swedish look." Warmed-up silver on mirrors is trending too.

You also listened and didn’t push too hard,” says Pat. She felt the paint sample boards I suggested she complete made a big difference in confidently visualizing the colors. Pat interviewed all the contractors I gave her and in the end. She went with Capmire Projects because she checked them out on Angie’s List. Not only were they highly rated, but she felt they were well-suited for her project. Pat was particularly high on the carpenter. The ceiling fan was replaced with a brushed nickel model, and the TV was hung on the wall. The new round rug came from Tuesday Morning, and we spray-painted old chairs black that she already owned. New pillows from Ballard Designs catalog were added.
•SOMETIMES THE MOST EFFECTIVE STRATEGY is to first rethink what’s already paid for.
BEFORE: Dark, untrimmed paneling, a brass ceiling fan, an awkward TV stand, and a too- large rug along with mismatched chairs spoiled the breakfast room.
Pat liked the paints I chose, saying they were “room changing.” She also liked the new pantry’s pull out drawers and my suggestion to put the spare water bottles inside. “After making a mess on my own and so many costly mistakes – and thinking about your ideas for a long time, I decided to take the leap. I am glad that I did. The satisfaction of a beautiful kitchen is priceless,” Pat explains. Her friends and family comment about its success all the time and say the rooms make the whole house look better. She added it is important to find someone who listens to you and who guides but does not push. “That way you end up with a project that is ‘you’ and not ‘her,’ ” she says. Pat says building out the paneling and painting even the ceiling the green color was a hard suggestion to visualize. “I just had to trust you,” she says with a laugh. “It far exceeded my expectations and that of my family. Sitting around the island is our new happy place to be.”

AHHHHTOBER!
Perfect Time for Fall Gardening in Houston Area Whether you are a new gardener with a new house and yard, or have been around the block a time or two and have established plants, you probably have been looking forward to October. There isn’t a better time of the year to plant. And there are so many options from sowing Texas Bluebonnets to replacing your summer herbs with fall ones like fennel and garlic chives to more ambitious shrub and tree planting. And don’t forget about tulips and daffodils … those delightful spring bulbs need to be planted in OctoberNovember, as well as showy amaryllis.
Here’s a checklist to keep you on track: From the ground up: Fall is generally the best time to put down sod, seed grass and add mulch to your flowerbeds. Warm days and cool nights with regular rainfall (sometimes still supplemented by a sprinkler system) make for ideal growing conditions. The three most essential soil elements are nitrogen (producing the healthy deep green color); phosphorus (stimulates root and flower formation), and potassium (strengthens plants and helps resist diseases). Start a compost pile with your fall clippings and rakings. Trees: Only a few trees in Houston respond to the change from summer to fall, so if you like colorful foliage plant red maples (Japanese types and Shantung are good choices), red 28 house& home | October 2013 | www.houseandhomeonline. com
oak, Chinese tallow and sweetgum. Nursery-grown native trees are preferable for transplanting and stand a better chance of survival: redbud, holly, and yaupon are good choices. Fall is the best season to plant container-grown fruit trees, and young trees should be staked to prevent roots from being pulled out by fall and winter winds. Thanks to our mild winters and moderate soil temperatures, the roots of trees and shrubs planted in the fall continue to grow all winter long – even though the top of the plant is dormant. So when spring arrives, the roots are established and your plants will actively grow. What’s the backbone of your garden? Shrubs. A treeformed ligustrum hedge is stunning. Nandina (Chinese heavenly bamboo) is feathery and effective in groups. The fastgrowing lorapetalum (Chinese fringe flower) will effectively hide your fence and change out its Aggie maroon leaves for shocking pink fringe just when you least expect it. For your tropical garden, consider lush, easy to grow variegated ginger (Alpinea), rice paper plants and philodendrun selloum. A hardy evergreen shrub is the shiny-leaf Cleyera japonica with new growth in red and bronze. Roses and azaleas are popular flowering shrubs in Houston. For Instant Color: Fall-flowering perennials for your flowerbeds include Katy ruellia, gerbera, African and shasta

daisy, chrysanthemums, shrimp plant, phlox, verbena, lantana, and plumbago with its soft blue blooms. Firebush (Hamelia Patens) attracts hummingbirds. Also, enjoy October flowering butterfly and canna lily, hibiscus and impatiens. Plant rhudbeckia and coreopsis for pops of oranges and yellows. Wait until November to plant pansies. Seeds: If you have plenty of patience, you’ll save money by planting seeds that may now be sown in flats or open ground in October. Popular flower favorites from seed include sweet alyssum, babysbreath, hollyhock, snapdragon and sweet William. Herbs, which may now be sown in open ground, include cilantro, parsley, oregano, rosemary, sage and thyme. Vegetables to plant in October include the full spectrum of leafy vegetables: kale, lettuce, brussells sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. Water after you sow and weed as often as necessary so they won’t smother your new seedlings. For a head start, you can get veggie transplants from your local nursery. Don’t forget all the different native irises which can be planted (or maybe yours need to be divided) this month and next. They will repay you with blooms in the early spring. And when in doubt, hire a landscape designer. Scheduling isn’t as tight in the fall so you can get their attention even if your project is small.
The best time to plant spring bulbs is when the soil temperature is below 60 degrees. Give the bulbs their required cold treatment by placing them in the refrigerator for 8 to 10 weeks in the fall. (Photo courtesy of Fotolia).

ON THE FRONT BURNER Stoves & Ranges: What’s to Want
Lacanche Saulieu.
With the holiday season upon us, cookbook pages are being turned and menus get very detailed. For some, the focus also turns to weighing the overall efficiency and looks of our kitchens. And, as it turns out, it might be a good time to do just that. As dealers move out inventory this fall to welcome in new appliances, consumers in the process may find some very tantalizing prices on stoves and ranges. On the high-end, consumers seem to gravitate toward sleek European designs; ranges focusing on timed cooking efficiencies; and appliances allowing simultaneous broiling, steaming, warming, roasting, baking and stove-top cooking. Color certainly makes a breakthrough these days, with AGA Marvel range cookers available in duck egg blue, pistachio, aubergine and British racing green, to mention a few. The French custom-built range, Lacanche, offers such eye-catching hues as mandarine, provence yellow and deflt blue. Regardless of the growing options among stove manufacturers to interject color into the kitchen, “stainless is still the popular color for all cooking products,” says

Charles McHenry at Acceptance Appliance, which sells mostly GE products. “Customers almost always prefer gas over electric, too.” McHenry points to two stand-out trends: “The top-selling features on freestanding ranges are the five-surface burners with griddle -- and the double ovens with convection bake and a roasting option in the lower oven.” New features concentrate on making life easier at home, according to McHenry. The true European convection system with direct air operating at different speeds aims to provide more even cooking and faster results. Notification lighting gives you the cooking status of your meal with just a quick glance. Wireless control of your oven via a smart phone app eliminates worry, for example, about turning off the oven when engaged in other projects. And smooth glass-touch controls make cleanup easy. Joe Gonzales at BSH Home Appliances says his customers are looking for appliances that “can fulfill their every cooking need all in one appliance – whether it is baking, broiling, steaming, grilling, sautéing or warming. An example of a product that provides it all is the Thermador Pro Grand Steam Range that also features six Star burners. Star burners focus on providing even flame and heat distribution. Over at AGA Marvel, the oven is so much of a “true show-stopper” that the BBC (British Broadcast Corporation) deemed it as one of the top design icons of the century, according to Leah Clark, brand manager for AGA Marvel. “Designers, architects and homeowners alike are smitten with its good looks and 12 striking enamel colors.” Good looks aside, the British-made AGA may be the first to concentrate on efficiency. A Swedish Nobel Prize winner in Physics observed back in the 18th century how much time his wife spent cooking. He set out to invent an oven that would save her time. Today’s AGA features separate ovens, which operate independently of one another. Each has a specific “job:” to bake (365 degrees), simmer (212 degrees), roast (465 degrees). The company also offers ovens geared to slow cooking as well as steam. “The AGA can be programmed to be ready to cook on the schedule you demand,” says Clark. “The secret to the AGA is its cast-iron construction. “It’s definitely suited to the fast-past lifestyles of the U.S. consumer. The ‘Total Control’ features the same gentle radiant heat cast iron construction that makes it a better cooking appliance.” Hot plates sit atop the stove. Both the boiling plate (626 degrees) and simmering plate (392 degrees) are a generous 14 1/2 inches wide, which means they can accommodate extra large pans and multiple sauce pans. Owners are able to prepare up to six dishes at one time.

The German-made Bosch also has its own recipe for efficiency. It offers nine different cooking modes, and the Autochef cooking sensor on its 800-series induction and electric cooktops take the guesswork out of preparing favorite recipes, according to company spokespeople. AutoChef ’s innovative sensor measures the temperature from the bottom of the pan and applies only the perfect amount of energy to the element in order to deliver precise cooking results “every time and without waste of energy.” The cooktop heats to the desired temperature and makes an audible sound when it is time to place the food in the pan. Induction cooking is said to be 30 percent more efficient than traditional cooking. The heat is actually generated in the cooking vessel as opposed to the stovetop. It is been around a while but becoming more desired. Viking, Samsung, GE and Kenmore also offer this cooking appliance type. Each French-made Lacanche is first customized and then hand-crafted in the heart of Burgundy, where employees are said to build them with the idea that they will become a heirloom piece for future generations to enjoy. The ranges have implemented features for the U.S. market, specifically the addition of safety thermacouples, reinforced racking systems, soft-close drawers and an oven light, according to Victoria Lane, spokesperson for Lacanche’s American distributor, Art Culinaire. Lane admits the Lacanche oven may be smaller, but it offers advantages. “Yes, they are smaller than the typical American oven, but their size actually make them more efficient. Less wasted space in the oven cavity results in more concentrated flavors. “While smaller, Lacanche ovens can still hold a 26-pound turkey,” she adds. Lacanche offers two new 36-inch models in the American marketplace; the Beaune and the Bussy. “Also, we are hoping next spring to be able to offer a couple new burner options for our market: induction cooking for a pair, the multi-cooker that can be used as a steam cooker, a waterbath for cooking pasta or boiling vegetables or as a bainmarie.” She says they also plan to launch this fall three new colors: a Tiffany blue, a creamy mint and a soft light pink.

Interior Designer Carla Aston helped the owners of this “new” bath obtain an elegant look at $20K less than what a total redo would have cost.
Clean, Light – and Interesting WOODLANDS BATH GETS A FACELIFT B Y S U S A N F O X 38 house& home | October 2013 | www.houseandhomeonline. com
If the Johnsons had gutted their 1990s master bathroom and began again – changing out everything – the estimated price tag would have been $50k or more. But they decided to take a different, cost-saving route instead. Christine Johnson’s first stop was to hire an interior designer who could adeptly steer the project toward what they desired and maintain a workable budget, too. Carla Aston eagerly stepped in to transform the couple’s dated “builder’s spec” bath into one with shimmer, shine and sparkle. “When I met with Carla, she laid out three options that we could take with the bathroom in terms of scope and expense. We chose the middle one,” says Christine Johnson.

In the beginning, Rob and Christine Johnson thought they would just do a few updates -- change out counter tops, sinks and faucets. But, then, they decided, “If we are going to do the project, we want to do it right.” A timely get-away also inspired the Johnsons who upon their return home began to think about the function and look of their bathroom a bit more. “We had been on vacation, and my husband loved the rain shower that we had at the hotel. So we decided to do something similar in our own shower,” says Christine Johnson. She says that once they settled on a plan of action, their budget never really changed. “We had no unforeseen additions or changes.” Everything stayed in its original placement. For instance, the cabinetry remained but received new facings to help update the overall look. The frameless mirror was replaced with a larger one that is framed in wood. Two light fixtures, flanking the sink, were installed directly into the mirror to add design interest. Aston says the old countertops were removed and replaced with Crème Marfil marble. The original fiberglass tub and ho-hum tile surround were removed and replaced with an antique-inspired footed tub that sits solo against a new contemporary mosaic tiled wall. It also provides a pretty focal point for the room. 40 house& home | October 2013 | www.houseandhomeonline. com

Aston suggested using the same mosaic tile behind the tub for a stunning welcoming floor centerpiece. A time-consuming process, the middle portion of the ceramic floor was removed to accomplish the desired effect. By keeping much of the original flooring in place, the budget persevered. The old wallpaper was removed and replaced with a design by Stroheim. According to Aston, they stayed with neutrals to ensure a fresh light and bright look. However, Aston did want to interject subtle color somewhere. So, she chose to add it on the barrel-vaulted ceiling. Transformations by Phyllis applied an iridescent, mottled teal blue to heighten interest in the space. The Johnsons credit Aston for helping them avoid possibly expensive mistakes. “I like the way that Carla works, charging a flat fee for a project and then if you want additional time with her, it is by the hour. I could never have picked the things she did and put them together so well,” says Christine Johnson.

A Wink to the Past
AIA Home Tour House “Plays Nice in Old Neighborhood” BY MARSHA CANRIGHT • PHOTOS BY BEN HILL 46 house& home | October 2013 | www.houseandhomeonline. com

LEFT: A featured house on AIA’s Houston Home Tour, 1648 Columbia is a contemporary home that “plays nice with the neighbors.” The traditional façade is interpreted in a modern way using contemporary materials. For example, the traditional balustrade and porch railings are not wood but metal. S
ituated on a wide street in the heart of the Heights historic district, the two-story peaked-roofed house at 1648 Columbia has the sensibility and the proportions of its craftsmen-style neighbors with a subtle, contemporary twist. 47
ABOVE: The roofline and symmetrical windows fit neatly onto the streetscape but the exterior is realized in stone, metal siding, and horizontal planking. The door and transom windows are contemporary. The covered terrace is visible in the back left. The philosophy: Take the standard convention and turn it on its head but with subtlety. LEFT: Architect Greg Swedberg inserted for interest and continuity the brick used on the house into the front cedarblock wall.
It was built last year and yet, it is a seamless fit with adjacent structures that date from the 1920s. It’s a true balance, a yin and yang, “a house of dualities,” says architect Greg Swedberg. He worked for a full year in close collaboration with owner Robert Lyke to realize the vision and design of a house that defies categories. The 26-foot-wide traditional facade with its A-frame and tapered columns belies a house of 3,500 square feet that grows more contemporary from front to rear. The structure is a long L-shape with a 76-foot side yard. The defining feature of the home is its true indoor-outdoor connectivity. “I came from California 20 years ago,” says Lyke. “There, we lived outside. I came to Houston and moved indoors.” To reclaim the outdoors, the house has two wall-sized sliding glass panels (11x14 feet) that stretch across the north side of the interior living area and open onto a long, walled courtyard with a 50-foot lap pool and a fire pit. 48 house& home | October 2013 | www.houseandhomeonline. com

The courtyard is anchored in the rear by a summer kitchen, a covered dining area and above, an inviting second floor terrace. That space is essentially one large room encompassing a seating area, an open kitchen, a wet bar, and a built-in café booth. A wood and metal staircase tucked opposite the wet bar in a wood-framed alcove rises to the second floor and opens onto a wide hallway. The area provides access to the bedrooms and serves as a gallery space for the owner’s abstract acrylic paintings. 54 house& home | October 2013 | www.houseandhomeonline. com

The interior wall is painted in shades of gray providing a neutral background for the rich colors in the paintings. Lyke, who works for Chevron Oil and Energy, began attending art classes at Glassell School of Art and the Art League of Houston in 2000. Since that time his work has been shown in several Houston exhibitions. The second floor houses the master bedroom, master bath, two additional bedrooms, a roof terrace overlooking the pool, and a spacious art studio with a vaulted ceiling and windows on three sides. The master bedroom’s adjacent bathroom has a built-in closet and a laundry room. The rear bedroom opens onto a covered sleeping porch and terrace. The back stairway is an open steel frame with concrete treads and a metal handrail that wraps down to the courtyard and the two-car garage.

A hall gallery displays the paintings of owner Robert Lyke. A bright blue balustrade reinforces the traditional style with a vivid contemporary twist. The railing is made of horizontal wire.
When designing the house, ADA (American Disabilities Act) compliancy was another priority. Because Robert and his partner, Doug Killinger, plan to retire here and age in place, they made certain that everything is accessible. There is also a place for an elevator to be installed if one is needed. 58 house& home | October 2013 | www.houseandhomeonline. com
Across a breezeway from the main house is the final jewel: A private hair salon called simply “Douglas.” A veteran stylist with 20 years’ experience, Killinger is already popular in the neighborhood. “We love the house. We love the neighborhood,” Lyke says. “To be honest, it’s wonderful.”

HOMES AROUND HOUSTON
Open Their Doors This Month It’s that time of the year when some Houston neighbors open their doors to the public, sharing their remodeling, building and architectural ideas in addition to proudly introducing their neighborhoods.
Bellaire The Bellaire Fall New Home Showcase later this month features six recently constructed homes in a city within Houston. In fact, Bellaire is known as the “City of Homes” – meaning mostly residential sites encompass its 3.6 square miles of land. The community is located in the southwest area of Harris County. Roy and Karen Gabby founded RG Homes, which built the 5,300-square-foot French transitional tour house at 4535 Evergreen. As visitors enter the house through massive double doors, a lovely curved stairwell and phenomenal domed ceiling captures the eye. Fine attention to detail is evident throughout.
4535 Evergreen
5223 Maple
Savannah Home Builders invite the public to view two houses on tour. Nestled on a private street, the 4,500-square-foot house at 4610 Pin Oak Lane is a spectacular custom home designed to marry timeless beauty with Old World Mediterranean flair. Hand-cut bricks were selected to complement native Texas limestone for a classic look. The second at 5223 Maple is a Northern French inspiration. It boasts beautiful ceilings of vaulted, barreled, groined and arched varieties.
4610 Pin Oak
4706 Maple
Right in the heart of Bellaire at 4706 Maple is a 4,000-squarefoot new construction by Lovett Homes. It shows a number of elegant finishes, including mountain white marble, walnut wood flooring, Bouvet hardware, Brookhaven cabinetry and more. Award-winning Architect Robert Samen’s work is revealed at 5319 Aspen. It is a soft Mediterranean-style 5,100-square-foot house that features an outdoor kitchen and covered lanai, hickory flooring, a barreled ceiling and a wine closet. The 3,800-square-foot Spanish-style home at 5542 Aspen, built by Bryan Phillips, owner of Cason Graye Homes sits on an over-sized lot. Upon entering, a custom curved staircase with hand-painted tile risers sets the tone. The kitchen boasts a highend Thermador appliance package, and a large picture window looks out at the pool.

Eastwood Seven homes and an old grocery story (circa 1922) undergoing renovation to become a food co-op are on this year’s tour from noon until 5 p.m. on October 19&20. Featured house styles include a Foursquare, Craftsman, Prairie and Bungalow. The Eastwood Civic Association sponsors the 17th annual home tour. Eastwood, located a mile from downtown, is one of Houston’s first master-planned communities, established in 1913. The now-defunct Houston Daily Post called it a “model suburb.” Tickets can be purchased online (www.eastwoodcivicassociation.org) or at Bohemo’s at 708 Telephone Rd.

More than 250,000 Houstonians do it twice a month. They recycle plastics, glass and paper, keeping more than 30,000 tons of materials out of the city’s limited landfills. “We are hoping to convert everyone (in Houston) to recycling over the next three or four years,” said Gary Readore, chief of staff with the city Solid Waste Department. City residents recycle three ways: 18-gallon green bins filled and placed at their curbs, large 96-gallon rollaway carts which are emptied weekly with trash pickup and neighborhood recycling centers. Each method accepts all aluminum and metal cans, plastics (marked with recycle symbol), newspapers, catalogs, magazines and miscellaneous paper products as well as most corrugated cardboard. Glass – including jars, bottles from beer or wine – can be taken to the neighborhood centers or placed in the carts (but not accepted in the smaller curbside bins). Recycling is the perfect place to get rid of all those old phone books, too, Readore said. And to be really environmentally aware, residents can recycle the green stuff, too—
yard and lawn trimmings, leaves and branches. These items must be packaged in special biodegradable bags and left curbside for pickup. Styrofoam can also be recycled, but those articles must be brought to the Westpark Center (5900 Westpark Dr.), where hazardous wastes, paints and toxic household cleaners can be dropped off. The city operates eight other neighborhood recycling centers. Readore said many people place pizza boxes in the carts and bins, but because food residue and oils have contaminated the cardboard, the boxes are rejected. The city adopted a program to recycle building and construction materials (wood, brick, tile or roofing) and gives them to non-profit organizations free of charge. Recycling in Houston has three added bonuses: Residents get loyalty points for the amount of recycled goods they contribute. These points can be traded in for food, entertainment or services. A second bonus is the city gets to sell the recycled materials, adding about $1 milllion to its operating budget. And the best benefit: We all get to live in a cleaner, more environmentally aware city.
For more information call #311 or check it out online at http://www.houstontx.gov/solidwaste/recycling.html

THE HORT WHISPERER
Chilopsis linearis
Sophora secundiflora
Prunus angustifolia 'Purple Pride'
NATIVE PLANTS NOTIONS BY DARRIN DULING
Gardeners all over the country are falling madly in love with native plants, and their passion for these wonderful “wildlings” sometimes runs so high that they make outrageous claims about their cultivation. This is unfortunate, as bad advice reduces their chances for success in our gardens. Here are a few tips to help dispel commonly held misconceptions: • Ignore claims that native plants are completely caring free – no garden plant is carefree! Even the most stalwart require nurturing during their first months after planting. • Native plants do not have to be allowed to grow “wild” – virtually any plant can be trained to suit a particular landscape by clipping, pollarding, espalier, etc. (for the record, I am not a fan of vegetative “poodles,” although I don’t judge those who are). • Divergent varieties of species, mostly found naturally occurring and brought into horticulture as “cultivars,” offer fresh and appealing garden options. Purists veto their use but unless you are undertaking a scientific ecological restoration, this shouldn’t be an issue – and it appears that our hummingbirds, caterpillars, bees and other native fauna don’t seem to care if garden plants are old school or new-fangled. Let’s start our foray into native gardening by addressing the high demand for trees that are useful for small spaces and/or large containers. Estimated maximum, untrimmed, non-rhapsodic, heights are indicated: Cordia boissieri – Texas Olive. 25 feet. White flower clusters pop against gray-green foliage from spring through autumn. Chilopsis linearis – Desert Willow. 20 feet. Trumpet-shaped flowers in shades of purple, pink and white, spring - autumn. ‘Timeless Beauty’
does not produce seedpods. Crataegus marshallii – Parsley Hawthorn. 25 feet. Fern-like leaves, tiny white flowers, attractive peeling bark. May produce thorns. Attractive red berries and autumn color. Diospyros texana – Black Persimmon. 2 feet. Smooth, sculptural trunks support a delicate canopy. Leucaena retusa – Goldenball Leadtree. 25 feet. Ferny foliage and fuzzy yellow flower clusters. Morella cerifera – Wax Myrtle. 20 feet. Shrubby, but easily trained into elegant, multi-trunked, evergreen trees. ‘Soleil,’ a new goldenleaved variety, is worth hunting for. Prunus angustifolia ‘Purple Pride’ – Purple Chickasaw Plum. 20 feet. From Steven F. Austin University comes an amazing purple-leafed tree with delicious fruit. Rhamnus caroliniana – Carolina Buckthorn – 20 feet. Handsome tree with glossy deciduous foliage. Masses of red and black berries in autumn. Sophora secundiflora – Texas Mountain Laurel. 20 feet. Evergreen. Purple flowers smell like grape candy. Slow growing, but SO worth it! Viburnum rufidulum – Rusty Blackhaw. 25 feet. Dainty white flowers in spring. Blueberries are set against blazing red leaf color in winter.
Keep on Growing!
