reimagining home
I hadn’t thought too much about owls until I saw the recent photos Sarah Heenan Gandy posted on her Facebook page. She was showing the owl house her family had constructed in hopes of attracting these amazing raptors to roost -- in their own Houston backyard. Shortly thereafter I visited my friend Helen’s lake house in North Carolina. For whatever reason, she thrusted a book into my hands almost as soon as I had arrived. The title was simple and rather elementary: “Wesley the Owl, The Remarkable Story of an Owl and His Girl.” “Read it,” she said. “You’re gonna love it.” And so, for the next few days, I cozied up in a cushy chair-in-a-half – my adopted early morning perch – with a cup of Joe and read. Suffice it to say, I loved the book! It’s a fascinating read by biologist Stacey O’Brien. O’Brien, working back in the ’80s at Caltech, got the rare opportunity to raise an injured, newborn Barn Owl that had no hopes of surviving in the wild. Over the next 19 years, she observed and recorded its every move. They don’t usually live longer than 15 years, but Wesley did.
Sarah shares her newfound owl house knowledge on page 34. She tells us how to build an owl house and what benefits to expect. Their owl house did attract the desired feathered family – and it proved to be an exciting learning experience for everyone in Sarah’s own household. While October and November months don’t attract many owls, it may be a good time to build such a house, if you’re so interested. They begin nesting in late winter and early spring. Two home tours take place this month! So, please don’t miss them. See pages 42 and 54. And make sure to buy local at the area farmers’ markets – many of which are noted on page 68. Enjoy, Susan (with Sam & Casey)

Coverings selected for the floors of a home set the tone and personality for the rest of the house — immediately.
Evanescent Nai Sage.
That’s why careful selection of carpets, rugs, hardwoods or tiles is so important when creating a room or entire house design, according to Sam Roberts, owner and founder of Roberts Carpet & Fine Floors in Houston. Roberts, whose family company owns and operates nine locations (the 10th store will open by the end of the year at I10 and the Grand Parkway) in the Houston area since 1984, says the selection of floor coverings needs to match the homeowner’s lifestyle, use and budget. The message his company has been sharing for more than three decades is to research before buying, and work with a professional who can educate the consumer about the technical aspects of the products and assist him/her in making the right choices. Marie Louise.
Roberts Carpet Sets a High Bar WHEN IT COMES TO SELLING FLOORING AND RUGS BY BARBARA CANETTI
And there are many choices. Roberts carries a huge inventory of quality flooring products – and in many cases is the only local sales outlet for some of the nation’s premier brands, such as Mohawk Signature, Royalty Berven and Shaw Flooring. Besides carpeting, he carries an extensive line of hardwoods, ceramic tile, laminates, stone and thousands of area rugs, as well as such specialty flooring as bamboo, cork, leather and vinyl plank. “We know of no carpet program by any premium manufacturer that did not select Roberts Carpet & Fine Floors as their first choice (in Houston),” according to Roberts.
Violetta. 12 house& home | October 2016 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
Karastan Carpets and Rugs One of his signature products is the Karastan carpets and rugs, of which Roberts is the oldest and largest dealer in the area. “Karastan is one of the best products available,” says Roberts. Because of the innovative process developed of making the carpets and rugs, early on it was difficult to distinguish them from the imported originals in the beginning of the 20th Century, according to Karastan officials. Before World War II, wall-to-wall carpeting was unheard of, and if someone did have a carpet, it was very expensive.
Glovenia Talent.
Woolston Plaid.
Rugs at that time were handwoven until the tufting machine was introduced, which allowed for the mass production of carpeting. And once synthetic fibers were invented, affordable carpeting could be produced that was soft, easy to clean and durable. Karastan was known as the “Wonder Rug” when it was first made in 1928. North Carolina textile manufacturer Marshall Field built a loom to create a rug that had the appearance and feel of a handwoven rug. With its detailed craftsmanship and luxurious look, the rugs were a mystery to the American people who had not seen mass produced carpeting before. To introduce their product, Karastan created a gigantic rug and unveiled it at the 1933-34 World’s Fair in Chicago. Instead of putting the traditional looking Persian rug on display for visitors to see, Karastan officials put it on the ground for people to walk on. More than 5 million people stepped on the rug – soiling it, spilling food on it and staining it. According to its company legend, Karastan wanted to prove their product was superior. They then cleaned the rug – but only half of it – to show how durable, tough and resilient the merchandise was. Six years later, they did it again at the New York World’s Trade Fair of 1939 - 1940. This time 9 million people walked on the rugs, and they sustained the heavy traffic and still looked beautiful after cleaning. Roberts says the Karastan products have lived up to their reputation. Although it is not expected that 9 million – or even 5 million – people will step on a rug in someone’s home, it is reassuring to know the quality of the merchandise can withstand the challenge.
Selecting the Perfect Product Roberts says to assist his clients, he has prepared worksheets, informational videos, Q&As and idea pages so the selection process is less overwhelming. Different products are designed for diverse needs in the home and consumers need to educated about the products. His sales staff are not designers and will not make suggestions on color or motif, but they are well schooled in the technical and practical aspects of each product. High traffic areas? Active children or pets? Luxurious and serene nooks or rooms? Formal or casual? Solid or patterned? Warm climates or chilly winters? Excessive dampness or incredibly dry? Each of these scenarios lends themselves to specific products well-suited for the situation. And, Roberts says, it is important consumers have adequate information to make good choices. “We facilitate their selections with information – what would be an appropriate application. They are trained to assist at every price point,” he says. He has a team of installation experts who consistently provide outstanding workmanship in any environment across the city. He prides himself in his business’ longevity in Houston, starting out in a little shop in Southwest Houston. “We are not going anywhere. We are here in Houston to stay. We own all of our buildings and our commitment to quality is absolute,” he says. “My goal is that our customers have a high level of satisfaction and are happy with their home and at the end of the day, they can look around and see their rooms and it brings a smile to their faces,” he says. “That is all that matters.”

DECORATING & ENTERTAINING
By amitha verma
FEEL FESTIVE: TOP THANKSGIVING TABLE DECOR TRENDS From picking seasonal colors to on-trend accessories, creating a fabulously festive Thanksgiving table décor is both an art and a science that anyone can master with the right tips. Luckily, I’ve taken the guesswork out of creating this year’s Thanksgiving tablescape for you so you can instantly “wow” your guests long before the first meal is served. Not only is it easy and affordable to incorporate these trends into your Thanksgiving table décor, your fresh and beautiful Thanksgiving style will last all the way into the new year. Amitha Verma
Are you ready?
Trend #1: Bring in Bright Yellow, Brassy Gold Tones Who doesn’t love the elegance of gold? As one of my favorite metal tones, I couldn’t be happier to see it as one of this season’s biggest trends. Not sure how to pull it off? It’s easier than you think. Here’s how to effortlessly incorporate gorgeous gold tones on your table this Thanksgiving: • brassy chargers • gold candlesticks • glassware with gold highlights • gold place card holders with a personalized note of gratitude • gilt fragments
18 house& home | October 2016 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
19
Repeat these items throughout your table to keep your gold tones consistent and well styled.
Trend #2: Incorporate Organic Floral Sculptures Say goodbye to stylized arrangements and make way for organic floral sculptures. These organic, looser arrangements combined with brighter golds makes for an extraordinary Thanksgiving table. How can you incorporate these trendy organic floral sculptures? Simply follow these rules of thumb: - Look for unique floral arrangements with branches and twigs that exude an organic flair - Think greenery vs flowers to make your table stand out - Use fresh or artificial garland to lay across the table like a runner - Add embellishments with lighting or neutral colored flowers Incorporating these two simple trends are all it takes to give your table a stunning, dramatic, designer style that your guests will be talking about for years to come! Get inspired by stopping by Village Antiques today to shop for these season dĂŠcor pieces. 20 house& home | October 2016 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

PRODUCT REVIEW
High quality upholstered French club chairs from Baker are an integral part of this comfy, traditional living room. Available at Meredith O’Donnell.
ARE ALL CHAIRS BUILT THE SAME? WHAT CONSTITUTES A HIGHER PRICE TAG? “Is a diamond the same as a cubic zirconia? I think not,” says Carolyn Blum, owner of B. deVine Fine Furniture. “From the outside initially, they may look the same, but the value is on the inside – just like with chairs.” Blum says how chairs are built covers a wide range – from poorly constructed or disposable furniture to items purchased and then passed on to heirs. They range in price but also in the look, weight, embellishments and fabrics used. For instance, Blum says well-made furniture uses hard woods – oak, maple or alder—which are sturdier and heavier

than items constructed with pine. “Good furniture is double doweled, glued and screwed, but inexpensive items fall apart. They are stapled together,” she says. “Well, good luck with that! They just won’t last.” Cliff Borel, a senior designer with Eklektik Interiors, notes that furniture in the lower price range tend to be “cookie cutter” chairs of poor quality, whereas a higher priced item may also give consumers options: custom fabrics, special styles. “You get what you pay for,” says Borel, who advises clients to shop with well-respected manufacturers of furniture, rely on

recommendations from professional designers to assist them and research the companies they choose. But buyers need to beware. Inspect the chair and look for the marks of good quality. For instance, Blum says, note the suspension system of the chair to determine what type of springs are inside. The sinuThe Dima chair. Available atf ous spring, or S-spring, may be a sign Meredith O’Donnell. that the manufacturer is cutting corners. The S-spring is usually stapled on the top and again on the bottom, but gives insufficient support when someone is sitting in the chair. The hand-tied spring or woven mesh base provide much better backing and are of better quality. She suggests consumers run their hand along the back of the chair to feel the springs. If they are poking through, that is not a good sign. Also, lift up the cushion to inspect the padding. “Sometimes it is so minimal, you can feel the springs,” she says. Additionally, the type of foam or down used makes a difference for comfort as well as longevity. “Some polyurethane is so bad pillows look and feel like a bag of sand,” Blum says. “There is no soft fluff.” But most important, consumers always need to look for comfort, as well as quality. “If you are planning to keep the chair for a long time and use it a lot, you want a quality item that is well made. You also want to make sure the chair ‘fits’ you well – the depth of the seat, and the firmness and the height of the arms,” Borel says. “Online purchases can be a real gamble unless you have a chance to sit and feel the item or have a designer who can attest to the seating’s comfort and quality,” says Borel. The rules for chairs are not exclusive for interiors. Some basic rules of thumb apply to outside chairs, too. “Outdoor furniture has come a long way,” Blum says, noting that fabrics such as Sunbrella can be successfully used inside or outside, rain or shine. “Outdoor fabric doesn’t fade from the sunlight, doesn’t hold water and drains well and the cushions are appropriate for the outside.” Borel says that good quality patio furniture needs to stand up to the exterior elements and take more use and abuse than interior items would take. “Look for durable and well-styled furniture and pieces that can be hosed down or cleaned easily,” she says. “Outdoor spaces are now designed to be so much more comfortable and livable. The furnishings now available for outdoor spaces can transform you area into something to rival your interior.”

DEAL HUNTER
The BUZZ on the BAYOU CITY’S BEST BUYS Compiled by lindsay Canright
At the star t of autumn, many of us star t to think seriously about par ties and entertaining. Co-incidentally, it’s also the right time to score a deal on appliances.
Bertazzoni 30-inch wall oven from K&N Sales.
“During October, manufacturers release new models of major appliances,” says Howard Schaffer, from Offers.com. “To clear the way for the latest products, retailers will mark down stoves, refrigerators, washers and dryers up to 40 percent.” Whether in the market for a sleek wine refrigerator or a high-end range, interested buyers want high-functioning and low maintenance products, with such features as easy care materials, energy efficiency, long-lasting water filters and expandable space. In the looks department, stainless steel finishes are here to stay. In a survey conducted by Houzz, 83 percent of homeowners chose it as their preferred appliance finish, fingerprints and all. If you have gourmet taste on a family budget, take a cue from Karl Champley of the National Kitchen and Bath Association. “In both kitchens and bathrooms, you can achieve a highend aesthetic by mixing higher and lower priced items,” he says. Though online sales are increasing for large appliances and there are deals to be had, “Consumer Reports” says customers give high marks to local brick-and-mortar stores for their service after the sale. So, it pays to buy local.

OWL IN THE FAMILY INVITE SCREECH OWLS INTO YOUR BACKYARD FOR A FRONT ROW SEAT ON NATURE By Sarah Gandy • Photography by Lance Gandy
Living alongside owls is both entertaining and a learning experience. 34 house& home | October 2016 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
It's a funny thing about owls: They're fairly ubiquitous across popular culture--from ad campaigns to children's literature, but for a native Texas animal that lives amongst us, how many of us have ever seen an owl in the wild? I hadn't. No one I knew had, except for a few very patient and studious bird watchers. So when I saw that a neighbor had a backyard owl house and had managed to attract a pair of Screech Owls and their four babies, I was intrigued. Very intrigued. Some quick research showed that these tiny predators (they top out at about 8 to 10 inches high and weigh less than 6 ounces), are in fact all around us and are well adapted to a semi-urban lifestyle. However they are very still, very quiet, nocturnal in nature, camouflage well, and are allaround masters of stealth. So unless you have a specific spot to look for them, such as an owl house, you likely will never see them.

WHY HAVE AN OWL HOUSE? Though some may argue they're good for rodent control, the fact is they are a lot of fun to have around! Our biggest benefit came from the new interest and excitement the whole family had from observing and learning about nature. Whenever a new behavior was observed, a new round of Googling ensued. What do Screech Owls eat? Mostly rodents, large insects, small reptiles, and small birds. When do they lay eggs? Around April. When will we see the babies? Probably May. Do they mate for life? Yes. Will they come back to the nest after the babies leave? Likely so! Mating pairs stay in the area and often re-use the same nest, but probably won't come back until it's cold or time to breed again. For us, it was an incredible front row learning experience for children and adults alike.
Owls mate for life and usually return to such nests annually.
COMMON CONCERNS How do Screech owls know the box is for them? Will something else move in? The good news is, the dimensions aren't attractive to most other birds. It is a possible nesting place for squirrels and possums, though. The advice I read said that if you see a squirrel move in, you should just leave it there and hang a new box for some prospective owl tenants. I was heartbroken when, the day after installing our box, I saw squirrels going in and out. This continued all winter, and I lost hope. However that March I looked out one day to see an owl sitting in the window! Did the cross-looking little critters evict the squirrel or was it a peaceful handover? I don't know, but, assuming your owl house is well-placed, keep the faith that the owls will eventually find you. Will traffic and noisy kids deter the owls? While owls like their space, I found them to have the calm confidence of a predator, diminutive though they may be. We live near a relatively busy street and have several kids nearby. Even when they were clearly aware we were looking at them, respectfully moving around and taking pictures, they kept a watchful eye on us but were never skittish. BUILDING AN OWL HOUSE Dimensions should be 8x8 inches x 16 inches tall, with a 3inch window at the top. I would recommend a rectangular window instead of a small round one, which some retailers offer, so that you have a better chance to see multiple owlets at once.
Owl houses don’t typically appeal to other types of birds. 36 house& home | October 2016 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

When the owlets get ready to leave the nest, they will need something nearby to practice their flying. If you do not have nearby twigs and branches, consider attaching a dowel or branch to the front of your house. Drill a few small drain holes in the floor so that no standing water collects. Choose a solid, rot resistant type of wood. We used cypress, but cedar is a popular choice as well. If you choose to paint, go with a dark gray or black which will help the house blend into its surroundings. We chose to leave the wood natural and let it weather to a natural gray. If you like you can put a few dry leaves and twigs in the bottom, but nothing green and no soil which could collect moisture and encourage mold, rot or fungus. Not feeling so crafty? www.OwlShack.com is a great Texas resource for learning and buying handmade owl houses.
Have fun naming your owls; the Gandys chose Mama and Papa Hoot.
PLACING YOUR OWL HOUSE Owls prefer to be 10 to 30 feet above the ground. The opening can face any direction except north, which would allow cold winds to blow directly into the house. Mounting on a sturdy, vertical tree trunk is an ideal habitat, though the side of a tall building or even a pole has been known to work in a pinch. Owls like to have a clear flight path to and from the front door. Heavy branches or greenery directly in their path will deter them. Find a location that you can see easily from your own home (trust me, once you have an owl tenant you will get addicted to checking in on them for sightings.), but that gives the owls a comfortable cushion of distance — at least 20 feet. NAMING YOUR OWLS This is an important part of the process, not to be overlooked! Do you go with a pun (Colin P'Owl, Owl Capone)? A pop culture reference (Hootie and the Blowfish? Screech and Song?) Or name it for its looks (Grey-son? Owlbert Eintein, Cobweb?). We named ours Mama Hoot and Papa Hoot and the babies were Who, Whom and Whose. Whatever direction you go, have fun and enjoy your new family members.
Owls are nocturnal, so watch for them in the evenings. 38 house& home | October 2016 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

French Quarters BY AUSTIN ARCENEAUX
When a homeowner and a builder form a relationship, they can create a clear vision. Following the proper execution of that vision, the outcome is a home that satisfies both the needs and desires of the customer. This is what took place between the Schmids and Allegro Builders 15 years ago. During the beginning years of Allegro Builders, owner Lambert Arceneaux and his team undertook the construction of Bill and Trish Schmid’s dream home. From the onset of the project, Bill and Trish envisioned a French Colonial style home and through the guidance of images of desired architectural characteristics provided by Trish, the Allegro Builder team successfully crafted what the Schmids had conceptualized. The timelessness of the architecture and the immense attention to detail found in the home creates a memorable and stylistically impeccable structure that continues to bring the Schmids joy to this day. The Schmids affection for French architecture stems from five years of living in France. On returning to Houston in the early 2000s, further research into the French Quarter of New Orleans 40 house& home | October 2016 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
strengthened the Schmids’ longing for a French style, doublegallery home. Once completed, the home contained three floors, laid out like a Brownstone, with 4,000 square feet of space – with 900 of that square footage dedicated to an awe-inspiring spiral stair case. On the main floor, the Schmids made a compromise between the Brownstone – a more compact style, and the double gallery, a more spacious style. The result: they opted to use columns and level changes to signify separation between rooms rather than walls. To further clarify the distinction between rooms, they chose black paint for the walls in the dining and living rooms, which contrasts with the more neutral wall colors in the kitchen, foyer and family room. The home features some modern design, specifically a cantilevered porch supported by a steel frame. This element allows the porch to remain open without the intrusion of extra support posts. Adding to the character of the home are two murals. Both are hand painted. One, found on the ceiling of the foyer, depicts vegetation sprawling from the edges of the ceiling toward the center. The other, located on the wall behind the bathtub within the master bath, portrays two women pouring jugs of water toward their feet, giving the illusion that they are filling the tub. These murals serve to extend the beauty and detail found in the molding, staircase, windows, and ironwork to other, typically

less memorable, parts of the home -- like the ceiling and wall. Bill and Trish enjoy all rooms equally, in addition to the beautifully landscaped pool area that offers inviting views even when inside. Thanks to the cultivation of precisely crafted details, the home’s historical value is paramount. At the time of its creation, the Schmids’ home was not only happily embraced by Bill and Trish, but also by the home building community, as it won “Home of the Year” and the “Elevation Award.” For the next four years, the home continued to win the “Elevation Award,” thanks to the imposing feeling the exterior of the house emits -- mainly because of the relatively tall foundation on which it sits. Over the past 15 years, the Schmids have only replaced a few rugs, changing very little else. At the current pace with which the Schmids make changes to their home, they will be well into their 90s, having only updated their electronics and maybe a sofa. What will remain is a home corresponding perfectly to the image envisioned by the homeowners and expertly crafted by the builders, who were in turn motivated and challenged by the Schmids’ inability to settle for anything less than what they experienced in France and the French Quarter. FURNITURE ARTISANS INSPIRED BY OLD ARCHITECTURE; THEY OPEN THEIR DOORS DURING ANNUAL HOME TOUR By Barbara Canetti • Photography by Anthony Rathbun The little house in Houston’s East End was totally not what Ford and Hillary Waters were looking for five years ago. They had always lived in the suburbs and preferred modern-looking houses. But there was something about this house –- only 900 square feet –- that caught their attention. Looking back, Hillary notes, she actually hated it. “But the more we did to it, the more we fell in love with the house,” she says. The Waters’ tree-lined street near Eastwood is part of one of Houston’s oldest master planned neighborhoods. Located east of downtown, it was established in 1913 by real estate magnate William Wilson, who also developed the Woodland Heights. The first residents of the neighborhood moved in 103 years ago — with its paved streets, cement curbs, sidewalks, city water-sewer-gas, electricity and well-terraced lots designed for growing trees and drainage. Houses were designed in the Craftsman, Arts & Crafts, Foursquare and Mission architectural styles. Much of the old neighborhood still boasts a collection of these styles. The Waters’ house, however, was not original to the area. It was constructed in 1910 and moved to its present location in 1945 from an unknown location. When a Realtor showed them the cottage, it was cute and nicely staged. But after a home inspection and a bit of investigation, they knew it would require work –- and lots of it. “Our home inspector advised us not to buy the house,” she says, but they were intrigued by the neighbor-

hood and decided to take a chance. It also had a large metal building in the yard, which would be useful as they started their furniture-making business. The rooms in the house were tiny, so they removed the wall between the kitchen and dining room and then carved out a new kitchen. They turned to Craig’s list for cabinetry, the island, counter tops and fixtures and began the adventure of creating a new interior while leaving intact as much of the original elements as possible. The 10-foot-high ceilings made the rooms feel larger, and once they removed a second wall that separated the dining room from the living area, the whole place felt more open. “We didn’t want to lose the historical significance of the house, but there was no room in the kitchen for the refrigerator. We had it in the dining room for a year before we took out a wall that put it back into the kitchen,” she says. The plan had been to Sheetrock the walls, but when

they saw the beautiful shiplap wood under the existing drywall, they left it exposed in places. The hardwood floors were refinished, central A/C added and they leveled the house as much as possible. Where there once was a wall separating the living and dining rooms, there now is a ribbon of original shiplap noting the original split. “It was a neat thing to leave, indicating where there had been a wall. It is interesting – even on the floor,” she says. “We had the house leveled, but it is still a bit crooked although it is sturdy.” They salvaged molding when they removed walls, and recycled it back into the renovation. Anything they didn’t use, they stored away to repurpose for making their furniture or their burgeoning furniture building business. Much of the original siding was restored and they added a deck in the back. They painted the house a dark A wall of cabinets in the kitche, adding much-needed storage.

gray but added a touch of color with a bright orange door and matching orange numbers on the glassed in front porch. The yard was landscaped, and the two-bedroom, twobath house became their cozy home in this changing neighborhood. “Eastwood is a traditional neighborhood, with families, businesses, restaurants and the light rail nearby,” Hillary says. “We love the area. I’ve never felt so connected to a neighborhood before. It is really a community and we are thrilled to be part of the transformation.” In fact, the couple purchased a second property nearby to set up their furniture fabrication business, where they build wood, metal, steel and aluminum custom furniture. “We are extremely proud of what we have been able to do in five years,” she says. This old structure, already there when the couple moved in, is now used as a furniture studio.
“We stepped outside of our boundaries, and now we are excited to show it to others.” The Waters’ home and fabrication shop are part of the 21st annual Eastwood Home Tour, Oct.15 & 16. The East End Foundation and the East End District Management have been instrumental in changing the neighborhood, with giant outdoor murals, weekly farmers’ markets, and the annual East End Festival. As more and more professionals are choosing the East End because of its close proximity to downtown, Hillary Waters noted that rather than tearing down the houses as is happening in so many other Houston areas, residents here are, instead, restoring the houses — and bringing life back to them and the neighborhood. “The homes themselves are a great part of the area,” she explains. “We love riding around seeing what everyone is doing to preserve the neighborhood feel.” A built-in koi pond and thriving herbs make the backyard an inviting retreat.

SANTA BARBARA-STYLE HOME PAYS TRIBUTE TO SPECTACULAR OAK By Marsha Canright • Photography by Ben Hill It started with a tree: a 60-year-old oak with a wide, leafy canopy spreading across a 14,000 square foot lot in Meyerwood. When Brian and Terri Caress decided to move from Sugarland to Houston, they spent time looking for the perfect lot to build a family home. There were many possible options but only one had a spectacular shady oak. It was the deciding factor. 54 house& home | October 2016 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
“The house is built with a focus on the tree and the front court garden that it shelters,” says architect Mark Atkins who owns MASA Studio, the design firm that created the house and its interiors. “There are views of the tree in the dining room and the great room. It’s almost like being outside,” he says. This month the Santa Barbara-style house, with its rich stucco finish, clay tile roof and arched verandas, will be fea-

Designed to meet the needs of an active family with two young teenagers and a golden retriever, it is both elegant and casual. But this is a house of surprises. Past the four-foot wide rustic front door is a gallery anchored by a 250-gallon saltwater reef tank. “When a client wants to incorporate a fish tank, it gets our 56 house& home | October 2016 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

What’s Mushrooming All Over Houston? VENDORS GATHERING TO SELL THEIR WARES By Shirley Barr If the first farmer’s market you visited in Houston was on Airline Drive (Canino Produce) 20 years ago or so, you knew to: • Bring cash • Bargain • Invite friends to co-op because most produce came by the bushel • Expect everything to come from Mexico Those in the know say things haven’t changed much at Canino's and you still should brush up on your Spanish if you want a whole box of mangos for $5. But the many thriving, smaller farmers markets – urban and suburban – aren’t replicating the granddaddy, as local farmers drive their produce in from Sealy, Tomball and even Egypt, Texas. Credit cards are usually accepted; live music is expected; sophisticated shoppers want all-fruit ice bars, hydroponic tri-colored lettuce, and organic meats.

DISCOVER ASIAN GREENS FOR WINTER GARDENING By AngelA ChAndler
Asian greens are superstars of the fall, winter, and early spring garden. They come in a variety of colors, textures and growth habits. They are as ornamental as they are flavorful and best of all they are very easy to grow. You are probably already familiar with two Asian greens that have been found in American markets for some time – Bok Choy and Napa cabbage. But there are others that you will enjoy growing and eating. Shungiku – a member of the chrysanthemum family. Young leaves can be picked individually or the entire plant can be sheared repeatedly to 2 inches every time it is 6 to 8 inches tall. The aromatic leaves can be used in salads, stir-fry and soups. Finger-sized bunches can be dipped in tempura batter and lightly fried. The young stems are tender enough to eat right along with the greens. Chinese celery – a smaller, stronger version of our common celery. Its flavor holds up better in soups and stews. It can be served as a side dish, stir-fried with a little soy sauce and sugar and eaten with hot steamed rice.
76 house& home | October 2016 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
Gai Choy – Asian mustard with a little kick. It’s just what we expect from good mustard greens. Blanching before cooking can tone down some of the strong flavors, but many cooks use it specifically for its pungent bite. It comes in a milder green version and a red version that is reminiscent of wasabi. Japanese Mizuna is another tasty member of the mustard family. It is milder than Gai Choy and can be used raw or pickled as well as in cooked dishes. Gai Lan, or Chinese broccoli – good news for those who love using the stalks of broccoli in cooking. It is similar to broccoli, although a bit stronger, and the stems do not require peeling. It can be blanched and then steamed or stir-fried in recipes calling for broccoli stalks. The leaves are wide and flat and can be used like kale or collards. En Choy – a flavor similar to spinach, but remains a little crispier when cooked. Young leaves can be used raw in salads. Known as Amaranth in the Western market, this green can be grown in a white, green, or red variety. The leaves are high in protein and antioxidants, making them a favorite with vegetarians and juicers.
En Choy is tender. It can be grown until the first frost, and then again in late spring. Mitsuba, or Japanese parsley – used just like parsley in salads and in cooking. The leaves are flat and easier to wash than curly parsley. The plant is actually a perennial, but it will struggle in the summer here. You can try growing it in a container so it can be moved into a shady spot in the summer.

Snow pea shoots – a pretty vegetable that has become very popular in gourmet cuisine. Pea shoots might be the perfect container crop. You can start them twice a month through fall and winter for a continuous crop. Planted densely in shallow containers, your shoots will be ready to harvest in 2 – 4 weeks, depending on the temperature. When they are 4 inches tall, pinch them off above the lowest set of leaves. Most of them will re-grow for a second harvest. Shoots can be eaten raw, or cooked in soups and stir-fry. There are several Asian root crops that can double as greens. Daikon radish and Kokabu white turnip both produce delicious green tops. These are known as “bitter” greens, but are noticeably milder than Western mustard greens. The greens can be used in cooked dishes, but they can also be pickled by themselves or along with the root they produce. Asian greens can be grown in containers, raised beds, or be incorporated into the edible landscape in the spaces between perennials or along borders. Some varieties will be available as transplants, but direct seeding is easy and many more varieties will be available by seed. Direct seeding also allows you to use succession planting for an extended harvest from fall through early spring. Many varieties can grow all season by just harvesting the outer leaves when they are young and tender. Use a compost rich, well draining soil like Arbor Gate Organic Soil Complete. Work in 1-cup of Arbor Gate Organic Blend per square foot. Asian greens will benefit from weekly foliar feeding with seaweed extract. Greens are moderate feeders. Fertilize once a month with additional Blend. Be adventurous. There are hundreds of recipes available for Asian greens. Try stir-fried Shungiku as a side dish to your morning eggs. A bit of finely chopped Mizuna adds a good flavor to meat loaf or spaghetti sauce. A spoonful of pickled Daikon greens makes a nice complement to grilled fish. If you are feeling really adventurous, try your hand at making Kimchi with Napa cabbage. This fermented Korean dish is addictive and you will soon be adding it to soups and rice dishes. You can learn more about Asian greens at the Arbor Gate on Thursday, Oct. 6 at 10 am. See the Classes tab at www.arborgate.com

PET OF THE MONTH HI, MY NAME IS COOKIE! I am a timid Catahoula Leopard dog looking for my forever home. It might take some time for me to come out of my shell, but if you are patient with me, it’ll be worth your while. I’m mostly housetrained: I’m pretty good at barking at the door to let you know that I need to go outside, but I still have some accidents sometimes during the night. I’m looking for a loving and patient owner who can help me fully learn the ropes! I’m used to having free run of the house, and when I’m home alone, I stay in my crate with my toys until my owner returns home. I have lived with children ages 0-12 in my previous home and did really well with them. I will always need a proper introduction to any other pets or children that I might live with, to ensure that our relationship is off to a great start! I’m very loving, and I enjoy receiving affection. I know how to sit and lay down on command. I'm a really sweet girl who would make a great addition to a family looking for a loving and furry companion. I am available for adoption for $95.
