MOVIE NIGHT TO THE MAX Home Theaters Feature Big Screens, Comfy Seating and High Tech Sound By BarBara Canetti

all it whatever you want: home theater, media room, man cave or just an upgraded living room. No matter what its name, the idea of a fully immersive entertainment experience in the home is a popular and growing trend. “From what we have seen, [the popularity of media rooms] has been on an incline since the late ’90s and hasn’t slowed down at all,” says Adam Henry of Capitol Technology Group. With the growing inventory of affordable audio and video equipment available, builders are designing homes with dedicated media rooms that are prewired for electronics. And, says Henry, some developers are even soundproofing rooms during the building process.

18 house& home | October 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

To create a successful home theater, the design of the room is at the top of the list. The size of the system to be installed depends on the size and layout of the room and the furnishings selected hinge on the overall plan. “In most home theaters we will mount a large to extralarge sized TV on the wall with a sound bar under it for a ten-foot by ten-foot room with only a couch. Or, in a full blown theater room in the range of 20 feet by 25 feet and beyond, we recommend projectors paired with large to extralarge projection screens and audio,” says Henry. A rectangular room is preferred for the best acoustics and viewing, placing the screen and speakers along a short wall for optimal sound projection. A room with few or no windows is best, and if there are windows that might admit dis-

tracting light it’s best to use heavy drapes or shades in a blackout style to seal out light. Heavy surfaces with glass could cause sound distortion and framed artwork might reflect sound and light. The walls in the room should be dry walled and painted dark in a flat or eggshell paint. Avoid red or blue paint colors and stick with brown, gray, tan or olive green. Acoustic wall panels are an option, but probably not necessary. If the theater is located in a basement or concrete block area, be sure to cover the walls with studs and drywall. “If it is not in a convenient location in the house, people may not use the room as much,” Henry says. “Generally speaking, we would like to see media rooms above garages, or on first floor exterior walls in order to not disturb the rest of the house when the room is in use.” Controlling sound in the theater makes for a quieter house. Adding wall-to-wall carpeting on the floor helps absorb ambient sounds and makes a good place for kids to watch movies, either lying on the floor or in beanbag chairs. Some rooms are designed with an incline in the floor or platform seating, making it ideal for viewers in rear rows to avoid having to look around the head of the person sitting in front. Seating should be no closer than seven and a half feet from a 60-inch screen and no more than 12 and a half feet away.

The center of the screen should be at eye level. If the room has a low ceiling, tilt the screen slightly towards the viewing area. Speakers are a major component of any theater design. “Aesthetics are very important to most clients and speaker manufacturers understand this. They are designing in-wall and in-ceiling speakers that have incredible technology built into them so that you no longer need massive tower speakers sitting on the floor to achieve big time, quality sound,” Henry says. “The number of speakers in the space are based on client expectations, budget and room layout.” Of course, the accessories needed in a home theater depend greatly upon budget, but certain items make for a better experience, such as integrated lighting control, motorized window treatments or shades and automation control and integration. For example, Henry says, viewers can “with the press of a single button” power on the lighting, projector and media equipment as well as lower the shades, if applicable, to prepare the environment. Once someone hits “play” the room lighting dims to pre-selected preferences and the cable, Bluray, AppleTV or Roku starts. When “stop” is selected, the movie stops and the lighting comes back up. And finally, when finished viewing, simply press “off” and the system gives viewers enough time to leave the room before it completely powers down. Home theater seating is all about comfort, too. K&D Home and Design Studio carries Estella theater seating for two or three persons, as well as a Preston sectional for the whole family. They also stock the Sanai Chair, a power recliner in soft half leather, and an oversized Rajah Chair that offers the ultimate in golden luxury. K&D’s electric-powered Sabrina Recliner Chair also can be paired with a matching three-seater sofa, if desired. And what would any movie be without popcorn or snacks? Gerald Shallenberger of B&G Popcorn says his company has seen an increase in sales of the smaller Fun Pop machines as the home theater trends continue to grow. “These are designed for the home use and they are easy to use; no measurement required,” Shallenberger says. “We have pre-measured kits with popcorn and oil and they come with more than 30 flavors of shake-on sprinkles.” He says his company also sells snow cone machines, as well as equipment to prepare nachos and hot dogs. “They just add to the experience,” he says.

PARTS OF THE WHOLE The Rise of Open Concept Floor Plans Has Created New Needs in Home Design By KatriCia Lang

O

pen concept floor plans have become all the rage over the past 25-30 years, but now the tide is turning as homeowners rediscover the need for smaller dedicated rooms, additional storage, and a way to control the noise from the kitchen or television. The good news is that many of these problems can be solved with interior doors, room dividers and decorative windows. Homeowners can turn plain closet doors into a sliding glass dry-erase canvas for the kids, use a partition to carve out space for a home gym, and even employ a folding screen to hide those storage boxes until there’s time to sort through them all. But where to start? “It’s really going to depend on what you’re trying to do with that space at that moment,” says Romni Cain of Chateau Domingue and its subsidiary, Atelier Domingue Architectural Metalcrafts. 24 house& home | October 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

For example, for homeowners living in an open concept home but who want to entertain in a formal dining room, Cain suggests a sliding pocket door or bi-fold door system. Both save more space than a traditional swing out door, and the bi-fold system creates a wall that can be extended or retracted at will. Another way to create a sense of division and to break up the space is through the use of translucent fixed windows along a second floor. Durango Doors can install those where a low wall or railing would normally go; their folding units also work well for expanding the view and creating an entertaining space to the back yard or patio area. To get the creative juices flowing, clients often look to magazines, their friends’ houses, and the websites of professionals. Think about what you want to accomplish and communicate those needs when consulting with a pro. “It is all driven by the client’s needs,” says The Sliding

Door Company’s Sheryl Hai-Ami. “Let me know, ‘I have kids. I need closets that lock.’ I need to know that so I can make sure we get an accessory that works for you,” says Hai-Ami. Material options such as aluminum, steel and wood each have their own advantages. Aluminum is durable, ecofriendly and energy efficient, says Hai-Ami, whose company exclusively uses aluminum and glass. Steel is similarly durable and energy efficient and can be matched with any decor or time period. After all, metal smiths have been crafting steel doors since before Cleopatra was born. Interior doors are undeniably “in” according to Michael Stinson, owner of Cambridge Doors, Windows & More. “Now people are wanting to put a man cave or a media room in,” says Stinson. Cambridge’s line of interior French doors comes in a variety of styles, including with clear or knotty pine, mahogany, beveled glass or triple insulated safety glass. It’s easy to get caught up with the latest fads, but wood never goes out of style. “Solid pine, alder or mahogany doors are our most popular in various panel designs and sizes," says Southern Front Doors' Jesse Salinas, adding that wood is a better material for soundproofing. Jason Salvaggio of Door Clearance Center says that, “traditional six-panel molded doors are still the most popular interior door. But trends are shifting and solid pine wood doors and modern shaker styles are gaining in popularity.”

When budgeting for an interior door or divider, be sure to factor in the costs for shipping, installation, and upgrades such as designer finishes and hardware. Installation is a daunting task and best left to the pros, but once in place these features yield more than steel frames and hinges. “Room dividers add value to a home beyond doors,” says Hai-Ami. “They help you create relatable moments.”

Ingredients

2 large English cucumbers, thinly sliced

1 teaspoon salt

Method

To make the cucumber salad, add salt, sugar, soy and rice

vinegar to a large bowl and stir until sugar dissolves. Add

cucumbers and toss gently. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and

refrigerate for at least one hour.

Heat the grill to medium high. Coat the fish filets with

olive oil and season to taste with salt and ground pepper.

Place the fish with the skin side down on an oiled grill or in

a fish basket to cook. Grill for about six minutes per side or

Welcome Dear Friends, Welcome to Preservation Houston’s fifth annual Good Brick Tour. Preservation Houston began presenting Good Brick Awards in 1979 to recognize exceptional historic preservation efforts and the people who make them happen. The tour was created in response to many requests for an inside look at these award-winning historic properties. We are pleased to offer you the opportunity to visit five outstanding projects on October 27 and 28. Our deep appreciation goes to the owners of these exceptional properties for restoring their homes and buildings to high standards and opening them for the benefit of Preservation Houston. This year we are showcasing properties from the 1890s through the 1950s in neighborhoods across Houston. These are not museums, but functioning historic buildings and family homes that are making significant contributions to their communities and our city. We also want to thank our many hard-working volunteers, led by our dedicated Good Brick Tour co-chairs Kate McCormick and Cheryl Joseph, as well as the enthusiastic location chairs, docents and Preservation Houston board members who help make this event possible. We are very grateful to our sponsors for their generous support of Preservation Houston. We are especially pleased to have

Houston House & Home return as our exclusive print media partner and thank Susie Tommaney and the magazine’s staff for creating and publishing the 2018 Good Brick Tour guide. Most of all, we would like to thank you for attending our fifth Good Brick Tour and for supporting Preservation Houston through your interest and involvement. You are ultimately our best advocates. After the tour, tell your friends and neighbors about the projects you’ve seen, talk about the importance of local landmarks and historic districts, and let our public officials know that you care about preserving our shared heritage. If you are not yet a member, please join Preservation Houston by visiting preservationhouston.org/join. Thank you, again, for your support. Enjoy the tour. Sincerely,

4. 67 Tiel Way River Oaks

Originally designed by MacKie and Kamrath in 1949, this stunning home in River Oaks earned a Good Brick Award in 2012 for its creative renovation. View it in person on this year’s 2018 Good Brick Tour.

BECOMING ONE WITH NATURE MacKie and Kamrath Designed Mid-century Treasure is Creatively Restored By Sam Byrd • Photos by Mark Scheyer

n 2004, Lynn and Ty Kelly were looking to purchase a home for themselves and their two children. Having lived in Southampton and near Rice University, they never imagined moving into the River Oaks area. However, once they found a modest home that promised 1950s charm and was also nestled close to Buffalo Bayou, they couldn't resist. Just one challenge stood between them and happiness: they wanted to restore the home to its original beauty and reverse the updates made by previous owners. “I think preservation is important. We could have had a beautiful newly constructed house, but there is something about having the roots of the street and it grew from that,” Lynn Kelly says. Designed by MacKie and Kamrath, acolytes of Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural aesthetic, the spacious abode originally was built with the intention of entwining nature and man. Instead of

I

fighting against the slope of the land and horticulture, the home was built to coexist with them. Major rooms are organized around a rear terrace lawn. The master bedroom, a later addition, became a glass pavilion in the garden, embodying the organic concept of living with nature that was central to the domestic architecture. “It’s like we have a private little park back here. It’s so ironic because we’re one block away from busy Kirby,” Kelly says. Despite the proximity to bustling Houston, the home brings the outside to the inside and embodies the symbiotic relationship of man and the outside world. The front-facing garage door is made of redwood. The roofline of the house is low and side gabled. Inside the house, natural wood abounds amongst a plethora of windows to capture sunlight. The house almost melts into the landscape, making it more of an accompaniment than construction. 39

MacKie and Kamrath Architects were firm believers in the philosophy and principles of Frank Lloyd Wright, and that modernism has been lovingly preserved in this mid-century home.

“I think our house is kind of a throwback to a chapter of what Houston was and is and could be. It’s all in one house. The challenge with preservation is to be a little more creative, and it adds a little texture,” she says. The Kellys faced major restoration projects including refurbishing the brick interior, which was painted by a former tenant. They hired Reagan Miller to plan the renovation and expansion of their home. The house originally was built for two adults, but the Kellys needed space for their two children. Miller brought about a plan that kept the original character and intent of the architects’ design, but also met the modern needs of a family. Upon request, Miller designed an addition to the house in the rear that incorporated the brick and redwood and added a second chimney similar to MacKie and Kamrath's signature design of the original chimney. The portion of the two-story addition that is visible from the front of the property is recessed toward the rear of the house, leaving the original structure intact but seamlessly incorporating the architects’ design features of extended eaves, corner windows and use of dark-stained redwood as materials for siding and soffits. Miller also was able to accomplish this feat while managing to expand the home's footprint by a mere three feet. The Kelly family acquired the home to ensure its preservation. They restored the home to its original surfaces and finishes. Their street at one time featured seven homes designed by 41

MacKie and Kamrath; that number becomes instantly impressive knowing the area contains only 32 lots. Their efforts to restore the home earned accolades from the City of Houston. The house is recognized as a designated landmark, making it the second on their street to achieve that status. The Kellys also earned a nod from Preservation Houston with a Good Brick Award in 2012 for the preservation, restoration and enhancement of Houston's architectural and cultural heritage.

The house will be open as part of Preservation Houston’s Good Brick Tour of award-winning historic properties. The tour will take place on Saturday and Sunday, October 27 and 28, from noon to 5 p.m. “If it inspires one person to take a second look at saving something instead of tearing it down, then that’s why we did it. We opened it up to the public. We opened ourselves up to the world, and maybe it will give someone an idea. I want to do my little piece to promote preservation,” Kelly says.

The Heights Textile Mill was constructed in 1894 as a mattress factory for A.R. Morey & Co. in what was then the independent city of Houston Heights. Six years later, the building became the Oriental Textile Mill, which produced filtering fabric for pressing cottonseed into cottonseed oil. The mill complex was expanded several times in the 1920s. After Oriental Textile went out of business, the property was used for a variety of industrial purposes, but was eventually left vacant. New owners renovated and repurposed the deteriorated, water-damaged complex over several years. The building now contains 60,000 square feet of distinctive studio offices and retail space. Remnants of the building’s industrial

past have been preserved throughout the historic textile mill. The original Seth Thomas clock has been restored and still keeps time in the tower, which also contains a unique bi-level apartment. The complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in

1983 and became a designated City of Houston Landmark in 2007. Preservation Houston recognized the owners with Good Brick Awards in 2005 and 2016 for their successful efforts to bring new life to a neglected landmark.

Ownership changed through the decades, but the house remained largely untouched. When new owners set out to rehabilitate the home in 2013, most of the classic design elements were still in place. Before the renovation began, the house was moved eight feet to the west and the driveway was widened to accommodate modern cars. Great care was taken to preserve the home’s integrity. The original floor plan is still evident in the finished house, and the restored door hardware still uses the historic skeleton key. A one-story addition at the back of the house created more living space, but is not visible from the street. The biggest accomplishment

Evidence uncovered during the renovation allowed walls, windows and doors to be returned to their original locations as the house was being converted back to a single-family residence. A major discovery revealed a trap door in the ceiling and the ghost outline of the original

staircase, which was reconstructed with reclaimed 19th-century materials. Preservation Houston presented the owner with a 2018 Good Brick Award for the dramatic transformation of a decaying eyesore into a neighborhood asset.

Ferdinand Schoellfkopf, a German immigrant carpenter, built this house in the Folk Victorian style. It is typical of small houses constructed in working-class neighborhoods throughout Houston in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The house was divided into a duplex in the early 20th century. When the current owner purchased the property in 2016, the house had suffered from decades of neglect. The foundation had buckled and pulled the exterior walls inward, and original detailing had disappeared. During the 14-month restoration, the collapsing front porch was reconstructed to its historic appearance based on interviews with longtime neighbors, and all the historic windows and doors were restored.

Houston builder Ewart H. Lightfoot constructed this comfortable bungalow as his family’s home, and the property has remained with his descendants ever since. The house was a one-story bungalow until Lightfoot added the large, second-story room that gives the building its distinctive appearance. Otherwise, the house has not been substantially changed in more than 90 years. Lightfoot was incredibly inventive and added many unique features to the house. He patented and installed an intercom system, an automated system that opened and closed the windows and an electric mailbox that rang when mail was delivered. The most striking feature is a massive stone fireplace constructed of rock that Lightfoot collected along the

Houston Ship Channel. The project has maintained the home’s comfortable, lived-in feel with family furniture and mementos in place. Original fixtures were refurbished throughout the house; even the distinctive pink color

scheme on the exterior has been preserved. Preservation Houston presented the owners with a Good Brick Award in 2018 for their faithful restoration of this historic property. 47

We discovered this gem on the Garden Oaks Home and Garden Tour this past April, and knew we wanted to know more.

BEAUTY IN SYMMETRY Little Jewel Box in Garden Oaks Was Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright By Natalie de la Garza PHOtOGraPHy By BeNJaMiN Hill PHOtOGraPHy

I

f you’re a fan of a certain great American architect, there’s a home in Garden Oaks you’ve got to see. It belongs to Nautilus Real Estate’s Carol Toups, whose husband brought her to the lot on West 41st Street more than three years ago, guessing correctly that she’d like it. “I loved the lot. It’s a pie-shaped bifurcation between two streets, and it was loaded with beautiful trees. The only thing is they had this ugly little ranch on it,” adds Toups with a laugh. Though no fan of the original structure, there was one aspect Toups did admire.

54 house& home | October 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

“I really did respect the fact that the original builder really looked at the land and built the house so symmetrically on the unusual lot,” says Toups. “That just got our mind working to the only person we know that thought like that — Frank Lloyd Wright.” Inspired to do a “little replica,” the Toups family seized upon Wright’s ideas on symmetry, adding eight square feet so the house would be perfectly symmetrical and installing all the doors and windows the same width. Since the home lacked features to build upon, the Toups incorporated their own, including a brick wall that penetrates both the inside and outside of the house, while also changing the entire floor plan and removing the ceiling in the front room. Tongue and groove pine ceilings now continue throughout the house and give the appearance of going through the glass,

both bringing the outside in and taking the eye and leading it through the space. “If you’re a good builder and a good architect, you lead a person through a home,” says Toups. “They don’t have the option, because the natural response when you walk in is to look up and look out. You’ll follow the lines.” In addition to the ceilings, other examples of woodwork can be found in the home, including rift sawn oak cabinets and interior walls, and a floor made from 20-foot-long longleaf pine boards acquired from St. Anne Catholic Church. “We wanted that warmth that comes from wood and brick and earth materials,” says Toups. One of Toups’s favorite pieces is an old commercial cabinet she bought at auction. Originally made for a mercantile to store dry goods, the piece features glass drawers adorned with little gold medallions that say the word “out,” which years ago would have let a shop owner know it was time to reorder. Toups now uses it as a pantry. “I grew up in an old store like that,” says Toups, “so it had meaning to me.” 56 house& home | October 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

The cabinet was one piece Toups knew she wanted to incorporate into her next home, but she admits she and her husband had much to choose from as the couple was downsizing from 3,800 square feet. “We took the things we particularly liked the most of all of our things because we were more interested in things that meant something to us,” says Toups. They were assisted in their efforts by the decision to forego a garage, adding instead two carports, each leading to an enclosed brick patio on either side of the house. “Every garage I’ve ever had in my life has been full of junk and there’s no room for any junk,” says Toups, adding that she finds her car stays cooler and that the space can be used to entertain guests. Outside the home visitors will find a four-foot-high green wall on one side of the living area — “It’s our screen rather than having draperies,” says Toups — but there’s one thing that won’t be found. “One of Frank Lloyd Wright’s features is that you’re not supposed to know where to enter,” says Toups. “Wright did

that on purpose because he wanted you to observe everything prior to you going [in].” Though there’s no obvious entrance and no doorbell, there are some clues, including several slate steps and slate pillars with number signs. Still, Toups laughs, “I don’t think I’ve ever had a person come to my door.” Looking back, Toups says it was when they finished designing the house — which she calls “the little jewel box” and saw just how unique it was — that they realized it was just the place for her and her husband. “We really realized that smaller living is so much simpler. It un-complicates your life a lot, and we felt that in retirement that’s something that we really appreciate,” says Toups. “It’s just a small house packed with a lot of good things.”

A TREE HOUSE FOR A HOUSTON FAMILY A Closer Look at One of the Stunners on This Year’s AIA Houston 2018 Home Tour By Marsha Canright PhotograPhy By BenjaMin hill PhotograPhy

estled among half a dozen old oak trees, this contemporary family home near Rice University is an ideal haven for Houston physicians Justin Bird, Terri-Ann Samuel and their three young children. “We love the views from the top, the open space for entertaining and the wonderful location,” Samuel says. Designed by Rame and Russell Hruska, principals at Intexure Architects, the 5,000 square foot house has five bedrooms, four and-a-half baths, and a private suite for grandparents or other visitors. It was completed in 2017.

60 house& home | October 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

“The exterior is a combination of brick, natural stucco, metal, glass and hardwood, so it has warmth while embracing modernity,” Rame Hruska says. “We took special care to blend the design of the new structure to fit with neighboring houses on University Boulevard. It fits the family’s casual lifestyle, aesthetically and practically. “We wanted to fill the space with natural light but keep a connection to the beautiful oaks and preserve private spaces for the family,” she says. “The downstairs living areas are large and open so it’s easy for the parents to keep an eye on their little ones,” Hruska says. The architects chose durable, family-friendly materials to keep the house looking great and to make cleanup easy. The flooring is slate gray polished concrete, sleek and modern, but almost indestructible

The open living area on the ground floor extends to the back garden and pool, making it ideal for entertaining. The architects chose durable materials, like this polished concrete floor, with easy clean-up in mind.

“We wanted to fill the space with natural light but keep a connection to the beautiful oaks and preserve private spaces for the family.” — Rame Hruska, Intexure Architects The front entry and the adjacent dining area have 21-foot ceilings with open sight lines to the back of the house where wall-sized windows overlook the garden and pool areas. A sculptural steel staircase ascends from the entry with multiple framed views of the trees, flanked by a wall of ipe wood. A cozy office, perched above the treetops, has panoramic views of Rice Stadium, the medical center and the downtown skyline. It’s a quiet place for Bird to think and to tackle problems in different ways, but the whole family enjoys the views from the office; they were able to see the Fourth of July fireworks from Hermann Park. The heart of this house is the kitchen, which has a wide island designed for the kids to eat or do art projects or homework. There is a large pantry with a ladder to make every shelf accessible and a built-in Miele coffee maker for specialty

brews. A mudroom transitions from the garage to the house with ample storage for shoes and backpacks. Other features are low-e insulated windows, highly efficient AC, low-flow plumbing and solar-ready connections. “We learned so much in the process of building the house; I learned the importance of patience and also that aiming for perfection can be counterproductive. Almost perfect with some wiggle room is fine,” Samuels says. One design challenge was how best to create a subtle approach to the house and provide ample guest parking. The architects didn't want paving to dominate. “We solved this with a gravel area for guest parking that blends with the landscaping and we added an enclosure that allows children to play in both the front and back yard. Custom planters help to blend these areas with the landscape,” Hruska says.

(BELOW:) Built among a dozen large oak trees, the house is warm, welcoming and spacious with enclosed play areas, front and back, for the couple's young children. GARDENING

by linda b. Gay, HorTiCulTuriST and Gardener | pHoToS by linda b. Gay

The McGovern Centennial Gardens at Hermann Park are home to 55,000 perennial bulbs and 650 azaleas. Shown here are the narcissus plants during their springtime bloom.

NATURALIZING BULBS FOR SPRING GARDENS Bulbs That Flower Between March and May Should be Planted This Year

W

e all like surprises, especially those botanical wonders that pop up in our garden during a Texas winter. These deciduous beauties emerge as the soil temperature cools off producing strap-like leaves in January and February. We might even have forgotten what we planted last year and this winter appearance has us excited and curious to see what this beautiful flower will become. Deciduous is another name for losing leaves or dying down and returning when the conditions are right. To naturalize means to establish “into the wild” a flourishing non-native bulb or plant. Our Texas climate is very extreme and planting bulbs that adapt to our climate can be surprising, rewarding and exciting. One way these bulbs naturalize is by becoming winter growers, spring bloomers and summer dormant, just like many Texans! Another way to have bulbs return is to create well-drained soils with aggregate and 72 house& home | October 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

rock so that the bulbs do not sit in waterlogged clay soils or rot from summer rains when dormant. Spring flowering bulbs bloom in March through May and must be planted between October and December so that the bulb can root in, grow foliage and flower when conditions are right. The most popular spring flowering bulbs include narcissus/daffodil, Leucojum, ipheion, Dutch iris and Scilla. After blooming they die down to the ground and sleep for the summer, re-emerging in early winter. Narcissus and daffodil are closely related; narcissus normally produces a cluster of flowers on one stem and daffodils have one flower per stem. These bulbs are poisonous so you don’t have to worry about wild animals eating them. Some of the popular narcissus plants include paperwhites, “Grand Primo,” “Erlicheer” and the sweetly fragrant campernelle. One of the most frequently asked questions is how deeply

should the spring flowering bulbs be planted. My general response is two times the depth of the bulb, so if the bulb is one inch from the nose to the root, plant two inches deep into the soil; this does not include the mulch layer. Daffodils and narcissus are larger bulbs and normally one and a half to two inches from nose to root, so they get planted three to four inches deep. Always make sure your soil is well drained by working expanded shale deep into the heaviest part of the clay; otherwise the dormant bulbs will rot during a wet summer. The narcissus “Grand Primo” will Another frequently asked question is when to plant the thrive even in heavy clay soil and is known to be deer resistant. bulbs. Gardeners share bulbs with family and friends regularly, so the answer is when you get them. Bulbs get divided after they bloom and will go dormant for the summer; I recommend using a plastic or clay pot with soil on the bottom of the pot. Put bulbs in a container, cover with soil and place in an area that gets watered; then hold until the bulbs sprout. You will have a better idea of what the foliage looks like and where to plant in the garden. Perennial bulbs keep their foliage year round and include crinum, amaryllis and agapanthus. They should be planted in the garden right away as they keep foliage year round and do not disappear. These bulbs have long necks and should be planted with the necks halfway out of the soil. Planting of bulbs in the garden should be done in mass groupings; do not line them up in a straight line or make a border. It is too hard to keep them from being “shoveled” when they are sleeping. I like to place them in circles and create triangle spacing within the circle. If planting bulbs two inches deep, space two inches apart; if three inches deep, three inches apart; etc. Bulbs reproduce better in full sun but can take a little filtered light. Remember our winters are cloudy with little sun so find the sunniest spot for your treasures to naturalize. Planting underneath a tree that RESOURCE loses leaves during winter makes a great little rock garden for The Arbor Gate 281-351-8851 your special bulbs. 15635 FM 2920, Tomball Want to learn more about naturalizing bulbs? PET OF THE MONTH

OUR NAMES ARE MAXXX AND TYCA Maxxx and Tyca are a pair of senior pups who have been waiting for the perfect home since May. They are bonded, which means they are full of love, but it also means they have to be adopted together! Maxxx is eight and Tyca is nine, and they love each other very much. They’re still active, despite their age, and they love attention. They are both house trained, know basic commands and have been around children. They can be a little bit shy at first in new situations, but once they feel comfortable they really shine. Because Maxxx and Tyca are a bonded pair of senior pets, they are available to adopt at a discount through the Golden Paws program. Maxxx ID# 363718 (male) Tyca ID# 99631 (female) Ages 8 and 9 The Houston SPCA, 900 Portway Drive, is open seven days a week, Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to make choosing the adoption option as easy as possible.
