EDITOR’S NOTE It’s not even Thanksgiving yet, and we’re already thinking about the holidays around here.

Hard to believe . . . . But, yes, you’ll find this issue chock full of ideas — from gifts to entertaining and holiday decorating. We try to stay a step ahead, which we hope benefits both our advertisers and readers. Our advertisers, may I offer, allow us to place this publication on newsstands at no cost to you. So as a thank you to them, please consider visiting their stores when you shop! “Buying local” affords us all so many benefits. It means employment opportunities for many — and remember the sales taxes go to fund our schools, parks and recreational facilities, in addition to covering road and signage expenses. Houston gives us such great options. When you’re out and possibly looking for books, either for yourself or to give as a gift, I’d like to pass along these three to consider: Giada de Laurentiis will be signing her book, Giada’s Feel Good Food, at the Williams Sonoma store in Highland Village on Nov. 12. See our Calendar listing for more info. All the Best blogger Ronda Rice Carman recently stepped into Carl Moore Antiques’ shop on Bissonnet to sign her first-ever title, called Designers at Home. She gives

us a peek into the homes of 50 designers. One of whom is Texas designer Jan Showers. In fact, Showers will be at Carl Moore on Nov. 12 from 10 a.m. to noon to sign her book, Glamorous Retreats. In Carman’s book, she shares some personal insights about the holidays and entertaining — apropos to this issue and the related article within. “Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday,” says Showers, who enjoys having her family gather at her table in Dallas. When entertaining, she prefers limiting dinner guests to eight. And she tries to do as much in advance of the party as possible. “A relaxed hostess and simply prepared foods will always be a hit. “Never underestimate pretty stemware and a beautifully set table,” she adds. Happy shopping! Happy Thanksgiving, Susan (and Sam) HOUSTON

Southland Homes Helps Save Historic Property, Giving it New Life The handsome gray cottage at 1005 Oxford Street is a Cinderella story from beginning to happy ending. It is the winner of the Houston Heights Community Improvement Award for Residential Renovation and will be featured on the Heights Historic Homes Tour in April 2014. The cottage was an unlikely candidate for celebrity when Colin Shelton, president of Southland Homes, had his first look at it almost two years ago. Built in 1896 for a German immigrant family, the small house had fallen from an earlier graceful state into ragged disrepair. Shelton couldn’t quite visualize the award-winning home that would soon unfold. “I was surprised it was still standing,” he says. The Houston builder had renovated dozens of historic homes in three Houston historic districts, including the Heights and River Oaks, but this house was in the worst condition he had ever witnessed. Details of a classic cottage – the broad-balanced windows and lofty 10-foot ceilings – were marginally visible. Years of neglect and vacancy, termites and fires, and do-it-yourself construction had taken a heavy toll on the 1,100 square foot property. Homeowner Bobbie Knox Echard purchased the house in December 2010 after a two-year search that included viewing more than 200 properties. She knew she wanted to settle in the Heights, and when she found the cottage, dilapidated but with a certain charm, she knew she was home at last. Echard moved into her fully renovated home last November. “Bobbie Echard is dedicated. She knew what she wanted. She had a vision and a plan, and she assembled a team who could do the job,” Shelton says. With Echard at the helm, the team included designer Colby Weems of C Weems Designs, Troy Campa of NewberryCampa Architects, and 10 house& home | November 2013 | www.houseandhomeonline. com

Shelton’s Southland Homes. “Not many people can say they love their builder when the project is complete – but I truly can,” adds Echard “Southland’s entire construction team was patient, fully engaged, sensitive to my budget, committed to quality, and the end product is beautiful,” she says. The house actually came in about 5 percent under budget. For Shelton, the house was a fun project but also complex and challenging. “We kept the shell of the house, and we replaced the walls, floors and interiors – always with appropriate materials for the period and in the original style,” says Shelton. The foundation was rebuilt from the inside out. The house doubled in size to 2,200 square feet and is comprised of three bedrooms, two baths, and a garage apartment. The plan is so seamless it’s hard to tell the addition, says Shelton. Since its completion the project has gleaned several awards. In addition to the Heights renovation honors, the cottage kitchen has received a Prism award from the Greater Houston Builder’s Association, and a Star award from the Texas Association of Builders. Historic property renovations are more complex than new construction and always have special needs, explains Shelton. There is the important and often time-consuming work with historic district boards that govern and protect the historical significance and ambience of the neighborhoods. Part of his job involves walking the homeowner through these procedures. In past projects, Shelton has commissioned craftsmen to rebuild antique windows and to custom cut molding to match original fittings. In this house everything had to be symmetrical, lined up perfectly, which was not an easy task.

ABOVE: The kitchen is part of the open floor plan. The countertops are honed Carrera marble; the backsplash is Ann Sacks; heath-white ceramic. All cabinetry is custom built. BELOW LEFT: The central hallway (seen here from the front door) connects the entire house and acts as an art gallery. BELOW RIGHT: The master bath flooring is grey BXLS imported from Italy.

“We do quite a bit of work in the historic districts; it’s probably 60 percent of our caseload,” according to Shelton. “Renovations are a part of our business that also includes new home construction. Shelton has been a builder for nine years, and started Southland Homes in 2007. “This house turned out to be a beauty; it’s truly unique. The exterior is traditional but the interior is contemporary and is exactly what the homeowner wanted,” he says. “When you save an old house, and you add all the modern comforts, there’s something about it that is rewarding. It’s a good feeling to be able to bring it back to what it should be.” Customer service is key to Southland’s business, Shelton said, and customers like Echard agree. “When we finish a job, we’re proud of it. We care about details and the quality. And, we build lasting relationships with our customers.” Southland Homes of Texas, 713.862.5214, www.buildsouthland.com 11

TASTEMAKER

MELINDA MARYE-KELLEY

Custom tissue boxes and letter boxes are among favorites.

Marye-Kelley Decoupage is a mainstay 20-year vendor at the annual Houston Ballet Nutcracker Market, which takes place this year November 7-10 at Reliant Center. Anyone who has been to the market knows Melinda’s coveted products . . . the decorative tissue boxes, eye-catching small trash baskets and an array of other hand-made items. Wastepaper baskets for every day or seasonal.

Decoupage Design An interview with Melinda Marye-Kelley How did your decoupage empire begin? I believe that all of the work experiences in my life helped to guide me on this decoupage path. I was the Assistant to the Executive Director at the Ronald McDonald House. My boss was an incredible mentor and taught me a great deal about running a business office. I learned the day-to-day nuts and bolts of operations, accounting, and working with board members and volunteers. I met my husband, Bill, in 1990, when he was living on Block Island, Rhode Island. He made furniture and birdhouses — and I painted them. We sold them on the island that summer. I soon became fascinated with decoupage. I remember going out and buying some clear glass plates and asking my mom for magazines that I could cut up to use to make the plates. An issue of Colonial Homes had an article called “Papered Plates.” It 16 house& home | November 2013 | www.houseandhomeonline. com

was a feature on Federal-inspired decoupage plates. In that one moment, I felt like I found my way. Do you have an educational background in art? What is your business/educational background? Growing up I always loved arts and crafts and actually did quite a bit of decoupage. I studied Fashion Merchandising at The University of Texas and enjoyed the applied art classes. When I first started the business, I did take some classes at HCC . . . sculpture, ceramics and welding. What was the first year or two like in business for you? The first year or two it was just me — decoupaging and selling my goods. I spent four or five months selling on Block Island in the summer. My then future husband Bill begin to join in the fun and help with production during the summer.

What have you learned and can share with others? For us the key to building our business has been loyal relationships and hard work. Relationships with our employees, our customers, and our vendors have been instrumental in our business. What were your first products? And how did you sell them initially? The first items I made were actually brightly painted fish wooden magnets that I sold at Surroundings. Then that fall I started making decoupage plates. I gave them as gift to friends and they ordered some to give as gifts. Next I met with buyers and sold to Surrounding, Bering's and Design Design.

You have been such a mainstay at the Nutcracker Market; how did that begin for you? And why do you return? Our first Nutcracker Market was 1993. I sold items there through Design Design in 1991 & 1992 and did very well. So the next step was to apply myself. I was so excited when we got in. We started with just a 10x10 booth, now we have grown to a 40-foot booth. What’s ahead for Marye-Kelley? Very soon we hope to move to 1740 Westheimer, next to the Empire CafÊ. We are hoping that having frontage on Westheimer.

How many employees do you have? And where are the items you sell made? We have seven full time employees and six part time employees. My husband and I also work full time in the business. Our production team has been with us since 2006. They are extremely loyal and dedicated. All items are handmade right here at 2515 Morse St. Do you actually do any of the designs or decoupage work? I create almost all of the designs. Right now we have such an incredible team in the art department that I am able to delegate more for new designs that I then help fine-tune. We all work well together as a team to come up with ideas and solutions. The only actual decoupaging that I do now is one-of-akind creations for custom orders. Inspiration is everywhere: maps, art, clothes, photographs, books, travel, cooking, color, dreams . . . .

On the personal side... Is your family involved in the business? We are very much a mom and pop business. We have three children (two boys and a girl). What do you like to read? I used to be a voracious reader. However, for the past few years any extra time is spent reading with our kids, homework or a cookbook. I am constantly working on our Web site. Where are you originally from? I was born and raised here in Houston, as were my parents. What can you not live without? This is the easiest question- my family.

What do you like to do in your time outside of work? Spend time with my family. I love to cook and we all enjoy having the whole family over for dinner.

Due to the change in styles of the two houses we did not know where to begin, so we called you,” Cathi explains. She recalls there being a definite meeting of the minds that first day, although Cathi thought a couple of suggestions just would not work. Marc encouraged her to go along with my ideas since they had hired me for my expertise and should trust the advice. “ I was reluctant,” says Cathi. “Long story short it was the best possible decision—I am so glad I listened to you!” The visit went longer than she thought it would. “Again, in hindsight, I suppose those conversations really helped you to understand what we envisioned for our-

AFTER: Using my measurements to ensure correct proportion, the couple shopped and found the dining room buffet at Star Furniture, the buffet lamps at Target, and the upholstered host/hostess chairs flanking the buffet came from Ballard Designs (www.ballarddesigns.com). Cathi framed their son Steven’s artwork using stock frames from Michael’s, and her brother made the couple’s mirror for them in the ‘80s. The angel collection was purchased during an after-Christmas sale at a favorite gift store in Kansas. BEFORE: The dining room needed a taller buffet, artwork and upholstered host/hostess chairs flanking it to widen the room. 24 house& home | November 2013 | www.houseandhomeonline. com

selves and allowed you to think through the solutions you offered. I can’t argue with success,” she says. Another problem Cathi had was visualizing the dining room with its buffet table and side chairs. But I listened and applied your suggestions and the rooms work beautifully,” she adds. Family and friends have all provided positive comments. The couple loved the ideas for the holiday decorations. “Our tree is always a live tree, traditionally strung with popcorn garlands,” Cathi says. She particularly enjoyed the simple, easy ideas for the table tops that I took the time to showcase in their home for the holidays. “Your measurements and recommendations on where to find fabrics, simple chairs and rugs were a God-send since we were new to Houston,” she explains. “This allowed us to choose what we liked while staying in the parameters of your overall design of the rooms. We are so glad we hired help! It would have been very frustrating—and not nearly as successful, if we had not hired a professional,” Cathi says. As a minister’s daughter, traditions run deep. Her parents had an annual Open House for their congregation, and she watched her Mom bake thousands of cookies in preparation. One of her earliest memories was stringing popcorn for their family’s Christmas tree. “We did it faithfully every year, and I remember it being a long, arduous chore. When Thanksgiving winds down, I look forward to the evenings when I sit and string popcorn. It brings back fond memories of holidays as a child-- and my own tree would not look right without the popcorn garlands!” Cathi explains. AFTER: The gold chargers and Christopher Radko salad plates came from Target. The red square plates came from Pottery Barn; the cut crystal glasses and flatware Cathi inherited; and the smooth goblets came from AceMart restaurant supply. The woven placemats came from Pier One Imports.

Closet Factory designer, Marie Spratford, was asked to redesign a client’s closet because it had long been on their list of home improvements. The closet Marie had to redesign consisted of standard builder cleats, rods, shelves and a peninsula. On their wish list was a space for purse storage and a display area. The finished product was their dream closet. The client’s response to the finished project, “The closet feels like my favorite boutique in River Oaks!” Another job well done.

ENTERTAINING IDEAS FOR HOLIDAY PARTIES THAT SPARKLE

There’s a not-so-distant jingle signaling the season for presents and parties, and customs and cranberry sauce. But a tradition-packed holiday doesn’t have to mean same ol’ decor. Break with the built-in color palette of red and green and go glam — starting with the invitations, which set the mood for any festivity. “We’re seeing a lot of glitter,” says Katie Hackedorn, owner of Katie & Co, a fullservice invitation and stationery store in the Heights. “You always see red and green, but we’re also seeing a lot of red and turquoise, which has a wintery feel.” Checkerboard, Designer’s Fine Press, and Lallie all offer holiday options with texture. “Letterpress, die cut, and laser-cut pieces are popular and very pretty,” Hackedorn says. An interesting and eye-catching tablescape will infuse your party with holiday cheer. “I like the decor to be abstract and playful — to take it out over the edge,” says Kelly Gale Amen, an interior designer and art furniture designer. “Not everything has to be uniform.” Before you commit to spending the big bucks on a set of holiday dishes, consider using what you already have in your china cabinet. “Not everything has to say Christmas or Hanukkah all over it,” says Christina Landrum, a native Houstonian and the mastermind behind Pomp & Circumstance Event Design. “You can use your china, your flatware, your glassware and give the table a holiday touch with decor.” Landrum uses metallics to make holiday tablescapes shine. “Anything gold or silver — and the more glitter the better!” she adds. For dinnerware, Amen favors geometric prints, which make place settings pop and are suitable for serving guests throughout the year. Decorate your chairs! “Most dishware is circular and geometric print is angular. It’s a great juxtaposition,” he explains. Flowers bring a freshness to the table, but they are no longer the only option for centerpieces. “For centerpieces, I love branches,” says Landrum. “For an upcoming winter wonderland party, we’re using glittery trees.” If you’re not planning on outsourcing the centerpiece duties to a local pro, go easy on yourself. “For a round table, I love to do a mirrored centerpiece with small flowers at each place setting,” Amen says. “Low centerpieces make it so you can really converse.” At the end of the meal, give your guests a memorable send-off with a thoughtful take-away. “Everybody likes to receive a little gift, such as a sweet treat in a pretty package,” says Hackedorn. If a guest has a known food allergy or a dietary restriction, find a suitable substitute — or go a different route. Share your favorite candle find, for example. “A lot of hosts will give out dessert favors, so that guests have something sweet when they’re leaving,” Hackedorn adds. “Try a miniature pumpkin bread or muffin in a cute cellophane bag or a cupcake box.” Again, be thoughtful enough to plan on adding sugarfree items or perhaps dried fruit and nuts to the selection — for those with dietary restrictions.

6 TIPS FOR PLANNING A HOLIDAY PARTY 1. Start early. People tend to wait until after Halloween, but the summertime is a good time to dive into the holiday planning. (Christina Landrum) 2. Send a paper invitation. Around the holidays, it’s nice to see something a little more special than junk mail. (Katie Hackedorn) 3. Get inspired. Find one main thing that inspires you and work from there. (Christina Landrum) 4. Plan your table in advance, so everything works together. A beautiful table is like a beautiful lady. She has the necklace, bracelet and earrings — and it all works together. (Kelly Amen) 5. Obey the mathematics of comfort. Thirty inches is ideal for each place setting. Nobody wants to be elbow-to-elbow. (Christina Landrum) 6. Hire a planner to help coordinate for the day-of. Find a way to be a host, instead of the one running everything. (Christina Landrum)

Candles. Garlands. Table toppers. Interesting upholstery. It doesn’t take a lot to dress up your home for its holiday best. Sometimes, as many Houston designers and decorators have discovered, it’s the small things that stand out. “I noticed a trend in the natural look for Christmas this year,” says Kathy Stratton of C&D Hardware. “You can take some wood Santas, Nutcrackers and reindeer, then add a bit of fresh or artificial greenery and some snow to capture an updated look. Burlap is also a hot look right now and mixes very well with traditional Christmas colors.” At C&D, you’ll find large rolls of burlap that you can use to make inexpensive custom table runners or monogrammed placemats. Steven Joseph in Events gifts department echoes the sentiments about table runners, and recommends using them as a backdrop for every holiday this season. “Put some beautiful tapers in a candle ring and group them together on a table runner or on the coffee table,” he suggests. “Or make your platters and serving-

Interior designer to kitchen expert -- and candy maker: Susan Schneider

Waste not,

Want Not BY SUSAN FOX

Tips From a Kitchen Space Designer — and Toffee Maker

Schneider lowers the sides of the pan drawers to ensure easy retrieval.

Enter the neatest kitchen in the world and, still, most people fidget with the notion of others opening their kitchen cabinets, drawers and pantries. But not so with Susan Schneider. She encourages it. You see, Schneider — a Texas-registered interior designer specializing in kitchen space — is a pro when it comes to organization, and she’s a keen-eyed sleuth when it comes to finding extra storage space — in the kitchen, in unsuspecting places. For example, in her own kitchen flatware drawer, Schneider had it fitted with two levels as opposed to the usual one. So, open her drawer and there are two levels of neatly placed spoons, forks and knives. The top-level drawer slides back when the bottom drawer is fully extended.

Mini work stations prove efficient. Here she has her various ovens (microwave, warming and double wall) in one area.

Absolutely everything has its own place in Schneider’s Braeswood kitchen.

She also omitted the space divider in her upper cabinet. It is easier to retrieve and return the long serving dishes stored there. Rather than do the A to Z work needed to create the dream homes clients want, she works with other interior designers. They hire her for very specific skills: to blueprint the organizational and storage space desired in a kitchen. Her own kitchen became her work lab when she remodeled it almost 14 years ago. Many of the storage solutions she came up with then continue to please clients today. “It was an all-white kitchen with quality wood cabinets. The people who did it, did a nice job. The layout didn’t quite work for me, though,”she says of her old space. “I wore both the designer and client hats,” she says about her own remodel, which involved gutting the entire kitchen space. She 40 house& home | November 2013 | www.houseandhomeonline. com

Schneider positioned her “fold out” pantry on the other side of the peninsula, which serves as a work area and eating bar.

began asking herself the same types of questions she poses to clients. For example, she might ask them what they cook and what type of preparation occurs? Is there more than one cook? Is an office area needed, or how about a spot for quick lunches and conversation? “I know how I cook, and I know where things need to be,” she says. If she wants to bake, for example, she prefers keeping the mixer and all related utensils and bowls in one designated area in the kitchen. Such mini work stations improve space and time efficiencies. In addition to needing a very organized space that suited her busy family’s lifestyle, she says durable yet classic materials received top consideration as did lighting. She chose absolute black granite for the countertops, sleek wood cabinets — more befitting to her more modern home decor -- and white hard-working melamine interiors for the maple drawer boxes. She added recessed halogen lights — both low and high voltage — and selected easy-to-clean 14-inch porcelain tiles for the floor. New, high-end appliances were a must for this venerable cook. To give her more countertop space, Schneider had a pull-up table for the mixer built. It is all hidden from plain view — behind a lower cabinet door. She also added a pennisula that serves as both a work space and eating bar. “If I have one spatula, I have eight,” she says with a smile. “I wanted them to all be together, which allows helpers to easily find or put away items. I like a clean look.” Schneider says her kitchen fits the style of the house and continues to look and serve well. It’s all about planning . . . .

Susan’s Toffee A Holiday Favorite! Susan Schneider’s kitchen is where it all began! After learning how to make it, the oft-described “wow!” chocolate pecan toffee became Schneider’s “go-to”dessert that she’d take to parties. Soon, friends and family wanted to buy the candy from her. The rest is history. It is now available to all. Described by most as having a delectable taste and texture, Susan sells it through the Schneider Kitchens Toffee website: www.schneiderkitchenstoffee.com. The holiday season is when business really picks up, so allow for a week or two for orders. The packaging -- with handmade paper flower bows from Paper Floral Artistry by Balushka -is as sweet as the candy itself. She also packages it all up in custom containers or festive red boxes adorned with simple ribbons. Info.: 713-665-1950

Ginger, Spice & All Things Nice at The Arbor Gate The holiday spirit is in the air at The Arbor Gate in Tomball. “We decorate year-round,” says Beverly Welch, owner. “We’re very much about what’s going on at the moment.” A pleasant stroll through the grounds leads you to The Arbor Gate Too!, a delightful 1930s frame house moved and renovated from the Heights and now surrounded on all sides by stunning display gardens. Here, discover a veritable boutique of gifts for all occasions. • Housewares Find Ann Swan’s porcelain china in a variety of botanically accurate designs and Jan Barboglio's hand-etched glass goblets set in hand-forged metal holders. Then there’s the new “Trout Unlimited” collection of pottery tableware by Richard Branble and Spiritiles by the artist Houston Llew. • Cooking Goods & Yummies There are cookbooks and organic condiments and cooking oils, as well as an all-time favorite: gourmet popcorn drizzled with chocolate, nuts and cinnamon.

Above, right and below: In The Arbor Gate Too! gift shop, the innovative staff has created a “Gingerbread Wonderland,” with realistic resin gingerbread houses decorated from top to bottom and on all sides, bottle-brush trees and darling doll characters set about — including the nursery’s own “Elf on a Shelf,” Basil (at top). “Gingerbread houses are such traditional decor for the holidays,” says Beverly Welch, Arbor Gate owner. “They’re a great way to add that warm holiday feeling.” All items are for sale, with the houses starting at $70.

• Art & Accessories Handmade crosses by area artisans (“We try to support our Texas artists,” Welch says), cowhide purses with turquoise embellishments, peacock-feather wreaths, Tyler Co.’s oh-smell-sogood candles, exquisite lamps with turn-the-head lampshades... the selection is incredible. • For the Kids They’ll love the hand-painted wooden box advent calendars with decorative door handles and deep-set windows for placement of celebratory items. And don’t forget to take home an “Elf on a Shelf” kit. Attend any of The Arbor Gate’s classes this season, including the Christmas Open House, Dec. 7 from 4-7 p.m. And, of course, The Arbor Gate is the place to go for plants and all your gardening needs. “We have those plants that are easy to grow, but hard to find,” says Welch. New Bungalow Welcomes In Comfortable Urban Living BY SUSAN FOX

W

hen you have a winner, as do Paula Johnson and Laura Menefree — owners of a thoughtfully constructed new Houston Heights bungalow — it becomes evident that having the right team in place is paramount. Menefree says their first team pick was the architect. Antonio Flamenco at INsite Architecture designed their second home on Lake Conroe seven years ago. Crediting him with knowing what they liked and how to make their city home “different,” they were not disappointed with his presentation. INsite also understood the sensitivities and restrictions of the designated historical district where Menefree and Johnson planned to build. The firm’s understanding of how to build new in an older neighborhood proved important, since the Houston Archeological and Historical Commission had to approve the plans before construction could begin. The plans then were submitted to three builders for bids. Gabriel Home Builders won their confidence. Menefree and Johnson liked that the company had previously built in the Heights, and they felt comfortable knowing the builders have their office in the neighborhood. The interior departs from the traditional bungalow floorplan. Its openness suits the homeowners’ active lifestyle -- entertaining friends and family. Interior Designer Laura Umansky set out to furnish the home comfortably and for easy living.

Quincy, a long-haired dachshund, perches on the sofa top, ready to mingle and party with guests. The upholstered console with decorative nailhead and complementary cube seating provides an area from which to serve. The moveable cubes also can be taken elsewhere in the room – or wherever guests want to sit.

“In a custom build situation, clear communication about the budget and transparency on the costs during the building process is critical,” says Menefree. “You’ve got to have a team you can trust implicitly.” The final member of their team — referred to them by Jeannine Nuzzi, owner of Gabriel Home Builders — was Laura Umansky,

principal of the Laura U Design Studio. “Jeannine gave us several names, and we interviewed all of them. We knew Laura would be the one to exceed our expectations,” says Menefree. According to Umansky, the directive from Menefree and Johnson was straightforward. They wanted a “soft contemporary urban home.” They asked the designers to focus special attention

To the left of the entry is a separate dining room that fronts the house and features a glass-front, walk-in wine cellar. In all the main living areas Umansky and her colleagues focused much attention on creating spaces suited for entertaining. “Laura and Paula wanted large-scale chairs in comfortable fabrics placed in the dining room so that guests could enjoy a meal and then linger for as long as desired. The living room also was furnished to seat easily six or more guests. Of course, the bar stools at the kitchen’s eating bar easily turn to be part of the living room congregation. “We have learned that people always gather in or around the

HELLO. I’M STERLING. Pleased to make your acquaintance. I’m aware that we’ve only just met, but frankly I’m in a bit of a pickle concerning where I’ll be staying when I return from vacation here at HSPCA. I’ve heard rumors that you have a lovely manse and several top-notch comfy purses that a lovely diminuitive lady – such as myself – would find most appealing. Certainly I’m not at the point of desperation in my search, but I am impressed with you. Shall we meet soon to discuss details of our future endeavours? I just know we’ll become the best of friends. See you soon. ID# 228031

It’s the Holiday Fragrance of Fresh Cut Trees COURTESY OF CORNELIUS-CALLOWAY NURSERY

Some people believe it just isn’t Christmas without the homey aroma of a fresh cut Christmas tree in the house. Lots will fill with a variety of selections, and the tradition of tree shopping typically begins just after Thanksgiving. Cornelius Nursery showcases some of the freshest ones in the Houston area. Here are some tips from the nursery located on Dairy Ashford at Voss Road: How do you choose the best tree for your home and family? • Before selecting a tree, be sure you know what size (height and width) you need. • Run a branch through your fist: The needles should not come off easily. • Bend the outer branches; they should be pliable. If they are brittle and snap easily, the tree is too dry. • All trees should receive a fresh cut to the trunk and immediately be placed in a water-reservoir stand. How do you care for your tree? • The single most important tip for freshness is to keep water in the stand at all times. Check several times each day! A tree can use up to one gallon of water daily! • Keep trees away from sources of heat (fireplaces, heaters, heat vents, direct sunlight). • Lowering the room temperature will slow the drying process. • The use of lights that produce low heat, such as miniature lights, will reduce drying of the tree. Why real Christmas Trees are a benefit to the environment? • Real trees are a renewable, recyclable resource. • There are close to 15,000 farms growing Christmas Trees in the U.S., and over 100,000 people are employed full or part-time in the industry. 78 house& home | November 2013 | www.houseandhomeonline. com

• There are about 350,000 aces in production for growing Christmas Trees in the U.S., much of it preserving green space. • Growing Christmas Trees provides a habitat for wildlife. • Christmas Trees remove dust and pollen from the air. • Artificial trees will last for six years in your home, but for centuries in a landfill. What are some fresh cut Christmas tree variety options? Noble Fir• Our Noble Firs are grown by Bear Canyon Tree Farm in the foothills of Washington State’s Cascade Mountains. • Their Noble Firs are grown high up in the mountains where they receive over 60 inches of rainfall annually and receive plenty of frost insuring the trees become full dormant before harvest. • Noble Firs have soft blue-green needles on evenly spaced strong branches that are perfect for heavy ornaments. • They also have a pleasant mild fir scent.

Douglas Fir• Our Douglas Firs also are grown by the Bear Canyon Tree Farm in Washington State. • They present a dense, bushy shape and fine soft green needles. • They also have a distinctive pine-like scent that lasts throughout the entire Christmas season. Fraser Firs• Our Fraser Firs come from the family-owned Cartner Christmas Tree Farm in the Blue Mountains of North Carolina. • The needles are shiny dark-green with two silvery-white bands on the lower surface. • Generally a narrower tree for rooms where space is a premium. • Fragrant aroma.
