THE KITCHEN ISN'T WHAT IT USED TO BE NEITHER ARE WE.
EDITOR’S NOTE
When I was a youngster,
The lifestyles and preferences of today’s consumer have inspired us to reimagine the kitchen. With innovations like the first Hands-free Autofill water dispenser, the first dishwasher with 102 cleaning jets and a clean modern appearance, the GE kitchen is more intelligent, intuitive and beautiful than ever. l geappliances.com

reimagining home
one of my very favorite things to do during the holiday season was to go to Joske’s, a department store in San Antonio. My father’s parents still lived in the Alamo City during that time. My younger sister (no brother; he came later.) and I would get all dressed up in our prettiest twirlaround dresses and head out to visit Santa at Joske’s. How fun! And what great memories now! But the real delight greeted you out on the sidewalks. The store’s big display windows -- transformed each season into a holiday wonderland – overflowed with sensory delights, including whistling trains that circled around beautiful Christmas trees, white snowflakes fluttering downward, twinkling lights, carolers, and other such fun. Long gone are those times, those “Miracle on 34th Street” type of memories. What made me conjure up my memories is our cover this month. Bering’s Hardware always greets the holiday season with music, glitzy décor, food and coffee samples, and a bustling atmosphere. It’s fun to browse there, but I always do much more than look. I buy. Can’t help it…it’s all so fun, so lovely.
If you haven’t been, take time to visit. They are located at 3900 Bissonnet St. and at 6102 Westheimer. Buying from a locally owned store also offers rewards to us all. Two extraordinarily talented women – Helen Stroud and Anita Joyce – have inspired me to celebrate the holidays in ways that are memorable and stressfree. I give thanks to their willingness to decorate their homes a bit earlier than planned, and for inviting us in for a visit. Enjoy these two different spreads within. November is always our holiday issue. And it is my joy to wish you and yours a wonderful season. Warmly, Susan (with Sam & Casey)

MAKE YOUR YARD OR GARDEN
COME ALIVE WITH TOPIARIES TIPS TO HELP GET YOUR STARTED ON CREATING YOUR OWN Wouldn’t a Texas Longhorn look great in your yard? Or perhaps a giraffe? Or maybe a spiral or a star or even an obelisk? Anything is possible with a living sculpture or topiary. Topiaries are the process of training live perennial plants to cling to a shape and clipping foliage or twigs to maintain that design and form. They have been three-dimensional additions to hedges and landscapes since the Roman times, with ancient descriptions of figurines and animals mentioned in 1st century writings. Modern topiaries were inspired in the 1960s, when California-based Disneyland decorated its theme parks with hedges shaped as Disney cartoon characters, formed on cages and covered with foliage. In Houston, topiaries can flourish most of the year. They 20 house& home | November 2016 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
can be trained to grow in forms (balls, spirals, pom-poms or cones) or onto rust-resistant steel frames, stuffed with sphagnum moss for the growing medium and covered in plants that thrive in the hot, damp climate. Or, they can be shaped by skilled plant artisans who clip and contour branches into specific forms. According to Clyde Reynolds, who crafts the topiaries sold at The Arbor Gate nursery in Houston, his creations are all grown from tropical evergreens called Eugenia Globulus, which grows vertical and has been hybridized to maintain its height. “These plants love the sun, love the humidity and love water,” says Reynolds. “But once it gets below 32 degrees, they must be protected or brought indoors.”
21
If someone purchases a 3-gallon topiary by Reynolds, that plant will not grow higher than its 3- to 4-foot height. A plant in a 10-gallon pot will stay 7 feet tall. His topiaries are hand cut and clients who buy them can maintain the exact shape and pattern by trimming new growth as it appears. Another recommended plant for topiaries in Houston is the fig ivy, which quickly produces small green leaves that cling to the moss. It is a disease-resistant plant that grows well in sunny or shady locations. Boston ivy, English ivy or periwinkles can be used as well, along with other evergreen, woody plants with small leaves or needles. Select plants that grow fast, with dense foliage and develop in a compact manner. The key to a long lasting topiary is maintenance. Topiaries prefer to be kept moist and should be watered from the top down. Never let its “feet” soak in standing water, however. Feed the plant monthly with a 10-10-10 water-soluble, balanced plant fertilizer, Reynolds says. If
22 house& home | November 2016 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
there are signs of webs, rinse the plant with water and then apply a pesticide for the intruder. Rinsing also helps keep the leaves clean. If the plant is in a container and it outgrows its pot and becomes root-bound, carefully remove it from its existing home, put fresh soil in the new, larger container and place the root ball in the soil. Cover with more organic matter and water. Indoor topiaries are possible, too, but keep them away from windows facing west or south – too hot and too much sun for them. Choose filtered locations or windows with a northern or eastern exposure. As new chutes, vines and leaves emerge from the center of the plant, clip them back or weave them into the existing form. Remove any weak or dying branches. Pruning is necessary to keep the topiary fresh looking and true to its form. Topiaries – big and small – can add interest to any garden, entrance or patio with its creative three-dimensional character, making these spaces living sculpture gardens.
23
HOW TO MAKE A TOPIARY 1. Determine if you want an animal or abstract design, as it will help you decide what plant to use to create it. For animals, consider more dense foliage. For smaller objects, select a smaller leaf plant. Note: You don’t want to overwhelm the form. Hint: rosemary, lavender or thyme plants offer a pleasant fragrance as well as colorful blooms.

Delicate linen sachets offer a yester-year ambiance -- a holiday remembrance. Photo courtesy of Antiquestyle.blogspot.com.
WELL-WORN ANTIQUE LINENS GET BETTER WITH AGE As Thanksgiving approaches, Houston hosts are musing on how to set a festive table and keep their holiday guests comfortable. Antique linens— whether napkins, hand towels, or bedding— lend an heirloom quality to your home, making it feel warm and welcoming for family and friends. “The tablecloth is the canvas for everything else you’re going to put down,” says Tara Richardson, owner of The Borrowed Flea, a local vintage rental company.“Many antique table linens are beautifully crafted and the cotton only gets better with age.” For less formal moments, Richardson uses a colorful cotton base, and lace or crochet overlays.
If you stumble across linens with minor flaws, don’t hestitate to buy them if you like the style. These antique linen lampshades are available from Etsy.com.

“Decorating a table is like getting dressed. The linens are your clothing, and you accessorize with candleholders and beautiful china,” she says. Phyllis Tucker at Phyllis Tucker Antiques, who specializes in antique silver and linens knows the ins and outs of etiquette when preparing for a holiday feast. She’s even set a table for Queen Elizabeth II. “For years it was considered proper etiquette to use a fine Damask tablecloth at dinner,” Tucker says. “These are available now and people like them because they look beautiful and are easy to care for." It’s also likely that vintage linens are higher quality than newer materials on the market today. Following an economic downturn in 2008, much of the mill equipment in Ireland, Belgium, and Holland – famous for

linens --was sold to China. The fabric-making process there is different and results in a less expensive product with shorter fibers, less sheen and durability. Richardson suggests checking out thrift stores, garage and estate sales, Craigslist, and Ebay for the older pieces. Here you’ll find a great mix of textiles— from fine linen to acrylic and polyester— but if you have the will to hunt, you may find something truly great. Here’s a tip: When shopping for table linens, look for embroidery from Madera, Belgian or English lace, and Irish linen. Also, don’t be deterred in you fall in love with a piece that’s flawed. “I’ve repurposed damaged linens as kitchen towels or hand towels or even body towels, depending on the size,” Richardson says. “With the Etsy world, I’ve seen people get crafty with handkerchiefs: curtains are made out of them, including bunting, banners . . . everything. A lot of those, especially the silk ones, are little pieces of art.”

If you stumble across a monogrammed piece, even if the letters aren’t right, don’t hesitate to buy it, Richardson says. The practiced picker once purchased a beautiful linen bed sheet marked “MG,” which had no personal connection for her. “What attracted me to it was the quality of the linen. You’re not going to monogram something that’s cheap and flimsy,” Richardson says. Using antique linens in the modern world is all about creativity. “You can use an elegant tea cloth in the middle of a dining room table like a centerpiece and put something on it,” Tucker says. Or, bring back the elegance of days gone by and give an old piece new life. “It used to be when ladies had parties, they would put out beautiful, embroidered linen hand towels in the bathroom for guests to dry their hands on,” Tucker says. “Lots of people collect them now, but they aren’t just

Richardson says. Methods for laundering depend on the fabric. “Damask tablecloths can be washed in the washing machine. Napkins are easy enough to wash by hand, just like undies,” Tucker explains. “The main thing is— don’t put them away dirty, ever.” If you care for them, antique linens can live and look lavish for generations to come. “Any natural fiber has a long life ahead of it, if you take care of it properly,” Richardson adds. “You don’t have to baby it, just be conscious of its age and those fibers will last you easily another 50 years.”

“Most cookware vendors offer promotions for the holiday season,” says Joy Nguyen of Chantal Cookware. “Some offer specially packaged deals and many offer extra savings for Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyper Monday.” If you’re looking to streamline your kitchen with a new cookware set, Le Creuset is famously sturdy and stylish. “It’s one of our most popular lines,” says Parisa Reith, marketing manager for Bering’s Hardware in Houston. In terms of what’s trending, Reith said old favorites are seeing a resurgence. “We are seeing more stainless steel for traditional pots and pans;ww some copper is still preferred. Enamel cast iron is popular, and believe it or not, grandma’s cast iron, like The Lodge, is still a best seller of ours,” she adds. For younger generations, it’s all about non-toxic kitchenware. “Healthier cooking surfaces, such as enamel-on-carbon steel and nickel-free stainless, are appealing to Millenials,” Nguyen says. When making a new purchase, try to find a balance between price and quality. “There is usually a trade-off here so try to find the best value for your own needs. This can often be found in stainless cookware with encapsulated bottoms instead of paying more for multi-ply cookware,” Nguyen says. “You definitely want the best cooking surface one can afford with no hot spots and excellent heat distribution. Comfortable handles are a must as well as attractiveness that will last through many uses.” Remember: it’s a wise move to try before you buy. Frying an egg won’t be possible, but make sure to test the weight to make sure it’s not too heavy to be practical or too light to be sturdy.

NATURE Offers HOLIDAY INSPIRATION Popular, Local Blogger Shares Decorating Tips By Sandra Cook
Houston resident, design blogger and book author Anita Joyce says she lets nature inspire holiday decorating. “I like to take a natural approach for the holidays -- I use a lot of greenery,” says Joyce. And I gather ideas and materials our farm, Cedar Hill, located near Round Top, especially bits of cedar.” Joyce likes to use scraps of real tree branches for holiday accents, but also likes to decorate with wreaths and trees made from sturdy wire-and-bristle bottle brush material, which offers a classic, vintage look that doesn’t go out of style. She also utilizes the enduring look of real, preserved boxwood wreaths and balls. “These are very versatile and can be used to decorate your home year round. This year, I’m working with lots of square boxwood wreaths. They last a long time, another classic look that’s always in style,” she says. For an inexpensive and unique touch, Joyce suggests dressing up the boxwood wreaths and balls with different colorful fabric ribbons for each season. “And, you can recycle last year’s ribbon for your gift wrapping,” she says. Joyce also likes to add a touch of Christmas to beautiful pieces around her home, such as mirrors, vases or large candlesticks, which is budget friendly and time efficient as well. She also likes to turn up the seasonal color with candles.
RIGHT: Anita Joyce likes to mix new finds with old vintage pieces. The aged trophy urns add a bit of personality to the table when used as flower and plant containers.

, THIS YEAR S TRENDS As far as what’s fun in stores this season, Joyce says she loves the small wooden signs with painted holiday words, such as “Holy Night” or “Merry & Bright. ” She also favors small light-up objects, such as a vintage-style toy truck with a tree on top, and her N-O-E-L letters. These are beautiful and festive both day and night. “Don’t be afraid to do something different or think outside the box,” she says. Go ahead and mix it up.

Another popular trend this year, according to Joyce, is the use of antlers, also known as deer shed, which goes along with her love of taking inspiration from nature. “If you don’t live on a ranch and can’t access real deer antlers, you can find realistic fake ones in décor stores,” she says. Silhouettes of deer are also on trend. Find your own style by determining what mood you want your home to evoke. She likes a balance of light and dark pieces, adding pops of color here and there. 46 house& home | November 2016 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

“I definitely lean towards a nature-forward theme for most of my holiday décor,” says Joyce. “Lately, I’ve been utilizing plaids and rustic accents that evoke a cabin-in-the-woods feel.” For both fun and tradition, Joyce places large colorful Santa pillows on a slipcovered French settee.

DRAWN TO DESIGN Anita Joyce was always attracted to art and interior design, but was steered toward an engineering career early on by her father. After she married and soon became a stay-at-home mom, she tried her hand at photography, which led her to blogging. Grouping Christmas trees or other objects together on a tabletop achieves a greater decorating effect than placing one here and one over there. 50 house& home | November 2016 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

“Blogging brought all of my favorite things together: styling, décor, photography and writing,” says Joyce. She started her blog in 2011, after a trip to France lit up her love of French antiques and décor. “I certainly made missteps and mistakes at first, but I kept going,” she says. Today her home and her designs have been featured in 17 magazines. and her book, “French Accents,” was released in September 2015. CREATING CHRISTMAS o
Shop Owner Shares Her Holiday Recipe — for family get togethers, food and maintaining tradition By Marsha Canright Creating a magical Christmas with spirit, décor, and tradition doesn’t require extravagant spending, grueling labor, or even gourmet cooking. Helen Stroud — owner of the shop, Olivine, in Rice Village — is a woman known for her entertaining panache. She says the secret to sparkling holiday parties is this: keep it easy. “It’s the little things that make the holidays special, whether you’re celebrating with family or friends. So, remember, if you’re overwhelmed and exhausted, you can’t enjoy others and they can’t enjoy you,” she says. For simple delights, she recalls her Louisiana childhood. For her, the holidays began with hot cocoa topped with tiny marshmallows in a Santa mug. When her children were young, she made cocoa in Santa mugs for all five of them, and she plans to do the same for grandchildren. It’s a little thing, but a tradition that each family member loves. This year, the Stroud clan — which often includes some or all or her six siblings and their families — will celebrate the holidays in their newly acquired historic Galveston home, an 1886 Italianate villa with wide-screened porches and 14-foot ceilings upstairs and down. Their re-imagined vintage-styled kitchen has a 1939-era, restored Chambers stove with art deco feet and two ovens — just right for baking Christmas goodies. It’s truly the heart of a family home.

Sitting at the head of the table in back is Izzie, the Stroud’s Shetland Sheepdog, surrounded by her friends. The table was designed and built by daughter Catherine Stroud, who used reclaimed materials. The festive decor includes a fun mix of new and vintage items.
59
Izzie, the hostess with the mostess, even has her own Facebook page: www.facebook.com/IzzieStroud . . . the vintage-style kitchen is shown below.
THE DÉCOR
Stroud is expecting a full house for the Christmas festivities, which, in addition to her family, will include a host of friends. So for her, hospitality is a hot topic. How do you make the holidays special while adhering to the low-stress keep-it-simple philosophy? Three basic rules: Plan ahead; buy ready-made or freeze goodies in advance; and ask others to participate. 60 house& home | November 2016 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
You can’t go wrong by using traditional red and green, Stroud says. She plucks lots of greenery from the outdoors and from her friend’s Norfolk pine to spruce up both tables and chairs. A hardy evergreen propagated from an island in the Pacific, the Norfolk Island Pine, though not really a pine, was one of the few species of tree to survive Hurricane Ike 2008. It’s a fitting coastal adaptation of the northern tradition of Christmas greenery. For Stroud, there are only two must-haves in her holiday pallet. First is a Christmas tree: large or small, real or fake, strung with white or colored lights, but always adorned with shiny ornaments. The second: she must have “crackers” for the Christmas Day table. Crackers are a cardboard tube of brightly decorated paper with a prize or candy and a paper crown inside. When either end of the cracker is pulled, it makes a popping sound and opens to reveal the goodies inside. Crackers are a British tradition but festive and fun for a lively Christmas dinner. They're available at Tuesday Morning, World Market and a host of other stores.

Helen Stroud’s daughters, Catherine (left) and Courtenay (far right) help granddaugher Kennedi and friend Olivia decorate gingerbread houses.
“If you do only one thing, it has to be the tree. But then, after you take that step, you may want to add some simple decorations – like green branches or red apples or poinsettias or big red bows,” she adds. Just seeing the tree and the lights with glitzy ornaments sets the stage for a memorable Christmas. Add the citrus and cinnamon smells and the sounds of favorite Christmas music, and suddenly, you've got that magic zing. Want more good smells to heighten the holiday senses? A pine bough or two, or oranges with cloves create an inviting and warm aroma. Cocoa with real whipped cream or marshmallows also offers its own chocolaty fragrance.
TRADITIONS When her family gathers this Christmas, everyone will get new pajamas on Christmas Eve – the funnier, the better. There will be cheese straws in Christmas tins, the aforementioned cocoa, and gingerbread houses coated with her grandmother’s recipe for Seven Minute Frosting, along with plates and plates of decorated Christmas cookies. Her tip for making gingerbread houses: The key is to buy a 62 house& home | November 2016 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
kit or a ready-made house and let children do the decorating, Stroud says. The kits are available at most grocery stores during the holiday season. After the gingerbread walls and roof are frosted, Stroud turns over candy canes, gumdrops, peppermints, pretzels, M&Ms and red hots to young artists and lets them turn the house into a Christmas candy dream. Music will be nonstop Christmas tunes, courtesy of Pandora, and it will include a wide variety of classical, traditional Christmas carols, Frank Sinatra and even Nina Simone. Anyone can sing along without fear of too much embarrassment. “On Christmas morning, we all have breakfast together: sausage-egg and/or cheese casserole, biscuits, fruit and mimosas, now that they are old enough. Only after a longdrawn out late breakfast, do we open presents," she says. The family gave up massive stacks of presents at the request of their adult children years ago because everybody already had so much. They concentrate on what might be particularly meaningful to each person. “Now everything goes in the stockings. I use giant stockings – easy enough to make from vintage material – and

these are filled with special items for each person,” Stroud says. A devout animal advocate, Stroud’s household also includes a notable dog, cat and bird entourage. Sometimes her children give her charitable gifts — like adopting an elephant one year and a chimpanzee the next as a way to support the care of these animals. Another favorite present: pet supplies that were then donated to the animal shelter. “My children tell me that when they were young, they loved the anticipation on Christmas morning. We made them wait in their rooms and they couldn't go in the room where Santa left presents until we got up and started moving around. We did let them get their stockings and go up to their rooms,” she says.
FOOD “People do like to eat -- good food is the heart of entertaining -- but my advice is don’t make it harder than you have to,” Stroud says. “Let other people pitch in; make it collaborative,” she adds. 64 house& home | November 2016 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
Stroud’s husband, Dan, takes pride in slow- roasting a freerange turkey stuffed with apples along with a plain but tasty cornbread dressing in a separate pan. She makes a simple Crabmeat Mornay with toast points as a nod to her Louisiana heritage. Two of her daughters like to cook and they’ll be bringing baked goods to share. In the freezer, there are Ziplock bags of their own pre-made daiquiri and whiskey sour mixes, which are easy to make ahead and the alcohol prevents them from freezing, Stroud says. She has a new, favorite cookbook: Julia Reed's "South: Spirited Entertaining and High-Style Fun All Year Long," so there may be new dishes to add for fun. "This is a wonderful cookbook. Buy this book!" she says. For Christmas entertaining, Stroud says you can’t miss with certain foods: deviled eggs, rotisserie chicken salad from the grocery store with crackers, nice cheeses. One of her favorite Christmas parties in recent years ended with martinis and a printout of words to well-loved Christmas carols.
65
Granddaughter Kennedi places holiday books in the neighborhood’s “smallest library” -- all inserted for sharing with others. Their home below...
“After a few martinis, we went caroling in the neighborhood. People came out on their porches. Others sang along. People seemed happy and truly glad for the music. All of the sudden, the magic of Christmas was all around.”
Dan's Slow Roasted Turkey 18- pound (or larger) free-range turkey, washed inside out and patted dry Cut up two or three apples and put in the cavity. Rub the outside of the turkey with olive oil and put lots of salt and pepper on all sides. Cook at 350 degrees (15 minutes per pound), about nine hours. Baste about every half hour with juices. Cover with an aluminum foil for the last 45 minutes.
Crabmeat Mornay with Toast Melt one stick of butter with one bunch of chopped scallions, including the green parts. Stir in 2 tablespoons of flour, 2 cups of heavy cream and about 2 cups of grated Gruyere cheese over low heat. Add dry sherry to taste, with cayenne pepper and salt. Stir in one pound of jumbo lump crabmeat. Toast slice of Pepperidge Farm Bread for toast points. Garnish with fresh parsley. Rich beyond belief. 66 house& home | November 2016 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
Josephine’s 7-Minute Frosting 1-cup sugar 1/4 tsp salt 1/2 tsp cream of tartar 2 egg whites 3 tablespoons water 1 tsp vanilla Combine all ingredients except vanilla in a stainless steel heavy-bottomed pan. Place over medium-low heat and beat with an electric hand mixer constantly for 5-7 minutes or until icing is fluffy and forms stiff peaks when beaters are removed. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Makes perfect frosting for gingerbread houses and Christmas cookies.

GARDENING
GROWING YOUR OWN FLOWER SHOP By LINDA GAy
Larkspur 74 house& home | November 2016 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
How would you like to grow a garden of beautiful flowers that you could cut and arrange anytime you wanted? Living in zone 9A, we have two seasons: warm/hot and cool/cold, which allows us an expansive flower palette to plant, grow and bloom. The fall or beginning of the cool season gets us excited to have cooler temperatures with little to no humidity. This gets us thinking about our spring garden, which requires planning and planting now. Now is the perfect time to plant those spring flowering naturalizing bulbs. What is a naturalizing bulb? The term naturalizing means they return season after season with increased bulb size, producing more flowers. Some of my favorite spring bloomers are the fragrant Campernelle, Golden Dawn, and Grand Primo Narcissus. With fall planting, the foliage starts to emerge from the soil in December or January. The best Daffodils for our area are Fortune and Ice Follies. Do you know the difference between a Daffodil and a Narcissus? A Daffodil has a single bloom and Narcissus is a cluster of flowers. Irises are another favorite of the gardener and the cut-flower arranger. Dutch Iris are grown from bulbs and planted in the fall. They come in many different colors and return year after year. Louisiana Irises are perennials and grow from spreading rhizomes in well-drained or boggy soils. Oriental Lilies have a wonderful fragrance that titillates our strongest sense, our sense of smell.

Students in nature floral design class.
A familiar smell can often take us back to a special time evoking a special memory. The olfactory cells found inside our nose are directly connected to two separate destinations in our brain. The first destination is the frontal cortex where we consciously recognize what the scent smells like and the second destination is the subconscious part of our brain that deals with our emotion, motivation and past memories. Planting fragrant flowers and sharing that special moment and scent with our children and grandchildren creates a memory of us that lasts long after we are gone. Stargazer and White Stargazer are wonderful Oriental lilies that return season after season. Another hybrid lily, a cross between the Oriental and Asiatic lily, called Triumphator is very fragrant and grows 6 feet tall and does not need staking. Everyone should find these bulbs and plant some this fall. Cool season flowers that complement the spring flowering bulbs are Snapdragons, Stock, Poppy and Larkspur. You can also add some edible flowers to the garden, such as Violas (Johnny Jump Up) and Calendula (Pot Marigold). Flowers make us feel special and play a role in celebrating special holidays when families come together. Flower color also plays a role in our emotional reaction. For example, the color red is passionate, aggressive and important, while the color Orange is playful, energetic and vibrant. The color yellow is happy, friendly and offers warning while green feels natural, stable, and prosperous. The color blue is tranquil, trustworthy and inviting. Purple offers the feeling of luxury, mystery and romance. So the next time you pick out something to wear, the color you choose is the emotion you feel at that moment! So if you are ready to learn more about growing and creating nature inspired floral designs from your garden, check out the classes at: www.agardenforcutting.com for dates and times. HI, MY NAME IS LIZZIE! I’m a 10-month-old Shepherd mix who was rescued by the Houston SPCA’s 24-hour injured animal rescue ambulance with some hind-leg lameness. Fortunately, the lameness resolved, but I injured my tail and had to have it amputated. I still have a nub that I can wag when I get really excited. I’m told that I’m a friendly dog who can get nervous in new situations, but I love people and am very gentle. I’m looking for a family that gives me plenty of exercise because I’m young and active. I’ve been at the Houston SPCA since the beginning of August, so I’m really hoping to find a home soon.
