s I was walking the other day, invigorated by the 60degree temps and warmed by a clear blue sky filled with rays of bright sunshine, I caught a whiff of a pleasant, very familiar scent in the air. Nostalgia swept over me when I realized that wonderful aroma came drifting from a neighbor’s chimney top: A fireplace with lighted logs was keeping folks cozy inside. We’re embracing fall with open arms in this issue, starting with “Fire & Function,” which presents realistic and entertaining options for today’s log styles — such as those shown on the cover by the Real Fyre Collection from RH Peterson Co. We expand on that topic with a tribute to Frank Lloyd Wright, who made fireplaces works of art and integral components of houses he designed. In fact, look for our tributes to his 150th birthday celebration with articles on Wright’s color and fabric selections, as well as furniture creations, and on his structures in his home state of Wisconsin to his only Houston project. You’ll appreciate again how Wright changed the way we build, live and design. Fall and winter mean back-to-back holidays all the way to the New Year, translating to happy gatherings of families and friends. “Spruce Up” offers great DIY ways to get ready for everyone, as well as contacts for jobs requiring professional assistance.

FREDERICKSBURG DECKS THE HALLS Head to the hills for these 60th annual events on Dec. 2 in this charming Hill Country town. You’ll find the festive day a great way to shop for one-of-a-kind items, visit homes decorated for the season and, of course, get into the holiday spirit. This year’s self-guided home tour, set 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and sponsored by Latigo, features two 1800s historic houses built by German stonemasons, plus five homes reflective of the Hill Country style of architecture. All are decorated for the season, with one house showcasing German Christmas ornaments and another with a tree adorned with more than 1,300 ornaments! Musicians provide entertainment at several of the tour sites. A booklet with a map and full descriptions of each home is provided to tour participants. FIRE & FUNCTION Today’s Gas Logs Present Realistic and Entertaining Options By Mary Chavoustie
A
design glitch can occur with even the most creative geniuses, and Frank Lloyd Wright was no exception. A good example would be one of the fireplaces inside Wright’s architectural masterpiece known as Wingspread, the 14,000square-foot Wisconsin home just outside of Racine created for Herbert F. Johnson Jr., then president of S.C. Johnson & Son. For the man who many consider the greatest American architect of all time, fireplaces or hearths were an essential part of the design; they were, in Wright’s words, “the psychological center of the home.” In Wingspread, there are four fireplaces on the first floor and a fifth vertical fireplace on the mezzanine level. The vertical design was created for 8-foot birch logs to be able to stand upright, leaning against the back interior of the fireplace, no doubt in anticipation of a slow, maintenance-free burn. Unfortunately, upon first lighting, the logs burned at the base, only to fall, embers and all, onto the adjoining floor. The family’s quick thinking to toss the burning logs onto the back porch alleviated a possible disaster, resulting in the fireplace becoming decorative rather than functional. 22 house& home | November 2017 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
TODAY’S FIREPLACES Real Fyre’s Contemporary Series, complete with spheres, geo shapes and river rock designs, would have been Wright’s perfect “psychological center.” Available in “Epic Black,” “Graystone,” “Terracotta,” “Ivory” and “Santa Fe,” the nontraditional gas logs partner with a dual-pan burner system that best reflects the mix of flame and form. Those looking for another clean alternative to wood have the option of RH Peterson’s Fyre Glass for a more contemporary design or even a modern farmhouse setting. The product is fire-tested to 1,200 degrees without melting or discoloring and is available in a variety of colors. Wright chose “Cherokee Red” brick from the Streator Brick Co. and bands of Kasota limestone for the birch log fireplace at Wingspread. Today, hand-carved fireplaces from natural stone offer versatility and endurance. Cantera stone, made from volcanic tuffs, sandstones and limestone, can resist moisture and humidity and can equally serve within any outdoor setting.

Our Coastal Plains ONLY TIME WILL TELL THE EFFECTS OF FLOODS ON REGIONAL VEGETATION BY KATHLEEN PHILLIPS Unlike people and animals, plants can’t evacuate when threatening weather approaches, and long tenures in floodwaters can take a toll. As water recedes, landscapes — and the entire coastal plains — also will need to be watched for signs of stress. “A little bit of rain is not too bad, but too much rain can be detrimental to the health of any plant,” says Stephen Brueggerhoff, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service horticulture agent in Brazoria County. “These were extraordinary circumstances, so at this point, it is really just a matter of waiting to see what the impact is.”

ROOT ROT Brueggerhoff says soil saturation is key. “For perennial plants, what we really are concerned with are saturated soils that create conditions for root rot,” he says. “When the rain saturates the soils causing a collection of water, plants may be standing or submerged in water.” Once saturated, there are not many options to help perennial plants, he says, except to watch for signs of stress. Stress reveals itself in plants through discoloration, often as yellowing or purplish leaves. “The roots of all plants need oxygen through the soil,” Brueggerhoff explains. “Once the soils get saturated, that creates an anaerobic environment where the roots are not getting proper oxygenation within the soils.”
SHRUBS & TREES Woody species such as shrubs and trees take longer to show stress, he notes. “They often don’t tell us too quickly what is going on with them, as far as decline. Sometimes we will not see a tree or

shrub responding to those kinds of environmental conditions for six months to a year,” Brueggerhoff says. He described an ash tree that stood in four feet of water near his home for two days. “The water receded quickly, so two days of saturation probably is not going to hurt that tree,” he says. “But if we have plants that are under saturation for up to a week, for some plants it can cause a decline in the long run. Sometimes those kinds of conditions can be an entry point for other pathogens to grow. Drones & You FLYING ROBOTS HELP MAP POST-HURRICANE DAMAGE BY MARSHA CANRIGHT If you see flying robots circling above you in the Houston sky, don’t call your doctor about hallucinations just yet. Small airborne drones are part of the massive effort by insurers to investigate residential damages in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. These unmanned aircraft can closely examine areas that are difficult for humans to access safely, according to Mike Winn, chief executive officer of DroneDeploy, a drone-mapping software company. Imagine that an insurance surveyor climbs on your roof to detail damages and almost falls through. In addition to endangering the person, it could also delay your insurance claim. “If the surveyor was flying a commercial drone, he or she would receive results in minutes, instead of months. It would

cost less and would pose less of a personal hazard,” Winn says. Because the recent floods affected more than 30,000 properties with at least $11 billion in property damage in Harris and adjoining counties, Winn says surveyors are obviously overwhelmed and in need of high-tech tools to complete assessments in a timely manner.
DRONES IN ACTION Mapping disaster sites for insurance companies is only one use for these tiny flying machines. While drone development is still in its infancy, multiple companies in the United States — including Amazon, UPS, the military and telecommunications firms — are investing in innovative applications, including structural inspections, storm tracking, weather forecasting, mail delivery, geographic mapping, traffic flow planning, sports photography and monitoring and modeling construction sites. Drones provide a quick method to gather and analyze data, navigate debris and help deploy rescue teams after disasters.

REAL ESTATE MATTERS While some drones investigate and gather information on damages, Lily Jang and Nick Cadena others are producing remarkable visuals of Houston real estate to show potential buyers every aspect of available properties. Lily Jang, a Houston television personality who now owns her own real estate business, uses dramatic drone videos to help her customers explore what’s available in the Houston home market. She also produces “Lily’s List,” a weekend real estate segment on KPRC Channel 2, using drone photography to feature local homes from the $100,000s to multimilliondollar listings. “To me, drone video is so cinematographic,” Jang says. “Drones offer a sense of awe that ground-based photography simply cannot. My photographer, Nick Cadena, gives you a bird's-eye view of the entire property that shows landscaping, pools, fence lines and the home's proximity to amenities, schools and parks.” After the hurricane, Jang has used drone technology to make sure roof damage had been corrected on homes under contract. And in her business, drones help her clients to sell properties. Her best tip for photographers using drones to capture the essence of a home? “When it's a gorgeous sunset, fly that drone around a property and show off how beautiful it would be to sit on that outdoor deck and watch the sun setting,” she says. “People remember what they feel. Make that property feel like home.”

Communicate & Document PREVENT HIGH-STAKE CLAIMS NOW WITH THESE HELPFUL TIPS Now is the time to put into action an effective recovery plan with the aim of minimizing, to the best extent possible, out-of-pocket costs related to hurricane damage and subsequent recovery efforts. Jocelyn Knoll and Diana Parkas, partners at the international law firm Dorsey & Whitney LLP, offer the following advice as rebuilding efforts begin.
COMMUNICATION Communication between owners, contractors, suppliers, etc., is critical to laying the foundation to work together to effectively address any problem. Although you are working in crisis mode with the ultimate goal of getting up and running again as quickly as possible, the fact is that what you say now, in the heat of getting work done and with perhaps with not enough information, matters a lot.

Project participants and other interested parties are listening to what you say now about issues such as what has been damaged, how it was damaged, how much it is going to cost and how long you are going to be delayed. What you say now will set certain expectations at all levels of the project, and those expectations might be difficult to overcome if, down the road, your estimates prove to be low. Communication is key, but accurate as well as timely and consistent communication is what is going to be most effective in recovery and damage mitigation efforts.
CONTRACTURAL RIGHTS & RESPONSIBLITIES Review the project contracts, with a particular focus on any “force majeure” clause, to determine potential rights and responsibilities. In assessing the “force majeure” clause, pay particular attention to what type of recovery the clause provides (schedule relief only or schedule and monetary relief) and any notice requirements. Contractual notice requirements for “force majeure” events are often short, so do not delay — even if you can only provide a basic notice. Also, do not rely upon oral notice. Put it in writing.

Good documentation maximizes claim recovery and minimizes costly after-the-fact costs for reconstruction. Consider creating hurricane-specific cost codes, including cost codes that correlate to any sublimited categories of insurance recovery. For example, most business risk and property policies have categories of costs that, while covered, are subject to sublimits, such as business interruption, debris removal, expediting expenses, off-site storage, pollution cleanup and removal, etc. If you create such cost codes, use them accurately or the effort might do more harm than good.

Review your insurance portfolio. The most likely sources for insurance coverage for construction projects damaged by Harvey and Irma will be builder’s risk insurance, property insurance and marine cargo insurance. Other potential sources of insurance coverage, depending on the circumstances, include professional errors and omissions insurance, commercial general liability insurance and subcontractor default insurance. Of course, the existence and extent of coverage will depend on the language of the policy, so it is important to gather the policies together and review the terms of each in order to maximize potential recovery. And, in order to effectively use the insurance your company has purchased, it is critical to comply with all notice requirements and to keep the insurers informed throughout the recovery process — especially when it comes to having the opportunity to view damage prior to mitigation or recovery efforts.
INTERIM OR FAST FUNDING Consider whether there may be the potential to negotiate a funding agreement or interim payment with affected project participants/insurers to provide an immediate source of funds to commence hurricane recovery and avoid, at least in the short term, disputes regarding what damage/delay was caused by the hurricane and the recovery efforts. If you are looking to negotiate such an arrangement with an insurer, you need to keep the deductible in mind (as it is often a big cost, especially on a builders’ risk claim), as well as whether there is any contractual provision as to which party is responsible for the deductible. Her other tips include: • Don’t be afraid to mix plates and cups from different sets of dishes, as long as the tones blend or complement. • People love favors, especially if they are functional or edible. Consider small, framed photos of each guest instead of place cards, or striped candy canes doubling as napkin rings tied with ribbon. • Dress a table like you dress yourself. Start with something big, like a damask cloth or runner, and then add accessories that reflect your personality. • Wreaths aren’t just for doors. Set that punch bowl in the middle of a fresh or faux holiday wreath at one end of your tablescape. Parade smaller wreaths up and down the table around festive candles…and don’t forget to light the candles before guests arrive.

Built in Walbach, Alsace, France between 1618 and 1648, the house was a gift from the citizens of Alsace to Castroville because of the Alsatian roots of the original immigrants that settled here in 1844. PUMPKIN CHEESECAKE WITH GINGERSNAP CRUST Houston-based Petite Sweets makes this decadent cheesecake for the holidays, but it’s easy to make at home. You can use any cookie for the crust (like graham or chocolate) and serve it with a dollop of whipped cream, instead of a fancy cream cheese frosting, if you prefer. Gingersnap Crust 12 ounces gingersnaps ½ cup pecans, finely chopped 6 tablespoons salted butter, melted 2 tablespoons packed brown sugar Dash of kosher salt In a food processor, grind the gingersnaps until fine. Pour into a bowl and stir in the pecans, melted butter, brown sugar and salt. Press into the bottom and sides of a 10-inch springform pan and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Bake the cookie crust for 10 minutes. Remove from oven and slightly cool before filling. Cheesecake Filling 3 (8-ounce) packages cream cheese, softened 1 1/2 cups sugar 3 eggs, plus 1 egg yolk 2 tablespoons pumpkin spice 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 (15-ounce) can pumpkin puree Combine ingredients in an electric mixer with the paddle attachment and whip until there are no lumps. Pour into the pre-baked crust and bake for 1 hour on a rimmed baking sheet. Remove from the oven and cool for 15 minutes. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 4 hours before slicing. Yield: 8-10 servings

BOERNE For over 30 years, Boerne has kicked off the holiday season with the “Weihnachts Parade,” a lighted night procession on the first Saturday of December. That weekend, “Oma’s Christmas Fair” at the Kendall County Fairgrounds showcases handcrafted items. Then on Dec. 10, “Boerne Market Days” fills the Main Plaza with crafts and music. And on Dec. 9 and 16, stroll the streets of Bethlehem during “Christmas at the Farm,” an event that also includes hayrides, a gingerbread forest and plenty of family fun. www.visitboerne.org

irthdays may come and go, but for some, the remembrances never end. Wisconsin began 2017 with a yearlong celebration honoring the 150th anniversary of the birth of their native son, Frank Lloyd Wright, demonstrating the man that changed the way we build, live and design is far from forgotten. THE WRIGHT PAINT “The Voice of Color” program by PPG Paints™ brings colors that beg to be discovered, allowing easier decision-making for consumers in a variety of formats. PPG has even added color choices that work well for a particular style inspiration as in the architect’s color palette. In celebration of Wright’s 150th birthday, PPG and the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation teamed to recreate the “PPG Paints Frank Lloyd Wright” color palette that is historically accurate to the
original 1955 “Taliesin” color palette of 36 hues prepared for Martin-Senour Paints. “At PPG, we find inspiration everywhere, but especially in nature, just as Wright did,” Dee Schlotter, PPG senior color marketing manager, says in a press release. “Even the colors chosen more than 60 years ago stand strong today and coordinate with modern textiles and materials, a true testament to Wright’s timeless design sense.” PPG’s “Fallingwater®” color palette also debuted this year, featuring the colors used at Wright’s most widely acclaimed work. Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, the conservator of Fallingwater and the surrounding 1,543 acres, authenticated the Wright-inspired palette. Since 2003, PPG Paints has partnered with Western Pennsylvania Conservancy to provide innovative coating and sealing solutions for Fallingwater, what is considered by some as the greatest architectural triumphs of the 20th century. Wright’s signature and favorite color, “Cherokee Red,” is used to coat many of the steel surfaces, while “Covered Wagon” is used for the exterior walls.
THE WRIGHT FURNITURE In 1955, Wright designed three lines of furniture for Heritage Henredon — dining room, bedroom and living room — each stamped with his iconic signature. In fact, the entire November 1955 issue of “House Beautiful” magazine was devoted to Wright’s furniture. Prior to the collaboration, Henredon did not produce upholstery, hence the union with Heritage, an upholstery company. Simple in nature and free of elaborate trim or hardware, the pieces often incorporated geometric combinations. Expandable sofas were featured with triangular seats, while a hexagonal coffee table fit perfectly into the room. Wright’s dining room hutch often doubled as a room divider. Multi-purposing was a common thread, as were his ever-visible geometric designs. Unfortunately, the Heritage Henredon furniture line was unsuccessful, and production was ceased after less than two years.
THE WRIGHT FABRIC A revival of Wright’s geometric-inspired fabric designs was also part of the historic birthday year, a collaboration of F. Schumacher & Co. and the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. Schumacher’s original “Taliesin” line of decorative fabrics and wallpaper included designs hand drawn by Wright for the fabric house in 1955. The 2017 release highlights the original 26 designs plus new patterns, a total of 50 products that include upholstery fabrics, sheers and decorative trims.

Creative director Dara Caponigro discovered Wright’s collection when she joined Schumacher in 2013. “When I first laid eyes on the Frank Lloyd Wright designs in our archive three years ago, it was my dream to bring them back for everyone to enjoy. Anyone who loves design will appreciate their integrity and originality,” says Caponigro in a press release. “They have Mr. Wright’s indelible signature all over them, and marry substance and style in a thoroughly unique way.” The fabrics, all part of Schumacher’s Applied Architecture Collection, are available only to the trade through Schumacher.

he chance to own a house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright rarely comes along, particularly in Houston. Yet, to have the opportunity for the same house to become available again, and this time, beautifully refurbished to Wright’s original 1955 design, is even more of a rarity. Add to that uniqueness, an 8,000-square-foot-plus, six-bedroom and seven-bath addition, meticulously orchestrated by the owners and an award-winning architect firm, and you have a new paragraph for the history books. William L. Thaxton Jr. was a successful insurance executive in 1954 with a keen eye for property. What is now Bunker Hill Village looked quite different back then, an area that in December of that year became incorporated with a mayorcouncil form of city government, establishing restrictions to prohibit businesses. What better location for Thaxton to consider what would become his home than a wooded plot of land that would marry with the Wright structure, each unobtrusive to the other? 64 house& home | November 2017 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
THE THAXTON HOUSE The Thaxton House at 12020 Tall Oaks St. is Usonian, a terminology created by the architect defining the affordable homes he would design and make available to middle-income families. Garages would be replaced with carports, while formal dining rooms would be dismissed and reduced in size and folded into a more generous living area. Private spaces such as baths and sleeping areas would be small. And room for a housekeeper would be nonexistent or in the case of the Thaxton House, almost miniscule. Wright once commented, “The good building is not one that hurts the landscape, but one which makes the landscape more beautiful than it was before the building was built.” Ceiling height, noticeably low in the foyer and halls, would encourage guests to make their way into the larger, higherceilinged living room where they could converse and, as in the Thaxton House, take in the expansive view through the floorto-ceiling windows.

The view of the courtyard from the living room is understandably the favorite of the current preservation-minded owner, Dr. Allen Gaw. “It’s almost a Zen-like atmosphere,” explains Gaw. “The natural light, the balance of colors and the feeling of calmness that comes together are so unique. It’s hard to believe we are just blocks away from major thoroughfares, yet sitting here and also in the courtyard, you find a peacefulness and quiet that is unique.” Gaw purchased the dilapidated home in 1991, a sale that potentially saved the structure. A prospective developer, given the prime location of the 51,727-square-foot lot, was considering the purchase for teardown. “The built-in furnishings had been disassembled, and the concrete walls and knotless redwood paneling had been painted over in multiple layers of paint,” says Gaw regarding the condition of the house at the time of his purchase.

BACK TO THE ORIGINAL It took five years of construction and many dollars to breathe “Wright” back into the design. In 1995, the homeowner sought the expertise of Bob Inapa with Kirksey Architecture to design the U-shaped addition that would, in Gaw’s words, “complement, not copy” Wright’s original design. I
n the end, it was all about that oak tree. Almost 100 years ago, someone planted a live oak in the city’s right of way, and Trevor and Shirley Jeffries wanted it to continue living and growing on their property. In order to build their new Cherryhust neighborhood house, variances had to be requested and made to build on a corner lot on Haver Street. With a little give-and-take by the city, homeowners’ association and the Jeffries, the home was created around this live oak tree, which provides natural filters for light and sound with its long branches covered in ferns and moss and extending in three directions. The effect of the tree is felt inside the house, as well as on the outdoor spaces. “It’s almost like a tree house, with the wood siding,” says Trevor. “We really wanted to preserve that feeling.” The Jeffries started planning their 4,300-square-foot house in May 2014, began construction in October 2015 and moved in last December. The house was part of the AIA Home Tour in October.
KEY FEATURES The house, a modern three-story structure with sloping rooflines and windows everywhere, is divided inside: Living space downstairs, with bedrooms and private areas upstairs. The downstairs is basically one large room, joining the kitchen, dining and living rooms unencumbered by walls. first by lowering them in the dining area and covering them in ipe wood (a sustainable Brazilian hardwood) to match the exterior of the house. The kitchen, although tucked away in the front of the house, is bordered with dark walnut cabinets and has large crystal chandeliers and fixtures hovering above the long island and Calcutta avalanche stone breakfast bar. The living room’s high ceiling and wall of windows take in the tree and an outdoor green space with a long table and fire pit, as well as a water feature with a bright “Ferrari” red backsplash — matching the front door of the house.
WALK THROUGH Upon entering the house, visitors encounter a decorative brick screen-type partition in the vestibule, erected for privacy and to separate the area from the rest of the house. The durable glossy-white terrazzo floors covering the entire downstairs space heighten the brightness of the house. But visitors are immediately attracted to a face-to-face encounter with an imposing 8-foot-high 1873 painting of a British military gentleman, Jeffries’ great-grandfather Capt. Henry Augustus “Sugar” Candy, attired in a full-dress uniform of the 9th Lancers. He commands your attention! Nearby in the dining room, designed to accommodate 10 at the table but extended to seat 25 for a family feast, floor-toceiling windows border one side with a row of smaller glass boxes under the stairs to let in a cross breeze and additional light. The 10-foot-long table, created by the Phillips

The living room is set off behind a brick partition, allowing for privacy and carving out a small vestibule.
Collection, is a natural Chamcha wood slab with deep grain lines and natural knots shown on its surface. And, the Jeffries note, the acoustics in the housework work great for the majestic grand piano, situated between the living and dining areas.
UPSTAIRS Up a floating staircase of cork steps is a large room for mixed uses: Relaxing, watching television, working out, practicing yoga or just sitting. Another glass wall leads out to a large terrace, tucked into the tree’s canopy with frequently used comfortable chairs and a sofa. “It is always noticeably cooler out here, with the breezes,” the Jeffries agree. “And although we are outside, it is private. The outdoor space joins the indoors.” The bedrooms in the house are noticeably smaller than the other rooms in the house, and this was by choice, says Evans. “The trend now is for smaller bedrooms but larger living spaces, and that just makes more sense,” he says. “Everything in the house is easy to access and functional and operates well for the homeowners.” A third level of the house includes a large pool table and walls adorned with sports memorabilia. large skylights in the ceiling, the room is bathed in natural light all day long. The master bedroom has its own mini-terrace and a small office behind a divider in the rear of the room. The entry to the master suite is through a vestibule, leading to a large hisand-hers closet, a mostly-hers shoe closet and a lovely bright bathroom with a soaking tub that resembles an egg. The bathroom is lined with quartz countertops and glass-enclosed fixtures.
ENERGY EFFICIENT Evans says although many of the house’s walls are windows, it is constructed to be extremely energy efficient. The walls were sprayed with foam insulation, which he says is better than the fiberglass batts or rolls, and the windows are all high performance. Additionally, the Jeffries are able to control all of the technology in the house from their smart phones: Air conditioning, lights, music and alarm system. Because of all the luminous and bright interiors, the house feels much larger than it is. “The design here was flexible. The light colors (gray palette) make the space look open and is a blank canvas,” says Evans.

AUTUMN COLOR
NOTE: You do not want to plant chrysanthemums in your flower bed. They are space hogs and fill up your garden, growing over your “precious treasures” already there. Plus, mums never look the same once they become garden plants. You will eventually weed them out, compost them — and this is OK. I refer to mums as quick color, as they come in quickly…and they go out just as quickly. Using crotons in containers or for enhancing garden corners can create colorful foliage of orange, yellow, green and red. Crotons are woody plants used as landscape foundations in Florida. Crotons adapt well to our climate, and if you are going to grow them in the ground, add expanded shale to improve drainage, which is critical during our winter months. Some transitional blooming plants will flower until frost. This list

h, the days of lower humidity translate to cooler temperatures and our first sign that fall is here. Low-humidity fronts act like outdoor air conditioning and get us excited about the season. These days are as much mental relief as well as physical relief, and not only for us, but for our plants and garden spaces, too. Our northerly neighbors experience “Indian Summer,” but here, we experience “Indian Fall.” This terminology means we get some cooler days as a sampling, but the temperatures can climb back up to summer mode — and we start sweating again! So what does that mean for our gardens and container plantings? We are itching to dress our garden in its finest fall color, but with the continuing likelihood of hot days and lack of cool nights, we don’t know what to do. To start, walk through your garden and do a mental inventory on what looks great and what needs to be removed. No doubt your yellow lantana and blue plumbago look the best they have all year, so complement the colors that are thriving in your garden. What plants thrive with temperature fluctuations and bloom until we settle into consistently cold or the first hard freeze? The fall transition could last 30 days or three months, so what colorful plants should we use?
FALL TRADITIONALS Chrysanthemums are instant fall color and come already budded. They’re available in small, medium and large pot sizes and in burgundy, bronze, yellow, orange, pink and white. You can use them in containers as fall decorator plants and enjoy their blooms until after Thanksgiving. Add a pumpkin or two with some corn or milo, and you have a festive seasonal display.
includes celosia or “Cock’s Comb.” The “Amigo” series with red foliage looks great with orange or yellow marigolds. There are two groups of marigolds, those with large flowers (African) and those with small flowers (French). The small blooming varieties produce more flowers that last longer, especially with lots of rain. By the way, spring and fall are the only times marigolds do well in Southeast Texas.
SOFTER HUES If bold fall colors are not your favorite, you can plant petunias, as they love this time of year. The “Madness” series of petunias includes spreading plants in habit, so space on 12-inch centers, as one plant can grow 16-20 inches wide. Petunias come in pink, purple, blue, white and red. These spreading varieties are great for containers, as they become the spiller. The “Mambo” series of petunias features hybrids considered genetic dwarfs, with varieties growing 6-8 inches tall and 6-8 inches wide in the same color selections as the “Madness” series. The dark purple flowered petunia is very fragrant, so plant some purple to excite the olfactory senses. There is another series called the “Aladdin Nautical” with flowers in light blue, dark blue, lilac, white and dark purple to contrast and complement each other beautifully. NOTE: When you see plant tags noting colors, know that one plant does not have all those colors on it. In a plant tray you will have a mix of plants with different colors on each plant, so if they are not blooming, you do not know what color you are getting. Be adventurous and select the combinations that excite you at the moment. Do not think too hard about the selection or combinations, as the plantings are only temporary, fill in during the transition period and are to be replaced after the first frost — with coldweather color and veggies!
