EDITOR’S NOTE
is the season for entertaining, open houses and celebrations with family and friends, and this issue is chock-full of great ideas. At Houston House & Home magazine we’re also celebrating an anniversary; it’s our 24th year of connecting homeowners with the professionals who can make their remodeling and new construction dreams come true. If you’ve ever wanted a look inside turn-of-the century homes with those amazing architectural details, or a better idea of how modern construction takes advantage of new technology, then there’s no better time than now. November and December are big months for home tours, so check out our calendar and chart your course. You won’t want to miss our feature on a Mission Revival home in the Houston Heights. HDT builders almost tripled its original size while preserving the home’s original French doors; they also duplicated a parapet that had been thought lost to time. What’s your entertaining style? Whether you welcome guests with a casual, down-home style, or you prefer to create an elaborate tablescape surrounded by heirloom china, our Editor’s Picks section has great ideas for dressing up home and table. We’ve even taken a look at the amazing pieces collected by Carroll Sterling Masterson and Harris Masterson III at their magnificent Rienzi home. Time can be our most precious resource, so consider letting somebody else do the cooking this time around.
Our Recipe section shows how to serve delicious food without throwing healthy living out the window. Local designer Anne Breux is just back from Paris, and she found some amazing new décor ideas that really push the envelope when it comes to design, including the first ever gold LED lights and a fireplace that uses water to give the illusion of flames. Architecture buffs are all abuzz about the new Menil Drawing Institute, with its white oak wood floors, architectural concrete and playful interaction with light; we’ve featured its journey in this issue. At the other extreme we’ve profiled two installations from Havel Ruck Projects, the swirly “Ripple” at Cherryhurst House and the holey “Open House” at Sam Houston Park. Life is richer (and more relaxing) when we take up hobbies. Today’s quilts are more fine art than function, and this month’s Project section looks at one local quilter who has won “Best In Show” three times at Houston’s International Quilt Festival. It also seems that gardeners don’t have to take a break during the winter and our Gardening section shows why this is the perfect time for culinary plants. And lastly, have you taken a look at our pet of the month, Baby? Cute as all get out, and intelligent too. We know she’ll find her furever home very soon. From our home to yours, Susie Tommaney

OUT OF TOWN The historic Kneese home (313 West San Antonio, Fredericksburg) was originally constructed between 1848 and 1849 and served as the home of Ludwig and Minna Imhoff Kneese. The congregation of Methodist Episcopal Church of Fredericksburg met in the log cabin for services, but quickly grew too large for the cabin. Plans were made to build a new church across the street, now the home of the Fredericksburg Historical Society. That building, along with the log cabin, stand as two of the oldest original structures in Fredericksburg. Photo by Jim Fox
Fredericksburg Christmas Showcase
Now in its 61st year, the Christmas Home Tour & Market, benefiting the Gillespie County Historical Society/Pioneer Museum, will showcase Fredericksburg homes decorated in the spirit of Christmas. This year’s home tour sponsor is First United Bank. The tour is Saturday, December 1, from 11:00 a.m.-5 p.m. The market returns this year at the Gillespie County Historical Society/Pioneer Museum Historic Sanctuary and Social Hall at 312 West San Antonio and will be open 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. This year’s tour will feature town and country homes from Fredericksburg’s earliest days to its most contemporary — all uniquely decorated for the season. Musicians will be featured in several homes. “We are grateful to our homeowners for their hospitality and support,” says Jill Carr, 2018 chair. “We look forward to welcoming our neighbors and our visitors from all around the state.” The market will feature 21 boutique vendors offering
unique gifts, specialty foods and holiday items, plus a coffee bar and musicians to entertain. “Your favorite vendors return this year along with some new fabulous faces,” says Chris Berger, market chair. “Whether you begin or end your day shopping at the market, you will not want to miss it.” Fickle is once again the 2018 market sponsor. For the first time, there will be a market preview party, Yuletide Cheer, sponsored by McLane Ford on Friday, November 30, from 6-9 p.m. Tickets are $35 and can be purchased at the museum and online. The tour is self-guided. A tour map and booklet with description of each home are provided to tour participants. Tour tickets are $30 per person (after November 26, tickets are $35 per person). Tickets may be purchased online at pioneermuseum.net or by calling 830-9908441. Entrance to the Market is included in your ticket. For those just wanting to shop the market, tickets may be purchased at the door for $5.

or Houston native Cynthia England, an artful quilt is more than an eye-catching pattern or even the colorful materials bound by threads to embellish them. “A quilt has to make you forget it is made of fabric so it can be seen as a work of art,” England says. The internationally-known fiber artist and pattern designer has won “Best In Show” three times at Houston’s International Quilt Festival, the largest quilt show in the nation. One of her quilts, Piece and Quiet, was selected as one of the 20th century’s best American quilts by a 29-member panel of experts representing major quilting organizations. A graduate of the Art Institute of Houston, England grew up in the Heights and Spring Branch and now lives in

Dickinson. When she was six years old, her mother taught her to embroider; she began quilting when she was 13 years old. “The more art quilts I make, the more I realize there is no limit to what is possible with fabric. I do all of my own work and many of my quilts take six months or even longer to finish. It’s a lot of work but when it’s something you love to do, it doesn’t feel like work,” she says. Best known for developing a quilting technique called “picture piecing,” England has written two books: one on creating fiber art using a photograph and the other on traditional quilting techniques. “Nature is the subject for most of my quilts and I try to make the scene as realistic as possible,” she says.

England creates her own designs from photographs and has operated a pattern design business for 25 years. “These patterns are not intended for bed quilts, but rather as quilt art for the home. I also make traditional bed quilts from traditional patterns,” she says. England also lectures and has offered quilting workshops in every state in the United States except Hawaii, as well as abroad in Canada, Mexico, Taiwan, Japan, South Africa, Australia, Germany, South Korea and Spain. “Have quilts, will travel,” she says. For those interested in quilting, England says it’s not difficult to learn. “I recommend taking a beginning class to master the basics quickly,” she says. A self-taught quilter, England learned things by doing them wrong. “When you take a class from someone who is knowledgeable, it saves you time and money,” she says, suggesting that novices check online for tutorials and information on local quilting organizations. “Try Googling ‘quilt guild’ and your zip code and you will be surprised how many there are,” she adds. England orders most of her fabric from wholesalers to make the fabric packs for her designs. “We are lucky here in Houston to have so many quilt shops in the area with staff that are knowledgeable, offer classes and offer all the supplies you need. There is also the Quilt Festival where you can find anything because vendors come here from all over the world,” she says. Where to start? “You can do an easy project or choose something more challenging,” she says. “As a hobby, quilting doesn’t get boring because there are so many things you can do with it.”

PARIS DESIGN WEEK Designer Anne Breux Reports Back on the Hottest Trends in Design story and photos By anne Breux

orn and raised in Paris, yes, but living and working in Houston for many years, it is my pleasure to report to you on my latest visit to the City of Light. In September Maison et Objet opened in Villepinte [a suburb northeast of Paris], in parallel with Paris Design Week, with exhibitions and events throughout most of the arrondissements. The weather was perfect and the tone of the fair was golden as well: Japanese/French lighting designers Akari-Lisa Ishii and and Motoko Ishii (I.C.O.N. Lighting) previewed a prototype of the world’s first gold LED lighting at their booth. They also presented a two-day light show on the Eiffel Tower, Japonismes 2018, celebrating 160 years of diplomatic relations between France and Japan. It was magical! The Dutch company, Dimplex, came out with the brilliant idea to use water to create the illusion of fire. Petite Friture extended their line with a colorful outdoor furniture collection and a whimsical sense of humor with Egyptian-esque ceramic containers. Enough for the fairgrounds, now up to Paris! Thousands of visitors took the RER train to attend events in showrooms, bookshops and ateliers all over the city. Three different circuits were offered to us: green (architecture), blue (artistic craftsmen and knowhow) and red (art museums and galleries). I picked places in all three colors but all in the same neighborhood, the Latin Quarter, close to the École des Beaux-Arts. At Boulevard Saint-Germain I visited the boutique Mériguet-Carrère where the French brand of high-end paints made official its sponsorship with the manufacture nationale de Sèvres [a principal European porcelain factory]. 22 house& home | November 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

Close by, the Cassina showroom was presenting the Mexique table by designer Charlotte Perriand; and along Rue Jacob I rediscovered Ecart International with the impeccable taste of Andrée Putman and her disciples, Bruno Moinard and Elliott Barnes. Along Rue Bonaparte the editor Assouline had a fantastic display of design books. From there I strolled down Rue Mazarine to the Seine and along the riverbank to the Trocadéro for one last look at the Eiffel Tower.

espite what it may look like, Dan Havel and Dean Ruck are not in the house-cutting business.
Yes, the longtime Houstonians, who together form artist collaborative Havel Ruck Projects, are known for taking abandoned homes and transforming them into an explosion of wood shards or installing a reflective coppery tunnel straight from one side to another. But the duo says their preferred medium is simply a product of their environment, specifically the teardown houses and turnover culture of the Bayou City. “As artists that don’t have a lot of resources, we looked
38 house& home | November 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
around and saw that these condemned houses could be a possibility not only for material but doing site-specific work,” says Havel. The artists currently have two very different sculptural installations on view in the city of Houston, the holey “Open House” and the swirly “Ripple.” Both Havel and Ruck admit to “kicking around” the idea of a perforated house in the past, but it wasn’t until a casual conversation over lunch with Weingarten Art Group Founder Lea Weingarten, who works with the Houston Downtown Management District’s Art Blocks initiative, that the idea found its home in Sam Houston Park. Through Art Blocks, the Downtown District hopes to attract more people to downtown Houston and, in this case, draw more visitors to Sam Houston Park, home to The Heritage Society, which has moved ten historic dwellings, dat-

ing back to 1823, to the park. Learning of the installation’s placement amongst The Heritage Society’s preservation homes changed the context of the duo’s original sculptural idea, with Havel saying they “wanted to inject that history into the concept, this idea of peeking through holes into the past, peeking through holes into the future or to the present.” The perforation views of “Open House” offer the backdrop of history, courtesy of The Heritage Society, and foreground the newer, present-day cityscape while “freeze-framing” the historical past and people of Houston in the vintage photographs that paper the walls of the installation, says Ruck. 40 house& home | November 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
“Generally, the figures are anonymous. At the same time, they are kind of common to all of us. It feels like we all have those photos in our past, so there’s a real familiarity to that along with some specificity to the people, places and things about Houston,” says Ruck. Though “Open House” will be open to the public from dawn to dusk until February 2019, Havel recommends also visiting after dark to experience the piece’s “dual life.” “When the gates close at night and it gets dark, the house lights up like a lantern,” says Havel. “You can’t get into it, but it’s very visible and it really changes the piece.” While “Open House” sits in the heart of Downtown,

Montrose plays home to the duo’s installation “Ripple,” which is currently on view at the privately owned Cherryhurst House until January 2019. “Ripple” was a private commission and a “quiet endeavor,” according to Havel. “Ripple has a very different feel to it because it was a long, drawn-out process where it was built upon itself.” Ruck adds that “Ripple” was “more of a progressive piece, where ‘Open House’ we had the idea completed in our head from the start.” That said, Havel does say that they had an overall concept of what they were going to do. “It was based on the idea of dropping a pebble into a pond and watching the ripple form around that impact.”
42 house& home | November 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
The next step was drawing their designs on the walls, floors and ceiling with blue painter’s tape. “The blue tape allowed us to try out ideas, look at them, edit them, and then once we decided that’s what we wanted to do, we’d follow the blue tape with our reciprocal saws,” says Havel. The blue tape also made “Ripple” something of “a drawing exercise,” says Ruck. “Because we were working off of flat walls and using that blue tape as our mark-making, in that sense it was almost a traditional art piece.” Still, given the scale and ambition of the quite non-traditional work they do, both men value their collaboration. “It’s good to have four hands, two brains, two trucks, all of that,” says Ruck. “I think if we were working separately we’d be trying to do the same kind of ambitious projects, but it would just be twice as hard.”

RESURRECTION 1914 Mission Revival Home Restored to Former Glory … and So Much More By BarBara Canetti Photos By Benjamin hill PhotograPhy

iz Hanks says it was the seven sets of original French doors that sealed the deal for her. As she and her Realtor toured the 1914 Mission Revival house in the Houston Heights in 2015, she immediately fell in love with the enormous amount of light coming into the rooms through those old doors with the original wavy glass. “I feel like I’m outside when I’m in here,” says Hanks, who moved into the newly renovated house with her husband Stephen Schroder and daughter. A second girl was born since they moved into the house, which Hanks says accommodates the family perfectly.
“We just love this house. There are so many giant open spaces for us.” –Liz Hanks
The house had fallen into severe disrepair over the last few decades. Dee Todd-Simmons of HDT builders remodeled and expanded it from 1,500 square feet to its present 4,083 square feet in 2013. Some of the wide-plank walnut floors in the entry, upstairs rooms and master closet are original to the house, as are light fixtures in the living room, butler’s pantry and an upstairs bathroom. Reclaimed pine was used in the other rooms. And, in the remodeling process, an old photo of the house showing a parapet was used to recreate that adornment on the roof with the original window, which was found in the attic.

Teal paint on the front door gives just the right pop of color against the entry's wide-plank walnut floors, which are original to the 1914 house.
A large crumbling brick fireplace in the center foyer was rebuilt and is the first thing visitors see when entering the two-story house. It separates the formal living room from the formal dining room, but sets the tone of the entire house. Most of the walls in the downstairs are white, and Hanks selected several bold furnishings to bring color and pizazz to the rooms. A small powder room off the living room was wallpapered by The Wallpaper Lady in a lively, bright floral design that coincidently coordinates with the

The six-burner (plus a griddle) Wolf stove with bright red knobs is adjacent to additional ovens built into the wall. The rest of the countertops are honed granite in a dark color. DRAWING A NEW LEGACY Menil Drawing Institute Brings Art Form to Forefront of Study, Exhibition By Sam Byrd
F
resh on the heels of reopening the Renzo Pianodesigned The Menil Collection (after months of refurbishing and upgrades), the nonprofit this month swings open the doors to the new Menil Drawing Institute. Adding to the world-famous artifacts and free exhibitions, the institute is a freestanding facility built expressly for the acquisition, exhibition, study, conservation and storage of modern and contemporary drawings. "These are all extensions of how the Menil operates. It’s an avocation of how one would experience the building as they would experience the same thing in a home.

It’s an extension of generosity to the public of a lovely setting in a domestic feeling space," says Kelly Montana, assistant curator at the Menil Drawing Institute. The MDI stretches 30,150 square feet, with a 17,000square foot footprint and 16-foot walls. The construction totaled $40 million and was designed by architects Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee of Los Angeles-based Johnston Marklee. The interior features white oak wood floors, floors made of architectural concrete, plaster walls and ceilings, and painted wood paneling. The exterior boasts painted steel plate, stained Port Orford cedar, architectural concrete and steel-framed glazing. Other design features include a relationship to the landscape, a playful interaction with light, and a co-habitation of public and professional space. Expansive lawns and live oaks are unmistakable features at the site. As visitors

More controlled gradients of artificial light define areas for exhibition and storage. A "living room" runs between the west and east entrance courtyards. On the north, the living room gives access to administrative offices on one side of the scholars' cloister and to study rooms and the conservation lab on the other. On the south side, the space opens into the exhibition galleries.

"To have an institute that mirrors the ones in Europe shows a deep appreciation of drawing and a camaraderie of drawings that you have to crowd around and look at together. Instead of having a prolonged look at an artist, we're looking at a particular medium," Montana says. The Menil Drawing Institute will serve as a foil to its other initiatives, with a heavy focus on preservation and study of the art form. "For us, it’s building out the academic component. We're getting young scholars out here to visit works of art they cherish. For me, it’s important to make the non-

exhibition spaces as vibrant as the exhibition spaces, to activate the seminar spaces, and to activate the reading rooms and make them as exciting," Montana says. To accomplish this feat, the Menil installed a living room, exhibition gallery, drawing study room, conservation lab, administrative offices, two courtyards and a scholars' cloister, representing more than 16,000 square feet of space. drawings and to create an atmosphere for works on paper. The drawings are not just exhibitions, but there’s also research and the public can interface with works of art," Montana says. The property is furnished with custom collections of benches, tables, ottomans and desk accessories, created in collaboration with Jeff Jamieson of Wood & Plywood Furniture in California. Each piece was inspired by the elemental, structural forms of the building.

The Menil Drawing Institute’s inaugural exhibition is “The Condition of Being Here: Drawings by Jasper Johns,” a show that spans the artist's career. Access to the drawings of Johns have been brought to fruition largely thanks to the generosity of Menil trustees Janie C. Lee and Louisa Stude Sarofim and a bequest from David Whitney. The exhibition includes 41 drawings made in graphite, ink, charcoal, watercolor, colored pencil, acrylic, water-soluble encaustic, pastel, powdered graphite, gouache and oil stick, on surfaces ranging from paper to plastic. "It explores the capacity of a medium while undermining the traditions of the medium, which is the story of modern contemporary art," says Kelly Montana, MDI’s assistant curator. The current exhibit is the third time this living artist has been featured at the Menil. Previous exhibits include “Jasper Johns: The Sculptures” (1996) and “Jasper Johns: Drawings” (2003). The organization will culminate this partnership with a decade's worth of effort to gather and prepare the Jasper Johns Catalogue Raisonné of Drawings. The six-volume work documents more than 800 drawings, beautifully reproduced, including their exhibition and publication histories. The Menil Collection Menil Drawing Institute 713-525-9400 menil.org

“THE CONNOISSEUR’S EYE” Porcelains From the Collection of Carroll Sterling Masterson and Harris Masterson III by KaTriCia lang Photos courtesy of Rienzi, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston house museum for European decorative arts
T
here is a beauty and art to entertaining. So illustrate the 18th century ceramics found in “The Connoisseur’s Eye: New Perspectives on Ceramics in the Rienzi Collection,” drawing from the extensive porcelains collected by philanthropists Carroll Sterling Masterson and Harris Masterson III, on view at Rienzi, 1406 Kirby, through January 13, 2019. Top row, left to right: A finely painted lugger adorns the bottom of The Judas punch bowl. Figure of a Wigmaker is one in a menagerie of odd characters meant for the dining room table. Imperial and Royal Porcelain Manufactory produced this small-scale porcelain sculpture, among others, circa 1760. Deep Dish is a scalloped shaped soft-paste porcelain plate produced by Chelsea Porcelain Works circa 1755. Its naturalistic design copies botanical illustrations published in Philip Miller’s 1752 edition of The Gardeners Dictionary. 70 house& home | November 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
Bottom row, left to right: Fishermen S. & D. Peach commissioned this hand-painted, nautically themed punch bowl, naming it The Judas in honor of their profitable fishing vessel. In addition to lattice and scrolls, fish scales, flowers and insects decorate the bowl’s interior. Produced by Lowestoft Porcelain Factory, circa 1790. Sweetmeat or Pickle Stand is emblematic of the Rococo style. The elaborate centerpiece was produced by the Bow Porcelain Factory, circa 1760. There is more to this 18th century Jardiniere than meets the eye. Using trompe l’oeil technique, the Niderviller Porcelain Factory produced a flower pot holder that looks more like wood than pottery.

GARDENING

TASTY WINTER GARDEN Looks Good, Tastes Great: The Time is Now for Culinary Planting
S
ure, everybody gets spring fever and wants to do some gardening when the cool temps begin to rise. But did you know that fall and winter are really the best times to garden with herbs? Most culinary plants (herbs) are actually happier and perform better in the cooler months here along the Texas Gulf Coast. Planting young herb transplants helps them get established, and they are more likely to go further into the coming summer if planted now. It's the summer heat that usually does them in, not the cold weather. Surprising, right? Even if the leaves get frost-bitten in a freeze the roots are strong and the plants will recover For example, cilantro has a short-ish life cycle. It only lives to produce seeds, also known as coriander. Once the seed producing cycle occurs the mother plant dies off. The warm weather is what makes it bloom. The same goes for dill and fennel. The cool weather slows their seed production, therefore rewarding gardeners with nice, fat mounds of spicy leaves all fall, winter and into spring.
Parsley, as well, thrives in the cooler months. It’s often used as a border plant because parsley plants only make tight, round 12-inch mounds, making them both ornamental and edible. Chives won’t freeze and are used in many recipes. They go dormant in the summer, but don’t be surprised if they pop up again after Halloween next year. Sage, rosemary, thyme and oregano, likewise, are great cool weather edibles. These will actually take our hot summers nicely if planted now. Mexican mint, marigold, lemon grass and most mint varieties are completely winter hardy. Just cut them back all the way after winter. They will return dependably after it warms up a little. Bay laurel is an evergreen, meaning it’s safe to plant it anytime. Just remember the plant is actually a shrub, so leave some room for it to get big. Start planting now, and have a delicious winter. Remember, work less, enjoy more!

PET OF THE MONTH
MY NAME IS BABY Have you ever heard of a Black Mouth Cur? Neither had I, until someone told me that's what I am mixed with! I currently stay at the large doggie lounge at the Houston SPCA, but it's only temporary since I'm sure I'll be going home with you soon. My hobbies include running and being petted 24/7. I do spend a lot of time outside but, honestly, sometimes it can be too much. I will let you know when I want to come back in. Little humans are great, and other doggies are okay too; just make sure we get introduced slowly. Don't wait too long though — I’ve been waiting here since summer. Please come by and say hi today! Bonus: I already know "sit" if you also use a point down hand signal. FEMALE ID# 241066 Black Mouth Cur mix The Houston SPCA, 900 Portway Drive, is open seven days a week, Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to make choosing the adoption option as easy as possible. 76 house& home | November 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
