T

his month Houston House & Home Magazine celebrates its

25th year; it’s been an amazing journey since publisher Mike Harrison and art director Tim Beeson transformed their love for home remodeling into a successful publishing endeavor. What a joy it has been to document gorgeous projects by architects, builders, interior designers and contractors, providing inspiration for Houstonians as they make plans for their own projects. We also take pride in connecting small and large companies with the homeowners and professionals who need their services most, serving as informal matchmakers as part of our overall mission to “support local.” I would like to recognize the hard-working team at Houston House & Home Magazine, without whom none of this would be possible: Publisher Mike Harrison for his stewardship and for sharing his dream with the rest of us; art director Robert Coplin for his deep institutional knowledge, creativity, and ability to wear multiple hats; sales gurus Gia Montalto and Christina Garza for their tenacious spirit and uncanny ability in helping local businesses get their message out to readers; Robert Cox who makes sure the magazines are available so loyal readers can find the next issue; and our

dedicated staff of contributing writers and photographers with their valuable knowledge of all things “house and home.” Over the past 25 years we have seen other staffers come and go and they all left the magazine just a little bit better, and for their efforts we remain grateful. This month we took a trip down memory lane, showcasing some of our favorite projects over the years. Please look to see which ones you remember, then read our other features: a modern farmhouse with a twist by 2Scale Architects, and a comfortable family abode by Rice Residential Design and built by Cason Graye Homes. With hospitality as a theme, and to celebrate our 25th anniversary, we’ve dedicated this issue to entertaining. From champagnes to event planning and from holiday serving trays to the ultimate in host/hostess gifts, consider the November issue your resource guide for entertaining in style. So raise a glass and share a toast with us as we embark on the next quarter century of introducing homeowners and industry professionals to the local businesses and craftspersons who can make dreams come true. Salud! From our home to yours, Susie Tommaney

Budget, party size and venue are just the beginning when it comes to logistics. Turn to the pros for help with all the details and planning. Photos by Weatherall Photography

“Capture you guests’ attention.” — Lauren Ashley, LA Weddings & Interiors, LLC favorite bigleaf white hydrangeas and mondial white roses to a monochromatic mix of specialty ordered green flowers that featured textured strands of hanging amaranthus. “I try to pick different things that are not normally seen. I want people to say, ‘Woah, I wasn’t expecting that!’” People remember what they feel, says Ashley. So make the event an experience, not just for your partygoers, but also for yourself. Do some introspection and soul searching when deciding on your theme, says Ashley. Make it mean something. And meaning something is open to interpretation. When it comes to themes, “Will Smith” is just as valid as “winter.” Ashley has thrown a ‘90s nostalgia and hip-hop fla22 house& home | November 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

vored party to prove it. Ashley also recommends seeking professional guidance, even if you are helming the project yourself. A simple phone or Skype consultation will do wonders for the doit-yourself person, she says. “You can talk to me about your ideas and I can give you direction and help you connect the dots for what you’re trying to do.“ Other professionals can provide assistance, too. For an “under the sea” themed baby shower, Ashley enlisted the services of One Fiesty Chef. The food and fashion maven behind the catering company came with her own party supplies replete with prop sea shells and coral. Another reason to hire a professional party planner is

simple: You don’t know what you don’t know. There are, excuse the play on words, a host of logistics and practicalities to consider beyond budget, party size and venue: DJ or band, photo booth, servers, valet parking, linen rentals, bar service, housekeeping — the list goes on and on. Ashley mentions cleaning up after the party. Though usually an afterthought, it’s just as important as set-up. Unlike Cinderella, your carriage won’t automatically revert back into a pumpkin. At the end of the night, you 24 house& home | November 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

have to break down the set and put your toys away. It’s a simple concept, but a difficult task. Whether you decide to hire a planner or not, Ashley has a bit of universal advice: Don’t overextend yourself financially. Food, drink, decorations, entertainment — it all adds up quickly. A lot goes into a party and your total can balloon to $5,000 very quickly, she says. Don’t let party planning be a party pooper. Remember, this is your celebration.

NECTAR OF THE GODS A Champagne for Every Price Point

A

champagne toast is a dignified way to celebrate life’s finest moments. Be it New Year’s Eve, a wedding reception or graduation celebration, champagne makes any occasion special. It’s often viewed as belonging to the upper echelon of spirits, and its price tag is presumably expected to match, but that’s not always the case. The bubbly is available in all price points, and anyone can enjoy a sip without dipping into the emergency savings. YOU HAVE CAVIAR TASTES ON A BEER BOTTLE BUDGET Charlie Skeens from Richard’s Liquors and Fine Wines tells us that most bottles under $20 aren’t champagnes at all. They’re considered sparkling wines because they don’t originate from the Champagne region of France. The

closest true bottle Richard’s offers in this price range is Abel Charlot Brut, which retails around $21. YOU FOUND SOME CASH IN THOSE JEANS YOU HAVEN’T WORN SINCE LAST YEAR If you’ve recently found a couple of twenties left in your pant pockets, consider it a blessing from above. Go ahead, splurge a little and try a bottle between the $25 to $50 range. Skeens recommends the André Clouet. He sums it up succinctly saying, “For $41, it’s very good.” YOU NEED TO IMPRESS THE FUTURE IN-LAWS That dreaded first dinner with the future in-laws can strike fear in the hearts of many. Yet, armed with a bottle of bubbles, it will hopefully break the tension and leave a

Champagne For Around $20 So how in the heck is it even possible to buy a decent champagne for around $20? Bear Dalton, the fine wine buyer for Spec’s Wines, Spirits and Finer Foods, wondered himself if these deals had gone the way of the mythical chupacabra or unicorn. Dalton wrote a nice blog post that discussed how the producers were raising prices because of the increased value of the euro versus the dollar, as well as just an overall rise in production costs. But lo and behold, the Spec’s buyers heard from Co-opérative Régionale des Vins de Champagne — the same folks who make Champagne Castelnau — and scooped up a fabulous deal on the Champagne Abel Charlot Brut. Turns out the co-op didn’t have a big promotional budget and were frugal when it came to shipping costs, making their price point practically perfect in every way. BearScore: 90+

good impression. Plus, you can keep it between $50 and $100 so that you don’t break the bank trying to get on their good side. Skeens recommends the Louis Roederer, which lands at the $68 price point. Why this one? Skeens says, “They also make Cristal, which can be up to $500 per bottle, so I think they know what they’re doing.” YOU FOUND SPARE CHANGE WHILE SITTING ON OPRAH’S COUCH Go ahead, take a trip to the Big O’s house and feel around for some spare C-notes she might have dropped between her couch cushions. Then, you’ll be able to afford all the fancy names associated with luxury goods. Skeens says to go with Cristal, which will cost $263 per bottle. He prefers this bottle because the grapes used come from Grand Cru Vineyards, an area known for pro27

ducing the best fruits. “All the more expensive ones come from those vineyards,” he tells us. Or you could spring for the $173 bottle of Dom Perignon. “There’s a difference in the taste. Cristal is part Grand Cru but it’s chardonnay and pinot nior. Dom Perignon is chardonnay and a little bit of pinot noir." At the end of the day, it’s not necessarily the price that means the bottle will be any better. The brands that are the most recognizable and the highest in demand come with the steepest prices. Alex Lobodin, personal wine specialist for Richard’s Liquors, says, “The most important thing to remember is it’s a luxury good industry. It is location and reputation that brings them to the top to be the kings.”

Since the first Central Market was built in Austin in 1994, the brand has grown to include ten locations all over Texas, including Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, Plano, San Antonio and Southlake. The family’s vision was to make Central Market a destination for high quality and specialty foods like cheeses, coffees and condiments from all over the globe, house baked bread, chocolates, a full deli, a prime meat and seafood department, terrific wines and prepared foods. It’s that time of year when Central Market may become an essential part of your holiday shopping. The catering kitchen creates platters galore from flank steak and shrimp cocktail to quesadillas. Also, count on cold and hot hors d’oeuvre like chicken skewers, crab cakes, and Pacific Rim meatballs.

Charcuterie-cheese boards have never been hotter, and there’s an assortment to choose from. You’ll need wine for your party, and the wine department has the perfect bottle in every price range (and lots of staff to assist). Russ Stephenson, wine and beer manager/buyer, offered some of the pairing suggestions below. If you decide to craft a spread at home, consider these inspiring combinations. No one will get bored with these chef boards.

ARTISAN CHEESE PLATTER Chef’s selection of cheeses includes Manchego, Délice de Bourgogne, 1883 Vintage Cheddar, Goat, and Gorgonzola Dolcé, along with Marcona almonds, Spanish olive mix, quince paste, figs and cherries. Wine pairing: Long Meadow Ranch Anderson Valley pinot noir and Aperture North Coast chenin blanc (both California).

CHARCUTERIE PLATTER Milano and Genoa salami, apple wood smoked ham, herbes de Provence olives, country paté, truffle mousse, cornichons, and Dijon

Good things take time, and Central Market’s catering staff asks that you place your orders 48 hours in advance. While it’s fun to witness the evolution of this chefprepared platter, you’ll be able to watch the action in reverse once you present it to your guests. Central Market’s platter offerings include grilled beef tenderloin, cocktail or grilled shrimp, dip sampler, spinach and artichoke dip, and many more. Photos courtesy of Central Market

“No one will get bored with these chef boards.” mustard call for fruity wines with food-friendly acidity. Wine pairing: Birichion, France, a juicy red grenache or lively La Crema Monterey pinot gris.

FRUIT, CHEESE AND SWEETS Crowd please with ease by piling on creamy cheeses like indulgent Brie, triple crème Cambozola, Humboldt Fog, along with Marcona almonds, dried apricots, blackberry preserves, Champagne grapes, sliced pears and figs. Wine pairing: floral whites like viognier or Domaine Roland Lavantureux French Chablis.

VEGGIE LOVERS PLATTER Beautifully shaved cucumber ribbons, green beans, carved carrots, red pepper slivers, cherry tomatoes, asparagus, and toast points served with pink Love Dip (roasted red bell pepper and sour cream). Wine pairing: La Pitchoune chenin blanc “La Bombe” or Sonoma Coast aperitif darling, vin gris of pinot noir. For festive fun, try Schramsberg sparkling rosé, Napa. MUSHROOM SPINACH RISOTTO

H

ere’s a recipe from Central Market that would be luxurious for a holiday course or vegetarian dish. Pair it with Gary Farrell Russian River pinot noir or rich Benovia Three Sisters Chardonnay Fort Ross-Seaview.

INGREDIENTS 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 1/2 cups arborio rice 2 tablespoons garlic, chopped 8 cups vegetable broth 4 cups cremini mushrooms, sliced 1 cup baby spinach 1/2 bunch thyme, leaves only salt and pepper to taste 1 1/2 cups dry white wine 1 cup butter, cut into 1-inch pieces 2 cups white onion, diced 1 1/4 cups grated Parmesan cheese

32 house& home | November 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

METHOD Heat one tablespoon of olive oil in a medium sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add the garlic and sauté until fragrant, about one minute, add the mushrooms and thyme and lightly brown. After mushrooms get slightly tender, remove from heat and set aside. In a separate pot, add vegetable broth and set on medium heat. In another medium sauce pan, heat the remaining one tablespoon of olive oil over medium-high heat; add the onions and sauté until they are translucent and tender, about five minutes. Add the rice and stir to coat well. Continue to sauté until lightly toasted, two to three minutes. Add the wine and cook until dry, about five minutes. Add about one-third of the hot vegetable broth and a generous pinch of salt and cook, stirring gently until moisture is absorbed. Repeat with the remaining broth, adding it in thirds and cook until the risotto has absorbed the broth, stirring constantly. Add the spinach and stir to incorporate. Add the reserved mushrooms and remove the risotto from the heat. Stir in the butter and the Parmesan. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve immediately. Yield: Eight servings

MODERN INDUSTRIAL Wood, Metal and Brick Set the Stage in This Comfortable Family Abode By BarBara Canetti Photos By Premier realty serviCes

he first thing visitors see inside the new modern industrial house in Meyerland is a brick wall – right in the middle of the entranceway. “Without the wall, you can see all the way into the house because of the glass entrance,” says builder Bryan Phillips of Cason Graye Homes. “The brick wall is a backdrop to set up the foyer and offers the family some privacy.” The 5,670-square-foot house, home to a family with three daughters, was designed with family in mind. All the “formals” – living room, dining room, breakfast area – have been combined into one large open area with the kitchen anchoring one wall. The staircase to the upper level winds down into the kitchen with its towering two-story ceiling. “We wanted the kitchen to be the central gathering place, so you are in it as soon as you come down the stairs,” says Phillips. All the appliances are stainless Thermador and the nearby butler’s pantry houses work areas and additional storage. Two large islands of white quartz – each seating three people – face the busy part of the kitchen, thus allowing for additional meeting and social areas. The floors throughout the downstairs are engineered oak, which Phillips says makes the house feel even larger because of the continuity. He says many new construction projects in this area fall between the traditional to modern spectrum. This home is modern industrial, with exposed ductwork and open cabinetry, along

with a mixture of wood, metal and brick. Entire walls of floorto-ceiling glass bathe the house in natural light, while also providing views of the pool and yard. But the theme for the house, says architect Todd Rice of Rice Residential Design, LLC, was keeping the family in mind. “This home was designed for large gatherings and parties,” says Rice. The living room, with its matching couches that face the fireplace, has three large flat screen TVs above it to accommodate the diverse taste in entertainment. “They can mute the sound on the TV and watch the Astros

and Texans play, while the teenage girls can watch their favorite show,” says Phillips. “This way the family can stay together rather than each being in separate rooms.” The staircase to the upstairs level opens onto a second family room with an L-shaped couch over an area rug. All the bedrooms are on this floor. A fully-stocked coffee bar outside the master suite has been set up for convenient early morning beverages and quiet time. The master suite, softened with muted grays, also has access to large oversized closets with shelving for shoes, bags, acces-

sories and an illuminated cabinet. The master has a private balcony as well. The daughters’ rooms each have one wall painted black or a dark color to show off their art or personal choices for decorations. Phillips says even thought was given to the mud room, furnished with modern industrial cabinets and a kennel for the family pets. Besides the numerous indoor spots for relaxing and gathering, the outside areas offer even more nooks to congregate

and entertain or sit peacefully. There are several balconies or decks and ample seating around the pool, hot tub and fire pit. In front of the fireplace is comfortable seating for eight, adjacent to tables and chairs for outdoor dining. A full outdoor kitchen was installed under a covered roof made of cedar siding gathered four years ago when a nearby house was demolished. The wood was saved and recycled as the ceiling. “It is truly something,” says Phillips. “There are more than a dozen places in this house [for the family] to sit and relax. It really is a comfortable home.”

hen the temperatures cool, Sarah Queen likes to sit on her front porch in the late afternoon and watch pedestrians walk or push a stroller past her home on East 9th Street in the Heights. Many of those passing by stop to gaze at the house, and no wonder. “There are lots of unique and interesting-looking homes in the Heights,” she says. “Ours is one of those.” Framed in large live oak trees, the 4,000 square foot house has a stylish peaked roof, a broad porch with cedar details, rows of luminous windows and a prominent stone chimney. It has both traditional and contemporary aspects and aligns perfectly with the scale and ambiance of the neighborhood. It seems like the house has always been there, even though it was only constructed two years ago. Queen, a fifth generation Texan, finished university in California and worked there for ten years before returning home to Houston, where she now works in sales and marketing for an oilfield services company. Through friends she met her husband, who grew up in Baltimore and moved to Houston to attend Rice University. Following graduation, he stayed to launch a career in banking. After the couple married they immediately embarked on a common goal: to

It was a good location for us because we wanted to be inside the Loop near our work, our friends, and cultural opportunities,” she says. Thus, their first years of marriage were spent interviewing architects and builders, looking at materials and fixtures and, ultimately, immersing themselves in the details of designing and constructing a house. Greg Swedberg, AIA, owner of 2Scale Architects, was their choice for the right architect to help them realize their ideal home. They had biweekly meetings with him during the ten months of design and preparation.

“Designing this house was a lot of fun because the clients were so engaged from start to finish; I was excited to go on the journey with them,” says Swedberg. “They had real preferences, both contemporary and traditional home concepts, so navigating how much of each made for some interesting design conversations.” The finished product references Queen’s affinity for contemporary California design and her husband’s Baltimore upbringing. It has elements of a classic farmhouse, along with craftsman and contemporary features. Swedberg calls it modern farmhouse styling with a twist. The atypical floor plan creates some fun indoor-outdoor connections not typically seen on an urban infill lot. “It’s all pretty

modern and sophisticated. There’s no crown molding, no excess. We chose materials that age well, like the bluestone. The columns and the beams are all cedar. We stained the handrails to add some warmth,” says Swedberg. The house faces south and all the windows get ample shade. There are big overhangs and a slight taper on the eaves, a feature that makes the appearance more streamlined. Entering the house, there’s a guest suite on the front left and a study and parlor on the right that share a two-sided fireplace. The house is awash in natural light. Although the couple had no children when the house project began, they knew they wanted a family, so that was a consideration in the design. By the move-in date, they had a baby daughter and, two years later, a second daughter. “The downstairs guest suite has been great,” Queen says. “When my parents come from The Woodlands or we have outof-town guests, they can actually get a good night’s sleep and never hear a crying child. Beyond the study and the parlor is the kitchen, large and functional, that flows into a family room. It’s definitely the heart of

the home. “We cook dinner most nights and our weekend family time is spent here,” she says. The kitchen islands are placed long ways so they don’t block the living area. The continuous granite surface above the stove makes it easy to wipe down. One of the couple’s best choices was a high-end Sub-Zero wine fridge to house their wine collection from northern California. All the other appliances are Thermador. Adjoining the kitchen and living area is a courtyard that serves as a covered exterior room. “With the cooler weather, we are out there all the time,” says Queen. A special piece of art is the stained glass window by Karen Farrell, a local artist. The art glass depicts a combination of elements representing Maryland, Texas and California. For the home’s interior, the couple worked with Colby Weems of Eclectic Home “Our house has a lot of natural stone and color. It’s definitely my happy place,” she adds.

The trumpet bush, or tecoma Sparklette, is a tropical-looking shrub with showy clusters of yellow and maroon bell-shaped flowers. INSET: Be the guest with the most when you deliver a potted succulent to your host or hostess.

STACKING THE DECK Discover the Advantages of Late Fall Gardening SWEET SPOT

A

s the year’s end nears many people think it’s time to quit gardening. Au contraire! This is the perfect season for many gardening projects. For example, this is the least stressful time for transplanting shrubs and trees as they enter dormancy. Their chances of survival are greater since they won’t need to support new growth or blooms. A few suggestions for the fall planting season include the Ebony and Ivory crape myrtle that, come summer, will reward gardeners with its jet black leaves and white flowers. A tall eight foot shrub that should be planted now while it’s cooler is the tecoma Sparklette; expect an almost constant showing of its orange bell-

shaped blooms. Winter freezes won’t harm either of these plants. Woody perennials, also, should be planted now. Sure, the tops may get burnt during freezes but the roots will be all snuggled up and protected. Just 12 inches below ground it can be as much as 20 degrees warmer, offering more protection for the roots. Remember, “Work less, enjoy more!”

GREEN GIFTING Anyone can bring a bottle of wine to a dinner party. Instead, surprise your host with a succulent in a festive planter. Just give those classic seasonal colors a modern twist. Eeasy to place table-top sized pots — ranging in size from four inches to ten inches — can find a spot on any dinner table.
