HOLIDAY HOME STAGING By Talena Gulash of InTerIor DesIGn By Talena
A
s the pumpkin spice lattes are now being sold in coffee shops and the spiced pumpkin scented candles are on prominent display, we know the holidays are upon us. This is the time of year when a mere scent in the air or a beautiful ribbon summons memories of time spent with our family and friends. As we begin to see neighbors hang wreaths on their front doors, we feel compelled to pull ours out from storage as well. What if this year is the year you decide you want something new? What should you get and where do you begin? There is no need to fret because I am going to give you some tips to spruce up your holiday décor.
Step One: First look around your home to get an idea of what colors are already in your day-to-day home décor. Ask yourself if there is a particular design style which has been established. For example, do you have a blue sofa or chairs? Is the artwork on the wall filled with bold, vibrant colors, or are they muted pastels? Is your current design aesthetic leaning toward farmhouse, modern or transitional? No matter the color choices or design style presently in your home, I recommend you stay the course. Unless you have a remodel or redesign project planned for the near future, I believe it is best to purchase holiday décor which fits in seamlessly with your day-to-day décor. A great example of this is in my own personal home. I have two blue velvet chairs at the heads of my dining room table. In order to stick with the current 8
house& home | November 2020 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
color theme for my autumn décor, I found a stunning blue velvet table runner. I also found an assortment of decorative pumpkins which are not the standard orange, cream and brown color scheme we so frequently find in stores, but instead work perfectly with the dominant blues already established in the space.
Step Two: Before you shop, take note of the areas in your home you intend to decorate so that you shop with intention. People often walk up and down store isles grabbing things they like but without first planning where they may use it, which may result in a disorganized look or items forced into a space where scale is mismatched. I find it is best to make a list of areas which you feel could be decorated beautifully for the holiday. This may include your fireplace mantel, dining room table, stair rail, etcetera. Make sure to take measurements of each space before you shop for it. If you find garland or swag, you will want to be confident it is the correct length.
Step Three: When shopping for items to be displayed on a surface top, select items that look good grouped together. Decorative items are not best displayed when placed side-by-side, covering the surface from left to right. Alternatively, when arranged in a small group of three or four, the eye is naturally drawn in and more likely to crave more as it peruses the room. Happy decorating!

TASTY WINTER GARDEN Looks Good, Tastes Great: The Time is Now for Culinary Planting
S
ure, everybody gets spring fever and wants to do some gardening when the cool temps begin to rise. But did you know that fall and winter are really the best times to garden with herbs? Most culinary plants (herbs) are actually happier and perform better in the cooler months here along the Texas Gulf Coast. Planting young herb transplants helps them get established, and they are more likely to go further into the coming summer if planted now. It's the summer heat that usually does them in, not the cold weather. Surprising, right? Even if the leaves get frost-bitten in a freeze the roots are strong and the plants will recover For example, cilantro has a short-ish life cycle. It only lives to produce seeds, also known as coriander. Once the seed producing cycle occurs the mother plant dies off. The warm weather is what makes it bloom. The same goes for dill and fennel. The cool weather slows their seed production, therefore rewarding gardeners with nice, fat mounds of spicy leaves all fall, winter and into spring.
Parsley, as well, thrives in the cooler months. It’s often used as a border plant because parsley plants only make tight, round 12-inch mounds, making them both ornamental and edible. Chives won’t freeze and are used in many recipes. They go dormant in the summer, but don’t be surprised if they pop up again after Halloween next year. Sage, rosemary, thyme and oregano, likewise, are great cool weather edibles. These will actually take our hot summers nicely if planted now. Mexican mint, marigold, lemon grass and most mint varieties are completely winter hardy. Just cut them back all the way after winter. They will return dependably after it warms up a little. Bay laurel is an evergreen, meaning it’s safe to plant it anytime. Just remember the plant is actually a shrub, so leave some room for it to get big. Start planting now, and have a delicious winter. Remember, work less, enjoy more!

I medium yellow onion, coarsely chopped
2 garlic cloves, sliced
Coarse salt to taste

FIRE & FUNCTION Today’s Gas Logs Present Realistic and Entertaining Options By Mary Chavoustie
A
design glitch can occur with even the most creative geniuses, and Frank Lloyd Wright was no exception. A good example would be one of the fireplaces inside Wright’s architectural masterpiece known as Wingspread, the 14,000square-foot Wisconsin home just outside of Racine created for Herbert F. Johnson Jr., then president of S.C. Johnson & Son. For the man who many consider the greatest American architect of all time, fireplaces or hearths were an essential part of the design; they were, in Wright’s words, “the psychological center of the home.” In Wingspread, there are four fireplaces on the first floor and a fifth vertical fireplace on the mezzanine level. The vertical design was created for 8-foot birch logs to be able to stand upright, leaning against the back interior of the fireplace, no doubt in anticipation of a slow, maintenance-free burn. Unfortunately, upon first lighting, the logs burned at the base, only to fall, embers and all, onto the adjoining floor. The family’s quick thinking to toss the burning logs onto the back porch alleviated a possible disaster, resulting in the fireplace becoming decorative rather than functional.
26 house& home | November 2020 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
TODAY’S FIREPLACES Real Fyre’s Contemporary Series, complete with spheres, geo shapes and river rock designs, would have been Wright’s perfect “psychological center.” Available in “Epic Black,” “Graystone,” “Terracotta,” “Ivory” and “Santa Fe,” the nontraditional gas logs partner with a dual-pan burner system that best reflects the mix of flame and form. Those looking for another clean alternative to wood have the option of RH Peterson’s Fyre Glass for a more contemporary design or even a modern farmhouse setting. The product is fire-tested to 1,200 degrees without melting or discoloring and is available in a variety of colors. Wright chose “Cherokee Red” brick from the Streator Brick Co. and bands of Kasota limestone for the birch log fireplace at Wingspread. Today, hand-carved fireplaces from natural stone offer versatility and endurance. Cantera stone, made from volcanic tuffs, sandstones and limestone, can resist moisture and humidity and can equally serve within any outdoor setting.

Photo by Jordan Staggs/VIE Magazine model the fireplace manufacturer touts as “The world’s first see-through indoor/outdoor gas fireplace” requiring no chimney or venting. Heat & Glo’s PRIMO Direct Vent Gas Fireplace Series gives homeowners design freedom without compromise, allowing them to place a TV or artwork directly above the fireplace. The new patented SafeSurface Glass leaves no exposed seams, mesh or metal trim and stays cool to the touch. Houstonians often welcome their “winter blasts.” Thankfully, they can leave rock salt and shovels on the box store shelves, leaving more time to get comfortable by the gas logs.
