“It was a pleasure building our home with Matt Powers Custom Homes & Renovations; we worked closely with the whole team on every decision. I really trust their integrity and honesty. I appreciate the access and help they offered in all phases of our decision making. They accompanied me to the granite yards, brick yards, plumbing fixtures, etc. to answer questions I may have had as I made our selections. That was invaluable. We felt confident in our decision-making, knowing that their expertise would guide us in the right direction. Their standard of excellence has helped us create a beautiful home.” Kayle & Danny Miller

ecember has a way of reminding us that we are all human beings who appreciate being connected to others—no matter what your background or beliefs. With the weather turning just wintery enough, this month has our Gulf Coast bones craving hot cocoa by the fire and homemade soup on the stove. The lack of warm temperatures outdoors sends us looking for warmth indoors and in our hearts. Hosting holiday get-togethers and accommodating a houseful of relatives can push your kitchen and bathrooms to their limits. That’s one reason we publish our annual Kitchen & Bath Issue in December. While you’ve been gathering friends and relatives, we’ve been assembling the latest ideas and insights for updating and improving the look and function of these workhorse rooms. Efficiency is where it’s at in the kitchen. From conserving gas, electricity and water to streamlining food prep and clean up efforts, smart choices make all the difference. Strategies such as reworking a layout, investing in new appliances, upgrading cabinets and countertops can help a kitchen work for you rather than against you, which makes turning out everything from simple snacks to holiday feasts so much easier. Bathrooms function better when carefully planned. Whether utilized for a speedy pre-work routine or for hours of weekend pampering, spe-

cialized fixtures, faucets and floorplans can do wonders for a bathroom’s performance. You can read about one couple’s major kitchen and bath improvements made in our home feature this month. Robert and Ragna Case have owned their home in Memorial since the early 1980s and have remodeled and added onto their home numerous times as their family’s needs and tastes changed over the years. Most recently, the couple enlisted the expert help of architectural designers Joe Meppelink and Marisa Janusz of Framework Design, as well as interior designer Laura Michealides of Four Square Design Studio. This talented team collaborated to elevate the Cases’ home to a new level of beauty appeal, function and harmony. As you catch up and cut up with friends and relatives throughout December, it’s quite likely you’ll find yourself standing in a kitchen. We hope our Kitchen & Bath Issue inspires improvements that will make gatherings at your house more functional, so that holidays are less stressful and more enjoyable. Wishing you all peace and prosperity this holiday season. Sandra Cook Editor scook@houseandhomeonline.com Follow us on Facebook & Twitter

Auction of Fine Antiques on New Year’s Eve B Y H O L LY H U B B A R D
On the morning of New Year’s Eve, Gallery Auctions will hold its final auction of 2011. Much like the final parties of the year to be held later that evening, Gallery Auctions is doing it big, doing it extravagantly, and doing it right with a double estate auction containing notable pieces of Americana history, all of which must be sold outright with no minimums by the end of the auction, Gallery Auctions is sending 2011 out in style. Items for this auction include the estate of a true Southern antebellum home, along with pieces collected throughout the life and travels of a prominent Northeastern family responsible for bringing American Express to Europe. Living in Paris gave this family the opportunity to create an amazing collection of French furniture, china, and collectibles. This collection has been carefully cataloged with detailed lists, along with any available appraisals, to be provided prior to the auction. The items in this auction are so rare and unusual, they only surface with estate events such as this, and much like the end of the year, will be gone before we know it. Don’t miss this outstanding opportunity to make part of American history a part of your very own collection. Gallery Auctions will be kicking off the New Year with their regular Monday auctions on Jan. 2, but by the time the New Year rolls around, the amazing finds of this New Year’s Eve extravaganza will be long gone! Lynn Sessions first contacted me when Dolly Martinez at ICM Marble & Granite (her granite installer) put Lynn in touch with Shelterstyle.com and the contractor she used, Dick Leiker at Wood-N-Stone (www.woodandstoneremodeling.com). After listening carefully to her wish list and budget, I discouraged her from gutting her entire guest bathroom and instead suggested more budget-friendly ideas. “The early ’90s décor did not match my Tuscan style,” Lynn explains. “It was so white and there were bright brass finishes—I prefer an Old World look. The bath just looked even more dated after we finished the kitchen,” Lynn explains. She was most concerned about opening up the area above the tub and removing the furdown. TIP: Plan your remodel when your contractor is not overly busy.
Since she had worked with me on her kitchen, (“From Flood to Fantastic”, Houston House & Home, Sept. 2008), Lynn knew what to expect and that the redo was doable. Lynn picked the month of February, a time of the year which she had planned a lot of traveling for business. This worked out well,

because it is also a time when contractors are typically not too busy. Storage was not a problem in this bath since the room is used only sporadically by overnight visitors and is used more as a powder room for guests. I suggested she remove the low furdown ceiling over the tub and bring her Emser Tile all the way to the ceiling, which opens up the space and accentuates the room’s height, and to choose a tile that worked with the new, large-scale diagonal tile floor. Lynn was concerned with getting rid of the furdown and opening up the space above the tub. But since she had worked with the contractor before, she felt confident that everything would work out. TIP: Be consistent with hardware finishes—even on the toilet handle.
BEFORE
AFTER: Darker Emser Tile floors and shower tile, new granite countertop and vessel sink, dark paint on the vanity and mirror frame, darker paint on the walls and storage cabinet, and new oilrubbed bronze fixtures and hardware add texture and Old World charm to this bath. The toilet paper holder was relocated to the side of the vanity.
22
BEFORE: The bath was a boring “beigeout”, with too-small artwork and a toilet paper holder spoiling the large window wall. Bright brass fixtures and hardware did not give the Tuscan feel the owner wanted.

It’s all about splurges and saves—Lynn used Bed Bath & Beyond coupons for her shower rod and shower curtain, and bought the expensive Danze “Opulence” single handle deck mount vessel filler faucet, shower faucet set and towel bar on sale at The Great Indoors. The doorknob is from Home Depot. “I knew after our visit that I had a plan and could work at my own pace getting this completed. Since I was going to be gone so much that month, I decided to do the master bath remodel at the same time—I was pleasantly surprised at how much we could do with this room with high-end finishes on a pretty small budget,” Lynn explained. Lynn decided to replace the toilet and tub (purchased and installed by the contractor) and chose to paint the existing mirror frame to match the vanity.

She had the most trouble finding the right paint for the room, finally settling on flat latex Sherwin Williams “Croissant” SW 7716 because it worked with the stone sink, granite, floor tile and the hallway color. The existing cabinet over the toilet was first painted in “Croissant” and then glazed by the contractor’s painter to appear more “Tuscan”. TIP: Refresh existing cabinets with paint and hardware.
After emailing a few photos of sinks and faucets back and forth, Lynn called me back for a second meeting when the construction was completed to discuss the room’s finishing touches and artwork. Because the vanity was low to the ground, I suggested she paint it a darker color (Sherwin Williams “French Roast SW 6069 semi-gloss enamel) and add an above-counter vessel sink. Lynn kept sending me pictures of “wrong” glass bowls. We finally agreed via email that the chiseled travertine bowl she found at Signature Hardware.com with free shipping was the best one with her “Desert Amarillo” granite from Arizona Tile, installed by ICM Marble & Granite. Lynn had a definite idea of what she liked for the big stuff—like counters, tile and fixtures—but had a challenge putting the finishing touches, on the bath. “You bring it all to life and harmonize all the colors for me, even reminding me to use coupons for some of the items,” Lynn said. Changing the hardware from shiny brass to oil-rubbed bronze (Lynn used leftover knobs from her kitchen remodel which came from www.myknobs.com) gave her the Tuscan style she was after and coordinated with the prints she had brought back from Italy and had framed at
TRADE SECRETS • Think “green”— painting an existing vanity and storage cabinet repurposes them, keeps them out of the landfill and saves money, too. • To dress up an existing builder-installed vanity, paint it, add a granite top, new sink, faucet and matching oil rubbed bronze hardware. • Sometimes the most effective strategy is not to gut your bathroom, but to first rethink the pieces that are already paid for.
AFTER: New oil-rubbed bronze hardware, a built-in shower niche for toiletries and new Emser Tile in the shower added needed style to this bath.

Trends & INNOVATIONS
Need for performance and convenience merge form and function in the kitchen & bath Today’s kitchens are trending toward smarter space plans, energy efficiency, cooking technology, durability and green solutions. We asked Peggy McGowan of Kitchen & Bath Concepts to share her expert insights about current and coming trends for kitchens. With more than 25 years of experience, this Certified Master Kitchen and Bath Designer is also a member of the American Society of Interior Designers. “Kitchens and bathrooms are getting more contemporary in styling,” says McGowan. “Traditional looks are really now more ‘transitional’ with less heavy trim and moldings on cabinetry.” There are multiple trends in play when it comes to cabinet finishes. The National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) has noted deep, dark browns, such as chocolate and espresso finishes. McGowan reports much lighter colors are gaining popularity. “We’ve seen demand for neutral, natural woods and shades of white and pale grey,” says McGowan. “Sometimes these are high gloss, and sometimes they are punctuated by sharp contrasting colors in unexpected places, to create a wow factor.” Placement of cabinetry is taking on more variety. “Cabinets are not just boxes lined up on every kitchen wall,” says McGowan. Options include open, sometimes floating, shelves at staggered heights and positions. “Having fewer cabinets requires creative thinking about storage, so functionality and convenience are key,” she says. Clever conveniences include automated door-opening mechanisms for doors and drawers, especially trash pull-out.

The hefty, 5-cm StoneDesign countertop has an elliptical edge that softens its ample volume. The backsplash is Maljat Brown limestone and the vent hood boasts a lacquered glass cover. RIGHT: Attractive options for long-lasting, energy efficient LED lighting for under-cabinet, in-cabinet, appliance and overhead lighting applications. Photo courtesy of Kitchen Aid.
SURFACE STRATEGIES McGowan says her clients often choose countertops that feature either very thick or very thin edge detail. She also reports that while granite and marble still are top sellers, they’re getting rather commonplace, and since natural stone usually requires more care and maintenance, more people are opting for manufactured quartz materials (such as Silestone and CeasarStone) that are beautiful and virtually carefree. “Glass is an important design element for kitchens and bathrooms, adding reflective quality, material clarity, and sometimes color or sparkle to countertops, backsplashes, cabinet doors, vent hood canopies, etc.,” says McGowan. “Sometimes the glass is actually crystal, as in cabinet handles or pulls.” FUNCTIONAL FOCUS The big news in lighting is the expanded selection and visual quality of LED lighting. Look for under-cabinet lighting, inside-cabinet lighting, ceiling fixtures and more. Energy efficient LED bulbs and fixtures are very low-heat light sources, that provide extremely long lasting illumination – averaging 9 to 14 years before bulb replacement is required. “Appliances and plumbing fixtures are smart and stylish,” says McGowan. “Faucets turn on with a touch, refrigerators read barcodes on food packaging to let you know when you need to replace something inside – and almost read your mind.” McGowan has seen increasing interest in large single-bowl kitchen sinks. “We represent The Galley, a 5 1/2-foot long stainless steel sink (also available in 4- and 7-foot sizes), with two-tiers of accessories for maximum ease and efficiency for prepping and cooking meals,” says McGowan. “Chefs love it—home cooks want it. The Galley reinvents the kitchen.” She also reports that younger consumers want it all: function and convenience, style and beauty, easy maintenance AND affordability. “Manufacturers of kitchen and bath products are racing to reach the Gen Y market to meet their demands,” says McGowan.

SMARTER APPLIANCES We’ve researched the notable innovations in features and functionality of kitchen appliances that have become available over the past year, as well as those that will be on the market in the next year. In addition to energy and water efficiency, homeowners are looking to reduce waste in the kitchen – wasted space, food that goes to waste and time wasted. The NKBA reports that French door refrigerators are now the type specified most often by kitchen designers. French door fridges more popular than the next highest-rank styles, bottom-freezer models and side-by-side models. Among smaller units, refrigerator and freezer drawers are used by a third of designers, about the same amount as under-counter wine refrigerators, which the association says are now on the decline.
French door refrigerators, such as this one from Kitchen Aid’s Architect Series II, have become the most popular style for designer kitchens.

The NKBA also finds that induction cooktops are closing the gap with gas and electric models. Gas cooktops are specified by about twothirds of kitchen designers, down from about three-quarters in 2010. Electric cooktop popularity is up slightly, being used by about 40 percent of designers. Induction cooktops, used by about a quarter of designers in 2010, were used by more than a third of designers in 2011. “A huge trend on the rise is steam cooking, as our country looks to increase its consumption of healthier foods,” says Joe Gonzales, the Central South District Sales Manager for BSH Home Appliances Corporation. “Thermador is at the forefront of this, most notably seen in our Pro Grand Steam Range, considered our most crowning achievement to date.”

Thermador’s new flagship 48-inch range is the world’s first all-in-one cooking appliance to combine a steam and convection oven with a full-size convection oven, a sixburner gas rangetop with a grill or griddle option, and a warming drawer. Thermador entered the steam arena in 2010 with the introduction of the Steam & Convection Oven, what was then the luxury-appliance industry’s first pre-programmed appliance to combine three distinct cooking options — steam, convection and a combination of the two.
With induction cooktops, such as this one from GE’s Profile series, coils do not get hot, like traditional electric cooktops. Induction cooking requires cast iron or magnetic stainless steel pans to utilize magnetic fields to produce fast heating, improved thermal efficiency and greater heat consistency with precise control. Note: People with pacemakers may be advised by their doctors to avoid proximity to induction cooktops.

“We’re also seeing induction technology gaining popularity — the draw being its ability for instantaneous and precise temperature control combined with its penchant for safer cooking,” says Gonzales. Unlike gas cooking, induction uses a magnetic field generated by an alternating electric current to efficiently produce heat directly on the cookware, rather than transferring heat from the gas flames to the cookware. “Induction cooktops are also easy on the eyes,” says Gonzales. “With a black glass surface, or a mirroredglass finish, Thermador induction cooktops feature a modern, edgy, chiseled design that fits perfectly with today’s modern kitchens. Look for Thermador to unveil a revolutionary induction item in 2012.”

PhaseValue Memorial homeowners consider the remodeling bug a beneficial insect STORY BY MARY CHAVOUSTIE PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIRO DVORSCAK ay the word “remodel” and watch most homeowners cringe. Not Robert and Ragna Case. They’ve remodeled their Memorial village home four times, five if you count adding the pool, with a sixth being considered as this issue goes to print. “I’m the kind of person that likes to work on their house,” admits Ragna. “Every 5 to 8 years, we do something,” she smiles, “so it’s about time for another change.” Over the years, the couple has seamlessly reconfigured their original 1600-square-foot ranch-style home into a 3500-square foot oasis, in the heart of one of Houston’s most lovely neighborhoods. Their décor is spare and uncluttered, a respite from weighty antiques and knick-knacks that often take away from the clean lines of an older home. “We bought the house from the original owners in 1983, while the children were in grade school,” Ragna explains. “We fell in love with the neighborhood, the schools and the ease of commute for both of our jobs.” The 1950s house was typical of the day, complete with indooroutdoor carpet, harvest gold appliances and knotty pine in the den and kitchen. The first major remodel came in 1984, a move to retain the overall shape of the kitchen but an upgrade for the cabinetry and appliances. Ragna chose white laminate and white appliances, a style she admits faded quickly into design history. Years later, FRAMEwork design LLC owners Joe Meppelink and Marisa Janusz helped the couple establish a three-phase major remodeling plan. Phase One included updating the living room and creating a study, guest room and powder room. Interior designer Laura Michaelides, ASID, owner of Four Square Design Studio LLC, joined Meppelink and Janusz on the second phase two years later, designing and furnishing the master bath and bedroom. Michaelides recently completed Phase Three – the kitchen, laundry room and new lighting for the living and dining rooms. “Laura worked with us on the remodeling of our master bedroom and bath and did a fabulous job so I thought of her immediately (for the kitchen remodel),” says Ragna.
S
ROOM FOR COMPANY
During Phase One, architectural designers Meppelink and Janusz transformed the small, no-longer-used children’s rooms into a sunlit study and guest suite. The same limestone utilized in the extension of the living room was creatively incorporated into a portion of the guest bath. Tall mahogany pocket doors were added between the living room and the east wing, allowing for privacy, when needed. 54

Designer Laura Michaelides worked closely with the homeowners during the kitchen remodel, accomplishing what Ragna Case calls a “soft contemporary look—one that is welcoming to not only the chef, but equally to family and friends that gather. 55
Custom millwork, vaulted ceilings and stonework expanding the existing fireplace helped recreate the living room, a comfortable area to entertain and enjoy guests. The manicured backyard and pool offer a tranquil addition as viewed through the French doors and expansive windows. MASTERING THE MASTER SUITE
Aware of their clients’ propensity for books, Meppelink and Janusz created a floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookcase in the master suite, with ample room for a 60-inch TV. Michaelides designed custom night tables and also suggested a navy accent wall. Ragna acknowledges she was at first hesitant to use such a dark color, given the existing expanse of wood, yet trusted her designer and was more than pleased with the end results. A small sitting enclave was added, with solid garnet-colored chairs blends nicely with the patterned rug. The master bath is spacious and accommodating, complete with a built-in cushioned seating area that doubles as storage. Michaelides added a small glass-topped table to the space, a more forgiving resting place for morning coffee cups than the nearby white marble vanities. The bathroom flooring of light Crema Marfil marble has an Old World appeal, while a colorful framed mirror, a good example of the homeowner’s love of folk art, is set against a wood accent wall. The

The deep blue tile back splash, found at La Nova Tile, mimics the expanses of blue tile around the pool and, therefore, visually connects the interior of the home to the appealing outdoor spaces. The clean lines of the kitchen give it a modern feel, while the rich mahogany cabinets lend a warmer, more traditional sensibility. 57
“Meppelink and Janusz had a clean line, which blended with my eclectic mix—not too modern, not too traditional,” says homeowner Ragna Case. 58

Tile is used throughout the Case home, excluding the master bedroom. “I’m a big believer in tile,” says Ragna. “To me, it’s a lot easier to maintain than carpet and unifies everything.”
mirror is custom designed, comprised of tile that Ragna and Michaelides found at Architectural Design Resource. “Ragna has a great enjoyment of folk art and also enjoys living with furniture that she has inherited,” says Michaelides. “In working with her, I tried to create environments that would be true to her style and sensibilities, and that work well with the art and furniture that she has and enjoys.” NOW WE’RE COOKING
More room, more work space, more cabinets – it’s every homeowner’s wish and Ragna was no exception. In 2009, Michaelides implemented Phase Three, reconfiguring the kitchen area by removing walls that cut the space up into smaller, less useable areas, and designed the new kitchen, as well as the laundry room and breakfast area. The general contractor for this phase of the project was David Levy. At the time of construction, Levy constructed a false wall between the living room and the kitchen to alleviate construction dust and maintain some sense of day-to-day order for the family. Levy also brought in temporary plumbing, a sink, microwave and power for a refrigerator, making living in the house during the remodel much easier. Levy’s comprehensive remodel included demolition of the existing kitchen and adjacent walls, as well as the existing laundry room and
wall shared by the dining, living room and kitchen. He constructed new walls, rerouted plumbing and wiring to accommodate new appliances, and installed new lighting in the kitchen, laundry room and living room. Per Michaelides design, cabinetmaker Cal Trevino built custom mahogany kitchen cabinets. New floor and backsplash tile were installed, as well as new windows and doors. Choosing the right kitchen countertop, for both beauty and functionality, is often time-consuming. Ragna eliminated marble because of its care requirements. Granite was a possibility – something to play off the white floor tile and dark wood cabinetry – yet finding a not-so-busy match became difficult. She finally settled on a Caesarstone Quartz, adding a striking, dark blue backsplash tile – for just the right pop of color and tie to the rest of the home. Michaelides designed a small peninsula-type table for the breakfast area, a practical solution for the empty nesters. The U-shaped table was anchored to the window wall, and then supported with a mahogany tapered leg. Craftsman James Dawson wrapped the wood substrate top with zinc for a clean, modern contribution to the décor. Now complete, the wide, island-free kitchen has become one of the most well-loved rooms in the house as children and grandchildren gather each week for Sunday dinner. “I’ve done lots of remodels, and I have to say it was one of the most pleasant I’ve been through,” acknowledges Ragna.
59
Ragna’s spacious study invites dutiful work, yet the French door view of the backyard pool is always tempting.
REFINED DINING
The dining room is a favorite of Ragna’s. It is home to her display of delicate antique plates and bowls. Years ago, finding traditional plate hangers insufficient, she decided to enlist help for her own innovative idea. Working with a fabricator, she designed a transparent, fiberglass holder that blends inconspicuously with the wall, yet securely holds each piece without damaging their gold leaf accents. A lovely wooden shelf, another design by Michaelides, underscores the display, doubling as a practical serving area for dinner parties and an artistic focal point for the room. Dining room chairs incorporate a geometric design, playing off the pickled wood floor and linear slats of the shuttered windows. 60
Intertwining steel branches combine with what resembles crystal water drops – striking components of the chandelier. “Ragna and Robert are wonderful clients,” says Michaelides, “and I enjoyed working immensely with them, for both phases of the project. I tried to create environments that would be true to her style and sensibilities, and that would work well with the art and furniture that they have and enjoy.” So what’s the next remodel for the Case family? Only time will tell.

Universal APPEAL
By SHAWN GUSTAFSON
MIRO DVORSCAK
Through smart design, safety, comfort and style can live together in the same gracious bath If ever there were an all-American ideal, surely it’s the principle of freedom. But for aging adults, freedom has taken on new meaning as more and more healthy, energetic retirees seek out forward-thinking approaches to ensure independent living down the road. According to the U.S. Administration on Aging, by 2030, there will be about 71.5 million Americans age 65 years or older, comprising a whopping 20 percent of the population. For this group, retaining the dignity of self-reliance into their later years often means adding the security of basic aging-in-place features today. Part of the broader movement called universal design, aging-inplace refers to modern, elegant design that allows seniors to live comfortably and independently in their homes for as long as possible — a concept particularly important in the bath, where injuries are likely to occur. “Designing for the ages, or aging-in-place, has become the hot topic in the kitchen and bath industry in the last few years,” says Ellen Belcher, AKBD, CAPS. “This naturally makes sense because these are the two areas of the home where it is crucial for all individuals to maintain their independence and move about freely. Because of the design efforts made with products and appliances from manufacturers in the kitchen and bath industry, it has become easier for kitchen and bath designers to incorporate great, creative design that is aesthetically pleasing for accessibility and aging-inplace. These products that were functional and somewhat institutional looking are now functional and beautifully ‘on trend’ with what the consumer is wanting in their home.”
ABOVE: An age-inplace bathroom by Aston Design Studio. CENTER: Kohler bath faucet controls can be operated easily with one hand. LEFT: Moen’s Kingsly 24” grab bar is available in a variety of finishes, such as this oil-rubbed bronze finish.
66
SMALL CHANGES, BIG DIFFERENCE “The great thing about universal design is that it helps everyone,” says Marilee Kainer, ASID, RID, CAPS, of Libertas Interior Design Solutions, LLC. “These features are not only great for older or disabled persons, but for anyone who wants to live more comfortably. I think of it as smart design that is ‘one size fits all.’” Kainer suggests that since many universal design elements are inexpensive and easy to install, weekend warriors should take note. Simple solutions like changing out traditional door and sink knobs for lever-style handles and faucets means easier use by arthritic or injured hands, or even laundry-loaded arms. Handheld showers are another low-cost switch, and cater not only to seated bathing for

the elderly, but also the convenience of hosing down grubby kids and showers walls. Accessible and sufficient bathroom lighting is also key, and light switches with large, flat panels installed at a lower height make for an easy reach. Dimmers and motion-activated sensors aid accessibility as well, while adequate brightness from layered sources lights the way for aging eyes.
THIS PAGE: Accessible bathroom design doesn’t have to be visually unappealing. Attractive products from Kohler include the Elevance rising wall bath tub and Purist single control lavoratory faucet with straight lever handles. The cantilevered lavatories are installed at two heights to accommodate people of different statures or seated users. Kohler’s tub features a built-in grab bar.
REMODEL IT RIGHT Other fundamental aging-in-place features require a call to the contractor, and are often part of the proactive senior’s remodeling or new construction plans. However, these elements are desirable during any remodel, points out Carla Aston, ASID, RID, CAPS, owner of Aston Design Studio. “Certainly baby boomers and anyone with health issues would greatly benefit from them,” she maintains, “but all it takes is one unexpected surgery or an injury to put anyone in need of a grab bar or a wider door opening to accommodate a walker.” Aside from such structural factors as generous clearances at all passage points, today’s aging-in-place building blocks offer ample design choices. “It’s exciting to see that manufacturers have introduced so many beautiful products that combine pleasing design with needed function,” says Laura H. Scott, CKD, CAPS, owner and designer at Scott Designs/Transitions. Large, curbless showers with built-in benches do double duty in both promoting mobility and creating a luxurious, spa-like feel. Stylish grab bars, available in today’s most popular finishes, accent both the shower and toilet area and offer convenience for young and old alike. (Plywood blocking should be added behind sheetrock to ensure a sturdy installation.) Another favorite feature is a taller toilet, such as Kohler’s Comfort Height models, which sit higher than traditional toilets and make it easier on the knees to sit and stand. And comfort is a vital concern in the vanity area as well. “Cleverly designed vanities and sinks are now available that make it easier for wheelchair users to reach faucet controls and pull up under the countertop with proper knee clearance,” details ASTON DESIGN STUDIO, Kainer. Wall-mount sinks Carla Aston, 281.364.6633 and full-length mirrors are HEALTHLINK CONSTRUCTION, other user-friendly options. Eric Hansen, 281.578.3712

Tips from the pros For most of us, there will come a time when we just aren’t as flexible and able to bend as we used to be. “This may be hard to imagine but it will inevitably happen,” says Ellen Belcher of Smart Start Spaces. “So, why not incorporate great products and design features now that can help us gracefully and graciously age in the future?” Belcher and Eric Hansen, of HealthLink Construction, offer these helpful tips for retooling the bath. • “Grab bars in the wet areas and the toilet area are a no-brainer—and they are so attractive now,” says Belcher. “They come in a variety of sizes (from as small as 12") that can be placed vertically to the standard lengths that we are used to seeing.” She suggests brands such as Great Grabz, Kohler and Moen. • When adding grab bars to an existing bath, Hansen suggests using a fastener specifically designed for grab bars, where blocking does not already exist within the wall. He recommends fasteners by WingIt Innovations. • “Bath mirrors that pivot up or down can be adjusted for standing or seated use with the touch of a finger,” says Belcher. She recommends products by Robern, Restoration Hardware and Pottery Barn. • Hansen says bathtubs of any material can be modified to become a walk-in shower with minimal step clearance. He prefers the TubcuT method. • According to Belcher, handheld shower heads are more practical and useful for someone who needs to be in a seated position to bathe or for a young child who wants to show some independence and doesn't like the shower spray hitting them in the face from above. • Hansen also suggests improving clearance in tight spaces, such as widening narrow doorframes to accommodate wheelchairs and walkers and removing enclosures around toilet areas for easier accessibility.

National Association of Home Builders’ Certified Aging-In-Place Specialist (CAPS) program. She explains, “As with any project, it’s wise to consult an authority who can help make the building experience more efficient and personalized.” CAPS professionals, including remodelers, general contractors, designers and architects, are specially trained in the dynamics of designing and constructing barrier-free living spaces. Aston contends, however, that worry-free would be another apt description: “Having a beautiful, functional space where you’ve planned ahead to make things comfortable for yourself in any condition just takes one more thing off your plate to worry about if something does happen.”

KITCHEN+BATH Planning Guide
WORKBOOK
Good planning makes for a great kitchen or bath. Take the time to decide what you want, hire a professional who has experience and training in kitchen and bath design, determine a budget and go for it. Use this workbook to help you narrow your choices, and then give it to your designer or contractor so they can help you turn your dreams and ideas into reality.
The GE Café Line of appliances fits into most any style of kitchen.
DECIDE YOUR GOALS Why do you want to remodel your home? Number your reasons in order of importance, with 1 being most important, 13 being least. I need more space for storage I have plenty of space but it’s inefficiently arranged. I need more lighting/windows. I’ve never liked my countertops and want new ones. A major appliance/fixture is broken, so I may as well go ahead and redo the whole room. My family is growing with more children/grandchildren and I want space for them. The flooring is cracked/warped/ peeling, and I need a new floor. My health status has changed, and I need everything more accessible. l have pets and want a place to feed them and keep their pet food handy. I need more wiring for electrical appliances. I’m a techie and would like my kitchen to have wi-fi and maybe even a flat-screen TV. It looks dated, I’m tired of it, and I simply want to change the look of the room. Other reason: _______________ What, if anything, would you like to keep? Number items in order of importance with 1 being most important, 8 being least. color of the walls appliances cabinetry lighting floors sink furniture, such as an heirloom table or chairs the vintage or period look of the room so it complements the rest of the house THINK OF THE FUTURE How long do you plan to live in your house? Check one. Less than a year. I’m remodeling for resale. 2 to 5 years. Then I plan to move and/or upgrade to a new larger house. 6 to 20 years. Then I may downsize to a condo or high-rise. 20-plus years. I don’t plan to move from this house. SET YOUR BUDGET What’s the total amount you are willing to spend? Check one. Under $10,000 $10,000 - $50,000 $50,000 - $100,000 $100,000 or more Once you’ve set a budget, ask your designer or contractor for a realistic estimate of how much the remodel might cost. Determine your priorities so you know where to spend your money. What are your must-haves in the room? What can you live without? If you’re seeking a home equity loan for the remodel, don’t close on the loan until you know how much the entire project is going to cost.
