EDITOR’S NOTE
It’s time for a little bragging. And I don’t mind telling you that it’s for one of our advertisers. Without them all, we could not offer this magazine to you free of charge. So, thank you – to all who have advertised and continue to do so – for your support! It’s been our privilege this past year to introduce your talents and services to readers. But, it was MIB Remodeling (www.mibremodeling.com) that sent in Before and After photos of a bathroom they did for a client. Since it is our annual kitchen and bath planning issue, I wanted to applaud their efforts on a job well done. “They have told us we made it beautiful,” says Mike Scott, owner of MIB. The clients evidently met with MIB during the Cypress Home Show. Mike asked them questions but also listened to their needs and wants. His listening skills won him the job. He then worked with the client to design a workable and affordable plan. The clients said MIB worked within their budget to give them ample storage and a new shower, which replaced an old tub. A quick review of past client comments reveal that MIB certainly has a fan base. Written praise runs the gamut . . . that MIB is not only “a great company to work with,” but that they are “there from the beginning of a project until its completion.” Others appreciated daily or regular progress reports. Instead of showcasing entire homes this issue, we are running a feature of three types of kitchens, and a reveal of three different bathrooms. Kitchen and bath guru Peggy McGowen also shares tips to consider and use. Peggy, I might add, joins us as a regular columnist next year . . . so excited about that! Happy holidays to you all, Susan

BEFORE & AFTER
THE BEST OF JOETTA SAYING GOODBYE AND THANK YOU TO A FAVORITE COLUMNIST BY BARBARA CANETTI • PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANET LENZEN
Back in February, 2001, Joetta contributed the story titled “From Clinical to Cozy.” In the article, Joetta wrote, “This bathroom had been ‘modernized’ by a previous owner — the room was stripped of its wood moldings, fixtures and built-in storage, but mainly was stripped of its charm. Now this bathroom invites lingering.” Photography by Hal Lott. Interior Design by Margaret Mohr, John Kidd & Associates.
Joetta Moulden's mantra when it comes to home interiors is redesign, reuse, recycle, redo and reinvent. “You would be surprised at what another set of eyes can do. We can transform a room – with little or no cost,” says Moulden. After 15 years of writing a column, Before & After, for Houston House & Home, Moulden is stepping down to focus more on her business and clients. But for 30 years she has helped Houstonians change their surroundings by suggesting simple alterations and modifications. The native Houstonian says that as a teenager she would go to friends’ homes and rearrange the furniture in their rooms. Because her father was an architect and she lived in several “lovely” homes in the city, she was introduced early to form and fashion. After attending the University of Houston and working as a business writer and editor for the Chamber of Commerce and later an in-house publication for Houston Lighting & Power, she realized her real passion was her creative side of transforming spaces. She began writing for a variety of local and national shelter magazines and then in 2000, she launched her business “Shelter Style.” She also began the column for this magazine of showing readers how simple changes in a room make enormous differences in the look and use of a space. 22 house& home | December 2015 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
“I can walk into a room and see it finished,” she says, adding that an inexpensive investment like a can of paint sometimes can change a room and the personality of a home. She says she often walks into a room – for example a living room – and suggests moving the couch, repositioning chairs, rearranging art and repainting the walls. In a few hours, at almost no cost, the owners feel like they are in a new space. “A lot depends on the person and how open they are to change,” she says. “It is a fine line that I have to walk.” She prefers to work in the client’s home and in the space that is to be redone. “I don’t do well in blank spaces. I do better in furnished spaces because I can see what needs to be done easier in the furnished room,” she explains. “I can recommend adjustments that should be made and help them to transform the space.” “Because I believe strongly in reusing what is already there, I sometimes save my clients more than I cost them (for my services).” Her specialty areas are kitchens and bathrooms (“They turn me on!”), but she has assisted clients in redoing living rooms, dining rooms, kids rooms, master bedrooms, studies as well as outdoor spaces. She also works with Realtors in staging homes for resale.
ABOVE: A reader favorite project by Joetta from the May, 2006 issue of House & Home. Titled “Clean Sweep,” it featured Houston Public Relations maven Paula Murphy’s revamped kitchen in her 1920s era bungalow. In the article, Joetta wrote, “knowing Paula’s available funds, I knew that her desire for black granite counters would not only bust the budget, but also could overbuild the house. Instead, I suggested she buy inexpensive butcherblock countertops from IKEA and refinish and stain them deep mahogany — which saved her $1,800 right off the bat. Since she was planning to spend that money anyway, I recommended she take the savings and build in the refrigerator and extend the countertop, creating a niche for the microwave in the process, which would increase future resale value. I also suggested using inexpensive, scored beaded board panels, rather than real tongue-and-groove boards.“
ABOVE & RIGHT: January 2003’s “It’s All Black & White” featured a dated ‘60s bathroom remodel. Joetta wrote, “They were hopeful that their outdated, l960s bath could be freshened without breaking the bank. The homeowners disliked everything about the room. The yellow tile on the floor and the pinky-beige tile in the shower were very dated—even when they moved into the house in l984. The cabinetry was ugly, the drawers didn’t slide easily, the dressing table opposite the doorway was never used, and the cultured marble sink had cracked. About the only thing they wanted to preserve was the large storage closet between the tub and the dressing table.
23
Joetta’s June, 2008 article titled, “Adios, Eighties” illustrated how new paint, countertops, appliances and backsplash can transform a kitchen without breaking the bank.
“I believe if it’s paid for, let’s try to make it work,” she says. “The effective strategy is to rethink what is ready paid for and already there.”
She offers a few parting tips for readers of her column: • If you have a collection of items, group them together in one place rather than scattering them throughout the room or the house. • Let more natural light into the room – it makes it brighter and more cheery. • If you have variety of crystal items, they will be lost against a white wall. Instead, group them together on a table top where you can see them rather than on a bookcase. • Recover a sofa to give it a new look, but only if the furniture is to be saved for sentimental value. Otherwise, it usually is more economical to buy a couch in the new desired colors. • Paint the back of a bookcase a different color from the wall. It will make a huge difference in the room. In House & Home’s July, 2007 issue, the article titled, “Modest Makeover,” featured an outdated master bath turned sleek with added space, light and accessibility. 24 house& home | December 2015 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

Ceramic and Glass Tiles Remain Top Backsplash Choices But Contenders Abound BY MARSHA CANRIGHT
Details make the difference in a kitchen or a bath, and the backsplash is one design element that can rock or wreck a room. Choosing a backsplash for a kitchen or shower treatment can be overwhelming because the sheer number of materials, colors, and styles available is almost limitless. For kitchens, ceramic and glass tiles continue to top the national market, with natural stone as a third favorite, according to the 2015 survey by the National Kitchen and Bath Association. Mirror, metal or metal-look tiles are also gaining popularity for contemporary homes. Painted wallboard and laminate are less requested. “The main trend for kitchens is a clean, crisp look, very minimalist, with lots of neutrals,” says Wendy Stine with Crossville Tile & Stone, a major manufacturer and disAn artistic mosaic tile backsplash from Ann Sacks. 26 house& home | December 2015 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

tributor of backsplash materials, with showrooms in the Houston area. “Some customers add visual interest by placing tiles in a pattern, like herringbone, or using subway tiles with a beveled edge for texture, or framing with a pencil liner, but generally, we are seeing clean lines and very few accents, she adds. Greater Houston is an interesting market, suppliers say, because it combines a sizeable demand for cutting edge contemporary styles, especially in the inner loop, and an equally strong call for more traditional designs in the surrounding residential neighborhoods. For example, a more time-honored look that goes with cherry cabinets and paneled doors is travertine and tumbled marble, which Stine says is still a draw for backsplashes in more traditional homes. There may be a lot of choices but the kitchen and bath industry does not make changes as quickly as fashion or furniture. “For the homeowner, a kitchen is a long-term investment and for the manufacturer, it’s a long process to design and develop new products, so change is not rapid,” she says. Trends on the newer side include linear glass mosaics in solid colors and subway tiles in whites, warm grays, biscuit and black. “Along the coast, people want sea tones. We do a lot of white kitchens with a pop of color,” says Jamie Allum Pruett of Traditional Designs. “We have a new glass tile with seashells in it, and a rounded tile that looks like bamboo.” According to Pruett, travertine continues to be a standby for customers who want a more traditional, timeless look. Stine says other favorites for backsplashes, in line with the national trend, include the Ashbury Market Collection, Sonoma Decorative Ceramics and Antolia Bliss Glass,” she says. Showers follow a similar trend but on a larger scale. Ceramic and porcelain tile rule for showers and flooring, with natural stone coming in second. Leading colors are white, off-white, gray and other neutrals. Bathrooms are becoming more contemporary and showers are far more popular than tubs, especially large walk in showers, according to the 2015 Kitchen and Bath Industry survey. Ilse Benard, an interior designer in Galveston has two recommendations on choosing a backsplash. “Go with what you love. Right now I’m loving concrete tiles from Morocco, but it’s not for everyone,” says interior designer Ilse Benard. “Second, whether you’re working with a designer or doing it yourself, take your time. Try looking at lots of pictures, and compare style, color, cost and maintenance,” she adds.

Festive Holiday Table Settings for Every Home BY KAE BRUNEY
Elevate foods -- include a variety of color – to appeal to the senses.
’Tis the season for cinnamon spice and all things nice. The holidays are right around the corner, and we’re all looking forward to celebrating with family and friends. Setting your table helps set the overall mood and nurtures memorable times. Here are a few different ideas and styles that you can recreate in your homes this holiday season: SIMPLE AND INFORMAL WITH A SPLASH OF COLOR
Bring color to your table setting by picking seasonal berries or flowers. Woven placemats tie in the winter woods feeling perfectly. MODERN AND ELEGANT WITH WHITE CONTRASTING TABLEWARE
A non-traditional setup with a refined touch of nature. Candle sticks add a touch of elegance by bringing intimacy into the space, and adding a crisp linen runner and a large scale glass vase creates a dramatic floral centerpiece. Weave nature into the table setting by swapping traditional place cards for a small potted plant that guests can take home. Dramatic floral centerpieces create a luscious and elegant tabletop.
TRADITIONAL BUFFET STYLE SETUP FOR YOUR GATHERING
Meals for large parties are easiest served buffet style, which allows guests to dine as they please and eliminates the stress of accommodating everyone at once. Bring some warm texture into your buffet setup by adding table runners and draping table cloths. Mixing and matching your dinnerware adds visual interest to stacked plates, and functional groupings ensure guests can distinguish what to use for specific food. You can incorporate levels into your setup with tall candle sticks and short candle blocks. Don’t forget to welcome the scents of the season with flower arrangements or simple blossoms. Draping tables in a few complementary cloths evoke a visually interesting setting.
FUN FESTIVITIES WITH ALL THE RIGHT SURPRISES
Add a touch of twinkle to any gathering with a fun, quirky table setting. Surprise family and friends with brightly colored decorations and ornaments. This style is perfect for personalizing. Personal place cards are an easy way to make each guest feel special. Who knew paper could be so much fun?!

EXPERTS REVEAL PREFERRED LOCAL STYLES
WHAT’S COOKING
By Susan Fox According to Peggy McGowen, owner of Kitchen & Bath Concepts, the “less is more” approach seems to have taken hold of the Houston market. Today’s trends point to a larger focus on contemporary styling — even in traditional homes. “We’re seeing less elaborate detailing with kitchen cabinet styles, and simple but smart appliance designs,” she says. Yet, a liking for monolithic countertop profiles — along with top choices going for wood surfaces characterized with unexpected textures — give simpler design approaches a big boost. “It is still about creating one special focal point — whatever that might be — to give the kitchen that much desired “wow” factor,” she says. For countertops, many are choosing such woods as mesquite, cherry and repurposed planks.

It appears, for the most part, that they do. CONTEMPORARY MIXES WITH TRADITIONAL When Covington Builders invited interior designer Bradford Collier to do another home project with them, the directive was clear: push the envelope a little. The home is located in the very traditional neighborhood of West University. However, the builders wanted to infuse the interiors with a trending industrial modern style. Yet, it had to also convey a traditional sensibility in terms of design and look. Did they get the mix right? Some cooks might say it is the “proof of the pudding.” Or in this case, Collier’s kitchen; his recipe for industrial-traditional turned out a spot-on design that won West University’s “Best of Show” and “Best Kitchen” during a 2013 home tour. Collier’s interpretation flows easily. The stair-stepped furniture style cabinetry is steeped in traditional style yet adorned with industrial hardware, while the plastered vent hood feels sleek and

Connected to the kitchen is a long butler’s panty that feeds into the dining room. In that space are crisp modular shelves flanking a prep or wet bar sink. Additionally, the space accommodates a wine cooler, microwave and ice maker. “I did push the envelope, but I also satisfied traditional expectations,” he says.

MINIMALISM WITH A TWIST Architect Dillon Kyle accepted the job of renovating a whole house in River Oaks. The exterior footprint of the house did not change, but the kitchen was reworked. “The space was original to the 1980s house, but it was chopped up and rather dark,” says Kyle. A cabinet wall housing the former refrigerator and freezer were removed, along with a peninsula island. The pantry under the stairs was re-imagined and the adjacent butler’s pantry reconfigured. “The owner wanted to open up the space and create The pantry’s large stainless steel doors are by The Lone Star Rangehood Company. 48 house& home | December 2015 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

a clean, bright and fresh area in the house,” says Kyle. “All upper cabinetry in the kitchen was eliminated, and a few floating shelves were instead installed to convey an airy sense and to enlarge the room visually.” In keeping with the minimalistic aesthetic, a pantry found underneath the stairs behind large gleaming stainless steel doors lends space for appliances often typically kept on countertops, and for such over-sized items as cutting boards, platters and trays — not to mention food items. Open the doors and a pop of turquoise color radiates the mostly white kitchen. “Finding the right craftsmen to produce the stainless steel doors was a challenge,” says Kyle. “Each leaf is about 300 pounds, and the required hinges are a specialty item. The craftsman constructed one part of the door first to test and make small adjustments. Then, he built the second one to install.” Adjacent to the kitchen is a butler’s panty — more traditional by way of looks and service. It provides storage and display space for formal china and silver, in addition to providing a serving and staging place for entertaining. The butler’s pantry offers more traditional storage. Entering the picture at about this time was interior designer Cindy Aplanalp, owner of Chairma Design Group. She offered up the perfect solution that entailed incorporating soft discreet color on the countertops and a simpler design plan. She stuck with a more traditional floor to ground the airy look. Aplanalp chose a stunning porcelain waterfall countertop revealing muted gold movement for the island. The back countertops are of the same material. THREE DIFFERENT STYLES SET THE PACE FOR TODAY’S LOOKS
BATHROOM
By Susan Fox Bathrooms. These spaces are as personal as they get. So, it makes good sense to take a moment to think them out when planning a remodel or new build. HGTV — the place many still tune into for visual inspiration and for general “how-to” information — suggests style and function drive any such project. The TV gurus say the master bathroom ranks second to kitchen in terms of importance. With that said . . . two Houston-area bathrooms — along with one in the Texas Hill Country — are revealed in this month’s issue. Each offers ideas and even feeds the desire to do it “your way.” This bath by Sweet Lake Interior Design was completely re-arranged to become both a pretty and functional master bathroom.

Interior Designer Lori Toups-Fenton, owner of Sweet Lake Interior Design, shows off one that is a glamorous personalization suited for a resident living near Rice University. Sneller Custom Homes & Remodeling in The Woodlands shares their story of a custom home built back in the 1990s; one where the master bath seriously needed some updating. And, interior designer Nicole Winmill of NR Interiors talks about a new space she designed for a home located in Cordillera Ranch, a hill country development in Boerne, TX. REMODELED GLAM “It was a big space that didn’t make sense. When you walked into the room, you essentially walked right into the shower,” A stream-lined free-standing tub and a curb-less shower give a sleeker look to this bathroom.
says Fenton. The challenge for her team was working around the scalene triangleshaped windows. But they worked their magic, as seen in the photos. “The footprint didn’t change, but we did some removing and rearranging,” she says. They also had to re-locate plumbing in order to accommodate new placement for the toilet, shower and bathtub. “There’s so much going on in this bathroom that we opted for a cleaner look when selecting the tub and standing faucet,” she adds. Almost half of the room’s walls sparkle with

“His”side of the bathroom leads into a smaller, more masculine closet, made of walnut.
Friezes and decorative crown, furniture-style chests and armoires, along with metallic gray paint by Benjamin Moore, finish out the dressing room. It is so spacious and elegant that it does not even warrant the mere classification of being just a closet. His closet was built out in walnut to convey a more masculine feel. While a bit smaller, it does offer ample storage room for clothes and accessories. “Due to his hectic travel schedule, a specially designed cabinet — just outside the door of the main closet — was made to house his suitcase and hamper, making getting home and packing back up a much easier process,” says Matt Sneller. The bathroom itself sits in the middle of the space, with the individualized closets situated on either side. It features a new 72x42-inch air-jetted whirl-pool tub, two separate vanities situated across from one another, and a large frameless glass shower decked out in shimmering mother of pearl mosaic tiles. Mirrored-door towers, which house all electrical items as well as linens, flank each vanity sink. “They eliminate the need for separate medicine cabinets and a tangle of wires,” says Sneller.
The vanity on the left offers hidden, customized luggage storage. 64 house& home | December 2015 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

“One of the owners is an artist. She did the gold gilding on the decorative pieces in the bathroom,” says Sneller. The countertops are marble and the floors, which have radiant heat, are white marble tile. The entire lighting system is technology driven. Everything is pre-set, based on time of day. The budget range for this project: between $80,000 and $100,000. HILL COUNTRY CONTEMPORARY The design goal was to create a handsome, luxurious master bathroom for relaxing and enjoying hill country views from the large window located at the freestanding soaking tub. “I refer to the design aesthetic of this overall home as Hill Country modern,” says Nicole Winmill of NR Interiors. The planked-patterned floor is limestone, as is most of the wall. The wall tile framing the window at the soaking tub is a strong focal point. The tub was a last minute change out, according to Winmill. “Originally a solid limestone freestanding tub was selected for this bathroom, but due to the tremendous weight of a solid stone tub, it would have required Her closet in blue metallic is a work of art in of itself. Therefore, we selected a lighter weight, solid-surface tub that didn’t require extreme measures for installation.” The floating walnut vanity with floating shelves above to one side, as well as the lower storage shelf, offers a contemporary clean-lined look. The frameless wall-to-wall mirror, set into the tiled wall with sconces mounted on top of the mirror, again emphasis the dominate horizontal lines of this tranquil escape. Tips/Trends from Kitchen & Bath Guru Peggy McGowen, owner of Kitchen & Bath Concepts ( w w w.kitchen-concepts.com) • Consider extended household: aging parents and friends. Can they utilize the guest bath comfortably? Curb-less showers, lower vanities, and roomy spaces are often more accommodating. • Consult a specialist. Remodeling is too expensive not to get it right the first time. • There is a strong move toward more contemporary styling — even traditional homes feature more sleek, simple design elements. For example: less cabinet style detail and monolithic countertop profiles.

DESIGNER PROFILE
Alyce Giebels Heather Alyce Design/MCD Houston WWW.HEATHERALYCEDESIGN.COM • WWW.MCDHOUSTON.COM
She especially favors kitchen and bath projects.
Giebels says her signature touch is color. There is ususally a pop here and there.
Are you from Houston? What part of the city do you call home? I am originally from Dallas, but came here in 2001. I live in the River Oaks area – in a condo that I love. And I have an amazing studio in the heart of West U. Both are ideal, as everything is 5 minutes away. I have been here for 15 years and have been fortunate to grow as a designer and small business owner. I love Dallas and miss it every day because my family is there. But, I love Houston too. I have met so many wonderful people here. Both feel like home to me now.
thing that could have happened to me. Every year has been bigger and better than the last.
How and when did you get started in the business? What parts of the Houston area/region/country do you serve? I have done design work in other cities around the country. But primarily my business in focused on Houston, Austin and Dallas. My first job was in commercial design, working for a national shopping mall builder until around 2000. Afterwards, I moved to Houston and took a position as the design coordinator for a multifamily firm. Eventually, I moved into residential interior design and began doing home models – selecting all the finishes with buyers. I worked with builders in Dallas, Houston and Chicago until 2008. Like a lot of people in the home building industry though, I lost my job that year. So, I decided to start my own interior design firm, which celebrated its seventh anniversary in October. It was the best

What was the last completed project you did? What was the scope, the challenges, the successes? I just wrapped up a 16-month long renovation of a Heights house. The house is more than 100 years old and I was the general contractor as well as working with the owner on the design. Old houses are always challenging because you never know what is coming next. But, it was amazing, too. The house was an uninhabitable wreck when they hired me. Today it is one of the prettiest on the block! And they let me into their lives and trusted me with that. It was an honor and that is success. What type of projects are you drawn to? What am I not drawn to? I love everything. But, I guess my top two areas would be kitchen & bath renovations and any facet that involves wallpaper and fabric. Do you have a signature touch or look? I would say that the signature of my style is that it is always clean and always has some color. I steer clear of fussy, cluttered or too neutral. Also, a client pointed out to me a few years ago that I only choose solid-colored sofas. I had never noticed before, but she was

right. When I really thought about it, I realized I do that because they are timeless. That is the one place where I stay neutral. And, then, of course, add color to the room with drapery and pillows.
space. Working with a designer will save you time, money and stress in the long run. Start by looking for someone that has photos in their portfolio similar to your tastes. And then ask for an upfront paid consultation. This will often only run you a few hundred dollars. But, you get the chance to bounce ideas off a professional before fully committing to a long term hire.
What are the top three design trends that you keep seeing? 1. GOLD has been all over the design scene for several years now. But it has just recently flooded the mainstream and is everywhere these days. But this is not your parent’s “Ugh! Shiny Brassy Gold” This a deep, muted gold that feels warm and rich. I do not expect the trend to fade anytime soon. 2. WALLPAPER is everything! It can transform the most awkward, boring, uninspired space into a breath taking show stopper. And the wilder the pattern the better. 3. MID-CENTURY MODERN. I know the mid-century thing has been going strong for quite a while. But, it seems like it reinvents itself every season with a fresh take on the era. What are your mainstays and what trend do you think will never go out of style? Black. Black will always be the new black. It has a distinguished and timeless elegance that anchors the room in every type of décor, from modern to country to traditional and back again. And White. White is a chameleon that can go anywhere and be anything. What advice would you give someone thinking about working with a professional? I would say assess your project and know what you are getting yourself into with it. So many people think they can go it alone when redoing their kitchen or bath only to find out they have no idea what they are doing. Or they come to me AFTER they have bought the new sofa that is completely the wrong size for their 74 house& home | December 2015 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
What is your own personal design style? I tend to gravitate toward a more modern aesthetic. As I mentioned previously, I think it is the uncluttered aspect of it that appeals to me. Definitely a warm modern though. Nothing too stark or cold. In general, I like clean lines and a good balance between positive and negative space. And color! I love color! What national or world-renowned designers do you turn to for inspiration? Dorothy Draper. She paved the way for interior design. She was always pushing the boundaries and looking for inspiration in the world around her. Her rooms were very over the top and grand. But, when I need inspiration, her photos of the past still seem to have a connection to the present. Whether it is a color she used or the way two patterns are mixed, there is always something. Her attention to detail was amazing. And, she is famous for saying “If it looks right, it is right.” I really believe that too. If it looks good and functions well, then that is all that matters. What is the one thing you cannot do without? My Ipad Mini. I am on it constantly. I have an app on my Ipad called Zinio. It holds all of my magazine subscriptions in a cloud. I love it. I can and do look back through several years of each magazine on a daily basis.

BREAKER BREAKER, ONE-NINE! THIS IS ROSCO, WON’T YA COME OWWWN BACK?! I’m a 5-year-old terrier cross dawg with a heart of gold and a CB Radio lovin’ swagger! I came to the HSPCA in February, weighin’ in at 55 lbs. After spendin’ eight months at my foster home, I lost about 20 pounds. Now, I still have some weight to shed, but I’m a funny, smart, outgoin’ feller who is mostly house-trained and I know how to use a doggy door. My other canine trucker friends get me excited and I can get a little “barky” when we play and talk about the good ol’ days on the road. I’m great with kids and they like me, too. I’m better on a harness than a regular ol’ collar, and I really enjoy goin’ out and explorin’ the trails. I know lots of commands like “sit,” “stay” and “down,” and love to play fetch. I acquired my newly trimmer physique by eatin’ Hill’s Healthy Weight formula, and when Hill’s shared the HSPCA’s pictures of my progress, it was their most viewed, shared and liked social media post ever. Boy howdy, who’d a guessed? Won’t ya come on back and tawlk tuh Rosco? Over...and out.
