at two of the hardest working rooms in the home, our kitchens and bathrooms. Practicality and function are critical for making our daily lives easier, but there’s no reason why these spaces can’t be beautifully designed as well. If you’re building a new home or making plans for a renovation, our Kitchen & Bath Planning Guide offers a great place to start. Take a look at a quartet of chic and beautiful kitchens and, after trying to decide which one is your favorite, marvel in the fact that they were all conceived by Chairma Design Group. Small Spaces: Big Design takes a look at how wallpaper and bold paint can transform even the smallest of spaces. Our guest expert, Jennifer Barron, also shares her tip for creating a commonly shared narrative throughout the home. Our last feature digs deep into glamorous and luxurious bathrooms. We all start and end our days in these intimate spaces and creating a spa-like environment goes a long way toward better living. Go ahead, indulge yourself. Kitchen cabinets form the framework for any good kitchen, and Canaima Design’s Lena Statsenko shares practical tips about the importance of planning in creating a functional and beautiful design; read more in Project. Furnishings are

equally important: In Editor’s Picks you’ll find our faves when it comes to tables, barstools and sideboards for the kitchen and dining room. When it comes to the newest trends, all eyes were on Paris Design Week this fall. See what’s new from European and American distributors when it comes to fixtures, vanities, toilets, mirrors and showerheads. Hint: Several of these are smart options compatible with Siri and Alexa. The holiday season is here and our Calendar section has all the details about Christmas home tours and holiday events throughout Houston and surrounding areas. Holiday lights, anyone? We know you’ve got entertaining on your mind. Whether gifting, serving or exchanging, sweets are always welcome during the holidays. Get a little help from a nearby bake shop or glean inspiration to create your own scrumptious treats like the gingerbread cookie recipe we’re sharing from Ooh La La Dessert Boutique; read more in Recipe. Thinking about flowers for a centerpiece or your next special occasion? Head over to Avant Garden at ROD, the new European style flower shop from Todd Fiscus that also offers a few Instagram-worthy moments. Check out our pics in this month’s Gardening section. HANDLE WITH CARE Creating a Beautiful Kitchen Begins With a Good Design Plan

B

efore designing a kitchen space it’s important to think about it in practical terms: its function and usability. It’s natural for family members and guests to congregate in the kitchen for conversation and fellowship, so there is a high demand for open floor plans with no walls separating the kitchen and living room.

Planning Makes Perfect Because cabinets are built-in and not easily replaced, it’s important to invest in high-quality cabinetry whenever possible. With

20 house& home | December 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

a more limited budget, consider delaying some of the other elements of the kitchen so that the right cabinets can be installed during the build or renovation. If a designer creates the interior concept he or she will plan the details and order the homeowner’s ideal kitchen: comfortable, beautiful, and according to the rules of ergonomics. Homeowners who want to tackle their own remodel should consider from the outset all of the aspects involved in a kitchen design, including the type of cabinetry, opening mechanisms, facades and hardware.

For this luxury high-rise in the Museum District, the design team selected European-style cabinetry with hidden hinges and alder doors with a Porch Swing stain. Dimmable LED lighting was installed under the upper cabinets. Photo by Paralel

Designers will think about each and every small detail to make life easier. Which way do the cabinet doors open? Will the chosen handles stick out and block other doors and drawers? Is it convenient to open the upper door mechanisms or is the handle out of reach? Whether cabinetry is custom made or ready to buy, all these factors should be considered during the planning and design process. Even the tiniest of kitchens can be made fully functional, while larger kitchens can be designed to reflect natural pathways. Cabinet placement and design also are important from an aesthetic standpoint, and should be in line with the homeowner’s cooking habits. There are standard dimensions for both modular and built-in furniture, with manufacturers offering a variety of colors and finishes. Buyers generally choose beige or dark wood, while designers often experiment and combine finishes and hardware. With this approach even the most basic modular furniture can become outstanding. For example, designer handles will create a unique look but there also are 22 house& home | December 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

technologies that avoid handles altogether. Simply push the door with hand or knee and, voila, the door will open automatically. Also popular are the full-extension cabinet drawers that slide out completely, something not typically found with traditional drawer function. When it comes to closing a cabinet door, there also are mechanisms that slow the movement right before closing while also ensuring the door is flush with the facade.

A Place For Everything To maintain order within the cabinets, engineers have invented a variety of organizers, including trays and dividers. These smaller spaces allow plates, forks and pans to remain in their places while also keeping the countertop clean and uncluttered. An L-shaped kitchen layout creates a corner space that is often large and mostly unused. Fortunately, there are various ways to maximize space within a corner cabinet, allowing items to be easy delivered from the hidden corners by way of swivel-

retractable trays and carousel shelves. These technical miracles are not inexpensive but provide a very necessary functionality. One way to use narrow gaps is to fill them with rolling vertical cabinets that can store bottles and cans. Another option, for those who don’t have enough counter space, is to insert an additional surface under the main surface. This can be moved out for cutting bread and vegetables, will serve as temporary storage for plates and cups, and can create an additional tray for snacks.

Modern Minimalism

Tiny spaces call for big ideas. A soft color palette on the cabinets of dusty rose and sky blue, as well as hidden appliances, make this kitchen fresh and soothing. Photo by Alexander Romanenko

Popular in modern design are kitchens that don’t have any wallmounted cabinets at all. Alternatively, especially for those who have a large amount of kitchen appliances, an attractive look is to build a wall of cabinets without a visual separation between top and bottom. One advantage for this is that household appliances can be stored at chest level — the most convenient place for small ovens and microwaves — so that homeowners don’t have to bend down or reach high for a hot dish. This option also is attractive for those who don’t have a separate pantry where objects can be hidden away and out of sight. Current trends call for clean lines, thin countertops and more bold colors. When it’s not possible or practical to keep the kitchen tidy at all times, one way to quickly hide the mess is by installing large doors that can close like a wardrobe. Everything is kept out of sight so that you can clean the kitchen on your own schedule.

Illumination

(L to R) Yesely Love (left), Deniss Labrador, Lena Statsenko (right) from Canaima Design Photo by Sam Sa

LED lighting can make a homeowner’s life easier and more comfortable; mounting them under the upper cabinets will create task lighting for the countertops and work area. Lights incorporated inside the cabinets make it easy to find items quickly and they can be activated by opening the door. A soft illumination behind the glass facades gives volume to the entire room and lightness to the massive structures, even in the tightest of spaces.

Kitchen and living area are divided by a table top which continues from cabinet counter top. Upper level cabinets are in white glossy finish, in contrast with lower level in wood. This makes white cabinets disappear, it makes the space seem larger. Photo by Alexander Romanenko 24 house& home | December 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

BAIN de LUXE New Trends Include Floating Fixtures, Smart Showers, and Towel Free Options

T

he key to any bathroom design is to carefully combine style with functionality. It is important to have a fashionable bathroom, but they can be expensive to redo, so make sure that decisions made for vanities, showers, commodes and even walls are the best choices for the style and use. Trending this year are wall mounted toilets and vanities. These floating fixtures give lighter and brighter looks to traditional spaces. The wall mounted toilets are fixed into a steel frame hidden inside the wall. They boast a modern design and take up less room in the bathroom. In addition, those nooks and crannies where dirt and dust can accumulate are gone. Look beyond the white, as well; Kohler’s Shadows collection introduces indigo blue, black plum, and lavender hues to bring a modern flair to commodes. The floating vanities, like those made by Porcelanosa, also give dated bathrooms a newer, more industrial aesthetic. These counters are bolted into the wall, giving the room a more streamlined look. 26 house& home | December 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

Also, the floor below is easier to keep clean because there are no pipes or legs to work around. In keeping with the more industrial look – designers are shying away from the glitzy chandeliers and opting instead for heavier fixtures with an almost masculine aesthetic. Pipes are exposed, darker colors are selected for at least one wall to convey depth, and easyto-clean matte finishes on the faucets are giving bathrooms a more textured look; these warmer finishes mix well with marble and other stone vanities. Franz Viegener’s new Nerea and Lollipop handles are minimalistic and available in knurled, diamond, vertical line, or horizontal ring styles. Or, for a chic look, consider THG Paris’ blush-toned faucets and accessories; it’s a trendy finish that falls between rose gold and the more traditional copper. The matte look is also being selected in tile: honed and duller surfaces are preferred, as well as skinny tile that gives a fresher look than subway tile. And designers are recommending staggering or

stacking the tile, as well as installing them vertically instead of horizontally. The tile should make a statement! In addition, creating artwork with the tiles, marble or mosaics adds a nice (permanent) touch to the bathroom. Frequently it is possible to purchase “bookends” – matching marble or granite that mirror each other and create a natural art piece. Another new trend is the wet room, where both the glass enclosed shower and the bathtub reside. One option is to put both behind a glass wall with no doors or walls, creating a clean, open spa-like bathing area. This can be built with no shower dam or curb, as long as the floor slightly slopes down to a drain; a nice plus for persons with mobility issues. And if the wall goes up to the ceiling, consider installing a steam shower as well. Newport Brass’s new Luxnetis showerhead controls the speed, movement and size of the water droplets, providing both greater coverage and the feeling of more water. Smart technology has arrived in the bathroom, as seen in Kohler Konnect’s DTV+™ system that delivers a personalized showering experience, while ThermaSol’s smart shower system integrates with Amazon Alexa and controls water, steam and light.

DTV+™ shower system with Kohler Konnect app manages sound, water, steam and lighting.

Although many people love them, large, jetted tubs are becoming less popular, as designers are opting instead for oldfashioned looking clawfoot tubs or standalone tubs with sleek curves. The exteriors are sometimes painted in a variety of colors while maintaining the white porcelain interior, a treatment that adds another dimension to the bathroom and puts a modern spin on a classic fixture. Another new trend in bathrooms points to the mirrors. Two styles are emerging: metal frames or frameless mirrors, which don’t collect dust and are easy to wipe down. And the shape and size of mirrors are changing: rounded edges seem to have a softer look than the traditional rectangular mirrors. For a personal touch, look to Kohler’s Verdera® Voice Lighted Mirror with Amazon Alexa; play music, get traffic updates, adjust the lighting for makeup, or dim it for night-

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a processor, mix together butter and sugar with the paddle attachment on medium speed, scraping down the sides occasionally, until very light and fluffy. Add the egg and mix well on medium speed. Once the egg is incorporated, mix in the molasses. In another large bowl, add all dry ingredients and combine until incorporated. Slowly add dry ingredients into butter/sugar mixture on low speed until all ingredients are incorporated. Be careful not to over mix! Refrigerate dough for 30 minutes to one hour. Portion out cookie dough into balls and roll in coarse sanding sugar. Allow the cookie dough to come to room temperature and then press down dough balls slightly. Space evenly on a baking pan lined with parchment paper. Bake at 350 degrees for ten minutes, then turn pan around and bake for an additional ten minutes or until cookies are golden brown. Yield: Eight large or one dozen medium cookies

CHIC AND BEAUTIFUL These Four Kitchens Share One Thing in Common: Good Design By BarBara Canetti

o our kitchens reflect our personality? The answer is a resounding yes when it comes to good design. One of our favorite pastimes is looking at a gorgeous photo spread and playing the game, “which would I choose,” a fun endeavor that we’re sharing with Houston House & Home Magazine readers. This month we’re taking a look at four very different kitchens, all beautifully done but with distinctly different styles. There’s a sunshine-yellow and white kitchen with globe lights, bench seating, and plush armchairs anchoring a

rustic farmhouse table. For a more sophisticated look, we’ve got a Bellaire remodel that incorporates a furniture quality sideboard, luxe upholstered chairs with nailhead trim, a posh wine bar and dark-stained beams on the ceiling. As functional as it is gorgeous, the project also incorporates a large pantry and small desk for bill-paying or researching recipes. But before you decide, there’s another remodel that relies heavily on texture: the herringbone floor, old world pantry door, live edge center island and wood ceilings balance

There’s much to adore with this sophisticated Bellaire kitchen that has been remodeled with the perfect balance between dark and light cabinetry. Photo by Analicia Herrmann

“I’m always looking for better ways to do tasks that support my clients and make that space beautiful to boot.” — Cindy Aplanalp-Yates, Chairma Design Group beautifully with the chic crystals on the chandelier and glass-fronted hutches. Last but never least is a remodel in The Woodlands that combines dark and light tones with a stunning brick accent wall. Don’t worry — we had trouble picking a favorite too — but the most interesting part is that Chairma Design Group is responsible for all four of these projects, which only goes

to show how good design works best when professionals take into account the taste and needs of the client. Cindy Aplanalp-Yates, principal of Chairma Design Group, says when it comes to remodels she “loves to see what’s not working in their current kitchen.” “That’s the best clue as to what they could really use and enjoy. We look at their inspirational pictures to understand

35

what’s beautiful to them and we see how we can improve their lifestyle and help them enjoy their home more,” she says. For instance, for the Bellaire remodel she designed a large kitchen in two parts: the public area with white cabinetry and an island that opens to the spacious dining room and a wet bar. But off to the side is a huge working kitchen with the stove, an expanded and organized pantry, and lots of storage. The whiteness of these rooms is broken up by dark wood tables, ceiling beams and large chandeliers over the bar and dining table. “Kitchens are very technical and a demanding environment, so I’m always looking for better ways to do tasks that support my clients and make that space beautiful to boot,” she says. While the textured remodel relies on an all-white kitchen, Aplanalp-Yates chose light colored woods for the ceiling, floor and open island. The stained woods of the classic wine bar create a defined space within the lighter tones of this Bellaire remodel. Photo by Analicia Herrmann 36 house& home | December 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

While we’ve seen the sophisticated public side of this Bellaire remodel on pages 35 and 35, Chairma Design Group also created a working kitchen with an expanded and organized pantry, plus lots of storage, in their own defined areas. Photos by Analicia Herrmann “This remodel features a repetitive element of natural wood for a cohesive, warm and inviting atmosphere,” says Aplanalp-Yates. The open shelves and generous pantry once again give homeowners an organized workspace and is comfortable for more than one person cooking or prepping. “I’m a fan of super pantries, one that often has a second fridge, double wall ovens, a sink and even a second dish-

washer. It’s a place where you can leave out your juicers or air dry your bottles,” she says. For The Woodlands kitchen she helped design, the update introduced more counter space, a double island, beautiful pantry door, brick wall and a stunning ceiling — a design that checked off many boxes for the homeowner. The design includes an arch over the refrigerator and two dark wood

Dark leather barstools and four large black chandeliers populate the kitchen and create a foil against the softness of the adjacent dining room. As for the sunshine-yellow and white kitchen, it was designed for 2017’s Southern Living Showcase home and sits off the second hole of Tiger Woods’ Bluejack National golf resort in Montgomery County. Aplanalp-Yates chose Good Morning Sunshine 326 from Benjamin Moore’s Classic Color collection to pair with the light natural wood ceiling and three large windows, making this room light and bright all day long. A quartz-topped island and a quintet of

glass orbs over the nearby dining room table finish the look. Just off the main kitchen is another catering kitchen with pantry, plus a second refrigerator, dishwasher and oven. When entertaining, homeowners can prepare meals from the service kitchen and then close the pocket doors to keep the mess out of sight and out of mind. “I’m really striving to create a space that they love being in — especially if there is more than one cook. I’m using larger sinks with two faucets so two people can have access to water for different tasks,” she says. “This is the perfect place for two people to work from.”

For the Briar Meadow project, Jennifer Barron selected bold paint for the living and dining rooms, calling on midcentury accents to connect the spaces, such as the Hollywood Regency style gilt metal leaf parasol light (left) and the sunburst mirror and chandelier (right).

SMALL SPACES: BIG DESIGN Wallpapers and Small Touches Make Big Differences in the Home Story by Sam byrd | PhotoS by molly Culver

I

f big things come in small packages, then great design can transform even the smallest of spaces into a boutique-sized stunner. Jennifer Barron, owner of Jennifer Barron Interiors, recently worked on two different properties that exemplified this rule — Briar Meadow and Annapolis — each with an owner who had a unique desire for the home’s polished interior design. Briar Meadow’s previous owner used mostly beiges and whites. Barron looked at it as a blank slate ripe for creative design. The client told Barron she loves colors and patterns,

44 house& home | December 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

which gave her plenty of imaginative range. It also helped that the client is a creative type who makes jewelry and produces art, so Barron knew the sky was the limit. “What makes a designer and home stand out is pushing the limit and being bold and unique from anyone else’s house on the street. People hire me to push them, and that’s where I start out. In this case I got lucky, and she went for it,” Barron says. Briar Meadow had a youthful, almost midcentury feel with a touch of retro. In keeping with that style, the design-

For the Annapolis project, Jennifer Barron blended the homeowner’s antiques with new furnishings to create a transitional space filled with pattern and color. The upholstered chair is covered in Ayesha fabric from Lisa Fine Textiles.

“Wallpaper is my favorite medium to use, especially in a small space because it can be bold and fun.” — Jennifer Barron er brought in animal and Indian print rugs, neon colors and midcentury lighting. Touches like the Bungalow 5 mirror and wallpaper from Kravet in the entryway enhance the look, as does the Ro Sham Beaux chandelier in the breakfast area, the Pindler draperies, the Samuel & Sons trim in the study, and the Pierre Frey pillows in the master bedroom. Animal print wallpaper in one room fits nicely with accessories in other rooms such as animal print pillows and a deer head mount for continuity. Annapolis, while still small, was a different story. The

client was moving from River Oaks and downsizing to a bungalow in West University, so every detail mattered in the abode’s overall design. The owner wanted to keep only what she loved and have Barron put the interior look together, with a few additional updates. “What’s cool about Annapolis is the client owned a lot of antiques, so I was able to mix a lot of old and new to create a transitional space,” Barron says. “I brought in tons of patterns and color. Wallpaper is my favorite medium to use, especially in a small space because it can be bold and fun. It

45

RIGHT: We’re crushing on the Malibu 8 beaded chandelier from Ro Sham Beaux. gives you so many options to set that tone than using paint or art.” Annapolis was more traditional and more English in the way that it was styled and with the owner’s antiques. Barron started by painting the kitchen with Benjamin Moore’s Normandy Blue, a step that set the expectation for the rest of the house. The designer brought in florals and birds in the bathroom wallpaper to remain soft on the eye. The master bedroom centers around purple bedding from Lettrefina. Never afraid to mix patterns and prints, Barron installed 46 house& home | December 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

Fireclay tile in the bathrooms, along with Alabaster paint from Sherwin-Williams and wallpaper from Schumacher in the powder room. The guest bath has wallpaper from Farrow & Ball, while the den utilizes goods from Lisa Fine Textiles on the chair. For both properties, Barron carefully chose each color and texture to create a commonly shared narrative throughout the home. Despite the penchant for eye-catching colors, she still stays within the boundaries of each home’s character and finds value in weaving the theme from room to room.

Color and pattern created unexpected pops in the Annapolis project, with herringbone flooring from Fireclay Tile (left), and a surprising match between the bird and flower wallpaper and Indian print rug (right). “I want the color and the pattern to be an unexpected pop, but I want it to flow with the space. The wallpapers are different from Annapolis to Briar Meadow, but they work in the spaces. Annapolis was traditional; Briar Meadow was a more contemporary pattern. There’s a wallpaper for every space in every home, but I like to keep it consistent with the other design elements of the house.” For small spaces like a hallway or bathroom, Barron again recommends taking advantage of her not-so-secret weapon: wallpaper.

“One thing I always tell people is that it really isn’t an old-fashioned thing. Wallpaper is back, in full force. A lot of people are scared to take that plunge because it seems retro or old-fashioned, but it adds such a layer to a space that paint can’t do,” Barron said. “It can range from subtle to loud, and even the subtlest adds dimension to the space.” Bottom line? Don’t be afraid to mix patterns and prints, and venture outside your comfort zone to experiment with bold paints and designer-approved wallpapers.

INDULGE YOURSELF Why Stop at Function When a Bathroom Can Be Glamorous and Luxurious By Katricia Lang

F

irst and foremost a bathroom must be functional: solid plumbing, sufficient storage, counter space for the toothpaste. But it also can be so much more. It should be your favorite place to start and end your day, says designer Cindy Aplanalp-Yates, founder and principal designer of Chairma Design Group. She believes your bathroom should also make you feel good. It should excite you. Designing a perfect bathroom depends on how the client wants to feel in the space. She considers whether or not they are a shower or tub person and how they use either. Are

52 house& home | December 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

they an in-and-out person or is bathing and showering their leisurely pleasure? Better yet, are they looking for a place to enjoy a favorite book, glass of wine, and a deep soak? Everyone has an ideal way of relaxing, says AplanalpYates. Some of her clients even add a television to the bathroom. And some want to have more than just fun. They need a place to get dressed and check email. “Bathrooms tend to be sort of a work space for busy tech people and those who travel a lot, so we look at what can be easily and quickly accomplished in this multi-tasking space.

LEFT: Accent Cabinets installed decorative fishtail mullions on the cabinet doors. RIGHT: Cindy Aplanalp-Yates says she needs to “gift clients with ample storage that hides the stuff of life, like counter clutter, which totally messes up the zen of any bathroom.” Photos courtesy of Chairma Design Group

CHIC AND BEAUTIFUL Once she learns what a client wants, imagination takes over. In one remodel, Aplanalp-Yates outfitted the master bath with herringbone hardwood floors, fishtail mullion cabinet facing, a recessed vanity with mirrored doors, and gold hardware. She chose the herringbone pattern because of the way the wood grain intersects from plank to plank, creating movement in an unexpected way. “The tension tingles your mind and engages your senses.” She took the same approach with the mosaic wall tiles in the bathroom. The floral pattern feels random, says the designer. She is also a fan of the multiple tones that add just

as much texture as the rivershell, marble and limestone found in the tile. But there’s a practicality to her choices as well. Unlike wallpaper, the material is easy to clean and stands up to the heat and moisture from a steamy shower or hot bath. If used on the floor, the tiles are also slip-resistant due to the grout in between. The grand dame of a bathroom remodel could be an Italian inspired multi-tiered chandelier with brass arms and finish, similar to the one she selected for this project. The exposed bulbs gave the fixture a slight edge, says Aplanalp, and choosing polished nickel or brass creates a contrast shine to matte tiling. 53

“The tension tingles your mind and engages your senses.” — Cindy Aplanalp-Yates, Chairma Design Group

LIGHTING IS KEY

SOUTHERN CHARM

Aplanalp-Yates uses lighting to extend the design statement in the home. She and her team usually incorporate mounted sconces, always on their own dimmer, in conjunction with recessed LED lighting. And, whenever possible, they install a chandelier. “Even in a man's bath,” says Aplanalp-Yates. “Doing so elevates the space and gives it more personality and a feeling of 'specialness.' There is typically detail and grandeur in a master bath ceiling so this is the perfect way to extend the architectural design.”

In two projects — a 2017 Southern Living showcase home and a spacious Southern home in Bellaire — she made use of clerestory windows and stained glass windows. They added another layer of opulence. Both are as much at home in these modern bathrooms as they are in ancient Rome or a centuries old Gothic cathedral. And the natural light they pour into their respective rooms provides the warmth, comfort, and profundity found in the spiritual spaces that inspire them. mental element that connects us to the energy of creation, says Aplanalp-Yates.

TRADITIONALLY CHIC Each bathroom her company designs has an air of refinement. This is especially true in a tale of two bathrooms, one for the mother, the other for the daughter. For the mother, Aplanalp-Yates chose a leaf mosaic for the bathroom floor, bath and shower wall, and a vintage chandelier. For the daughter, she installed a glittering, chic chandelier. “[The

daughter’s chandelier] is slightly formal, yet friendly which is in line with the client’s personality.” Aplanalp-Yates credits this polish to her love of order. “I’m the kind of gal that makes my bed before I get into it,” she says with a laugh. “I make it all smooth and crisp.” But she also brings the sheen because the bathroom is a hardworking space. Life is chaotic. It can be messy. Her goal is to safely tuck away the clutter of life; for everything to have its place; to simultaneously elevate function and beauty.

La Belle Époque Event Guru Todd Fiscus Brings Instagram Moments to European Style Flower Shop

I

f you’re not in the market for a beautiful bouquet or tasteful arrangement, is there really a reason to set foot in a flower shop? The answer is yes when the flower shop is Avant Garden at ROD, and the owner is event guru Todd Fiscus. FAbout a year ago, when the opportunity to open a sister store to his Dallas boutique presented itself, Fiscus says not only was the time right, he fell in love with the River Oaks District store space. But the Palladian bones and 19-foot ceilings did present a problem. “It was almost too much space,” says Fiscus. To help fill the 2,500 square feet, Fiscus installed two immersive, free-to-the-public photo booths that he says serve as Instagram-ready “visual billboards” for Avant Garden. “I loved the idea of having something that people get to come do that is whimsical and fun,” says Fiscus. The first photo booth, #FlowerRain, is a three-dimensional cur-

tain of multi-colored blooms – stems and leaves included – that angle downward like a floral shower. “#FlowerRain is all about Avant Garden and my love of flowers,” says Fiscus. Broken crystal chandeliers line a path to an eight-foot, walk-in disco ball in the second installation, #BringTheHouseDown. This photo booth is a nod to the parties he’s thrown with his company, Todd Events, and specifically to “the juice” – joy, uniqueness, inspiring, creative, energy – he ensures they bring to every project. Fiscus also opened his doors to a partnership with local bakery Becca Cakes, meaning a Cake Bar with little edible works of art now joins his Orchid Bar. Though you can take a selfie under #FlowerRain, pick up a dozen Becca Cakes macarons, or pile your kids into the disco ball for a playful Christmas card, the heart of Avant Garden still lies in

flowers. Fiscus hopes to keep his boutique from becoming a “special occasion store” only frequented for birthdays, weddings or funerals, and it starts with combating the way people have been taught to view flowers. “We’ve all been trained – or punished, I should say – that flowers are expensive, they’re temporary, they’re wasteful, they don’t last,” says Fiscus. “I look at them as just a tiny bit of what makes our world and our earth interesting.” Though Fiscus notes that grocery stores have dramatically changed the flower business, he says shops like his “add the artfulness of design to the beauty of a flower product.” “The way it’s arranged in the vase, the way it’s cut, the way it tells a story, the way the shape is – all of those things to me are critical,” says Fiscus. But Fiscus hopes every visitor to Avant Garden will get a chance to see for themselves. “It’s a place to experience and smell flowers, and see what beautiful things are around,” says Fiscus. “If you decide you don’t want to buy from us, you don’t have to buy anything, but hopefully when you’re ready to send something to someone you care about, come and let us do something unique.”
