ound Top, Texas, population 91, a sleepy town between Austin and Houston, comes alive during the bi-annual jamboree known as Antique Weekend. Thousands of visitors take to tiny towns along Texas 237 to shop for trinkets and treasures at more than 60 shows set up in barns, fields, dance halls and roadside tents. Eight tips for shopping at antique weekend

HOUSE OF NOSTALGIA March 29-April 6 2110 South Hinze Road at Texas 237, north of the Big Red Barn in Burton

Looking for tips to shape a successful shopping adventure at Antiques Weekend? Paige Hull (The Vintage Round Top) and Linda O’Neal (White Church House on the Hill) are longtime shoppers at the antiques extravaganza, and they know the ropes.

LA BAHIA ANTIQUE SHOW March 29-April 5 La Bahia Turn Verein Hall Texas 237, just south of U.S. 290 979.289.2684 www.labahiaantiques.com

Here are eight tips to get you on the right track. 1. If you can, go twice: shop early for the best selection and then again on the last day to get the best deals. If you can only go once, determine if you want best selection or best price.

OLD GLORY ANTIQUES March 27-April 3 701 N. Main Street in Burton 303-798-4212 www.oldgloryantiquesinc.com

2. Bring cash. Always ask the dealers for their best price. 3. It’s good to start early. You may see an item change hands two to three times before the end of the show so be the first to buy it.

SHELBY ANTIQUES SHOW March 31-April 5 Harmonie Hall 509 W Fm 389 678.640.2529 PHOTO BY BRECKENHEIMER, WIKIMEDIACOMMONS.ORG

4. Wear comfortable shoes, bring a hat and wear sunscreen.

BURTON, TX

5. Go to Warrenton and shop the fields before Marburger begins. Enjoy the hunt in the fields for great finds. 6. Bring a large bag to carry “smalls” that you purchase. 7. When you see something you want, go for it. You may not pass that way again, and if you do, the piece you spotted may well be gone. 8. VERY IMPORTANT: Bring a notebook to keep a list of vendors that you bought large items from so that you can get back at the end of the day for the pick up. The fields are large and can be confusing, so jot down the dealers name and cell phone number. Be sure to take down the “field” or “show” and booth number.

Vintage Style with Modern Convenience WHERE CITY FOLK CAN GET COUNTRY INSPIRATION inety miles west of Houston where the salt grass prairie joins a swath of fertile farmland, half a dozen tiny Texas towns offer a respite from everyday urban living. Here, picturesque cottages, farmhouses and small inns, some dating from the early days of Texas, are now restored as vacation rentals in stylish, even luxurious fashion, without forgetting their roots. Creating a sleek, chic interior with rustic charm and modern comfort is second nature to Paige and Smoot Hull who own The Vintage Round Top, a house located just minutes from Round Top’s town square. Her design philosophy: “Buy pieces that you love, ones that speak to you, and don’t be afraid to mix the old with the new.”

Their home’s interior is a combination of clean lines and reclaimed materials handpicked by Paige Hull, an inveterate collector of industrial objects and vintage furniture. “Our style is a mixture of modern with vintage touches; it’s a fusion of new and old,” she says. In the living area the couple has refaced the ceiling with blue-gray and brown planks from the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. Reclaimed wood also forms a backdrop for the bed in an upstairs sleeping loft. Using old items – many with stories – the Hulls find creative pleasure in making their own accessories. The dining room light fixture was once a metal drum with a wooden arm. The tabletop – found in a field – traveled with a carnival and once rested on saw horse legs.

The elegant master headboard is fashioned from a found architectural piece with added antique tin panels, and the handsome daybed is constructed from an antique door and shipping pallets. Sconces are made from cow feed sifters with added burlap fringe. Displayed on the wall fronting the stairs is an art installation of multiple antique suitcases. For them, it represents people traveling in and out of the house. The coffee table trunk covered in stickers from actual travel was a $25 estate sale find. Hull recommends spending a little more for a focal piece whether it’s an old country store counter to serve as a kitchen island or a hutch that is crusty and aged but perfectly houses pristine white ironstone pitchers and plates. “One-of-a-kind décor allows your personality to shine through,” says Hull. Best known of the designers contributing to Round Top’s homespun aesthetic is Rachel Ashwell, owner of the Prairie, a cluster of five buildings operating as a bed & breakfast and events venue on 46 acres of private land.

The London-born designer dressed the properties in her hallmark/trademark “Shabby Chic” style, which has gained widespread acclaim as a line for Target. For Ashwell, “the beauty of imperfection is at the core value of shabby chic.” Her newest book features some of the design work at her Texas B&B. It’s called Rachel Ashwell Couture Prairie And Flea Market Treasures. Two more purveyors of down-home design are Joan and Jerry Herring of Blackbird Farm. The couple owns three historic houses and the Red & White Inn on the square in Fayetteville. The Herrings are adept at converting the well worn into antique chic, and combining vintage items with special high-end touches like Bella Note linens. “People come to the country for an authentic experience, but they want modern plumbing and all the amenities,” says Joan Herring. Blackbird Farm is a 47-acre retreat between Ellinger and Fayetteville with two cabins and a hall for weddings and family gatherings. Three miles from Fayetteville, the couple has a refurbished log cabin dating from 1850 and the Sealy House. They are currently restoring a historic home on Market Street in Fayetteville proper. “People just seem to slow down and sleep late when they come to the country. It's so quiet and relaxing, they don't want to leave,” she says. Among the creative decor is a headboard made from an old picket fence and for humor, a vintage mannequin hand holds back the shower curtain. A collection of antique mirrors serves as an art piece in the Red & White Inn and a compilation of vintage art brushes hang in the Sealy House.

Sliding barn doors give rustic appeal to guest rooms and when the couple takes down any walls on a property, they harvest the wood for bedside tables and headboards. “For us, comfort is key. We like to surround ourselves with beauty and feel that others enjoy that too. We’ve designed places and spaces with our personal art collections and amenities reflecting the way we like to live,” adds Herring. She is often asked about paint colors, bedding and even if the longhorns on display are for sale. The two most requested colors are Tradewind (SW6218) and Alpaca, a soft gray (SW7022). Debuting this March, is a new guesthouse with spiritual proportions about nine miles north of Round Top It’s “The Little White Church House on the Hill, designed by Linda O’Neal and Rob Rossenbaum. “It’s more than just a place to stay, it’s an experience,” says O’Neal. The house has a 20-foot cathedral ceiling with an antique chandelier, stained glass windows and, outside, a steeple. Rooms are painted white with soft pinks and blues to create a soothing atmosphere. Here, what’s outside is equally important to what’s inside. Eleven-foot double doors from Egypt open onto a vista of rolling hills, a pond, and the wide blue Texas sky, she adds. The couple is planting 300 olive trees on the front of the property.
