CLASSES Houston-area gardeners can expect wide variety of gardening classes and unique events throughout each month at The Arbor Gate in Tomball. Linda Gay, a local horticulture expert and longtime director at Mercer Arboretum and Botanic Gardens teaches Where do we Garden from Here on March 10. The class takes into account the extreme weather patterns of 2011 and highlights smart choices and gardening strategies for our area. Stephen F. Austin State University’s Dr. David Creech leads a similar class with a more in-depth focus on the Texas-tough, bullet proof plants that deserve to be widely planted. Dr. Creech’s class, Climate Change Friendly Plants for Southern Landscapes on March 27, covers the many surprising survivors at SFA Gardens and landscapes of SE Texas. HOME SHOWS The 24th Annual Galveston Home and Garden Show takes place at the Galveston Island Convention Center at San Luis March 10 11, 2012. This major fundraiser for the Galveston Island Humane Society features the latest in gardening, home decor and repairs and access to local contractors, green builders and landscapers. ART & DESIGN EVENTS The Houston Antiques Dealers Association hosts its Spring Antiques Show & Sale March 2-4 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Renowned for hosting one of the oldest antique shows in the country, HADA will showcase over 90 antique dealers

the Rice Village hosts a special Fair Trade Oriental Rug Event March 7-11. In collaboration with Bunyaad, a fair trade rug company, the event features more than 300 hand-knotted rugs, from intricate florals to hand-spun wool natural dye tribals. Bunyaad works with over 850 families throughout 100 villages in Pakistan. A special one-hour Introduction to Oriental Rugs seminar takes place on Thursday, March 8 at 6 p.m., covering topics from how rugs are made to tips on care and room design. From March 4 through June 3, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, MFAH displays exhibition Shifting Paradigms in Contemporary Ceramics: The Garth Clark and Mark Del Vecchio Collection, celebrating the museum’s acquisition of the Clark/Del Vecchio collection and presenting it on a large scale for the first time. The MFAH acquired this landmark collection in 2007, giving the museum one of the most important collections of post-World War II ceramics in the world. Among the nearly 200 works are stunning pieces, such as room-size installations and a ceramic carpet, that defy traditional expectations of the medium. The collection centers on two ceramic traditions: the vessel and the sculpture. These forms are showcased in myriad permutations over time and across the globe. The collection encompasses an international roster of established and emerging artists (from 23 countries) with a specialty in the ceramic arts, as well as painters and sculptors who also worked in clay.
