COMMENTARY Mobilizing the Poor People’s Campaign By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer

than one-third -- 66 million -- of white Americans. These realities -- and the extreme inequality that scars this society -- pre-date the Trump administration, but now Trump is fanning increasing policy violence against the poor. In response, the Poor People’s Campaign is doing deep organizing and power building among the poor, turning them from victims to subject actors in history.

T

his week in Washington, the powers that be are hearing from a vital new democratic force in this country. For three days, the Poor People’s Campaign will bring poor and low-wage Americans to the nation’s capital to call for a moral renewal in this nation. They will question many of those who are seeking the Democratic nomination for president. Congressional hearings will showcase their Poor People’s Moral Budget. Their actions should be above the fold of every newspaper in America; they should lead the news shows and fill the talk shows. A movement for common sense and social justice is building, putting every politician on notice: lead or get out of the way, a new moral majority is building and demanding change. As the co-chairs of the Poor People’s Campaign, the Rev. Dr. William Barber II and Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis write in their forward, this movement is not partisan. It calls not for liberal or conservative reforms, but for a

moral renewal. It is not a deep-pocket lobby. It is mobilizing the 144 million Americans who are poor or one crisis away from poverty into a “new and unsettling force” to “revive the heart of democracy in America.” This movement launched on Mother’s Day in May 2018. In 40 days, it triggered 200 actions across many states with 5,000 nonviolent demonstrators committing civil disobedience, and millions following the protests online. Forty states now have coordinating committees build a coalition of poor people and people of faith and conscience across lines of race, religion, region and other lines of division. They are morally outraged that the richest nation in the world would in a “willful act of policy violence” condemn 140 million -- more than 40 percent of the population -- to live in poverty or near poverty. This includes 39 million children, 60 percent -- 26 million -- of African Americans, 64 percent -- 38 million -- of Latinos, more

This week, the campaign releases their Poor People’s Moral Budget. It details authoritatively that the cost of our current inequality, the cost of mass poverty is far greater than what it would cost to invest in people, put them to work at a living wage and guarantee basic economic and political rights. It costs society big time to not provide health care or quality education or clean water and air, to suppress voting rights and to keep wages low. The moral budget is detailed and authoritatively sourced. The numbers are clear, as is the conclusion. As the document concludes, “We have been investing in killing people; we most now invest in life. We have been investing in systemic racism and voter suppression; we must now invest in expanding democracy. We have been investing in punishing the poor; we must now invest in the welfare of all. We have been investing in the wealthy and corporations; we must now invest in the people who build this country.” This is not a time for incremental change, but for fundamental transfor-

mation of our priorities and our direction. The budget details large reforms -- from automatic voter registration, a living wage, health care for all, quality education from pre-k through college, investment in clean energy and modern infrastructure. It details how these and other reforms can be easily afforded by fair taxes on the wealthy and corporations and by ending our effort to police the world. The Poor People’s Campaign picks up the unfinished work of Dr. Martin Luther King. It realizes that ending the policy of violence on the poor at home cannot be achieved without challenging the costly endless wars and constant arms buildup that only make us less secure. It understands that change will come not from the top down, not from our corrupted big money politics, but from the poor, the worker, people of conscience coming together to revive our democracy and to change our course. In these troubled times, the promise of this new force is powerful. Across the country, working and poor people are beginning to move. If this movement can continue to grow, it will transform our politics. And it is the only force that can. (You can write to the Rev. Ocasio-Cortez Compares Migrant Detention Facilities to Concentration Camps By Caroline Kelly, CNN

“The United States is running concentration camps on our southern border, and that is exactly what they are -- they are concentration camps,” Ocasio-Cortez told an Instagram Live audience Monday evening. “And if that doesn’t bother you ... I want to talk to the people that are concerned enough with humanity to say that we should not, that ‘never again’ means something,” a reference to a phrase commonly invoked by Jews about the Holocaust. “The fact that concentration camps are now an institutionalized practice in the home of the free is extraordinarily disturbing, and we need to do something about it,” she added. Ocasio-Cortez also referenced how some migrant children were being held in facilities formerly used to detain Japanese Americans during World War II. Last week, the Department of Health and Human Services, which is tasked with caring for unaccompanied migrant children, said it would use facilities at Fort Sill Army Base in Oklahoma to house minors. The base, which once held an internment camp for Japanese Americans, was used during the Obama administration for migrant children as well. Ocasio-Cortez called the situation “a crisis” not just for those detained but also about whether “America will remain Amer-

ica in its actual principles and values or if we are losing to an authoritarian and fascist presidency.” “I don’t use those words lightly. I don’t use those words to just throw bombs. I use that word because that is what an administration that creates concentration camps is,” she said. “A presidency that creates concentration camps is fascist, and it’s very difficult to say that, because it is very difficult to accept the fact that that is how bad things have gotten, but that is how bad things have gotten.” The Department of Homeland Security has been overwhelmed by the sheer volume of migrants illegally crossing the southern border. The DHS found”dangerous overcrowding” and unsanitary conditionsat an El Paso, Texas, Border Patrol processing facility following an unannounced inspection in May. DHS said it “has implemented a multi-layered approach” that includes the construction of additional structures to house migrants, continued coordination with Immigration and Customs Enforcement and providing staff support. Acting DHS Secretary Kevin McAleenan has urged Congress to provide additional funding to address the worsening situation at the border. The Senate Appropriations Committee is planning to mark up a border supplemental bill Wednesday in committee.

Ocasio-Cortez stood by her comments Tuesday, accusing Republican detractors of failing to understand the role of concentration camps. “For the shrieking Republicans who don’t know the difference: concentration camps are not the same as death camps,” she tweeted Tuesday. “Concentration camps are considered by experts as ‘the mass detention of civilians without trial.’ And that’s exactly what this administration is doing.” Rep. Liz Cheney, the No. 3 Republican in the House, accused Ocasio-Cortez of disrespecting the legacy of Jews killed during the Holocaust with her comments. “Please @AOC do us all a favor and spend just a few minutes learning some actual history. 6 million Jews were exterminated in the Holocaust. You demean their memory and disgrace yourself with comments like this,” the Wyoming Republican tweeted. Ocasio-Cortez shot back, “Hey Rep. Cheney, since you’re so eager to ‘educate me,’ I’m curious: What do YOU call building mass camps of people being detained without a trial? How would you dress up DHS’s mass separation of thousands children at the border from their parents?” Cheney replied that she is “happy to help educate” Ocasio-Cortez, and tweeted

Tiffany Haddish Postpones Atlanta Show Over Georgia’s Abortion Law

Actress and comedian Tiffany Haddish postponed her June 22 show at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta because of Georgia’s controversial abortion law. The law, which Gov. Brian Kemp signed last month, bans abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected -- as early as six weeks into pregnancy when many women don’t yet know they’re pregnant. “After much deliberation, I am postponing my upcoming show in Atlanta. I love the state of Georgia, but I need to stand with women and until they withdraw Measure HB481, I cannot in good faith perform there,” Haddish said in a statement released Saturday. Jennifer Walker of Brave Public Relations, which represents Fox Theatre, says the theater is offering refunds to ticket holders.

André 3000 Is Just Walking Around the Airport Playing the Flute

Coachella 2020 Tickets Are Already On Sale for a $25 Down Payment

André 3000 does whatever he wants. The ever-enigmatic Atlanta rapper and half of the hip-hop duo OutKast was spotted Friday at Los Angeles International Airport keeping his musical skills sharp. At first, traveler Antonia Cereijido thought she was losing her mind when she saw a man who looked like the rapper walking around her terminal playing a flute, the producer for NPR’s Latino USA told CNN. It turns out that man was, indeed, André 3000. Cereijido asked the rapper about his instrument, which he said was an indigenous double flute, she said. Cereijido snapped a quick photo with him, uploaded a tweet about their encounter, then boarded the same flight André 3000 was taking.

It’s barely been two months since Coachella 2019 happened, but advance tickets for next year’s festival are already on sale on its website. It’ll likely be a long time before the 2020 lineup is announced, but if you’re super eager to go to Indio, California, and don flower crowns and desert boots, here’s your chance. General admission tickets for the three day weekend start at $429. If that’s too big of a chunk of change to drop all at once, the festival has a new payment plan. Yes, payment plans for music festivals are a thing. The plan starts with a down payment of $25, although the six payments after that are each $67.33. The tickets went on sale on Friday at 2 p.m. ET.

FEATURE Quanell X: Help or Hinderance? By: Nicole Lynne Gray

F

rom the writer: To be clear, I am elated that information obtained by Quanell X helped authorities recover the remains of 4-year old Maleah Davis so that her family may finally lay her to rest. Her family has planned a private funeral this Saturday, June 22, 2019, nearly a month and a half after she was first reported missing. As her family says their final goodbyes, many of us still hold out hope that those responsible for little Maleah’s death are brought to justice. Maleah became “Houston’s baby” and captured hearts all over the world when police issued an amber alert in the early morning of May 5, 2019 based on information provided by Maleah’s then caretaker, Derion Vence. Vence was Maleah’s mother’s live-in boyfriend and is the father of her younger brother. At the time, Vence claimed that he, Maleah and his 2-year-old son had been abducted by three Hispanic males in a blue pick-up truck Friday evening, May 3, 2019 after pulling over en route to pick up the children’s mother from the airport. He claimed the two men assaulted him, stole his vehicle and kidnapped Maleah, leaving he and his son at an unknown location on Highway 6 near Sugarland, Texas the following evening. The search for missing Maleah and the vehicle ensued after Vence presented to Methodist Sugarland hospital late Saturday night with injuries from the alleged incident and the public outcry for Maleah’s return began.

gested to investigators that an attempt had been made to clean up the blood. The Houston Forensic Science Center later confirmed the blood sample was composed mostly of blood from the then missing 4-year-old. On May 9, 2019, the vehicle in question was located in Missouri City, Texas. But, there was still no sign of Maleah and no charges yet brought in the case. On May 10, 2019, the vehicle was examined and a blue basket similar to the one carried by Vence in the surveillance footage was recovered from the trunk after two

Quanell X (born Quanell Ralph Evans) was associated with the case when he held a press conference speaking on behalf of Maleah’s mother. Quanell X employs a somewhat local “celebrity status” here in Houston, having a public persona which has landed him a role on the Fox 26 segment ‘Faceoff’ where he appears opposite normally more conservative pundits who challenge him on his views regarding various issues. In the news conference, Quanell gave details that were not then publicly known of the police investigation and also provided information which he said was shared with him by Maleah’s mother. He claimed Maleah’s disappearance may have had something to do with a confrontation the mother had with Vence over a homosexual affair she accused him of having. He also hinted to previous incidents of abuse of Maleah by Vence. The very next day, Vence was arrested and charged with felony tampering with evidence, namely a corpse, and held on a $1 million bond. Although investigators did not believe that Maleah was still alive, Vence was not charged with a homicide. At that point, I was as anxious as anyone for someone to be brought to justice for what looked more like a homicide by the day. As an attorney, albeit not criminal defense, and despite my anxiety, I recognized the difficulty prosecutors would face in proving a homicide without Maleah’s body, Vence’s

As the case progressed, Houston Police investigators quickly uncovered inconsistencies in Vence’s account after reviewing surveillance video from an apartment nearby the one he shared with Maleah, her mother and two other children. The video showed Vence leaving their apartment twice the early afternoon of the alleged abduction; once carrying a blue laundry basket with a large black trash bag inside, the second time carrying cleaning supplies including bleach. The video did not show him leaving the apartment again until the time he claims he left with the children to get their mother. Contrary to Vence’s story, however, the surveillance footage showed Maleah was not with him and the 2-year-old when they left that Friday evening. Further, footage from surveillance cameras at the hospital showed Vence was dropped off at the hospital in the car that he claimed he had not seen since the alleged abduction. Just days into the investigation, Maleah’s mother, who authorities confirmed was out of town at time of Maleah’s disappearance, consented to a search of their apartment. Investigators recovered blood evidence in the apartment’s hallway and bathroom that would have been invisible to the unaided eye. This sug-

10

in most states including Texas, homicide cases not only require proof of the act (an unlawful killing) but also proof of some culpable mental state (i.e. intent, negligence, or recklessness) and a causal connection between the act and the effect (i.e. something the accused did or didn’t do that actually caused the death). In this case, at the time of Vence’s arrest, without Maleah’s body to tell the story of her demise and with him not talking, prosecutors certainly could not make a case for murder which requires intent to cause serious bodily injury or death. And even a manslaughter case at that point seemed tenuous even though they would not have to meet the burden of proving intent. By May 23, 2019, Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo updated the public on the case’s status, stating in his address, “We really believe we have a little girl that’s been murdered. We believe that she’s out there somewhere, and we want to bring her home.” He also said that Maleah’s family had been uncooperative. By that time, the case had garnered national attention and $20,000 in reward money, but still had no leads as to Maleah’s whereabouts. Nothing more was heard of the case until May 28, 2019, when Quanell X resurfaced with breaking news that he would no longer be “representing” Maleah’s mother. The events that led to the termination of the relationship are disputed but each accuses the other of lying about details of the case. On May 30, 2019 Vence’s counsel withdrew his representation for nonpayment and the court appointed him a new attorney. Also, Crime Stoppers of Houston increased their contribution to the reward money bringing the total to $27,500. The very next day, Quanell X held another press conference. This time, he alleged to have gotten a confession from Vence including the whereabouts of Maleah. Based on the evidence presented by Quanell, local authorities worked with Arkansas authorities and Texas Equushare to locate and return Maleah’s remains which were discovered by a litter and mowing crew in a black garbage bag on the side of the interstate. But, with a month into the investigation, Maleah’s body finally home, there were still no homicide charges. That’s when my anxiety grew. Because although I recognized the deficiencies in the case, I also recognized the realities that even the weakest circumstantial cases have been brought and proven especially when public sentiment is such that it is.

confession to prove the homicide case against Vence. So I really began to wonder, what was the hold up? That’s when I began to question whether Quanell X’s involvement in the case was a help or hinderance to its prosecution. I began doing a little digging into Quanell X’s background to see if maybe the issue is his credibility as the prosecution’s star witness and all. The answer I uncovered left me dumbfounded. Not only is Quanell X likely a hinderance to the prosecution of a homicide in the case of Maleah Davis, but a hinderance to the community, in general. By all estimations, in my opinion, Quanell is a wolf in sheep’s clothing, holding himself out as a person of authority who can be trusted to help those suffering from injustices. From his public stances in high profiled cases, like the current one, to his regular appearance on Fox, Quanell has skillfully crafted an image that allows him to prey on those in underserved communities. So as far as this case goes he has major credibility issues and that will have to be worked around by the prosecution who must meet a high burden of proof. The community faces a bigger problem because it seems we have a predator in the midst of those already starved for justice. My research began at Quanell X’s official website www.qx4justice.com which calls him an “Activist for All who’ve Suffered from Injustice.” Noble, right? On the site he claims to be a “Human & Civil Rights Leader” and highlights homicides he has “solved,” including the cases of Tynesha Stewart in 2007 when he obtained a confession for the murder of the Texas A&M student; Randy Slyvester in 2008 where he got the father to confess to the murder of his children; and La’Melvin Johnson in 2013 when he peacefully surrendered the shooter in a carwash triple homicide. The site also highlights his tenure as a spokesman for the Nations of Islam and for a local platinum recording group. Oddly it touts his celebrity as achievements citing “[m]any hip hop artists have sampled his speeches and television interviews on their rap albums along with their rap videos.” His bio concludes that he “is the only Houston activist that has gone viral 12 times with over 275 million views on YouTube and is now the leader of the New Black Panther Nation headquartered in Houston, Texas.” The sites oddities didn’t raise an eyebrow initially beyond it making pretty clear that he relishes his fame, so I followed his lead, first going to YouTube to watch some of those viral videos and then to the New Black Panther Nation to get more information on his ‘activ-

ism.’ On YouTube, I saw much of what I expected to see, a lot of those ‘fiery opinions’ he has become known for on Fox. But, something I didn’t expect was a video entitled “Victims of Quanell X.” So, I watched it. I sat all 19 minutes and 55 seconds in complete aww of what I was hearing from three ladies who claimed Quanell X took thousands of dollars from each of them and delivered nothing but empty promises. her relative’s case; another he also took $3,500 from, this time holding out as a lawyer who could represent her brother in a federal case; and the last he took $17,500 claiming again to be a lawyer who could help her family resolve an out-of-state child custody case. The video also delivered my next planned research stop as it ended with a message from the national chairman of the People’s New Black Panther Party who disassociated the group from Quanell and delivered a final plea for him to right the wrongs he has done in the community. I reached out to the party’s national chairman, Yahcanon Ben Yah, who graciously spoke with me for nearly an hour revealing that what I saw in the video was only the tip of the iceberg. In February 2018, The People’s New Black Panther Party in Houston officially disassociated Quanell X from the organization after receiving dozens of calls for help from people alleging that Quanell had taken thousands of dollars from them promising some form of ‘representation’ but never delivering. Mr. Ben Yah detailed a pattern of fraud perpetrated on the most vulnerable in our community which spanned well over a decade where Quanell took anywhere from $1,500 to $38,000 from individuals, representing that he was a lawyer at times, then stopped taking their calls after receiving the money. He said the organization has tried resolving the issue with Quanell directly pleading for him to pay the people back their money, but so far their pleas have been met with obstinance. The group is currently helping victims pursue criminal charges through the Harris County District Attorney’s Fraud Division in efforts to stop Quanell from further preying on members of the community with his decade old scheme. In my attempt to reach the ladies in the “Victims of Quanell X” video, I was able to connect with Attorney Drew Willey who represents one of the ladies in the video, Latorsha Smith, who has filed a lawsuit in Harris County, along with her brother, to recover $3,500 they claim to have paid Quanell for legal services. Attorney Willey is a criminal defense and civil rights attorney who is

also the CEO and founder of Restoring Justice a non-profit organization whose mission is to offer “loving and holistic criminal defense legal service for the oppressed, the forgotten and the poor.” He also represents another victim of Quanell’s, whose story was not shared in the video, who claims to have paid Quanell $2500 to get her son’s criminal record expunged, according to court filings. Although Attorney Willey was not at liberty to discuss the pending matters, he answered the question I asked of ‘who is Quanell X’ with an answer that I think rings most true after knowing all I know now, “he is exactly who he claims to stand against.” In consideration of these revelations, I can only conclude that Quanell X will likely hinder the prosecution of the case for homicide against Derion

Vence. Because of Quanell’s reputation for fraud, or simply lying, there is room for Vence’s defense attorney to create reasonable doubt as to the truth of his account of the ‘confession.’ The prosecutors have their work cut out for them with Quanell X as a star witness. I am interested in whether Quanell will face criminal charges, I will be following up in the coming weeks with the Mr. Ben Yah and the DA’s office to see, because in the majority of the cases Mr. Ben Yah shared with me, the people who Quanell victimized were already underrepresented, so his actions not only caused monetary damages, but immeasurable ones that will have long lasting, life altering, effects for his victims. I pray for justice for Maleah and also for the victims of Quanell X.

TRAVEL

St. Pete/Clearwater, Hello Adventure! By: Lisa Valadez

G

et ready, set, pack! It’s summertime in Houston and most of us (if not all of us) are researching the perfect beach destination to escape this Houston heat. (Please take me with you!)

you’re trying to reenact all the stunts you’ve seen in all the movies. (I was a bit nervous at first, but about 5 minutes in I just knew that I was the #1 speed boat driver in the entire world.)

If you’ve been following Houston Style’s latest Florida travel escapade, the adventurous journey has taken us swimming with the manatees in Crystal River, where we got up close and personal with the adorable “sea cows”. We canoed the Chassahowitzka River and Seven Sisters Springs and got super bold by freestyle cave diving! But the fun in the sun adventure doesn’t end there; our next stop is the beautiful St. Pete/ Clearwater.

More thrills? Take a short drive on to Albert Whitted Airport and book a one-of-a kind bi-plane tour. This thrilling ride in the sky will give you a birds

Flying directly into Tampa offers the perfect for any adventure-seeking enthusiast. While Crystal River and Tampa Bay are definitely great vacation destinations for the family, my recommendation for a much-needed adult getaway with great restaurants, pristine beaches, and tons of adventure would be St. Pete/Clearwater. Described as “retro surfer- chic”, the Post Card Inn is the perfect lodging spot if you’re wanting day time pool side fun, lively evenings filled with music, beach bar cocktails, and perhaps even wedding watching on the courtyard. (Yes, there was an actual wedding right outside my hotel room door front. Yes, I crashed it. Yes, I danced all night!) And if some serious daytime rest and relaxation after a night of dancing (don’t judge me!) is needed, the beach is just footsteps away. Trust me, make sure you experience at least one sunset on the beach.

choice, it’s time for some sight seeing fun! The Pedego Bike Mural Tour is a perfect way to map out the places you want to dine, shop, and visit while exploring the many murals in the downtown area. With the electric bikes offered at Pedego, (less pedaling, more wind in your face!) you can easily cover lots

eye view from a 1929 Travel Air open cockpit airplane originally owned by William Randolph Hearst (how cool is that?). This was my absolute favorite thing to do in St. Pete and yes, I got to cross another “must-do” off of my bucket list. So now that I am an expert and have crowned myself today’s unofficial Amelia Earhart, I am definitely recommending that this be your adventurous vacation getaway splurge. (Check out the picture of me and my “excellent adventure” pal,Ted.) After all this exciting adventure, did someone say hungry? If bicycling is your choice of adventure for the day, plan to have lunch at Bodega on Central. Although the line might be slightly long, do not let it discourage you; these street- style Cuban sandwiches are definitely worth the wait! The Lechon (Cuban style roast pork, garlic mojo, and grilled onions) is my recommendation. And make sure to wash down all that deliciousness with a soda fresca (fresh-squeezed fruit, herbs, spices, Florida can sugar and Pinellas seltzer). And no worries – there’s also a delicious sandwich for vegetarians! A super chic and fun lunch spot, if you’re in the mood for good wine or even great local beer to pair with light bites is Lolita’s Wine Market. The charcuterie-centric menu offers an array of tasty nibbles that about 22 accouterment options along with other small plates and signature dessert “jars” such as the triple chocolate decadence with dulce de leche. worth it). However, if you do decide to order off the menu, start with the Charred Octopus and follow with the Short Rib Mezzzluna. And for the love of everything, please end your meal with the Olive Oil Lemon Cake. (I saved the picture of me eating this deliciousness and dream about this dessert often. Please someone go to this restaurant and bring me back an entire sheet pan of this cake!)

Alesia’s cozy outdoor dining area is the perfect setting for a romantic evening or even a girl’s night out offering a beautifully lit backdrop for amazing photo ops. But let’s not let the charming courtyard take away from the fact that Alesia’s “French meets Vietnamese” cuisine is superbly delicious. My dining partners ranged from carnivores to vegans and the menu did not disappoint; offering an array of options for every appetite. My recommendation: French Onion Soup, Summer Rolls, and Phở.

So now that I have done the hard work of adventuring and eating for you (such a hard job!), what are you waiting for? St. Pete/Clearwater offers the perfect and budget-friendly alternative to Orlando and even Miami. At this vacation destination, you get the beautiful beaches, daytime adventure and sight-seeing, top dining, and a whole lot of fun.

IL Ritorno is not just dining; it is an experience that will tantalize all of your taste buds with every bite! By far, this has been one of my favorite foodie experiences and I honestly cannot wait to return (as the establishment’s name suggests). In all honesty, the entire menu was completely satisfactory so you might want to splurge a little and opt for the Chef’s 5-Course Tasting (well

A lot of people think the pressure is on me, but the pressure is just there period. I’m ready to fight in Houston, I’m ready to show the world a new Jermall Charlo and I’m doing it right here at home. I got a game opponent in Brandon Adams. He’s going to come out to fight. Everything is on me, so I have to provide and put Houston on my back. I’ve been training well so I’m ready to go out and do what I do. This guy is coming to my hometown to fight me, so he’s going to prepare himself well and be at the top of his game. This makes me have to train a lot harder to do what I have to do.” RONNIE SHIELDS, Charlo’s Trainer “Mentally I go over the game plan every day and every night. I still watch a lot of film and a lot of different fights. I’m focusing on all of the technical stuff that I know we have to do in the ring. Although we’re close to the fight, just a week left,

Here’s Why Kidney Disease Affects Black People Differently By BlackDoctor.Org

A

ccording to the National Kidney Foundation, Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure in African Americans. African Americans are twice as likely to be diagnosed with diabetes as Caucasians. Approximately 4.9 million African Americans over 20 years of age are living with either diagnosed or undiagnosed diabetes.

health events: acute kidney injury, kidney failure, hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hospitalization, and death; however, in analyses that also adjusted for comorbid conditions and socioeconomic status, blacks had a higher risk for hypertension, diabetes, and kidney failure only. When considering only blacks, the APOL1 high-risk variants were linked with a higher risk of kidney failure, but there was high variability in kidney function decline among those with and without the variants.

Recently, researchers have found ties between certain genetic variants and kidney disease in African Americans. The findings, which appear in an upcoming issue of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN), suggest that widespread screening for these variants in the black general population is not yet justified. Per ScienceDaily.org, African Americans have an elevated risk for chronic kidney disease and kidney failure compared with European Americans. Studies have shown that much of this risk is due to genetic variations in a gene called apolipoprotein L1 (APOL1), which creates a protein that is a component of HDL, or good cholesterol. These variants arose tens of thousands of years ago in sub-Saharan Africa, and so are present in individuals who have recent sub-Saharan African ancestry. Approximately 5 million African Americans carry APOL1 risk variants; how-

ever, not all persons with such variants develop kidney disease. Per the study: To get a better sense of how APOL1 genetic risk variants affect kidney disease and other aspects of health over the long term, Morgan Grams, MD Ph.D. (Johns Hopkins University) and her colleagues evaluated the prognosis and APOL1 status of participants in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study.

Among 15,140 ARIC participants followed from 1987-1989 to 20112013, 75.3% were white, 21.5% were black/APOL1 low-risk, and 3.2% were black/APOL1 high-risk. “Our study is a population-based cohort following participants over 25 years and thus well suited at assessing a fairly comprehensive set of outcomes among people with the high-risk genotype,” said Dr. Grams. In analyses that adjusted for differences in demographics, blacks had a higher risk for all assessed adverse

www.stylemagazine.com

“We found great variability in kidney function trajectory, such that most African Americans with the high-risk genotype experienced a similar decline as African Americans with the low-risk genotype,” said Dr. Grams. “We did find pervasive racial disparities in adverse health outcomes not explained by the APOL1 risk variants, which suggests that interventions to improve health and health outcomes in African Americans are needed.” Jasmine Browley holds an MA in journalism from Columbia College Chicago, and has contributed to Ebony, Jet and MADE Magazine among others. BOOK

“In West Mills” by De’Shawn Charles Winslow © .2019, Bloomsbury $26.00 / $35.00 Canada 263 pages By Terri Schlichenmeyer, Book Reviewer

T

he burden on your shoulders is heavy.

And sometimes, they’re let go in anger and revenge…

Your whole body sags with the weight of things you know but can’t tell, and each new whisper adds to the pack. Secrets you carry are more than you can bear sometimes, which is why you need to share them – but in the new book “In West Mills” by De’Shawn Charles Winslow, there’s virtue in hushing up.

“In West Mills” is one of those novels that makes you want to pause. It’s slow, that’s it. It takes place over decades, as its two main characters grow, for better or worse, and age together and apart. At first, you might even think that it’ll never get to the point – although it seems that is the point.

Azalea “Knot” Centre was in the process of throwing her man, Pratt, out of the house for the last time. Or maybe she wasn’t because, although she hated having him underfoot, scolding her for evenings spent at Miss Goldie’s bar, she also loved Pratt. It was true that Knot drank a lot; even Otis Lee Loving, Knot’s best friend down the road, told her so. Otis Lee and his wife, Pep, worried about Knot. When Knot woke up one day and realized that she was pregnant, they worried even more. Seems that was what Otis Lee did best: worry. After he found a nearby family to take Knot’s daughter and raise her up, Otis Lee and Pep warned Knot not to sleep around anymore but pretty soon, Knot’s belly grew big again. She mourned for

girls about who’d given them birth, just like there was no reason to tell Otis Lee the secret about his family that Knot had heard from another friend. There was just no sense in hurting Otis Lee with that information.

And time passed in West Mills. Knot’s girls were raised almost right beneath her nose and Otis Lee and Pep kept her secret. There was no use telling those

But in a little North Carolina town like West Mills, secrets have a way of escaping. Sometimes, they’re slippery little things.

www.stylemagazine.com

Yes, this novel works its way through slowly, but you’d be hard-pressed to find a tale that depicts friendship any better. Author De’Shawn Charles Winslow puts truth in this novel, in the form of frustration and exasperation real friends have between them, even though they love one another fiercely. He does that without ruining the story with too much silly drama, and there’s your slow-down factor. In the end, though, that offers a languid, hazy feeling, somewhat like walking barefoot down a dusty Carolina road on a summer’s day. It makes you want to linger. In the end, that makes “In West Mills” a book that’s no burden to enjoy. Share this review online at stylemagazine.com.
