THE CHURCH OF LIGHT iis the most famous one of Tadao Ando’s Church Trilogy (Wind Church, The Church of Water, and the Church of Light). It located at Ibaraki, Osaka Prefecture of Japan, built in 1989. It is about

has a large impact. The design of church is extremely simple and abstract, but very religious habitat, which makes people feel isolated. It got the best church in 20 centory reward.

TADAO ANDO was born on September 13, 1941 in Osaka, Japan. he is a world-famous Japanese architect. His work is well-known for using natural light and structures that follow natural forms of landscape,rather than disturbing the landscape by making it conform to the constructed space of a building. Ando’s architectural style is said to create a “haiku” (Japanese poetry) effect, emphasizing nothingness and empty space to represent the beauty of simplicity. The three principles of his works: 1.show the real surface and texture of materiel. his favorite materiel is concrete and wood. 2.exposure the structure and foundation.

By using limited resource Tadao wanted to create a habitat for human’s spirits, which makes people feel isolated from outside world. So the darkness is used for giving a feeling of fear.

Due to the high temperature in OSAKA, Ando chooses concrete as main material to create more shades and cool air inside of the building. This amazing idea work well on cooling by building itself instead of using air conditioner.

Sunlight is used for creating the beautiful light cross. the light source in Osaka is plump to keep climate well. The environment around the Church of Light are full coverd by woods. The light is the sprit of the design idea and the cross is only way that the nature light ican entry. That makes the people in church feel like in heaven.

ENVIRONMENT

The city Osaka’s west side open to Osaka Bay. It belongs to humid subtropical zone. The four seasons are pretty distincted. The tempertures all year are pretty warm in Osaka. And there is more rain in summer, less in winter.

Ando follow the path of site to design the composition of church asa V shape. It shows the efficiency of space using by Ando. On the other hand, Ando places high concrete wall on the side, which faces to street. With this design, the wall can reject the noises created by traffic to keep quiet inside of church.

The whole project has two parts: on the north side is sunday school, and the southpart is church.Those two volumes are mostly same but have different orentation. The interval space between those two building is the main entence.

STRUCTURE The most excellent part he used in his building is the main type of materials used in the building- concrete and glass. Fully enclosed thick walls and clean transparent glass formed a very strong contrast. So that the interior space is divided into two kinds of feeling, which are light and dark. It brings the church a sense of mystery and sacred. In addition , the outer surface of the two materials are givinga smooth feeling, forming a formal unity. Otherwise, the concrete Ando used is called Faced concrete (As-cast Finish Concrete / BareConcrete), which belongs to a casting molding , without any decoration. Faced concrete has smooth surface, uniform color, angular, no collision damage and pollution. It is very natural and dignified.

The church consists of a concrete cuboid and a contrast of 15 째 across the wall structure, embedded in three rectangular 5.9m diameter sphere . This channel walls separate the space into the chapel and the inlet section. The Acrossing wall does not touch the cuboid, the interstice area was filled bu glass or left blank. People can enjoy the reflecting light and landscape from the interstice og the esll snf cuboid. By the way, the wall also rejects the noice come from the outside street to keep the inside of church quiet.
