A lot of hoteliers can’t believe their eyes when they see their electricity bill. Depending on the model and age of the system, costs for heating rooms and water are not cheap either.

They may be almost more concerned that there will not be enough hot water for their guests at any time of the day or night. And this water needs to be flawless. Hygiene is of the utmost importance – legionella would destroy the reputation of a hotel. Smart transformation at Hoval Tradition and digitisation: Conflict or symbiosis? Hoval sees great advantages and opportunities in digitisation for end customers, planners and installers. But this will require everyone to learn new things and change their way of thinking.

Company founder Gustav Ospelt was a visionary and innovator. The stove that he patented more than 70 years ago doubled as a central heating system. A few years later, he announced that he was moving the heating system down to the basement. He developed the first steel boiler with an integrated hot water tank. The product was met with huge demand during the economic boom of the late 1950s and the 1960s.

Today, Hoval’s portfolio is much more diversified. Although 70 years may not seem like a particularly long time, in the canton of Zurich in Switzerland, for example, only one percent of companies have been around for more than 70 years. Many companies do not manage to move with the times.

“Our company has had to drastically change course a few times too,” says Peter Gerner, co-CEO of the Hoval Group.

Digitisation and the value of a family

Digitisation is another major challenge for companies today. Small and mediumsized family companies, such as Hoval with its approximately 2000 employees, are happy to set themselves apart from large corporations or purely digital companies through the personal relationships they form with their customers and partners. Who knows anyone by name at Amazon – except Jeff Bezos? Hoval, on the other hand, sees itself as one big family. This family atmosphere is also carried over to relationships with long-standing customers and partners.

Hoval has invested significant resources into developing a universal control and regulation system for all its products, which are connected to Hoval’s own ERP system (Enterprise Resource Planning system) via a gateway and IoT platform (Internet of Things platform). This digital link will make work easier for everyone. However, only a relatively small proportion of newly installed heating systems are networked in this way. It seems possible that even installers are often shying away from this development. So, it looks like Hoval still has some convincing to do, but personal relationships will make this easier.

Hoval sees digitisation as a positive change: “It is our chance, our future – especially for us as a traditional but dynamic company that sets itself apart through our personal relationships,” says Peter Gerner.

The ivy-covered Pennyhill Park Hotel is like something from a dream – a luxury resort just a stone’s throw from Windsor Castle. The hotel operators rely on Hoval, just like many other 5-star hotels across the land.

History of success Ivy grows up the stone façade of the hotel, and this façade tells a story of success. The property in the west of London, which is directly connected to Windsor Castle via London Road, can be traced back to the accomplished and skilful civil engineer James Hodges, who built it in 1849 and who also lived there. An orangery was added in 1880, which was renovated again in 1903 and 1935.

It may just be a coincidence, but since 2015 – the year when the Hoval ® UltraGas condensing boiler was installed in the hotel – the Pennyhill Park Hotel has won several awards.

It was named “Residential Spa of the Year” and was one of the top three “Large Hotels”. The Group that the hotel is a part of – “Exclusive Hotels and Venues” – was also named “AA Eco Hotel Group of the Year”.

Pennyhill Park, with grounds spanning 123 acres or around 50 hectares, has been an exclusive hotel since 1972.

Over the past 30 years, the majority of 4 and 5* hotels in London have used Hoval for their heating and hot water needs.

The latest system solution for listed establishment

“The Maximilian is one of the most beautiful inns in the Tegernsee valley. It’s classy, but not pretentious, instead it’s very traditional,” says Alois Gartenleitner. He has taken on the lease together with his wife Martina.

Everything that goes into making a cosy place to eat and drink needs to happen behind the scenes. The renovated inn Gasthof Herzog Maximilian in Gmund am Tegernsee now has a system solution from Hoval working in the background.

After 30 years of sitting empty, the inn has finally rediscovered its purpose. The impressive listed building in the Bavarian Gmund now once again houses a restaurant on the ground floor. The restaurant can seat 150 guests comfortably and there is a hall that can accommodate another 75 people. Duchess Maria Anna of Bavaria and the Tegernsee brewery bought the property after years of uncertain developments and the building was completely renovated over two years, complying with the strictest conservation regulations.

His description of the inn – “classy, but not pretentious, instead it’s very traditional” – could also apply to the system solution that the builder selected to heat the rooms and the ® water. Two Hoval UltraGas condensing boilers, each with an output of 100 kW and operated in a cascade formation, are at the centre of the system. This system also incorporates a Hoval CombiVal drinking water tank with a capacity of 800 litres. The CombiVal preheats 300 litres for the inn and the doctor’s offices, which are located on the first floor of the building. The top floor of the magnificently restored establishment has its own CombiVal, which holds 200 litres.

Efficient and environmentally friendly ® The entire system is controlled via Hoval TopTronic : The individual components, which are already very energy efficient and recover heat, are even more powerful when they are combined in a system. This is then made even more efficient ® by the clever TopTronic control system.

However, it was also instrumental for the Gasthof Herzog Maximilian project that the architects, planners and heating engineers had known each other for years and that they work together with Hoval. When Erich Bergmüller extended his hotel in Wagrain a few years ago, the heating system also needed to be upgraded. “Renewable energy was definitely something we wanted to consider. The pellet system solution from Hoval stood out for us right away.”

Cascade solutions with two or three wood pellet boilers or the integration of

District heating: everything from a single source, all with one control system A complete system package with an energy centre and substations from a single source. An entire district heating network that can be controlled with a single system: absolutely achievable. Proof of this can be found in Eschen in the Principality of Liechtenstein. And the single source that provides everything including the control technology? Hoval.

As of late, the beating heart of Eschen has been hiding in the basement of the town’s community centre – the heating system of a new, emerging district heating network. The heating system generates heat in two Hoval BioLyt (160) wood pellet boilers – this produces an output of around 320 kW. Depending on the heating requirements, just one or both of the boilers can be in operation ® on a rotating basis. A Hoval UltraGas (900 D) twin boiler covers peak loads in the winter. The bivalent system therefore generates the majority of the annual heat required without producing any CO2 emissions. This will be even more environmentally friendly once the wood chip boiler from the existing “primary school heating system” is connected to the new heating system in a further planned stage.

The hot water is stored in a Hoval heating tank with a capacity of 9000 litres, which is exclusively available in Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

Hoval TransTherm transfer stations transfer the heat produced in the heating system from the pipeline to the individual customers. This includes a TransTherm pro with an output of 280 kW for the local council, the nearby church and the community hall, a TransTherm pro with an output of 100 kW for the supermarket on the other side of the road, and a TransTherm giro with an output of 60 kW for a medical centre.

Environmentally compatible and reliable The Liechtenstein Gasversorgung (LGV) gas supply authority initiated and operates the district heating network.

“During the design and planning stages, we were guided by two requirements – environmental compatibility and supply reliability,” says Michael Baumgärtner.

He is responsible for the heat supply/ renewable energies department at LGV. It was also a foregone conclusion that the existing “primary school heating system” would be connected to the new “community centre heating system”.

“We will construct the line needed for this in 2019,” says Michael Baumgärtner.

Once this has been completed, the number of heat consumers will increase: “We expect to have 30 customers in the long term, including planned new construction projects.”

There are fewer project participants in both project planning and construction, coordination becomes easier, and the number of interfaces is manageable – during operation too.”

A programmable logic controller (PLC) from Hoval can be used to premix the water in the pipelines, which minimises heat loss in the lines. By measuring negative pressure points in the district heating network, the PLC can operate the district heating pumps at the required minimum using speed control. This saves electrical energy and ensures that every customer is always supplied with enough heat. The control system visualises the data points of the centre control system.

Traffic problems and other hurdles When Joseph Bazalgette submitted his plan for Tower Bridge in the 1870s, he had no idea that the approval alone would take years to come through. The city was experiencing tremendous traffic problems and this new construction was supposed to resolve them. A new roadway across the Thames was required without impeding shipping traffic.

Finally, in 1894, the bridge was officially opened and the whole world marvelled at the feat of engineering. Tower Bridge could raise its lower bascules in just two minutes to allow ships to pass through.

The recent refurbishment of an exhibition space demonstrated once again how important meticulous forward planning is.

Partnership and the construction company T Brown Group also planned to renovate the outdated heating system.

As the appointed purveyor to the Queen, Hoval was able to stand out from the other competitors. Hoval was therefore granted the honour of providing visitors to Tower Bridge a warm welcome with visionary technology.

The goosebumps you get after walking along the glass floor of the footbridge – 42 metres above the murky Thames – quickly disappear when you step inside the temperate exhibition and event spaces.

The first challenge of the heating system modernisation project was that regulations required the use of a condensing boiler. However, the listed building status prevented the necessary technical measures from being performed inside the bridge pillars of the neo-Gothic building.

After lengthy discussions, the officials of the City of London finally granted special permission for a customised, non-condensing boiler system comprising four highly efficient low-NOx Hoval SR-plus 225 boilers. And the ErP Directive was not the only reason for the decision to provide fully modulating burners separately in both boiler houses.

15 m above the ground may even have impressed the great Victorian master architect Bazalgette. He would certainly have been amused by the fact that the majority of deliveries had to be made at night. This was to avoid causing traffic problems on Tower Bridge and in the centre of London.

“Accessing the boiler houses down narrow passageways, up steep staircases and ladders and around tight corners was the next hurdle,” recalls John Pearson, Project Design Manager at T Brown. “This is why Hoval supplied the boiler completely knocked down (CKD). All individual components were assembled and welded on site and the hydraulics were then inspected by Hoval engineers. Then the housing, burners and control systems could be assembled.”

Entrepreneur Max Maier has transformed an industrial area of the city into a harbour of innovation, where people live, work and exchange ideas. This man’s work is never done. To him, modernisation means constant and relentless development. Max Maier, who took over the Eisfink refrigerator production plant at the start of the 1980s and saved it from going under, has also 2 renovated the 200,000 m industrial area in the Weststadt district of Ludwigsburg, which used to be home to Eisfink.

He developed the buildings and the site to transform this area into the urban harbour.

Hub of creativity The “urban harbour”, which is still undergoing continuous regeneration, is often described using elaborate metaphors: The urban harbour is a unique mooring for people and companies, a hub for creativity and collaboration, a driving force behind the future of work and living.

In the urban harbour, established companies, such as Bosch, Kärcher and Porsche, work side by side with start-ups. Industrial, commercial and service enterprises have also made the harbour their home. The space also comprises restaurants and a range of event rooms of all sizes.

The officials from the Ludwigsburg municipal utilities company, who have made a name for themselves due to their environmental awareness, are well aware of the high energy efficiency and low pollutant emissions of the Hoval ® UltraGas . And there were plenty of other convincing reasons that helped them make their choice. In terms of hydraulics, the two twin boilers were relatively easy to integrate into the complete solution. In addition to this, the boilers have a minimal footprint considering their exceptional output.

Heat, cooling and power from a CHP plant The most recent modernisation in the urban harbour is just a few months old. The Stadtwerke Ludwigsburg-Kornwestheim municipal utilities company (SWLB) launched the new “EnergieHafenWest” energy centre for the harbour and the Werkzentrum Weststadt district in spring 2018. The combined heat and power plant (CHP) produces heat and electricity at the same time. According to Max Meier: “It is significantly more efficient than a conventional power plant.”

Medical innovation – and Hoval delivers big time It takes something physically large to be able to create something of medical significance, even on a microscale. The Biocev scientific centre in Vestec, on the south-east outskirts of Prague, is conducting research into molecules and developing new treatment methods. Heat for the centre is provided by high-power Hoval boilers.

The Biocev research centre is developing new biomedical treatment methods.

This triumph has caused something of a stir – a team of scientists at Biocev have discovered a treatment method to destroy the tumour cells for one of the most aggressive forms of breast cancer.

600 researchers

The heat required at Biocev for heating rooms and service water is provided by three high-power Hoval Max-3 boilers with an output of 1250 kW each. The three-pass boilers produce an efficiency of up to 94%. Their patented heating surfaces are designed to evenly stimulate the combustion gases, even in a low operating phase. This means that heat is transferred more effectively and efficiency increases. In addition, fewer aggressive substances are deposited, the risk of corrosion decreases and the service life increases.

The centre, which focuses on biotechnology and biomedicine, will continue to make a name for itself. It is a joint venture of six scientific institutes, including the Institutes for Molecular Genetics, Microbiology and Experimental Medicine. All six are part of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. The idea for the centre emerged in 2006, and the European Union supported its construction. The costs amounted to 2.3 billion Czech koruna, equivalent to approximately 103 million Swiss francs or 90 million euros. By 2020, around 400 researchers and 200 Masters and PhD students will be researching and developing new treatment options at

This reduces the flame temperature and even fewer pollutants are emitted as a low-NOx burner has already kept the emissions at a low level. When it comes to assessing Hoval products, no one is more discerning than the Hoval team itself. That is why Christian ® Graf now has two TopVent TV recirculation heating units in his workshop, where he services cars from the Hoval fleet. ® A TopVent TW also releases an air curtain from above the frequently used garage door as soon as it opens. Christian’s first impression: “Immediately warmer – and I can hardly hear the units.” ® A TopVent TV-2 recirculation heating unit has recently been installed on the wall behind the lifting platform area. With a heat output of 6.1 kW (50/40°C), it is the smallest of the three ® output variants. The largest, a TopVent TV-5 with a heat output of 21.5 kW (50/40°C), is suspended from the 3.7 m high ceiling in the centre of the workshop space next door.

Both emit heat fully and quickly, and the space underneath is left completely free. Christian Graf can also easily set the room temperature and the fan speed for the air volume via the EasyTronic control system. His heaters are immediately adjusted in line with this.

No major planning – easy installation ® The new TopVent TV is the perfect product when you need an effective solution without major planning. The mechanical,

Christian Graf no longer feels the chill on a cold winter’s day when he raises the door to move the next car onto the ® lifting platform. The TopVent TW recirculation heating unit generates an air curtain. This forms an effective barrier, meaning the cold air stays outside. ® The TopVent TW takes up very little space and visually integrates so well into the wall that you hardly notice it.

Available in lengths of 1 m, 1.5 m and 2 m, it can be mounted horizontally or vertically with connection to the power supply and hot water system. The mounting bracket is included and enables installation in both directions.

One control system for everything The EasyTronic control system can be used to switch ® recirculation heating units, such as the TopVent TV and ® the TopVent TW, on and off and to control the temperature and fan speed for the air volume. The EasyTronic also energetically synchronises boilers and recirculation heating units. It has an output to control an external pump or a valve. The EasyTronic also has a contact as an input for the recirculation heating units. If, for example, the door of a warehouse opens, the door contact triggers the air curtain ® of the TopVent TW. Hoval also provides a base, which allows the control system to be surface-mounted if the device is being retrofitted.

The intuitive EasyTronic system combines heating units to form a complete system. Up to ten units of the same type can be controlled via a single control unit.

The quietest air/water heat pump for domestic use The Schibli family has put its trust in independent, energy-efficient heating – with the quietest system currently available on the market: Hoval UltraSource®.

New situations require new solutions. The Schibli family’s detached house was formerly connected to an adjacent heating system via the district heating pipeline. Due to a change in the ownership structure, the family decided that they wanted to heat their home independently in the future. ® They opted for a clever combined solution: The UltraSource B air/water heat pump heats the house, provides hot water, and keeps the home cool in the summer.

The family already recognised Hoval as a reliable provider – not least because of the red cars they often saw out on the roads. After receiving expert advice, they decided to go for an environmentally friendly air/water heat pump from the latest generation.

A busy day On the day of the installation and commissioning, there was a lot of hustle and bustle both inside and outside the family’s house. The installation team worked meticulously and made quick progress. All those involved in the planning were on site – customer Rilana Schibli, Hoval coordinator Giuseppe Campanella, the project manager from the installation company Käufeler AG Fabian Käufeler – even the family’s three Maine Coon cats were on hand to keep an eye on proceedings.

It was particularly important to us that the system didn’t make any noise.

An environmentally compatible system: the air/water heat pump With this new system, the Schibli family is taking responsibility for their energy and the environment, without ® forgoing any comfort or convenience. The UltraSource extracts heat from the ambient air in an eco-friendly manner and brings it into the home. This split device consists of two units – one set up inside and the other outside. This frees up valuable inside space, which is ideal for a family home.

Quiet system for a peaceful night’s sleep The engineers from Hoval have devised intelligent solutions for output adjustment, night operation and noise-reducing storage and enclosure. All of this guarantees quiet operation ® and a peaceful night’s sleep. The UltraSource is so quiet that it can even be set up in the home office if there isn’t space in the utility room. At the Schibli family’s home, the indoor unit was set up in the garage together with the hot water boiler. The newly designed outdoor unit from Hoval is one of the quietest on the market.

More space in the bathroom A bonus side effect of the new solution was that the old boiler could be removed from the bathroom. This made space for the washing machine and tumble dryer. “As a family, laundry quickly piles up, so I’m pleased that we’ll be able to keep these appliances nearby from now on,” explains Rilana Schibli.

Family cooperation Two technicians worked together to install the outdoor unit – one from Hoval and one from Käufeler AG. The installation company from Wettingen specialises in sheet metal work and sanitation, heating and ventilation systems. The family business in its fourth generation has already been working with Hoval products for some time now. Project manager Fabian Käufeler calls himself a “Hoval child” because he grew up surrounded by the products: “Alongside the extremely reliable products, we are particularly impressed with the service, the excellent collaboration – and most of all, the professional communication with Hoval.”

Washing hands with heat from Baldingen After just a few hours, it was possible to make a seamless transition from the old connection to the new system. And by the time the family got home from work or playing that evening, they were able to wash their hands using water that had been warmed by the heat captured from right outside their door.

A control system that listens to the weather report It’s easy to control the heat pump system from your sofa on a tablet or ® smartphone using the TopTronic app from Hoval. This app compares various key figures and presents them clearly.

Rilana Schibli can get an efficiency overview with just one tap of the finger and can perform optimisations if necessary. The current weather information is taken into account when heat is being generated. This also saves valuable energy.

Hoval takes a systematic approach to heating and ventilation in major logistics centres This logistics company is one of the largest in Croatia, sending out more than a million shipments every day. Total weight: more than 20 tonnes. Now it is building a new logistics centre close to the capital Zagreb. High energy efficiency is one of its strategic goals – and Hoval is providing a comprehensive solution to help achieve this.

The time is right, because existing solutions are simply no longer sufficient.

The company, which enjoys considerable success in the logistics sector, is upgrading its business to the very latest technical standards. In doing so, it is making the biggest financial investment in its history by building a new logistics centre in the town of Velica Gorica, south of Zagreb. The budget has been set at 345 million kuna, equivalent to approximately 53 million Swiss francs or 46 million euros.

An excellent location The complex is taking shape on a site 2 covering a total area of 70,200 m . Its location in Velica Gorica has been chosen wisely. High-speed roads, rail links and Zagreb Airport – the largest in the country – are located in the immediate vicinity. The first-class traffic routes are also a bonus for the 1400 people who will be working in the logistics centre.

Construction work

The ventilation and heating system

Construction work started in June 2017 and the first of the two phases is due to be completed by early 2019. The work includes the logistics centre itself, a high-bay warehouse, the data centre, a substation for the power supply and the heating plant. There will also be more than 500 parking spaces for the company’s vehicle fleet and employees’ cars, as well as 16,000 m2 of green space. The second phase will focus primarily on the construction of the main office building.

The integral ventilation and heating system for the new logistics centre has been designed by Hoval Croatia in collaboration with planners from APZ inženjering. The networking of the technically advanced components to create a powerful and energy-efficient complete system looks to the future in the same way as the logistics centre itself.

The strategy The new logistics centre is part of a comprehensive development strategy.

The company has committed itself to improving processes and introducing innovations. It also intends to tap into new markets, and logistics capacities are very much a part of this plan.

Moreover, “digitisation is not the future,” is the message from the company’s managing board. “Digitisation is happening today.”

® 14 decentralised RoofVent ventilation ® units and 15 TopVent recirculation ® units will be controlled with TopTronic software. The network in the logistics centre covers six different zones and is linked to the higher-level building management system via the BACnet protocol.

The heating system is controlled ® entirely via TopTronic software. The software obtains weather forecasts from the internet and coordinates operation in line with them. This reduces the energy consumption significantly, not least because the individual components are already working efficiently and in perfect harmony.

Solar thermal energy in operation in 4 minutes Property owners are extremely in the know these days when it comes to heating water and their home. Hoval customer Urs Kobler closely supervised the commissioning of the UltraSol® thermal solar collectors on his house. Luckily it only took a few minutes – thanks to the SolKit ® aqua drinking water storage tank.

Almost twenty years ago now, Urs Kobler was among the solar pioneers. When his semi-detached house was first built in Steinach, not far from the shores of Lake Constance in Switzerland, he wanted to collect solar thermal energy

on his roof. The south-facing roof was perfect for this and he accepted that he would be somewhat mocked by his neighbours. Since then, technology has advanced immensely. The time had come to replace the old panels.

Urs Kobler: UltraSol has passed the test. ®

Mr Kobler, since spring 2018, you ® have had two UltraSol solar collectors on your roof instead of the three panels you had previously.

The summer of 2018 was extremely hot. What have been your first impressions?

This system incorporates the new ® SolKit aqua drinking water storage ® tank. You opted for the SolKit aqua LT model. It holds 500 litres and is designed to work in combination with a heat pump. But there is still a non-condensing oil-fired boiler in the utility room that you share with your neighbour. How does that work?

Urs Kobler: The first thing that springs to mind is how it compares to the previous system. The stagnation temperature used to be so hot that the carrier fluid that transported the sun’s heat often flocculated. These flakes and lumps clogged up the pump and I had to replace it, as well as the fluid, several times over the years.

Urs Kobler: The next step is to replace the oil heating system with an air/water heat pump. Then the system will be complete and will operate using exclusively renewable energy sources.

In fact, two days before this interview, photovoltaic modules were installed on ® the roof in addition to the two UltraSol collectors, meaning we are now producing CO2-free electricity with a view to incorporating the heat pump.

These problems are now a thing of the past. The specific design of the ® UltraSol means that the maximum temperature is no longer reached.

The low stagnation temperature also prevents excess pressure in the system.

Of course, we will also control the heat ® pump using TopTronic , and then it will even integrate precise weather forecasts via the internet connection. For example, if a sunny winter morning is forecast, our heat pump will not run at full blast that morning.

Last summer, air temperatures were very high for days and weeks at a time.

This really put the two solar collectors through their paces and they passed with flying colours.

This is technology of the highest standard. It provides energy efficiency, conserves materials and protects the environment. ® Let’s go back to the new SolKit aqua drinking water storage tank. It seems to save a lot of hassle!

Urs Kobler: You can say that again.

The technician who came to commis® sion the two newly installed UltraSol collectors and to fill up the heat ® exchanger for the SolKit aqua drinking water storage tank with carrier fluid genuinely only took four minutes to do so, just like Hoval had predicted.

Needless to say, the previous installation was slightly more complex. It’s amazing that a process that used to take half a day to complete is now just a matter of a few minutes. The man seamlessly injected the fluid using a special tool kit that was provided with the tank and commissioned the system at the same time. This system permits – in fact it requires air, and air was formerly a no-go in solar circuits.

I’m a sceptical person and not easily pleased. But now I have a system that will be truly state of the art in combination with the heat pump.

As well as photovoltaic modules, two thermal UltraSol ® collectors ensure there is enough hot water.

Control technology has also taken huge strides forward over the past two decades. Has it become more convenient too?

Urs Kobler: Control is now much more than just a simple on/off button. The ® UltraSol pump is able to modulate, and ® the TopTronic controls the modulating operation. It is connected to the internet, and this online connection means that the Hoval experts in the regional centre in eastern Switzerland are able to provide me with direct remote support, ® so the TopTronic now regulates operation according to our individual hot water needs. It’s different on weekdays and on the weekend, but the ® TopTronic takes care of all of that.

Innovative and customised: At the CE-Colo data centre in Prague, ServeCool blows the exhaust air from an adiabatic system in an upwards direction.

ServeCool – the flagship solution for innovative data centres Customised cooling in data centres: This is a task for ServeCool and the Hoval engineers with their wealth of experience. For the Czech T-Mobile subsidiary CE-Colo, this combination brought together maximum reliability and extreme energy efficiency. The result was an impressive, innovative cooling system.

“Accommodating special requests – this is what motivates us to get to grips with something new that will ultimately benefit all our customers,” explains Christian Richter, Data Centre Segment Manager at Hoval. As a pioneer in adiabatic data centre cooling, Hoval wins over its customers with its expertise, advice and solutions. All of this was needed to create a cooling system for the data centre of the Czech T-Mobile subsidiary. In the new DC7 data centre in Prague,

CE Colo offers its customers highly available colocation space as a “carrier neutral provider”. It can generate 6 MW of power up to the final expansion stage, and is ultimately cooled by 64 ServeCool units from Hoval.

Over ninety percent external air cooling ServeCool operates using three cooling methods: The indirect free cooling system uses highly efficient cross-flow plate heat exchangers, which Hoval produces itself. They have the highest level of efficiency in this application on the market. This means they are able to ensure cooling 90% of the time. This makes ServeCool the leading cooling system in terms of its free cooling limit. The free cooling system works perfectly at a temperature difference of just 3 K between the external air and the supply air. No one else is currently offering free cooling limits that are this high. At very low external temperatures, the innovative “condensation prevention system” also eliminates the need for costly re-humidification of the supply air.

If the temperature difference between the external air and the supply air rises above 3 K, an adiabatic cooling system intervenes. The external air is sprayed with water and this cools the circulating air of the data centre as well. When the adiabatic system is activated, this covers at least another 7% of the cooling time. This means that the expensive mechanical after-cooling system only needs to come into play at very high temperatures. On the one hand, it is clear that the energy efficiency of ServeCool far surpasses that of other similar systems. On the other hand, the system also has the Prague’s weather profile – and Hoval technology – make it possible to cool the data centre using adiabatic cooling 90% of the time.

system control element – zone control across several cooling units in the room. Even with this special solution, the design and set-up of the cooling system still facilitate the modular growth of the data centre.

Rapid commissioning After the initial meetings with the customer, the Hoval team set up a test site with the custom-developed cooling system and invited the customer to Vaduz. “The test system worked perfectly. It was a true representation of our abilities,” explains Christian Richter. Combining the required system with zone control and direct evaporators was a formidable task. “It’s not a challenge that every provider could have risen to,” adds Christian Richter proudly. The solution from Hoval achieves Tier-3 level (ANSI/TIA-942) with 99.999% availability, while maintaining maximum energy efficiency.

The Hoval production site in Istebné and the local team in Prague also made their mark as the first four ServeCool units were ready for use in no time at all.

The customer was so impressed by the ServeCool solution developed by Hoval that they created texts, symbols and drawings for the system to explain how it works. Large posters with diagrams showcasing the energy efficiency of the cooling system were also put up. In the future, every visitor to the data centre will see that T-Mobile thoroughly lives up to its promise of “innovative technical solutions”. Hoval is happy to have been able to help them fulfil this promise.

Compared to the space required for conventional mechanical cooling systems, ServeCool is also highly space-efficient.

Conversion of the standard model for CE-Colo The customer CE-Colo requires maximum availability of its data – in other words, maximum reliability. It therefore needs to be possible to switch the system to purely mechanical operation in case of emergencies – that is to say, when there is no supply of external air. To achieve this, the standard cooling registers with water cooling have been replaced by direct evaporators. A particularly clever feature is that the exhaust air from an adiabatic system is usually blown out horizontally through the outer wall, whereas at the T-Mobile data centre, it is blown upwards. This means that the exhaust air cools the condensers of the direct evaporator circuit at the same time. The customer also requested a special

Hotels consume electricity in huge quantities. If you add a spa area, the electricity and heating bill becomes almost insupportable. A combined heat and power unit can change this. A gas motor powers a generator to produce electricity and the waste heat is used as thermal energy.

Quiet and compact The Hoval PowerBloc EG (20) now allows electricity and heat to be produced for smaller output ranges. In doing so, it applies the principle of combined heat and power, while maintaining extremely low noise levels and taking up the smallest possible space.

The PowerBloc EG (20) operates with an industrial motor that has been specifically optimised for Hoval and a watercooled induction generator. All the heat is acquired via a heat exchanger, a cast exhaust manifold and a cast condensing exchanger and this provides hot water and room heating up to a temperature of 95°C. The electricity produced by the generator is fed directly into the building for personal energy usage and the surplus electricity is fed into the public network. PowerBloc EG (20) can be

UltraSource : How much output would you like? ®

New models with the usual Hoval quality and unbeatable energy efficiency: Alongside the successful UltraSource ® models with an output of 11 or 13 kW, new models with an output of 8 and 17 kW are being added in 2019. This will make UltraSource ® suitable for use in apartment buildings as well as for owners of single-family properties. ® Until now, UltraSource B was “only” available with an ® output of 11 kW, and Ultrasource T with an output of 13 kW. The two lines will be expanded from July 2019 to include models with an output of 8 and 17 kW. This will bring the range up to a total of ten products – differing according to house size, insulation and the number of people.

® The UltraSource B line gets its energy from the air – these are air/water heat pumps that are extremely easy to install. ® The UltraSource T line gets its energy from groundwater or geothermal heat – a combined water/water or brine/water heat pump. The two B and T lines are available with or without an integrated 200 litre hot water storage tank, which saves space. All the connections are arranged so that the units can be placed in a corner.

Hoval has been supplying customers with heat pumps since 1975 – the technology of the future. In some countries, most owners of one or two-family homes already rely on heat pumps. In other countries, they are in the process of replacing gas boilers as the most common heating system.

“We have been seeing growth in the double digits for years,” says a delighted Stefan Müller.

“The 17 model is even suitable for use in apartment buildings,” says Stefan Müller, head of product management. The Hoval external sales team supports interested installers with data to assist with the planning for heat pumps.
