Inmid-Februaryhistoricallytherewas aRomanfestivalcalledLupercalia which,“celebratedthecoming ofspring,includedfertilityritesand thepairingoffofwomenwithmenby lottery.”However,attheendofthe5th centurythePopeforbidthecelebration ofLupercaliaandchangedittoSt. Valentine’sDay.Thereissomeconfusionhistorically,however,asitwas notrecognizedasadayofromance untilthe14thcentury.
WhowasSaintValentine?Itdepends onwhichwearetalkingabout,and thatiswhereitgetstricky.ThefollowingisfromBrittanica.com:“Although therewereseveralChristianmartyrs namedValentine,thedaymayhave takenitsnamefromapriestwho wasmartyredabout270CEbythe emperorClaudiusIIGothicus.Accordingtolegend,thepriestsigneda letter“fromyourValentine”tohisjailer’sdaughter,whomhehadbefriend-

Add2inchesofwatertoalargesaucepanandbringtoaboilovermediumhigh heat.Thensetamediumglassorceramicmixingbowlontop,makingsureit’ touchingthewater(thiscreatesa“doubleboiler”).
Tothemixingbowl,addfinelychoppedcocoabutterandletmelt–2-3minutes.
Oncemelted,addthemaplesyrupanduseawhiskorwoodenspoontomixuntil fluidandthoroughlycombined.Removebowlandsetonaflatsurface.Also,turn offstove-topheatandsetsaucepanaside.

Herbsthatcanbeputdirectlyinwater andkepttherethroughoutthewinter astheycontinuetogrowincludebut arenotlimitedto:mint,rosemary, thyme,dill,basilandmanyothers.
Manyivyplantscanalsobekeptin waterincludingthepopularpothos ivyplant.
AnotherrecentplantIhaverecently triedthatisabsolutelythrivingina jarofwaterisWanderingJew,ithas evenbeenflowering!
TheLouisiana Purchaseof1803 sparkedanew waveofexplorationintheUnited Statesasanumber ofexpeditions werecommissionedatthedirectionofPresidentThomasJefferson toexplorethenewAmericanfrontier. Themostfamousofthese expeditionswastheLewisandClark Expeditionof1804-1806,whichexploredtheUpperMissouriRiverValley. Ofthefourmajorexpeditions,one lookedtoexploretheRedRiverValley tothefrontiersofTexas butbecamethemostdisastrousofall.
TheideaofatrekalongtheRed Rivertofindoutmoreaboutthereach oftheriver,itswildlife,andtheNative Americantribesthatlivedalongithad beenconceivednotlongafterLouisianahadbeenpurchasedfrom France. WilliamDunbar,theScottish scientistandMississippiplanterwho hadimmigratedtotheUnitedStates beforetheAmericanRevolution,was chosenbyJeffersontoplanthisventure. In1805,Dunbar,freshfromhis successfulexpeditionalongthe OuachitaRiver,accepted,andbegan sketchingoutplansforthevoyageand theneedsfortheexplorers.
TheOuachitaRiverrunstothe NorthandtotheEastoftheRedRiver, snakingitswayfromwesternArkansasintoeasternLouisiana. Anexpeditionalong theRedRiverwasnotexpectedtobe dissimilartotheHunter-DunbarExpeditionasmostofitwouldbeinaclimatesimilartothoseintheOuachita RiverValley.
ThoughtheFrenchclaimedthe entireRedRiverValley,theSpanish continuedtoclaimtheareaforthemselves. AnexpeditionalongtheRed RiverwouldtakeAmericanexplorers closertoSpanishterritorythanany otherexpeditiontothis time. However,theSpanishhadadifficulttimemaintainingcontroloverthe areaoftheupperRedRiver,anda numberofSpanishexpeditionswere defeatingbylocalNativeAmerican tribes. RarelydidtheSpanisharmy evenattempttojourneyintothearea.
Bylate1805,theexpedition leadershipconsistedofCaptainRichardSparks,ThomasFreeman,asurveyorwhohadhelpedsurveythe southernborderfortheUnitedStates followingthe1795bordertreatywith Spain,andbotanistandmedicalstudentPeterCustisofVirginia. Asa result,theRedRiverExpeditionwas alsocalledtheFreeman-CustisExpedition. Theexplorers,numbering24at thispoint,leftfromtheMississippi RiverportatNatchez,MississippiTerritory,inApril1806andpushedtothe RedRiver.
Thegroupstoppedbrieflyat Natchitochesinwhatisnowwestern Louisiana. Here,theypickedupabout 20moretroopsasrumorsspreadthat theSpanishhadbeentippedoffabout theexpeditionandintendedtoconfrontit. Thoughunderstrictorders nottoengageinanymilitaryaction, theywerewillingtodefendthem-
selves. ThreeCaddoguideswerealso includedastheexpeditionwasabout tomoveintotheareaofwhatisnow NortheastTexas,NorthwestLouisiana, andSouthwestArkansas–theheartof Caddotribalterritoryatthetime. Theexpeditionmovednorthward throughwhatisnowtheShreveport areaandenteredwhatisnowArkansas byJune. Thetriphadbeenhampered bytherelativelyshallowwatersofthe riveratthetimebutwerepleasedwith theirefforts.
Theysoonbeganmovingwestwardas theRedRivertakesasharpturninArkansas. Thejourneyhadbeenwithout incidentuptothispoint. TheirencounterswiththeCaddoshadbeen welcoming. However,theCaddos warnedthattheyhadlearnedthat Spanishtroopswereontheirwayto capturetheexpedition. Theexplorers realizedtheentirejourneywasnowin dangerbutdecidedtopressforward regardless. Theiractionsoverthenextfewdays woulddeterminethefateoftheexpeditionandperhapseventhefateof relationsbetweentheUnitedStates andSpain. However,astheymoved westwardintoTexas,theyneverimaginedwhathadledtotheexpedition’s doom.
God’sloveand Hisprovisionof eternalsalvation isthegreatest peaceandsecuritywecould everhopefor. We heardHistruth, becameconvicted,wesaw ourneedfora Savior,andby faithwerepentedofoursin,andcried outforHimtosaveus.SecondCorinthiansassuresusthatwhenwereceive JesusasourLord,ouroldspirit becomesconvertedintoabrandnew creation.
Withinthisprocess,webecameachild ofGodandournameswerewrittenin theLamb’sBookofLife.Howdo weknowthis?BecausetheBible teachesinmanyplacesincludingJohn 3:16,thatwhoeverplacestheirtrustin Godshallbesaved.Afterwerepent andarebaptizedandfilledwiththe HolySpirit,God’splanisforusto grow stronginourfaith,andbecomespirituallymatureasthegoalistotakeonHis natureandcharacter–tobelike Him.
