GeorgewasbornSeptember29, 1926inDorchester,Texasasthe youngestchildof11toLawrence andMinnieCavender.Heattended schoolinDorchesteruntil hetransferredtoVanAlstyneHigh Schoolin1941.Therehemet FrankieColeduringstudyhall.She wantedhelpwithmathfromthis handsomeyoungman acrosstheroom.
Georgegraduatedin1943andleft thatOctobertoserveinthe
MerchantMarines,stationedinNew Orleans.Whilethere,heboughtweddingringsandsentthemtoFrankie. Whenthewarended,hereturned homewhereheandshemarriedinthe MethodistparsonageinVanAlstyne onOctober27,1945.
Theybecameactivemembersofthe HoweMethodistChurchsoonafter theirmarriage,wheretheyservedin variouscapacitiesovertheyears. Theiryearsinthechurchbroughtthe benefitofmanymeaningfultimes withfaithfulfriendswhohavecared forandenrichedGeorge’slifeuntil hispassing.
George’slifelongdesirewastobea
college,shewasinaterriblecaraccidentthatcausedhertoneedindividualizedcaretheremainderofherlife. GeorgeandFrankiecaredforher faithfullyuntilher passingin2003.
In1954,Georgeboughtlandnear Farmingtonwherehegrewcrops, raisedhogsandcattleandbuilthis home.In1978,hewasabletopurchasetheBrooksplacehehadlived onandfarmedformanyyears.Bythe timeheretiredGeorgehad raisedcropsfor62years.Heearned severalachievementsovertheyears includingOutstandingFarmerofthe YearforGraysonCountyin1986, Texas,MasterPorkProducer1988 andRegion5OutstandingConservationFarmerin 1990.
Throughtheseexperiencesand achievements,Frankiewasbyhis side.ButonOctober27,2020, Frankiepassedpeacefullyintheir homeonGeorge’sandher 75thweddinganniversaryasheheld herhand.
Georgewasaveryhumble,caring andgenerousmanwhohelpedmany peoplethroughtheyears.Hewasa well-respected,well-lovedmemberof hiscommunityandlivedhislifeina waytobeadmired.
TheGCECCavendersubstationand theFarmingtonwatertowerwillstand asremindersofGeorge’sconsiderationofhiscommunity,ashehasensuredwaterandelectricitywillbe availabletoallwhowillmoveintohis area.
Georgewasprecededindeathbyhis parents,hislovingwifeFrankie, daughterKaronandgrandsonBrooks. GeorgeleavesbehindhisthreechildrenandtheirspousesLynnCavender (Brenda),KayMills(Tony)andChris Cavender(Laura)
Georgehad9grandchildren,16great grandchildrenand6great-great grandchildren.

Well…whynot?
AndsoI’dlikeyoutocomewithme backtothesummerof1970,‘wayup northofFairbanks,Alaska,towhat wasoncethethrivinggoldmining villageofChicken,Alaska.Iwason myway,hitchhikingwithacanoe,to paddledownastretchoftheYukon RiverandtoseethecabinwhereJack Londonspentthewinter onceuponatime.
Justasanasidehere,hitchhikingwith acanoe,orwithasledand10dogs, wouldmakealengthyhow-tobookall bythemselves.Itdoesn’tsoundeasy, doesit?Itisn’t.
SowhatIwoulddoonthese “adventures”ofmine,(myboss,Larry Fanning,referredtothemasSlim’stin -cuptripsbecauseofallthescroungingIdid)isgoneatplacesandinterviewgreatpeople,andwritestuff.My columnintheAnchorageDailyNews braceyourself wascalled “Slim’sColumn.” Truthinadvertising.
SoIarrivedinChicken,Alaska,only tofindI’dnearlydoubledthelocal population.Inthefar-distantpast, Chickenwasanactualtown.When thegoldgaveout,sodidChicken.
Sowhatwasleftwas“thebusiness” consistingofagaspump,acoffee pot,somepostagestampsandacoupleofnicefolks.Buttherewas somethingelse,too. Therewasnotonlyanouthouse there,butitwaselectricallylighted. SowhereshouldIwritemycolumn? Inanelectricallylightedouthousein Chicken,Alaska.Naturally. Theraisingofpoultrythisfarnorthis uncommon,toomanylocalvarmints,includinganyresidentsled dogs,eatthem.Sohowdidthisgold campgetitsname?Ahh thereasonforthatcolumnonthewooden “desk”beneaththat20wattbulb.

Airdryingisalsoknownsimplyashangingthebouquetupsidedown.Thismethod forhowtodryflowersisbestforentirebouquetsorrobustflowerssuchasroses, lavender,strawflower,baby'sbreath,statice,celosia,gomphrenaandthistle.
Instructions:
-Stripexcessfoliagefromflowers.
-Cutstemstothedesiredlength,butleaveatleast6inches.
-Usearubberbandortwinetotiethestemstogether(ifyouhaveabouquet).
-Hangthemupsidedowninadark,dry,well-ventilatedarea.Keepingtheflowers outofdirectsunlightwillhelpthemretaintheircolor.
-Thedryingprocesswilltakeabouttwotothreeweeks.

TheFlyingTigers wereoneofthe firstAmericanair unitstofightthe JapaneseasWorld WarIIbegan. A gruffTexasnative, ClaireChennault, organizedthevolunteerforceinthemonthsbeforethe UnitedStatesenteredthewar. His determinationandthesuccessofhis pilotsdrewtheattentionoftheworld toanalmostforgottencornerofthe globalconflict. Chennault’sFlying Tigershelpedthelaythefoundation forthedefeatoftheJapaneseinChina. ClaireLeeChennaultwasbornin Commercein1890. Circumstances, however,ledthefamilytoleavefor NortheastLouisiana whileChennaultwasstillyoung. He provedtobeabrightstudentandeventuallyattendedLouisianaStateUniversityinBatonRougethroughtheReserveOfficerTrainingCorpsprogram.
In1913,heleftLSUtobecome aschoolprincipalbackinNortheast Louisiana. Hemarried,andthetwo hadeightchildrentogether. Whenthe UnitedStatesenteredWorldWarIin 1917,hecompletedhisofficertraining andwasassignedtoaviationsectionof thearmysignalcorpstotrainasapilot. Fromtherebeganhisloveaffair withtheskies.
AfterWorldWarI,hereturned toTexasforfurthercombatpilottrainingatEllingtonFieldinHouston. He spentmuchofthe1920saspartofan armyaircorpsstuntflyingexhibition teamandeventuallybecameacombat flightinstructorbasedatBrooksField inSanAntonioby1928. Inspiteofhis skills,hispricklypersonalityledto conflictswithhissuperiorsandfellow officers. Ashecontinuedtobepassed overforpromotions,heretiredfrom thearmyin1937.
Inthemeantime,Japanhad conqueredManchuriain1931andwas primingtoconquertherestofChina. ChennaultwasrecruitedbyChineseofficialsafterhisretirementto inspectChineseaircapabilities. Soon afterhisarrivalinJune1937,Japan attacked;andChennaulthadtoquickly rebuildthesmashedChineseAir Force. Herecruitedpilotsfromwhereverhecouldfindthem,trainedthem, andusedwhateverplaneshecould againsttheJapanese,includingboth AmericanandRussian. Butitwas havinglittleeffectasJapancontinued toadvancethroughout1938and1939.
Bylate1940,Chennaultanda delegationfromtheChinesegovernmenttraveledtotheUnitedStatesto makeadirectappealforaid. President FranklinRooseveltagreedtosend100 P-40Warhawkfighters. From there,Chennaultrecruited300Americanvolunteers,includingpilotsand groundcrew,astheFirstAmerican VolunteerGroup,paidatratessignificantlyhigherthantheregularmilitary. Withfewsuppliesinadistant partoftheworld,Chennaulthadto improvisewithmaterielandtactics.
ByAugust1941,hismen,who quicklybecameknownastheFlying Tigers,werefullyorganized. Inthe daysaftertheattackonPearlHarbor,
theFlyingTigerswereinaction,shootingdownnearly300Japanesefighters inamatterofdays,mostlyinsouthern China. Chennaultwonwideacclaim forleadingattacksagainstJapanwhile Americastillrecoveredfromtheinitial attacks.
WiththesuccessoftheFlying Tigers,thearmyabsorbedtheentire groupinApril1942,promotingChennaulttobrigadiergeneral. MostofwhathadbeentheFlyingTigersbecometheFourteenthAir Force,expanded,andmaintainingthe highaerialvictory rates. However,Chennaultcontinued toarguewithhissuperiorsoverpoliciesandtactics. Hisforcesundertook tasksfromairsupportforChinese forcestopreparationsfortheallied invasionofBurma.InJuly1945,he wasreassignedtoWashington, DC. HeretiredfromtheserviceasecondtimethatOctober. HereturnedtoChinain1946and servedfouryearsaspresidentofCivil AirTransportbeforereturningtoLouisiana. WayoftheFighter,hismemoirs,werepublishedin1949. Hewas diagnosedwithlungcancerin 1957. Hehadbeenaheavysmoker, andlittlecouldbedoneforhistypeof canceratthetime. Chennaultdecided tolivehislastdaystothefullestand tookatourofEuropeandTaiwan. By July1958,hisstrengthwasfading,but theairforcehonoredhimwithapromotiontolieutenantgeneral. Chennaultdiedafewdayslater inaNewOrleanshospitalattheageof 67.
Chennaultwaswidelyhonoredinthe yearsafterhisdeath. Hewasfeatured onastampinthe1980s. Hewasalso inductedintotheNationalAviation HallofFameinDayton,Ohio,in 1972.TheChinesegovernmentunveiledaseriesofmemorialsandmuseumshonoringtheFlyingTigers andChennaultstartingin2005tomark theendofWorldWarIIinChina, whilethegovernmentinTaiwanpresentedaspecialawardinmemory ofChennaulttohisfamily. HischildhoodhomeinCommerceisnownotedwithahistoricalmarker.
Thisisatrue storyabouta warhero namedRecklesswhoserved innumerous combatoperationsduringthe KoreanWar. Whatsunusual aboutthis? Recklesswasa horsewhocarriedsupplies andammunition,andwas alsousedtoevacuatethewounded. WeoftendonotconsidertheintelligenceofGod’screationandhowloving andloyaltheycanbe.Shewaschestnutcoloredwithablazeandthree whitestockings.Herbloodlineis unconfirmedbutwasthoughttobe primarilyMongolian.However,she didhavesomefeatures,particularlythe shapeofherhead,thatweresimilarto horsesofThoroughbredlineage.She wassmall,standingonly14hands andweighing900pounds.Shewas estimatedtobearoundthreeorfour yearsoldwhenshewaspurchasedby MarineLieutenantEricPedersenin October1952for$250.
Asaracehorse,shewassoldtothe Marinesbyherowner,ayoungKoreanstableboywhohadnamedthe horse
“AhChimHae”whichistranslated “LightofDawn.”Hesaidheneeded themoneytopurchaseanartificialleg forhissisterwhohadsteppedona landmine.Themarineswerefighting ondifficultmountainterrainandneeded helppackingheavymortarshellstothe frontline.Littledidtheyknowhow significantshewouldbe.The soldiersrenamedher“Reckless”asa contractionofthenameoftheRecoillessriflesthatshewouldbesupplying withammunition,andanodtothe daredevilattitudeassociatedwiththose whowereexpertswiththese weapons.

Forhertremendousaccomplishments duringthisbattle,Recklessbecamethe firstanimaltoreceivethemilitary rankofcorporalandlaterwaspromotedtosergeant.Shealsobecamethe firsthorseintheMarineCorpsknown tohaveparticipatedinanamphibious landing.
Booksandsongshavebeenwritten aboutherbravery,andaftershewas retiredandbroughttotheUnitedStates afterthewar,shemadeappearanceson televisionandspecialevents.Shewas officiallypromotedtostaff sergeantin1959bytheCommandmentoftheMarineCorps.Shegave birthtofourfoalsintheU.S.and passed awayinMay1968.Numerousstatues andplaqueshavebeenmadeinher honorandforherexemplaryserviceto theMarineCorps,Recklesswas awardedtwoPurpleHearts,aMarine CorpsGoodConductMedal,a PresidentialUnitCitationwithbronze star,theNationalDefenseService Medal,aKoreanServiceMedalwith3 bronzestars,theUnitedNationsKorea Medal,aNavyUnitCommendation, andtheAnimalsinWarandPeace MedalofBravery,amongothers.In 1997,RecklesswaslistedbyLIFE magazineasoneofAmerica’s100alltimeheroes.
