Sleep Deprivation in Paradise: The Costa Rican Rooster's Nocturnal Serenade
Ah, the elusive Costa Rican Rooster, also known in local folklore as "El Gallito de la Noche" or "The Little Rooster of Neverending Noise." While most roosters around the world have the common decency to crow at the first hint of dawn, the Costa Rican variant adheres to the "Pura Vida" lifestyle and crows whenever it darn well pleases.
by John QuamYou see, in the land of enchanting beaches, lush jungles, and coffee that can charm even the grumpiest of morning people, roosters have cultivated a taste for the unconventional. A bit of jazz, a sprinkle of salsa, a flair of unpredictability – that's their secret recipe for a never-ending serenade.
Should you embark on a quest to find this rogue rooster, be prepared for a journey unlike any other. Picture Indiana Jones, but instead of seeking a lost ark, you're in pursuit of a feathered fiend with a penchant for keeping the entire village awake at ungodly hours.
You may even find that he's hired an entire orchestra of crickets, frogs, and other nocturnal critters, all part of his grand symphony.
It's said that the Costa Rican Rooster is a fan of irony and timing. Just as you're about to drift into that sweet dream where you've won the lottery and are sipping a piña colada on a hammock, he'll belt out a crow that could wake a hibernating bear.
Local farmers have been known to consult this crowing phenomenon for agricultural advice. "Why bother with those fancy weather apps when we have Señor Rooster?" they'll say, laughing at the befuddled tourists who've had their slumber stolen.
Many have tried to reason with this rooster, offering him treats, sweet lullabies, or even a spot on "Costa Rica's Got Talent." But no, he marches (or rather, struts) to the beat of his own drum.
Should you finally locate this mythic creature, remember to approach it with caution and respect. Any attempt to stifle his creative expression could lead to a crow-off between villages that lasts well into the night, turning the serene Costa Rican landscape into a battleground of melodious mayhem.
In the end, perhaps it's best to embrace the "Pura Vida" philosophy yourself. Let the rooster's untimely crowing remind you that life is unpredictable, vibrant, and full of surprises. Besides, who needs alarm clocks when you have a feisty, free-spirited Costa Rican Rooster to start your day?

Compilation by Howler StaffThe birds of Costa Rica offer a fascinating glimpse into the incredible diversity and beauty of the country's avian population. With over 900 species calling Costa Rica home, it is no wonder that birdwatching has become a popular activity among locals and tourists alike. I Love Boobies
Where can we see boobies in Costa Rica?
by Tom SchultzOkay, stop giggling . The Booby family is one of my favorite pelagic birds . Pelagic means they spend most of their time at sea. Boobies spend most of their time just offshore, not very far out at sea, and nest on land. Beautiful to watch in flight, and always good for a laugh when they are on land due to their silly walks, at least silly to us.
Their name does not derive from where those of you still chuckling like Bevis and Butthead think it does. Their name is actually Spanish- bobo. Bobo is Spanish for fool or silly person, and since they are very clumsy and have a silly walk on land, they started being called bobos. The name got anglicized to the plural of boobies. Here in Costa Rica we also use bobo for the Motmots, but that is because that is how the motmot call sounds - an onomatopoeic name.
In the world, there are a total of only 6 species of boobies, and most people think of the Galapagos as the place to go see them, and they are correct. There are many to see there, and you are able to get close to them, especially the famous Bluefooted Booby, known for their incredible mating dances . But, there are only 3 of the six species to be seen there: the Red and Blue-footed and the Nazca.
Do you know where you can actually see all six species?

Long-Tongued Bat: Nectar-LovingAmericaMarvel
by Valerie TaylorThe Pallas' Long-tongued bat (Glossophaga soricina) is a fascinating mammal native to South and Central America. Its exceptional metabolism and preference for nectar, akin to hummingbirds, make it a crucial player in its habitat's ecological balance.
WILDLIFE newSeethe section:
With a long specialized tongue, this bat reaches deep into flowers to extract sweet nectar, and it occasionally supplements its diet with insects for added diversity. Its hovering feeding technique allows precise and efficient access to nectar.
Apart from its dietary habits, the Pallas' Longtongued bat unknowingly aids in pollination and seed dispersal, contributing significantly to the reproduction and genetic diversity of plants in its habitat.
Despite its ecological importance, this species faces threats like habitat destruction and climate change. Conservation efforts are essential to safeguard this unique creature and its vital contributions to the ecosystem.

Josh Bogle Photo by Nicolas Macchi Photo by Shivam RajdevReturn of the Scarlet Macaws
by Tom SchultzDepicted as the fiery god of light, Itzamna, in ancient Mayan legends, the scarlet macaw (Ara macao) is unmistakable. With a wingspan of nearly five feet and a squawk that can’t be ignored, these majestic birds are crowd pleasers that seem to love the attention. Always a treat for tired eyes, the lapas rojas, as it is known in Spanish, appears on the must-see list of most visitors to Costa Rica.
But it was almost not to be. From near extinction through ultimate survival and revival, the macaw’s Costa Rican comeback is an inspiring story of committed conservationists.
As the 20th century dawned, the species was widespread across 85% of the entire country. By 1980 it was almost gone. What happened?

When it comes to choosing the best women's sunglasses, several factors should be taken into consideration. Firstly, it is important to select a style that complements your face shape and personal taste. For instance, aviator sunglasses with their classic design often suit most face shapes, while cat-eye frames are ideal for those looking to make a retro statement. Additionally, consider the lens color and material for both fashion and practical purposes; darker lenses provide better protection against harmful UV rays, while lighter ones offer enhanced visibility in low-light conditions. Moreover, pay attention to the frame material - acetate is lightweight and durable, while metal frames exude a sleek aesthetic. Lastly, ensure a proper fit by checking the sunglass dimensions before purchase or trying them on in-store if possible. With your investment and diligence, you can confidently find the perfect pair to shield your eyes from sunlight while staying stylishly on trend.

What About the Men?
For some men, including my own husband, buying clothes is not fun. He would rather be at the hardware store, where he can spend hours looking for tools, than inside a clothing store, where he will only spend minutes. For many men, shopping means you go, you ask for what you NEED and you go home.
Luckily, other men see fashion as a way of expressing themselves. They are willing to take their time to shop and choose. This type of man — my favorite as a fashion business owner — might run the risk of looking too feminine for the hardware store guys. But there’s a new generation of men who are changing things; they are influenced by “YouTubers” and movie stars.

Celebrating Independence Day
Discover a few interesting facts about Costa Rica Independence Day and rejoice for its 201 years of freedom with the country on Sept. 15!
You'll notice businesses, homes and vehicles are proudly displaying blue, white and red Costa Rican flags, banners and decorations.
1. On Sept. 15, 1821, a crucial Central American congress signed “The Act of Independence” asserting that Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica were free and unbiased of the Spanish Empire.
2. Even though Sept. 15 is the day the independence was declared, it wasn't until October 13 that the news reached Costa Rica. The messenger had to travel by horseback from Guatemala with the official declaration.
3. There was no fight required for independence in Central America. With its resources depleted by the battle with Napoleon Bonaparte, and a few Latin American wars, Spain really supported independence because the area had ended up as a burden.
4. Costa Rica ultimately became a totally independent country in 1838, when it separated from the Central American Republic.
5. Sept. 15 is a countrywide holiday, with agencies, banks and other establishments closed.

Going Bananas
During the first half of the twentieth century, the United Fruit Company (UFCo.), a multinational corporation founded in 1899 in order to exploit the agricultural wealth of the Caribbean, was responsible for considerable amounts of propaganda, newspaper ads, postcards, books, etc. These were linked to the commercial and tourism activities of the United States in Caribbean countries.
The goal of UFCo was to influence the imperial vision of the Central American and Caribbean area from an iconographic point of view. In that world of images, postcards were very important as artifacts in which a visual discourse imposed an ideal of social imagination that was stimulated by the banana company.

Our Palmex roof really makes the whole look and feel of our house and we feel that it is a very high-quality material and the installation was professionally done. We had planned on a roof of tin, insulation, and teak... a fairly standard choice in our area, but made a late decision to use Palmex. I cannot imagine this house without Palmex and we are so happy that we made the right decision. When I am in a neighbor's house with a tin roof and the rain starts coming down it sounds like a Jamaican steel drum marching band and I can't wait to sit in my house and quietly watch the rain fall. Palmex has so many benefits in the tropics. Thanks!

Tom SchultzQatar: Contrasts, Ramadan Experiences
The first leg of our “Around the world in 40 days” trip took us from our home in Costa Rica through Miami then on an over 14 hour flight to Doha, Qatar, arriving around six in the evening. The city was still aglow with the lights and sounds of the recently ended World Cup, and also our discovery that we had arrived after sunset during Ramadan to the almost Christmas market-like evenings . For the next 30 hours from our base in the Souq Waqif , the ancient traditional market area of Doha, we experienced a land of extreme contrasts, from ancient
traditions to modern skylines. Camels slept next to skyscrapers, burka clad women shopped in jewelry stores. We learned about living and experiencing Ramadan, even the tradition of the Iftar cannon. We visited beautiful museums, had amazing vegetarian meals, got to sail in a traditional Dhow, and almost got arrested while birding. Enjoy the first part of the “Around the World in 40 Days” Video series .

by Terry CarlileMoon: Waves
The moon phases play a significant role in the sport of surfing, as they directly influence the tides and ocean conditions. The moon's gravitational pull affects the Earth's tides.
During a full or new moon, when the Earth, moon, and sun are roughly aligned, we experience higher high tides, known as spring tides. Conversely, during a quarter moon, the gravitational forces from the sun and moon partially cancel each other out, resulting in lower high tides, known as neap tides. Understanding these phenomena is essential for surfers as they rely on tides to create the optimal waves for riding.

We are the Children of Flowers
by Captain Paul WatsonTwo hundred million years ago during the Triassic period, the world changed dramatically. Prior to the Triassic, the landscape was a somber and endless panorama of green and brown, of plants that struggled to survive and reproduce with only the wind and water to spread their pollen.
To survive and flourish, plants evolved a wondrously beautiful way to reproduce by harnessing the bodies of animals to spread their seed. This created an intimate interdependence between animals and plants.
This was the evolution of the Angiosperm, the flowering plant, and the beginning of millions of years of seduction of animals that resulted in the flowering fruit bearing plants that today are the most dominant members of the plant family.
Flowering plants are the mothers of the modern animal world.
The emergence of flowering plants began the evolution of animals that could adapt to a permanent partnership with the plant world.
It was a mutually beneficial relationship. Animals assist with the reproduction needs of plants by spreading pollen and seeds and plants rewarding animals with sugary fruits.
This interdependence is the reason that humans, plants, and most other animals exist today.
The sex lives of plants involves a partnership between plants and insects, birds and mammals, so much so that most species of plants and animals cannot survive without each other.
To seduce animals, plants evolved to produce flowers and fruit. The flowers are the seduction to enable them to exchange pollen and the fruits are the reward for spreading the seeds.
The seduction involves color and smell, and the distribution of seeds relies on taste and texture.
This amazing interspecies sexual relationship led to competition amongst the plants to be as beautifully seductive as possible by exhibiting an attractive appearance and producing an alluring perfume.
Plants are not trying to seduce other plants. They are very much fixated on the seduction of animals.

Rica: and Process
Same-sex marriage has been legal in Costa Rica since May 26, 2020, due to the Supreme Court of Justice ruling. Costa Rica was the first country in Central America to recognize and perform samesex marriages.
You cannot “remarry” in Costa Rica if you are legally married. You may celebrate or renew the vows, but it will be a social event, not a legal one.
However, if you are a Costa Rican and marry abroad, you can register it before Registro Civil following the following process.
