INFLUENCE OF TRANSPORTATION

#02 Urban Landscape of Extreme Weather

As mentioned, the movie The Blues Brothers created an interesting story with the authentic use of the chracteristic of the cityscape of Chicago. There are tons of scenes of car chasing and mechanical dynamics of transporational infrastructures.

#02 is a collage intended to capture the dynamics of urban transportation under extreme weather condition, which is pretty common in winter in Chicago.

FIRE ESCAPE

#01 Stairs On Wall

One of specific feature of fire escape is that they are externally added to existing construction. With the urban sprawl and increase in the amount of construction in the mid-20th century, particularly the increase in public housing in major cities in the United States and Europe in the 1950s and 1960s, certain problems with fire escapes became clear. In the poorer areas of cities like Chicago and New York, fire escapes were commonly used for everything but their intended purpose. In the hot summer months, residents of mid-rise apartment buildings would sleep outside on the platforms of their fire escapes.

RECORDING THE WEATHER OF THE CITY

However, this becomes a common style in United States especially in New York and CHICAGO. As they become the outer structure of the buildings, the architectural style of the city is influenced, as well as the form of the urban landscape. The appropriate use of external stairs can be a potential adventage in designing the void of the city and the architecture.

#03 City Under Water

Several movies produced in Chicago record and celebrate the extreme weather condition of the city. The idea of #04 is about the survival of the city under extreme icy condition. Snow and ice can create elegant scenery and moments. The ambition of designing a “water city’ is formed.

CHICAGO WATER

#001A Approaching “Ice Land”

CLIMATIC DESIGN This project is generated by series of collages of movies stills and real images of Chicago. Given the existing weather condition are fluctuating and extreme, how to design an architecture with the use of the climatic nature to convert the experience from suffering to enjoyment?

School: Bartlett, UCL

School: Bartlett, UCL

Throughout history, water has been an issue to be dealt with in Chicago since 19th century. The city, especially the Loop is connected by the Chicago River, which has been developed for more than 100 years. For years, flooding and water pollution have been citizens’ concerns. Yet, no permanent solution has been made. There were different kinds of so much have been done with respect to the water problem including sewage and flooding, e.g., the raising of the city, the sanitary and ship canal system, the cribs and tunnels systems, and especially, the reversal of Chicago River.yet, things have not been settled. Today, Chicago faces new challenges. As the Chicago River acts an overflow for the city's sewer syste, raw sewage overflows into Lake Michigan every time there is a severe storm. In the first part of the project, water treatments with respect to flooding has been studied and analysed. Among all the treatments made, they share a common characteristic – succeeded for a certain period of time but failed in long term. The project aims to seek for a device or system that can run permanently to control fluctuating water phenomenon. Eventually, the device is developed to combine the previous systems in order to compensate the weakness of each treatment. The goal is to reinvent from the history of water in Chicago to get a solution in the present and the future. There is no specific site chosen. The idea is to make a flexible device that can be placed in any parts along the river. The outcome of the first project leads to an imaginative approach to design a building making use of different forms of water. The fact that water is uncontrollable brings unexpected danger in any architecture. The second project is trying to challenge the notion of ‘water can be dangerous for architecture’ and overcome the potential adverse effect of water on architecture. With the site chosen in the Lakefront next to the Chicago Harbour Lock, the proposal is to develop a seasonal building that would change its form with respect to the change of climate in Chicago. It requires water going in and out of the building from Chicago River that would define interaction between water and architecture. Given the extreme weather in Chicago, the project questions the competition and balance between nature and architecture.

The annual prevailing wind direction mainly comes from the lake, which ranges from south east and south.

SEASONAL PAVILION What is the origin of Chicago? One may think of the Great Chicago Fire, or the skyscraper. In the municipal flag of Chicago, there are four red, six-pointed stars arranged in a horizontal row, which symbolize historical events and represents important virtues or concepts. However, what cannot be ignored are the two blue horizontal stripes on the field of white, which represents Lake Michigan, Chicago River and the Great Canal.

In the last project, the mentioned water system has been analyzed and interpreted. They were once successful but no longer able to tackle the current problem happening in Chicago.

“They were the solution belong to the last century.” #001B Approaching “Ice Land” (night view)

MOVIE NIGHTS A night view of the site take from the Navy Pier. The project carries the ambition of sustaining the production of movies in Chicago and to create a futuristic film institute.

The following proposal suggests a seasonal water pavilion situated near the Chicago Harbor Lock that act as a supporting role in solving the overflowing issue of water in the city. At the same time, it is proposed to provide a large area of spaces for leisure and entertainment. At the same time, given the movie production is declining in Chicago, it is proposed to design a wonderland that combines the both: a film academy in a water wonderland. The formation of icicles in extreme weather inspires a methodology of creating a water outer facade for the design. The proposal is then intended to create impact to the urban landscape or cityscape of the windy city Chicago.

In Fact, the most fundamental and original element that shapes Chicago as what it is now is Water. Throughout the history, so much have been done with respect to the water problem including sewage and flooding, e.g., the raising of the city, the sanitary and ship canal system, the cribs and tunnels systems, and especially, the reversal of Chicago River. Overview From the analysis of falling force of the icicles formed on trees, the end point of each water pipe structurally need extra support. The offsetting of floor area helps supporting the outer water facade. Water supply is embedded at the outer ring of steel structure. The offsetting of floor slab also facilitate the further design of the mountain form of the architecture, which is one of the goal to be achieved as mention in the collages before.

School: Bartlett, UCL

School: Bartlett, UCL

The structural strategy of support the pipes inspires the use of hanging equipments in the design. For example, stairs for circulation through the film academy, stage lights and projector and movie screens for the film laboratory share the same structural strategy in this design.

CHANGING ROOM The dome on the ice rink provides natural light for the changing room. Pipe are embedded in the curvy still structure, which can provide water supply for sink.

AN EXPERIMENT. AN APPROACH

Tutor : David Erdman

Project Type : Final Project Prolog - Residential

To understand architecture in Hong Kong, knowing the residential building is a must. Rather than studying all the news types built within the last two decades, the site is in Mei Foo instead, to go back to the origin, to analyse what has been constructed in late 70s in order to fulfil the increase demand of living. The expected outcome is a subjective way of how Mei Foo is built, like a tracing experiment. And the proposal begins, from an experiment.

A BUILDING. A CORNER. To create something new, and to foresee what are the potenials, are the next steps after all the studies and analysis. Specifically in phase 7 of Mei Foo, there is a chance for further development from the corners of the buildings. The trial-and-error process of doing of massing based on the original use of corner, the studies of massing (both internally and externally), and the view and green environment of the surrounding area. The corner is no longer of old use, but a new use of space.

School: Faculty of Architecture, HKU

School: Faculty of Architecture, HKU

FROM THE CORNER

PROCESS OF MASSING Series and series of simple-line diagram has been made during the stage of analysis, from the scale of overal to the zooming in of detail. The objective of the exercise, is to figure out how the massing of the podium, the tower and the unit are made. The expected outcome is to specify a certain methodology, so as to lead to a certain approach to architecture, especially on the traditional podium-and-tower residential buildings of Hong Kong.

The new use of space has to be capable of bringing the users a new sense of experience. With all the functions, views, size of space involved, materials and size of openings on the facade are also critical and specific considerations in the creation of the new corner. These also control how the buildings look like from the outside, which make the new corner be easily identical and recognizable. The new experience is not just from inside but also the outside.

NEW EXPERIENCE. NEW SPACE. The corner space is activated but more activities should be introduced, e.g. a personal library, on top of circulating and viewing scenery, in order to introduce a ‘third space’, other than living and servant space, to offer users new sense of movement, to create new moments. With the design of facade, space can be defined from the outside. The proposal all comes from experiments of approach. It is from architecture to architecture.

Materials of facade around the corner should remain transparent, so as not to block great views around the corner space . Full-height glass would be a suitable choice. As the transtition is directly linked to living space, transparency wouldn’t cause serious privacy problem. However, as it goes along and turns round the angle, the facade can no longer be that transparent as it reaches the bedroom and the other private space of the unit. Subtle and gradual change of pattern and transparency has to be made, in order to facilitate the advantage of the corner, without sacrificing privacy of the other.

IN & OUT (INETERNAL AND EXTERNAL MASSING) Selected Work 2011 - 2017

H,T

A MOMENT. AN EXPERIENCE

Through the experiment and the proposal, the most crucial point is about the approach to view a massing. Through viewing internally and externally, the fluidity of massing is shown clearly. Here, it is important to know how to control a massing and how to let the massing controls. From in and out, the massing formed has it own character, such as form and functions, which deals with the internal and the external, in a semi-autonomous way.

With the aid of making study models of different scale, besides understanding the forming of the podium, the process shift to the forming of the tower, from inside and outside, like a fluid, by the location of kitchen and bathroom at the corner, and the location of claddings and openings on the facade wall. The importance of corner, being the transition point of the internal usage and the external form start to be highlighted, which leads the way of the proposal.

Walled city is famous for its spatial experience, yet it was demolished for several reasons. Some of the defect of it is that the intensive building density didn’t provide sufficient amount of light. Another problem would be in the hygienic aspect. Yet, there is no doubt that Kowloon walled city created a strong community, by the architecture itself as well as the users within the city.

School: Faculty of Architecture, HKU

Project Type : Final Project - Residential

Brief : Altered (e)States, Part II

Being the largest housing estate in the world, Mei Foo Sun Chuen obtains the biggest numbers of blocks within an estate, which spreads around the whole Mei Foo district. By conducting analysis of different scales, the rules of locating towers are reviewed and the relationship across districts is obtained. By comparing the programs that happen with other district nearby, the possibility of introducing mix-use of residential and working studio is spotted. As developing through process of massing, units and façade, features of the demolished Kowloon Walled City is traced, which is famous for its high intensity, irregularity and varying living conditions. The issue of reviving this “heritage” is questioned.

The end result is that through phase to phase in the project, a combination of different massing scheme, units type and arrangement and façade system is used. The idea is to create a sense of changes, which is transition. It may include connection and separation in terms of space. Yet, the most important thing is that it includes change of experience and time, which is the focus of the project so that it would be site adaptable and specific to Mei Foo Users, in order to create new experience in each phase.

Comparison of phase 7 in exploded axonometric. (Proposed - left / Original - right). In the existing phase 7, residents flow is mainly found on the podium, yet can rarely be found on other location. The proposed massing makes it more diffusable in each location: the promenade, the studio, the mall and market.

H,T

H,T

As a matter of fact that there is so much relation between the 2 city, the project aims to revive some of the key elements on Mei Foo Sun Chuen phase 7 with reference to the wall city. Yet this is also an experiment to resolve what has been unsolved in the wall city. Most importantly, the main famous is to rebuild a community, with the help of spatial moment, with respect to the users in Mei Foo especially.

From the elevation of the 2 sites, we can see the shared similarity on top of the intensive stacking of units. The punch-hole openings and the texture of the exterior wall created by the location of balcony and the exterior cladding shows the typical characteristics of facade and usage of residential units in Hong Kong. Through times there are gradual developements on that. Yet, the core concept underlining is basically the same. In Kowloon walled city, street between buildings can be called corridor, as they are so narrow. One factor that led to this is the freedom of adding-on extra cladding on the facade. By doing this, it gives more `characteristic’ to the exterior of the units, so that people can identify their own unit from the outside. Nowadays, residential buildings are so similar as there are given forms to build. Yet, the size of balcony and the colour painted on the exterior wall of Mei Foo tower actually provide a way to distinguish different types of unit. Combining the grid system in plan, this helps to create as many kinds of units as possible, which is actually how the system of walled city works, but in more organized way.

MATERIALITY Three types of unit arranged in 2 different way. As the basic programme and massing form is set, onward development would be unit types and facade. Applying the concept of the interrelation of unit types and facade, the packing of units may test out different facade pattern. The prefabricated unit blocks can fit back to the existing grid. The material usage is considered to make different programme distinguishable.

Selected Work 2011 - 2017

Selected Work 2011 - 2017

Throughout the analysis of Mei Foo, other than the classic podium-tower style of Hong Kong, the mass and void arrangement is also studied. As the research process go on, the studies of previous residential project is made, gradual development from the past can be seen, which comes to a comparison between the famous wall city and Mei Foo. the space development is quite similar, of which light allowance is a critical elements for both. By comparing the aerial view of the 2 site, similarity holds, except the regularity varies, which also explains the previous analysis of Mei Foo

Inner living units are more traditional, which share a large inner courtyard space. Small bridge is built for the circulation from famiies to families or club house, shopping mall and playgrounds. Atmosphere overhere would be more lively, which is like tracing back to some of the old and traditional style. The facade pattern is also more randomly packed.

The building facing right to the north of Mei Foo are all residential units. Facade is basically generated by the combination of 3 types of units. Separation between towers are space for lift and fire escape. The total number of 5 towers is originated by the axis and grids system of original Mei Foo Sun Chuen, so that the building would be more site adaptable on plan. School: Faculty of Architecture, HKU

The internal courtyard is intended to be a share space not just for circulation. There is playground and sky view balcony for residents to enjoy. At the bottom part, on top of giving sky light to the exhibition space, the view is open for residents living on lower floors, so that there would be visual as well as acoustic interaction between the living and the social.

Sky view from promenade. There is big contrast in terms of the material choice used in the 2 buildings, in order to emphasize the different usage of the programme. The smooth facade with punch-hole openings indicates the service apartment. The reason for making a smooth facade is to state that the types of living units here is different from the ones next to this. Glass facade is used for the studio building, as act as a large `showcase’ of arts piece or exhibition programme. This phase would be a visual connector to the highway and serves as an attraction point to the public.

CROCHET A BRIDGE

There are many ways in knitting a scarf, a floor mat or any functional as well as decorative things we needed in daily life. The major objective in this project is to apply one of the knitting skills i.e. crochet, in constructing a bridge or tunnel without separating the structure. In other words, both the plate for circulatiion and the roof and ground structure have to be connected within one method of crochet. The form and level of opacity are also determined by the methodology. style and the system of crocheting.

Brief : I am Fashion Hub

In 2003 the then PM Thaksin launched an astounding Bangkok Fashion City campaign that cost Thailand 1.6 billion project. Targeted to complete 9 sub-projects, the project was shelved in 2006 and little of its legacy was sustained in the Thai fashion industry. The campaign was pitched again in 2014 at a much lower budget, promoting Bangkok as the Asia Fashion Hub.

RESPOND TO SITE The Fashion Hub is located at the heart of Bangkok, right beside a BTS station. Taking advantage of the elevated railway and flyovers, the interaction of the building and the city is multileveled, inviting views into the different happenings within. At ground level, glimpse of the workshop and studio could be caught, igniting people’s interest of the ‘behind-thescene’ activities. The landscape rooftop is matched with the station’s height and it slits open to disclose fashion events within. The form of the building is a reflection from the traditional Thai architecture.

The intention of becoming the node for fashion industry in Asia does not solely depends on its capacity to hold fashion events, while runway shows only take place twice a year. Moreover, these events can only secure a fixed niche of audience. Therefore, it is of paramount importance that the fashion hub can reach out extensively to the Thai population, from aspiring designers, to eager consumers. The connection is a transparent and continuous loop of education to promotion.
