Welcome
Dear Friends,
We find ourselves in extraordinary times. At Hyde Park, we are committed to remaining true to our mission and 30-plus year tradition. We realize that we can’t change the world, but we are taking steps at the business level to implement responsible practices, including increased environmental awareness, ethical sourcing and community involvement. We understand the increasing importance of going green, which is why we are constantly seeking out environmentally responsible sources and processes. All of our in-house manufacturing processes at Hyde Park use 100 percent recycled metals, including platinum, gold and silver. We also make a conscious effort to print on recycled paper and use FSC-certified printing processes whenever possible. These are just a couple of practices that we’ve implemented, but we are committed to the ongoing search for more eco-friendly solutions as they pertain to our industry. While we continue to monitor our carbon footprint, we are also committed to ethical sourcing. All diamonds offered for sale at Hyde Park have been purchased from legitimate sources not involved in funding conflict and in agreement with United Nations resolutions. In addition to being conflict-free, we guarantee that all of the diamonds we carry are natural and have not been treated in any way. In these times, we recognize the increased importance of giving back to the communities that we serve. Please take a moment to read about our collaboration with a couple of local Phoenix and Denver charities during our 2008 events. While we only had the space to feature a few of these events in this issue, we proudly support the endeavors of dozens of other charities in each of our markets. From all of us at Hyde Park, we hope you enjoy this issue of Accent magazine. And as always, we look forward to seeing you soon.
Warm Regards,

EVENTS Hyde Park Phoenix Grand Unveiling OCTOBER 16-18, 2008
In celebration of the Phoenix store’s highly anticipated expansion, Hyde Park hosted a Grand Unveiling Celebration in October. The weekendlong celebration consisted of a private party on Thursday night, followed by a designer trunk show on Friday and Saturday. Hyde Park teamed up with Fresh Start Women’s Foundation during Thursday evening’s festivities to raffle off a $10,000 shopping spree for one lucky guest, with all proceeds of the raffle sales benefiting the charity. The highlight of the weekend’s designer trunk show was a personal appearance by designing duo Emily & Ashley. Perhaps most exciting for all involved was the 10 Fabulous Items Giveaway, where ten lucky winners were randomly selected to receive one of 10 jewelry or watch items valued up to $6,250 each. Located in Biltmore Fashion Park, the newly expanded store now encompasses approximately 5,000 square-feet (nearly triple the size of the original location!) and boasts some of the finest names in timepieces and designer jewelry, including Audemars Piguet, Chanel, Rolex, Cartier, Breitling, Chopard, Roberto Coin, John Hardy, Stephen Webster, and many more.

Men’s Night Out DECEMBER 9, 2008
Hyde Park encouraged guests to shop for a cause while hosting the Men’s Night Out event last December. In partnership with Denver Health Foundation, the goal of the event was to raise awareness of men’s health initiatives, including education, prevention, and treatment programs. The guest list was filled with over 300 of Denver’s top businessmen, community leaders, and professional athletes. Denver Nuggets star and cancer survivor Nenê Hilario was the keynote speaker of the night, attributing his defeat of cancer to his commitment to regular health screenings. Guests who donated $50 to Denver Health Foundation received a $100 Hyde Park gift card, with 5 percent of the night’s proceeds also benefiting the cause.

Accent Advisor Can you give me a few ideas for versatile pieces that will carry me through the spring season? Layers of chains à la Givenchy were all the rage last fall and are making a repeat appearance for spring. Links of varying widths and lengths are a must. Don’t be afraid to get creative: the right array of chains can be worn not only as a necklace, but draped over your hips as an edgy belt or wound around your wrist as a unique bracelet. Cocktail rings can also be worn in an unexpected way: string one onto a simple necklace or rope of pearls and it becomes a unique pendant. Most importantly, buy pieces you can’t live without. If it’s something that will truly brighten your life, it’s worth the splurge!
Over the past few seasons, I’ve noticed more and more people wearing stacked bangles. I’d love to incorporate them into my wardrobe. How can I make the layered look my own? Lucky for you, this trend has evolved since it first appeared on Hollywood starlets and New York’s social set. You’re no longer limited to stacking colorful ceramic bracelets and wiry hoops up your arm; the fad has matured into something far more avant-garde. That said, the answer to your question is go crazy! Arm yourself with all sorts of marvelous
20
baubles. Pile on unexpected arrangements of colossal cuffs and dainty bijoux, or for a more formal combination, stack diamond bangles atop exotic bracelets of all shapes and sizes. Play with alternating widths and materials for a rich, textural feel and keep an eye on your favorite innovative designers to find arm candy that lends itself to layering.

With so many spectacular styles out this season, it’s hard to choose just a few! But there is certainly a selection of smart investments that will work with all the outfits in your spring wardrobe. Classic pieces with a twist are sure to complement the sweet and sculptural feminine looks that dominated the spring ’09 runways. Bibs of pearls, lavish brooches and colorful geometric necklaces are just a few charming accessories that will bring that special something to your spring ensembles.

Accent Advisor My diamonds are my best friends, but I’m not always sure how to dress them down for everyday. Can I wear my diamonds and still keep it casual-chic? Diamonds are apropos accomplices for far more than little black dresses and evening gowns. They are trendy with tattered jeans and a white tee during your daily Starbucks run, stunning with a smart suit at your business meeting and flawless with a flirty sundress on a lunch date. Bring your daily brilliance up to date by wearing bracelets and watches that contrast the delicate gem with heavy, masculine metals. Slide on a diva diamond ring as the sole statement piece with a
day dress, and if you’re feeling daring, layer long diamond-accented necklaces or pendants with tangles of designer chains for a provocative Park Ave.-gone-punk look. Charm bracelets are a playful way to embrace the everyday diamond. Mix twinkling treasures with metal, pearl, or other creatively crafted charms and you’ll have a bracelet that’s fun and informal. Whether you’re dressing for day or night, Accent Advisor holds strong on this advice: when in doubt, diamonds.
Absolutely! Garden gems are a must if you want your spring look to blossom. Designers have strung diamonds into the freshest daisy chains, plucked the perfect pearls for fragrant earrings and arranged the reddest rubies into rose petal rings. Wear these delightful
pieces with your favorite party dress, a simple fluttering skirt or a flowing feminine blouse to create a look that exudes a subtle sweetness. But beware of overgrowth! Piling on an enormous bouquet of these spring accessories will only trample their playful elegance.

MEASURED AFFLUENCE Maybe it’s the economy. Maybe it’s Mad Men. This spring, fashion is dominated by words like “subdued,” “classic” and “formfitting.” “Smart-but-stylish” replaces last year’s “flighty-and-diaphanous.” Balance sober fashions with bold jewelry statements and your spring will be anything but boring. Rocked by Givenchy on the runways and Madonna at the Grammy after-parties, layered necklaces go to extreme lengths. As exemplified by Ugly Betty beauty Becki Newton at the opening of Mohegan Sun’s lush new Casino of the Wind, opulent jewelry plus simple togs equals chic yet adventurous.

Asymmetry was another tony look on the spring runways, and musician/ actress Queen Latifah (seen at the American Music Awards) proves even women with “dangerous curves” can pull the look off with aplomb. While there were some…unusual gowns at the 2009 Academy Awards (SJP’s “wedding gown” and Miley Cyrus’s “wedding cake”), elegance ruled. HISTORY
100 Years
Cartier of
For those who want a keepsake of the celebration, limited edition watches will be released to commemorate the anniversary. They include, appropriately, the Tank Americaine with diamonds and Centennial logo (pictured above) and the blue-faced Roadster with Centennial logo.
n 1909, Pierre Cartier brought his Parisian boutique to New York, setting up a small shop on the second floor of a private mansion at 712 Fifth Avenue. After only a year, he had already developed strong relationships with the wealthiest families in the country, including the Goulds, Rockefellers and Vanderbilts, and had sold the legendary 45.5 carat Hope Diamond to Mrs. Evalyn McLean. By 1917, Mr. Cartier’s business had grown far too large for the second floor; he acquired the private mansion from its owner Robert Plant W. Gibson in exchange for $100 and a $1,000,000 pearl necklace. The Fifth Avenue Mansion has since become an icon, declared a New York City landmark in 1970. In the 100 years that followed Cartier’s expansion to the U.S., the company has made its mark on American culture. In 1944, Alfred Hitchcock cast a Cartier bracelet in a leading role in Lifeboat, when Tallulah Bankhead tossed it into the ocean as fish bait. In 1969, Cartier caused a media frenzy when it exhibited the 69.42 carat engagement diamond that Richard Burton had given Elizabeth Taylor. In the ’60s, notorious writer and society man Truman Capote famously gave out Tank watches as gifts— he loved the design so much he couldn’t stop buying them! Marilyn Monroe sang of Cartier in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and Cartier provided the amazing Art Deco jewelry for The Great Gatsby, recreating the splashy displays of wealth of the 1920s. And in 2009, Michelle Obama was photographed for her official First Lady portrait wearing a Cartier Tank Francaise timepiece. To celebrate this rich history, Cartier has curated an exhibit entitled “100 Years of Passion and Free Spirit in America,” a display of 100 magnificent Cartier creations that have become a part of American history. Items include Vivien Leigh’s gold and ruby cabochon powder box (1948), a charm bracelet depicting Snow White’s seven dwarves commissioned as a tribute to Walt Disney (1936), and Princess Grace’s Caniche clip-brooch in platinum and diamonds (1958) on loan from the Palace of Monaco. n 1970, Davide Blei fell in love with a jeweler from Padua, Italy. He followed her as she traveled to antique jewelry fairs around the world, and became entranced by watch-making techniques and mechanisms. Since then, Blei has amassed an astounding collection of the world’s finest timepieces—and married the woman who introduced him to his passion. His magnificent assortment comprises 114 rare vintage models including (from left to right) the pink gold “Stelline” Rolex Oyster Perpetual Chronometer, stainless steel “Paul Newman” Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, pink gold Rolex Oyster Chronograph Antimagnetic and the Rolex GMT-Master Chronometer Series 1A. The collection also has the distinction of containing more rare colored dials than any other Rolex collection in the world. Blei’s timepieces were auctioned by Patrizzi & Co. on March 22nd at the Grand Hotel et de Milan, with the top seller bringing in $268,637. The new owners of these stunning timepieces must certainly share Blei’s sentiments about the brand: “I chose to collect Rolex for the beauty of their watches. Rolex is less known for their internal mechanisms as for their extremely beautiful cases and dials, but the combination of these two elements is pure excellence.” ♦

Rose in
Bloom
Pretty in Pink: Above: Roberto Coin Love Chain necklace and bracelet. Left: Mattioli “Chips” Bombe cuff.
H I S S E A S O N , everything’s coming up roses—rose gold, that is. When it comes to fine jewelry, you’re most likely “a yellow” or “a white.” You typically choose yellow gold or one of the noble white metals such as white gold, platinum or sterling silver. However, updating with pieces in pink is a must this year. The fact is, it’s a fashion faux pas not to add pink gold to your jewelry wardrobe. Because it is refreshingly sophisticated and one of the newest looks, many of the biggest names in fine jewelry have added rose gold to their latest lines. How did this happen? After all, not since its wild popularity in the first half of the 20th century has there been such a renaissance in blush-toned gold jewelry. One reason behind its resurgence is cyclical—the “everything-old-is-new-again” thing. But jewelry insiders suggest there is more to it than that. Experts contend that the current fascination with jewelry in the once-retro metal may actually have begun with the rise of interest in rose gold among numerous watch brands. It’s an attraction that started a few years ago, and it just kept getting stronger, especially once celebrities started sporting the timepieces. Comedian and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, for example, often says proudly, “My watch is a Rolex ‘Daytona’ in rose gold.” Affirming the trend is Duvall O’Steen, Director of Jewelry Public Relations and Promotion for the World Gold Council, who says, “The popularity of rose gold in luxury watches is a huge driver of the rose gold jewelry trend.” Notice that O’Steen and DeGeneres both speak of the metal as rose. But isn’t it pink? Or red, maybe? (Designers frequently say that men, when asking about watches, refer to it as red—perhaps thinking that pink and rose sound a bit feminine.) Simply put, rose gold is an alloy of yellow gold combined with copper to give it that pink effect, and it is the amount of copper used that ultimately determines just how pink or red the piece actually is. According to Chris Corti, a consultant to the World Gold Council, “The greater the copper content, the redder the metal. Rose or pink gold is formed in all karatages of gold, up to 22-karat. All colored karat golds are based on a combination gold/silver/copper alloy, possibly with small additions of other metals, such as zinc. So for example,

Pearly Whites: Akoya cultured pearl, diamond and 18K white gold necklace by Mikimoto. Pieces from the Pearls in Motion collection contain a mechanism that allows you to repostion pearls along the chain.
H E S E D AY S , conspicuous consumption is out and jewelry with meaning and symbolism is in. Pearls, in all of their alluring variations, are the jewel to watch as we re-assess the importance of luxury in our lives. Pearls have a long history and a precious place in popular culture. They often have sentimental value, as pearl jewelry is handed down through the generations, collecting memories along the way. Pearls are a part of almost all global cultures. They were valued by eastern and western nobility and written about in literature and poetry. Mythology abounds, imbuing pearls with a magical and mystical quality. Legend has it that Cleopatra bet Marc Antony that she could throw a more extravagant feast than he could. To trump him, she ate a precious pearl. India’s Mughal emperors ate crushed pearls for a different reason: to increase virility. This is just a small sampling of the lore surrounding this wonder of the sea. In the 20th century, pearls took on a completely different meaning, one steeped in style and the grandeur of couturiers such as Coco Chanel, who wore ropes and multiple strands, mixing them up with unusual stones and crosses. In the ’20s, real and faux pearls suggested a woman’s freedom from restrictive fashions as she danced the night away in a nonchalant mix of elongated and graduated strands. Hollywood starlets also contributed to the iconic status of pearls—from the cool glamour of Hitchcock’s blondes (Janet Leigh, Tippy Hedren and Grace

“As our society takes more and more interest in the environment and reducing our carbon footprint, we have become more focused on jewelry that is organic and ecofriendly,” says Krodel. “Pearls are one of the most natural forms of adornment and therefore have piqued designers, retailers and consumers’ interests, particularly since there are incredibly imaginative and intriguing variations to choose from.” Krodel also notes that in unstable economic times, women want pieces that are enduring, that bespeak a quiet luxury rather than
Kelly) to Audrey Hepburn’s unforgettable opening scene in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Through the ’50s and early ’60s, women everywhere wore bold strands with black dresses or classic styles with twin sets. Pearls also became a beloved bridal accent. They were the baubles you played with most in your grandmother’s jewelry box. They were familiar, the piece you knew you’d own one day. For the past decade, classic strands of pearls have remained in style, though the emphasis has been more on white metals with diamonds, and independent

designer jewelry with truly identifiable signature style. Now, these imaginative talents and innovative pearl manufacturers have combined elements from the pearl’s ancient history, sentiment and well-known looks to create a whole new interest for the modern woman. According to Helena Krodel, associate director for media at the Jewelry Information Center, there are a number of contributing factors to the renewed interest in pearls and the fresh designs they inspire.
the extravagant excess of years past. “But this does not mean boring or basic! They still want to differentiate themselves and make a statement about who they are without being showy.” Krodel credits our new First Lady, Michelle Obama, with wearing beautiful pearls and believes that she will have an effect on fashion like Jackie Kennedy before her. “Her fashion choices and personal style will influence a new generation of women who want to look youthful, professional and fashionable.” ♦
Trendy Tones
Something New
Size Matters
Brown is the latest and greatest color in pearls, from pale champagnes to more intense goldens and rich deep cognacs in Fresh Water varieties. Deeper brown Tahitian pearls with a rich luster are luxurious, yet work with organic and rustic-styled jewelry. Black and grey Tahitians continue to be popular in irregular shapes and large sizes, often appearing alongside white diamond accents, or set stylishly into high karat yellow or rose gold for contrast with a tonal play of natural fancy color diamonds. South Sea versions in pink/lavender and golden tints are perfect pales for the bride who wants a look that’s different, but still classic.
In bridal jewelry, if a woman is going for pearls, she wants uniqueness, jewelry that is going to be as important to her wedding look as the gown. She no longer wants pieces that look anything like what she saw at a recent wedding. This is her day to shine. Depending on the neckline of her gown, a bride might opt for drop earrings, a pendant or a complete strand of pearls with precious stone accents. And she will look for pieces she can wear for a long time to come and perhaps pass down to her children. In purchasing jewelry for a special occasion or to wear everyday, women are opting for styles that make a statement and are one-of-a-kind—just like individual pearls. These shape up as cocktail rings, long opera length strands with filigree stations or wide diamond and pearl cuffs.
Big, bold, Baroque pearls are sexy and modern and have also become very popular due to their limited availability. The fact that no two are the same gives women the opportunity to own pieces they won’t see “coming and going” and help them assert their own individual styles. The rarest pearls are typically the largest ones, since they take longer for nature to cultivate. The most stunning way to show them off is on a hip cocktail ring or incorporated with unexpected elements, like raw and rough-cut diamonds or textured metalwork.

keepsakes represent one of the most important days in a woman’s life.” Here, O’Connor highlights this season’s key bridal trends:
COLOR ME BEAUTIFUL Many designers are incorporating natural colored diamonds and colored gemstones into bridal jewelry. Yellow diamonds in all tonal variations have become widely accepted, and we are now seeing more browns, cognacs and champagnes. Some designers are pushing the envelope with black diamonds (a trend favored by pop star Fergie). Pinks, blues and greens are completely enchanting, whether featured as the center stone or side accents, or in smaller groupings on eternity bands. Sapphires are still the classic favorite for colored engagement ring stones, but we are seeing more variations of fancy colored sapphires.
A CUT ABOVE More designers are using unique diamonds to lend character and personality to engagement rings and wedding bands. Rose cut diamonds are a wonderful way to get a bigger look at a more reasonable price. They also create a less blingy, subtler feeling because of the delicate way rose cuts break down the light. Many designers are setting these delicate cuts in platinum. Cushion cuts are also popular, creating softness and giving a nod to romance of the past.

Nothing to
Declare I N H I G H S C H O O L , my classes were taught in six different classrooms scattered across 16 acres of perfectly manicured grounds. Thankfully, to keep me punctual, my father had given me his Rolex, a 1960s stainless steel Air King with a black face and an oyster band. By high school, I had been around the world several times over, although always heavily chaperoned by one or both of my parents. During my freshman year at age 13, my first opportunity to travel “on my own” presented itself: a 10-day guided tour of major Western European cities. We toured the great capital cities London, Paris and Amsterdam, but I was most excited about visiting Lucerne, the Rolex capital of the world.
One day after our arrival, I was able to slip away to admire the gleaming President models in platinum, yellow and white gold in the Bucherer windows. As soon as I entered, a very distinguished and polite gentleman complimented me on my “vintage” watch and proceeded to take me on a guided tour of the various current models, giving me the story behind each and the names of famous people who owned them. At every stop on our little tour, he very graciously offered to let me try on each model, but I politely declined. The President models seemed a bit intimidating to me, but when we got to the last case with the two-tone 18K gold and stainless steel models— just like the matching blue-faced ones my parents wore—I was transfixed. My new friend explained to me the 2mm difference between the Date and Datejust models, the difference between the Oyster and Jubilee bands, and the dizzying array of options for faces, bezels and combinations thereof. Then he showed me a stunning twotone Datejust with a Jubilee band and a champagne face, and I simply couldn’t resist trying it on...just to see how it felt. The problem was that I couldn’t bear to take it off. 30 seconds of calculating exchange rates, 30 minutes of agonizing indecision and 30 traveler’s cheques later, I was walking back to my hotel through the quaint streets of Lucerne with a brand new Rolex on my wrist. On the plane home, the flight attendant gave me a U.S. Customs declaration form. Never having seen one, I didn’t know how to complete it beyond filling in my name, address and passport number. At LAX, I cheerfully approached the Customs desk and handed over my halfcompleted form, explaining very politely that I had always traveled with my parents who handled these things. The nice officer told me not to worry and asked me if I had brought back anything I had purchased abroad. I earnestly replied, “Just the new Rolex I bought,” tapping the cuff of my shirt. He smiled, laughed out loud, and said, “Nothing to Declare” as he stamped my form and waved me on my way. ♦
