HPR Celebrates 10 Years of “Bringing Life to the Party!” The Home Pleasure Party Plan Association (HPPPA) was established in January 2005 to create a network between pleasure party company owners, distributors and manufacturers. Since that beginning, we added the Home Party Review or HPR, to provide a professional quality voice for our industry, our members and prospective members. HPPPA founder Tamara Payton Bell’s previous experience in magazine publishing proved invaluable. With connections in industry and years of knowledge in the party plan profession, she brought together a small but dedicated team of publishing professionals to bring her vision for HPR to life. Home Party Review, the official publication of the Home Pleasure Party Plan Association, was introduced to the world in April of 2007. While it was initially designed to provide access for our members to one another, it has evolved into a quality one-of-a-kind magazine that provides diverse content about business growth and development, product knowledge, industry news and home party plan related issues. But how did Home Party Review get its name? Bell had ideas, but she knew she wanted something catchy to reflect the association. Her first choice, Money Power, was shot down by members, so she opened it up to the membership with a naming contest. HPR has been instrumental in introducing the rest of the industry to the home party sector, and has establishing HPPPA as THE voice of the home pleasure party plan profession. The magazine provides a platform for association membership to showcase not only their own businesses, but also to hone their own skills and share that knowledge as contributing writers and guest experts. In addition, HPR has introduced product categories that had never been seen or sold by home parties. HPR will continue to reach readers across the industry – from pleasure party and adult store owners to internet buyers and suppliers – with a constant and continuous focus on providing members with what they need to grow their business. We hope HPR has been a useful resource to the industry, and we look forward to many more years of bringing a voice to the party.

Have a question about party plans? Ask the Pleasure Principals. The Pleasure Principals are a group of expert sex educators who are knowledgeable about the operations of home pleasure party plans.

1. How can I (or what can I do) let my existing customers know that in addition to offering pleasure parties I offer love/romance coaching? One of the simplest ways to let your customers know you offer love/romance coaching is to tell them during your pleasure parties. You can conduct short “commercials” during your presentation, notifying guests that you are available for coaching. There is no need to mention fees/pricing, it is imperative that you mention your qualifications. Utilize an email or text blast group if you have an existing one, to advertise your offering. You can also create low-cost postcards or fliers that can be shared with party guests and those on existing mailing list. 2. I haven’t changed my product pricing in a couple of years. How often should I change my product pricing? We recommend updating product prices every six months. Usually, new products are introduced into the market every six months; this is an opportune time to add new products to your line and update existing pricing. By updating your pricing every six months, you can ensure that you maintain your margins. 3. I’m new to the Pleasure Party business. I have set up an account with one distributor that is closer to me geographically. Can you tell me what the benefit is for me to set up accounts with multiple distributors? Even those that aren’t geographically close to me? The benefit in setting up accounts with multiple distributors (even those further away from you) is that you’ll increase your ability to offer a wider variety of products. Not every distributor is a full-line distributor, meaning that they may not carry entire lines of a manufacturer’s products, only a portion of manufacturer lines or a limited number of lines. Setting up accounts with a full line distributor and maybe other smaller distributors that may specialize in carrying full lines of particular products or “boutique”, will always work to your advantage. In addition, distributors have established minimums that must be met when making purchases. Each distributor’s minimum is different and if you choose to purchase smaller quantities, a distributor with a smaller minimum may work better for you at times. Overall, your goal is to be able to have access to what your customers want. By establishing accounts with multiple distributors, small and large, you’ll achieve that goal. 4. What’s the best way to find out best sellers and what’s trending? Your distributor representative/account executive is your best source for information about top sellers and product trends. Practically all distributors keep statistics on what’s is moving well and they have relationships with manufacturers so they’ll know what’s coming in the near future. Most distributors (larger ones) can provide you with a download or printout of top sellers. 5. I’m transitioning from a “cash-and-carry” party plan to an “order only” party plan, meaning, I’m no longer going to carry products that can be taken home on the day of the show. Do you have any suggestions for the most efficient way of doing this? The easiest way to transition is to just allow your current inventory to reduce through sales, until it’s all sold. As you sell out of items, just begin to take orders for product fulfillment. Eventually you will reach your goal. For those items that don’t seem to be moving as quickly as you’d like, you can offer them at discounted prices or bundle them with other products. Consider shipping methods and materials you will use as well as the cost of shipping orders. One word of advice, make sure you have your plan and policy for product fulfillment intact and air tight. You should establish your delivery windows and drop ship procedures before completely switching over.

The Party

Pump Up The Party is designed to provide you, the party plan owner, with ideas, tips, tricks, & inspiration to enhance your pleasure party presentation. This column will provide information about different aspects of conducting a pleasure party.

1. Encourage hostesses and customers to make the most of the beautiful summer weather by suggesting that they host parties outdoors, for instance a patio party or deck party, with themed drinks and food. Or perhaps a sexy sunset showing with fans gently blowing, refreshing cocktails or “mocktails” and sexy products would be a favorite. Providing suggestions for party themes to potential hostesses can encourage bookings during the summer season. 2. Always take a catalog to your parties. Of course, we can’t show all of the products we have available, this way your guests can discover other product offerings. Only allow guests to look at the catalog while you’re at the party, don’t allow anyone to take it home or offer it to take away. Usually, guests requesting catalogs have no intention of purchasing. Alternatively, you can allow guests to purchase a catalog, this at least shows a level of financial commitment and most likely he or she will purchase at a later date. 3. Keep small, popular “cash-and-carry” items on hand during your parties (maybe 5 or 6 of an item). Having small “cash-and-carry” products on hand can increase sales at each party. Items that you may consider as “cash-and-carry” could include one-ounce lubricants, bullet vibes, pleasure creams or balms, any item that is a best seller or popular item that is relatively inexpensive to purchase wholesale. 4. When having a party with repeat customers, allow her/him to give a testimonial about products you’ve sold to them. There is no stronger sales pitch than that of a real-life, positive customer testimonial! 5. If you’re working any adult-centered festivals or exhibits this summer, here’s an idea for an easy and inexpensive “give-away” item: purchase pillow packs or foil packs and staple your business card to the pack. Or, you can place the pillow/foil pack in a small plastic bag with your business card. This is an inexpensive way to make sure your name is out there. One word of advice, make sure you’re giving the gift to adults, not minors.
