A celebrated soldier, admired politician and founding father of the state of Tennessee, John Sevier led an adventurous life. He commanded a frontier militia into battle against British Loyalists. He waged a relentless war against the Cherokees in his effort to claim America’s first frontier. He later became Tennessee’s first governor. Following his death, Sevier’s accomplishments faded from public memory, but years later, writers resurrected his image through romanticized accounts of his exploits, relying heavily on folk tales and recollections from aging pioneers. Join authors Gordon T. Belt and Traci Nichols-Belt as they examine Sevier’s extraordinary life through the lens of history and memory, shedding new light on this remarkable Tennessee figure.

On October 8, 1862, forty thousand Union and Confederate soldiers clashed at Perryville, Kentucky, in the state’s largest Civil War battle. Of those who fought, none endured as much as the Tennessee and Georgia soldiers who composed Brigadier General George Maney’s brigade. The Confederate unit entered the fray to save other Southern regiments and, in doing so, experienced deadly resistance. Many of those involved called the brigade’s encounter the toughest of the Civil War. Despite relentless fighting, the Confederates were unable to break the Union line, and the Bluegrass State remained in Federal control. Join author Stuart W. Sanders as he chronicles Maney’s brigade in the Battle of Perryville.

In the months leading up to the 1971 Kentucky Derby, Cañonero II was an unknown horse with a Venezuelan trainer who spoke only Spanish. The Derby “experts” laughed when an exercise boy rode the horse out on the track with no saddle or stirrups. But the laughter promptly ended when Cañonero II charged to the front from twenty lengths back to win the Derby, followed by a victory at the Preakness Stakes in track record time. In recounting Cañonero II’s quest to become the first Triple Crown winner since Citation, awardwinning turf historian Milt Toby tells the compelling story of how one man’s wildly improbable dream became the dream of a nation and how a bargainbasement yearling born with a crooked front leg became the “people’s horse.”

Secret assistance in developing the atomic bomb created a radioactive neighborhood. Join Cleveland author Alan F. Dutka as he explores intriguing stories of famous and lesser-known Forest City disasters.

ohio 12

When its first covered bridge was constructed on the Ashtabula-Trumbull Turnpike in 1832, Ashtabula County was closer to frontier than a “new Connecticut.” Its rutted roads promised adventure and suggested prosperity but also great hardship. Covered bridges, made mostly of local timber, would eventually soften the brutality of travel, isolation and a well-watered landscape. Their proliferation and preservation gave Ashtabula County the nickname “Covered Bridge Capital of the Western Reserve.” Admire both famous and forgotten crossings with Carl E. Feather, who has spent over a quarter century mired in muddy creek beds, camera in hand, waiting for the perfect light.

michigan 13

The infamous images of Detroit’s crumbling buildings, abandoned homes and weedchoked parks are known worldwide. Seldom shown are the city’s thriving food ways, quietly rebuilding neighborhoods block by block with urban farms, locally made fare, new restaurants and an innovative, homegrown spirit that is attracting entrepreneurs and culinary enthusiasts from across the nation. Old neighborhoods are coming back to life with the smell of simmering soup, the crunch of new pickles and the aroma of all-day barbeque. Magnificent Art Deco clubs and speakeasies painstakingly restored to their former beauty are busy serving great local food. Author Bill Loomis goes behind the graffiti and ruins to explore how the passion for eating well is proving essential to Detroit’s comeback.

michigan 14

Capitol Park is the only city park in America where a state’s first governor is buried. It’s the birthplace of democracy in Michigan. Underground Railroad site. Streetcar and transit hub. Urban canyon. A block north of Detroit’s iconic Coney Island restaurants. A symbol of the city’s late twentieth-century decay, now a key part of its revitalization in a new millennium. Jack Dempsey, award-winning author of Michigan and the Civil War and president of the Michigan Historical Commission, uncovers tales of a uniquely inspirational public space that epitomizes the ups and downs of Detroit’s three centuries.

The spring of 1903 proved disastrous for the Murphy family. On April 22, the infant Ruth Murphy died in her crib. Within an hour, her mother, Gertrude, experienced a violent spasm before she, too, died. Ten days later, John Murphy followed his wife and child to the grave after suffering from a crippling convulsion. While neighbors whispered about a curse and physicians feared a contagious disease, Kalkaska County sheriff John W. Creighton and prosecuting attorney Ernest C. Smith searched for answers. As they probed deeper into the suspicious deaths, they uncovered a wicked web of intrigue. And at the center stood a widow in a black taffeta dress.

Wicked Ypsilanti James Thomas Mann 978.1.62619.335.2 * 6 x 9 * 128pp * 33 images * $19.99

People know Ypsilanti as a warm and friendly family city, but local historian James Thomas Mann reveals an unsavory history behind the pleasant new veneer. An offshoot of the Hell’s Angels motorcycle gang called God’s Children, also known as the “Huns of Detroit,” once ran armed and naked through the streets. A lady managed to cheat death from a bullet, thanks to her steel corset. And a crooked cop managed to collect paychecks under different names multiple times. Discover these and more fascinatingly sordid stories buried in this quiet community’s seemingly innocent past.

michigan 15

Residents of the idyllic villages scattered throughout the Upper Peninsula’s richly forested paradise live in quiet comfort for the most part, believing that murder rarely happens in their secluded sanctuary—but it does, and more often than they realize. This collection of twenty-four legendary murders spans 160 years of Upper Michigan’s history and dispels the notion that murder in the Upper Peninsula is an anomaly. From the bank robber who killed the warden and deputy warden of the Marquette Branch Prison to the unknown assailant who gunned down James Schoolcraft in Sault Ste. Marie, Sonny Longtine explores the tragic events that turned peaceful communities into fear-ridden crime scenes.

Wisconsin’s trees heard “Timber!” during World War II, as the forest products industry of the Badger State played a key role in the Allied aerial campaign. Sara Witter Connor follows a forgotten thread of the American war effort, celebrating the factory workers, lumberjacks, pilots and innovative thinkers of the U.S. Forest Products Laboratory who helped win a world war with paper, wood and glue.

indiana 18

From its humble beginnings as a place to swim and row a boat, Ideal Beach eventually became Indiana Beach, a small amusement park where families could have good old-fashioned fun. Founded by Earl Spackman in 1926, its popularity was bolstered by the addition of a dance hall that drew the top bands of the nation during the Depression and war years of the 1940s. When Earl passed away, his son Tom continued his legacy, setting Indiana Beach on a course that would make it one of the most popular vacation resorts and amusement parks in the entire Midwest, delighting nearly one million visitors every year.

The 1937 Chicago Steel Strike: Blood on the Prairie John F. Hogan 978.1.62619.343.7 * 6 x 9 * 160pp * 40 images * $19.99

On This Day in Chicago History John R. Schmidt 978.1.62619.253.9 * 5 x 7 * 384pp * 51 images * $14.99

Think you know Chicago? If you are thinking of Al Capone, the L, the Cubs, Barack Obama or the Great Fire of 1871, then you are remembering the highlights from the tour bus. Here’s the rest of the story, day by day. Chicago opened the first blood bank, invented the vacuum cleaner and sent a bowling ball around the world. One high school football game drew 120,000 people. Chicagoans fought nineteen years over the name of a street. For fifty years, they saved a gallows for an escaped killer. And those are just some of the stories.

illinois 19

A violent period of American labor history reached its bloody apex in 1937 when rattled Chicago police shot, clubbed and gassed a group of men, women and children attempting to picket Republic Steel’s South Chicago plant. Ten died and over one hundred were wounded in what became known as the Memorial Day Massacre. A newsreel camera captured about eight minutes of the confrontation, yet local and congressional investigations amazingly reached opposite conclusions about what happened and why. In the first book on the subject, John Hogan sifts through the conflicting reports of all those entangled in that fateful day, including union leaders, news reporters and an undercover National Guard observer revealed after seventy-six years.

wisconsin 20

978.1.62619.378.9 * 6 x 9 * 112pp * 35 images * $19.99

In the early 1960s, as members of Milwaukee’s growing African American population looked beyond their segregated community for better jobs and housing, they faced bitter opposition from the real estate industry and union leadership. In an era marked by the friction of racial tension, the south side of Milwaukee earned a reputation as a flashpoint for prejudice, but it also served as a staging ground for cooperative activism between members of Father Groppi’s parish, representatives from the NAACP Youth Council, students at Alverno College and a group of Latino families. Paul Geenen chronicles the challenges faced by this coalition in the fight for open housing and better working conditions for Milwaukee’s minority community.

Minnesota Twins Baseball: Hardball History on the Prairie Stew Thornley 978.1.62619.381.9 * 6 x 9 * 128pp * 58 images * $19.99

For more than half a century, Minnesotans have been treated to the memorable players and teams of the Minnesota Twins. From the Ruthian blasts of Harmon Killebrew and Kirby Puckett to a successful brand of “small ball,” the Twins have fielded competitive teams at Metropolitan Stadium, the Metrodome and Target Field. But prior to its arrival in 1961, the team also had a storied past in Washington that included Walter Johnson, the greatest pitcher of the Deadball Era, if not all time. Sports historian Stew Thornley highlights the lesser-known events in the club’s history. He also pays tribute to the rich heritage of baseball before the Twins, marked by minor-league teams such as the St. Paul Saints and Minneapolis Millers.

In the 1970s, a politically savvy and hardworking neighborhood organization, the Seward West Project Area Committee (PAC), outmaneuvered a public agency’s renewal plan to demolish approximately 70 percent of a historic neighborhood in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Demolition would have included all the houses on Milwaukee Avenue, a half-hidden, very narrow two-blocklong street flanked by small brick houses. Built in the 1880s, many of these houses were the very first homes in Minneapolis. Milwaukee Avenue offers a unique presentation of determined citizens saving their neighborhood in a decade that changed history.

The Red River Valley in Arkansas: Gateway to the Southwest Robin Cole-Jett 978.1.62619.173.0 * 6 x 9 * 144pp * 52 images * $19.99

The Red River’s dramatic bend in southwestern Arkansas is the most distinctive characteristic along its 1,300 miles of eastern flow through plains, prairies and swamplands. This stretch of river valley has defined the culture, commerce and history of the region since the prehistoric days of the Caddo inhabitants. Centuries later, as the plantation South gave way to westward expansion, people found refuge and adventure along the area’s trading paths, military roads, riverbanks, rail lines and highways. This rich heritage is why the Red River in Arkansas remains a true gateway to the Southwest. Author Robin Cole-Jett deftly navigates the history and legacy of one of the Natural State’s most precious treasures.

The Texas League Baseball Almanac David King & Tom Kayser 978.1.62619.065.8 * 6 x 9 * 224pp * 95 images * $16.99

Since forming in 1888, the Texas League has produced some of the most beloved American baseball players and seen more than its fair share of colorful events. In 1931, Houston pitcher Dizzy Dean pitched and won both ends of a double-header in Fort Worth, throwing a three-hit shutout in the second game. In 1906, center fielder Tris Speaker pitched for Cleburne to beat Temple 10–3. In 1998, Arkansas’ Tyrone Horne hit for the “homer cycle” in San Antonio, finishing to a standing ovation. Join authors David King and Tom Kayser for the record-breaking events, personal triumphs and memorable games that helped to shape baseball in the region.

Kris Rutherford, Foreword by Scott Hanzelka 978.1.60949.935.8 * 6 x 9 * 192pp * 64 images * $19.99

At the close of the nineteenth century, railroad expansion in Texas at once shrank the state and expanded opportunities, including that of Texas League Baseball. Sherman, Denison, Paris, Corsicana, Cleburne, Greenville and Temple teams produced some of the Texas League’s greatest players and provided unprecedented statewide interest. The 1902 Corsicana Oil Citys was one of the most successful teams of the time, claiming baseball’s most lopsided victory, 51–3 over Texarkana’s Casketmakers. In its only year in the league, Cleburne won the league championship and team owner Doak Roberts discovered the great Tris Speaker. Kris Rutherford pieces together the Texas League’s early days.

They packed their station wagon, left home and began a life of adventure together on Conoco’s West Texas survey crew during the 1950s oil boom. Five kids, twenty-one towns and thirteen years on the road—Bob D and Ann’s travels along the highways of West Texas are a portrait in a landscape of oilfields, railroads and ranches. Layering local history with family memoir, author Rebecca D. Henderson reveals a glimpse of mid-century West Texas through her grandparents’ adventures as a young couple raising children on the road.

Texas Adoption Activist Edna Gladney: A Life & Legacy of Love Sherrie S. McLeRoy 978.1.62619.351.2 * 6 x 9 * 160pp * 53 images * $19.99

Born in 1886, Edna Gladney was labeled as “illegitimate” from birth and, as an adult, lobbied for that label’s removal from all birth certificates. During World War I, when many women left the home to work, Edna opened an innovative daytime nursery to care for the children of these workingwomen. What became the Gladney Center for Adoption has changed the lives of families and children the world over. Author and Gladney parent Sherrie McLeRoy tells Edna’s amazing story alongside the making of the movie Blossoms in the Dust that launched Edna and adoption reform beyond Fort Worth’s borders to national recognition.

texas 26

From the humble beginnings of a frontier army camp, Fort Worth transformed into a city as cattle drives, railroads, oil and national defense drove its economy. During the tremendous growth, the landscape and cultural imprint of the city changed drastically, and much of Cowtown was lost to history. Witness the birth of western swing music and the death of a cloud dancer. See mansions of the well-heeled and saloons of the well-armed. Meet two gunfighters, one flamboyant preacher, one serial killer and one very short subway carrying passengers back in time to discover more of Fort Worth. Author Mike Nichols presents a colorful history tour from the North Side to the South Side’s Battle of Buttermilk Junction.

Painting the Town Orange: The Stories behind Houston’s Visionary Art Environments Pete Gershon 978.1.62619.439.7 * 6 x 9 * 208pp + 16pp color * 82 images * $21.99

Houston’s sprawl has come with controversy, but it has created a blank canvas for the public art community. It all started in the Telephone Road Place subdivision, where retired mail carrier Jefferson Davis McKissack built the Orange Show, an extraordinary and eccentric monument to self-reliance, hard work and, yes, the fruit itself. McKissack’s installation spawned more of its kind in the Bayou City, like the Beer Can House, the Flower Man’s House, Pigdom—one woman’s “shrine to swine”—and a flourishing art scene committed to preserving Houston’s art environments. Author Pete Gershon tells the stories of these sites, their creators and the members of Houston’s unique art community, all set against the backdrop of the city’s quirky history.

Ricky Stein 978.1.62619.245.4 * 6 x 9 * 128pp * 26 images * $19.99

The music scene in Austin is known the world over, but it can place a considerable portion of its roots in a little-known but prolific indie label: Sonobeat Records. A small, independent label founded by father-and-son duo Bill Josey Sr. and Bill Josey Jr., Sonobeat set the stage for the Capital City’s musical legacy. The label’s brief but powerful tenure produced an enormous amount of music and directly preceded the progressive country movement and the proliferation of a music scene that would earn Austin the nickname of “Live Music Capital of the World.” Musician and author Ricky Stein explores the roots of Austin’s contemporary music history through the story of one small but essential label.

The Red River Valley in Arkansas: Gateway to the Southwest Robin Cole-Jett 978.1.62619.173.0 * 6 x 9 * 144pp * 52 images * $19.99

texas 28

Haunted Granbury Brandy Herr 978.1.62619.310.9 * 6 x 9 * 128pp * 46 images * $19.99

Established after the Civil War, the small town of Granbury has had time to stock its streets and historic buildings with ghastly tales and haunting stories. Legend has it that the notorious John Wilkes Booth escaped to Granbury after assassinating President Lincoln and that his spirit now haunts the Opera House, living out his dastardly crime day after day. On Houston Street, passersby may encounter the little faceless girl who met her maker after falling from a window watching a traveling circus. In Granbury’s old jailhouse, past inmates haunt their cells and leave messages for unwitting intruders. Author Brandy Herr delves into the devilish history of Granbury’s most haunted locations and delivers a healthy dose of a frightening and mysterious past.

Kenneth & Helen Spencer of Kansas: Champions of Culture & Commerce in the Sunflower State Kenneth F. Crockett 978.1.62619.389.5 * 6 x 9 * 208pp * 31 images * $21.99

Born on opposite sides of the Kansas/Missouri border in 1902, Kenneth Aldred Spencer and his wife, Helen Foresman Spencer, were transformative figures in the Midwest during the twentieth century. Kenneth grew up in the small town of Pittsburg, Kansas, but by the 1950s, his innovation in the chemical and coal industries had earned him mention in Forbes magazine for his role as one of the nation’s great industrialists. But it is the couple’s remarkable philanthropic work that stands as their true legacy, preserved in places like the Kenneth Spencer Research Library and the Helen Foresman Spencer Museum of Art.

John E. Brown, Foreword by Joe Carter, Introduction by Gene Stephenson 978.1.62619.382.6 * 6 x 9 * 144pp * 30 images * $19.99

There were no bats or balls on the campus of Wichita State University in the spring of 1977. Five years later, the resurrected varsity baseball program was in the final game of the College World Series, fulfilling the seemingly impossible promise made by Gene Stephenson when he began recruiting players to a place that didn’t even have a practice field. Stephenson would lead the Shockers for over three decades, but those first five years with the team set him on the course that put him among the winningest coaches in college baseball history.
