Forgotten Drinks of Colonial New England: From Flips & Rattle-Skulls to Switchel & Spruce Beer Corin Hirsch

new england 4

978.1.62619.249.2 * 6 x 9 * 128pp + 16 pp color * 51 images * $19.99

Colonial New England was awash in ales, beers, wines, cider and spirits. Everyone from teenage farmworkers to our founding fathers imbibed heartily and often. Tipples at breakfast, lunch, teatime and dinner were the norm, and low-alcohol hard cider was sometimes even a part of children’s lives. This burgeoning cocktail culture reflected the New World’s abundance of raw materials: apples, sugar and molasses, wild berries and hops. This plentiful drinking sustained a slew of smoky taverns and inns—watering holes that became vital meeting places and the nexuses of unrest as the Revolution brewed. New England food and drinks writer Corin Hirsch explores the origins and taste of the favorite potations of early Americans and offers some modern-day recipes to revive them today.

The Irish have influenced the city of Portland since it was first established in the seventeenth century. Today’s vibrant Catholic community owes its origins to Irish immigrants in Portland’s earliest days, when beloved leaders like Father Ffrench provided solace to souls far from home. The church helped them adapt and adapted along with them, affecting the city in many ways. Portland’s Irish faced discrimination, especially in the years before the Civil War, when antiIrish sentiment surged and burnings and violence erupted. Despite this, many Portland Irish took up arms for the United States in the Civil War. Join Matthew Jude Barker as he explores the triumphs and challenges of the Irish of Portland before the twentieth century.

978.1.62619.292.8 * 6 x 9 * 160 pp * 79 images * $19.99

Winslow has grown up around Fort Halifax in its many, many incarnations. Reduced to one small blockhouse in the 1800s, Fort Halifax hosted archaeologists, travelers, artists, politicians and students. The Flood of 1987 swept away the blockhouse, leaving the fort and its supporters to fight an uphill battle for reconstruction. Throughout varied iterations, uses, trials and tribulations, Fort Halifax has remained the symbol of a community. Join historian Daniel J. Tortora in this engaging narrative of Fort Halifax’s fight for survival. Meet the famous visitors to the fort, the local residents who have cared for it and the figures who have kept its memory relevant and its future hopeful.

Collectively known as the Abenaki, these “men of the east” have largely disappeared from New Hampshire. Shadows remain, from the boiling of sap for maple syrup to the game of lacrosse and traditional corn-and-bean succotash. Historian Bruce Heald has mined, curated and saved the real story of this land’s first people. Learn the unwritten laws of hospitality, respect for the aged, honesty, independence and courtesy. Discover celebrations and innovations in the good times until European disease epidemics and hostilities forced their slow retreat, leaving an enduring legacy.

Luminaries of Early West Barnstable: The Stories of a Cape Cod Village James H. Ellis 978.1.62619.315.4 * 6 x 9 * 160 pp * 50 images * $19.99

Concord and the Civil War: From Walden Pond to the Gettysburg Front Rick Frese 978.1.62619.294.2 * 6 x 9 * 128 pp * 22 images * $19.99

While the shots of the Civil War were largely fired far from Walden Pond, Concord did more than its part in fighting for “cause and comrades.” As its boys marched into battle, the Concord Soldiers Aid Society sent clothing and sustenance to the battlefront. The community hosted leaders of the antislavery movement, including Emerson, Thoreau, the Alcotts and Frederick Douglass. Brave Concordians such as Louisa May Alcott joined the fray as nurses alongside more than 450 soldiers from Concord. Author Rick Frese explores Concord’s Civil War, at home, on the road, in battles and encampments and on through to victory.

West Barnstable is unique among historic colonial Cape Cod hamlets. A quartet born in the little village in the eighteenth century marked this village on the map forever. James Otis Jr., “the Patriot,” led the intellectual revolution and helped shape American independence. His sister, Mercy Otis Warren, broke free of the defined roles for women of her time to become a significant political activist, dramatist, poet and historian. War hero John “Mad Jack” Percival rose to the highest rank in the U.S. Navy and saved the USS Constitution from the scrap heap before sailing it around the world. America’s magistrate Lemuel Shaw influenced the country from his seat as chief justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Court. Join author James H. Ellis as he traces the stories of West Barnstable’s luminaries and their profound village legacy.

James DeWolf and the Rhode Island Slave Trade Cynthia Mestad Johnson

rhode 10island

978.1.62619.479.3 * 6 x 9 * 160 pp * 41 images * $21.99

Over thirty thousand slaves were brought to the shores of colonial America on ships owned and captained by James DeWolf. When the United States took action to abolish slavery, this Bristol native manipulated the legal system and became actively involved in Rhode Island politics in order to pursue his trading ventures. He served as a member of the House of Representatives in the state of Rhode Island and as a United States senator, all while continuing the slave trade years after passage of the Federal Slave Trade Act of 1808. DeWolf ’s political power and central role in sustaining the state’s economy allowed him to evade prosecution from local and federal authorities—even on counts of murder. Through archival records, author Cynthia Mestad Johnson uncovers the secrets of James DeWolf and tells an unsettling story of corruption and exploitation in the Ocean State from slave ships to politics.

Spies of Revolutionary Connecticut: From Benedict Arnold to Nathan Hale Mark Allen Baker 978.1.62619.407.6 * 6 x 9 * 160 pp * 50 images * $19.99

The Gilded Age on Connecticut’s Gold Coast: Transforming Greenwich, Stamford and Darien Maggie Gordon 978.1.62619.327.7 * 6 x 9 * 128 pp * 59 images * $19.99

When the railroad came through in 1848, it transformed Connecticut’s Gold Coast, luring wealthy upper-crust New Yorkers to retreat from the urban crush. The cosmopolitan gentility built their magnificent mansions and suburban paradises in Greenwich, Stamford and Darien. Ornate hotels along the water welcomed American royalty, and resorts beckoned business tycoons for luxurious country weekends. Much of the Gilded Age opulence remains today in areas like Belle Haven, Wallacks Point, Shippan and Long Neck Point. Author Maggie Gordon leads a roaring romp through this most pivotal time and the gilding of lower Fairfield County.

Covert intelligence played a critical role in the American Revolution. Connecticut produced an extraordinary number of spies on both sides of the conflict, from the infamous traitor and Norwich-born Benedict Arnold to Patriot Nathan Hale, executed by the British for espionage. Spying during the Revolution entailed coded messages, early submarines with the first exploding torpedoes and the penalty of death for those caught in the act. Despite the risk, some spies even played both sides as double agents. With stories of Silas Deane, Ethan Allen, Thomas Knowlton, the Culper Spy Ring and others, author Mark Allen Baker navigates the intrigues, dangers and double crosses of Connecticut’s most legendary Revolutionary spies.

Norwich in the Gilded Age: The Rose City’s Millionaires’ Triangle Patricia F. Staley

Wealthy manufacturers and merchants constructed magnificent mansions, many of which survive today, along this trendiest triangle in the glitzy Rose of New England. Tricia Staley has uncovered forgotten scandals like the Blackstone baby kidnapping and the bank cashiers who embezzled thousands of dollars from wealthy residents, as well as the drama of fortunes made and lost. Remarkable Women of Hartford Cynthia Wolfe Boynton 978.1.62619.320.8 * 6 x 9 * 144 pp * 72 images * $19.99

Connecticut’s capital has served as home to some of the most influential women in the state’s history, but few know the stories of their lives and accomplishments. Nineteenth-century abolitionist Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin became a catalyst for the Civil War. Ella Grasso was the first woman elected governor in the United States. Hannah Bunce Watson, publisher of the Hartford Courant, never skipped a single edition during the Revolutionary War. Through these and many more inspiring profiles, author and journalist Cynthia Wolfe Boynton chronicles the struggles and triumphs of some of Hartford’s most remarkable women.

The Jamestown Furniture Industry: History in Wood, 1816–1920 Clarence C. Carlson 978.1.62619.295.9 * 6 x 9 * 192 pp * 82 images * 19.99

Utica Beer: A History of Brewing in the Mohawk Valley Daniel Shumway 978.1.62619.338.3 * 6 x 9 * 256 pp + 16 pp color * 89 images * $24.99

Riding the wave of industries brought by the Erie Canal, Utica experienced a tremendous boom in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries—and it was all fueled by beer. Thirsty laborers lubricated their days with after-work ales and lagers made by crafters like the Oneida Brewing Company and Gulf Brewing Company. Prohibition nearly sounded the death knell for the trade, but the Matt family’s West End Brewing Company endured, becoming the first in the country to commence brewing in 1933. Thanks to their Saranac beer, the craft beer movement is old news for residents of the Handshake City, who have been enjoying these local favorites for more than 125 years. Join beer scholar Daniel Shumway as he explores the hoppy history of Utica beer.

While all but gone today, Jamestown’s furniture industry was once the secondlargest producer of furniture in the United States. Manufacturing boomed from 1816 to the 1920s, when Jamestown was still one of the top wood furniture producers in the country. In the nineteenth century, the thriving railroad industry allowed Jamestown’s quality creations to be distributed nationwide. After the Civil War, an influx of Swedish immigrants brought their craftsmanship and skills to Jamestown. Then, their pieces were valued for quality and durability; today, they’re coveted by collectors as beautiful antiques. Local expert Clarence Carlson uncovers the fascinating story of Jamestown furniture.

Revolutionary Chestertown: Loyalists & Rebels on Maryland’s Eastern Shore Theodore Corbett, Foreword by Karen Emerson 978.1.62619.399.4 * 6 x 9 * 160 pp * 40 images * $19.99

maryland 15

Calls for independence shook the wealthy gentry with their grand mansions in Chestertown and their patchwork of prosperous Kent County plantations and farms. It was in the interest of the upper echelons of Kent County society to remain loyal to the Crown. Yet the Revolutionary spirit did ignite, as Chestertown protested parliament’s duty on tea and sent flour to aid the poor in the closed port of Boston. While militia was raised, Kent County’s true value to Washington was as a key breadbasket for his Continental army. Still, the revolutionaries found it difficult to gain a firm foothold. Religious and social tensions created a charged atmosphere as Loyalists burned rebel mills to the ground only to be in turn attacked by rebel mobs. Author Theodore Corbett unravels the complexities of a community thrust into war.
