Enhancing property values and creating quality of life through recreation, community events and leadership
February 2015
Seniors in Highlands Ranch Highlands Ranch has an ever growing population of individuals over 55, and there are plenty of organizations which provide a vast amount of programs, activities, and events especially designed for the active senior. Whether you enjoy getting outside for a hike or stroll, or prefer sitting down to mingle over a game of cards, Highlands Ranch is a great place for seniors because you can find everything you’d ever want to do - right here in the Ranch. The Highlands Ranch Community Association (HRCA) offers everything from art, crocheting and pottery, to pickle ball, wellness and tennis. The Senior Club, located at the Recreation Center at Southridge, has a full slate of monthly programs including a senior luncheon every second Wednesday. This provides a wonderful opportunity for seniors to get together, connect, talk, and enjoy each other’s company. Senior games such as Canasta, Mahjong, Poker, RummiKub, and Bridge are offered Monday-Friday at the Southridge Senior Lounge. We also offer AARP driving classes which are a great way to improve your comfort on the road. Don’t forget that on winter days when the parking lots are icy and the sidewalks are wet, you can pull in front of any recreation center, and ask the front desk to have your car valeted. We want you to feel comfortable and safe when you come to our buildings! The Highlands Ranch Metro Districts also provides comprehensive senior resources, including housing information, caregiving, financial resources, referrals to senior-related services, and educational talks. They also coordinate the 50 & Better Together program to

provide Highlands Ranch adults age 50+ with information, resources, activities, events, and lifelong learning opportunities which allow them to grow older with the greatest success and satisfaction. HRCA partners with the Metro District on two annual events: the Senior Field Day in June and the Health Fair in November. Check out these senior resources and events, get involved, and make 2015 your best year yet!
2015 HRCA ELECTIONS BEGIN Get involved in our community and make a difference. The HRCA’s annual elections for Directors and District Delegates are approaching. Directors are elected by District Delegates in March at the Annual Meeting of Delegates, and Delegates are elected by their district constituents in April. There are five Director positions, two of which are up for election this year. Directors serve two-year terms. Deadline for Director Candidate forms was January 30, and the submitted applications will be posted on the HRCA web site by February 4. In April this year, Delegates will be elected for odd-numbered and vacant districts. See "Who is my Delegate?" article on page 3 or find out more by going to the web site at www.HRCAonline.org/Leadership.

This month we celebrate Valentine’s Day, when love is in the air. Celebrate with your sweetheart by attending one of the many community programs or trying a new recreational class at any of the four facilities. The Father & Daughter Sweetheart Ball is on February 6 or 7 and the Sweetheart Teddy Bear Tea on February 14 - these are two fun holiday favorites. THINGS TO DO - There are plenty of events to attend this month. The HRCA web site, www.HRCAonline.org, is one of your best resources for information about not only the HRCA, but Highlands Ranch. The HRCA continues to provide and maintain programs and facilities at a low cost to almost 100,000 people. We continue to strive to provide better customer service by soliciting your input through many different mediums, and I personally review all of the suggestion cards that come into all of our facilities. These efforts continue to make Highlands Ranch one of the most desirous places in the entire United States to live, work, and play!

WINTER SEASON - We’ve had some very cold temperatures of late which is always a good reminder to check your home’s water pipes. In January, several line breaks occurred in Highlands Ranch homes due to frozen plumbing. Another reminder of the season is the snow accumulation. Please remember to shovel your driveways and sidewalks, especially around mailboxes.

Hunt of a Lifetime is an organization which provides dream hunts for children who are battling serious illnesses. This year, the Backcountry hosted Kaleb, a 16-year-old from southern Indiana, for a five-day elk hunt. Kaleb has been battling Ewing Sarcoma for over two years, has undergone three surgeries, 100’s of rounds of radiation, and several rounds of chemotherapy; he is still in the midst of his battle. Kaleb is an avid deer hunter in Indiana, but his dream was to come to Colorado to hunt elk. It was our pleasure to make Kaleb’s
