For immediate Release 15 December 2015 Press Release Trang Provincial Court Scheduled Advance Witness Examination for Eleven Burmese Fishermen Human Trafficking Victims from 16-18 December 2015 On 21 October 2015, Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of the Department of Special Investigation (DSI), local police officials and civil society organizations (CSOs) jointly rescued 11 Burmese fishermen who had sought an assistance from a CSO that the eleven fishermen had been detained, physically assaulted, restrained and subjected to wage deduction. From an investigation and factfinding mission of relevant officials, on 7 November 2015, the authority from local, DSI and the Anti-Money Laundering Organization, arrested Mr. Sompol Jirotmontri, also known as Ko Nung, the owner of Boon Larp Fishery Limited Partnership and the Chairperson Trang Fishery Association, along with eight other accomplices. They were charged on human trafficking offenses and conducted a human trafficking offense jointly from three persons upward, under the Anti-Human Trafficking Act 2008. During an inquiry period, the Trang public prosecutors have petitioned the Trang Provincial Court to conduct a witness examination among Burmese victims before a trial. The public prosecutor reasoned that Burmese victims do not have a permanent address. The Court has considered the above petition and scheduled an advance witness examination to be on 16 - 18 December 2015 at Trang Province Court. Human Rights and Development Foundation (HRDF) a legal aid CSO, is a representative on behalf of the eleven Burmese human trafficking and labor abuse victims to demand their rights. HRDF will participate as a co-plaintiff with the public prosecutor in this case. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------For more information, please contact Mr Papop Siamharn, Labor related human trafficking project coordinator, Human Rights and Development Foundation, Tel. 094-548-5306 Email: mthaim420@gmail.com
