The Skilled Trades Go High Tech As technology has reshaped whole industries, creating new opportunities in some, replacing entire workforces in others, it has most definitely enhanced the careers of skilled tradespeople, placing a host of high-tech tools and techniques in their hands. Auto mechanics are as likely to reach for a computerized scanning device as a wrench, HVAC techs install complex automated systems, and heavy equipment operators control bulldozers via a heads-up display that would be the envy of any avid gamer. Even manufacturing plants have gone high-tech. “We work on some pretty sophisticated manufacturing processes,” confirms Charlie Kane, president of locallybased Busch LLC, an industry leader in vacuum technology equipment and pump assembly. “It’s very automated, with a lot of computer controls, and that work is done in a very clean, air-conditioned environment.” As technology continues to invade the trades, many of today’s tradespeople are arming themselves with basic math and computer skills. “As you add technology, the people who build and design and maintain and repair things are expected to have a higher level of education than they did in the past,” says David Ekker, dean of engineering, mathematics, and industrial technologies at Tidewater Community College’s Virginia Beach campus. It’s a trend that mirrors a growing emphasis on STEM-related areas of study (science, technology, engineering and math), one that is fueling a nationwide growth in promising, well-paying careers. In our
region, well over half of those jobs require less than a bachelor’s degree, according to a recent study by the Brookings Institution (“The Hidden STEM Economy”). A good chunk of those jobs are in manufacturing and construction, the study found, including installation, maintenance and repair jobs. For people who are interested in pursuing a tech-infused trade, there are several pathways to choose from, such as a short-term career studies program leading to certification, a longer-term associate’s degree, an apprenticeship, or companybased training. The rewards of following through can be great. “You would be amazed at what some of our students earn with an associate’s degree,” says Ekker. “They can start in the $50,000s. An electrician tech, for instance, can earn that much working for a power company with an associate’s degree. Right now if you’ve got technical skills, you can get a good-paying job.” If you’re looking for a place to start exploring a trades career, the Virginia Community College System’s online Wizard, at www.vawizard.org, lays out many of your options, including a series of career inventory questions to help narrow down occupations that may interest you, a regional overview of related jobs that are available and how much they pay, and what type of training is necessary to work in that field. You can also visit career counselors and academic advisers at local career schools and community colleges for expert advice in matching your interests and career goals to the right skilled trade. ✦

PAINTERS Skilled painters are at home atop bridges, encased in automobile spray booths, on construction sites, in industrial plants, at shipyards and marinas, and in small craft workshops to name just a few worksites that employ these critical tradespeople. Some painters learn their trade informally on the job, but specialty painters usually go through a registered three or four-year apprenticeship or a formal training program designed by their employer. Automotive repair painters can take courses at a technical training school, and the National Association of Corrosion Engineers offers several certifications for industrial painters that can be earned in as little as one week up to several weeks depending on the program. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects job openings to grow at a rate of 18% through 2020, adding an expected 72,100 new jobs. Part of that growth, notes the BLS, will
be fueled by the need to prevent corrosion and deterioration to aging industrial structures, along with the need to replace retiring workers. The median pay for painters is $34,280 per year, with transportation equipment painters bringing home a median $39,040 per year, says the BLS. ✦

HIRING
HVAC TECHS Whether they’re making a house call to replace an ailing air conditioner or performing critical repairs to a multi-million dollar piece of industrial equipment, HVAC techs are some of the most sought after workers in the trades. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects job gains of 34% through 2020, which they characterize as much higher than average for the occupations they track. “The last research I did nationwide, the HVAC industry was roughly 50% undermanned,” notes Dennis Brakeville, director of education and an HVAC expert at Tidewater Tech. The pay can be just as impressive. “Our very first HVAC graduate several years ago went to work at the Hilton Hotel and he started at $27 an hour – I wanted to take his job,” laughs Brakeville. Several local technical and career training schools and community colleges offer excellent HVAC diploma and associate degree programs.
SERVICE TECHNICIANS NEEDED
“If we get someone who has come through an HVAC program, they’ve got a clean background check and they have a decent driving record, then we’re very interested,” says George Vogt, HVAC manager for Michael & Son Services. “I’ve been here for two years and we’re never not hiring. It can certainly be a financially rewarding career and there’s a lot of job satisfaction in this field because you feel like you’re helping people.” ✦

“Food, clothing, building materials – almost everything is moved by truck at one point or another,” notes Bill Mayes, the terminal manager at OST Trucking. “There is a constant need for drivers on an ongoing basis and not enough in the marketplace to supply the need.” As home to one of the country’s busiest ports, Hampton Roads sends a large number of truckers on their way every day. Drivers routinely transport containers offloaded from ships to regional distribution centers or destinations further inland, then return for more cargo. Other drivers haul inbound loads of retail goods or groceries, while still more make local delivery runs. But as busy as our region is, we still account for only a small portion of the nearly 3.2 million trucks on the road today. There are, very simply, a lot of jobs for truckers out there, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects that number to jump by 13% for delivery truck drivers and 21% for tractor-trailer drivers by 2020. To enter the industry, drivers must pass a Department of Transportation physical and earn a commercial driver’s license (CDL). Several local career schools and community colleges offer specialized training programs that can be completed in as little as four weeks. The pay can be quite good. “The national average, according to the American Trucking Association, is $36,000-$42,000 for first year earnings, and students that come out of our program tend to push the mid-40s their first year,” says Sean Martin, director of operations for Truck Driver Training/4CDL.com,
the company contracted to teach driving at many of the community colleges in Virginia, including Thomas Nelson on the peninsula. Females do just as well as males, and Martin has trained students from age 18 on up. “I think my oldest student was 78,” he says, “and the last I heard he was still driving. There is no demographic in trucking – anyone can learn to drive a truck. It’s a fair playing field for anybody that has an interest in it.” Mayes says that truckers today can expect to drive well-appointed trucks that ride comfortably and are packed with job-easing technology. Some trucks are even equipped with an automatic transmission and cruise control. Regulated hours of service safeguard drivers from working to the point of sleepiness, satellite navigation is the norm, and overthe-road drivers bring all the comforts of home with them. “Microwaves, small refrigerators, sinks, televisions,” lists Totton Walton, vice president of safety and maintenance for CrossGlobe Group. “It’s a whole different world for a driver now.” But Mayes says one of the biggest draws to a trucking career is the independence factor: “No one is standing over you supervising or micro-managing,” he explains. “Drivers, in many ways, are their own boss and they like that.” ✦

AUTO MECHANICS If you think the auto technology available to the average driver is impressive – backup cameras, infotainment systems, keyless entry – you should see what the automotive mechanics are working with. “We’ve got so many computer tools and pieces of equipment to attach to a car and you used to plug those wires into the dashboard,” says Mark Maund, the auto program coordinator at Tidewater Tech. “Now you can pick up that information on a computer in the shop with your scanning device while the car is outside.” Yes, students can still expect to spend hands-on time repairing engines, brakes and other auto systems – they’ll just bring hightech tools and computer savvy to each job. If you enjoy working with
your mind as much as your hands, this is the field to go into, says Maund. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 17% growth rate in automotive mechanic and tech openings through 2020, with a current median hourly pay rate of $17.21. Experienced mechanics with formal automotive training and top-notch diagnostic and computer skills can command more than $59,590 a year. ✦

MANUFACTURING If you enjoy creating useful things or building something tangible, with a little problem solving thrown in on the side, welcome to the manufacturing trades. “This is a rewarding field in the sense that you can leave at the end of a day and you’ve accomplished something that you can actually see,” says Paul Zabicki, operations vice president at Craft Industrial, an industrial service center that does machining and rebuild work. “We’re a custom shop where do a lot of reverse engineering and design, so we hire machinists, industrial mechanics, we have welders/fitters – I’m talking about people who can take raw materials in their most basic form and make them into something,” Zabicki says. “These are true craftspeople.” And well compensated craftspeople, at that. “A conventional inside machinist here with five to ten years of experience can easily make $50,000 to $65,000 a year,” Zabicki says, “and that’s with a high school education.” And no college debt, he adds.
Community colleges and technical schools offer a variety of training programs in the manufacturing trades, and some companies offer in-house training. Craft Industrial trains new hires who possess a mechanical aptitude, an attention to detail, and basic math and English skills. “We bring them into the machine shop and they pick up lots of different experiences and skills on the job, so they’re being paid to learn,” says Zabicki. “As they progress, their salary goes up. It’s not tied to a certain amount of time on the job like a government pay scale. If you started at $10 an hour but you’re worth $20 an hour, you’ll get $20 an hour. You’re not on some graduated time-table. I don’t know too many places where that happens. “There is opportunity in the trades and there is reward. If you’re willing to put forth an effort, there’s stability, long-term growth and prosperity for the taking. I can’t say it any more simply than this – it’s the American Dream as it used to be, and it’s here for you.” ✦

SHIP BUILDING/ SHIP REPAIR For the sheer number of skilled trades jobs available, for the regional economic impact, for the diversity of occupations represented, in Hampton Roads, shipbuilding is king. With our high concentration of working ports and naval bases, the area is a natural host for shipbuilders and ship repair firms, from large organizations that employ tens of thousands of workers, to smaller businesses and subcontractors that may hire a few workers or several hundred. For skilled tradespeople who work in the marine sector, there are more well-paying jobs than qualified people to fill them. “The shipbuilding field is flourishing right now,” confirms Tony Davezan, a recruiting manager for Ameri-Force, a marine, industrial and professional staffing agency. “Things aren’t slowing down, they’re picking up.” An issue of concern that keeps shipyard recruiters busy is trying to find enough skilled tradespeople to fill their openings. “You hear about these young people who get out of college and there’s actually not enough jobs for them,” says Karen Baird, a recruiter for Oceaneering, a full-service ship repair company. “But if you go into the trades, especially here locally, you have all the shipyards looking for people. There are just so many avenues into this field. And we’re all pulling from the same pool of workers because there are only so many of them. We’ve even had to advertise outside the area as well to find workers. I would say going into the trades is one of the best things that you can do.”
There’s enough variety in the shipbuilding/ship repair trades to appeal to a wide range of interests, including pipefitters, structural welders, MIG welders, TIG welders, outside machinists, inside machinists, painters, electricians, carpenters, shipfitters, riggers and electronics techs to name a handful. And once they learn their craft, skilled tradespeople can expect opportunities to advance and training resources that are second to none. For instance, much of the management at area shipyards came from the skilled trades. Paul Rodriguez, president of NSC Technologies, a firm that places tradespeople in U.S. Navy shipyards from here to San Diego and Pearl Harbor, adds that the paychecks can be very good. “If you have a skilled trade, you can easily make $50,000 to $150,000 a year,” he reports. “I have almost a thousand people on my payroll and I’m signing these checks for steel fabricators who are clearing $3,000 and that’s on a weekly basis. Some of them work six months, then take six months off to spend time with their family.” So, for a rewarding career, one that promises longevity, opportunities for growth and excellent pay – all aboard. ✦
