Job hunters who are sorting through occupations with a strategic eye toward secure, well-compensated positions are discovering that the skilled trades offer just that, along with satisfying opportunities for professional growth. Often overlooked as a career choice, trades jobs around the country are going unfilled. It’s a basic problem of supply and demand – there simply aren’t enough skilled tradespeople to meet employer needs. For first-time job hunters straight out of high school and seasoned career switchers alike, learning a skilled trade is a great option. One group of career switchers who are finding the field a good fit is former or transitioning military personnel, a resource in which Hampton Roads is especially rich. “Veterans make excellent candidates because of their technical training, their work ethic and their general military background as a whole,” says Tony Davezan, recruiting manager for Ameri-Force. “This can be a very lucrative career – without a doubt you can make a lot of money in that regard and I don’t think a lot of them are as aware of that. I’m a 20-year Navy veteran myself and I when I retired I wasn’t fully aware of how big this industry is.” For some military rates, the pathway into a skilled trade is fairly straightforward. “There are a lot of jobs that transfer over into the civilian sector,” notes Davezan. “For instance a Navy hull technician - we have jobs for them as welders, shipfitters and pipefitters.” Military aviation mechanics also transition easily to the civilian sector. “We get quite a few people here in Hampton Roads who are transitioning out of the military,” confirms Rondell Davis, a corporate admissions trainer with Aviation Institute of Maintenance, whose Chesapeake campus location is popular with transitioners. “Some are already doing aircraft maintenance for the military and they want to do it as a civilian, but they have to have FAA certification and that’s where we come in. Very often, they’ll go right back to the same base and work on the same planes, only as a civilian contractor.” Students with military aviation experience can fast forward through many of the required courses at the school. “Transitioners can submit their smart transcripts to earn credit and test out of classes for things they’ve already done in the military,” Davis explains. “Over half of our instructors are former military, so they’re very familiar with that.” For other veterans who want to try something new when they transition to the civilian workplace or whose rate doesn’t have an easy civilian equivalent, there are still plenty of great options. “A lot of people in the military might pass up an opening in an industrial environment and say I’m not going

to apply because I don’t have industry experience,” says Charlie Kane, president of locally-based Busch LLC, an industry leader in vacuum technology equipment and pump assembly. “But most of the time with the jobs we have, I’m not going to have somebody walking in the door with the exact experience. “Instead what I’m looking for is somebody who has proven that they have the ability to learn technical subjects, they’re solid workers who show up on time, they’re motivated and a team player – maybe someone who has worked on board a ship and shown that aptitude for technical equipment. As an employer, we have a much greater degree of confidence that we can teach them what they need to know to do our jobs.” One of the best resources in the region for former or active duty military personnel who want to position themselves optimally for the civilian job market is Tidewater Community College’s Center for Military and Veterans Education. The 50+ member staff, the overwhelming majority of whom have a military background themselves, offer career counseling and a wide range of educational support services. The center’s executive director, Dr. Bruce Brunson, retired Navy, points out that choosing a technical field can offer a transitioning service member many advantages. “A lot of them are older, they have families and they’re used to living on a certain income. Well, in our area we can’t produce enough welders and diesel mechanics for example. Now, that’s not a match for everybody, but it certainly is for some people and they’ll make $25 to $35 an hour. So the income potential is very good.” The college has an extensive list of accredited programs that lead to certification, licensure or degrees in a large number of skilled trade areas. Active duty and veterans can learn more by stopping by the center. “Absolutely the best thing to do is to call and come in and see one of our advisers because you find out so much more when you’re sitting in front of somebody,” says Brunson. “And we actually have VA employees who take care of some of the more detailed paperwork. We’re like a one-stop shop.” Call 757-822-7777 or visit www.tcc.edu/ military and www.tcc.edu/navy for more information. ■

Profile: Construction /Manufacturing If you enjoy creating useful things or building something tangible, there’s a wide range of related jobs in the skilled trades that promise a rewarding career. One industry to consider is manufacturing, which today usually means a hightech plant, says Charlie Kane, president of locally-based Busch LLC, an industry leader in vacuum technology equipment and pump assembly. “For instance, we work on some pretty sophisticated manufacturing processes, very automated, with a lot of computer controls, and that work is done in a very clean, air-conditioned environment. “The other side of manufacturing is understanding how far these careers can take you. I’ve got people working in mechanic assembly, and in electrician and plumber roles, who are making much better money than people realize – better money than many people with four-year degrees.” You’ll find a large variety of jobs in the manufacturing trades. “CNC (computer numerically controlled) machine operator is one we’re always looking at, mechanical assembly people, electrical technicians, and we have warehouse positions,” lists Kane. Other manufacturing jobs include fabricators, machinists, quality controllers, maintenance techs, operations managers, controls engineers, machine operators and line supervisors. Right now, these jobs are in great demand. “There’s a kind of a gap in the workforce,” explains Kane. “Many of the people in the skilled trades are more than halfway through their careers and there are not enough new people going into the trades to replace them. That’s why we’re working with the community colleges and others to look at how we can create training programs to develop these skill sets and encourage people to go into them.” For those who are concerned about job security and the further eroding of our country’s manufacturing base, Kane points to a shift that has taken place in recent years. “People need to understand that manufacturing is still a great career opportunity, even though it may appear like it has declined in the U.S. The interesting thing is that the type of manufacturing that is left is increasingly more specialized and more sophisticated. You’re doing something with ultra-pure metal or ultra-pure chemicals, it’s ultra-fast or ultra-small, and the jobs are more skillsbased. “It’s a higher-end type of job today, and these are jobs that are actually growing. So while some manufacturing has declined, our industry, and our company in particular, continues to expand.” Construction is another good choice, with jobs that run the gamut from helpers to plumbers to site inspectors. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that most construction trades will see an increase in demand through 2020. Jobs for brickmasons, for example, should grow by 40% through 2020. Openings for plumbers, painters, electricians, drywall installers, carpenters, cement masons and construction equipment operators are expected to increase by 23-34% through that same period. Construction inspector jobs are projected to grow by 18%. The pay can be quite good. For instance, electricians earn a median hourly wage of $23.20. Top earners claim over $80,890 a year, with electricians who are skilled in voice, data and video wiring seeing the most demand. ■

In an area known for its superb deepwater harbor, well-trafficked shipping lanes and strong naval presence, it’s no surprise that shipbuilding and repair is a major economic driver in Hampton Roads. In fact, several of the largest regional employers are shipyards and there are also hundreds of subcontractors and industry-related businesses as well. For this industry, it’s clearly full speed ahead. “The shipbuilding field is flourishing right now,” confirms Tony Davezan, a recruiting manager for Ameri-Force, a marine, industrial and professional staffing agency. “Things aren’t slowing down, they’re picking up. We’re extremely busy right now.” One of the issues that is keeping Davezan and other recruiters so busy is trying to find enough skilled tradespeople to fill shipyard openings. “One of the big things that we struggle with day to day here in our industry is the lack of skilled tradespeople,” says Paul Rodriguez, president of NSC Technologies, a firm that places tradespeople in U.S. Navy shipyards from here to San Diego and Pearl Harbor. “Every day my clients are reaching out saying we have a need for 50 welders or we need 80 electricians or 12 painters. There are just enormous opportunities out there in our industry to learn a trade and grow with the company.” Part of the reason is an aging workforce. For instance, Newport News Shipbuilding announced last summer that they expect to hire 10,000 to 15,000 workers over the next five years to replace retiring workers. One promising area recruiters like to draw from

is military personnel who are transitioning from the service. “There are a lot of jobs that transfer over into the civilian sector,” notes Davezan. “For instance a Navy hull technician - we have jobs for them as welders, shipfitters and pipefitters.” An electrician’s mate serving in the Navy will find the marine electrician trade a good fit, he says. “And a machinist mate – MM (SRO) – equates to an outside machinist in the civilian sector, while a bosun’s mate can be a painter. “There are a lot of things they do in the Navy that they can do as a civilian. This can be a very lucrative career – without a doubt you can make a lot of money in that regard and I don’t think a lot of them are as aware of that. I’m a 20-year Navy veteran myself and I when I retired I wasn’t fully aware of how big this industry is.” Skilled shipyard tradespeople can expect training resources that are second to none. In fact, many of the shipyards and marine services companies hire apprentices and pay them to learn a trade. And Rodriguez adds that the paychecks can be very good. “If you have a skilled trade, you can easily make $50,000 to $150,000 a year,” he reports. “I have almost a thousand people on my payroll and I’m signing these checks for steel fabricators who are clearing $3,000 and that’s on a weekly basis. Some of them work six months, then take six months off to spend time with their family.” “And if you go to work on a ship, there are so many opportunities to grow,” says Cathey Botwright, president of Seaside Staffing, an agency that places skilled tradespeople in local shipyards. “Most of

Bush or some other vessel that is used to protect the country,” says Rodriguez. “You’re a part of something that is very significant to the United States. And how many people actually get the opportunity to step onto an aircraft carrier or a nuclear submarine?” Like all regional marine service employers, Rodriguez hires a diversity of people, including women. “In fact, one of our best welders is a woman who works for a client on a job that was initially supposed to be a two-month project. Profile: Pipefitters/Plumbers If there’s one job that is in absolutely no danger of being off-shored, it’s plumbing. When your pipes are leaking, backed up or otherwise threatening ruin to your home or business, tech support in a distant land offers very little consolation. Plumbers also play an essential role at industrial plants and construction sites, whether installing, maintaining or repairing an array of pipes. There may be many fields where job security is a concern today, but plumbing isn’t one of them. Not only is the industry pretty much indispensible, but it’s growing as well. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects a much faster than average growth rate of 26% through 2020, with the addition of 107,600 new positions. The BLS attributes part of the increased demand to new building construction and stricter water efficiency standards, but aging plumbing systems in residential, commercial and municipal environments are also contributing to the ongoing need for plumbers. Plumbers enter the field through apprenticeship programs or technical training schools, and most states require them to be licensed. Virginia offers licensure at three levels: journeyman, master or contractor. The hours can be long, especially if after-hours emergencies are part of the job description or a construction deadline is looming, but the pay is very good. The median annual wage for plumbers is $46,660, and the top 10% earn more than $79,920/yr. About 14% of plumbers own their own business. A related area is pipefitting. Pipefitters are primarily responsible for installing and maintaining pipes that carry industrial chemicals and gases in worksites like power plants. Specialty workers include gasfitters who work with pipes designed to conduct oxygen to hospital patients, sprinklerfitters who maintain fire sprinkler systems, and steamfitters who install high pressure steam pipes. Plumbers and pipefitters often work for HVAC companies, and in Hampton Roads, pipefitters are highly sought after by local shipyards. ■

Profile: Truck Drivers/ Transportation Whether putting drivers on the road or placing logistics staff behind a desk, the transportation industry is definitely creating jobs. The sector is already one of the largest in the country, but by 2020 the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the number of jobs to jump by 13% for delivery truck drivers, 21% for tractor-trailer drivers, and 26% for logisticians. The explanation for the increased need is a simple one. “Everything goes by truck,” points out Francis McComas, vice president of MCO Transport, a trucking, warehousing and logistics company that maintains a local presence. “Take a look around the room that you’re sitting is and name one thing in the room that was not transported by truck at one point or another, whether it’s the handle on the door or the glass on the picture frames.” To enter the industry, drivers must pass a Department of Transportation physical and earn a commercial driver’s license (CDL). Several local career schools and community colleges offer specialized training programs, including Thomas Nelson Community College’s program, which can be completed in as little as four weeks. The pay can be quite good. “The national average, according to the American Trucking Association, is $36,000-$42,000 for first year earnings, and students that come out of our program tend to push the mid-40s their first year,” says Sean Martin, Director of Operations for Truck Driver Training/4CDL.com, the company contracted to teach driving at many of the community colleges in Virginia, including Thomas Nelson on the peninsula. Females do just as well as males, and Martin has trained students from age 18 on up. “I think my oldest student was 78,” he says, “and the last I heard he was still driving. There is no demographic in trucking – anyone can learn to drive a truck. It’s a fair playing field for anybody that has an interest in it.” It may be a global economy, but it’s the transportation companies, the logisticians and, ultimately, the truck drivers who keep that supply line functioning. “It’s an opportunity to provide a service essential to your community and to help keep the economy going,” says McComas. ■

Profile: HVAC Technicians HVAC techs today are as likely to be called on to perform critical repairs to a multi-million dollar piece of industrial equipment as they are to coax an aging residential furnace into producing warmth on a brrrrr winter day. “It’s not the same job working with the same old equipment anymore,” points out John Kerner, CEO of the Kerner Group, a multi-company organization that supplies HVAC, electrical, indoor air quality and facility management services. “Instead the HVAC systems are more complex and greener today. “Along with homes and businesses that need air conditioning and heating for human comfort, almost every manufacturing process requires some kind of heating and cooling system to make an end product and they can’t afford to have a production line affected because that system has failed.” As the field goes increasingly high-tech, the need for certified HVAC mechanics has increased as well: the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects job growth gains of 34% through 2020, which they characterize as much higher than average for the occupations they track. “The last research I did nationwide, the HVAC industry was roughly 50% undermanned,” notes Dennis Brakeville, director of education and an HVAC expert at Tidewater Tech (www.tidewatertechtrades. edu). Brakeville points to an aging workforce compounded by increased regulatory mandates to explain the growing competition for HVAC techs. “Just as the average welder is reaching age 55, that holds true with the HVAC industry,” he explains.

HVAC techs can choose from three specialty areas, he says – “Residential; light commercial, which involves working with things like restaurant equipment, walkin coolers and freezers; and commercial, such as the big buildings downtown where they deal with the centrifugal chillers and direct digital controls. If you’re an HVAC technician, you’re a mechanical expert, you’re an electrical expert, you’re an air flow expert and you’re a chemist.” Most HVAC techs enter the field after going through a six-month to two-year program offered by career and technical schools or community colleges. “Our program is 45 weeks,” says Brakeville, “and by the end of those 45 weeks, they have already taken their EPA certification exam.” According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual pay of HVAC techs is $42,530, though that amount can increase significantly. “Our very first HVAC graduate several years ago went to work at the Hilton Hotel and he started at $27 an hour – I wanted to take his job,” laughs Brakeville. Kerner also notes the hefty paychecks that HVAC techs can earn: “I can tell you that our senior mechanics make more than a school teacher,” he says, “and they have company-provided vehicles that they can drive back and forth to work – it’s one less vehicle they have to buy, insure and maintain. “This is a growing career field that is evolving. The more you put into it, the more you’ll get out of it.” Job security, great pay and the opportunity to work with increasingly high-tech equipment – the HVAC field has a great deal to recommend it. ■

Profile: Maintenance Trades Anything a skilled tradesperson builds – a highway, a power plant, an apartment building – requires another skilled tradesperson to maintain. Make that a small army of skilled tradespeople. From public parks to office towers to schools, you’ll find grounds and janitorial maintenance crews mowing and cleaning. At factories, technicians lubricate and test huge mechanical systems. Along roadways, crews repair damaged asphalt and clear drainage ditches. Inside critical utilities, such as HRSD’s wastewater treatment plants, workers keep machinery operating smoothly and protect the environment at the same time. Clearly, the roster of maintenance trades professionals is a diverse one. “At HRSD, we hire everyone from plant operators and engineers all the way through instrumentation specialist, electricians, maintenance operators, heavy equipment operators, facility assistants and in my division we have interceptor technicians, pump station supervisors and conveyance system supervisors,” lists Chris Stephan, HRSD’s Chief of Interceptor Operations, North Shore. Unlike a lot of other employment sectors, wastewater treatment and management is not a field that can be outsourced. “It’s not only job security and excellent benefits, but you also have the added benefit of a purpose in your job,” says Stephan. “You can go into a lot of jobs, and they’re good jobs, very honorable, but here we’re actively working to protect the environment.” Other good options in this job category include residential and commercial property maintenance. Responding to a growing need,

the Building Trades Academy, created by the Tidewater Builders Association, developed a course of study that teaches both property management and maintenance. “We had a number of the apartment management companies come to us and ask us to tailor a program for them,” explains Jeff Ainslie, President of Ainslie Group, a local building company. “They need people who can go into someone’s home, communicate clearly, analyze what the maintenance issue is, determine how to take care of it and then make it happen very quickly.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the need for general maintenance and repair workers to increase by 11% through 2020 and notes that the annual median pay in 2010 was $34,730. Industrial machinery mechanics and maintenance workers should see an increased need of 19% through 2020 and their median pay in 2010 was $44,160/yr. Educational requirements vary by job from a high school diploma to a college degree and workers often find good opportunities for career advancement. ■

Reducing human impact on the environment for 70 years.

Our 700 environmentally focused employees come from many backgrounds, but we share one vision:

Future generations will inherit clean waterways and be able to keep them clean.
